Jungle Cruise Cast: Where You’ve Seen The Actors Before

After it was pushed back from its original October 2019 release date to July 2020 before being pushed back another whole year, the time has finally come that we get to see Dwayne Johnson visit " the backside of water ." In Jungle Cruise , based on the popular Disneyland attraction of the same name, The Rock plays a sea boat captain enlisted to help guide an eccentric scientist, played by Emily Blunt , on a quest to find the Tree of Life during World War I. While it is easy to tell that this is destined to be one of the biggest 2021 movies with such huge stars in the lead, there are many other big names in the Jungle Cruise cast to look forward to seeing.

Dwayne Johnson (Frank Wolff)

Playing a hero named Frank who runs a slightly sketchy river tour operation until he's hired by Emily Blunt ’s character for an entirely different purpose is The Rock. He first transitioned from wrestling to acting playing his father on That ‘70s Show before making his film debut in 2001’s The Mummy Returns as The Scorpion King.

He first became friendly with Disney with family films like The Game Plan before the Fast and Furious movies certified him as a franchise rejuvenator and box office draw. After the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star returns to the jungle again, he will re-team with Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra for Black Adam (one of the most anticipated DC movies ), return to California for a Big Trouble in Little China sequel, and revisit Hawaii for Robert Zemeckis’ Kamehameha biopic , The King.

Emily Blunt (Dr. Lily Houghton)

It is actually surprising that it took until now for Dwayne Johnson and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (who plays Lily Houghton, a woman on a quest to find a mythical tree in the Amazon that can cure any ailment) to join forces. For one, she is also a Disney darling, with Mary Poppins Returns and others, and has led action-packed blockbusters like the A Quiet Place movies (directed by and co-starring her husband John Krasinski ).

The British beauty first got America’s attention with 2006’s The Devil Wears Prad , which led to an impressively versatile career, ranging from sci-fi thrillers like Looper to dark indie dramedies like Sunshine Cleaning to light rom-coms like The Five-Year Engagement with Jason Segel . Blunt does not seem interested in granting many fans’ wish to see her play Invisible Woman in the Marvel movies , but could follow Jungle Cruise by reprising her Edge of Tomorrow role if the long-awaited sequel ever happens , that is.

Jack Whitehall (MacGregor Houghton)

Playing the role of MacGregor Houghton, the brother of Lily who accompanies her on the voyage is Jack Whitehall, who may finally make a splash with American audiences by starring in Jungle Cruise . This is not to say, however, that the British comedian does not already have a following in the States, having starred in 2016’s Mother’s Day , the hit Amazon Prime original miniseries Good Omens in 2019, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (his first collaboration with Disney) a year earlier. Later in 2021, Whitehall will appear in the live-action Clifford the Big Red Dog movie and is slated to star in two very unique upcoming romance movies called Silent Retreat and Robots .

Paul Giamatti (Nilo Nemolato)

As Nilo Nemolato, who manages the port where Frank keeps his boat, we have Paul Giamatti , who has been acting since the ‘90s, appearing in bit parts in movies like Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show and the Saving Private Ryan cast before he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for 2004’s Sideways , which made him a household name. He has since become an Oscar nominee for Cinderella Man , a Golden Globe and Emmy winner for HBO’s John Adams miniseries, a Marvel villain (Rhino) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , a shady record producer in the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton , and even Santa Claus in 2007’s Fred Claus with Vince Vaughn.

Jungle Cruise marks Paul Giamatti's second collaboration with Disney after Saving Mr. Banks and his second collaboration with Dwayne Johnson after San Andreas from 2015. He. is also a series regular on Showtime’s Billions and will reportedly reunite with Sideways director Alexander Payne for The Holdovers .

Jesse Plemons (Prince Joachim)

Prince Joachim, the one who steals the arrowhead from Emily Blunt and attacks Dwayne Johnson's boat from a submarine in the Jungle Cruise trailer, is played by Jesse Plemons . He has has proved that he can play a good bad guy as Todd on the Breaking Bad cast , in one of the best Black Mirror episodes (“U.S.S. Callister”), in the dark comedy Game Night , Netflix’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things , and as a morally bankrupt FBI agent in Judas and the Black Messiah most recently.

Jungle Cruise could technically qualify as the latest of his multiple Disney projects, having appeared in Twentieth Century Fox’s Like Mike as a teen and Fargo - FX’s anthology series based on the 1996 Coen Brothers movie. The former Friday Night Lights cast member also worked with Steven Spielberg on Bridge of Spies , was directed by Martin Scorsese for The Irishman and the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon , narrated Vice , and his role in Antlers (one of the most anticipated upcoming horror movies ) will finally hit the screen in October. 2021.

Édgar Ramírez (Aguirre)

Also playing one of the villains in Jungle Cruise , named Aguirre, is Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez, who has played everybody from Gianni Versace to the role of Bohdi in the remake of Point Break after breaking out in Hollywood in a small The Bourne Ultimatum part. This led to getting second billing in the possession thriller Deliver Us From Evil , the lead in sports biopic Hands of Stone , and a few Netflix movies, including 2017’s Bright and the family comedy Yes Day in 2021. Following Jungle Cruise (his second film with Emily Blunt after The Girl on the Train ) Ramírez will reunite with his Zero Dark Thirty co-star Jessica Chastain in Netflix’s The 355 and has joined the Borderlands cast for Eli Roth’s film adaptation of the popular video game series.

Veronica Falcón (Trader Sam)

Portraying a gender-swapped version of Trader Sam - a classic character from the original Jungle Cruise attraction - is Veronica Falcón, who made her English-language debut in the 2007 thriller Not Forgotten years before starring alongside The Suicide Squad ’s Alice Braga on USA’s Queen of the South and on HBO’s Perry Mason series reboot later in 2020. The following year has been huge for the Mexican actress so far, from a small part on the Falcon and Winter Soldier cast , a large part on the Why Women Kill cast, and an appearance in the latest of the Purge movies , The Forever Purge . Falcón will next star on Ozark Season 4 , in The Starling alongside Melissa McCarthy and Timothy Olyphant, and Apple TV+’s Mr. Corman with creator and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Andy Nyman (Sir James Hobbs-Coddington)

Another British actor who could likely call Jungle Cruise the most high-profile credit on his resume to date (at least to American audiences) is Andy Nyman, who previously worked with director Jaume Collet-Serra on the Liam Neeson action thriller The Commuter in 2019. Much earlier, he starred in the original Death at a Funeral from 2007 , played The Tumor in Kick-Ass 2 , and appeared on Netflix’s Peaky Blinders as Winston Churchill. The co-writer, co-director, and star of Ghost Stories - one of the most acclaimed anthology horror movies in recent memory - also played a Jail Guard in Star Wars: The Last Jedi , had a recurring role in Amazon’s series reboot of Hanna , and starred in the Academy Award-winning biopic Judy in 2019.

It looks like the Jungle Cruise cast may help drive Disney’s latest theme park attraction-based movie toward a treasure trove of riches.

Jungle Cruise is a 2021 American fantasy adventure comedy film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a story by Glenn Ficarra & John Requa and a screenplay written by Michael Green, Ficarra, and Requa, based on Walt Disney's theme park attraction of the same name .

Synopsis [ ]

Set during World War I , a riverboat captain named Frank takes a scientist and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life which is believed to possess healing powers. All the while, the trio must fight against dangerous wild animals and a competing German expedition.

In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors led by Don Aguirre travel to South America in search of the Tears of the Moon, a mythical tree whose petals can cure any illness, heal any injury, and lift any curse. After most of the men die in the jungle, the survivors are nursed back to health by a local tribe using the tree petals. When they refuse to reveal the location of the tree, the Spanish destroy the village. As punishment, the conquistadors are cursed to never die and never be able to leave sight of the river.

In 1916 London , Dr. Lily Houghton and her brother MacGregor detail Lily’s research on the Tears of the Moon to an association of Royal Society explorers , explaining that the petals could revitalize medicine and aid in the British war effort. The Houghtons request access to an arrowhead recovered by Dr. Albert Falls that Lily believes is key to locating the tree. When the association denies their request, believing the tree to be a myth and a female scientist unqualified to join their ranks, Lily steals the arrowhead instead. She narrowly avoids Prince Joachim, a German aristocrat who also wants the arrowhead and the tree.

In South America, Frank Wolff takes tourists on jungle river cruises, which he embellishes with fake dangers and corny jokes. When his boat engine is repossessed by businessman Nilo, he attempts to steal it back. Caught in the act by Lily, Frank pretends to be Nilo and arrogantly tells her that the Tears of the Moon is a myth and that she will not be able to handle the dangers of the jungle, but changes his tone when he notices that Lily is in possession of the arrowhead. Frank’s deception is revealed when the real Nilo shows up, but Lily hires Frank anyway after he underbids Nilo and bravely fights a wild jaguar.

Frank, Lily, and MacGregor depart on Frank’s boat, but are almost intercepted by Nilo attempting to get his engine back, mercenaries hired by Joachim to retrieve the arrowhead from Lily, and Joachim himself attacking in a German submarine. After they make their escape, it is revealed that the attacking jaguar was actually Frank’s pet Proxima, and Lily wonders if Frank can be trusted.

Joachim locates the cursed conquistadors, whose bodies have turned to stone due to them traveling too far from the river, and have been infested over time by tree roots, snakes, and insects. Joachim frees them by diverting the river, and offers to help them break the curse if they help him to retrieve the arrowhead.

As Frank, Lily and MacGregor continue down the river, they become closer. MacGregor reveals to Frank that he was nearly disowned by his family due to being gay, but Lily stood by him. Breaking into Frank’s cabin, Lily finds photos and drawings of new inventions such as the automobile, but also discovers drawings of the arrowhead and research on the Tears of the Moon. Lily accuses Frank of wanting the tree for himself, but he explains he gave up searching for it a long time ago and believed it couldn’t be found. They are attacked by a tribe of “ cannibals ” who demand the arrowhead, but this is revealed to be another deception by Frank working with a friendly tribe. Frank apologizes and says he was unable to call off the plan, but Lily rebuffs him.

Trader Sam, the tribe’s female leader, translates the writing on the arrowhead, revealing the location of the tree, and that it only blooms under a blood moon. The conquistadors attack and manage to take the arrowhead; Frank recovers it and gives it to Lily, but is stabbed through the chest with a sword and falls to his death. Lily runs away from the river so that the Spaniards cannot follow her.

The next morning, Lily discovers that Frank has miraculously survived. He reveals that his real name is Francisco, and he is actually one of the cursed conquistadors, unable to die or leave the river. The expedition to find the tree was originally a noble one to save Aguirre's sick daughter, Anna, but when the natives were attacked by the Spaniards, Frank switched sides to help the villagers. After years of fighting, Frank trapped Aguirre and the others in a cave away from the river. He then spent time searching for the tree to lift his own curse, but had been unable to find it without the arrowhead.

An injured MacGregor stays behind with Trader Sam while Lily and Frank make the final journey to the tree. MacGregor is captured by Joachim and forced to reveal the location of the tree. Frank, Lily, the Germans, and the Spaniards all converge on the tree, which begins to bloom under the blood moon. The moon passes quickly as they fight, and Lily is only able to recover one petal. MacGregor kills Joachim, and Frank crashes his boat to block the river, turning himself, Aguirre and the other Spaniards into stone. Lily uses the petal to revive Frank and break the curse, only afterwards discovering that due to a shift in the moonlight, there is one petal left for Lily’s research.

Returning to the United Kingdom, the society has offered full membership to Lily, which she rejects. She shows Frank all of London and gives him his first driving lesson in her automobile as well as delivering a corny joke herself, worthy of the latter's admiration.

• During the Jingle Cruise, one of the crates dropped in the African Veldt was addressed to Nilo Nemolato.
• On a shelf over the door for The Pach 's room is a small bookshelf. One of the books is titled "My Interests Happily Lay Elsewhere" by MacGregor Houghton. This alludes to MacGregor's quote implying his homosexual attraction from the film.

Jungle Cruise promises to be an adventurous and exhilarating movie. Here's who's who in Disney's latest theme-park-inspired film.

With the promise of adventure, excitement, legends and curses , Disney’s Juggle Cruise is sure to be an exhilarating movie. It takes its inspiration from the boat attraction of the same name, which can be found at four Disney theme parks worldwide, and its premise is the search for the legendary Tree of Life. The only problem is that that tree, which could greatly improve medicine, is supposedly deep within the Amazon Jungle.

Intent on making the discovery of a lifetime, a British scientist and her brother travel to South America and enlist the services of a local captain, who runs a less-than-pristine riverboat attraction. Along the way, they will have to face the dangerous wildlife and the deadly environment of the Amazon. And to make matters worse, there has to be a villain of some kind, so an Imperial German expedition is also racing to find the same legendary tree. With all that to keep track of, here's who’s who ahead of  Jungle Cruise’s  release.

Dwayne Johnson as “Skipper” Frank Wolff

“The Rock” plays Frank Wolff, who owns a jungle cruise business that he describes as the “cheapest” expedition of its kind. Frank tends to be shrewd and cynical but can be noble when the need arises. During Jungle Cruise , Frank is hired to offer passage to two explorers on their quest for the Tree of Life on his boat La Quila but only agrees after being offered a large sum of money. His character is based on the skippers from the original Jungle Cruise attraction, and his attire takes inspiration from Charlie Allnut from The African Queen .

Emily Blunt as Dr. Lily Houghton

The star of A Quiet Place II , Emily Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, who is a bit like Indian Jones -- eccentric and always looking for an adventure. According to Blunt , Lily is “brave and fearless and wild, and she’s brilliant-minded and humble.” In Jungle Cruise , the character is a British scientist and explorer determined to find the Tree of Life to study it for its medicinal benefits. She, along with her brother, travel to South America, where they hire Skipper Frank Wolff to give them passage up the Amazon River on their quest.

Jack Whitehall as McGregor Houghton

Jack Whitehall is well known for playing Gothi the Troll Priest in Frozen , but in Jungle Cruise , he portrays Lily Houghton’s younger brother, McGregor, who is unambiguously gay. Fiercely devoted to Lily, he accompanies her to the Amazon, even if he isn't the adventurer that she is. In fact, he is skeptical about going after the tree in the first place.

Paul Giamatti as Nilo Nemolato

Paul Giamatti, who recently appeared in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake , plays Nilo Nemolato, the irritable harbormaster where Frank docks his riverboat. For those concerned about missing Giamatti's performance, don't worry, Nilo can be spotted by a pet cockatoo that accompanies him everywhere.

Édgar Ramírez as Aguirre, Quim Gutiérrez as Melchor and Dani Rovira as Sancho

Ramírez, Gutiérrez and Rovira play a trio of cursed, Spanish conquistadors who are also looking for the Tree of Life. Aguirre’s character, specifically, is based on a real-life conquistador named Lope de Aguirre, who was once dubbed “El Loco” after driving himself mad during a failed search for the lost city of El Dorado.

Jesse Plemons as Prince Joachim

Jesse Plemons, who is best known for his roles in films like Game Night and  The Irishman , portrays Prince Joachim in Jungle Cruise . As with any good film, there has to be a villain, and Joachim offers that for this Disney flick. At the same time Dr. Lily Houghton is searching for the Tree of Life, Joachim, who is a deranged German aristocrat, is funding a competing, military expedition to claim the discovery as his own accomplishment.

Veronica Falcón as Trader Sam

Veronica Falcón plays Lupe in the 2020 HBO reboot of Perry Mason , but in Jungle Cruise, she plays a female version of Trader Sam from the Jungle Cruise ride. Trader Sam is the chief is the chieftain of the Indigenous tribe that protects the Tree of Life everyone is searching for. However, the character doesn't come without its own set of issues, as it was removed from the Disney attraction earlier this year after being deemed offensive.

Other Named, Minor Characters

There are other minor characters in Jungle Cruise , but ahead of the film’s release, details on their roles are slim. Raphael Alejandro plays Zaqueu, Simone Lockhart is Anna, Philipp Maximilian tackles Axel, Sulem Calderon portrays Quila and Andy Nyman takes on Sir James Hobbs-Coddington.

Jungle Cruise releases Friday in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.

Jungle Cruise stars Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson in a thrilling adventure into the unknown.

Jungle Cruise is Disney's new action-adventure family film, inspired by one of the original rides at Disneyland in California. Set in the early 20th century, the film follows an intrepid scientist as she embarks upon a mission to find a legendary tree deep within the jungle, whose petals are believed to have the power to cure any illness and break any curse. In order to get there, she enlists a slippery and cynical steamboat captain, and her extremely reluctant younger brother.

Jungle Cruise release date

Jungle Cruise will be released in cinemas on Friday July 30. As with other recent Disney releases like Cruella and Black Widow , it will also be available simultaneously to Disney+ subscribers via the Premier Access service for an additional one-off fee ( $30 in the US, £19.99 in the UK).

What is the plot of Jungle Cruise?

Dr Lily Houghton has spent many years studying reports of the fabled Tree Of Life, supposedly hidden deep within the jungle, whose petals are rumoured to have the power to cure any illness and break any curse. She wants to find the Tree and study its petals in the hope of advancing medical science — but it's the early 20th century, and very few people are willing to take a woman seriously on a matter like this.

Undeterred, Lily sets off to find it accompanied by her younger brother McGregor, who would much rather be safe on dry land enjoying a nice meal and a drink, but has nonetheless agreed to accompany his sister. Lily recruits steamboat captain Frank Wolff and his ramshackle vessel to help them get there, but the journey into the jungle is relatively uncharted and filled with danger.

However, Lily is not the only person looking for the Tree Of Life, as unhinged German aristocrat Prince Joachim is also determined to find it for his own purposes — and along the way she learns that Aguirre, a conquistador who set out to find the Tree Of Life many years before, met a terrible fate...

Lily Houghton es una exploradora con una misión de investigación: encontrar un árbol con poderes curativos en la Amazonia que cuenta una leyenda. Para ello necesita la punta de una flecha específica para desentrañar este misterio. Por otro lado se encuentra Frank, un carismático capitán de un bote fluvial que se dedica a hacer tours por el Amazonas con toda clase de peligros orquestados.

Lily tiene que buscar un medio de transporte para llegar a Lágrimas de Cristal, el lugar donde se encontraría el árbol con poderes curativos. Lily lo encuentra en Frank, quien ve en la gran cantidad de dinero de ella el motivo por el que ayudarla. Los dos se embarcarán en una aventura con varios misterios, peligros y con un precio por viaje que no hace más que subir.

Al igual que sucedió con la saga de 'Piratas del Caribe', Disney prepara este nuevo proyecto utilizando como fuente de inspiración una de las atracciones presentes en su parque temático: 'Jungle Cruise'. Se trata de un viaje que permite a los visitantes del parque atravesar exóticos lugares africanos a través del río Nilo y Congo con el objetivo de descubrir sus llamativas y salvajes criaturas. La jugada no le salió bien con la estimable 'Tomorrowland: El mundo del mañana' , pero mucho me sorprendería que no lo lograsen con 'Jungle Cruise' .

Inspirada en una de las atracciones más veteranas de Disney, 'Jungle Cruise' es una película de aventuras que recupera el sabor de un cine que ya no se estila en Hollywood . La comparación con 'Indiana Jones' es inevitable, pero viéndola me acordé bastante más de 'La momia' , la estupenda superproducción de Stephen Sommers liderada por Brendan Fraser y Rachel Weisz.

Sabe lo que quiere

Una de las claves para ello está en la dinámica entre sus protagonistas y en los propios personajes. Es verdad que el desarrollo no es especialmente profundo, pero sí que se nota la suficiente preocupación en el guion firmado por Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra y John Requa por perfilar de forma efectiva sus motivaciones, dando de paso las armas suficientes a todos ellos para brillar dentro de la función que cumplen dentro de la película.

Está claro que Dwayne Johnson , especialmente inspirado cuando le toca hacer bromas con juegos de palabras cuestionables, y Emily Blunt , muy enérgica y convincente en el rol de aventurera pícara con las ideas claras, son las grandes estrellas de la función y sus personajes los que tienen más fondo. Además, la química entre ambos es innegable, siendo una de las claves para que 'Jungle Cruise' opte por un tono juguetón sin perder nunca el equilibrio necesario para que el espectador nunca piense que quiere más de un elemento concreto de la película, sino simplemente disfrutar con lo que se va proponiendo a lo largo del viaje.

Para ello, se opta por echa mano de la carta de la desconfianza del personaje de Blunt hacia el de Johnson, quien no deja de recurrir a cualquier truco a su alcance para lograr salir adelante. Obviamente, el camino a seguir es ir estrechando lazos entre ambos, sin olvidarnos del curioso factor que supone el hermano de ella. Al igual que John Hannah en 'La momia', Jack Whitehall cumple una función más cómica que cualquier otra cosa -aunque hay por ahí una subtrama no suficientemente desarrollada que podría haberle dado mucho más peso-, pero en 'Jungle Cruise' hasta se acuerdan de darle un factor emocional que fortalece a su personaje.

De hecho, la importancia de lo emocional es algo que se aplica a la práctica totalidad de personajes con peso real en la película. Una forma muy efectiva de conseguir cierta conexión con el espectador , sea para incrementar nuestras simpatías hacia ellos o para dar más matices a una de las amenazas a la que han de hacer frente.

Todo en su sitio

Eso no quita que en 'Jungle Cruise' también haya tiempo para que lo casi caricaturesco tenga presencia en todo momento, desde detalles más controlados como la "mascota" del protagonista hasta otros en los que se mide muy bien su tendencia al exceso, caso del divertido villano encarnado por Jesse Plemons . Algo similar podría decirse en el caso de Paul Giamatti , pero su peso en la película es mucho menor y muy localizado en el tramo inicial de la función.

A cambio, también algunos detalles más oscuros, pero ahí sí se echa en falta ese dominio del terror del que hacía gala Sommers en 'La momia'. En su lugar, Jaume Collet-Serra apuesta por un enfoque más vivo, ahí sí recordando algo más a la saga 'Piratas del Caribe', donde sus diseños más siniestros estaban más controlados y a menudo orientados a complementar la acción en lugar de a darle más peso específico en lo individual.

Eso sí, pocas pegas tengo que ponerle a tomar esa decisión, ya que es una película que sabe muy bien lo que busca. El objetivo principal es hacérselo pasar en grande al espectador , utilizando tanto a sus personajes como a la historia para lograrlo pero sin sacrificarlo en ningún momento en aras del espectáculo.

Y lo curioso es que Collet-Serra lo logra creando al mismo tiempo un espectáculo de primera incuestionable en lo visual, vigoroso en lo narrativo y seductor en lo argumental. 'Jungle Cruise' pertenece a esa estirpe de películas que tanto disfrutábamos volviendo a ver una y otra vez, con la particularidad de que bebe de ahí pero no se convierte en esclava de ellas. Aquí no está todo al servicio de un homenaje hueco o de una nostalgia postiza. Todo se siente genuino dentro del estilo que se propone.

Eso no quita que 'Jungle Cruise' sea un blockbuster llamado a arrasar en taquilla por encima de todo, pero esos también pueden hacerse limitándose a cumplir con el mínimo exigible o con cierto mimo . Aquí estamos ante un ejemplo del segundo grupo, una película que realmente justifica dejar nuestro cinismo a la entrada de la sala y disfrutar como cuando éramos mucho más jóvenes. Obviamente, tiene sus problemas -sobre todo cierta irregularidad en su tramo central- y si te centras en ellos, podrás echarla por Tierra, pero la verdad es que no creo que lo merezca.

En resumidas cuentas

'Jungle Cruise' es un ejemplo de muy buen cine comercial . Una gran aventura con ecos de 'La momia' y 'Piratas del Caribe' -aunque bastante más de la primera que de la segunda-. A eso unes un reparto muy bien elegido encabezados por unos carismáticos Dwayne Johnson y Emily Blunt, un guion solvente y un director que sabe cómo crear un gran espectáculo y no limitarse a intentar dar la sensación de uno.

Jungle Cruise - What We Know So Far

In the early 2000s, Walt Disney Pictures took a gamble on an action-adventure blockbuster based on one of the company's most popular theme park attractions. That film, " Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ," was a runaway hit for Disney, spawning a franchise that's produced four films (and counting) and setting the stage for other potential theme park-inspired films to follow. While most critics agree that the "Pirates" franchise saw diminishing returns almost immediately, "The Curse of the Black Pearl" remains a classic for the ages, and exactly the kind of four-quadrant film that studios are always salivating for. 

Since "Pirates," however,  we've seen the theme park-to-blockbuster approach fail with projects like "The Haunted Mansion" and "Tomorrowland," but the House of Mouse seems determined to give the formula the old college try (at least) once more. The next big theme park ride-inspired film from Disney will be "Jungle Cruise," a new action-adventure epic starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt . 

After more than a decade in development, the film has finally charted a course into theaters, and from the looks of things it's going to bring the adventurous spirit of "Pirates of the Caribbean" to a different time and place, filtered through two of the world's most charismatic movie stars. We can't wait to see how "Jungle Cruise" turns out, so we've gathered everything we know about the film so far right here, from the cast to the trailer to an unexpected controversy. Here's everything you need to know before "Jungle Cruise" hits theaters.

What's the release date for Jungle Cruise?

Back in 2018, it looked like we'd be seeing "Jungle Cruise" much sooner. As the film pushed through its development schedule, the Walt Disney Company was prepared to roll the film out as early as 2019, and set an initial release date for October of that year. That would have pitted the film against eventual hits like "Joker,"  but well before that release date was upon us, Disney shifted the film. There was some speculation at the time that "Jungle Cruise" had been moved to occupy a prime theatrical release window that had previously been reserved for a "Star Wars" film. Remember, in 2018 Disney was still purportedly working toward a goal of releasing a "Star Wars" flick every year , alternating between main saga stories and spinoffs. Then "Solo: A Star Wars Story" arrived to disappointing box office  returns in May of 2018, setting the stage for a bit of a retooling. By 2019, there were  no "Star Wars" films planned for 2020 , so "Jungle Cruise" was tapped in to compete in the busy summer box office schedule. 

We got another potential release date after that first false start: July 24, 2020. The hope way back in the before-times was that the studio would capitalize on all the summer box office energy and emerge to dominate a less-crowded field. What sweet summer children we all were back then. In a sane world, it made perfect financial sense, but we live in this timeline, so obviously another change had to be made. Now, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, that 2020 date has come and gone without a whiff of a boat-ripened Dwayne Johnson. A few rumors circulated that Disney might go the VOD route with the first entry in its nascent franchise, but that all proved to be hearsay, as Disney remained committed to a traditional theatrical release for its adventurous tentpole. 

Fear not, Disney fans: Just like the recently shuttered theme parks that originally inspired the film, "Jungle Cruise" is about to be open for business at last. "Jungle Cruise" will enjoy a traditional theatrical release on July 30, 2021, and it seems like this one's really going to take. That means this release date comes almost three full years after the formal conclusion of filming back in September 2018. We'll have to wait for the press junkets to see if Johnson and Blunt even remember what the movie's about. Mark your calendars (in pencil).

A trailer for Jungle Cruise pulls up to the dock

After years of development, the first official footage from Disney's "Jungle Cruise" finally screened for fans at the company's D23 Expo in the summer of 2019. A few months later, in October, the first trailer finally arrived online. The footage revealed an action-comedy that owes a lot to previous period pieces in the subgenre, like Disney's own " Pirates of the Caribbean " and Universal's "Mummy" franchise from the 2000s . It begins by setting up the quest of scientist Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) as she makes a shocking discovery in London that leads her to travel to the Amazon in search of the Tree of Life. Her ticket to this world-changing discovery is Frank (Dwayne Johnson), an unscrupulous riverboat captain who's really just in it for the money. 

The trailer begins by establishing the film as a period drama set sometime in the early 20th century, though not so early that automobiles aren't prevalent. From there, it's more-or-less non-stop action and comedy. We get to see Lily evade villains by doing a little a bit of improvised urban exploring, we see Frank using various tricks of his trade to impress tourists on the river, and then we see the two of them meet and team up. What we don't see a whole lot of is the actual jungle cruise the characters are set to embark on, but there's just enough here to hint that the trip will turn supernatural with help from an ancient curse.

A second full-length trailer that came down the pike in 2021 is absolutely action-packed. Though it keeps the focus on Blunt and Johnson, often in pursuit of or being pursued by some nasty business, supernatural or otherwise, it does provide a few more glimpses of the actual cruise in question. There's even some Jesse Plemons action in what looks to be a German U-Boat. With the release date right around the corner, this is likely the final glimpse of the project before game time, so go ahead and fire it up.

Who's in the Jungle Cruise cast?

"Jungle Cruise" is set to be a rollicking action-comedy vehicle in the vein of past Disney hits like "Pirates of the Caribbean," which was also based on one of the House of Mouse's most popular theme park attractions. As with Johnny Depp and the first "Pirates" film , one of the keys to the project's success is picking a star to frame the film around, and then filling out a compelling ensemble. 

In the case of "Jungle Cruise," the star role will be filled by not one but two stars with experience in both action and comedy. The film's leading man is Dwayne Johnson , who began circling the movie as far back as 2015, and finally hopped aboard in 2017. In 2018, it was revealed that Johnson's co-star for the film would be Emily Blunt, who's proven her action chops on films like "Edge of Tomorrow" and "A Quiet Place," and already had major successes with Disney in films like "Into the Woods" and "Mary Poppins Returns." Both leads are known commodities, and by the looks of the trailers released to date, a lot of the movie's success will be hanging on their performances.

While Johnson and Blunt are the key leads to the film, they're not the only stars attached. The film will also feature " Breaking Bad" and "Fargo" standout Jesse Plemons in a villainous role, with British comedian Jack Whitehall as the brother of Blunt's character. Édgar Ramírez plays Aguirre, a mercenary leading another expedition to the Tree of Life in direct competition with the Johnson-Blunt cruise, and "Billions" star Paul Giamatti is involved in a role originally described as a "crusty harbormaster" (via Deadline ). It's as star-studded as you might expect from the franchise Disney hopes will become the successor to "Pirates of the Caribbean."

What's the plot of Jungle Cruise?

"Jungle Cruise" is a period film that's heavy on the kind of action-comedy blend that inspired classics like the "Indiana Jones" films . It's a swashbuckling adventure that will feature no small number of set pieces and big effects. The film follows Lily, a scientist who makes a shocking discovery in London that could lead her to the legendary Tree of Life. The trouble is, the Tree lies deep in the Amazon rainforest, which means she's got to travel to South America and set herself up with transportation. 

Once there, she meets Frank, a jungle cruise captain who seems more interested in conning tourists out of their money than helping anyone to find a place that sounds like it's make-believe. Lily and her brother have plenty of money to hire Frank, though, so he takes the job. From there, it's an all-out adventure into the heart of the Amazon river, but the journey to the Tree of Life won't be easy. Lily's not the only one trying to find it, of course, and it turns out she and Frank may also be contending with an ancient curse.

All the elements are there. The quest. The elevated, fantasy-historical setting. The stylish visual effects. Heck — there's even an ancient curse. It really is "Curse of the Black Pearl" on the Amazon River in the best possible ways. There are certainly worse films to emulate, after all.

Jungle Cruise's long voyage to the screen

The film's journey to the big screen begins with the theme park attraction's opening at Disneyland in 1955. For our purposes, though, the real road to a movie version of the ride kicked off in the 2000s, after Walt Disney Pictures saw major success with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." That film, also based on a Disney Parks attraction, launched an action-adventure franchise for the studio, so Disney started to mine other possible park rides for film material. "Jungle Cruise" seemed like a natural fit, and in 2006 Disney began trying to nail down a script (via IGN ). 

"Jungle Cruise" took what seemed at the time like a big leap toward the screen back in 2011, when it was reported by EW that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, the duo that helped make "Toy Story" a hit, would team up again to star in the film. That pairing ultimately fizzled, and by 2015 Dwayne Johnson was expressing interest in the project. Johnson was dubbed the film's official star in 2017, and by 2018 "Jungle Cruise" had begun shooting .

Who's at the helm of Jungle Cruise?

In 2017, with Johnson officially onboard to star in the film, "Jungle Cruise" began to set up the rest of its creative team — both in front of and behind the camera. Johnson, as he has in many of his recent blockbusters, took a rather active role in the process, because he's also serving as one of the project's producers. In the spring of 2017 the film began searching for a director, and Johnson expressed a preference for "Wonder Woman" helmer Patty Jenkins. Jenkins ultimately stayed at Warner Bros. to direct  a "Wonder Woman" sequel , and by the summer of 2017 Jaume Collet-Serra was revealed as the director after passing on the opportunity to direct a "Suicide Squad" sequel. That "Suicide Squad" film eventually went to James Gunn of "Guardians of the Galaxy" fame, so everyone pretty much ended up where they belonged.

Collet-Serra, whose previous projects include films like "The Shallows," is directing "Jungle Cruise" from a script by Glenn Ficara ("Bad Santa"), Michael Green ("Logan"), and John Requa ("Focus"). The film will be scored by Oscar nominee James Newton Howard, whose recent credits include "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms."

Some Jungle Cruise controversy

Though "Jungle Cruise" is being positioned by Disney as a crowd-pleasing action adventure flick, the film began generating controversy well before its release. In August of 2018, Jack Whitehall announced via Instagram  that he'd been cast in the film, and it was later revealed that he'd be playing McGregor Houghton, the brother of Emily Blunt's character, Lily. That same month, a report surfaced from U.K. tabloid The Sun which revealed Whitehall's character would be among the first major openly gay characters in a Disney production, and that his character is "one who is hugely effete, very camp and very funny."

The report quickly generated controversy , not because Disney would feature an openly gay character in the film, but because of how the character would reportedly be portrayed. Many social media users worried that Disney was simply leaning back on tired gay stereotypes for its first major gay character, while others were concerned about who would play the role. That Whitehall, a straight man, would be playing such a potentially groundbreaking role for Disney instead of a gay actor was also a point of contention. 

Disney has not officially responded to the controversy, but Whitehall has also gained defenders since the outrage. We'll just have to wait until July 30 to see how it all pans out.

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center. 

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city. 

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

• The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
• Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
• Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
• The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.
