I didn't know anything about Kate Rusby until I saw her live at Radio 2's Festival in a Day this September gone, in Hyde Park. Among a number of names I was very familiar with and looking forward to enjoying live, she was one of the few unknowns to me.
Honestly, if I had hated the rest of the festival (and for the record, I didn't; it was fantastic), it would still have been worth going for Kate Rusby's five-song set - for that sublime live performance, and for the fact that this was how I found her.
Most people considering seeing her live won't be in the dark as I was, so I won't go on about what you already know - the exquisite beauty of the folk songs she writes, her heavenly voice, the understated fingerpicking of the acoustic guitar underscoring every song. I will tell you that she is brilliant live, as you might imagine; her voice is every bit as glorious when you're facing the stage she's on as it is when you're sitting inside curled up with her music coming through your earphones, or standing outside in the English sunshine with the sound of it drifting out through the kitchen window.
She has a great stage presence too, largely because she is such a warm and sweet character. She talks as if having a casual chat with thousands of people at once, in her lovely accent, and is very down-to-earth. When I saw her, she was full of praise for her home county (it was a couple of days after the PM's less than complimentary remarks were overheard and reported) and implored us all to visit.
Overall a really great and uplifting set to have been able to witness live, even just as a standalone event; and, as I said, it introduced me to a singer/songwriter I now can't stop listening to (and, by extension, a genre I had neglected for far too long)... 10/10 from me. Awkward Annie was a great song to finish on, too.

Kate Rusby is one of the biggest names in acoustic and folk music. She is sometimes hailed as The Barnsley Nightingale. Rusby is one of those singer songwriters that has so many accolades to her name having headlined numerous British National folk festivals to date. She opens with her song “Underneath the Stars”, a beautiful song that has this whole audience completely quiet making way for the beautiful harmonies to shine through. Tonight she is promoting her Ghost album that comes out later this year but of course she blasts through so many of her biggest singles to date, with songs such as “All Over Again” which featured vocals from Ronan Keating on the original, “You Belong to Me” which was on the album “The Girl Who Couldn’t Fly”. Her voice is pretty and delicate, with quite a textured sound, adding some beautiful melodies to the chords that she plays on her guitar. Her finger picking technique is a very endearing feature of her songs too.
Being Honest didn't know anything about Kate Rusby as went along with friends, so a little apprehensive. Amazed by my reaction to the show being very positive with Kate's down to earth approach to her music and her interaction with her audience.
Kate's insight to why she was presenting these Christmas songs was very interesting to learn and a delight to listen to. Her backing band were amazing, in fact it made me wish I had kept up on my accordian lessons from my teenage days - and wow all the musicians were brilliant. Audience participation in choruses was enjoyable.
Come back to Norwich again Kate you have another fan.
Excellent again!

2023 ‘Established 1973’ Christmas Tour Kate Rusby celebrates turning 50 with a brand new Christmas album, Kate rounds off 2023 and celebrates her 50th birthday in style with a Christmas tour full of warmth, sparkles and her festive music from her new and previous Christmas albums. “Kate Rusby remains Britain’s most popular female folk singer because she has mastered the art of Christmas songs”–The Guardian Hailed as‘ The Start of Christmas’ for many, a Kate Rusby Christmas Concert perpetuates the tradition of Yorkshire carols, specific carols still sung in the pubs of South Yorkshire. Her happiness, humour and storytelling are a feature of Kate’s live shows branding herself as a ‘Holly Head’–someone who loves Christmas. Joining her on stage for this unmissable evening of Christmas cheer will be, as ever, her hugely talented and intuitive band of musicians including producer and husband Damien O’Kane as well as a top-flight brass quintet affectionately known as The Brass Boys. A folk singer at heart, she’s taken the genre to new heights appealing way beyond the folk scene and her Yorkshire roots, headlining in the UK and internationally, performing with other big names in music across genres. She has a number of TV, radio and film credits to her name as well as her own record company and festival.

Forever proud to call herself a folk singer, Kate Rusby's vocals never fail to connect the heart of a song to that of her audience.
Named as one of the Top Ten Folk Voices of the Century, a Mercury Prize Winner, 6-times BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner and a warm, Yorkshire sense of humour to boot, Rusby has achieved an unprecedented cross-over appeal. Despite stepping into a more contemporary production on her last few albums, she has stayed true to her roots. Her cover of Manic Monday (Hand Me Down 2020) featured on the BBC Radio 2 playlist. The guests on 2022 album 30 : Happy Returns is testament to Rusby's wide appeal and include the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, KT Tunstall, and Beth Nielson Chapman.
Celebrating over 30 years of touring and 22 albums including her latest beautifully stunning Christmas album, Light Years , released in December 2023, Kate and her band of merry and very talented men will be visiting us in her 50th birthday year with songs old and new.

Kate Rusby announces ‘Light Years’ Christmas Album and Tour
Over the years, Kate Rusby has perpetuated the South Yorkshire tradition of carols and the sing-a-longs. For over two hundred years, from late November to New Year’s Day, North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire communities would congregate on Sunday lunchtimes in their local public house to belt out their own versions of familiar carols, carols that were often frowned upon by the church in Victorian times as ‘too happy’. For Kate, abiding memories of childhood are full of carols in the tap room of many a Yorkshire pub, surrounded by family, community, warmth, happiness, colouring books and crisps. For many others, the season hasn’t started until a Rusby Christmas album has been aired or one of the band’s seasonal shindig shows has been attended. Or both!
Well…
Kate is now set to deliver her seventh Christmas album, Light Years (Digital, Vinyl and CD). It will be released on December 1 st , three days before her fiftieth birthday. The release is accompanied by her annual festive tour, which kicks off in December; see dates below.
She’s in multiple celebration mode. More than thirty years of pursuing her unique path through the music world have earned her a devoted and loyal fanbase and seen her become a BBC Folk Award winner and a Mercury Prize nominee. Those decades have led Kate to a state of being where the years feel wondrously light – a pleasure and a privilege. In her own words, “I feel so lucky to be still making music after 32 years and even luckier to enjoy it so much.”
The opener, ‘Spean’, features Kate’s fabulous brass boys and was arranged by Andrew Duncan. While picking up where last year’s 30th-anniversary album, 30: Happy Returns, left off, Light Years offers possibly Kate’s biggest collaborative coup yet – “The Moon Shines Bright”, featuring Alison Krauss and Ron Block. It’s a song Kate holds dear, one that she first sang at age fifteen in a production of The Mystery Plays.
Singing with Alison and Ron felt like the best early birthday present imaginable: “When I was sixteen, my Dad was a sound engineer working at Edale Bluegrass Festival. I was sitting beside him, when onto the stage came Alison Krauss and Union Station, including Ron Block, who plays banjo and sings with Alison after all these years. I was completely blown away and my love of bluegrass began there. I have been a fan of Alison and Ron ever since. Ron has become a dear friend and has recorded on my last few albums, so it feels like we have completed the circle somehow.”
See the full tracklisting below, which includes a seamless mash-up of ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ and ‘Sleigh Ride’ and ‘Nowell, Nowell’ that sits atop the kind of rich musical bed we’ve heard on recent albums, deepened by Moog moods and Damien O’Kane’s lush guitar sounds. A layered and atmospheric cover of ‘A Spaceman Came Travelling’ similarly shimmers. In glorious contrast, the Chris Sugden (aka Sid Kipper) parody ‘Arrest These Merry Gentlemen’ will put listeners in light-hearted humour.
The simple beauty of Kate’s voice and Damien’s guitar on the album closer, ‘Joseph’ signs off with a warm embrace.

‘Everybody loves and respects Kate Rusby, not just for her lovely voice, but for the way she has moved folk forward while remaining true to tradition…’ – Sunday Times
‘ …. exquisite interpretations of traditional material from the pocket sized folk singer with the heartbreakingly tremulous voice and bawdy Yorkshire wit’ – Daily Telegraph
Kate Rusby is often hailed as the ‘first lady of folk’. Announcing herself to the music press in 1999 with a Mercury Music Prize, she has forged an impressive 30-year career, breaking records and headlining everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to Cambridge Folk Festival.
A remarkable, interpretive singer, Kate’s soulful vocals resonate with the wistful beauty of an earthbound angel. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction – no matter how old or how modern – she has that rare ability to transport her audience, touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination.
Audiences are sure to be thoroughly entertained by Kate’s choice of much-loved classics from her back catalogue stretching over the past 30 years of music making, together with a selection of fresh new songs from her most recent albums and new releases including her brand new album ‘30’.
As ever, she will be joined on stage by her band, each a virtuoso in their own right and including her husband and producer Damien O’ Kane. They will be sure to delight you with their exceptional talents.
The crossover appeal Kate enjoys is unprecedented for a folk singer and has been achieved without resort to compromise. Her recent reimagined covers album Hand Me Down was her highest charting album to date.
Rusby’s wondrous singing and hugely engaging Yorkshire wit and the intuitive support of the band ensure that audiences will be treated to a truly remarkable and unforgettable concert experience.
Please note that this event will include haze effects,
