Keeper Password Manager

Without Keeper, I would be lost in passwords that I would have no choice but to write down somewhere (not exactly the most secure way to save them not to mention what if I loose my password book somewhere?). I have about 500 I have to keep straight at this point. Not that good at coming up with unique passwords so it's a good thing Keeper Password Manager has a random password generator to help me with unique passwords. I can customize the password generator to meet the paramaters of whatever website requirements for passwords are allowed and it does the rest for me. Keeper also has the option of saving important documents or files you don't want to be unprotected. These can be uploaded to the app and kept under lock and key giving me one password to retreive them all, which I might add can be combined with a 2nd verification method to keep everything safe and sound. So, If my master password is compromized somehow it will still not be enough for bad actors to steal my most important secure data. Love my Keeper Password Manager. Some websites are not friendly to Keeper but I always have the app on my computer to run by alternate means of copy paste of Password retrieval.

Customer Support Makes the Difference

I used Dashlane for a number of years and enjoyed its slick appearance and ease of use. Then they began to transition to the web app from the desktop app and the problems began. Customer support was horrendus. Emails would go unanswered for days and then the response would include an apology for the time lapse and a request for more information. The last straw was a "misunderstanding" of instructions which removed my data and put me back at Square One. So after long research I picked Keeper and ponied up the hundred bucks for a year of comprehensive support, including unlimited 30-minute phone consultations. It was a home run. The customer support team was accessible, responsive, hands-on including screen sharing, and totally knowledgeable. After an orientation session to get going I was fully up and running. After a time I scheduled a second session and learned things I had no idea the software could do. The time I have saved has been huge. So four stars for the software, and five stars for customer support.

2FA and User Interface Anomalies

I purchased Keeper because of its vault security and ability to span that secure vault onto my three devices, MacBook Pro (2014), iPad2 and iPhone7. The secure vault is available across devices, however, in one iPad and two iPhone instances, two-factor authentication does not work. On the Mac, several 2FA options are available which may function on other devices, but not the Mac. Also, the user interfaces are terribly inconsistent across devices. It appears that most of the product work went into the iPhone and less into the MacBook Pro and iPad. On all devices, there is no indication that the addon Breachwatch is executing, nor is there any explanation how you are notified when a breach occurs. On the Mac, if the vault uses folders, they do not appear in the autofill window; and the autofill records are not in the sorted order organized in the vault window, forcing an autofill search. On the Mac, after drilling downward in Settings, reversing the traversal upwards does not always show all the windows that were shown in the downward path. On the Mac, when saving a Chat session, there is no validation of the send-to email address, and the session can be lost. Keeper's Chat analysts were helpful but Support’s responses to emails concerning the above issues were mostly without replies.

Keeper Password Manager is considered one of the best password managers out there, and for good reason. Keeper is one of the most respected names in the security business, and this app places a big emphasis on helping companies keep sensitive data on lockdown – so you’d hope their security situation is up to snuff.

Happily, Keeper’s website boasts of some pretty impressive security credentials, with zero-knowledge design, high-end security auditing, market-leading encryption and impressive features elsewhere.

Beyond that, Keeper deploys powerful admin tools, great sharing options and remote access, so it could be a top-notch option for any business that wants a fully-featured password management system. Keeper: Plans and pricing

On the business front, SMBs should be catered for by the Keeper Business Plan at $3.75 / £4 / AUD$7 per user/month. The basic plan includes user password management, while administrators can manage user groups, enforce policies, and perform security audits. Enterprise plans , which need a custom quote, add support for single-sign-on authentication, automated team management, and advanced provisioning methods.

Additionally, you can add custom modules with additional features. These include the advanced reporting module for $10 / £10 / AUD$15 user/year, compliance reporting for the same price, file storage and sharing starting at $125 / £110 / AUD$190 year, dedicated onboarding and training for $750 / £650 / AUD$1,250 per year, dark web breach scanning for $20/user/year, and ultra-secure messaging for $20 / £20 / AUD$30 per user a year.

The company also recently released a Business Starter Plan for teams of between five and 10, as it hopes to break into a market of smaller startups. This costs $2 / £2 / AUD$3 per user/month.

For individuals, meanwhile, the Keeper Personal plan is available for just $2.92 / £3 / AUD$5 a month which supports unlimited passwords on an unlimited number of devices for an individual user. As with the business plan, you can pay extra for different modules – in this case secure file storage and the BreachWatch alerting system. There’s also the five-user Family Plan available for $6.25 / £6 / AUD$9 a month and has five private vaults.

Unfortunately, there’s no free plan for individuals or businesses, however if you're keen to keep costs down (and who isn't?), take a look at the Keeper Security promo codes currently available.

Keeper: Setup

It’s clear that Keeper’s developers put a lot of thought into its business products. Mass distribution is made easier thanks to command-line installation on Windows, while desktop and mobile apps and browser extensions are very easy to install. Most users will have themselves up and running in a matter of minutes.

Initial administrative setup will obviously take longer, but much thought has gone into streamlining this process, with multiple methods for bulk-importing users, like email auto-provisioning based on domain name, SSO, or API/SDK. After spending some time setting up various teams and roles, you need only add users as appropriate.

If you’re moving from another password manager, you can also import your existing credentials. This includes from browser-based systems like Google Password Manager and Edge Password Manager , as well as popular rival companies like LastPass and 1Password . Being a password manager aimed at businesses, it also supports importing from other business-focused alternatives like Zoho Vault and RoboForm .

Keeper: Interface and performance

Each user has their own encrypted vault for storing passwords, credential, and information, accessible through any number of desktop, mobile, and online apps. All the password management basics are here: a password generator or strong and unique passwords, identity management and payment information, and access to shared passwords. However, identity information for form filling is a bit limited, as you can’t create your own fields or add multiple addresses.

Administrators can easily manage multiple users, who can be assigned roles and divided into teams. Passwords, folders, and subfolders can be shared with individual users, teams, or roles, with the ability to disable password re-sharing, editing, or even viewing, while enforcement policies ensure everybody in your company is using or generating strong passwords. There is also an Admin Console for monitoring and managing Keeper across the organization. This can also help to enforce the use of best security practices like 2FA , and password security.

The app interface is intuitive and easy to use, with tabs for passwords, identities, security audit, and BreachWatch. In-browser password autofill and form-filling are well executed, with tabs for entering a password, address, or card information. It’s also great to see a separate area dedicated to IDs like driver’s licenses and passports, in an era when identities are both in regular use and targeted by criminals. Being able to call on passport information to book a flight can be much easier digitally than having to retrieve the physical passport, especially when you’re away from home.

The admin interface is equally agreeable to use, with a Dashboard that gives you a quick overview of user activity and any security issues, and an Admin tab for managing users, roles, teams, two-factor authentication, and provisioning. If you’ve paid for additional modules, you’ll have access to the Security Audit, BreachWatch, and Reporting & Alerts to manage these features. Everything is also clean and well laid out.

Platform support is good, too. Keeper works on Windows 7 and above, some of the most recent macOS versions, and popular Linux distros like Fedora, Red Hat, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint. There’s also iOS and Android support, and a password-filling extension that works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, and Opera. The main app can also run directly in your browser. That command-line installation is a boon, and the only thing missing here is functionality on only the most obscure browsers.

Some mobile users will be pleased to see that Keeper also has an Apple Watch app for on-the-go monitoring and quick access to things like notes of combination lock codes. In fact, if you’re really bored, you can use Keeper’s lock-shaped emoji stickers in iMessage chat. While this is totally pointless and nothing more than a gimmick, it’s really enlightening to see a company that’s dedicated to as many platforms and services as Keeper - very few come anywhere near.

Keeper: Passkeys

While Keeper may not have the heavy-hitting name and advertising budget that more well-known alternatives have, it’s not short of investment in the latest technologies. Already, Keeper has become an early adopted of passkeys and is actually one of the best sources of information on them, with an entire page dedicated to the websites that currently support the passwordless login method.

While Keeper supports passkeys in some instances, including the browser extension, it’s currently waiting for Android 14 and iOS 17 to enable third-party access later this year. In other words, Keeper is doing everything technically possible to let you store your passkeys in its vault.

Keeper: Security

Security is first and foremost at Keeper. First of all, it’s a zero-knowledge company that undergoes regular SOC 2 and ISO 27001 auditing. It also meets US and EU directives on data protection. Encryption is done on the fly and at device level, with AES 256-bit and PBKDF2 encryption, so no readable information is ever kept on Keeper’s servers.

Admins have full control over which users can access what information and for how long, so there’s no risk of an employee keeping any information after leaving your company, while BreachWatch continuously watches for leaked passwords, and a secure file storage system helps keep your most sensitive documents safe.

Keeper: Support

Keeper comes with great support for businesses. Not only can you benefit from onboarding and training for the whole team, but the support center features a very rich knowledge base with plenty of videos and articles that balance depth and accessibility.

Chat support is available 24/7, which is great for businesses, while phone support is available 10AM–5PM CST. We were a little confused by the online chat, which didn’t tell us if we’d been connected to somebody or how long we might have to wait, although somebody did get back to us within two minutes.

Personal users don’t get the same support as the business clientele. There is no direct phone number, nor an email, but rather they need to go through the support portal. They still have access to all the articles and videos on the self-support side, such as step-by-step guides for installing Keeper on each web browser and supported platform.

Keeper: The competition

There are a number of good password managers out there for businesses. Dashlane has a similar business offering, but includes dark web monitoring at a cheaper price than Keeper Business and its BreachWatch. This is a good solution if you don’t need Keeper’s advanced user management. Alternatively, LastPass includes support for Opera and doesn’t make you pay extra for secure file storage. 

Then, there are the do-it-alls. If you’re already using Zoho for its other online collaboration tools , then you may want to stick to having everything under the same roof and opt for Zoho Vault.

Keeper: Final verdict

Keeper offers industry-leading security with a simple interface that both end-users and IT managers will find easy and enjoyable to use. Pricing is broadly in line with industry standards, although additional features like BreachWatch and onboarding can significantly increase the yearly invoice. Nonetheless, for managing passwords and sensitive information across various teams and roles, Keeper is hard to beat. That, coupled with its clear ambition to stay with the trends (as is the case with passkeys) makes it a solid choice for any type of consumer.

Keeper's password manager comes with strong security features and a simple, consistent user experience no matter which platform or device you're using, making it a solid choice among better-known competitors such as 1Password , LastPass and the higher-priced Dashlane .  

While Keeper's free tier won't be useful for most people because it's limited to just one mobile device, its premium individual plan (Keeper Unlimited) is competitively priced at $35 per year. Keeper also lets you buy individual add-on features such as online storage and dark-web monitoring.  

One long-standing downside to Keeper had been a lack of built-in templates for various document types — it offered only basic identity forms. However, 20 new templates were rolled out just before this review was published, bringing Keeper in line with others of the best password managers .

Keeper: Costs and what's covered

Keeper offers two pricing tiers for personal premium plans, and two for families. Keeper Unlimited costs $34.99 per year for an individual, while the basic Keeper Family plan costs $74.99 per year. (For the moment, Tom's Guide readers can get 40% off either plan.)

For the Plus Bundle — which adds dark-web monitoring to the basic features — you'll pay a total of $58.47 annually for an individual and $103.48 for a family.  

Keeper does have a very basic free version, which limits you to password, identity and payment-method storage, as well as a password generator and two-factor authentication (2FA), on a single mobile device. 

However, since Bitwarden and Myki offer completely free unlimited syncing, and other competitors have more flexible no-cost tiers, this free Keeper plan has little value.   

If you pay $34.99 for a year of Keeper Unlimited, however, you get unlimited password, identity and payment method storage across an unlimited number of devices. 

This tier also comes with secure storage for up to five files, file-sharing capabilities, emergency access and phone support. Keeper offers a 30-day free trial for its premium tier so you can test out its features before committing.  

The Keeper Family plan ($74.99 per year) is similar to Keeper Unlimited but allows up to five separate password vaults and 10GB of secure file storage.  

Keeper also has a combined plan, called the Plus Bundle, which simply adds its BreachWatch dark-web monitoring service plus more storage to the unlimited and family tiers for a total of $58.47 and $103.48 per year, respectively. 

You can also purchase BreachWatch ($19.99 per year), expanded storage (starting at $9.99 per year) and priority support ($99 per year) as separate add-ons to your selected plan.  

Keeper supports Windows 7, 8 and 10; the most recent two versions of macOS; and some common distributions of Linux, including Fedora, Red Hat, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu and Mint. 

There are browser extensions (known as KeeperFill) for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge . Mobile apps are available for both iOS (11.4 or later) and Android (6.0 and up). You can also access your vault through the Keeper website.  

For this review, I tested Keeper on a 2020 MacBook Air running macOS 10.15.7 Catalina and an iPhone XR. I used Google Chrome for browser testing. 

Keeper: Setup 

To get started with Keeper, you'll need to create an account with your email address and a strong master password. Keeper will also prompt you to set up a security question for account recovery — we'll go into more detail on this below.  

Note that if you skip the security-question step, you'll continue to see prompts for it when you open your vault on any device. You can always reset the question in your account settings. 

Once you're logged in, Keeper has step-by-step onboarding pop-ups to guide you through the setup process, including for creating or importing logins, installing the browser extensions and enabling two-factor authentication. You can skip any of these steps and come back to them later. 

To populate your vault, you can either create individual records or go to Settings > Import to choose from a long list of supported browsers and password managers, or to upload a CSV file. Each option has in-app instructions for exporting from the original platform. 

You'll also want to install the browser extension, called KeeperFill, which allows you to autofill logins and payment methods online and quickly create and save new logins. 

Next, download the desktop and mobile apps for your platform(s). You can use Keeper without the desktop app, which looks and functions very similarly to the web vault. 

However, the desktop version allows biometric logins and comes with KeeperFill for Apps (on macOS and Windows), which pops out a desktop version of the extension that you can keep open and move around your screen for easier (and constant) access to your vault. 

Keeper requires an extra layer of verification, such as an emailed code or a push notification, when you log into the mobile app for the first time on a new device before you're allowed to attempt a master password. 

Once you approve the device, you can log into your vault, which syncs automatically from the web or desktop. You can then enable biometrics, such as Face ID, in your app settings for faster access. 

If you're newer to password management, you'll likely appreciate Keeper's onboarding process and online-support articles, which are detailed and easy to follow. 

Keeper: Desktop

You can use Keeper as a web-vault and browser-extension combo, or you can add the desktop app. The interface and functionality are very similar between the web vault and desktop app: There's a collapsible left-justified menu bar where you can toggle between your main vault, identities and payments, security monitoring tools and deleted items. The vault will display your items in a list or as a visually appealing grid with website logos.  

Manually creating a new record is simple. The default record type has fields for a title, username, password and web address. The dice icon next to the password field autofills using Keeper's password generator. You can also add custom fields, files and two-factor authentication codes to individual records.  

At the time that we were testing Keeper for this review, the password manager had no templates or record types for identity documents, such as passports and driver's licenses, and the only way to create them was to use custom fields. 

But in January 2022, Keeper added more than a dozen new templates for payment cards, bank accounts, passports and other common record types. Each template can be further customized with additional fields.

Back in your main vault, hover your mouse cursor over a record to launch the website in your browser. Click the record to view the details or tap the three dots in the upper-right corner to edit, share, favorite, duplicate or delete the record or view its history.

Sharing an item is easy. Simply enter the email address of another Keeper user and select the permission level. You can see anyone you've shared a record with here too. 

Tap the drop-down arrow next to your email address in the upper-right corner to pull up your account information (including emergency access settings) or your vault settings, which is where you'll find import/export, customization tools and security options.

Emergency Access gives up to five people you designate, who must have Keeper accounts, access to your vault after a specified period of inactivity on your part, ranging from immediately to up to 3 months. 

Vault settings, meanwhile, allow you to enable biometric access such as Touch ID and Windows Hello (desktop app only), as well as two-factor authentication and a self-destruct function that deletes locally stored files after five failed password attempts. 

The Security Audit tool shows you your weak and reused passwords and gives you color-coded strength scores. You can launch websites directly from individual records to change passwords. 

BreachWatch scans for credentials that may have been compromised in data breaches. Again, you can open the record and launch the website from within this report.

Another reason to consider the desktop app is access to offline mode, which makes an encrypted copy of your vault available on your local device, secured behind your master password or biometrics. This feature is also available on mobile and is helpful for app autofilling if you're without Wi-Fi. You can toggle this on and off on the bottom toolbar in the app. 

The KeeperFill browser extension does all the key things like auto-filling, credential-saving and password generation. The auto-submit option is a nice feature: Keeper will autofill and then actually submit matched credentials to log you in.

You can search your vault for specific items, though you can't view a complete list in the extension (tapping Vault will redirect you to the web vault). It's easy to select from multiple accounts that exist on a single website and to create a new record with a generated password. Keeper will detect updated credentials and ask if you want to save them in your existing records. 

To access the extension, you can tap the Keeper icon in the form field. This sometimes didn't appear for me, so other options include a keyboard shortcut (command+shift+k on macOS or alt+k on Windows) or a right-click on the credential field. The former opens the main extension, the latter a pop-up menu where you can select an action. 

Keeper: Mobile apps 

The Keeper mobile app is fully functional and more streamlined than previous versions. The bottom toolbar lets you navigate between your main vault list, BreachWatch, app settings and your account information. 

The plus button lets you quickly create new records, folders and payment methods or upload a file. You cannot mass-import passwords on the mobile app — Keeper will redirect you to the web.  

Toggle open the More menu in the upper-left corner to view navigation options similar to what's available on the desktop app and web vault. This is where you'll find the Security Audit and your identity/payments list, as well as your favorites, shared items, files, trash and two-factor codes. 

When you create a record on mobile, you have the added option to scan in a photo or document, which Keeper will translate to plain text and attach to the Notes section. 

To enable Keeper's autofill function, available on both iOS and Android, go to your phone settings and select Keeper as your default. Tapping the Password (iOS) or Sign into Keeper (Android) button above your keyboard when entering credentials will open KeeperFill, and you can select, search or create a new record and tap Fill. 

Keeper may also detect and offer an existing login from your keyboard options. In my testing, this only worked in apps, not in the mobile browser. Also note that Keeper didn't always detect email-address fields as stored credentials, which meant I had to know or look up which email address I'd used in order to move on to the password screen. 

One helpful customization: You can launch a website from individual records in Keeper and set the default mobile browser you prefer each website to open in. 

Keeper: Security

Like many password managers, Keeper uses AES-256 encryption to secure data on its servers as well as your devices. Your information is unencrypted locally on your device only when you enter your master password, so neither Keeper employees nor hackers can access it.  

Keeper is also SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, which means it's trusted by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) to manage consumer data. The platform is also subject to regular security audits.  

Both free and paid Keeper users can set up two-factor authentication to access their password vaults. Keeper supports time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) sent via SMS (not recommended if you can help it) as well as apps like Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator and hardware security keys like YubiKey and Google Titan. An Apple Watch or Android Wear device can also be used for 2FA via the KeeperDNA app.  

After you enter your master password and any enabled 2FA method, you can unlock your Keeper vault using biometrics: Face ID on iOS, Touch ID on iOS and macOS, fingerprint and face unlock on Android and Windows Hello. 

Keeper does offer an account recovery option if you lose your master password. It's enabled by default on new accounts, and it requires you to set up a security question when you create your account.

You get to create the security question instead of being limited to pre-filled options, but keep in mind that using a question that someone else knows the answer to is a security risk. If you answer the question correctly, you'll get a verification code sent to your email address, which will then prompt you to reset your master password. 

Keeper password manager review: Bottom line

If you're willing to pay for a password manager, Keeper deserves serious consideration. The design is simple, consistent and easy to navigate across all major platforms and devices, and Keeper matches most of the features of similarly priced competitors.  

We're also fans of Keeper's security measures and its mix-and-match add-on options like extra storage and dark-web monitoring. Now that more identity-form templates have been rolled out, Keeper is one of the top premium password managers on the market.   

If you're looking for a free option, though, Keeper isn't it. Its one-device limit (mobile only) is surpassed by more flexible no-cost plans from LastPass and NordPass as well as by Bitwarden 's free tier.

• teachlit I purchased Keeper two days ago. It has taken me both days to get Keeper to change the passwords on two of my supplier sites. One site, AliExpress, could not be done by Keeper. Keeper email help was unable to do anything more than quote what was on the frequently asked questions. Keeper then lost the password for my second supplier. Don't waste your money, folks. Buy a notebook and stored your passwords in a locked safe. They will work a lot better that way. Reply

How can I import my passwords to Keeper?

To import your passwords to Keeper, you have several options:

Import from Web Browsers: You can import passwords from your web browser, such as Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and more. To do this, you need to install the Keeper Import Tool. From the Account Dropdown Menu in Keeper, click Settings > Import > Import. Follow the instructions to download and install the Keeper Import Tool. Once installed, you can import passwords directly from your web browser. Learn more

Import from Other Password Managers: Keeper can import logins and passwords from other password managers. From the Account Dropdown Menu, click Settings > Import. Choose the password manager you want to import from and follow the instructions provided. You may need to create an export file from your current password manager and then drag and drop it into Keeper.

Import from a Text File: If you have your passwords stored in a text file (.csv), you can import them into Keeper. From the Account Dropdown Menu, click Settings > Import. Drag and drop the file into the "Drop a File Here" window. Customize the import information organization if needed, and click Import to import the passwords into Keeper.

Pro Tip: Install our Desktop App for an optimized import experience. If you have many records saved in your browser, we highly recommend exporting to a .csv file and removing unnessary records before the data import. 2. Monitor the activity of privileged accounts

To protect privileged accounts, organizations need to adopt password security best practices. Cybercriminals will try to use password-related attacks such as brute force to crack the login credentials of privileged accounts. Organizations need to secure privileged accounts with strong and unique passwords . Strong passwords that are both long and complex make it difficult for cybercriminals to guess or crack them. Each privileged account should have a unique password to prevent multiple accounts from getting compromised through credential stuffing .

7. Regularly audit privileges

By regularly auditing privileges with a PAM solution, organizations can check to see if users have the necessary privileges they need to do their jobs and remove any privileges they don’t need anymore.
