Deseret News archives: Utahns have always had a fascination with Thor Heyerdahl, Kon-Tiki voyage

A look back at local, national and world events through Deseret News archives.

As a child growing up in northern Utah in the 1970s, my father helped broaden my world with stories of famous baseball players, camping in the great outdoors ... and Thor Heyerdahl.

The tale of Heyerdahl, the Norwegian adventurer who crossed the Pacific on a balsa log raft and detailed his harrowing 101-day voyage in the book “Kon-Tiki,” continues to intrigue us.

On April 28, 1947, a six-man expedition set out from Peru aboard a balsa wood raft named the Kon-Tiki on a 101-day journey across the Pacific Ocean to the Polynesian Islands.

Utahns have had a fascination with Heyerdahl, as evidenced by the many articles through the years in the Deseret News archives.

Perhaps it is because the Book of Mormon, a sacred text for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, details sea voyages by early cultures in history.

One former BYU professor said the Norwegian’s famous drift voyages proved that similar travel recounted in the Book of Mormon is possible.

The late Paul R. Cheesman , a BYU professor emeritus, attended the Explorers Club Conference in New York on April 8, 1989, where Heyerdahl was the keynote speaker. “Cheesman said the conference gave him the chance to renew a 20-year association with Heyerdahl,” per the article .

Heyerdahl’s belief was that “ancient mariners could have settled Polynesia,” and he was able to replicate the feat. He later traveled in the reed boats Ra, Ra II and Tigris , to test his theory that civilizations were spread by ancient mariners.

Heyerdahl’s books describing his voyages captured the world’s imagination. His film of the 101-day, 4,300-mile Kon-Tiki voyage won an Academy Award in 1951.

Heyerdahl was a hero in his homeland, per his 2002 obituary. A Deseret News editorial following his death hailed the explorer who had “the courage and the curiosity to venture out and shake things up a bit.”

“History books are filled with the adventures of ancient people who wanted to examine the other side of the mountain, the ends of the ocean, or, for that matter, the moon,” the editorial said. “Why should ancient people have been any different?”

One last note: A ride at Utah’s popular Lagoon resort in Davis County has a ride named Kontiki , crafted and decorated similar to Heyerdahl’s boat. It was added to Kiddieland in 2004, according to the LagoonHistory.com website.

In 1945, fascist leader Benito Mussolini, his mistress and several of his friends were executed by Italian partisans .

In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl and five crew members began a trip from Peru to Polynesia on the Kon-Tiki, a raft made of balsa logs and other natural materials. The voyage covered 4,300 miles over 101 days.

In 1955, the Public Health Service urged parents to move swiftly in having their children vaccinated for polio .

In 1975, North Vietnamese forces advanced to the outskirts of Saigon in the Vietnam War. Two days later, South Vietnam surrendered.

In 1988, an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 lost an 18-foot section of its roof at 24,000 feet between Hilo, Hawaii, and Honolulu, killing a flight attendant. The pilot landed on Maui with the remaining 94 passengers and crew members, 61 of them injured.

In 1994, former CIA officer Aldrich Ames pleaded guilty to spying for the Soviet Union. He was sentenced to life in prison.

In 1995, an underground gas explosion at a subway construction site killed about 100 people in Taegu, South Korea.

In 1996, a rampage by a gunman in Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia, killed 35 people .

In 2001, California businessman Dennis Tito became the first tourist in space . He reportedly paid Russia's space agency $20 million to give him a ride to the International Space Station.

In 2005, a Shiite-led Cabinet was approved by Iraq's National Assembly for its first freely elected government .

In 2009, three Albanian immigrant brothers were sentenced to life in prison for their part in a plot to attack soldiers at Fort Dix.

Boravak norveškog istraživača T. Heyerdahla na otočiću Fatuhivi u Francuskoj Polineziji 1937. godine je značajno utjecao na njegovo razmišljanje o tome kako su zapravo naseljeni svi ti brojni polinezijski otoci. Jednom je prilokom, sjedeći na obali sa svojom ženom, primijetio je kako istočnu stranu otoka u znatnijoj mjeri pogađaju neprekidni nizovi valova kojih nema na zapadnoj obali. Valovi su, tjerani stalnim istočnim, pasatnim vjetrom, u pravilnim razmacima zapljuskivali obalu. Starac Tei Tetua, jedini preživjeli član izumrlog plemena s istočne obale Futuhive, ispričao im je priče o sinu Sunca Tikiju, bogu i poglavici, koji je doveo čitav narod na polinezijske otoke iz velike zemlje s druge strane mora. Čuvši legendarne priče o Tikiju i sam Heyerdahl se prisjetio kako golemi kameni kipovi sliče na monolite, odnosno ostatke izumrle civilizacije u Južnoj Americi (Heyerdahl, 2005). Proučavajući povijest i mitologiju tih polinezijskih otoka, Heyerdahl je uočio kako nije moglo proći jako puno vremena od dolaska tih naroda na otoke, jer osamljena plemena govore različitim narječjima istog jezika. Kako su učeni ljudi na tim otocima znali nabrojati poglavice od vremena kad su otoci naseljeni, Heyerdahl je zamijetio kako se na raznim otocima rodoslovlja podudaraju i po imenu i po broju pokoljenja. Na temelju rodoslovlja, on razvio je etnološku teoriju da su južni dio Tihog oceana naseljavali ljudi s američkog kontinenta u dva vala. Prvi val naseljenika je došao na splavovima oko 500. godine iz Perua od kuda su ih nosile struje Tihog oceana, dok je drugi val bio oko 1100. godine iz udaljene Britanske Kolumbije preko Havaja (Klein, 2018). U Peruu je živio nepoznat narod koji je imao jednu od najneobičnijih kultura i koji je za sobom ostavio divovske kamene kipove sličnim ljudskim bićima i divovske piramide, ali je isti zauvijek nestao s tih prostora. Dolaskom prvih Španjolaca u Peru, tadašnji žitelji iz plemena Inka su im pričali kako su mnoge spomenike podigli bijeli bogovi, bijeli ljudi koji su tu živjeli prije njih i koji su ih podučili građevinarstvu i poljodjelstvu prije nego što su zauvijek iščezli i zaputili se preko Tihog oceana na zapad. Kada su prvi Europljani došli na polinezijske otoke, zatekli su dio stanovnika koji ima gotovo bijelu kožu, obrađena polja i sela s hramovima i kolibama, kao i popločane putove, isklesane kamene kipove, pa čak i stare piramide (Heyerdhal, 2005). Nazivali su se Urukehu i tvrdili da su potomci prvih poglavica tih otoka, pravih bijelih bogova , od kojih je jedan bio i sam Tiki. Nastavivši proučavati mitologiju, Heyerdahl (2005) je smatrao kako je u Peruu Kon-Tiki bio vrhovni svećenik i bog Sunca koji je ostavio divovske ruševine na obali jezera Tikitaka, a koji je zajedno s najbližim prijateljima morao pobjeći pred napadom ljudi iz dolina Coquimba. Heyerdahl (2005) je smatrao da je upravo taj Kon-Tiki osnovao brojne zajednice na polinezijskim otocima. Kako je njegovo pleme bilo miroljubivo, sjeverozapadni Indijanci, koji kanuima došli preko Havaja iz Britanske Kolumbije su se s njima pomiješali. No, usprkos tomu što je Heyerdahl otkrio povezanost i uočio određena poklapanja između povijesti i mitologije polinezijskih naroda s onom u Peruu, ostalo je otvoreno pitanje na koje nije mogao dati odgovor protivnicima svoje teorije. Većina antropologa ih je s podsmjehom odbacivala jer je udaljenost od Perua do tih otoka iznosila gotovo 7.000 kilometara (Encyclopædia Britannica, n.d.), a ti narodi nisu poznavali čamce, već samo splavi. Jedan od vodećih protivnika ove teorije, Herbert Spinden mu je rekao: ,,Probajte vi ploviti na običnoj splavi napravljenoj od balzovih greda iz Perua do otočja južnog Tihog oceana i vidjet ćete dokle ćete stići“ (McKay, 2019). Kako Heyerdahl nije znao što odgovoriti na ovakvu rečenicu, u sebi se odlučio na nezamisliv pothvat – izgraditi drevnu splav s kojom će se zaputiti od Perua do polinezijskog otočja i tako dokazati svoju teoriju.

Okupljanje posade, izgradnja splavi i putovanje

Brojni poznanici su Heyerdahla odgovarali od njegovog nauma zbog brojnih opasnosti. Naime, ako su ti narodi zaista i putovali na splavima od Perua do Polinezije, osim što su imali veliko iskustvo izgradnje od tradicionalnih materijala, pretpostavlja se da su na pučinu išle čitave flote takvih splavi pa su si mogli pomagati. S obzirom da je Heyerdahl planirao putovanje s jednom splavi, u slučaju bilo kakve nezgode, davane su im vrlo male šanse za spašavanje. Usprkos svim opasnostima, on je okupio posadu koju je činilo pet Norvežana (Herman Watzinger, Erik Hesselberg, Knut Haugland, Torstein Raaby i inicijator Thor Heyerdahl) i jedan Šveđanin (Bengt Danielsson; slika 1) (McKay, 2019).

Za izgradnju splavi su bile potrebne čitave grede balzovine koje je bilo teško nabaviti. Stoga su morali putovati u unutrašnjost Ekvadora, u srce prašume, a zatim ih transportirati do Perua. Splav je izgrađena u luci Callao. Nakon što su je opremili sa zalihama hrane i vode, putovanje je moglo započeti. Splav su nazvali Kon-Tiki (slika 2).

Dana 28. travnja 1947. godine posada je isplovila iz peruanske luke Callao. Splav je iz zaljeva na pučinu teglio tegljač peruanske ratne mornarice. Posada se na otvorenom moru mogla pouzdati u sreću, vještine, Humboldtovu struju i pasatni vjetar. Posada je imala radio koji je korišten za svakodnevna meteorološka i oceanografska promatranja. Uz radio i anemometar, sekstant (sprava za određivanja položaja na temelju izmjere visine nebeskih tijela) je bio najvažniji instrument.

Prvi dani putovanja su bili iznimno teški, a najveći problem je bilo kormilarenje. Iako je splav napravljena točno onako kako su je Španjolci opisivali, nije bilo nikog tko bi ih mogao naučiti kako se plovidbi. Kada bi puhao jak jugoistočnjak, splav su morali držati u kursu kako bi vjetar napuhnuo jedro s krme. Kada bi se splav okrenula previše u vjetar, jedro bi se samo okrenulo i lupalo o bambusovu kućicu, teret i ljude (Heyerdahl, 2005).

Tijekom plovidbe su po sve dubljim dolinama valova prepoznali da se nalaze u najbržoj matrici Humboldtove struje. Takve valove je, uz struju, izazivao i pasatni vjetar. Ishod plovidbe ovisio je i o svojstvima balzovih greda (s obzirom da nisu trajne, iako odlično plutaju) i o konopcima kojima su te grede bile pričvršćene. Većina pomoraca je smatrala kako takva splav neće izdržati duže od dva tjedna na otvorenom moru, upravo zbog konopa koji su im u prvim tjednima plovidbe zadavali najveće brige. Kako se čitava splav pomicala pod utjecajem valova, tako se i svih devet balvana međusobno pomicalo i izazivalo jako trenje, što je moglo znatno istrošiti konope. No, konopi su se vremenom u vodi malo naduli i napeli, te su držali balvane mnogo čvršće.

Osim što su sa sobom ponijeli velike količine iz Perua, posada se za hranu nije morala brinuti zbog toga što su svakog jutra na palubi pronašli dovoljno riba koje su preko noći uskočile na splav. Školjke i morske alge koje su rasle na donjoj strani splavi su mamile tune, srdele, dupine, ali i morske pse. Putujući beskrajnim prostranstvima Tihog oceana (slika 3), članovi ekspedicije su svakodnevno viđali brojne druge morske životinje, a najuzbudljivije im je bilo noću kada su mnoge od njih svijetlile i izgledale kao kakve utvare (Heyerdahl, 2005).

Dani na splavi su prolazili i nakon što je posada tri mjeseca slušala samo zvuk vjetra, valova i škripanje konopa, 93. dana putovanja su uočili palme na horizontu i čuli glasanje ptica. Zbog jakih vjetrova i struje, nisu pristali na taj prvi otok na koji su tijekom plovidbe naišli. Tjedan dana kasnije, u zoru 07. kolovoza malo prije 6 sati ujutro, uočili su niz koraljnih otočića koji će se kasnije pokazati kao posljednja stanica ekspedicije. Otočići su se pružali čitavim obzorjem i bilo ih je nemoguće zaobići. Brodolom je krenuo oko 10 sati kada su se valovi visoki i po devet metara obrušili na splav. Kon-Tiki se naposljetku pretvorila u podrtinu. Nakon 101 dana provedenog na splavi, putovanje je završeno.

Splav je preplovila više od 6.900 kilometara do atola Raroia u otočju Tuamotu u Francuskoj Polineziji. Unatoč ovom nevjerojatnom postignuću, zbog brojnih drugih dokaza još uvijek je uvriježeno mišljenje kako je migracija na polinezijske otoke došla sa zapada: No ekspedicija Thora Heyerdahla i Kon-Tikija je pokazala kako je, unatoč brojnim preprekama, uz dovoljno vjere i hrabrosti moguće postići nevjerojatno velike stvari.

Kao najstarija država Starog kontinenta, Grčka predstavlja horizont evropske kulture i civilizacije.

Obale ove mediternske zemlje zapljuskuje nekoliko mora: Jonsko, Egejsko, Karpatsko, Ikarijsko, Trakijsko, Mirtinsko, Kritsko, Libijsko.

Svake godine  Grčku i njena  ostrva sa prelepim plažama poseti nekoliko miliona turista iz celog sveta.

Grčka je država Evropske unije smeštena na krajnjem jugu Balkanskog poluostrva. Prirodne lepote i mediteranska klima, kao i neprocenjivo arheološko, istorijsko i spomeničko blago čine ovu zemlju jednom od najatraktivnijih turističkih destinacija.Postojbina je najstarijih civilizacija. Svetu je podarila  demokratiju, razvila i podstakla filozofiju. Kao najstarija država Starog kontinenta, Grčka predstavlja horizont evropske kulture i civilizacije.

U ovoj zemlji burne prošlosti i bogate istorije danas živi skoro 10 miliona stanovnika. Svaki drugi Grk živi u glavnom gradu Atini, jednoj od najlepših  prestonica sveta. Zemlja srdačnog, vedrog i gostoprimljivog naroda, ekološki je očuvana i zaštićena sredina.

U geografskom smislu smatra se i mediteranskom, odnosno sredozemnom državom. Njene obale zapljuskuje nekoliko mora: Jonsko, Egejsko, Karpatsko, Ikarijsko, Trakijsko, Mirtinsko, Kritsko, Libijsko. Ukupna dužina obalske linije Grčke je neverovatnih 15.000 kilometara.

Areheološki lokaliteti su neprocenjivo bogatstvo: svetilište boginje Atine na Akropoljskoj steni iz doba Periklove Atine, hram posvećen bogu mora Posejdonu na rtu Sunion, Stari Korint i Akrokorint, čuveno akustično pozorište u Epidaurusu, utvrđeni grad Mikena sa Lavljim vratima i Atrejevom riznicom, Apolonovo svetilište u Delfima,  antička Olimpija gde su 779. godine pre n. e. organizovane prvo Olimpijske igre, kraljevski grobovi u Vergini, ambijentalni prostor Svete Gore, čuvena palata u Knososu...

Svake godine Grčku i njena prelepa ostrva sa još lepšim plažama poseti nekoliko miliona turista koji osim u prirodnim lepotama uživaju i u nacionalnoj muzici, kuhinji, pićima i gostoprimstvu naroda čiji su pretci zadužili čovečanstvo.
