Liverpool pre-season 2024: New friendly confirmed for USA tour as date and location announced

Liverpool will be returning to the US this summer and another friendly has been announced too. The fixtures will be the first without Jürgen Klopp, who is leaving.

Liverpool has confirmed another pre-season friendly fixture in the USA this summer, with the Reds set to take on the Spanish outfit Real Betis in Pittsburgh. Under a new manager who will take over from Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool is set to head to the US for the first time in five years.

The US trip, which already included matches against Manchester United and Arsenal, was confirmed in February. The last time that Liverpool headed Stateside was the summer of 2019, just after the Reds had become European champions for the sixth time. Since then, a combination of Covid and then commercial opportunities in Asia have meant that they have not gone back until now.

In 2019, Liverpool played against Borussia Dortmund , Sevilla and Sporting CP in New York, Boston and Indiana. The Reds played on the west coast of the US during Klopp's first summer in charge back in 2016 with friendly fixtures against Chelsea , AC Milan and AS Roma.

This time, Liverpool was already confirmed to be playing Arsenal on Wednesday, July 31 in Philadelphia and then Manchester United in South Carolina on Saturday, August 3, meaning the Reds are staying on the east coast of the US. Now, the extra game has been penciled in for Friday, July 26.

The match against Real Betis will be staged at the Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. The new manager will also be able to use the time in the US to continue preparations for the new season on the training field.

"Adding Pittsburgh to our pre-season tour schedule is a great way to start our eagerly anticipated return to the USA," Ben Latty, the club's commercial director, said, via the official website . "We were delighted to quickly sell out our fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester United on this tour and are equally excited to be able to offer our supporters in the States another opportunity to see Liverpool FC play. Real Betis will come with a strong squad and it's going to be a great occasion in another iconic setting, in another fantastic US city."

"We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead," Latty said via the club's official website in February. "Pre-season tours always present exceptional opportunities for our supporters, the team and our official partners to engage in memorable experiences within a key focus market for the club."

The 2024/25 season in the Premier League will kick off on the weekend of August 17 and 18. The fixture list is usually published a few weeks after the prior campaign has come to a close. Liverpool will hope to begin life under a new head coach as league champion, with the Reds currently level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table with seven matches left to play.

Liverpool.com says: A return to the US will be big news for fans in America after so long without the chance to see the Reds on home soil. It will be a very different summer for Liverpool, of course, without Klopp in charge. There is also the impact of the European Championship in Germany to consider.

That tournament takes place from mid-June to mid-July so there is a good chance that a number of players involved in that will not be traveling to the US. They might need an extended break in what looks set to be another packed close season in which the majority of stars get very little in the way of a proper rest.

An original version of this article was first published on February 23. It has since been updated.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Everton host Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend. Here's everything you need to know to watch.

By Robert Wheeler | Apr 22, 2024

Fulham FC v Liverpool FC - Premier League

Mohamed Salah was dropped out of the starting lineup for Liverpool as they defeated Fulham 3-1 last weekend. Salah did come on as a substitute in the 74th minute but the Reds had already scored their three goals by then. On the scoresheet for Liverpool were Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota.

Jurgen Klopp said that Salah was dropped due to squad rotation. However, they may need him as they take on Everton in the Merseyside derby this week. Salah scored twice in a 2-0 win when the two sides met in the Premier League earlier in the season.

The Reds are currently level on points with the league-leaders Arsenal but only second on goal difference. However, Manchester City — who are third — have a game in hand and are still the favorites to win the division.

Everton have had mixed results recently — with two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five games. Last week they lost 6-0 to Chelsea on the Monday but bounced back from this with a 2-0 win over relegation rivals Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Sean Dyche's side are currently 16th in the division and five points above the drop zone. They will need a few more victories to ensure Premier League survival.

Jurgen Klopp thrills at return of normal service as Liverpool rediscover their composure

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp celebrates his side's victory in the Premier League match at Craven Cottage, London. Picture date: Sunday April 21, 2024. (Photo by Zac Goodwin/PA Images via Getty Images)

For the first time in two and a half weeks, Jurgen Klopp quickened his stride, twirled his right hand, took a little skip and punched the air three times to roars of acclaim.

The previous four dates on Klopp’s farewell tour had seen no call for his trademark celebration as his team’s ambitions suffered a series of jolts. But this time, he walked away happy and the fist pumps were back — a signal that Liverpool were back in their groove and still alive in this Premier League title race.

A 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage took Liverpool level with leaders Arsenal on 74 points, one clear of champions Manchester City who have a game in hand. The top two have the chance to extend that lead — Arsenal at home to Chelsea on Tuesday evening, Liverpool at Everton 24 hours later — before City play again at Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday.

“An interesting race,” Klopp called it afterwards. There were no bombastic statements from Klopp. He quietly spoke about needing to take care of business, “to try to win as many games somehow possible”, and hoping to get a little help from elsewhere.

For months, there has been a sense of drama around Klopp’s team: wild, chaotic matches, not least the two against Manchester United at Old Trafford (a 4-3 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-final and a 2-2 draw in the Premier League). But this was the type of controlled, composed Liverpool performance that has been a rarity of late. At this stage of the race, when tensions and nerves are heightened, composure is essential.

So is individual quality. Liverpool had not shown enough of that in recent weeks; far too many goalscoring opportunities have been squandered or snatched at.

And then up stepped Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 32nd minute against Fulham and curled a beautiful free kick beyond Bernd Leno ’s outstretched palm and inside the near post. It makes quite a difference when you have a player who can do that.

Opta measured Liverpool’s expected goals (xG) value for the entire game at precisely 1.00, by far their lowest in 17 matches in all competitions since the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in early February. But as Alexander-Arnold stood over that free kick, it felt as if everyone inside Craven Cottage knew exactly what was going to happen next. It was an expected goal of another type.

liverpool stadium tours

Alexander-Arnold was enjoying an excellent season before injury initially struck in January. In his absence, there were some superb contributions from his young deputy Conor Bradley , but Alexander-Arnold’s passing, crossing and (less frequently) shooting bring a different dimension to this Liverpool team.

“It’s super important,” Klopp said of his vice-captain’s return. “But, for example, one of the shooting stars of this season is Conor Bradley, who played the position and played in a few games where we all thought, ‘Oh wow. What was that?!’ But nobody is like Trent. Nobody is like Trent. The way we play with him can be different, so yes it’s super helpful and I’m really happy about that.”

Klopp was happy about many things. But essentially it boiled down to three: establishing control of the game, taking chances when in the ascendancy and maintaining control after that.

If Liverpool had done that over the previous weeks, they would be clear of Arsenal and Manchester City. In terms of all-round play, it would be hard to call this a better performance than that at Old Trafford a fortnight earlier. The difference was composure.

That composure went missing for a period before half-time as they offered Fulham a way back into the game — an invitation that Timothy Castagne accepted in first-half stoppage time.

It was a bad time to concede a goal, but half-time allowed Liverpool to regroup and refocus without further damage being done.

Whatever Klopp said at the interval, his players seemed more certain of themselves. Wataru Endo , Harvey Elliott , Ryan Gravenberch , Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota all had a greater say in the second period.

Gravenberch has been inconsistent since his arrival on Merseyside last September, showing both the qualities that earned him a move to Bayern Munich at the age of 20 and the weaknesses that led them to sell him a year later. But from the moment he restored Liverpool’s lead with an exquisite curling shot from the edge of the penalty area, picked out by Elliott, he seemed to grow in confidence and influence.

liverpool stadium tours

Klopp made a point about needing to use Liverpool’s squad strength, with this their seventh out of nine matches in 28 days since the last international break. The concern lately has been that too many players have either looked short of rhythm following a period on the sidelines or exhausted by too much football. Gravenberch and Gakpo haven’t always seized their opportunities when starting matches this season, but this time they did.

The other real beneficiary was Jota.

Unlike Alexander-Arnold, the forward’s stock seemed to rise in his absence due to the errant finishing of others, most notably Darwin Nunez . But on his first start in two months, Jota illustrated the combination of intelligence, ingenuity, sharp movement and confident finishing that makes him Liverpool’s most reliable centre-forward.

Jota had been lively for an hour but was just about to leave the pitch, as part of a triple change, when Gakpo sent him clear of the offside trap on 72 minutes. It was the type of opportunity Liverpool’s other forwards have missed far too often lately, but Jota took it confidently, his last act before making way for Nunez.

liverpool stadium tours

There has been a vulnerability about Liverpool in recent weeks — a feeling that, even when ahead, opponents can still sense a way back into the game. But on this occasion, Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah kept Fulham at arm’s length. From the moment Gravenberch made it 2-1, the outcome was never really in doubt.

Five games to go, then: Everton away, West Ham United away, Tottenham Hotspur home, Aston Villa away, Wolverhampton Wanderers home. How many more times will we see Klopp grinning from ear to ear and pumping his fists at the final whistle? Goodison Park on Wednesday? London Stadium on Saturday?

Win those two and the gloom that has gathered over Anfield over the last fortnight will give way to a surge of renewed belief.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Taylor Swift shocker: New album, "The Tortured Poets Department," is actually a double album

By Alex Sundby , Brian Dakss

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 10:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Anticipation was growing at a fever pitch before Taylor Swift's latest album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," dropped at midnight EDT. But the pop superstar had a huge surprise on tap: It's actually a double album.

When Part One dropped, Swift wrote on Instagram , "All's fair in love and poetry... New album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Out now 🤍"

Then came the shocker, revealed in an Instagram post saying , "It's a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. ✌️ I'd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here's the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn't mine anymore… it's all yours. 🤍."

What's Taylor Swift's new album about?

Swift described the album as "new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure."

She also said that time has been "closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted."

"Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Denny Directo called the record some of her most vulnerable work.

"Fans were left with more questions than there were answers, so good luck trying to decipher who these songs are about, what they mean," Directo told CBS News. "… I feel like there's more heartbreak songs on this than there are love songs."

Hours ahead of the record's release, Swift said on social media that its first single was "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone, and its music video was released Friday night .

Swift praised the Grammy-nominated artist's musical experimentation and melodies "that just stick in your head forever."

"I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight," Swift said in her post .

"Fortnight" isn't the only track on the album on which Swift worked with another artist. Florence and The Machine is also featured.

What's on "The Tortured Poets Department" tracklist?

Swift posted an initial tracklist to social media in February one day after she announced the album at  the Grammys , where she won for best pop vocal album. Here's the list of all 31 songs:

  • "Fortnight"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"
