Majestic Princess Itineraries

Majestic princess review, review of majestic princess.

The 2017-built Majestic Princess cruise ship is the 3rd Royal-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet, together with the fleet mates Royal Princess (2013), Regal Princess (2014), Sky Princess (2019), Enchanted Princess (2021) and Discovery Princess (2022). From the same class is also the P&O UK ship Britannia (2015).

The vessel (IMO number 9614141) is currently UK- flagged (MMSI 232002990) and registered in Southampton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Majestic Princess cruise ship

The 3560-passenger ship Majestic Princess is among the largest liners. The liner carries the Chinese name - Sheng Shigrave; Gong Zhu Hao on its hull, chosen by Carnival Corporation's Chinese employees. It is translated as “Grand World” (or “Grand Spirit”).

Signature features of sister-ships Regal and Royal include multiple dining venues; cantilevered SkyWalk; multi-story atrium; outdoor cinema Movies Under the Stars; adults-only Sanctuary complex. Tai Chi at sea, ballroom dancing, Chinese satellite TV channels and subtitled Hollywood movies are among the Chinese experiences of “Princess Class”, rolled out to the local cruise market.

Princess Cruises announced on February 8, 2016, on Chinese New Year, that its first cruise ship designed and built specifically for the China market, Majestic Princess (盛世公主号), is also the fleet's first vessel with the company's new livery design.

Also on February 8, 2016, the new ship reached a significant construction milestone when Majestic Princess “floated out” in its building dock at Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. The ship met the ocean for the first time and the occasion was marked by a traditional ceremony.

Majestic Princess was scheduled for delivery on April 4, 2017, in Civitavecchia-Rome . The ship (homeported in Shanghai China ) offers many of the same special features as Regal Princess and Royal Princess . Among those are a multistory atrium serving as a social hub; a top-deck glass-bottomed over-the-ocean SeaWalk (extending 28ft beyond the ship's edge), Princess Live! (interactive studio), Chef’s Table Lumiere (private dining room).

Majestic Princess has new venues created specifically for China's cruising market.

Decks and Cabins

Majestic Princess staterooms (1780 total, in 38 categories) include 350 Suites, 1088 Balcony and 342 Inside cabins, in 38 categories. The ship has no Oceanview cabins. Most outside accommodations (1438) have private step-out balconies. The ship also has 36 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The largest are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2 / 44 m2 plus 210 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

There are many for-fee dining options onboard Majestic Princess, but guests who would rather not pay are offered enough quality and variety to satisfy. Those who prefer tradition can choose between the three main dining rooms.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Lido restaurant)

World Fresh Marketplace is the buffet option, providing a more casual vibe. Passengers who want to have lunch in their swimsuits can take a burger from Trident Grill or a slice at Prego Pizzeria. Indoors, Alfredo's features delicious calzones, salads and thin-crust pizza.

Majestic Princess boasts two new restaurant concepts - "Harmony" and "La Mer" (Bistro Sur La Mer/in 2023 replaced with "The Catch by Rudi").

Harmony is a modern specialty restaurant with a sophisticated Chinese dinner menu by Michelin-star chef Richard Chen.

Itineraries

Majestic Princess itinerary program was initially based on year-round Asian cruises - from China to Japan and South Korea, with roundtrip departures from homeport Shanghai China .

Following the Coronavirus crisis in 2020, for season 2021-2022 Majestic Princess cruises along the US West Coast (California) and Mexico Riviera with 7-day roundtrip itineraries from homeport Los Angeles .

In 2018, the ship had scheduled two 14-day Grand Asia cruises between Shanghai and Singapore . Available to both Chinese and international cruise tourists, these 2018 itineraries visit South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan, including a late-night visit to Hong Kong . The first cruise departs Shanghai on February 25, the second departs Singapore on March 11.

During season 2018-2019 (September 2018 through March 2019), the ship was homeported in Sydney NSW Australia . This made it the ever-largest Princess vessel to operate on the Australia-New Zealand market. After the Australian deployment, the ship returned to China. During the inaugural Australian season, Majestic Princess had scheduled a total of 16 itineraries to South Pacific Island destinations (Fiji, NZ, Tasmania), plus 2 repositioning cruises - southbound (Shanghai to Sydney) and northbound (Sydney to Hong Kong).

In 2018 (April through July) the ship was homeported in Keelung Taiwan for 3-4-night roundtrips (short breaks and longer itineraries) to ports in Japan and China. Following the Taiwan-based program, the liner returned to Shanghai, and then was deployed in Australia (September 2018 through March 2019).

For winter season 2024-2025, the ship was slated to debut in the Caribbean (14-day roundtrips from Fort Lauderdale Florida USA /Jan-Feb 2025). Prior to the Caribbean deployment (Dec 2024-Jan 2025) were scheduled several voyages around South America - leaving from Los Angeles, visiting ports in Mexico, Panama, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and ending in Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale.

Majestic Princess Wiki

The vessel's powerplant includes four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 46F, 2x 12V and 2x 14V) with combined power output 62,4 MW (83,700 hp). The propulsion system is based on two azipods with combined power output 18 MW (24,000 hp).

The ship has Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6232, volume 144216 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 11277 tons, LOA length 330 m, beam 38 m (max width 47 m/including the Navigation Bridge's wings), max draught 8,6 m.

Fun facts: It takes 3 million man-hours to build a Royal-class liner. For its construction are used 37,000 tons of steel. For instance, about 12,000 tons of steel were used for constructing the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles . The paint used for the vessel is 95,000 gallons (360,000 L), which is two times more than the quantity consumed for Golden Gate Bridge (re-painted annually). The electrical cables wiring the whole vessel are long 2484 ml (4000 km) which is enough to link NYC with LA .

After Ovation of the Seas ( Royal Caribbean ), Majestic is the world's second cruise vessel specifically designed for Chinese passengers. It even has an alternative name in Mandarin - "Sheng Shigrave; Gong Zhu Hao" (meaning "Grand Spirit").

On July 10, 2015, was held vessel's keel-laying ceremony at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard . With the first keel block laid officially started the construction. The liner was delivered on March 29, 2017. The ceremony was attended by Micky Arison ( Carnival Corporation 's Chairman), Arnold Donald (Carnival Corporation's CEO), Stein Kruse ( Holland America 's CEO), Jan Swartz (Princess Cruises and Carnival Australia's President). Giampiero Massolo (Fincantieri's Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri's CEO). It was mentioned at the delivery ceremony that between 1990-2017, Fincantieri has built 77 cruise ships (of which 54 between 2002-2017), plus other 30 vessels under construction .

On November 3, 2016, the sistership's construction officially started with the steel cutting ceremony at Fincantieri's shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia . Fun fact is that in the period 1990-2016, Fincantieri constructed a total of 101 cruise ships.

On May 25, 2017, started the 37-day long relocation cruise from Europe to China (Civitavecchia-Rome to Shanghai via Suez Canal ). The voyage featured the cultural exchange program "Telling the Chinese Story along the Silk Road Sea Route". The repositioning cruise featured numerous themed onboard events and live performances, among which were the "Ansai Youth Waist Drum" and "Luochuan Youth Yangge Dance" teams, "China National Orchestra", "China National Opera And Dance Drama Theater". This absolutely unique onboard enrichment program was enjoyed all the way to China by the ship's lucky 6500+ passengers. Along the reposition itinerary, the ship called at a total of 22 "Silk Road" ports in Greece, Egypt, UAE, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China (Xiamen was the ever first Chinese cruise port visited), Taiwan, Japan, South Korea. For the list of ports of call see in the "inaugural cruise itineraries" tables that follow.

On July 9, 2017, in Shanghai China was held the vessel's christening ceremony lead by the Chinese godparents Yao Ming (Houston Rockets' basketball legend) and his wife - Ye Li. Yao Ming is an 8-time NBA All-Star with Houston Rockets and inductee into NBA Hall of Fame. The godfather-godmother couple established "The Yao Foundation" following the 2008 earthquake that devastated China's Sichuan Province. The organization built a total of 23 primary schools in the region and also extends sports education to the region's youth through basketball-related projects. The ship's naming ceremony was attended by Wang Hong (Baoshan District's party secretary and Shanghai International Cruise Business Institute's general director), Arnold Donald; (Carnival Corporation's President and CEO), Jan Swartz (Princess Cruises' and Carnival Australia's group president), as well as Chinese travel agent partners and Chinese media representatives.

Princess Cruises Royal-Class ship design

Majestic Princess' Asian itinerary program (from homeport Shanghai) started on July 11, 2017. In 2018, the liner had scheduled two 14-day "Grand Asia" itineraries between Shanghai and Singapore . Both cruises visit ports in Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, with longer port times. The first "Grand Asia" cruise departs from Shanghai on February 25, 2018. The 2nd "Grand Asia" voyage leaves from Singapore on March 11, 2018.

Managed by Costa Asia, Majestic Princess passengers of Chinese origin were able to use their Alipay accounts to pay for onboard services and products. The 2017-signed partnership between Carnival Corporation and Ant Financial Services Group (subsidiary of Alibaba/China's biggest online trading company) enables Chinese cruise passengers on all Carnival Corp ships in Asia to use the Alipay mobile payment platform for onboard services and products (shopping, tours/excursions, food, drinks, etc). These expenditures are added to the passenger's cabin folio, then cleared via his/her Alipay account on a nightly basis.

"Love Boat" cruise 2022

On November 4, 2021, was announced "The Love Boat"-themed cruise on Majestic Princess scheduled for 2022-Q1.

The 7-day roundtrip from Los Angeles/San Pedro (February 26 thru March 5) visits three Mexican Riviera ports - Puerto Vallarta , Mazatlan , Cabo San Lucas .

Hosted by Jill Whelan (1968-born American actress who played "Vicki Stubing"/Captain's daughter in the TV series), the voyage will also feature as special guests The Love Boat actors Cynthia Lauren Tewes ("Julie McCoy"/Cruise Director), Bernie Kopell ("Adam Bricker"/aka "Doc"/Cruise Ship Doctor), Fred Grandy ("Burl Smith"/aka "Gopher"/Reception Purser) and Ted Lange ("Isaac Washington"/aka "Isaac"/Bartender).

The voyage will be a tribute to Gavin MacLeod (1931-2021) who played "Captain Merrill Stubing" (in the series) and served as Princess Cruises' brand ambassador in the period 1986-2021.

Onboard special activities include:

  • Sailaway party, 1970s-themed Disco Party (on pool deck), vows renewal /group ceremony (on top-deck)
  • Q&A sessions, cast photos, trivia games, themed merchandise
  • Birthday celebration honoring Gavin MacLeod
  • "Love Boat" themed dining menus and cocktails
  • "The Love Boat" episodes (at the outdoor theater and on all cabin TVs)

Inaugural itineraries 2017

In October 2015 was officially announced, that the Princess Majestic ship would be deployed in Asia. After its launch in 2017, the ship operated a series of Spring 2017 Mediterranean cruises, then was repositioned from Europe to Asia via Suez Canal . The cruise ship was based in China for year-round roundtrip itineraries from homeport Shanghai, China . During summer the ship operates on roundtrip Australia-New Zealand and South Pacific Islands cruises from homeport Sydney AU , with Australia-Asia relocation cruises.

Majestic Princess cruise itineraries include ports in Japan (Yokohama, Nagasaki, Kobe) and South Korea (Busan) and Hong Kong (China). In January 2017, the vessel successfully completed sea trials off Italy's coast.

The "Inaugural Cruise" (maiden voyage) started on April 4, 2017. The 5-night Adriatic Sea itinerary left out of Venice to Civitavecchia-Rome. The ship operates on 7-, 14-, 21- and 28-night long Mediterranean Sea itineraries departing from the ports of Barcelona Spain, Piraeus (Athens) Greece and Rome Italy, before the relocation to Asia through Suez Canal.

  • April 4 ("Inaugural Cruise") - the 5-day Maiden Voyage is a round-trip out of Rome (port Civitavecchia) visiting Kotor (Montenegro) and Corfu (Greece).
  • The ship's 2017 cruises in Europe (between April 9 and May 14, 2017) were available for booking on December 3, 2015.
  • The other two largest Princess ships Royal and Regal were also deployed in Europe in 2017, respectively, in the Mediterranean Sea (Royal) and Baltic Sea (Regal).

Fun fact is that this Princess ship has a namesake - the 2013-launched "Majestic MAERSK". The vessel is among the world's largest container ships (capacity 18,340 containers) and operated by MAERSK Line.

The following tables show the ship's Inaugural cruise itineraries with call ports, port times and USD prices per person (based on double occupancy inside cabin).

Does anyone know what would be the expected time for the nightly shows on Majestic Princess cruise leaving Sydney this November?  Apparently Coral Princess shows are 8pm and 10pm nightly.... could I expect something similar?

Coral's theatre shows tonight are 6pm & 8pm. I expect this to be mainly the case on Majestic as well.

Something similar, but my advice is, having travelled on that class of ship, get there real early for a seat, 3600 pax and a 900 seat theatre dont fit, even with two shows, half the ship miss out happened to us on Royal Princess.

Not accounting for those that don't want to go anyway.

No, I have just been looking at some recent patter pics, and comparing them to some of my older ones. I am getting long in the tooth for 10pm theatre shows.

We have been on a Princess cruise where show times varied from one night to the next,  nothing consistent at all.

OzKiwiJJ

They can vary but usually only but about 15 minutes or so. On the bigger ships like Majestic they sometimes do three shows a night. Even so, get there early or you won't get a seat.

We are on Majestic for 11 nights in October, on the first cruise after she arrives from the US. The theatre shows are not our number 1 ambition, but I will keep note of what is on and the times.

When we were on Royal Princess in Europe - 2016, same class as Majestic. They ran an Abba Revival show, twice on one night. I kid you not, 1 hour before each show every seat was full and standing in the aisles and on the stairs.  To see the real the good production shows, getting there really early is a must.

Unfortunately on the long cruise we were on it was a bit of a lottery with first show times anywhere between 6 and 8pm.

SHADOW KISSED TRAVEL

Cruising is back – Aboard the Majestic Princess

It’s been a long ride to get back here but cruising is back in Australia. When P&O’s Pacific Explorer arrived in Sydney on 18 April 2022, the first cruise ship to return to Australia since March 2020, there was a lot of fanfare and excitement as the final barrier to open travel had fallen. Here in Perth, we had to wait until October 2022 to see the Coral Princess in Fremantle Harbour – while the fanfare wasn’t as impressive, there was still a buzz in the Fremantle area.

Getting ready for my own cruise aboard the Majestic Princess in November 2022, my excitement was palpable. The communication from Princess Cruises around what to expect and what was needed to check in, then around the reintroduction of mask-wearing onboard in response to COVID cases on previous cruises was comprehensive and timely. Getting back onboard a beautiful cruise ship was amazing. Apart from masks indoors, it didn’t feel like there were any restrictions, and nothing was missing. In this post, I’m going to go through a few things I experienced onboard the Majestic Princess on the 5-day Tasmania cruise from Sydney to get you excited for your next cruise!

All-in-all, it was amazing. Princess Cruises is a leader for a reason and their ships are beautiful, their crew are lovely and the destinations are amazing. The Majestic Princess was beautiful, very large, but beautiful. Cruising is a great holiday for relaxation – you unpack once and you travel while you sleep. There’s something for everyone, from babies to the elderly and are always a unique holiday. I had an amazing time onboard and I fully recommend a cruise with any cruise line but especially aboard a Princess Cruises ship.

Check in and boarding

I will admit the first part of check in was a little messy with everyone packed into the same lines with no respect for Captain’s Circle levels or boarding groups to pick up Medallions. Once we’d picked up the Medallions, it was much smoother. As an Elite member, we were able to head to the priority line for check in – we had to show a photo of our negative tests and vaccination certificates, as well as our boarding pass in the MedallionClas s app. Security was seamless as well. Walking along the gangway, excitement was building to actually board the ship and get going with our holiday!

If you’ve been on a Princess ship lately, you’ll know about their Medallions and MedallionClass app and features. I honestly loved this bit of tech, with touchless entry into our stateroom and super quick and easy ways to check in to places, when leaving the ship for shore days, ordering food and amenities, or checking times for shows or attractions.

Your Medallion is everything on the ship – your room key, ID, and money! You don’t need to carry anything around with you on the ship if you don’t want to – we had our phones with us for photos and communication but honestly if you don’t want anything you don’t need it. When they boast your Medallion allows you contactless entry into your stateroom, they weren’t lying. Walking down the hall you will notice your door handle lights up green as you near it, then you just need to turn the handle and you’re in – no holding a card to a reader or inserting a card or key. Easy, especially if you’re carrying food or drinks!

MedallionClass app

Princess Cruises’ new app, MedallionClass, is great and brings everything to your fingertips. Honestly it can be a little glitchy, on- and off-ship, but it was great to be able to get on-demand schedules of activities no matter where we were on the ship or check cocktail menus when there were no cocktail menus in the dining room and things like that. Other features of the app (that I didn’t use) include – being able to find your travel companions on the ship and ordering food, drinks and amenities to wherever you are located on the ship.

‘Physically distanced’ Muster

There have been changes to how the emergency safety muster that you must attend when you board. Back before the ‘vid’ you were instructed to attend a safety muster to learn about the safety procedures at a location on the ship that was allocated to you – this location will be where you go if there is an emergency. The safety muster presentation is now available to watch in your cabin when you arrive. You will find it on your in-room TV – the tech in the rooms and the Medallions will register that you’re in the cabin and watching the presentation. You will then need to attend your muster station you’re allocated and tap your Medallion to show you’ve visited and know where to go if there is an emergency. I find this way better – much more comfortable – and you’re able to do it as soon as you get on the ship instead of at a time set by the ship.

MedallionNet

Princess’s onboard Wi-Fi worked well enough. I didn’t use it for streaming or anything like that, just social media and browsing so it worked well enough for me. I bought the 4-device package but ended up not using our laptops so 2 devices were wasted. It also didn’t work on my travel partner’s phone, so we really only used one device – not especially cost effective. However, I have heard from others that it worked fine for them so it could have been our devices and a one-time thing. If you’re wanting to access the internet for any reason while you’re at sea, I would recommend getting a MedallionNet package as it’s really the only way to basically guarantee connection.

Accommodations

We stayed in an interior cabin on the 12th deck in a twin configuration. For an interior cabin, it was really spacious and had everything you could need. Two single beds, each with its own bedside table with lamp, desk, small bar fridge, considerable storage space and a well-appointed bathroom. The beds were comfortable enough (just like most hotel rooms). Be aware that the walls do vibrate from the ship’s engines but it’s not distracting, in fact it was kind of nice and felt a bit like a massage.

The entertainment options on the TV in the cabin were great! In addition to information about the cruise and the ship, they have ample destination and cultural documentaries, plus blockbuster movies and television shows! You’re definitely not lacking for entertainment at any time you’re onboard!

Food and beverage

Oh my gosh, the food! I’ve never been on a cruise where the food wasn’t absolutely incredible. Plus, almost everything is included in your cruise fare! All food (except specialty restaurants) and most beverages (unless you want speciality coffees or alcohol) are all included – great right?! This includes the literally all you can eat buffet! I did not personally eat at any specialty restaurants on this trip (it was only a short trip so not really enough time) but I did visit the buffet, known as the World Fresh Marketplace, and the Concerto Dining Room. Breakfast and lunch were eaten in the buffet and dinners were in the dining room. The buffet has cuisine themes each day – these will be laid out in your Princess Patter , the printed daily program that is delivered to your room each day.

My travel partner and myself usually have lactose free milk at home, but the ship did not have it. They had soy as an alternative but not actual lactose free milk so having a barista coffee was difficult for us, but my travel partner did have a soy chai latte and they said it tasted great. I had a couple of frappes – cookies and cream I think – and it was delicious (though made with real milk).

Cocktails – mmmm yum. While onboard we had the Dirty Banana, Bahama Mama, and Blue Hawaiian cocktails – all classified as frozen cocktails. All of them were amazing. Though the lack of straws onboard was a little frustrating, trying to drink a frozen cocktail or frappe with no straw is a little difficult, or a cocktail in a long glass with a short straw. Honestly though, everything we consumed was amazing.

Onboard entertainment and amenities

There’s always something happening onboard a Princess Cruises ship, you’ll never be bored. From dance classes and live musicians in the atrium, workshops and seminars, trivia and social groups, to large productions in the Princess Theatre. The Sail Away party was loads of fun as we left port. With the performers and other crew members singing and dancing welcoming everyone on board it was a really great time. We also got up and had a dance on the middle stage with everyone! Onboard the Majestic Princess for this cruise there were two major productions. Encore was a beautiful production that celebrated popular opera with some incredible vocals from the performers and of course some of most gorgeous dresses I’ve seen on a stage. This was performed on the formal night, so it was really great going into the theatre in our formal wear to watch an opera show. The second major production was Fantastic Journey – a concert of chart toppers and amazing costumes. Both shows were thoroughly enjoyable and felt like we were at the theatre.

Lotus Spa and the Enclave

If you’re looking for pure relaxation, you need to try the Enclave. While I didn’t sample any of the other offerings from the Lotus Spa, we had a 5-day cruise pass for the Enclave, Majestic Princess ’s relaxation area within the spa area. Inside the Enclave, you will find heated stone loungers, a great place to relax that also give you that healing warmth (there was 12 loungers in all); 3 saunas, 4 spa showers, and a hydrotherapy pool. Our cruise pass cost $123 each for 5-day unlimited access to the Enclave. We spent between 1-2 hours in there each day, absolute heaven.

There are 3 saunas, 1 dry and 2 steam rooms.

Laconia , a Roman-inspired dry chamber that reaches temperatures of 50-60C (122-140F) inside. Stone benches line the walls (I recommend having at least 1 towel to sit on!) with a few cold-water faucets in case you need to cool down while you’re in there. It is recommended to only spend 10 minutes inside. We were able to spend longer in here, the dry heat was much easier to stand than the wet heat in the steam rooms. Only stay in a sauna as long as you are able and don’t push beyond comfortable – heat can be damaging. This was my favourite of the 3 saunas.

Hamman is a Turkish-inspired steam room that reaches temperatures of 40-50C (104-122F) inside. Inside you’ll find an area much like the other sauna with benches and faucets, plus a black tiled bench (more like a ‘bed’) with a showerhead beside it, with twinkling lights overhead to simulate the night sky. Once again, bring a towel in to sit on… it gets hot! Also be aware that the condensation on the roof does drip down and feels a little like acid when it hits your skin. Again, it’s recommended to only spend 10 minutes inside – I only lasted a few minutes in here, breathing in steam is difficult. And finally,

Caldrium , a Roman-inspired steam room that reaches 40-50C (104-122F) inside. Individual circular seats are scattered throughout the room with three shower heads around the room with cold water if you need to cool down. Once again, 10 minutes is recommended in here – I lasted about a minute.

Spa showers

The Enclave features four standing spa showers that are great to rinse off after time in the pool or the saunas. They can all be switched between ‘normal’ showers and rain showers. The options are:

Tropical: hot at 37C (100F) with a pleasant aroma,

Cool Mist: cool at 20C (68F) it provides a nice refreshing mist,

Rain: warm at 32C (90F) and feels like standing in summer rain, and

Siberian: a refreshing cool cloud of mist then a 20C (68F) shower.

Hydrotherapy pool

The pool was amazing and my favourite part of the whole place. The water is heated, I’m not entirely sure of the temperature, and is only about 1 metre (3 feet) deep – I’m only 5’3” and I could comfortably walk throughout the pool. There is a large rain showerhead in the middle of the pool which was lovely to stand under, two high-pressure showerheads that give you a great massage. There is also 2 ‘vertical spa cages’ – probably the worst way to describe them, but there are two circular cages that you can sit in with spa bubbles that give you a great massage on different parts of your body depending how you sit or move in the chair. I liked to do some exercises in them, moving my legs up and down and doing pull ups. Finally, there was a lounger that spread across the whole back of the pool with massage spa bubbles underneath. It was a lovely place to relax and chill for a while, it’s where I spent most of my time.

Captain’s Circle perks and customer service

The crew are great in general. They’re all so helpful and lovely it’s difficult to find any faults if you’re looking for them (I was not). I cruised as an Elite Captain’s Circle member so there were a few perks that were available to me that I definitely sampled! Elite members are able to have a complimentary mini bar setup, canapes before dinner on formal nights, complimentary wine tasting and some discounts and things. The wine tasting was great, only attended by Elite members (invite only). I did have to follow up multiple times to get my mini-bar set up (meaning I only had a couple of days to drink it all so we didn’t get through it), and my canapes were late so we had to eat them fast before heading for dinner. Other than that, honestly everything was amazing and the people were so lovely!

Health and safety

Cruise ships have always been persistent with cleaning and washing hands etc, but it is definitely enhanced since the ‘vid’. Buffets were open, but you had to wash your hands before going in. Hand sanitiser was EVERYWHERE. Before our cruise, Princess Cruises reintroduced face masks indoors so there was also that precaution that kept us safe. We didn’t feel like there were any ‘restrictions’ and we got through without infection so I’m all for these precautions.

Prior to boarding, we were required to undertake a RAT within 24 hours prior to boarding (or a PCR test less than 72 hours prior) and be able to produce a photo of it at check in. We were also required to upload vaccination certificates to prove vaccination status. We’re fully vaccinated so we had no issues.

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

“It was very cool that there were four boats who could have won this thing in the last race...”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
