Visitor Guide to Waterloo

waterloo city tour

Getting There | What to See | Further Afield | Much Further Afield

The Battlefield of Waterloo is in southern Belgium and is about a 2 and a half hour drive from Calais (Chunnel or Ferry). Sat nav will almost certainly take you around the Brussels ring road. All I can say is don’t go there! From Calais take the route to Lille in France and then on to Waterloo. Lille at rush hour is congested but nothing like Brussels!

The battlefield is in better shape for a visit than it has been for decades with a new underground visitors centre opened in 2015.

The battlefield actually lies some three miles south of the town of Waterloo and decisions on how to get there and where to stay, can be very important for your enjoyment of the visit. This guide has been put together to help you make the right decisions for your specific needs.

Getting there

Being situated 23km from Brussels, and about 32km from Brussels International Airport, you have a number of options depending on how you have arrived and what mode of transport you wish to use.

For Satnav – Address for Battlefield is Route du Lion 315, Waterloo 1410, Belgium

Please note, that the Route du Lion is now permanently closed at the Lion Mound. Therefore it is best to approach towards the Battlefield Visitor Centre from the north west (from Braine l’Alleud) as the car park is on this side of the Lion Mound.

Having arrived at Brussels Airport at Zaventem, you can either pick up a hire car, take a taxi or train to Waterloo.

If taking a taxi, it will cost about E40 each way and will take about 30 minutes except at peak periods for traffic around Brussels, when it could take double the time and double the cost! A taxi for a group can be quite cost effective.

If by train, catch a train from the airport to Brussels Midi station. Here you can catch a train to Waterloo, which goes about ever hour for E5 each way, (if staying in the town) or Braine l’Alleud if preferred if simply going to the battlefield for the day.

It will cost about E10 to catch a taxi from either station to the Lion Mound. However, taxis are rarely to be found at the station, be prepared to walk or have the phone number of a local taxi company handy.

Trains from London and all other international trains normally alight at Brussels Midi, from which you an easily transfer to a local train going to Waterloo or Braine l’Alleud every hour for about E5 each way.

Catch the W Bus or the 365 Bus, both from Brussels. You can purchase a ticket off the driver.

What To See

The new battlefield visitor centre.

One of the best new museums at Waterloo is the fantastic new underground Visitor Centre adjacent to the Panorama. It is a thousand percent better than the old centre (for those that went there before 2015). The 3D film is actually pretty good and is highly recommended. You can view the only complete skeleton uncovered at Waterloo (named by yours truly as Private Friedrich Brandt 2nd Line Battalion King’s German Legion). Plenty to see and do for all ages.

Allow 1-2 Hours

Opening times

26th March to 30th September: 9:30AM to 6:30PM 1st October to 25th March: 10:00AM to 6:00PM Last entry 45 minutes before closing

Ticket Prices

Individual site tickets can be purchased, but it is highly recommended buying a group ticket PASS 1815 (all Inclusive) Covers Wellington Museum, Le Caillou, Visitor Centre, Panorama, Lion Mound, Hougoumont and Mont St Jean

Adults (over 17) E21 Children Under 17 E17

Please Note

When you visit the Visitor Centre and purchase tickets it comes in two parts. The white barcoded ticket allows you into the Centre, Panorama and up the Mound.  This part has to be used on the day of purchase.  You also receive a card which you show at the other locations to allow you access to Le Caillou,  Hougoumont, Mont St Jean and Wellington’s HQ.  You have up to one year to visit these locations.

Access to the Lion Mound and Panorama is now through the visitor centre and is included in the price of the ticket.

Those with limited mobility can enjoy full access to the Visitor Centre, but cannot see the Lion Mound or Panorama as this includes a number of steps.

Lion Mound

The mound was built between 1820 and 1825 to commemorate the victory, but it has always been controversial as it significantly altered the battlefield in its construction. It does however, offer excellent views over the battlefield on a good day, but does tend to make the battlefield appear flat, which is far from true. The climb should however, only be attempted by someone who is relatively fit, as it has 226 steep steps up to the viewing platform (there is no lift).

The Panorama

Painted in 1912 by Louis Dumoulin, it attempts to portray a 360 degree view of the great cavalry charges during the middle of the battle. Although it has seen some renovation, with sounds and smells, it is of minor interest, being of its time.

waterloo city tour

The Chateau/Farm Complex of Hougoumont was the scene of intense fighting throughout the day and was virtually its own battle within a battle. The farm is really worth the effort of visiting it, although unfortunately at present there is little actually on site to help the visitor understand its importance. A little bit of prior knowledge is therefore an advantage. Plans are apparently afoot to improve significantly this part of the visitor experience with large signs at significant points and improved displays in the entrance area. The farm/chateau complex has recently been fully refurbished and now includes a viewing platform, the wonderful new British Memorial and a slightly odd visual presentation in the Great Barn.

Allow 1 Hour

Opening Times 26/03 to 30/09 09.30 to 18.30 01/10 to 25/03 10.00 to 18.00 There is a free shuttle bus from the visitor centre to Hougoumont (and return) every half an hour for those who do not wish to make the twenty-five minute walk along the allied ridge line to get there. Those with Impaired Mobility can enjoy full access although the cobbled yard can be a bit of a challenge.

La Belle Alliance

For anybody who would like to rent a beautiful apartment on the actual battlefield for your visit, please take a look at the Landmark Trust Website.

La Belle Alliance

Although its name has made it famous, it is a nightclub and cannot be visited.

Plancenoit Village

There are a number of French and Prussian memorials at Plancenoit, but there are no museums here. The church which now dominates the village centre and the one that was a prominent part of the fighting here, are unfortunately not the same.

La Haye Sainte

La Haye Sainte

The farm of La Haye Sainte is privately owned and the family request that visitors respect their privacy.

Mont St Jean Farm

The farm was used as a major field hospital during the battle. It has recently been expertly renovated and now contains a museum on the medical aspects of the battle and a brewery for Waterloo Beer (it comes highly recommended by the author!) both of which can be visited.

Allow 30 Minutes

Mont St Jean Farm

Opening Times: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Prices Now Included in All Inclusive 1815 Ticket from the Battlefield Visitor Centre

If visited alone 7.5 Euros for Museum and additional 5 Euros for Brewery Tour including beer tasting (small). The Farm of Mont St Jean lies a few hundred metres north of the battlefield and has a carpark in its rear.

The Museum is to be found in the centre of Waterloo. It was an inn in 1815 and was used by the Duke of Wellington as his headquarters. The bed in which Colonel Gordon died is still in the house. The rear building is now used for special exhibitions and there are a number of gravestones in the garden.

St Joseph’s Chapel

Opening Hours The church is open to visitors during normal hours (outside times of services), free of charge. There are a very large number of memorials within.

It stands opposite Wellington’s Museum.

Allow 30 minutes

Le Caillou

1472 Vieux GenappeOpening Times 10 a.m. to 18.30 p.m.

Napoleon’s headquarters lies some 4 km south of the battlefield on the Genappe road. It has very limited parking. The small museum has recently been refurbished, but is now if possible a little too child friendly. Looking for the original artefacts? Turn the boards with images of soldiers around and there you have them. Press a button to view the French skeleton (actually a conglomeration of a number of different skeletons). In the garden there are a number of commemorative tablets and the Ossuary (a deposit for bones discovered on the battlefield).

Evere Cemetery

Allow 30 minutes Open Tues-Sun 08.30 – 16.30

In 1890 it was decided to have a major monument for the British dead who could be individually identified. Between 1890-4 a number of bodies interred around the Waterloo battlefield were moved here and placed in the crypt. 15 men are now buried here.

Army Museum Brussels

Allow 1 Hour Location Parc du Cinquantenaire 3, Brussels 1000 Open Tues- Sun 09.00 – 17.00 Price 5 Euros

The Museum of the Armed Forces covers the history of the Belgian forces throughout history, but it does have a decent section of artefacts from the period of Waterloo

Genappe Bridge

Genappe village lies about 8km south of Waterloo battlefield and can be reached by bus, but car is easier (there is a large carpark at the bottom of the valley near the bridge). There are no museums here and no major monuments, whilst the course of the river has been altered and the bridge is virtually hidden now. It is however, possible to still see how restrictive the road was for the cavalry as they passed through the main street.

Quatre Bras

The battlefield of Quatre Bras lies about 12km south of Waterloo battlefield. There is a bus service, but realistically you need to drive to Quatre Bras. There are no museums here, many of the farms such as Gemioncourt are private property or converted into golf clubs. The woods have been removed and buildings continue to spring up, slowly the battlefield is disappearing. The huge farm that stood on the junction of the crossroads for over two hundred years has been recently demolished. This battlefield is now only for the real die-hard.

There are a number of major memorials at the crossroads (turn fifty yards onto the Nivelles road), whilst the monument to the Duke of Brunswick stands a mile south of the crossroads.

Ligny

Ligny Battlefield

The battlefield of Ligny covers a very large area and is a serious walk, it is therefore much easier to visit the area by car. Sombreffe Church maintains a French cannonball embedded in a wall and Ligny has a few farmhouses and monuments from the period, but all of these farms are private property.

Museum Gerard

There is a small but very good museum at Ligny, housed in a farmhouse which was used as a hospital at the time of the battle.

Museum Address 5140 Ligny, Belgium Opening hours Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 1pm to 5pm. Prices 5 Euros per person (not included in the 1815 ticket)

Ballroom

This hidden gem, is rarely visited. It was the home of King Louis XVIII whilst in exile at Ghent during the Waterloo campaign. Visits are guided and excellent. The ballroom/reception room where the king met all of the officers of the British regiments marching to Brussels is truly magnificent. Highly recommended.

Where to stay?

Varying budgets and wants/needs mean that it is difficult to give a definitive list, but I mention here a few that I can personally recommend.

Martin’s Grand Hotel and Lodge

Chaussée de Tervuren 198, 1410 Waterloo, Belgium

The best hotel in the area, but also most expensive, is Martin’s Grand Hotel which is 4*, Rooms are good and the breakfast (full English) and other facilities, excellent. (Average price 140- 200 Euros per room per night including breakfast). The hotel provides free parking but is 3 miles from the battlefield. It is however, a very short walk from Waterloo town centre, its museums, restaurants and excellent shops.

If you can, book into the Lodge, a newer development which stands alongside the main Hotel. It provides 3* accommodation, hence cheaper (although the rooms are very well equipped), but you still get to enjoy breakfast and all other facilities of the main hotel included! (Average 100-160 Euros)

Route du Lion 367-369, 1410 Waterloo, Belgium

This hotel is 3* but has a 5* location, being the only hotel actually on the battlefield. It’s rooms are however pretty basic and the restaurant very French in every way!(no English spoken). It has no air conditioning and the rooms in the roof get stiflingly hot in very warm periods. Breakfast is an adequate continental breakfast. Has free parking.

Best Features

Location, views (ask for a 1st floor room overlooking the road – great vistas of battlefield), excellent restaurants next door, cheap (average E 70-90 per night for a room).

Ibis Hotel 3*

Boulevard Henri Rolin 5A, Waterloo 1410, Belgium –

Central Location in Waterloo town, within a mile of the main restaurant area, Hotel nice friendly staff and modern, you get what you would expect from an Ibis, no more no less. Breakfast a good standard

Prices around 80E Per night.

There are a number of other hotels, but I am unable to make recommendations not having used them. If others would like to supply me their recommendations I will happily include them.

Le Joli Bois – Rue Sainte-Anne 59, Waterloo 1410, Belgium – Good Basic Hotel

This is not an exhaustive list of eateries, but again ones I can thoroughly recommend. If you want to recommend others, then please let me know.

Waterloo is often rated as one of the top ten cities to live in the country. It is also a fantastic place for a holiday, having several notable attractions, and hosting a plethora of festivals and events. You can eat, drink and shop in Waterloo, as well as enjoy the outdoors or delve into the region’s history.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Waterloo :

RIM Park

The two square kilometre RIM Park is city park with both indoor and outdoor facilities. The park sits on the northeast side of the city, part of which is on the edge of the Grand River.

Enjoy the outdoors by walking or jogging along the seven kilometre loop trail, playing beach volleyball or having a picnic. There are also 12 multi-purpose fields, a playground and six ball diamonds.

RIM Park is also home to the Manulife Sportsplex and Healthy Living Centre, which features four Olympic-sized ice pads, two gymnasiums and an indoor field.

2. Play a round of golf

Grey Silo Golf Course

This can be done right in the city at the Grey Silo Golf Course. The 18-hole golf course is a public course that happens to be located within RIM Park.

The course was designed by Steve Young and opened in 2000. It is a breath-taking course that is owned and run by the city.

The Grey Silo Golf Course hosted the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic between 2010 and 2014. It also holds other tournaments throughout the season.

3. Stare at works of art

Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery

Not painting, sculptures and photographs like many other galleries. Instead, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery exhibits ceramic, enamel, glass and stained glass works of art.

This is only art gallery in the country that is exclusively dedicated to this type of art, with over 900 pieces in its collection. The permanent collection is spread across five galleries, with art work dating from the mid-20th century to today.

Over 20,000 people visit the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery each year to look at the beautiful works of art. Afterwards, head to the gallery shop and take a beautiful piece of ceramic or glass art home with you.

4. Wander around campus

University Of Waterloo

Waterloo is known for its universities, in which there are two in the city; the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. Wander around the grounds of either of these lovely campuses.

The University of Waterloo sits on 404 hectares of land. The oldest building on campus is the Graduate House that dates back to the 19th century.

Wilfrid Laurier University was established in 1911 as the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary of Canada. Despite this, today it also has plenty of modern buildings amongst the greenery and the gardens.

5. Go on a historic walking tour

Waterloo Town Square

Waterloo is a historic city and a historic walking tour is a great way to delve into this. There are two neighbourhoods that are great this; the Mary-Allen neighbourhood and Uptown Waterloo.

The Mary-Allen neighbourhood is a 2.5 kilometre historic walking tour that begins at Waterloo Square. Sites seen include the 19th century Heritage Park, the Gothic style 28 George Street, St. Louis Church and the Victorian double-house at 222 and 224 King Street South.

The 1.8 kilometre historic walking tour around Uptown Waterloo starts at the Waterloo Public Library. A few sites you will see on this walk include the Tudor style 47 Albert Street, the American federal style 71 Albert Street, the Georgian style 109 Albert Street and the Arts and Craft style 73 Dorset Street.

6. Drink like you would in Germany

Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest

The annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is the largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany. It has been running for over 75 years and attracts over 700,000 people.

Beer is the main theme at Oktoberfest, especially during the opening ceremonies. However, there is also a cultural aspect to the renowned festival.

Some events that take place during the 9-day festival include a barrel race, a 5K Fun Run and a parade. There is also the Miss Oktoberfest Gala Ball, Rocktoberfest and the Oktoberfest Car Show.

7. Head to the mall

Conestoga Mall

Like any North American city, Waterloo would not be complete without a large shopping mall. In this case, it is Conestoga Mall.

This 63,292.2 square metre mall is home to over 130 shops and services, in addition to having numerous places to eat. It also boasts a museum that contains over 10,000 historical artefacts.

Some big name international shops you will find in the mall include Old Navy, Apple, H&M, Bench and The Body Shop. There are also big name Canadian shops, like Sport Chek and Winners.

Take it one step further and join the engineer in the cab! Afterwards, go to the railway museum to learn more about the steam engines’ history.

9. Go to the market

St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, Waterloo, Canada

Speaking of St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market, this is also an attraction in its own right and this, together with a train ride makes for a great day. It is Canada’s largest year-round market and attracts roughly one million visitors each year.

The market is a farmers’ market and flea market rolled into one that was established in 1975. It was originally just a bunch of tents, but today is massive 3,200 square metre building.

There is fresh locally grown food, arts and crafts, baked goods, jewellery and plenty more at the market. The market also has bouncing castles, horse drawn tours and an animal farm.

10. Have a picnic on a beach

Laurel Creek

Yes, there is a beach in Waterloo where you can swim, windsurf, canoe or have a picnic. The beach is located in Laurel Creek Park in the northwest part of the city.

Laurel Creek Park also has over 120 campsites, so you can fully immerse yourself in the outdoors. The park also boasts over four kilometres of hiking trails along the reservoir and through forest.

There are quite a few facilities at the park, including a boat launch, two playgrounds, a ball diamond and gatehouse.

11. Watch Shakespeare plays

Stratford Festival

Although the Stratford Festival is not actually in Waterloo, it is definitely worth attending. The internationally recognised festival is known for its Shakespearean plays.

The Stratford Festival runs from April to October, so there really are no excuses for missing it unless you are here in the winter. It is happens to be one of the country’s most prominent arts festivals.

There are four venues for the festival, which never change from year to year. In addition to Shakespearean plays, there is also a few contemporary works as well as at least one musical.

12. Splash around

Bingemans Big Splash

On a hot day grab the kids and head to Bingemans Big Splash in neighbouring Kitchener. The water park is a great place to cool off and have some fun.

The water park is home to quite a few attractions, including AquaTube slides, a wave pool and a water playground. There are also plenty of other fun things to do to cool off.

If you prefer not to get wet, Bingemans Big Splash also has a massive indoor family playground, an arcade and a bowling arena. Plus, it boasts an outdoor mini golf course.

13. Go to the races

Grand River Raceway, Elmira

Grand River Raceway is a horse racing and gaming destination in the village of Elmira. Elmira is just northeast of Waterloo and is the last stop on the Waterloo Central Railway.

Watch a live horserace in the grandstands or even ride a horse yourself! The raceway offers a hands on experience where you actually get to ride in a double seated jog cart, with assistance of course.

You can also try your luck on one of the 230 slot machines. The Grand River Raceway also hosts Bingo nights, murder mystery nights and trivia nights.

14. Be awed with virtual reality

Ctrl V Waterloo

Canada’s first ever virtual reality arcade opened in 2016 right in Waterloo. This is Ctrl V’s flagship location, boasting 16 different virtual reality station.

In the Cemetery

Join Museum staff at Mount Hope Cemetery for a guided tour of Waterloo’s oldest community cemetery. In 1865, the councils of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener) decided to form a joint committee to investigate having a large community cemetery overlap between the two municipalities. A year later in September 1866, Waterloo decided to act on its own and purchased seven acres of land from the Village Reeve and Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, John Hoffman. An additional acre of land was donated by Hoffman to be used as a Free Cemetery. The cemetery opened on January 14, 1867 after the council of Waterloo passed by law 25 which set out the regulations for use; officially creating Mount Hope Cemetery. Afterwards, we travel north from Missoula to Whitefish, viewing some of the most spectacular scenery our nation has to offer in Montana’s Big Sky Country. Along the way, we break for a delicious included Welcome Lunch in Polson and take in amazing views of Flathead Lake and the surrounding Flathead National Forest. Arriving in Whitefish, we stop at a nearby mountain resort to enjoy a scenic gondola ride to the mountaintop for bird’s-eye views. We then check in to our overnight accommodations and have a restful evening.

Day 3 : Going-to-the-Sun Road

After an included breakfast, we’re off to Glacier National Park, which features over 20 glaciers and 200 lakes as standing reminders of the last Ice Age. We board vintage 1930s Red Buses with roll-back tops for a journey on one of the world’s most scenic routes, Going-to-the-Sun Road. Throughout this drive, learn more about the park’s history from an expert guide, take in views of the towering mountains, and gaze upon a variety of majestic wildlife including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, and moose. Enjoy lunch within the park at St. Mary Village before we continue to Great Falls and check in to our accommodations for the evening.

Day 4 : Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center

We begin our day with a tour of the Lewis & Clark Historic Trail Interpretive Center and relive the explorers’ brave journey. Overlooking the beautiful Missouri River, this center includes exhibits, artifacts, films, and a two-story diorama of the expedition’s portage of the river’s waterfalls. After an included lunch, we visit the C.M. Russell Museum, an art complex that’s dedicated to Charles Marion Russell. Known as one of America’s greatest artists, his primary focus was the signature “cowboy art” that showcased Western cultures, landscapes, and wildlife. We then depart for Helena, Montana’s capital and the heart of this Big Sky State. We check in to our hotel for the next two nights and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Day 5 : Gates of the Mountains

Following our included breakfast, we embark on a guided city tour of Helena. Learn about the storied history of this vibrant city and marvel at the Gothic-style cathedral, which rivals those in Europe with its stunning towers and stained-glass windows. Our tour makes stops at various intriguing attractions, like the Montana State Capitol building. This afternoon, we board a riverboat to discover the epitome of Montana’s natural beauty, Gates of the Mountains, coined by famous explorer Meriwether Lewis. A guide narrates our journey down the Missouri River, sharing historic stories of Lewis and Clark’s explorations. As we marvel at the rugged scenery with towering limestone cliffs to both sides of the boat, keep watch for intriguing wildlife. Tonight, we enjoy an included dinner together and return to our hotel.

Day 6 : Yellowstone National Park

This morning, we begin our drive to Gardiner, Montana, the original gateway to America’s first national park. Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 to protect a large variety of wildlife and preserve the world’s most extraordinary collection of geysers and hot springs. We have free time in the Mammoth Hot Springs area to explore nature’s beauty before traveling through the northern loop of Yellowstone, where we may have the opportunity to be part of the notorious bison traffic jam. This evening, we travel to West Yellowstone for our accommodations with shops and restaurants conveniently nearby.

We depart Yellowstone this afternoon and settle in for a comfortable two-night stay in Jackson, Wyoming.

Day 8 : The Grand Tetons

This morning, we visit Grand Teton National Park, boasting picturesque views of shimmering lakes, rolling meadows, and soaring mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks. Watch for elk, bison, fox, moose, and bald eagles as we venture through the park and take advantage of premier photo opportunities. Learn about the past, present, and future of this protected area with immaculate exhibits and a short video during our stop at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center. We also visit the Chapel of the Transfiguration, a rustic log chapel with 100-year-old history and picture-perfect vistas of the Tetons, including Grand Teton. Waterloo Park Self-Guided Tour

Welcome to waterloo park, downtown austin’s largest greenspace.

Waterloo Greenway is a remarkable story that’s still unfolding — one filled with generations of diverse communities and unforgettable moments that shaped the landscape of Waller Creek. Today, the park binds this vital part of our city’s shared history together, while creating a brighter future for all. Browse through our tour stops below as you explore the 11-acre Waterloo Park. You’ll learn some fun facts about the park’s history, landscape, architecture, and more!

waterloo city tour

Take a peek over the north edge of the Farmer Bridge guardrail to discover a revitalized Waller Creek.

This special area in front of you is designed to restore and preserve Waller Creek’s natural beauty. Healthy creekside systems do important work. When we built over the wetlands, meadows, and trees that meandered along Waller Creek, we took away parts of nature’s toolkit, leading to erosion and increased flooding. Waterloo Greenway includes thoughtful creekside landscapes that “take a leaf” out of nature’s playbook. Natural landscapes and native plantings stabilize slopes, absorb heavy rainfall, and create a healthier habitat for wildlife. As they grow, these green spaces will bring nature back into the heart of the city for everyone to enjoy. The limestone walls and plant palette in this area of the park were inspired by Central Texas hill country streams.    The section of creek in front of you is part of a larger vision to restore and protect the entirety of flood-prone lower Waller Creek. It serves as a living model of how natural creekside systems work. Creek restoration between 14th and 15th Streets was made possible through a collaborative effort between the City of Austin’s  Watershed Protection Department (WPD) ,  Parks and Recreation Department , and us, the Waterloo Greenway Conservancy. Please enjoy this landscape from trails and overlooks and keep kids and pets away from growing plants.

Waterloo Park History

Today it is Waterloo Greenway, but for generations, the ground beneath your feet was one of Austin’s oldest and most diverse residential neighborhoods. You can learn more about the history of Waterloo Park on the signage located along the Farmer Bridge guardrail.

Interpretive signs illustrating the role of Waller Creek in the founding of Austin, the diversity of previous residents, history of area businesses, live music scene in the Red River Cultural District, and significant flood events of the past were installed in Waterloo Park, with support from the Summerlee Foundation. Through historic photos and descriptions, the signs highlight the people who have lived and worked along Waller Creek – viewable at the Farmer Bridge at 14th Street and overlooking the Waller Creek Tunnel Inlet Facility.

For over 15,000 years, Indigenous Peoples had their own relationship with this landscape. Generations occupied the Waller Creek area long before it bore that name, including the Coahuiltecans, Lipan Apache, Tonkawa, and Comanche Tribes. Local waters represented a spiritual connection, home to many sacred traditions. Eventually, European settlement into Texas forced most Indigenous Peoples to go underground and identify as “Mexican” in order to stay in their ancestral lands.

Labeled “Austin’s Spring Creek” in an 1838 map, Waller Creek soon finds itself in the heart of American history. In 1839, the neighboring town of Waterloo becomes the capital of the new Republic of Texas. A new city rises quickly, changing its name to Austin. Before our community was named “Austin,” it was known as “Waterloo.”

In the 1840s, German and Swedish immigrants settle on Waller Creek. They establish some of the first businesses in the area. After enduring enslavement, recently freed African Americans created a community here along the banks of Waller Creek. Sometimes called the “Red River Community,” these families lived in and around the land that is today Waterloo Park. Mexican and Lebanese immigrants fleeing political unrest arrive a few decades later.

The experiences at Waterloo Park’s Moody Amphitheater will be as limitless as your imagination.

With year-round concerts, cultural events, community festivals, and so much more, Moody Amphitheater will be your new go-to destination for live entertainment in downtown Austin. Designed and built into the natural fabric of Waterloo Park, the Moody Amphitheater features more than 38,000 square feet of grass on the Great Lawn, comfortably fitting up to 5,000 people at a time. Unlike other major entertainment venues, park-goers will be able to picnic, play, or perform on the stage when it is not being used for large-scale concerts produced by our partners at Live Nation Entertainment and C3 Presents.

Waterloo Park Area History

In the 1950s and 1960s, Red River Street took its place as the heart of Austin’s music scene. Early entertainment clubs reflected the diversity of the surrounding neighborhoods. Even as urban renewal transformed the area – now known as the Red River Cultural District – it continues to be a place of musical innovation and cultural expression.

In the 1970s, six blocks of homes were condemned and their families displaced to make way for Waterloo Park and other urban renewal projects.

Since 1978, Waterloo Park has been home to many authentically Austin experiences such as Spamarama, Pachanga, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Mess with Texas, and the Ice Cream Festival. In April 1978, Symphony Square opened as a southeastward extension of Waterloo Park on both sides of E. 11th Street, east of Red River Street. The new headquarters of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Square is formed by four historic buildings: the Jeremiah Hamilton House (the only building original to the site), New Orleans Club, William P. Hardeman House, and Michael Doyle House.  Read more about Symphony Square’s history .

The launch of the Moody Amphitheater in August 2021 represented a homecoming of sorts, as Waterloo Greenway will build upon the legacy of live music, festivals, and public art once hosted at Waterloo Park.

  • Venue capacity: 5,000
  • The Moody Amphitheater canopy, designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, is made up of 5 miles of steel, aluminum, and glass.
  • The venue was designed to be integrated seamlessly into the Waterloo Park landscape and can be adapted flexibly for a variety of uses, from fully seated concerts, to open lawn performing arts events and festivals, to general use by the public when not actively programmed.

In addition to concerts produced by Live Nation and C3 Presents, Waterloo Greenway will offer a diverse array of locally focused cultural programs that will support and showcase Austin’s creative community. Moody Amphitheater will be a home for other community events including physical & mental wellness activities, multi-disciplinary live performances, film screenings, and more.

The Kitty King Powell Lawn at Waterloo Park is a space for engaging play and endless exploration.

Nestled between the Love, Tito’s Lawn and Luci and Ian’s Family Hill Country Garden, the Kitty King Powell Lawn is the backyard of your dreams. Kids can get active while letting their imaginations run wild exploring the playground’s nature-inspired play features. They can scale the Log Jam climbing structure, play hide-and-seek in the Mega Grass Maze, scramble up the rolling hills, and sail down the hillside stone slide. Colossal shade trees surround the play area, creating spaces to relax and stay cool. The Kitty King Powell Lawn is home to one of the largest shade trees in Waterloo Park. The 150-ton Heritage Live Oak behind the guardrail near the water fountain was relocated from the Texas State Capitol Complex and replanted here in 2019. This dynamic green space was funded by, and named in memory of, Kitty King Powell who spent much of her life in Austin with her husband and family. Although she later moved to Houston, she had fond memories of her hometown and wanted to ensure Austin kept its natural beauty — green, vibrant, and welcoming to all.

The Meredith Heritage Tree Deck is home to two of the largest, oldest trees in Waterloo Park.

Nestled between the Family Commons and Moody Amphitheater, the Meredith Heritage Tree Deck provides a space where people can gather, picnic, and enjoy generous shade beneath two towering escarpment live oak trees that are estimated to be over 200 years old. Many arborists were involved in the preservation of these massive trees during the construction of the deck, ensuring both root systems were left unharmed. Watch this clip from one of our Waterloo Park Virtual Tours to learn more about the design and construction of the Meredith Heritage Tree Deck.

The Family Commons at Waterloo Park is a place where people can grab a bite to eat at one of our resident food trucks and freshen up after a long day of exploration.

Waterloo Park features space for two food trucks to provide local, affordable food for guests to enjoy during park hours or at special events. In 2017, we conducted a series of public meetings, community outreach, and surveys to determine what kind of food options people wanted to see at Waterloo Greenway. We found that people wanted diverse food options that are local, family-friendly, sustainable, and affordable—among other key findings . Local architects at Michael Hsu Office of Architecture collaborated closely with New York-based Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. to design the Family Commons at Waterloo Park. You can find this building nestled into the landscape between the Kitty King Powell Lawn and the Meredith Heritage Tree Deck. The Family Commons reflects the park’s architectural language with a concrete structure, designed to keep the park’s landscape at the forefront of the experience. The seemingly simple, open-air building is heavily rooted, with a roof that is designed so that it appears to float over the space. A free-standing, concrete vessel sink mirrors the building’s form and is designed to withstand the elements. A large skylight at the back of the sloped roof bathes the concrete interior in natural lighting. A planter located below the skylight, once mature, will cover the back wall with greenery.

Watch this Waterloo Park Virtual Tour to learn more about the design and construction of the Family Commons.

Enjoy scenic views of Waterloo Park as you glide through the Suzanne Deal Booth Skywalk.

Starting at the intersection of 12th and Trinity Streets, the Suzanne Deal Booth Skywalk provides a stunning view and entrance point to Waterloo Park’s endless trails, lush gardens, welcoming gathering spaces, and of course, the 5,000-capacity Moody Amphitheater. The Suzanne Deal Booth Skywalk is an artful ADA-accessible path that winds into the heart of the park. Snaking its way over and around the Luci and Ian’s Family Hill Country Garden, Lebermann Plaza, and Kitty King Powell Lawn, the skywalk leads parkgoers toward the Moody Amphitheater where you can kick back and enjoy live music, theater, dance, and a variety of family-friendly programs on the Love, Tito’s Lawn.

Nestled within a curve of the Suzanne Deal Booth Skywalk, the Lebermann Plaza is an intimate gathering space where parkgoers can relax, rehydrate, and take in scenic views of Waterloo Park.

With built-in limestone seating for more than 100 people, the possibilities for activations in the Lebermann Plaza are endless! Just imagine laughing the night away at an outdoor Open Mic night, clapping along to an acoustic performance by your favorite local artist, or being inspired by a breathtaking AcroYoga dance performance — expect the unexpected in the Lebermann Plaza!

Get lost exploring thousands of native plants and blooming wildflowers in Luci and Ian’s Family Hill Country Garden at Waterloo Park.

More than 95% of the plantings are native to the area and were selected in a collaborative effort between local landscape architecture firm dwg. , world-renowned architects at Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates, Inc. , and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center . The diverse mix of delicate plants that were incorporated into Luci and Ian’s Family Hill Country Garden represent a wide range of species that are indigenous to Central Texas. “It’s a celebration of our native plants,” says dwg. Landscape Architect Cassie Bergstrom Gowan. “The plantings at Waterloo Park are a symphony of color that are geared toward attracting pollinators, hummingbirds, and other wildlife.”

Thanks to the support of our partnership with the Consulate General of Canada, Waterloo Greenway has been given the ability to make this project come to life. As a conservancy, we are committed to not only supporting park pollinators, but also the critical monarch butterfly migration across the North American fly path and creating opportunities for public education. Stone paths meander through the landscape, inviting park visitors to explore the garden and connect with nature.

Throughout Waterloo Park, you’ll find:

  • 91,904 plants
  • 100 herbaceous perennials
  • 20 succulents (cacti, woody lilies such as agaves, sotols, dasylirions, yuccas)
  • 524 trees (38 tree species)

FUN FACT: 8 of the trees in Waterloo Park were carefully transplanted from the University of Texas at Austin , the Texas State Capitol Complex , Symphony Square , and from within Waterloo Park. They range in size from small heritage oaks to a  42” heritage Live Oak! You can learn more about the trees that have found their new homes at Waterloo Park below:

Discover the Winkler Family Wetland Terrace at Waterloo Park

Located in the southeast corner of Waterloo Park, the Winkler Family Wetland Terrace is a densely planted area that will serve as the trailhead to a restored Waterloo Greenway. It is a welcoming gathering space where people can take a pleasant stroll, unwind, and enjoy scenic views of Waller Creek. At the intersection of 12th and Red River Streets, pavers and an outward-facing circular bench surround a  150-year-old heritage oak tree  that was transplanted from its original location just down the block between the Austin Symphony Orchestra offices and Symphony Square. This new seating area was designed to protect the tree’s root ball while providing yet another unique space for people to catch some shade and connect with nature and one another in Waterloo Park. East of the Winkler Family Wetland Terrace is the Waller Creek Tunnel Inlet Facility, where a 5,600 ft. long tunnel captures floodwaters and releases them into Lady Bird Lake.

The  Waller Creek Tunnel Inlet Facility removes more than 28 acres of downtown from the floodplain, keeps people safe from flash flooding, and protects dozens of structures and roadways.

The Waller Creek Tunnel is approximately 5,600 feet long and moves floodwaters safely under our city, opening new possibilities for a healthier, revitalized creek corridor. Historically, devastating flooding along Waller Creek claimed lives and property—leading to neglect and economic depression. The Waller Creek Tunnel prevents flooding south of 12th Street and supports the creek’s health, striking an innovative balance between our city and the natural world. Completed by the City of Austin in 2017, the tunnel’s construction sparked the revitalization of Waterloo Park and the creation of Waterloo Greenway. Operated by the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department , this facility removes more than 28 acres of downtown from the floodplain, keeps people safe from flash flooding, and protects dozens of structures and roadways. It also helps ease bank erosion during wet times and gently pumps water from Lady Bird Lake back into the creek during drier periods.

Waller Creek History

The streets that border Waller Creek were home to working class families since the 1800s. Historic flood events repeatedly destroyed homes, damaged property, swept away bridges, and claimed lives, making life on the creek dangerous. Waller Creek was prone to violent flash floods. In 1915, a devastating flood carried away houses and claimed the lives of as many as 50 people who lived along its banks.

Talk of diverting Waller Creek began in the 1970s. Despite decades of beautification and infrastructure projects, Waller Creek remained a flood-prone and economically depressed area. In 1999, the City of Austin responded by working with local partners to plan and build a tunnel from Waterloo Park to Lady Bird Lake. Today, the Waller Creek Tunnel moves floodwaters safely under the eastern portion of downtown, allowing the Waterloo Greenway area to flourish.

Wall Painting For Austin

Waterloo Park features stunning new artwork by internationally-renowned Venezuelan artist Arturo Herrera in a larger than life mural that was inspired by its natural habitat along Waller Creek.

Named  Wall Painting for Austin , the mural was commissioned by Waterloo Greenway Conservancy in partnership with the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection and Parks & Recreation Departments. A team of talented local artists installed the 6,587 sq. ft. artwork, including Jason Archer and Josh Row of Show Goat Mural Works , along with brother and sister duo Joe Swec and Jana Swec – whose work can be found at local favorites including Hillside Farmacy, Easy Tiger and Loro.

  • The tunnel lies 70 feet below the surface of downtown.
  • It ranges in size from 22 to 26 feet in diameter.
  • The tunnel is approximately 5,600 feet long.
  • The Waller Creek Tunnel Inlet Facility features a  6,587 sq. ft. mural  designed by internationally-renowned Venezuelan artist Arturo Herrera.
