A Guide to the Mojave Air & Space Port for Aviation Geeks

Table of Contents

Where do aviation geeks go when they want to see Boeing 747’s and other widebody aircraft, military planes, private planes, and general aviation aircraft? They go into the desert! There are few locations throughout the U.S. with these characteristics but one is special. This special location is approximately 70 miles (112,6 km) north of Downtown Los Angeles. It is called the Mojave Air & Space Port.

But what’s so special about this place?

Way back in time this airport was called the Mojave Airport and was built in 1935 by Kern County to support the gold and silver mining industry in the region. The airport only had two dirt runways at that point.

During World War II the military stepped in and upgraded the airport. The runways were asphalted and extended and a third one was added. Up until 1972, the airport was used by various military branches and purposes. Including stationing whole squadrons here during the war and training of new pilots.

At the beginning of 1972, East Kern Airport District (EKAD) was formed to administer the airport and they are doing it to this day. In 2012 the name was changed to Mojave Air and Space Port (MASP).

That’s the long story short.

Flight Testing

Because of its location, this airport is perfect for testing new flying apparatuses and aircraft. The location in the desert, away from populated areas is ideal, as well as the proximity to Edwards Air Force Base where the airspace is restricted from the ground to an unlimited height.

The airport is both used for military as well as civilian flight testing. Mojave also houses the only civilian test pilot school in the U.S. – the National Test Pilot School (NTPS).

A noteworthy test flight which was just recently conducted at Mojave Air & Space Port was the first flight of Stratolaunch on April 13, 2019. Stratolaunch is the biggest airplane in the world by wingspan and is intended to launch rockets into space by dropping them from underneath an aircraft at high altitude. Stratolaunch Systems was founded by Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen.

The whole space flight testing started out with the Rotary Rocket program. You can see the Roton, the original Rotary Rocket at the Legacy Park near the old tower and the main terminal building. Roton did some test “hops” but never made it into space as the company behind it went bankrupt.

Here a small list of companies operating at Mojave Air & Space Port

  • Virgin Galactic / The Spaceship Company
  • Virgin Orbit
  • Stratolaunch Systems
  • Northrop Grumman

Mojave Air & Space Port is also home to Stargazer, an aircraft, owned by Northrop Grumman, used as a mother ship launchpad for Pegasus rockets . Stargazer, which is a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, just recently launched the Ionospheric Connection Explorer on 11 October 2019. Be aware that photography is not allowed around the aircraft even from outside the fence. Please respect it.

Aircraft Boneyard, Storage and Parts Reclamation Facility

Where do you send old airplanes you don’t need anymore? Correct, in the desert. Many national and international airlines send their aircraft to Mojave for storage or to be stripped down for parts and then ultimately scrapped. Limited precipitation and the dry air reduce corrosion and the ground doesn’t need to be paved. There is no access to the boneyard but you can see the big planes from miles away. The most dominant aircraft parked here is the Boeing 747 from various airlines like Lufthansa, Qantas, Atlas Air, Thai Airways to name a few.

Visiting the Mojave Air & Space Port

Please follow a few simple rules to make this an interesting visit for you and others to come. Most important, obey posted signs (No Photography) and instructions from security forces and personnel. There are quite a few things to do here. Some of them need some planning ahead while for most of them you can just drop in, whenever you are in the area.

The Mojave Air & Space Port is located next to the town carrying the same name – Mojave. Mojave, the town, is located in the south-western region of the Mojave Desert. Wow, that’s a lot of Mojave here. By the way, Mojave is also a version of macOS just to complete the list.

You might be surprised, but it’s easy to miss the entrance to the airport, which is Airport Blvd. It’s a small street turning off from California State Route 58 – Business. Depending on which direction you are coming from, you have to take the small road between the Comfort Inn & Suites and the Aircrafts parked next to the road. This would be also your first stop. There is a gap in the fence, that’s the road you have to take.

Aircraft Display and Mojave Air & Space Port Sign

Park on either side of the road, but off the road. There is plenty of space here and usually, nobody is around. Don’t block the road in any way.

This spot features three aircraft.

  • Convair CV-990 Coronado: Used last by NASA to do research on the Space Shuttle landing gear and brakes. It’s is one of only a handful of surviving Convair 990.
  • McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom: Used as a flight test aircraft in the early stages of BAE/Flight Systems’ QF-4 modification program.
  • SAAB TF-35XD Draken: Super Sonic Jet Trainer. Was used by the National Test Pilot School to train pilots between 1994-2009.

Don’t forget to take a picture of the airport sign as well. You will need it for your Instagram. 😉

Stuart O Witt Event Center and Mojave Fitness Center

As you follow Airport Blvd make a right on Poole Street and the second building on your left will be the Stuart O Witt Event Center. During its time as a military airfield, this building housed a pool that was used for water survival training for military pilots. It got repurposed and is now an event center. At the very end of the building, you find the Mojave Fitness Center .

Airport Terminal and Old Tower

Get back on Airport Blvd and follow it all the way to the end. Park in any of the marked spots in front of the building. Woohoo, free airport parking. Where do you find that nowadays? You can even charge your electric vehicle here.

This is another Instagram worthy spot. Get the tower with the airport logo in the grass right in front of it.

Legacy Park

Keep your car parked and walk south-west towards the legacy park. It’s just across the driveway you just took to get here. Stroll through this small park and see the original Rotary Rocket Roton ATV. This was the first rocket-powered vehicle to fly from Mojave Air & Space Port in 1999.

mojave airport visit

Inside the building right next to the Roton, you see a Scaled Composites SpaceShipOne Replica. The original SpaceShipOne was part of the first private manned space program and flew to space from Mojave Air & Space Port on June 21st, 2004.

Another exhibit inside the Legacy Park is the “Golden Queen Mine Cart”. It commemorates the Mojave area’s rich mining history. Furthermore, there are some commemorative plaques about the history of Mojave Air & Space Port.

Voyager Restaurant

mojave airport visit

I am sure, all this walking around and taking pictures made you hungry and thirsty. It made me. Visit the local dining establishment, called Voyager Restaurant which serves breakfast and lunch. The restaurant is located in the main terminal building and the entrance is on the left side of the tower.

Hours Monday-Friday: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sunday: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

If you decide to come in by plane, just ask the tower to taxi to the restaurant. Voyager Restaurant features free Wi-Fi, great food with an aeronautically-inspired menu, flight line views (you already know that when you arrived by plane 😉 ) and tower radio at each table. Besides that, you will find interesting photographs on the walls. Make sure you check this place out. Definitely worth it.

Plane Crazy Saturdays

This is the ultimate event for aviation geeks at MASP. Every 3rd Saturday of the month, a bunch of aviation crazy people come to the airport and enjoy each other’s company as well as the planes in which they fly-in. Yes, many of the participants fly in their own planes and exhibit them on the flight line, just outside of Voyager Restaurant. By the way, during the event days, the restaurant already opens at 7 a.m.

The event is free and you are allowed to walk out on the flight line/apron to look at the planes. Photography is highly encouraged during the event. Airport security will make sure you don’t wander off too far onto the taxiway or even runways. Just stay within save distance of the taxiway. Don’t touch any of the aircraft until otherwise noticed by the owner of the respective aircraft.

mojave airport visit

Event Hours: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

There is a guest speaker presentation during the event, mostly at 11 a.m. Check the website for upcoming events and guest speakers. A donation is requested for the guest speaker talk.

This event is also perfect to take photos of the aircraft boneyard. Don’t forget to bring a good zoom lens as they are pretty far away.

Views of the South-East Airport Area

Another scenic spot is near the Kern County Animal Shelter – Mojave. From here you get a good view of the south-east airport area which includes views of the Stratolaunch hangar and Virgin Galactic hangar where The Spaceship Company (TSC) is developing the world’s first commercial spaceline. But aren’t you really here do adopt a dog from the shelter?

mojave airport visit

The Mojave Air & Space Port is absolutely worth a visit. Lot’s of history here and still being made from time to time. It’s really the best to combine your visit here with the Plane Crazy Saturday event and get the most out of it. There is not much going on during the other days throughout the month. You can still add it in as a quick stop on a road trip. If you are into history, you should definitely stop by here.

Mojave Air & Space Port

The Deserts

This port made history in 2003 with the launch of SpaceShipOne, the first privately funded human space flight, thus laying the groundwork for commercial space tourism. A replica of SpaceShipOne is on display in the airport’s small Legacy Park, along with a scale model of the Voyager aircraft and an original Rotary Rocket Roton, a manned spacecraft intended to deliver small satellites into space. The Voyager Cafe has some great old photographs. Enter from Airport Blvd, off Hwy 58.

Part of the airport is a huge airplane graveyard (off-limits to visitors) where retired commercial airplanes roost in the dry desert air waiting to be scavenged for spare parts.

The Mojave Air and Space Port is located two kilometres east of Mojave, in Kern County, California. In addition to being a functioning airport, the facility has been certified as a spaceport by the Federal Aviation Administration and is used for space flight testing by Virgin Galactic and spacecraft manufacturer, Scaled Composites, among others. The facility covers 2,998 acres (1,213 ha) and has three runways. In 2004, the first successful flight of the privately developed, reusable spacecraft SpaceShipOne was performed here. Over the past years the infrastructure has been upgraded to accommodate significant flight line development and industrial manufacturing utilizing common industry components which complement each other. Today, the Mojave Air and Space Port is also home to Cosmic Girl, Virgin Orbit's carrier aircraft that launches commercial LauncherOne rockets.

Mojave Air & Space Port

“There are a lot of small desert towns in the United States… but only ONE small desert town with a functioning SPACE PORT!”

Mojave, California holds a special place as the center of the commercial space industry; and since a successful industry depends on recruiting and retaining the world’s top talent, this community is critical to the long-term success of the commercial space industry and exploration. As industries compete for top university graduates, quality of life will play an increasingly important role in the decision engineers make about where to build a career. The Mojave Foundation aims to fundamentally change expectations about this community – to encourage people to live closer to where they work. We will do this by connecting private and public stake-holders with local development efforts, to deliver the security, housing, amenities, and beauty to support the jobs of the 21 st century. Most importantly, we are dedicated full-time to providing the planning, fundraising and project management to ensure that Mojave is a more livable, attractive community on par with any knowledge-based city in the world.

There are several giants in the industry, developing breakthrough technologies in Mojave that will revolutionize the relationship between humans and space. Visionaries like Burt Rutan, Richard Branson and Paul Allen are fundamentally changing our relationship with space travel and space exploration, and keeping this groundbreaking industry here in Mojave requires Making our community compatible with the innovation and technology being developed here. Companies like Scaled Composits, Stratolaunch, Virgin Galactic, XCor, Masten, and Firestar are revolutionizing the industry and their engineers need a place to live. We want them here in Mojave.

Stratolaunch, Paul Allen’s concept currently under construction to be the world’s largest aircraft/spacecraft.

Spaceship Two, Virgin Galactic’s second concept is currently flight testing.

Scaled Composites, with 30 first flights in 30 years, designs, builds and test prototype aircraft.

Interest Point 4 - The Boneyard

Launch Driving Directions

The following links will take you away from the Mojave Air & Space Port Website

Pegasus  | Boneyard

The 2 U.S. Airplane Boneyards Open To The Public

Personally, I’m not a plane enthusiast. I view planes the way I view cars – they’re a means to get me from Point A to Point B. As long as they get me there safely and in the allotted amount of time, I’m good. But I’ve had my share of things I’ve found very interesting in my life, and knew the minutia about, so I “get it.”

I don’t think there’s a plane enthusiast out there who wouldn’t love the opportunity to go to a airplane boneyard. Sometimes known as aircraft boneyards, they’re big, outdoor storage areas for aircraft that either need to be stored for long or short term, or are retired from service. Most aircraft at boneyards are either kept for storage so maintenance can be done to them (many planes were stored in boneyards during COVID, when few commercial planes were flying), or they have their parts removed for reuse or resale, and whatever’s left is scrapped.

Most airplane boneyards in the U.S. are in deserts in the southwest (particularly California and Arizona). The dry conditions reduce corrosion and the hard ground doesn’t have to be paved.

Most aircraft boneyards have never been open to the public, but there’s a small handful of (some limited) exceptions.

Mojave Air and Space Port

Part of the Mojave Air and Space Port, located in the California desert, is a storage and reclamation facility for commercial airliners. it’s not open for tours, but does host a “Plane Crazy Saturday” event on the 3rd Saturday of every month. That’s when you can see the airport, displays, hear speakers, sometimes fly-in, etc. This is their schedule , although it looks as if it hasn’t been updated in a couple of months.

Mojave Air and Space Port also offers a the airport offers a Virtual Driving Tour , which shows several stops around the facility.

Aircraft Restoration & Marketing (ARM)

Perhaps the only true “tour” of an airplane boneyard in the U.S. is that of Aircraft Restoration & Marketing (ARM), which is located next to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Once a month (give or take), The Boneyard Safari offers a hands on tour on cooperation with ARM. From Boneyard Safari:

Take a unique tour and see a side of aviation with an exclusive look through aircraft in their different conditions at Aircraft Restoration Marketing, which is one of the last regeneration facilities in Tucson.  Boneyard Safari Docents will guide 10 guests through a C-130, DC-3/C-47, Boeing 727, and walk around various other aircraft including a C-27A, T-37, C-131F, and P-3.  It is limited to 3 hours due to weather conditions.  Bring your cameras because this is a unique opportunity to go inside of aircraft as they are being regenerated or seeing their final days.  Be prepared for hot weather, so bring a hat, sunscreen and good hiking shoes (lots of critters).

Tours had been suspended during the pandemic but were reinstated a few months ago. The next few tours will be:

  • January 21, 2023 ( <– click on this one for all dates below)
  • February 24, 2023
  • March 9, 2023
  • March 18, 2023
  • April 1, 2023
  • April 15, 2023
  • August 26, 2023

Tours last for 3 hours and cost $40 per person. They do have a limit on how many people can go on the tour, and can and do sell out. So the sooner you sign up, the better.

Other boneyards of note

These boneyards do not appear to have tours at this time, but did in the past (one says they do, but I think it’s questionable):

Pinal Airpark

The Pinal Airpark is located in Marana, Arizona, northwest of Tucson.  T he Airpark is open to the public. However there are 2 distinct sides to the airport:

  • The Landside is generally accessible to anyone.
  • The Airside is where the planes are parked, the runway, and other areas that are dangerous or off limits for security reasons

The FAQ on Pinal Airpark’s website states they have limited availability for tours and to contact them with questions. I’ve tried emailing them and did not get a response.

Davis-Monthan AFB AMARG Facility

There used to be bus tours of Tucson’s Davis-Monthan AFB AMARG Facility, but they have been suspended indefinitely, as per the request of the U.S. Air Force (sad trombone).

There are other US aircraft boneyards that are open but it varies from time to time. Southern California Logistics Airport, near Victorville is another example. Also smaller private boneyards around the country will sometimes allow tours but not set up for such.

Airplane Boneyard Tours

Visiting large boneyards in the western u.s..

Located in Arizona, California and New Mexico are seven major airplane boneyards, each in dry, low-humidity desert environments and offering long runways and extensive storage areas.

Virtually all airplane boneyards and storage facilities are limited access sites.

Boneyards typically do not allow visitors and do not provide tours.

We encourage potential visitors to check with individual sites to learn about access policies and tours.

Shown below is a list of these boneyard facilities ... click the facility name for visitor & tour information.

As always, we recommend obeying all warning signs and avoiding restricted areas.

Touring the Pinal County Airpark Near Tucson, Arizona

The Pinal Airpark , located in Marana, Arizona, northwest of Tucson, is a county-owned airport just north of the Pinal/Pima county line along Interstate 10.

Ascent Aviation Services offers secured ramp and storage area for all sizes of aircraft at the Pinal Airpark.

JetYard LLC is a FAA 145 Repair Station #7QAR515C, providing complete aircraft storage and parking along with part-out and disassembly services.

The Pinal Airpark can be reached via I-10 Exit 232 onto the Pinal Air Park Road ... the gate area is about 3 miles west of Interstate 10.

The Airpark is open to the public. However, there are though two distinct sides to the airport just like most others. The Airside which is the side where the planes are parked, the runway, and other areas that are dangerous or off limits for security reasons, and the Landside which is generally accessible to anyone.

The Pinal Airpark has limited availability for tours, as it is an operational airport. Please contact Christina M. Martinez at (520) 866-6448 or email [email protected] for information/tour questions.

Regarding photography at the Pinal Airpark: If you are on the public side of the airpark, photography is permitted. If you are on the Airside being escorted or on a tour you are asked not to, unless you are told you may. The reason is that many planes are missing engines or other recognizable parts, and some of the owners or operators of those aircraft have asked that people not take pictures because the planes are not in a good condition. It is asked that people respect the wishes of those owners and operators.

For more information, visit the website of the Pinal County Airpark and/or tenant companies and government agencies for current information on access.

The Mojave uncrewed aerial system (UAS) demonstrator aircraft took part in a live fire demonstration in the Yuma desert on 13 April.

The demonstration left a variety of targets “shredded” after it discharged 10,000 rounds of ammunition from its two DAP-6 Gun Pod Systems from Dillon Aerospace, according to a release from the drone manufacturer, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) on 23 April.

The Mojave is designed to conduct long-endurance armed overwatch, armed reconnaissance, and attack missions. It can provide armed support to the forces on the ground. The quick weapons reload capability allows the aircraft to support the ground forces even from austere sites located near the battleground.

The aircraft is part of the GA-ASI’s Predator drone series, known for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, as well as kinetic and non-kinetic fire support overmatch.

“Seeing our Mojave perform this live-fire demo really emphasises the versatility of the Mojave UAS and what it can do,” said GA-ASI president David R. Alexander. “Mojave has the ability to act as a sensor, shooter, and sustainer while mitigating threat environments and vulnerabilities and safeguarding human lives.”

The Mojave is notable for its capacity to carry a high payload of 3,600lb (1,633kg) while operating from sites that have only a short take-off and landing area, providing a wider range of possible deployments, including aircraft carrier, for a greater range of mission types. Without the need for traditional paved runways, the Mojave is capable of operating from forward operating bases.
