Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

what is annual travel insurance?

An annual travel insurance policy is for travellers who leave home multiple times a year on shorter trips. This differs from a year-long single trip policy, which provides continuous cover for you to be away from home for one twelve-month long trip. Annual travel insurance policies have different maximum trip duration limits - that is, the maximum number of days you can spend overseas before you have to come home again. For example, if you purchase a 30-day annual travel insurance policy, you can go on a ten-day trip to Bali for a friend's wedding in April, go on a seven-day Pacific cruise in July, go trekking for three weeks in New Zealand and have a month-long break over Christmas in the USA, and they can all be covered under the one policy. Check out our guide on annual travel insurance and the limits that apply. If you don’t know where you’re travelling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the appropriate region for your trip. Stopovers of less than 48 hours generally do not need to be included (excluding USA and Canada). Worldwide  means anywhere in the world Americas  means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean Europe  means all European countries, including UK Middle East  refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran Asia  generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers, this excludes Japan* Pacific  means the South-West Pacific, New Zealand and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in Australian waters Australia  means domestic travel within Australia only *Some variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and the Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site. Depending on your circumstances, such as your age, and your trip durations and destinations, it can sometimes be cheaper to buy two or three single trip policies than an annual policy, so there are savings to be made by shopping around and comparing your options. Annual INSURANCE faqS

What does annual travel insurance mean.

This may seem like a silly question, but believe it or not, it confuses a lot of travellers! A multi-trip policy, also known as a frequent traveller policy covers you for an unlimited number of short trips throughout the year. Not to be confused with a single-trip policy which is one trip that lasts anywhere from 2 days to 12 months in duration.

Can I buy an annual multi-trip policy at any age?

No, annual multi-trip policies tend to have age limits of around 65 years. Check out our annual travel insurance guide to learn more. Use our quote box above to compare frequent traveller policies to see what cover is available for your age.

How many trips can I take a year with annual cover?

As many as you like! That's the beauty of this product. There are no restrictions on the number of holidays you can take in a year, and you don't even need to tell your insurer each time you take a trip.

Are there trip duration limits?

Yes, that's the catch! When purchasing an annual policy, you must allocate a maximum trip duration which means you cannot go on holiday for more days than specified. See our guide for annual policy trip limits .

Am I covered for business and leisure trips?

Most insurers cover you whether you're travelling for business or pleasure but the benefits may vary. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” travel insurance for business travellers  so it would pay to contact your insurer directly if you had something specific in mind.  Some insurers offer annual business or corporate travel insurance and b usiness equipment may not be covered under personal policies if you're not personally out of pocket. What pre-existing illnesses does frequent travel insurance cover?

Most insurers have a list of pre-existing medical conditions that are automatically covered for free like asthma, cataracts, some types of diabetes, hypertension which do not require an assessment or declaration form to be submitted. If you have a pre-existing medical condition not listed, you may be able to get cover for an additional fee.  If you develop an illness lets say six months into your annual policy, you must tell your insurer as that condition would be considered pre-existing the next time you decide to take a trip. See more about pre-existing conditions and medical assessments here.

So if you've read the PDS and still can't decide, consider checking out the thousands of reviews left by Aussie travellers about their experience with their travel insurer. Were they helpful on the phone? Was their website easy to use? And most importantly, how did they go when customers needed to claim?

If you're a frequent traveller, $1000 cash might come in handy, so if you've had a positive or negative experience with your travel insurer, let us know and you'll go in the draw to win! Terms and conditions apply.

What is multi-trip travel insurance and how does it work?

Multi-trip travel insurance (also known as annual travel insurance) is a type of policy which runs for 12 months and allows frequent travellers to be covered for multiple short-term domestic and international trips under the one agreement. In terms of what's covered, some insurers will offer the same benefits under the type of insurance as they do for standard travel insurance policies based around a single trip (with all trips required to start and end in Australia).

Insurance companies typically stipulate a certain number of travel days which you’re covered for over a year, whether you're taking international trips or travelling around Australia. Some offer coverage for up to 90 days per trip but this differs from insurer to insurer. Additionally, some may offer cover for an unlimited number of trips, though this can also vary between providers.

If you’re a mature-aged traveller, it may be harder to get an annual policy due to the age limits set by insurers for this type of coverage. Age restrictions are different for each lender, some lenders setting their maximum at 64 while others may allow those up to 99 years old to purchase a multi-trip policy (though this will be subject to other eligibility requirements set in place by your lender).

What does multi-trip travel insurance cover?

Annual travel insurance can cover you for a range of costs as part of your trip up to an amount stipulated in your policy. All coverage in all policies will be subject to meeting other qualification criteria specific to your lender, however, which is important to consider before you buy. Some of the common benefits of multi-trip travel insurance can include:

  • Medical treatment: you can be covered for hospital and medical expenses without limit with some insurers, including emergency evacuations. However, medical cover isn’t offered as part of domestic multi-trip policies.
  • Cancellation: if you need to cancel your holiday due to illness or a family emergency, you may be able to be reimbursed for costs such as your flights, accommodation and other non-refundable bookings under your policy.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged items: your insurer may be able to cover the cost of luggage, electronics and more which are lost, stolen or damaged up to a certain amount as outlined in your PDS.
  • Personal liability: you can be covered against financial losses if you're found liable for an injury or illness caused to someone else or damage done to their property while you're away from home.
  • Rental car excess: If you’re driving a hire car and have an accident, you can be covered for the cost of the excess on the repair of the vehicle, up to the amount specified in your insurance policy's terms and conditions (provided the event qualifies for coverage).
  • Credit card or passport fraud: if your credit card or passport is stolen or used without your consent while you're overseas, you can be covered for the cost of replacing them up to your insurer's set limit.
  • 24/7 emergency assistance: if you’re stuck in an emergency situation which your insurer deems claimable, you’ll be able to contact them day or night to get help covering urgent costs, such as medical expenses.
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions: the types of pre-existing conditions covered by travel insurance vary depending on who you choose and will be subject to a range of qualification criteria. However, while some can be included automatically, such as asthma or carpal tunnel syndrome, others may be excluded from coverage, such as cancer and diabetes.

If you’re taking out coverage for multiple trips, you may also be able add on several extras. These will cost more to include, but can offer cover for a range of activities which are deemed high-risk by insurance companies (provided they meet your insurers requirements), including:

  • Motorcycle, moped or scooter riding
  • Skiing or snow sports
  • Contact sports
  • Deep sea fishing
  • Hiking or trekking
  • Quad bike riding or driving all-terrain vehicles

How much does multi-trip travel insurance cost?

How much you pay for your travel insurance will depend on a range of factors, some of which include:

Age The older you are, the more expensive your travel insurance is likely to be. Insurance companies tend to increase the level of risk alongside your age, so you can expect to pay more for your premium depending on when you were born. For example, a 30-year-old is likely to pay less than a 60-year-old person, as they're considered at lesser risk of injury or illness while on holiday.

Destination The countries you choose to travel to will play a part in determining how much you pay on your premium. Countries with more expensive healthcare systems, such as the United States, will cost more in terms of premiums, as there's a greater risk of your insurer having to pay a larger sum to cover a claimable event.

Pre-existing conditions If you suffer from an ongoing medical condition which puts you at risk of requiring treatment while on your travels, it may be important to compare policies and see if you can find one which offers the cover your need. Those in ill health or at greater risk of a medical episode during their holiday will typically pay more for insurance.

Extra activities If you’re travelling to Europe and doing some bungee jumping or heading to Africa to rock climb, you’ll typically need to pay for extra coverage so you’re protected in the event something goes wrong. There are some travel insurance providers who offer extra coverage at an additional cost, covering you for a range of high-risk sports and activities such as scuba diving, hiking, trekking and martial arts (subject to the nature of your claim).

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

How do I compare multi-trip travel insurance?

Inclusions and exclusions.

When you compare insurers with Savvy, you’ll be able to get a crystal-clear idea of what’s included and what isn’t across different policies. This allows you to gain a greater understanding of which options afford you the most coverage where you need it.

The price of premiums

Getting quotes from a few different travel insurance providers will allow you to price-match and find the most affordable deal on the market. Although coverage is generally the most important factor to consider when buying travel insurance, it's also important to ensure you aren't overpaying for your coverage.

Policy limits

Travel insurance providers offer to cover the cost of a range of incidentals, from lost valuables to the excess on your rental car if a claimable incident takes place. However, it's important to consider what the claim limits are for different events under different policies. For example, one company may allow you to claim up to $10,000 for lost or stolen luggage while another may only cover you for up to $5,000, so it's worth considering what your needs are as a traveller.

When you make a successful claim, you may need to pay an excess in order for your insurer to cover the remainder of the cost. This may range from $200 to $500 with some insurers, though there are situations where you may be required to pay a larger excess (such as if you're a senior) or none at all. As such, it's worthwhile considering your options when it comes to excess requirements.

Cooling-off periods

Most policies have a cooling-off period, which may range anywhere from 14 to 25 days. This allows you to cancel at any time within this window and receive a full refund, provided you haven't made any claims during this period. Choosing a provider with a longer cooling-off period means you’ll have a greater amount of time to opt out if you need to reconsider.

Top tips for saving money on multi-trip travel insurance

Compare with savvy.

You can compare some of the best multi-trip policies quickly and easily with Savvy. With trusted travel insurance partners from around Australia, we enable you to consider high-quality offers before you make your decision on which to buy.

Choose a higher excess

The higher your excess, the cheaper your premium is likely to be. Insurers generally allow you to choose your own excess and increasing it can reduce the upfront cost of your policy, as you’re showing your willingness to stump up more if a claim is made.

Consider your destination

As mentioned, some destinations are more expensive to insure than others, which is largely down to the cost of healthcare. For example, your premium may be more expensive if you’re travelling to America than the United Kingdom for this reason.

Purchase insurance early

Buying your travel insurance earlier may allow you to cover more costs down the track. While this won’t save you in upfront costs, it may save you money if you have your policy in place when a covered event forces you to cancel part, or all, of your trip.

Frequently asked multi-trip travel insurance questions

Getting a quote for annual travel insurance is a pretty straightforward process when you’re applying with Savvy. Simply fill out our quote form with information about your destination, length of trip, type of coverage, optional extras and more and you'll be able to instantly compare the range of available offers for the trip you're looking to book.

It’s crucial to read through the Product Disclosure Statements (PDS) so you’re aware of the terms and conditions and inclusions and exclusions. If you decide one of these offers is suited to you, you can simply purchase it online via their site.

When making a claim, you’ll need to provide evidence to support your claim, including medical or police reports and receipts or valuations. Once you’ve prepared your documents and double-check you’re covered for what you need to claim for in your PDS, you can complete your claim. Depending on who you purchase your insurance with, you may be asked for a range of documents and information, which may include:

  • Travel itinerary
  • Police and medical reports
  • Invoices and receipts
  • Written statements
  • Photographs
  • Death certificate
  • Travel provider and/or agent correspondence
  • Proof of ownership of lost personal items

While some travel insurers offer cover for a vast range of countries, you won’t be able to get insured if you travel to a country on the government’s ‘do not travel’ list. It’s a good idea to check with your insurer and monitor the government’s watch list before you depart, as this list can change regularly depending on world events.

There are some insurers who may enable you to extend your policy if you’re already on holiday overseas if the situation is covered by their terms and conditions. You may have to pay an additional premium to extend your cover. For example, if you travelled to Bali and couldn’t return home due to a volcanic ash cloud, relevant delay and cancellation costs may be covered by your policy. However, it’s important to note that not all insurers will allow you to extend your coverage outside of emergency circumstances and may require you to buy a new policy, so it's important to check with them if you're unsure.

Although some exclude pandemic and epidemic-related expenses, there are some insurers which can offer cover for a range of costs stemming from COVID-19. This may include if your trip is cancelled or disrupted due to you testing positive for COVID-19 or if you require medical treatment after you contract the virus. However, not all events will be covered, such as additional costs relating to quarantine after becoming a close contact or incidents which occur within 72 hours of you purchasing your policy. As such, it's crucial to compare your options and dive more into what you can be covered for in relation to COVID-19 prior to buying your travel insurance.

While there are capped limits on how much you can claim for different incidentals, there is no limit on how many claims you can make on your multi-trip travel insurance policy. Unlike other forms of insurance, your claims history doesn’t impact the price of your premium when buying your policy, as the cost of your insurance will be determined by other premiums.

Yes, this means you won’t have to worry about taking out a new policy every time you jet off*!

If you’re travelling frequently, it’s likely no two trips will be this same. At Cover-More, we offer you the flexibility to add extra coverage to your AMT policy when you purchase it, including snow sports, cruising, and more.

If you’re a frequent traveller who takes multiple trips a year, you may find an AMT policy to be an affordable solution for protecting your travels.

Why should I buy an Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy?

An Annual Multi-Trip policy is often convenient and can provide cost-effective travel insurance.

If you’re travelling multiple times a year and you don’t want the added stress of having to take out a different travel insurance policy each time you head off on a holiday, an AMT could be a great option for you.

Yes, our Cover-More domestic and international comprehensive plans are available to purchase as AMT policies. As a Cover-More AMT policyholder, you can take as many trips as you want throughout the year up to the trip duration you choose when purchasing the plan.

Our international AMT plans allow you to choose a maximum trip duration of either 30, 45, or 60 days; our domestic AMT plans allow you to choose a maximum trip duration of either 15 or 30 days. (This means our AMT policies do not provide 12 months of cover for 365 days of continuous travel.)

Under our Cover-More AMT policies, cover is provided every time you travel further than 250 kilometres from your home or – if the distance is less than this – your trip includes at least one night of paid accommodation with an accommodation supplier or provider, up to the individual maximum trip duration noted on your Certificate of Insurance.

The best part: as an annual travel insurance policy customer, you don’t need to tell us about every single trip you plan on taking – just set off and have fun. (You do need to make sure your multi-country travel insurance policy covers the countries you’re visiting and the activities you’re participating in, though.)

Our Cover-More AMT policies are currently available to travellers of all ages.

What should I know before I buy a Cover-More Annual Multi-Trip policy?

Here are five things you need to know about our Cover-More annual travel insurance plans prior to purchase, however, we recommend you read the PDS for full details.

1. You need to choose your maximum trip duration

Your AMT policy only covers you up to the maximum trip duration you select at the time of purchase. This maximum applies to each separate trip.

For overseas trips on our international AMT plans, you can choose between 30, 45 or 60 days for each individual trip length. For trips within Australia only covered by our domestic AMT plans, you can select a maximum trip duration of either 15 or 30 days. The trip length option you choose will affect the premium you have to pay.

For example, if you choose a maximum trip duration of 60 days on your international Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, then each individual international trip you take throughout the year (and you can take as many as you want) cannot be longer than 60 days.

Keep in mind you are still protected for an unlimited number of trips during the annual period up to the duration you select, but you must return home after each one. It doesn’t allow 365 days continuous cover.

2. You need to choose your level of cover

At Cover-More, we understand each traveller is different, which is why you’re able to choose the travel insurance plan and option/s to vary your cover for different benefits that best fit your travel style and budget needs. Our range of popular options to vary your cover include cover for snow sports, riding a motorcycle or moped, and adventure activities outside of those we automatically provide cover for.

You can also increase your luggage cover limit and select the amount of cancellation cover that suits you. Remember an additional premium will apply if you vary your cover with any of the options to vary or upgrade your cover.

3. You need to select your excess level

When you buy our Cover-More annual travel insurance on one of our comprehensive international plans, we give you the option to choose the amount of excess you’ll pay should you need to make a claim.

This excess applies if you have a claim and is the first amount of a claim that we don’t pay. You can select an excess amount of either $0, $100 or $250. For a Domestic Plan, a set excess of $50 applies.

Don’t forget the excess amount is applied to each claimable event. For more details on what this means and the benefits that an excess applies to, read the PDS .

4. You need to declare any existing medical conditions

Our Cover-More plans automatically include cover for many common existing medical conditions (EMCs) including asthma, acne, high cholesterol, gout, glaucoma, and epilepsy.

Other EMCs may require an online health assessment to be completed to confirm the appropriate travel insurance coverage for you. If your condition is not listed within our online health assessment, we may not be able to cover it. We recommend you call our team on 1300 72 88 22 to ask.

For EMC policy conditions, please refer to the existing medical conditions sections in the PDS.

5. You have access to the cooling-off period

Purchasing travel insurance is an incredibly important decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

All our Cover-More customers can make use of a 21-day cooling-off period**, where we can provide you with a full refund if you choose to cancel your policy with us and you meet the criteria outlined in our PDS .

Are you ready to buy an Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy? If you travel regularly, it may end up saving you time and money in the future.

To buy an AMT policy on our Cover-More website, simply enter the dates of your first trip in the quote box. In the destinations section, make sure you put in all the destinations you plan on visiting over the next 12 months.

Unsure of where the year will take you? If you are not sure of all your destinations, select a region instead – cover then applies for travel to all countries within that region. You can also select ‘Anywhere in the world’ for worldwide travel insurance coverage.

Once this is completed, you will be taken to the Cover Summary page. Click on the tab called ‘Annual Multi-Trip plans’. Our AMT plan options will then be displayed. You can then select the coverage items that work best for you.

Don’t see the option to buy an AMT policy? Your travel requirements might be better suited to one of our other policies. Call us on 1300 72 88 22 to discuss your travel insurance options.

Step 5: Enter the traveller information.  Fill in the traveller information. This is what will appear on your certificate of insurance.

Please note: If you/a traveller has an Existing Medical Condition which is not automatically included within the policy, you/they can complete an online assessment form to tell us of your/their condition. If your/their condition is approved by us, then you can decide to buy the cover for your existing medical condition. An additional premium may apply.

Step 6: Pay for your cover.  Select your preferred payment method. Once you've paid, you will be sent your Certificate of Insurance. Your 12-months of travel cover will start from the date you selected as your departure date on the quote tool, not the date you purchased your cover.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why consider multi-trip travel insurance.

Multi-Trip Travel Insurance can be a convenient and cost-effective option if you're planning to travel multiple times within a 12-month period.

  • It can save you time and help take away the stress of having to purchase a new travel insurance policy each time you travel.
  • It might also be more affordable than purchasing multiple Single Trip insurance policies throughout the year.

You'll be able to take an unlimited number of trips provided you're travelling within your selected area of insurance 2  and each trip is not longer than the maximum trip duration 1  you've selected. So, whilst an Annual Multi-Trip policy provides 12 months of cover, it's important to understand that this does not mean you can holiday for 12 months straight. If you are looking to holiday for 365 continuous days, then a Medibank Single Trip Travel Insurance policy could be right for you.

What is the difference between Medical Only, Comprehensive and Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

Multi-Trip Insurance:  Annual Multi-Trip policies (AMT) are designed to provide comprehensive travel insurance for multiple trips taken within a 12 month period (noting that each individual trip taken must not exceed the maximum trip duration 1  as shown on the Certificate of Insurance). Medibank Travel Insurance offers an AMT option on the International Comprehensive Plan and on the Domestic Plan.

Single Trip Insurance:  A single trip insurance policy will mean that you will have cover for a single trip taken within the dates listed on the Certificate of Insurance. Medibank Travel Insurance offers single trip insurance on the International Medical Only Plan, the International Comprehensive Plan and the Domestic Plan.

What's the difference between our travel insurance plans?

  • Medical Only:  An International Medical Only Plan provides cover for overseas medical and hospital expenses 3  that occur whilst travelling. It will not provide cover for things like trip cancellation or lost luggage. Medical only cover is not available on domestic travel and can only be purchased as single trip insurance.
  • International Comprehensive:  A Medibank International Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plan provides more complete cover during your trip. It can provide cover for overseas medical and dental emergencies, 3  plus inclusions for unforeseen cancellations 6 , lost/stolen valuables 7  and more. An International Comprehensive Plan can be purchased as either a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.
  • Domestic:  A Medibank Domestic Travel Insurance Plan is designed to help protect trips within Australia. It includes cover for cancellation, amendment & delays 6 , cover for lost, stolen & damaged personal effects 7  and more. Domestic travel insurance does not include any cover for medical expenses incurred whilst travelling. A Domestic Plan can be purchased as either a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.

To understand more about the different Medibank Travel Insurance options, please visit our  compare travel insurance page  or refer to the  Combined FSG/PDS .

Does Medibank Travel Insurance include cover for COVID-19 related events?

Medibank provide cover for certain COVID-19 related scenarios, including overseas medical costs if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner while travelling. For more information on COVID-19 cover, you can visit our  COVID-19 benefits page.

How much does Multi-Trip Travel Insurance cost?

The cost of Multi-Trip Travel Insurance varies dependent on a number of factors. This can include where you are travelling to, any additional cover options that you select, if there are others on your policy, your age and any pre-existing medical conditions. Use the quote tool to find out the cost of Multi-Trip Travel Insurance.

Is Multi-Trip Travel Insurance available for seniors?

Yes. Our intention is to cover as many people as possible. However, policy prices my increase in line with your age, and if you are 70 years of age or over, the availability of the plans may vary depending on other relevant factors such as the destination, trip duration and whether the policy is a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.

Am I covered for travel within Australia with Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

You will be covered for domestic travel that is 250km or more from home, or, if less than that, your trip must include at least one-night paid accommodation booked with an accommodation supplier or provider.

Remember when selecting the zone for your policy coverage, you must choose the area which will cover all of your trips for the year. 2  Your Annual Multi-Trip Policy will provide cover for every trip in the same ‘area’, as listed above . Please note that the 20% rule will apply.

What do I list as my destination if I am unsure where I will be travelling throughout the year?

If you are unsure of where you're travelling, you can always enter 'Anywhere in the world' when quoting. This will help ensure you have cover for any destinations you choose (so long as travel sanctions aren't in effect). This does however mean that your Annual Multi-Trip policy may have a higher premium as it takes into account the fact you could travel anywhere in the world.

Alternatively you can select the area you think you'll be travelling to and if you need to increase your area of cover at a later date, then you can contact us to discuss re-issuing your policy.

How many trips can I take on my Annual Multi-Trip Policy?

There is no limit on the number of journeys you can take in the 12-month period, provided you are at least 250 kilometres from your home – or, if your trip includes at least one or more nights of paid accommodation with an accommodation supplier or provider. These trips must take place in the area you have selected, or in the included areas as part of your policy.

You must also ensure that each trip is not longer than the maximum trip duration you select when finalising your plan. 1

How long can each of my trips be if I’m covered by an Annual Multi-Trip Policy?

On Annual Multi-Trip Travel insurance policies, you can choose a maximum trip duration of 30, 45 or 60 days for international plans, and 15 or 30 days for domestic plans. This means each separate trip you take using the policy cannot exceed the duration selected.

Things you should know

1  Cover is limited to a maximum duration of up to 30, 45 or 60 days for international trips or 15 or 30 days on domestic trips depending on the duration choice you make.

2  If 20% or more of any Journey will be spent in the Americas or Africa You must nominate the area including these countries as the area of travel. This applies to Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip polices.

3  Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from the onset of the illness or injury. Medical evacuation cover subject to claim approval.

4  Limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions apply. For full details on exactly what’s covered by our COVID-19 travel insurance benefits see the  Combined FSG/PDS .

5  Limits apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

6  Conditions apply to cancellation cover. Sub-limits apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

7  Item limits apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

8  Maximum liability collectively for sections Loss of Income, Personal Liability and Accidental Death is $10,000 on the Domestic Plan and $25,000 on the International Comprehensive Plan.

9  You must take out an International Plan and add Cruise Cover if you’re travelling on a domestic or international multi-night sea or ocean cruise to have any cover for the benefits under the policy. Unless your cruise is entirely within Australia (e.g. a Kimberley Cruise which falls entirely within Australian coastal waters) in which case a Comprehensive Domestic plan may be purchased and no cruise cover variation is required.

10  Conditions and exclusions apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

Cheap annual travel insurance

Is it cheaper to buy annual travel insurance, what does annual travel insurance cover, what's not included, frequently asked questions about annual travel insurance.

Destinations

What you need to know

  • Annual travel insurance typically covers multiple trips in one year for trips up to 90 days.
  • Annual travel insurance can be cheaper than a single policy if you travel to multiple places in a year.
  • Most annual policies cover overseas medical expenses, luggage and personal effects and cancellation fees.

Cheap comprehensive: Travel Insurance Saver Annual Multi Trip

Travel insurance saver

  • It can cover you for up to 45 days per trip. The average is around 30 days.
  • It comes with COVID-19 cover. This includes unlimited medical expenses and rearrangement costs if you or someone you are travelling with catches the virus.
  • It comes with fairly high limits, most likely enough for multiple trips e.g. up to $12,000 for luggage, $10,000 for cancellations, $5,000 rental car excess insurance and unlimited travel delay expenses.
  • FastCover Traveller Saver comes with unlimited cancellation cover. Travel Insurance Saver has a $10,000 cap.
  • There are more comprehensive options, if you're willing to pay more. For example, FastCover and CoverMore have annual policies that all come with higher limits. These could be better for trips over $10,000.

Why we picked Travel Insurance Saver

Finder's insurance and innovations editor looked at 45 annual travel insurance policies available on the Finder engine and a handful of other well known brands including CoverMore and Medibank. Travel Insurance Saver offered the cheapest comprehensive policy for 5 different annual multi trips:

  • Bali, USA, New Zealand
  • Bali, Japan, New Zealand
  • Bali, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand
  • Bali, Italy, France, New Zealand
  • Bali, Thailand, New Zealand

Cheap basic: Insure4Less Annual Multi Trip Essentials

Insure4Less Travel insurance

  • It's good if you want a very cheap policy covering medical only , including if you catch COVID-19.
  • Out of 45 annual multi trip policies, it was the cheapest available on Finder.
  • It really is a bare bones policy. It only covers medical expenses. It's no help if you need to cancel, rearrange or your luggage is delayed or lost.
  • It can cover you for up to 31 days per trip. If you have a longer trip planned, you should look elsewhere.

Why we picked Insure4less

Our insurance and innovations editor picked Insure4less because it's typically the cheapest annual multi trip policy in the Finder database. Insure4less offered the cheapest basic policy for 5 different annual multi trips:

It's typically only cheaper to buy an annual travel insurance policy if you plan to go on a few big trips in the next 12 months. If you're only going away for around 2 weeks per trip, multiple single travel insurance policies are often cheaper.

For example, when we got quotes for an annual multi trip policy to multiple locations (Bali, Japan, Canada and Europe), the cheapest comprehensive policy was $399. It was $815 for multiple single travel insurance policies.

Here's a table showing the prices if you were to take out multiple single travel insurance policies, as opposed to taking out a multi trip travel insurance policy.

Tim Bennett - travel insurance

How Tim saved on his travel insurance

I saved $500 getting an annual multi-trip policy. I had two big overseas trips planned, one a ski trip, and it was cheaper to get an annual policy instead of individual cover (this was for 2 people). And now I'm covered for the rest of the year too, including on domestic trips.

Multi trip travel insurance covers all the same things as a single-trip policy. This means you can expect cover for:

  • Medical expenses including evacuation. If you get sick or injured while overseas, your policy will cover the cost of your ambulance, hospital bed, surgery fees and evacuation to the nearest hospital (or back to Australia if necessary). Most annual policies offer unlimited medical for international trips, which helps with peace of mind knowing you're covered no matter where you go.
  • Additional emergency expenses. This covers the additional travel and accommodation expenses related to emergencies outside of your control , like becoming medically unfit to travel or the unexpected death of a close relative back home. Most policies will also pay for someone in Australia to travel to you if you're hospitalised overseas.
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits. This covers your non-refundable pre-paid travel expenses and any cancellation fees if you have to cancel your trip due to unexpected events outside of your control.
  • Luggage and personal belongings. Covers the repair or replacement costs for luggage and personal items that are lost, stolen or damaged during your trip. Some policies will pay you an emergency allowance to help you purchase essential clothing and toiletries if an airline temporarily misplaces your luggage .
  • Travel delay. This pays for unexpected meal and accommodation costs when your flight or other prepaid transportation is rescheduled or delayed for a significant amount of time.
  • Rental vehicle excess insurance. This brings down the unreasonably high excess car rental companies charge if you damage one of their cars. Some policies offer this for free. Others charge extra for it.
  • Cruise and Ski cover. Some annual travel insurance policies include cruise cover and ski cover in their policies. Benefits include onboard medical expenses, missed ports, cabin confinement and more.
  • Personal liability. This pays your legal fees and penalties if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while travelling.

At first annual travel insurance might seem like a bit of an upfront cost, but if you have a couple of big trips planned in the next 12 months (it looks like many of us do – there's been a 50% increase in departures compared to this time last year) then it's often cheaper than buying multiple individual policies.

Gary Ross Hunter

Gary Ross Hunter Finder's insurance and innovations editor

All policies have a list of exclusions, which outlines what your policy won't cover and what situations will void your policy. These include if:

  • You're travelling somewhere there's a travel warning. The Australian Government issues advisories for a reason . If you choose to travel to a do not travel country and ignore these warnings, your insurance will be invalid.
  • You don't take care of your belongings. Your insurer won't pay for lost items if you weren't careful with them. This includes leaving your luggage or valuables unattended or leaving your hotel room unlocked.
  • You're taking part in extreme or dangerous activities. Most policies won't cover extreme sports or other dangerous activities such as base jumping or mountaineering.
  • You were acting recklessly. Your insurer can deny your claim if it finds you were acting recklessly at the time. This can include being drunk , being high, breaking the law or putting yourself in harm's way.
  • Illness or injury from pre-existing conditions. If you fail to disclose any pre-existing conditions , your insurer could deny medical claims if they think the new injury or illness is related.
  • You're pregnant. Most policies will not cover childbirth at all and they'll stop covering you if you're pregnant at around 30 weeks. However, they will cover all unrelated medical conditions like a broken wrist for the duration of the trip.

What is annual multi trip travel insurance.

Annual multi trip travel insurance is a type of travel insurance policy that covers multiple trips over a 12 month period. It's also known as a multi-trip policy. It's made for people who go abroad more than once a year and can sometimes be cheaper and more convenient than taking out multiple single trip policies every time you travel.

Can I get travel insurance for 12 months?

Yes. Multi trip policies can give you cover for an unlimited number of trips in a year. It can sometimes be cheaper than buying multiple policies in a year and it's convenient as you don't have to get a new travel insurance policy every time you head overseas.

How much is travel insurance in Australia?

Travel insurance ranges from around $5 to $20 per day but prices can vary significantly depending on the length of your trip and where you travel. On average, a basic policy for a one week trip could cost between $30 and $150. It often becomes better value for money to take out annual travel insurance if you have more than 2 of 3 big trips planned in a year.

I am going to multiple destinations on my next trip. Do I need an annual multi-trip policy?

No. You can get cover for multiple destinations on a standard single-trip policy, as long as all the destinations are part of one overall journey. There are long term travel insurance policies that cover single trip journeys of up to 540 days . You generally only need the annual policy if you will be returning to Australia between trips.

I mostly travel for business. Is there any point to buying an annual policy?

For sure. Business cover is usually included in an annual frequent travel insurance policy, which means it doesn't matter whether you are travelling for business or going on a holiday.

However, insurers usually won't pay any medical bills that are already covered by your employer's workers compensation policy. Some policies will also exclude manual labour from cover.

Can I get annual travel insurance for more than 90 days?

Just barely. The longest max-trip duration we've seen is 93 days from Travel Insuranz and Insure4less. If you're taking a single trip that's longer than that, you'll need to get a separate single trip policy for that trip.

if I get a 12mth insurance does it have to start from 1st Jan to December as I have a trip this year and one early next year.

Avatar

Thanks for your message – no, an annual multi-trip policy isn’t restricted to a calendar year. But be sure to check the policy wording, and look out for the maximum length of each journey. This will be shown on your certificate of insurance. Do reach out to the insurer directly if you’ve any questions about how your policy works.

Best wishes,

Is it possible to get a 12-month insurance policy?

Avatar

Yes, it is possible.

In this case, an annual travel insurance policy would be a good choice. It is a type of policy that can cover you for multiple trips within a 12 month period.

You can check the table above to check your annual travel insurance options. Be sure to read through the terms and conditions before making a final decision.

Website review and travel remediation

Choose what suits your needs, single cover, family plan, ready to get started, frequently asked questions.

Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.

If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.

We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.

Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.

Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.

The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.

The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.

If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.

It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:

  • You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.

You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.

Allianz Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance plans – Basic , Comprehensive , Domestic , Non-Medical or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance . You can see more detailed information on our Compare Cover Options page .

Travel Insurance For Vietnam: Everything You Need To Know

Updated: Apr 26, 2024, 11:14am

Table of Contents

Do australians need travel insurance for vietnam, what does travel insurance for vietnam cover, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Vietnam is an increasingly popular travel destination for Australians, with the country even hoping to encourage more Aussies to visit by potentially waiving visa requirements in due time.

The Southeast Asian country is set to be high on the list for Aussies going overseas in 2024. The number of Australian tourists in Vietnam now exceeds pre-pandemic levels: more than 317,000 Australians visited Vietnam in 2019 , while there were 390,000 Aussie visitors in 2023.

Plus, as more and more flights become available, such as low-cost carrier Vietjet Air launching a direct service between Hanoi and Melbourne earlier this year, getting to Vietnam is becoming easier for Australians.

If the direct flights, fascinating history, vast scenery and delicious food aren’t enough to convince Australian travellers, the cost may be. Vietnam is considered one of the cheapest travel destinations in the world for Australian tourists due to our strong conversion rate against the Vietnamese Dong and the nation’s low cost of living in comparison to our own.

And while cheap thrills may be what you’re after on your vacation, it’s important not to skimp on the necessities that may cost that little bit extra—such as travel insurance. This guide outlines what you need to know regarding travel insurance in Vietnam.

Investing in travel insurance is a good idea for any overseas trip. Travel insurance policies can help protect you from having to dive deep into your pockets, with many offering unlimited medical treatment while abroad and cancellation cover for your trip should the unexpected occur.

Travel insurance is not just handy for medical purposes or travel changes, either. Your personal items can be covered, should any baggage go missing or an important item be stolen—which, unfortunately, often occurs in Vietnam.

Smarttraveller warns Australians to be alert at all times in Vietnam, considering petty theft–including bag slashing–is common in tourist areas and crowded places, especially during holiday times. Snatch-and-grab theft by thieves on motorcycles is also common, the website states.

Like most international travel insurance policies, you will be able to find basic coverage for your trip to Vietnam, or choose to opt for a more comprehensive, albeit more expensive, policy.

While a basic policy will often cover medical expenses and lost luggage,a comprehensive policy includes a lot more. Most basic policies also likely won’t offer compensation for travel delays, stolen cash, accidental death and more.

Additionally, if you are going on a trip to multiple countries within the year, it may be worth opting for an ‘annual multi trip’ insurance instead—making sure that there are no exclusions to the regions you are wishing to visit.

Visa Requirements For Australians Travelling to Vietnam

You’ll still be allowed to travel to Vietnam if you don’t invest in travel insurance, but you do so at your own risk—and, as stated, it is highly advised to have a travel insurance policy for any overseas trip.

However, what you cannot do is enter Vietnam as an Australian tourist without a tourist visa. While Vietnam will grant Australian citizens visas on arrival, applying for one online is much easier.

A tourist visa costs under $100 AUD; however the exact price depends on your length of stay.

The Vietnamese government may consider waiving visas for Australian citizens, especially since many other SEA countries have done so such as Indonesia and Thailand .

However, at the time of writing, Forbes Advisor Australia has confirmed that Australian citizens must still obtain a visa to visit Vietnam for tourism purposes.

The exact inclusions of your travel insurance will be dependent on your personal policy and the provider.

However, generally speaking, you can expect a travel insurance policy for Vietnam to offer some level of cover for:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost, damaged or stolen luggage;
  • Travel cancellations or delays ;
  • Personal liability;
  • Credit card fraud;
  • Covid-19 expenses;

If you are partaking in certain sports and activities, you will need to make sure that you choose a policy that covers them. You’ll also need to make sure that your policy covers any pre-existing medical conditions as well.

Plus, if you are travelling with valuables, you may wish to opt for a policy that lets you increase the protection cover on your items.

Ultimately, you need to consider what your trip consists of, what you will be taking with you, and your physical health to establish what policies would be appropriate for you.

From there, you can compare quotes of different policies and providers to ensure you have the optimal—yet affordable—cover for your trip to Vietnam.

Does Travel Insurance Cover The Ha-Giang Loop?

Considered one of the most scenic motorcycle routes in the world, the Ha-Giang Loop is a popular tourist activity in Vietnam for adventurous travellers. If the Ha-Giang Loop is one of your goals, you’ll need to make sure you have travel insurance that covers motorcycling.

Occasionally a policy may include this as one of their included ‘sports and activities’, but it is more often the case that you will need to purchase an additional ‘adventure pack’ that is either specific to, or includes, motorsports.

Even so, when purchasing an additional pack to cover motorbikes, you need to be cautious of the conditions. For example, some policies will only cover motorcycle riding if the bike you are riding has an engine under a certain size.

Often, coverage will cease and claims won’t be accepted if you haven’t been wearing the correct safety equipment such as boots and a helmet, or have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

What Does Travel Insurance Exclude?

Your travel insurance policy may exclude some activities that you wish to partake in, unless you can opt-in to purchase an additional adventure pack as explained above in regards to motorbike riding.

Just like with the inclusions of a policy, the exclusions depend on what type of policy you choose, and what provider you go with.

Commonly, however, you won’t be covered for instances where you:

  • Break the law;
  • Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Partake in an excluded activity;
  • Receive medical treatment for a pre-existing condition that was not disclosed;
  • Travel to a ‘Do Not Travel’ destination as outlined by Smarttraveller.

As always, it is essential to read the product disclosure statement (PDS) of your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what you will and won’t be covered for while overseas.

Do I need a visa to travel to Vietnam?

Yes, as of April 2024, Australian tourists still need a visa to travel to Vietnam. This visa can be obtained on arrival, or purchased online prior to travel. The visa takes approximately three days to process online, and the cost depends on how long you intend to stay in the country.

Does international travel insurance cover Covid-19?

Many comprehensive travel insurance policies now cover Covid-19, including medical conditions related to Covid-19 or trip cancellations due to a Covid-19 diagnosis. However, it is not guaranteed that all policies will. It’s important to check your policy’s PDS carefully to understand what it will and will not cover in regards to Covid-19 for both you and your travelling companions.

How much does travel insurance cost for Vietnam?

The cost of your travel insurance for a trip to Vietnam will depend on your age, your health, the activities you wish to partake in, and the length of your stay.

For example, for a 34 year old with no pre-existing medical conditions travelling to Vietnam for two weeks, a policy from some of our top choices for comprehensive travel insurance would cost around $130 (based on quotes from Cover-More , 1Cover , and Fast Cover ).

The prices of these quotes would change depending on a chosen excess, cancellation cover, and any additional coverage options you may choose to purchase such as adventure packs or cruise cover.
