Next, modern Shanghai dazzled! Its skyline towers and bustling maglev train representing China’s innovation blew my mind. At the aquarium, sea creatures put on a wonderful underwater show. And a cooking class there even let me whip up map tofu—such a highlight adding a personal touch. Shanghai reminded me how diverse cultures connect through shared passions.

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

While China welcomed us like family, saying goodbye posed bittersweet tears as all wonderful friends found in foreign lands do. I’ll forever feel pride in being able to learn from this rich country first-hand at a young age. Curiosity grows for other corners of the earth now, yet China holds an unforgettable corner of my heart for igniting wanderlust within. On to future education revelations awaits!

Conclusion: Adventures Ahead

In closing, China won my curious soul on this voyage abroad. Its blend of history, beauty, and welcoming people proves how the global community thrives through the exchange. I can’t wait to share all I’ve learned and find new connections wherever farther travels may lead with an open mind and spirit of infinite possibility. My beautiful experience in China

My journey in China began three years ago when I got enrolled to UCAS to pursue a master degree in Microbiology. Though happy to receive my scholarship in one of the world's famous institution (Wuhan Institute of Virology 中国科学院武汉病毒研究所), I was scared to travel to a new country as I had no prior travel experience. I wondered how I would cope with the culture, environment, food, and language.

Albeit all my doubts, my curiosity got the best of me and in September 2017, I found myself in Beijing ready to face my fears. On arrival, I remember to find the weather rather very hot than what I had anticipated. This was a new experience and surprisingly, I was happy rather than saddened by the quick atmospheric change. I arrived late but lucky enough found someone to guide me to find a Taxi to ferry me to school. This was the first of many acts of kindness I got to experience.

Once I arrive at my school, despite the language barrier, the staff were more than willing to help and guided me to my room. I henceforth began my studies and started to learn a bit of Chinese for survival. In Beijing, students and staff were very cooperative and made me adapt fast to the environment, food, language, and culture. I remember feeling very warm and lucky to have adapted fast.

I marveled at many things in China, among them, the beauty of the infrastructure, the amazing and diverse food. But amongst all, the best was the ability to travel here and there safely. China has a very sufficient transport system and elaborate guide that could help anyone get to any place easily. During my one year stay in Beijing, I visited many beautiful sites among them the Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall.

Post a year, I had to travel to Wuhan for my laboratory studies at Wuhan Institute of Virology. At this time, I was fully prepared as I learnt much in Beijing. Once in Wuhan, I found the culture there a little bit different from Beijing. In Wuhan, the common food was noodles and it was very delicious. A delicacy I enjoy to date. I also got to visit many beautiful sites in Wuhan and watched the beautiful city grow every day.

I enjoyed my stay in Wuhan until the day that an outbreak struck the city. At this point, the city came to a standstill and no one was required to move. Lucky enough, as a trained virologist, I took this chance to work in the frontlines against the new virus that had struck the city. I remember working nights and days sometimes with little sleep just to make a difference. In really thank the government of Wuhan and China for their strong support and stand to make the city and country safe. I also thank the Wuhan Institute of Virology, CAS for the amazing education and training they offered me. This helped me work on the front line and help diagnose patients affected by the outbreak. From this outbreak, it just proved that the future of china is bright as they managed to contain an outbreak that has plagued many other parts of the world. As the epidemic ended, I got awarded the best student international student of Wuhan Institute of Virology and got a PHD offer. Now from a master's student of 2017, I am a 2021 PhD student in china.

If someone asks me what the future holds, I would say "endless opportunities await those who dare to chase them". I do be live that China is the next biggest country and anyone who has experienced it would be glad they did. CHINA is the gateway to the future.

I am a current PhD student studying Microbiology at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. I studied my undergraduate in Kenya and passed highly to get awarded a masters scholarship in China at the same institution. In my four year and continued stay in China, I have made tremendous progress and grown both academically and socially. I have achieved many awards including some due to my efforts in fighting the COVID-19 disease. These news reports may help summarize my progress.

My beautiful encounter with China

“Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles.” — A saying by Dong Qichang, a painter of Ming Dynasty (1368—1644), has always inspired me. In my life, I have read many stories and traveled to many places.

However, China, this lovely and beautiful country, is the one which truly attracts me and which I forge an indissoluble bond with. In my early acquaintance with China, I held deep curiosity toward this country; when I got to more about China, I grew more fondness of her; and when I came back to China after years of departing, I got greatly amazed by her fast development. All those experiences with China are lying quietly at the bottom of my heart and encouraging me on my way forward.

First Acquaintance—Inspired byMy Grandfather and Longing for China

When did I hear about China for the first time and when did I become fond of China? It all traced back to the summer when I was five.

In the July when I was five, it was so hot that birds seemed hiding themselves in nowhere. Grasses and trees were hanging their heads low.

Cicadas were shrilling loudly among trees. It seemed everything was crying “hot” and so was I. Early in the morning one day, my grandpa, who had retired for several years, put on his glorious military uniforms out of no reason, held my hands and took me to “Sino — Korean Friendship Tower”.

“My kid, do you see the tower? You must remember all those people lying beneath this tower are our kinsmen and our brothers. You should never forget them,” he said. I was confused by what my grandpa said and asked him who they were.

After returning home, my grandpa told me that under the tower were martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteers who had been fighting shoulder by shoulder with North Korean people during our national liberation war. After that, China began to enter my mind. I grew gradually deep interested in China and my story with China started.

Getting to Know China—Tongue Tip Savoring & Ear Echoing

Like a colorful shining box that is full of pearls, childhood is the unforgettable memory in one’s life.We became to cherish the memories with time.

Memory is like a ship, which carries me back to the city Shenyang in Northeast China’s Liaoning province, where I spent my childhood. I learned Chinese and Chinese culture in my primary school and I also traveled across all the three provinces in Northeast China. I became deeply enchanted by the rich and colorful Chinese culture and came to understand more. Chinese food, folklore and costumes were especially amazing to me.

When travelling across the three northeastern provinces, I tried almost every local delicacy, such as chicken stewed with mushrooms, pork stewed with bean or sweet potato noodles, the sauce and sweet fried pork, local three mixed vegetables and Harbin Red Sausage.

I also tried local cuisines from other provinces, such as Yuxiang Shredded Pork (Sautéed in Spicy Garlic Sauce), Kung Pao Chicken, Chongqing Hotpot, Chongqing Style Boiled Duck Blood Curd and fermented bean curd.

Traditional Chinese festival food is also very delicious, each with their own unique flavor, such as zongzi (wrapped rice dumpling) for the Dragon Boat Festival, moon cake for the Mid-Autumn Festival and tangyuan (sticky rice dumpling) for the Lantern Festival. The traditional Chinese food is not only pleasing to eyes, noses and tongues, but also pleasing to ears with their own legendary stories.

Take the moon cake as an example. In the Yuan Dynasty, the civil people could not bear the cruelty and tyranny of the ruling class and rose up fighting against them. Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty, decided to unite all forces and start a revolt. However, armies of the emperor were search for them so tightly that message delivery became very hard. Then Liu Bowen, the counselor of Zhu, came out with a wonderful idea.

He asked his fellowmen to wrap a slip of paper written with the message “revolt on August 15” into cakes and send the food to other revolt armies. On August 15 when the planned date arrived, all revolt armies staged revolts and echoed each other.

They fought against the Yuan army and defeated them in a full victory. In memory of the revolt, Zhu asked his soldiers to celebrate this day with civil people on August 15 and made moon cakes to reward his fellowmen. After that, the tradition of having moon cakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival was spread.

Now moon cakes have become more delicate with great variety in styles and flavors, fully satisfying to the demanding tongues of modern people. Not only moon cakes but all festival food has fascinating stories behind them.

This is one of the greatest charms of Chinese food culture.

Besides food, I also like traditional Chinese folklore and costumes. In the traditional folklore, I hear chanting and echoing across thousands of years. In traditional Chinese costumes, I see the harmony of colors and delicacy of Chinese craftsmen. I was greatly enchanted by the experience and enjoyed learning Chinese and Chinese culture even after I went back to my own country.

Admiring—Fast Development with Multitudes of Talents

An old Korean saying says, “The world changes radically every decade.” Time flies! I came back to China six years later after I had returned to my own country. China has undergone quite a change in the past six years.

High-speed trains, online shopping and mobile payment has been widely spread in China,  which makes daily life very convenient. The economic development of China is so rapid that every aspect of daily life such as clothes, food, accommodation  and transportation is filled with miracles created by “Chinese Speed”.

Besides the amazing economic development, I also admire the courage and solidarity of Chinese people when they are facing emergency. The COVID- 19 pandemic hit the world seriously in January 2020. Chinese people in concerted efforts with the CPC have won a great victory in this unexpected breathtaking war against the pandemic.

I witnessed this heart-touching fight during the pandemic, heard great breakthrough news from science and research frontiers and got to know a large number of “heroes” who were actually ordinary people from all walks of life.

From those inspiring or moving stories of the ordinary people, I realized the great powers of Chinese people with their concerted efforts and indomitable spirits. The year of 2021 is the 100th anniversary of the CPC. I firmly believe that China, with its great party and people, will inherit and carry on its “Chinese Spirit”, and flourish.

If life is a book, there should be more splendid details; if life is a song, there should be more soaring rhythm; if life is a painting, there should be more pleasant colors.

The journey of life is long and colorful. Fortunately, with my grandpa holding my hands, I encountered China. I gradually get to know and be in love with China with my own eyes, ears, tongue and soul.

The Chinese red has become the unique color in my life’s journey. Home is where the heart is. Inspired by this love, I will continue my story with China, and I believe the truth, goodness and beauty of China will also be carried on till forever.

Personal Narrative: China

One day, my mom and dad told us that we were going to travel to China in the summer. The day before the trip, both Daniel and I were very excited. We packed our suitcases and went to sleep earlier than usual because our flight was early in the morning. However, I lay in bed, unable to sleep because I was so thrilled. In the morning, it was hard to get out of bed because I was so tired, but after breakfast, I was full of energy again. When we got to the airport, my parents checked in our flight, and we headed to security check. After all the complications were dealt with, we waited until we were allowed to board. Finally, we got on our flight and took off. Although we were excited to go to China, after 7 hours on the plane, Daniel and I could hardly stand it anymore even though there were still 5 hours left. When we finally landed in Shanghai, we hailed a taxi to the hotel. As we drove through the city, I realized that Shanghai was different from Saratoga: everywhere, people bustled around and traffic was very heavy. We arrived at the hotel soon, ready to collapse and sleep. Since we were all very tired from the long flight, we rested in the hotel room for the rest of the day.

The next day, we visited the Bund. Visiting the Bund was one of my favorite parts of my trip. Although it was crowded both day and night, it was still fun to explore the streets of Downtown Shanghai. Lining the streets, many shops had their doors open, welcoming people in. Inside the clothing stores, bright colors glowed on the clothing racks, while young women who worked in the shops yelled out their deals to the passersby on the streets. Teddy bears, toy automobiles, and dolls in toy stores caught the children’s attention. Jewelry stores shimmered with necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. While walking down the streets, I smelled the sweet and sour aroma of Shanghai cuisine. Tall skyscrapers towered over me, some so tall that their tops were covered by clouds. As we wandered around the Bund, the sun slowly set behind us. Once it was dark, all the lights turned on and it was almost as if the whole city was glowing. It was exciting to walk down the street and see sights I couldn’t see in America.

Strolling through the Bund during the day was fun, but I also enjoyed going on the night cruise. As the cruise sailed through the Yellow River, everyone on board got a chance to see the lights of Shanghai. The night cruise was also cooler than the day, making it much more relaxing. On the cruise, I could see people walking on the streets and the yellow streaks as the taxis passed by. Since Shanghai is a very busy city, it was very loud. On the river, I could still hear the loud horns of cars on the crowded streets. Mobs of people crossed the streets, everybody yelling and talking to each other. Even though the water of the Yellow River was a murky brown, I could still see the reflection of the moon and the tall buildings. Going on the night cruise was a great way of experiencing another side of the city.

One day, we planned to go to Chongqing, another city in China. At the train station, my dad asked the ticket salesman, “Hi, I’d like to get tickets to Chongqing for 4 people, 2 kids and 2 adults.” The salesman typed something into the computer and replied, “Sorry, we’re all sold out.”

Confused, my dad asks, “Do you have any other times today?”

“I’m afraid not.”

Listening to their conversation, Daniel and I were greatly puzzled. “What! How can tickets be all sold out? It’s only 8 in the morning!” my dad told my mom. After saying thanks, my family and I walked out of the train station and headed to another one. We arrived at the second train station after 45 minutes in the cramped taxi. At the ticket window, my dad asked again, “Hi, are there any tickets to Chongqing for today?”

“No, we’re all sold out,” the salesman told us again. Frustrated, we gave up and headed back to the hotel. Later, we found out that there was a special event and many people wanted to go to our destination, so tickets were selling quick. We were all disappointed, but to cheer us up, my dad told us, “We’ll try again tomorrow.”

The next day, we headed back to the train station. My dad asked the salesman again, “Are there any tickets to Chongqing today for 2 kids and 2 adults.” While he tried to find tickets, my family and I stood there, anxiously waiting for our tickets. “Yes, we do have tickets,” the salesman said and handed us our tickets. Relief washed over us as we headed out the door. “Finally,” commented my brother, Daniel.

One reason why I love going to China is because I get to visit my grandparents. Visiting my grandparents is very exciting because I only get to see them once a year. Both my grandma and grandpa are two amazing people who always make us smile. My grandpa is a kind man who has a bald head with a few pieces of white hair. He loves to read and always cooks the best food. My grandpa also likes to drink green tea at home and is very cheerful, always talking to us. Not only is he a very jolly man, my grandpa is very caring towards others too. My grandma is also very sympathetic. She has short white hair cut just above her ear and always makes sure that we feel comfortable at her house. My grandma loves aromatic flowers and Chinese music. She likes to talk with my brother and me, asking us how we do in school and so on. Both my grandma and grandpa like to interact with other people, and they are always talking with my family, making the house seem a little bit more welcoming. As we talked and caught up on life, my brother, Daniel, and I walked around, glad to be in a familiar place. Dinnertime neared, and I smelled the smells of my favorite foods being cooked: Chinese brown sugar cookies and chicken wings cooked with vinegar and spicy pepper. We spent a few days visiting my grandparents before heading off to visit my aunt and uncle.

I love visiting my aunt because she always makes me laugh by telling funny stories about my mom when she was little, to which my mom responds by saying they’re not true. My uncle is also amusing because he talks with a funny accent on purpose in order to entertain us. When we were visiting my aunt, she took us to the panda museum one day. Going to the museum was very exciting because I had never seen pandas before. We walked around, looking at all the different pandas: the black and white ones, red pandas, and even baby pandas. I liked the red pandas because they were more active and playful as they ran around chasing each other. The black and white ones just sat on the ground of in trees, eating sticks of bamboo. I even saw a peacock walking around with its bright blue and green feathers behind it. There was also a lake with swans and koi fish, which Daniel and I fed with pieces of bread. It was really funny watching the swans fight over a little piece of bread. After the swans ate all our bread, we went to the panda nursery. I didn’t really enjoy looking at the newborn pandas, but watching the 1-year old pandas climb around was very entertaining. Filled with energy, they climbed all over the trees while the older pandas just sat there and slept. The panda museum was definitely one of the highlights in my trip to China. When our stay with my aunt and uncle came to an end, my family and I were sad, but we promised to visit again next year.

After my family and I visited my aunt and uncle, we went back to Shanghai for a few more days. We tried to enjoy the last few days of our trip. While there, we wandered around for the last time before heading back to America. My family and I also visited my grandma one more time before saying goodbye. We went to the Bund and gazed at the stars and lights again because the sights in Shanghai are different from the ones in Saratoga. On the last day of the trip, we started packing all our belongings, getting ready to go home. However, the next morning, it was time to face the fact that we had to go home. Sadly, we drove to the airport, wishing that we could stay in China longer.

We arrived at the airport and went to go check into our flight. After a few hours, we started to board the airplane. However, the flight was an uncomfortable and unbearable one, and I did not have the appetite to eat any of the food provided for me. Even though the flight was shorter than the first, it was still very exhausting. Finally, after 11 long hours, we arrived at SFO, glad to be home. As we arrived home, I thought about my relatives in China. They were so kind to me when I was there, and I was already starting to miss them. There was no doubt that next year I would go back to visit them.

China's cultural and historical attractions are good for a visit all year round. Things to do in Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai are seldom affected by the seasons.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are generally the most comfortable and recommended times for a China tour. They are neither too hot nor too cold, but fall is generally drier and warmer than spring.

A more ideal travel time for you could be March and early April or September when there are smaller crowds, favorable prices, and still good weather.

China is a good summer holiday destination too. There are not many rainy days in summer. It rarely rains continuously for a whole day, with rain coming in less and less frequent downpours as the summer draws on.

It can get a little hot in summer, but air conditioning and expert arrangements would help you avoid the heat as much as possible.

Traveling in China is not very expensive. The biggest cost could be international airfares. The cost of airfares from the US or Europe to China varies a lot depending on when you fly and which airline you use, from around US$1,200 to US$3,000 for an economy round trip.

The peak tourist times in China fall on the first weeks of May and October (China's two golden weeks), the summer holidays, and the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The biggest price difference between the off and peak seasons is in the price of hotels and airfares. Prices in peak season can go up by 50 to 100%.

A Trip to China

Indeed, my trip to China was a very illuminative and good experience that left other travellers yearning for more. For one travel to China from the United States, nothing much is actually involved after checking the relevant aspects of the weather and taking any necessary precautions. In this regard, several airlines are available in the United States which operates direct flights to Shanghai. I used Cathay Pacific in this trip considering that the airline offered relatively proper passenger treatment compared to other airlines in the city. I had a pleasant experience with this airline. Shanghai is one of the bustling metropolises that is effectively inundated with a very rich heritage, which truly impress travellers. Typically for most of the Chinese cities, culture plays significant role in the history and affairs of this financial center. Since the trip started on 1st May 2012, one week in Shanghai offered me sufficient time to explore the city and learn about its history and culture apart from enjoying its beautiful sceneries.

Stepping in China was both exciting and overwhelming. The first thing I noticed stepping out of the airport was the weather, it was hot and humid, something that I have never experienced. Several taxi cabs were available at the airport which charged modest fares to the various guestrooms around the city. As it is one of the largest cities in China, accommodation in Shanghai is generally much expensive, unlike most of the cities in the United States. Apart from taxi cabs, the city has a number of public transport facilities that can effectively serve the travellers in the city. They include trolleybuses and the rapidly expanding metro system that covers most parts of the city. From the airport to the hotel I was staying wet and sticky all over with sweat. I was not certain whether it was from the heat or the excitement. It did not matter at that point; I was in China, one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

My perception of China was based on Chinatown in Manhattan. There were similarities with the building structure and the food, the crowds as well was something that I found fascinating. Apart from the language barrier that did not bother me much, I found out that China town was not all that different from America. Some of the things I found fascinating include, reading the children bed time stories, in fact, like America’s story has something for the child to learn. The Chinese also love their country and their culture and do strive to make the country better for them and their children. Most of the things they did were almost similar to what we did back at home. The time to eat, the number of meals in a day, and the time they go to work and how they run their day to day life were not different.

Most of the Chinese cities offer varieties of accommodation services that can effectively suite any traveller to the cities. Some of the hotels operate as chains of other international hotels in other cities across the world. In this regard, the travellers will have the opportunity to enjoy the comfort of the city while experiencing the best opportunities. In terms of food in the Chinese cites the travellers will have the opportunities to experience the true taste of Chinese cuisine, which certainly offers a lot of variety. Fish, crab and chicken are in much abundance in the city of Shanghai. In America, anybody might really have a lot of challenges in enjoying some of this food. However, the huge variety of food in the city will certainly make anybody feel at home. In this regard, such food as oysters and seaweed offers a lot of delicacies.

Some of the things that were not similar include their eating habits. For example, they allow people to smoke while eating. I found this strange because even in public places, they do not prohibit people from smoking. They place the dish on a central place at the table, and people serve the amount they want into their plates. Families are treated as sacred; no one can abuse or misuse another person’s family. Despite this, they live together as one large family taking care of each other. Respect has been emphasized in China, the young respect the old, and the women respect their husbands. Even the way they salute each other differs from the old to the young.

In Chinatown, they do not judge or evaluate people by their wealth or poverty, strength or weaknesses. They believe that God was the one who provided for them, and they should be thankful of what they have and share with those who are less fortunate. They also hold their ancestors close to their hearts and believe that they protect them wherever they are. I admired tourist attraction sites where my breath was taken away by the walls of the Forbidden City, and I can never forget walking at the top of the great wall.

Chinese people are known for showing off especially to their hometown. Showing off what one has achieved is part of their tradition. They also love glorification and being on top of the rest. An example of an ancient tradition is someone returning to their hometown or even their own house wearing “golden clothes.” Chinese people detach from the rest once they think they have enough to sustain them. They do not like sharing information that might make other people more superior to them. I found this quite the opposite. While, in China, the people I met were down to earth and did not seem to be looking for praises. In fact, they were humble and assisted wherever they could. No one seemed to search for power of praise.

Pictures do no justice to the magnitude of the Great Wall of China. As we approached the wall on our first day of hiking, I realized that it was actually much larger than I had ever anticipated. It snakes over rough terrain traversing mountains at incredibly steep inclines. I had always envisioned the path at the top of the wall to be a smooth walking surface. But, to my surprise, it actually consists of enormous steps that climb the precipitous mountains. The steps appear to have been constructed for giants, and it is extremely difficult to navigate them.

As I reached the top of a section of the wall, I had to stop and appreciate the spectacular view. When I turned to descend the way I had come, I was overcome with feelings of vertigo. What had appeared a sharp incline on the way up seemed a 90-degree drop on the way down. My initial instinct was to climb down backward in order to placate my fears. But, I did not want to seem foolish, so I simply sat down every few steps and took in the magnificent scenery. The soldiers that had to scale those menacing steps day after day to man the watchtowers must have been a fearsome crew.

After visiting the Great Wall of China, the architectural wonders remain a mystery to me. Somehow, the engineering feats of the twentieth century pale in comparison to the ancient construction of the Great Wall of China. Though I knew the Great Wall would be a huge structure, I never imagined that it would be so wide. Walking in the clouds along with a towering highway thousands of years old is an experience that I will never forget. The second day of our adventure, we visited the Great Wall near Beijing.

There were several tourists and vendors along the route and many different languages filled the air. After departing the Great Wall, we ate a traditional Chinese lunch with chopsticks and drove the short distance to the Ming Tombs nearby. These ancient tombs mark the resting place of thirteen dynasty emperors. Only one of the Ming tombs has been unearthed. The rest of the tombs have remained untouched for centuries. The peaceful atmosphere at the Ming Tombs was a welcome contrast to the sometimes-noisy tourists at the Great Wall.

Our visit to the tombs was a nice ending to our Beijing adventure. When reflecting on a favorite vacation, most people recall trips to popular beaches, tropical resorts, or famous commercial tourist attractions. But, I have always possessed a great appreciation for history and architecture. And, I am always impressed by the structures ancient people were able to erect without the aid of modern technologies we take for granted today. I enjoy hiking, fresh air, and communing with nature, so this trip was right up my alley.

And aside from the historical significance of the Great Wall of China, it is located on stunning mountaintops and makes for an incredible visual experience. I have been to many places throughout my life, but my visit to the Great Wall of China was by far the best vacation I have ever taken.
