Illinois Office of Tourism Celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week with Sustainable Getaways and

New trip ideas feature upcycled lodging, farm dinner experiences, electric vehicle road trips, bike trails and outdoor adventures across Illinois

CHICAGO - This year, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism (IOT) is proud to celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) from May 7-13 with a special focus on sustainable travel across the state. The theme for this year’s NTTW is "Travel Forward,” emphasizing the essential role travel plays in promoting economic growth, creating job opportunities and uniting millions of Americans. To kick off NTTW, IOT is releasing a roundup of new eco-friendly summer trip ideas across the state to build excitement in advance of the upcoming summer travel season.

More than 97 million visitors spent $32.2 billion across the state in 2021, boosting economic development and supporting nearly 390,000 jobs in the industry, according to the latest data available from Tourism Economics.

"Illinois is brimming with a unique blend of natural wonders, cultural landmarks, and iconic attractions that never cease to amaze visitors. From the towering skyscrapers of Chicago to the rolling hills of the Shawnee National Forest, Illinois offers an unparalleled experience,”  said Kristin Richards, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) . “We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the country and the world to experience all the incredible destinations Illinois has to offer this summer and throughout the year.”

New data from Longwoods International shows that the Office of Tourism’s award-winning  ‘Middle of Everything’ campaign , launched in 2022, led to an additional 2 million trips which equated to an additional $1 billion spent in Illinois hotels, restaurants, small businesses and attractions. Every $1 spent on the campaign resulted in $91 in visitor spending and generated $10 in state and local tax revenue – an enormous return on investment and significant boost to the state’s economy.

With 90% of travelers looking for eco-friendly and sustainable options when traveling, 1  the Office of Tourism is releasing new eco-conscious summer getaways across the state.

Travel is essential to San Diego's regional economy

San Diego's travel and tourism industry is crucial to our region's economic health and future prosperity. As the second-largest sector, it has a significant influence throughout the region, benefiting businesses and residents, and improving our quality of life.

In 2022, San Diego welcomed more than 28 million visitors, which led to $13.6 billion in visitor spending across our hotels, renowned cultural institutions, world-class attractions, small businesses, restaurants and bars. And through visitor spending, the tourism industry generated more than $360 million towards San Diego County's Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) revenues, supporting critical local services such as police, fire, and emergency responders. Moreover, the revenue generated helps lower the average tax burden on households in the county by a few hundred dollars annually.

The tourism industry is also a major employer in San Diego County. Last year, the industry witnessed a resurgence in job opportunities, with 214,000 San Diegans employed in tourism-related professional fields. And with international travel resuming, we expect the sector to continue its positive growth and present a wide range of career opportunities for locals.

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of National Travel and Tourism Week, we recognize the present and future impact of travel in San Diego and take great pride in acknowledging all the positive contributions the travel and tourism industry makes to our city.

The Importance of Business and International Travel

Throughout San Diego County in 2022, business travel rebounded to 85% of pre-pandemic levels, and international inbound spending continued to recover strongly. Current forecasts see a full and sustained recovery in business travel some time in the second half of 2024 while international is expected to fully recover by 2025..

The Power of Tourism

Each year we join the U.S. Travel Association in celebrating National Travel & Tourism Week (NTTW) , as tourism professionals in the United States unite to celebrate the value travel holds for the economy, businesses and travel-related employment across the nation. We invite you to learn more about why travel matters to San Diego on this site and how you can become an advocate for the industry in your local community.

May 7-13, 2023.

National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual industry tradition celebrating the value travel holds for our economy, businesses, personal well-being and more.  #TravelForward

Established in 1983 by a congressional resolution, National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual tradition celebrating the U.S. travel community and travel’s essential role in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, inspiring new businesses and elevating the quality of life for residents. This year marks the 40 th anniversary of NTTW and is the first full week of May from May 7-13.

The travel industry has a profound economic impact on the United States. Prior to the pandemic the U.S. travel industry generated $2.6 trillion in economic impact. The travel industry supports nearly 20 million American jobs and is a critical component to the economic vitality of communities in every state.

Here in Washtenaw County, 6.1 million people visited our local communities in 2021 and spent $899 million dollars shopping, dining, staying overnight and exploring our communities. Visitor spending supported 6,800 jobs in Washtenaw County and generated $33.1 million in state and local tax revenue to provide public essential services that our residents rely on, such as K-12 education, local libraries, parks, road services, public safety and more.

Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan (TICOM) and Pure Michigan will celebrate the collective strength of Michigan's travel industry during National Travel and Tourism Week with a private press event kick-off in Ann Arbor. Pure Michigan is also promoting special offers and packages during NTTW. Additionally, Pure Michigan is livestreaming interviews with travel industry leaders in Washtenaw County and across Michigan throughout the week. National Travel & Tourism Week 2023

  • Press Release

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the annual industry celebration!

Albion, NY | May 9, 2023 — This week is National Travel and Tourism Week , (NTTW) the annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry. It spotlights the essential role that travel will play in driving economic growth and innovation through the theme #TravelForward.

“The travel industry fuels every industry—our industry’s success is the nation’s success,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “This week is a prime opportunity to elevate the message that travel is essential to moving America’s economy forward.”

Established in 1983, NTTW is an annual tradition to mark the U.S. travel industry’s role in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, stimulating business activity and elevating the quality of life for everyday Americans.

Travel serves as a catalyst for a productive U.S. economy and helps power the success of other industries. The U.S. travel industry generated a $2.6 trillion economic output in 2022 and supported 15 million jobs, fueling communities, small businesses and working families across the country.

Travel spending also generated nearly $160 billion in federal, state and local taxes in 2022—revenue that helped fund critical public services while saving each U.S. household an average of $1,270 in taxes.

In Orleans County, the travel industry thrives on visitors coming to experience our world class fishing, the Erie Canal and other historical assets such as the Medina Railroad Museum and Cobblestone Museum. In 2022, the bed tax that was collected exceeded $111,000. This reflects a 29% increase from 2021 which was a 26% from 2020.  We were fortunate to sustain during the peak of the pandemic in 2020 compared to 2019.

Orleans County Tourism is recognizing travel’s essential contributions by a number of promotional tools. This week, we are launching a new dynamic website to highlight all that Orleans County has to offer . This has a similar platform as the 4-county regional website, FreshAirAdventuresNY.com , that was launched in 2021. The information for each tourism related business will be expanded and featured on a dedicated page specific to that business. Viewers will be able to filter the listings and events by sub-category. And, we will have the ability to cross feed listings to both the county and regional websites simultaneously to expand our reach efficiently.

We are also expanding our partnerships so we can increase our social media campaigns and advertise in national magazines. Besides the 4-county Fresh Air Adventures campaign, we have partnered with Wyoming County to create “Lakes to Letchworth” and advertised in Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day and Country Living Magazines, which has generated over 1000 leads to date. The " 100 Must See Miles on the Erie Canal " is in partnership with Wayne, Monroe and Orleans Counties featuring the highlights along the 100 mile stretch from Medina to Clyde. We are in the process of developing a similar campaign with Niagara Falls USA.

In 2023, the tourism department expanded by introducing a part time sportfishing coordinator, Ron Bierstine, on a contract basis. Ron contributes a wealth of fishing and conservation experience to Orleans County and the region. He writes weekly fishing reports and works closely with NYS DEC and Canals NY to enhance fishing locally and regionally. We haven’t had a sportfishing coordinator since 2017 when Mike Waterhouse retired.

The summer events rack card will be available for distribution this week that features the concert series and community events. There are currently over 50 live concerts scheduled that is expected to draw thousands of visitors from outside the county that will be frequenting our shops, restaurants and plan for extended stays.

We’re expanding our video library to include the series, Small Town WNY that was produced for interstitial programming for the Buffalo/Toronto PBS market. In 2022, we collaborated with several businesses in Medina and were able to produce four 8-minute episodes profiling the history and hidden gems of Medina. We will continue reaching out to other communities to showcase their “hidden gems”  in 2023.

Said Dawn Borchert, Director of Tourism in Orleans County : “Travel is at the heart of Orleans County , powering a strong U.S. economy, creating jobs and strengthening our community’s culture and identity. This National Travel and Tourism Week, we are proud to celebrate all that travel does for our community now, and all that it will contribute in the future.”

Please visit ustravel.org/NTTW to learn more about National Travel and Tourism Week and OrleansCountyTourism.com for the multiple reasons to visit Orleans County and invite your friends!

What Is National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW)?

Established in 1983, National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual tradition to celebrate the U.S. travel community and travel’s essential role in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, inspiring new businesses and elevating the quality of life for Americans every day. May 7-13, 2023, marks the 40th anniversary of NTTW. Join us to highlight how integral travel is to every industry and nearly everything we do. Our recovery is the nation’s recovery, and travel is essential to a future of American growth and innovation. Join us as we keep moving #TravelForward.

The Power of Travel’s Untapped Potential

“Prior to the pandemic, travel was our nation’s #1 services export and generated a significant trade surplus. In 2022, travel’s trade surplus declined to just $3 billion—from a peak of $86 billion in 2015—due to the slow return of inbound international travel and full recovery of outbound travel. How we build back: Drastically lower visa wait times and welcome more international visitors to the U.S. Domestic leisure travel spending reached $837 billion in 2022. While far above pre-pandemic levels in nominal terms, it has essentially recovered to 2019 levels when adjusted for inflation. As domestic business and international inbound travel remain further behind, there is much room to grow: Domestic business travel spending remained at just 74% of 2019 levels (inflation-adjusted). International inbound visitations were 64% recovered, while inflation-adjusted spending was just 55% recovered. Let’s move #TRAVELFORWARD”

By combining an understanding of consumer needs with our own imaginations, we help to create unforgettable experiences that will resonate with visitors long after their trip has ended.

And they’ll never even know we were there.

It’s the first week of May, so let’s take a few minutes to celebrate the travel and tourism industry and all of the lives we get to impact through our work through the United States Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week.

40th National Travel and Tourism Week

Established in 1983 through a congressional resolution, National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual event taking place in the first full week of May. This week-long celebration unites the U.S. travel community to acknowledge the significant contributions travel makes to our economy, businesses, and overall well-being.

The USTA’s theme for NTTW 2023 is “Travel Forward. By moving #TravelForward, we can showcase the significant impact of travel and tourism on every part of our country. The travel industry fuels all industries, and its success is the nation’s success. As the travel industry grows, so do our communities.

Tourism’s Impact on Our Communities

Travel is an economic powerhouse for every state and numerous destinations across the country, vital to our nation’s global competitiveness. Sure, it can change a visitor’s day, but it can offer lasting benefits for those working in tourism. Here are a few examples of how tourism contributes to the well-being of communities.

  • Economic Growth : Tourism is a significant source of revenue, driving economic growth through increased spending on accommodation, attractions, restaurants, and transportation. It also contributes to foreign exchange earnings and improves a country’s balance of payments.
  • Job Creation: The tourism industry generates both direct and indirect employment opportunities, ranging from hospitality, transportation, and entertainment to travel agencies, tour operators, and souvenir shops.
  • Infrastructure Development: Tourism can lead to the improvement of local infrastructure, such as roads, airports, public transportation, and telecommunications, which benefits both tourists and residents alike.
  • Cultural Exchange: Tourism fosters cultural exchange by promoting understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, traditions, and customs. This can help break down stereotypes, increase tolerance, and create global goodwill.
  • Preservation of Cultural and Historical Heritage: Tourism can provide an incentive for communities to preserve their cultural and historical sites. These sites often become major tourist attractions, generating revenue and contributing to their ongoing preservation.
  • Environmental Conservation: Many communities recognize the value of their natural assets and invest in the conservation of ecosystems, wildlife, and natural resources. Tourism can contribute to these conservation efforts by creating awareness and generating income from eco-tourism activities.
  • Community Development: Tourism can stimulate the development of local businesses, such as restaurants, handicraft shops, and tour operators. This helps diversify the local economy and can lead to improved living standards.
  • Encouragement of Entrepreneurship: Tourism can inspire local residents to become entrepreneurs, creating new businesses to cater to tourists’ needs and preferences. This stimulates innovation and contributes to the overall growth of the local economy.

Travel by the Numbers

Across the nation, businesses rely on the travel industry for their success. The travel sector holds a prominent position in the United States’ economy, making substantial contributions to economic expansion. Supporting millions of American jobs, this industry is an essential element for communities throughout every state.

  • In 2022, direct travel spending totaled $1.2 trillion, powering communities and livelihoods across the nation.
  • 68% of Americans agree travel and tourism to their region are important economic contributors to local businesses and jobs.
  • With an economic output of $2.6 trillion in 2022, travel serves as an essential catalyst for a productive U.S. economy and helps to fuel connection and innovation within other industries.
  • Travel spending generated nearly $160 billion in total tax revenue, including $84 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2022.
  • What’s more: 62% of Americans agree taxes paid by travelers help fund essential services in their communities.

Travel & Employment

  • Eight million workers are directly employed within the travel industry.
  • The travel industry’s impact goes beyond direct employment to support a total of 15 million American jobs.
  • Prior to the pandemic, 1 out of 10 jobs depended on travel.
  • Bonus: 2.3 million domestic personal were taken in 2022—injecting dollars into local communities and contributing to the success of countless small businesses.

Travel Has Room to Grow

  • Prior to the pandemic, travel was our nation’s #1 services export and generated a significant trade surplus.
  • In 2022, travel’s trade surplus declined to just $3 billion—from a peak of $86 billion in 2015—due to the slow return of inbound international travel and full recovery of outbound travel. 3
  • Domestic leisure travel spending reached $837 billion in 2022. While far above pre-pandemic levels in nominal terms, it has essentially recovered to 2019 levels when adjusted for inflation.
  • Domestic business travel spending remained at just 74% of 2019 levels (inflation-adjusted).
  • International inbound visitations were 64% recovered, while inflation-adjusted spending was just 55% recovered.

Let’s Travel Forward, Together

The power of the travel and tourism industry is undeniable. It’s an economic powerhouse that not only transforms a visitor’s day but also fuels the growth of communities, spurs job creation, improves local infrastructure and encourages cultural exchange.

And we love this industry, too!

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Moscow plans measures to woo tourists, Foreign Tourist Card in the offing

Moscow, Russia

To woo tourists from across the world, the Moscow City Tourism Committee is taking several measures and to address payment-related issues the Russian government is planning to come out with a virtual ‘Foreign Tourist Card’, that will enable cashless payments for various services.

During the Covid pandemic, the tourist flow to Moscow had dropped significantly. However, the number of Indian tourists visiting Moscow is slowly witnessing an uptrend and with tourist-friendly measures like e-visa, this number is likely to grow in the coming months.

“We are still on our way to restore the flow of Indian tourists in Moscow like it used to be before the pandemic. Before the pandemic, there was very steady growth like 12-15 per cent on a y-o-y basis,” said Bulat Nurmukhanov, Head of International Cooperation Division of Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023.

Moreover, initiatives like the Foreign Tourist Card will help address payment-related issues, after the departure of MasterCard and Visa from the Russian market, Bulat said.

“There is an initiative by the Federal Government of Russia to develop a ‘Foreign Tourist Card’. The initiative is under process, and some legislative documents have been amended in order to make this card possible.

“The idea behind this card is that a person back home in India can remotely apply for this card and then he/she can transfer money from the personal bank account to this bank account,” Bulat added.

This will be a virtual card and this will be issued to the person back home. This card will address the payment-related issues of foreign tourists in Moscow.

To give more travel options to tourists, in March this year, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot increased the frequency of its flight services on the Delhi-Moscow route to seven times a week against four weekly services earlier.

India and Russia “in principle” agreed to revise their bilateral air services agreement earlier this month, allowing Russian carriers to operate up to 64 flights per week from 52 to India.

Russian carriers are allowed to operate these flights to six Indian cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Amritsar and Ahmedabad.

“We are really looking forward to the Indian Airlines to restore their flight connections to Moscow. Right now only Aeroflot is operating flights between Delhi and Goa. However, there are some other options available from Dubai to Moscow,” Bulat said.

In a bid to tackle the language barrier that makes arriving in and navigating in a new country quite intimidating, there are seven tourist centres across Moscow. It also has a call centre for foreign tourists in case they need any help, Bulat said.

“We are working on translating the city navigation into English. Our businesses are really active and quick to respond to what the market requires,” Bulat added.
