Thailand's famous beach resort town of Pattaya has developed a colorful reputation over the years. Located less than 200 kilometers from Thailand's capital city of Bangkok, it's a convenient place to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea.

Pattaya has drawn tourists and expats from all over the world ever since US soldiers "discovered" the once-sleepy getaway destination during the Vietnam War. Since then, Pattaya's profile has steadily increased, and it is now one of the most popular beach destinations in Southeast Asia.

In recent years, the government has made efforts to attract families to Pattaya, and you'll find a host of kid-friendly attractions and things to do, like water parks and an aquarium. Still, it remains more of an adult's destination – especially the area along Walking Street , the main entertainment hub in town.

If you are traveling with the family or are seeking a more subdued location, check out Jomtien Beach or Naklua. These areas are still touristy, but quieter than the bustling center of town. Plan your travels with our list of the top things to do in Pattaya.

Walkways wind among colorful themed gardens, including a topiary garden; 17th-century French garden; European Renaissance garden; and species-specific gardens featuring plants like tropical palms, succulents, and bonsai.

The magnificent orchid garden will awaken the inner horticulturist in anyone. Live shows at the Thai Cultural Hall add to the line-up with performances of traditional Thai dancing, sword-fighting, Thai kickboxing, and an elephant show of dubious ethical quality.

You can rent a bicycle to explore the different areas of the park, and door-to-door transportation is available.

Wat Yansangwararam

As with all of Thailand's impressive wats (temples), Wat Yansangwararam (known as Wat Yan) offers insight not only into Thai design and architectural traditions but also into the society's values. Surrounded by sprawling palm-studded gardens, the temple was dedicated to King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1988 to commemorate the 42nd year of his reign.

Precious Buddhist relics are housed in the main complex, and on the right-hand side of the path leading to the temple is a lake with impressive Chinese pavilions, filled with antiques and artifacts. Wat Yansangwararam's shrine stands on a hill, reached by a flight of 299 steps lined with Naga snakes.

Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)

This 18-meter-tall golden statue of the Buddha looks peaceful and relaxed perched atop the wooded Pratamnak Hill south of Pattaya. Climb the steep stairs, adorned on both sides with golden Naga snakes, to see the statue up close and admire the several smaller Buddhas surrounding it.

Many locals come here to pray for good health, happiness, and prosperity. You can also enjoy beautiful views over Pattaya and the bay from the top of the hill. If you're not up for a long walk up the hill, you can catch a taxi up and save your energy to climb the stairs to the statues.

Koh Larn (Coral Island) Day Trip

A 30-minute speed boat ride or 45-minute ferry ride from Pattaya, Koh Larn (also called Koh Lan) is a relatively peaceful escape from tourist-packed Pattaya. Colorful lamps at the Thepprasit Night Market

This bustling Friday to Sunday market runs between 5 and 11pm and attracts both locals and tourists. While there are other markets in Pattaya, the ones in the city center tend to charge more, so it's worth hopping on a tuk-tuk to get to Thepprasit. There are both indoor and outdoor stalls here, but the indoor part of the market is by far the largest and most impressive.

As with most Thai markets, there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to the way the stalls are set up, with sellers offering hot food standing next to those selling electronics or T-shirts. To get the best deals, you'll have to walk the entire length and width of the market and practice your haggling skills.

Be on the lookout for copied designer items and dodgy products, and instead focus on paper lamps, authentic souvenirs, and surprisingly cheap silk clothing.

Buddha engraving at Khao Chi Chan

Known as Buddha Mountain, Khao Chi Chan is a limestone hill with the world's largest Buddha image carved right on it. The golden carving of a sitting Buddha measures 109 meters tall and 70 meters wide, and takes over most of the side of the towering rock.

Created in 1996 as both an homage to the king and as a place for local Buddhists to visit, the image was cut into the stone using guided laser technology, then inlaid with gold leaf.

A tranquil garden with a small lake, paved paths, and a number of water pools filled with lotus flowers add to the beauty of the place. You'll find a few vendors and a small visitors center here, but in general, it's a place for worship and to relax surrounded by beautiful scenery.

The mountain is located just 15 kilometers outside Pattaya and not far from Jom Tien beach. While in the area, you can visit the Viharn Sien temple and museum, which houses a beautiful collection of bronze statues, cultural and religious artifacts, and a number of archeological finds.

Most travelers visit Pattaya for the lively entertainment venues on Walking Street and the sun-soaked beaches. If you're seeking seaside relaxation away from the buzz of the busy downtown strip but with easy access to it, Pattaya Hill is not only the best place to stay, but also home to many of the upmarket hotels. Families usually prefer Jomtien Beach. Here are some highly-rated hotels in these areas:

The Top 14 Things to Do in Pattaya, Thailand

Think Pattaya is just Thailand's Sin City? Think again.

puttapon/Getty Images

Pattaya, a beach city about 90 minutes south of Bangkok , is famous for all the wrong reasons. This is true not only among foreign visitors but among Thais themselves. The very word can make people cringe out loud — why would anyone come to Pattaya, a place that makes Las Vegas look virtuous. Below, you'll find the top 14 things to do in Pattaya, Thailand, which should clear up any misconceptions you have about the city.

Visit Pattaya Walking Street—Or Don't

Don't be fooled by the innocuous name of Pattaya Walking Street: Most people come here to do anything but walk. While it's true that you could theoretically just stroll through here to take photos, or sit down at one of the bars and have a cocktail, this is the place where most of what Pattaya is notorious for takes place. Be vigilant if you visit Pattaya Walking Street — and don't say we didn't warn you!

Snorkel in the Crystalline Waters off Ko Lan

Although Pattaya sits on the coast, it's not home to any of Thailand's best beaches  — not on the mainland, at least. However, you can take easy day trips by boat from Pattaya pier, which will take you to islands of striking beauty. The most popular of these is Ko Lan, whose name means "Coral Island" in Thai. As its name suggests, Ko Lan is paradise for snorkelers.

Other islands within day-trip distance of Pattaya include Ko Phai and Ko Sak.

Marvel at Art in Paradise

Beautiful beaches are the first way Pattaya bucks its reputation — art is the second. And not just any art, either. True to its name, the Art in Paradise museum features many paradisiacal scenes, depicting tropical animals, towering palm trees and water almost as beautiful as if it were sparkling before you. But it's not just a pretty face. Art in Paradise features three-dimensional art that's highly interactive, and allows you to become part of the exhibition. Needless to say, if you're looking for the best Instagram spots in Pattaya, this has got to be close to the top of the list.

Shop at Pattaya's Floating Market

When you think of floating markets in Thailand, you usually imagine the boated canals to the north and west of Bangkok, such as Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak in Samut Songkhram province. However, if you don't get a chance to visit any floating markets near Bangkok, make sure to visit the one in Pattaya. Located in Bang Lamung about 20 minutes from the city by taxi, take a leisurely walk through Pattaya's floating market and maybe even buy some produce.

Luxuriate at Nong Nuch Botanical Garden

Want to experience some of the Pattaya area's lush nature, but aren't feeling in a beachy mood, and don't want to eat pad Thai that was cooked on a long-tail boat? Head about 30 minutes west of Pattaya by taxi, to Nong Nuch Botanical Garden. Spotlighting plants native to Thailand, including an impressive variety of orchids, this expertly landscaped garden wouldn't be out of place in Europe or the United States. Well, except for the ornate Buddhist sculptures that dot its landscape and the "spirit houses" where ghosts from previous structures reside.

Skip Pattya's Main Beach for Jomtien

Some people stumble upon Pattaya's aforementioned Walking Street after watching sunset from the city's main beach. One way to avoid such a mis-step, with all due respect to the main beach, is to get your dose of Vitamin Sea at Jomtien Beach. Located south of the main strip and home to an ever-increasing variety of luxury condos, high-rise hotels and upscale eateries, Jomtien is the ideal place to lounge the day away.

Beat the Heat at Ramayana Water Park

Then again, you don't necessarily need to hit the beach to beat the heat. Pattaya, after all, is home to Asia's largest water park: Ramayana, located about 30 minutes south of the city center. Featuring a wave pool, a lazy river and dozens of water slides, this water wonderland is loosely themed to the mythology of the Ramayana itself, an ancient Indian epic poem that includes central tenets of Hinduism, the precursor to Thailand's national Buddhist religion. (And one that's still represented throughout Thailand, including at Bangkok's Erawan Shrine .)

Discover Thailand's Wine Scene

As is the case in many bars in Thailand, the quality of alcohol served in Pattaya can vary dramatically. One way to get a clean, delicious buzz is to visit Silverlake Vineyard , a winery that's only a short taxi ride from the center of Pattaya. In addition to the opportunity to drink delicious white wine produced right here in Thailand (they make red, too, but it'll be too hot to enjoy that), you can take a tour of the winery grounds, where vines that seem more befitting of Europe and California exist amid Thailand's decidedly tropical landscape.

Step into the Sanctuary of Truth

An intricate, 300-foot tall teak wood structure that presented a mythical, impressionistic vision of human history highly influenced bu Buddhism, the Sanctuary of Truth is truly an architectural masterpiece. Located just north of Pattaya's main beach not far from Art in Paradise, the Sanctuary of Truth is a great way to pass an afternoon, or to practice your photography skills.

Go to Heaven at Sukhawadee House

Pattaya Walking Street is the city's best-known source of controversy, but it's not the only one. Baan Sukhawadee, whose name literally translates to "House of Heaven," is a wholesome example of this phenomenon, even if many people believe it to be distasteful.

Built in 2000 by a private architect, this place is far from ancient, and arguably lacks the architectural integrity (or the ties to history) you find at the aforementioned Sanctuary of Truth. On the other hand, many tourists (especially Chinese ones, as of late) find its over-the-top colors and design flourishes interesting, as you'll find if you search social media for pictures taken here. The only way to find out how you'll feel, of course, is to plan your own visit here.

Discover a Literal Underwater World

Want to discover Pattaya's wide world of underwater life, but don't have your SCUBA license or don't care to snorkel? One of Thailand's best aquariums, Underwater World more than lives up to its name. With dozens of species of fish and sea mammals, including whales and dolphins, Underwater World allows you to get up-close and personal with the colorful, precious landscape that sits just off the coast of Pattaya city. This is a great Pattaya destination for families and lovers of aquatic animals.

See Ancient Siam in Replica Form

Want to see all Thailand's most important sights, but are on a time crunch? Pattaya has an antidote to that! Known as Mini Siam, this replica park just outside the city center is home to miniaturized model of Thailand's most famous attractions, from Bangkok's Grand Palace  to Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai . Somewhat puzzlingly, you'll also find replicas of non-Thai things here, including Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa . Note that most of the replicas at Mini Siam are walled off, which means that you unfortunately won't be able to take a picture of yourself looming above the Phuket's Big Buddha like Godzilla.

Take in a Priceless Panorama

Technically known as Pratumnak (though most locals simply call it "View Point,") the hill just to the south of Pattaya's main beach is the best place to get a bird's eye view of the city, especially at sunset and even after nightfall. It's also a solemn place for Thais, since it's home to a monument to fallen Thai navy soldiers. (Coastal Pattaya, not surprisingly, has often played an important role for the seafaring contingents of Thailand's military.)

Explore the Rest of Southeastern Thailand

Pattaya is often a weekend trip for residents of (and visitors to) Bangkok, but it can be so much more. In fact, you could easily argue that Pattaya is the gateway to southeastern Thailand, which is one of the country's most underrated regions.

The closest destination to Pattaya is the island of Koh Samet, located just off the coast of Rayong city in the province of the same name, around an hour from Pattaya by bus. Traveling further down the coast takes you to Trat province and the Koh Chang archipelago, which includes the islands of Koh Mak, Koh Wai, Koh Kood and of course Koh Chang (Elephant Island) itself.

#1 – The Pattaya Floating Market

Pattaya Floating Market

  • One of the best floating markets in the city.
  • Each section of the market represents one of the four regions of Thailand and sells goods from that part of the country.

Why it’s so awesome: Floating markets are everywhere in Thailand but that doesn’t mean that you should avoid them. In fact, exploring the different stores and goods on sale can make for an interesting, if expensive afternoon, which is why this is one of the best attractions in Pattaya.

What to do there: Not all the stalls are on the water, some are arranged on stilted houses alongside the river, but the best way to see the market is still by boat. So, hire a boat to take you around and stop off wherever looks interesting. You’re bound to find a few bargains and probably some great souvenirs to take home with you as well.

#2 – Art in Paradise

Art in Paradise

  • A new twist on traditional art galleries.
  • Become a part of the art and make sure you take lots of photos while you’re there.

Why it’s so awesome: If you aren’t an art lover, then strolling around a gallery can get a little boring. But this gallery is unique and encourages visitors to become a part of the artwork. Using optical illusions and other clever tricks, you can become part of the pictures, crossing ancient bridges or flying through the desert on a magic carpet. It’s like an optical illusion museum, only larger because there are ten different sections with over a hundred pieces of art on display.

What to do there: Take your friend and your camera and have an immersive art experience. This is a Pattaya must-do, mostly because it’s a unique and interesting way to explore and be a part of other people’s creations. It’s also great for kids, who will spend hours running around and making themselves a part of each scene.

And you’ll also get great views over Pattaya and Jomtien Beach as well.

What to do there: Take your camera and take the walk up to a mountain on a day that’s fine, but not too hot. Make sure you stop regularly to look back because you’ll be treated to great views of the city and be able to take some amazing photos. Once you’re up the top, just soak in the ambiance. Why it’s so awesome: There’s nothing quite like a magic show for leaving you slack-jawed and determined to look up online how the tricks are done. This magic show will allow you to experience some incredible tricks that will leave you marveling and wondering how they were done.

What to do there: Take the kids along with you to the show. They tend to sell out quickly, so make sure you book your tickets ahead of time if you want good seats. Afterwards, you can take photos with the illusionary headless body and other amazing illusions as well, just to leave you with a great souvenir of your visit.

#28 – Wat Yansangwararam – A great place to see in Pattaya if you love architecture

Wat Yansangwararam

  • This building is an amazing feat of architecture that will teach you about Thai design as well as the culture of the people.
  • The site is surrounded by stunning gardens.

Why it’s so awesome: This temple was dedicated to the King in 1988 to commemorate the 42nd year of his reign. The main complex is filled with Buddhist relics and a walk around the garden will take you past a beautiful lake surrounded by Chinese pavilions. The pavilions contain more antiques and artifacts.

What to do there: You need to take some time to wander this venue when you’re visiting Pattaya as there’s a lot to see and experience. Make sure you check out the artifacts in the Chinese pavilions and you can also walk up to Wat Yansangwararam’s shrine. It’s located on a hill, up a staircase with 299 steps, each of them lined with Naga snakes. You’ll need a bit of energy and natural fitness to get up there, but it’s worth the hike.

#29 – The Bottle Art Museum – One of the more unique places to visit in Pattaya!

  • If you enjoy slightly weird but incredibly creative pieces of art, this is the museum for you.
  • Take your wallet with you, because you just might be tempted to take home one of the tiny worlds in a bottle.

Why it’s so awesome: This museum was brought to Pattaya by artist Peter Bedelais, who creates these tiny worlds in a bottle. The museum contains more than 300 replicas of tourist attractions, Chinese palaces, and Buddha images all contained in gracefully curving glass. You’ll be surprised at the variety and the creativity of each tiny world!

What to do there: There’s nothing better than experiencing a new and creative form of art and that’s exactly what these battles are. They’re one man’s way of exploring and sharing the culture and landmarks in Pattaya. And if you take one of them home to your family, they’re sure to love the unusual souvenir of your trip!

#30 – Siriphon Orchid Farm

  • Thailand has the perfect climate for flowers, as this farm will show you in vibrant color.
  • The variety of orchids at this farm is simply astonishing.
  • Bring some cash and take some home to spruce up your room!

Why it’s so awesome: If you love nature and learning more about the world around you then this farm is a great place to spend some time. As a tropical country, Thailand is the perfect home for flowers and the orchids at this farm are stunning in their color and variety.

What to do there: Wander through the displays of flowers. You’ll probably see a few colors and varieties that you’ve never heard of. And bring your wallet with you if you’re a flower fan. Most Thai women love orchids, so if you have a date then this is the perfect place to find a gift that will delight her!

#31 – Sam Kok (The Three Kingdoms Theme Park)

Sam Kok

  • This garden is based on the idea of Chinese Feng Shui, so it’s harmonious on a level that will astonish westerners!
  • This is the perfect place to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet while learning about Chinese-Thai architecture, and Buddhism at the same time.
  • The garden is a monument to the Chinese epic novel ‘The Three Kingdoms’ and displays in the garden help tell that story.

Why it’s so awesome: This garden was created to help people, particularly westerners, understand and appreciate the Thai culture, Buddhism, and Chinese culture a little more. And it succeeded quite well at these goals as well. The garden is harmonious, with Chinese-Thai architecture and landscape design, and you can learn about the story behind Sam Kok as you wander around.

What to do there: Take your time when you’re wandering through this thematic garden. There are 3 main pagodas in the area so make sure you explore them all and go up to the top floor of the main pagoda. You’ll get some amazing view of the garden from that angle and be able to take some great photos. This display is often very quiet, it’s one of the lesser-known points of interest in Pattaya, so you can really take your time and wander around the picturesque gardens.

Awesome places to visit in Pattaya, Thailand

Nong Nooch Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful Pattaya tourist places.

1. Admire the flowers at Nong Nooch Botanical Garden

If you’re interested in flowers, trees, and gardens, this is undoubtedly one of Pattaya’s tourist places that you can’t miss. It’s a great spot to spend a pleasant afternoon away from the crowds.

Nong Nooch Botanical Garden is a theme park with various highlights. The Stonehenge Garden and the 17th-century French Garden host some of the most beautiful flowers not only in Thailand but the world.

Be sure to rent a bicycle at the entrance. Why? Because it’s the best way to tour the garden, and you’ll see more of everything that way! If you are looking for things to do in Pattaya with kids, go to the Botanical Garden, the Dinnousour Valley will keep them entertained for hours.

2. Visit the vibrant Pattaya Floating Market

There are numerous floating markets in Thailand, but none like the one in Pattaya. The market is called the “Four Regions Floating Market” because it’s divided into four regions of Thailand: North, Northeast, South, and Central.

Traders, farmers, and fishermen float along the water, selling fresh produce from each region of the country. Note that not all of the stalls are floating. Some are stilted shops that stand at the sides of the banks, giving you a privileged view of all the activity.

Be sure to take a tour through the Pattaya floating market, if you like something, stop by the boat or stall and start the negotiation. Bargaining is part of the experience and one of the funniest things to do in Pattaya. The local spices, handicrafts, and colorful vegetables and fruits are surely worth the experience!

Jomtien Beach is a stunning Pattaya tourist places away from the crowds.

3. Visit one of the best beaches in Pattaya

The crowds in Pattaya Beach can indeed be too overwhelming. So, head a little further south, Jomtien Beach might be what you’re looking for!

This stretch of fine white sand is one of the best beaches in Pattaya and a haven for those looking for tranquility. Since it’s not as big or as crowded as Pattaya Beach, it’s much more peaceful, but it doesn’t mean boring.

You can find there some of the best water activities in Pattaya, such as jet skiing, parasailing, and windsurfing. Plenty of restaurants along the beach serve fresh, delicious seafood to tease your growling stomach!

If you like eating well, another tip is to get your Pattaya Day Pass !

It’s a digital city pass that gives you access to several restaurants and cafes. You buy the pass and you can eat & drink their signature dishes/drinks without any extra cost.

It’s way cheaper than if you would pay for each meal separately.

We used the Bangkok Day Pass and Phuket Pass , we loved them! Here are the vídeos of our itineraries using Bangkok Day Pass and using the Phuket Day Pass .

You can also get a Chiang Mai Day Pass , Chiang Mai Premium Pass and Ayutthaya Day Pass . The activities, attractions, restaurants, and benefits in each city are different, so it’s worth checking them out.

Koh Larn, or Coral Island, is not of your regular Pattaya tourist places.

4. Take in the island vibes at Koh Larn – Coral Island

Pattaya tourist places worth a visit go beyond the beach shore. Another must-visit place in Pattaya is Koh Larn, also called Coral Island Pattaya and it’s located just a few minutes off the coast.

You can travel from Pattaya to Koh Larn by ferry, which leaves every 30 minutes from Bali Hai Pier. With countless breathtaking sceneries, Coral Island has some of the best beaches in Pattaya. It’s a true tropical paradise with great options for Thai seafood.

Koh Larn has 6 different beaches; each one has its own unique vibe. One of the best things to do in Koh Larn is to go beach-hopping by renting a local motorbike and driving around the island, drive carefully ok?!. This is one of the best ways to discover the hidden beaches on Koh Larn, and it’s also one of the top things to do in Pattaya with family or friends.

More than a day trip, but truly an island getaway, Koh Chang is a few hours from Pattaya and worth a visit. Check our list of things to do in Koh Chang here .

Travel Advice:

Don’t forget your Travel Insurance! You don’t want anything to ruin your trip, right? So don’t take the risk! Reliable travel insurance can help you in case of travel issues, from accidents to health problems, travel delays, and lost luggage.

There are many insurances in the market, our picks are  HeyMondo  and  SafetyWing . We used both and always had a good experience. Click on the insurance names to get a quote.

The Sanctuary of Truth is one of Pattaya's most incredible tourist places.

5. Be mesmerized by the Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is undoubtedly one of the best things to see in Pattaya. This place is like nothing else, a stunning and unique attraction in Pattaya.

The temple stands 105 meters tall, it’s all made from teak carved meticulously. A truly beautiful sight to behold, the Sanctuary of Truth is not a Buddhist temple as you may expect. A business owner designed it as a place to go and reflect upon oneself. Take time to admire the site, and check out their woodcraft workshop. If you can’t visit all Pattaya tourist places listed here, choose just a few, but don’t you dare to skip the Sanctuary of Truth.

Recommendation:  to understand more about Thailand’s culture and religion is better to have a local expert with you. We have done many tours and day experiences with TakeMeTour and always had a great time. Check out TakeMeTour day trips in Pattaya here and book your favorite one .

6. Admire the Buddha Image at Buddha Mountain (Kao Chee Chan)

With a striking appearance seen from miles away, the 130-meter-high Buddha Mountain is one of the most interesting places to visit in Pattaya.

Created in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Rama IX’s reign, the image of the Buddha on the mountain was carved using laser technology and then inlaid with gold leaves. The process was done entirely at night so that the light of the laser could be seen more clearly.

Kao Chee Chan also has some pleasant landscaped gardens and lotus ponds, giving an air of quietude about the place.

Wat Phra Khao Yai or Big Buddha is among Pattaya best tourist places.

7. Visit Pattaya’s Big Buddha

Wat Phra Khao Yai or “Big Buddha” certainly lives up to its name. Being the biggest Buddha in the region, it stands at 18 meters tall and is located 100 meters above sea level, watching over Pattaya.

Once you’re at the top of the hill next to the Buddha, you will see Jomtien Beach. The temple complex houses the highly detailed golden seated Buddha, creating a peaceful mood for visitors thanks to its numerous bells, burning incense, and several statues.

Three hundred pieces of Chinese art, Buddha images, bronze statues, and various statues of Chinese gods are all housed here!

10. Enjoy Pattaya’s nightlife at Walking Street

We can’t end our list without mentioning things to do in Pattaya at night and the famous Walking Street. The sights and sounds of Walking Street Pattaya are quite something to behold.

Walking Street is 500 meters long and accurate to its name; there are no vehicles allowed on the street after 6 pm. The street, as well as numerous smaller side streets, are full of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and beer bars.

It’s packed and it can get a bit crazy as the night goes. During the day, the road is almost empty, but at night it comes alive with neon lights and thumping music for a trademark eclectic atmosphere.

Our list of the top 10 tourist places to visit in Pattaya ends with a party. Bear in mind that things can get naughty in Pattaya’s nightlife. If you are traveling with family or kids, or if girl’s bars, loud music, and even louder tourists are not your thing, avoid certain streets and areas of Pattaya.

This coastal city is much more than its party reputation, so don’t let it overshadow all the fantastic things to do and see there.

How to get to Pattaya and around

Pattaya is situated southeast of Bangkok, and from there, it is quite easy to reach, yay! The trip from Bangkok to Pattaya takes about 2 hours, depending on the traffic.

Our destination is connected to Thailand’s capital through Highway 3 and Highway 7.

If you don’t feel like  renting a car (check the prices here) , you can go from Bangkok to Pattaya by bus (check the air-conditioned ones for some comfort). Buses depart every half hour from early in the morning until almost midnight. They leave from the Eastern (Ekkamai), Northern (Mo Chit), and Southern (Sai Tai Mai) bus terminals.

You can check buses’ prices and timetables to/from Pattaya right here.

Hotels (especially in the Khao San area) and travel agencies offer transport by minivan, which is more expensive but has the advantage of picking you up at your hotel door.

There are also taxis and private cars doing the route, but the prices can go as high as 1500 baht per person. The cheapest option is to get the train that departs from Bangkok on weekdays between 6h45 and 6h50 and enjoy 3 hour’s trip.

Another option is to go on a tour from Bangkok to Pattaya. TakeMeTour offers exciting day trips from Bangkok to Pattaya tourist attractions. The good thing is that they arrange all the transportation from Bangkok to Pattaya and even meals.

Even though it’s a pretty big place, getting around Pattaya is not that complicated. Most of the hotels, restaurants, shops, bars, and clubs are concentrated in an area that you can easily cross on foot. But since you’re on holiday and perhaps not in the mood for walking, there are many transport alternatives to choose from:

• a local bus called Beach Bus covers Pattaya’s tourist places and tickets cost only 30 baht;

• songthaews are among the cheapest and most practical transportation methods in Pattaya;

• tuk-tuks are also popular, but remember to negotiate the price before you hop on;

• motorbike taxis (the operators use colorful vests) are another cheap option to go around, though you might not feel that safe sometimes;

• car and/or motorbike rental are alternatives if you have an international driver’s license;

• and of course, there’s always a taxi. We recommend using Grab Taxi App that works like Uber.

12 Best Things to Do in Pattaya

What is pattaya most famous for.

The best things to do in Pattaya include attractions that range from ancient Thai traditions to modern adventures. This area on Thailand’s eastern seaboard is where you can find the simple pleasures of the nation’s most lively party street or be humbled by unique religious treasures. Explore nature, art, science and culture in ways you would never have imagined. Enjoy the raw beauty of the rainforest canopy or the glitz and glamor of the cabaret stage.

Our list of the best attractions in Pattaya is just a sample of the amazing variety you can find in the area. These are the absolute must-see features that every itinerary for every visitor should include. Many of the items on our list are unique in Thailand while some are simply unequalled in the entire world.

What are the best things to do in Pattaya?

Walking street.

near pattaya tourist places

Walking Street in Pattaya City offers sights and sounds quite unlike anywhere else in Thailand. While "walking street" in most other towns and cities try around Thailand usually means a regular street market, that's certainly not the case here. Indeed, there's almost nothing in the country that matches the 500 meters of fun found at the end of Pattaya’s Beach Road.

Taking its name from the fact that it is closed to vehicle traffic after 6 pm, almost every building on both sides of the road – as well as many in the side streets around it – is a nightclub, bar or restaurant, to the extent that the road is almost completely deserted during daylight hours as virtually everything is shut. At night, however, the road comes alive with neon lights, thumping music from different genres, food vendors, street performances and partygoers from around the world.

Sanctuary of Truth

near pattaya tourist places

The Sanctuary of Truth is a one-of-a-kind teak structure in Pattaya and a truly awe-inspiring monument to philosophical truth. It tells of the importance religion, philosophy and art have played in human development and the folly of neglecting morality and spiritual contentment in the pursuit of materialism.

In all, the complex is a beautiful and humbling demonstration of human endeavor and skill, particularly when you realize that none of the wood being used has been treated or chemically protected. This means that, as one section is completed, another has often succumbed to the tropical conditions and must be replaced.

Tiffany's show pattaya.

near pattaya tourist places

Tiffany's Show Pattaya is a cabaret show that takes place in a grand theater in North Pattaya. The theater has a huge faux-marble lobby that manages to be almost as spectacular as the dazzling costumes. Performers make their entrances dressed in everything from long sweeping ball-gowns and plumes of feathers to elaborate headdresses and polka-dot swimwear.

A breathless hour-long riot of sound, color and light ensues – a show that spans the entire hemisphere through song, dance or skit. Scenes include a Bollywood musical take on the Indian Raj , a traditional Korean fan dance, a homage to China's Imperial past and progress, Siam's history told through graceful Thai dance, Broadway show tunes, and slapstick burlesque.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden

near pattaya tourist places

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Pattaya features over 200 hectares of landscaped spaces bursting with tropical colors. It has some of the most remarkable flowers, displays and landscaped gardens in Thailand, if not the world.

The team behind the gardens have repeatedly won international awards for their designs, which include 17th-century French-style gardens, a recreation of Stonehenge, creative topiary displays and gardens created exclusively with cacti, bonsais and tropical palms. It is also the home of over 670 native and hybrid species of orchids. You can see regular displays of classic Thai dancing, boxing and drumming during your visit to the gardens.

Pattaya Floating Market

near pattaya tourist places

Pattaya Floating Market, also known by its true name, Four Regions Floating Market, is one of the best things to do in Pattaya. The sub-sections of this 10-hectare development represent the 4 major neighborhoods of Thailand: the north, northeast, central, and south. This representation comes in the form of shops and stalls selling souvenirs, fruits, food, art, handicrafts, postcards and clothing as well as regular cultural shows and demonstrations.

Some of the 114 vendors do indeed float, selling their wares from traditional boats and canoes. The rest are built into a sturdy stilted village, with covered walkways and stout bridges connecting them.

Big Buddha Temple

near pattaya tourist places

The so-called Big Buddha Temple of Pattaya certainly deserves its name, being the biggest in the region at 18 meters in height. Positioned nearly 100 meters above sea level, the statue watches over Pattaya and Jomtien Beaches from its position on the hill dividing both.

Known locally as Wat Phra Khao Yai, the temple complex around the highly detailed golden seated Buddha creates a reflective mood in its many visitors, thanks to its many bells, burning incense, numerous smaller statues and impressive views over the area. Not just a tourist attraction, the site is an active temple, with locals frequently visiting to pray.

Location: Phratamnak Hill, Pattaya City, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri 20150, Thailand

Pattaya water parks

near pattaya tourist places

Pattaya water parks are among the best things to do in Pattaya for families. Pattaya is home to a choice of outstanding water parks, including the largest in all of Thailand, with dozens of slides and rides between them.

The biggest and best, including Ramayana Water Park and Columbia Pictures Aquaverse (formerly Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark), are located just about 20 minutes away from Pattaya City. Each park has onsite restaurants and a range of helpful facilities for families.

Pattaya View Point

near pattaya tourist places

Pattaya View Point, also known as Khao Pattaya View Point on Pratumnak Hill, is the best viewpoint in the region. It’s the place to visit day or night to get that classic shot of Pattaya’s sweeping, crescent-shaped bay. Be warned though, this is anything but an insider’s tip, so expect to share your view with an almost ceaseless flow of package tours and the local traders who follow them touting cheap souvenirs and expensive refreshments.

This might sound off-putting, but the reality is tours will usually stop for 10 to 15 minutes and, once they have been called back to the bus, the viewpoint becomes quiet and peaceful – perfect for enjoying the stunning scenery.

Location: Soi Rajchawaroon, Pratumnak Hill, Pattaya, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri 20150, Thailand

Coral Island

near pattaya tourist places

Coral Island of Pattaya offers a blue sea and a long stretch of pristine beach void of high-rise buildings and away from the claws of civilization. Known as Koh Laan or Larn Island, it's the hub of a series of similarly idyllic little islands known as the Near Islands (being 'near' to Pattaya). It's the only one with any significant development like roads, restaurants and shops. This little piece of paradise beyond the hustle and bustle of the city is situated 7.5 km west of Pattaya Beach. It has long been an alternate retreat for those who have become jaded with Pattaya’s overdeveloped and overcrowded beaches.

Since the island is not so far away, visitors can easily go there in the morning, stay for a couple of hours and then come back to Pattaya Beach in the late afternoon. You can take the ferry to Koh Laan or a speedboat to any of the islands around it from Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier.

Location: Koh Laan, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri 20150, Thailand

Art in Paradise

near pattaya tourist places

Art in Paradise is an interactive 3D art museum in Pattaya that takes the traditional assumptions of what an art gallery should be and completely ignores them. Instead, the art is brought to life and the visitors can become part of it through the use of optical illusions and playing with perspective.

Stand in the right position and take a picture from the right angle – all of which are clearly marked out for you – and it looks like you are flying a magic carpet over the desert, crossing a rickety bridge in the jungle, bathing with dolphins in the ocean or putting the finishing touches to famous masterpieces.

Khao Chi Chan

near pattaya tourist places

Khao Chi Chan or Buddha Mountain in Jomtien is the largest engraving of Buddha in the world. The gold-embossed image was carved out of the side of a limestone mountain with a laser. It's 130 meters in height and 70 meters across at its widest. The solitary limestone hill was once used to supply the local construction industry with materials. In 1996, to commemorate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s golden jubilee, the massive image was carved into the rock and then marked out in gold on the recommendation of the then Supreme Patriarch.

The area in which it resides – commonly known as “Silverlake” – is one of remarkable natural beauty, with a couple of other nearby attractions. The grounds in front of Buddha Mountain include a temple, with saffron-robed monks a common sight, so appropriate clothing is recommended.

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Pattaya

near pattaya tourist places
