Rare Rides: Patrol the Desert in This 1989 Nissan Safari

Corey Lewis

The Patrol has forever been Nissan’s answer to the Toyota Land Cruiser, as both brands compete for rough and tumble SUV customers. Today’s Rare Ride represents just how many creature comforts can be added to a go-anywhere truck.

Presenting the Nissan Safari from 1989.

The Patrol started production in 1951, aping the looks and function of the Willys Jeep. It borrowed the name too; sometimes it was just called a Jeep. Mostly intended for military use, the bare-bones first generation lasted through 1960.

With the debut of the second generation, production expanded to include more body styles: Patrol now offered hardtops, vans, and a pickup truck. Distribution expanded as well, and the Patrol was sold (as a Nissan) at Datsun dealerships in North America between 1962 and 1969.

It was 1980 before the third-generation Patrol began production, known as the 160 series. Comfort and equipment came into play for the first time, as this generation saw the introduction of an automatic transmission. Accompanying the transmission option were new trim levels. Deluxe examples included luxuries like air conditioning and power steering.

A fourth-generation (Y60) Patrol started production in 1987, bringing us to today’s Rare Ride. In a turn from prior generations, a coil suspension replaced the old leaf springs and brought refinement to travel. Power steering was standard and, if buyers spent enough money, they’d have the benefit of front and rear disc brakes. Automatic transmissions in this generation were all of the four-speed variety, while manuals had five forward gears. Engines ranged between 2.8 and 4.2 liters, all of them inline-sixes.

The Japanese market received the fourth-generation Patrol as the Safari. While models for other markets had a 12-volt electrical system, the Safari had a 24-volt. Today’s Rare Ride is a decked-out short-wheelbase example from the end of the Eighties. It has the largest 4.2-liter diesel engine. Said diesel propels all the tape stripes, power equipment, and tweedy seats through an automatic transmission. The Safari asks $14,900 and is located in Philadelphia.

Corey Lewis

Interested in lots of cars and their various historical contexts. Started writing articles for TTAC in late 2016, when my first posts were QOTDs. From there I started a few new series like Rare Rides, Buy/Drive/Burn, Abandoned History, and most recently Rare Rides Icons. Operating from a home base in Cincinnati, Ohio, a relative auto journalist dead zone. Many of my articles are prompted by something I'll see on social media that sparks my interest and causes me to research. Finding articles and information from the early days of the internet and beyond that covers the little details lost to time: trim packages, color and wheel choices, interior fabrics. Beyond those, I'm fascinated by automotive industry experiments, both failures and successes. Lately I've taken an interest in AI, and generating "what if" type images for car models long dead. Reincarnating a modern Toyota Paseo, Lincoln Mark IX, or Isuzu Trooper through a text prompt is fun. Fun to post them on Twitter too, and watch people overreact. To that end, the social media I use most is Twitter, @CoreyLewis86. I also contribute pieces for Forbes Wheels and Forbes Home.

RH drive... perfect for a rural mail carrier who also needs 4x4 capability!!!

Bumpy ii

One of the carriers around here has a JDM Mitsubishi Pajero for that.

JohnTaurus

@bumpy ii I've been tempted to become a mail carrier just so I can justify buying some quirky RHD Japanese metal. But, in reality, $14k+ is a bit much for an older vehicle that will see daily service and may quite possibly be near impossible to find parts for. Yeah, a new RHD Wrangler is twice that easy, but it has a warranty and service/parts availability virtually anywhere on this continent.

Gedrven

Does it still have the 24V electrical system? While such things have merits for reliability reasons, maintainability would take a huge hit unless you have military-like economies of scale. What do you use for lightbulbs, for instance?

If i were to guess, it's only a partial 24v for the starting and charging circuits, and the cluster and other electrical accessories are 12v. Some older diesel tractors were set up that way.

  • Ajla The CPI shows general inflation from March 2019 to March 2024 as 23%. So anything up to that level is explained there. Most Americans under 65 aren't used to an inflationary environment. Anything beyond that level is some combination of data (and nondata 😏) factors. The linked article leans a little too much into the "new car" story though. I've looked at adding a 2nd used screw-around car and the insurance prices aren't especially low there either.
  • SCE to AUX Too bad about the Sonata in the picture. It probably had its new post-recall engine.
  • Ajla From the article linked:"he bought just a few months earlier, the rate nearly doubled." If your data model is that sensitive then it isn't very good and makes me doubt the accuracy of the new one. If you are bait-and-switching and then claiming the change is data driven then that's pretty scummy. I know insurance is a heavily regulated industry already, I think a worthwhile regulation would be limiting 12 month increases on individual rates, barring something like tickets or a DUI or increased usage.

Driven in the UAE: 2021 Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Auto test drives.

Amidst clamour for luxury SUVs, this fabled iteration of an iconic off-roader stands tall

auto safari

Introduced towards the end of 1951, the Nissan 4W60 — later named Patrol — had a relatively slow start. But over the decades, helped by the much improved G60, the MQ, and the GQ iterations, the Patrol nameplate established itself as a badge to be reckoned with among off-road enthusiasts. However, it was the fifth-generation Y61 version that truly cemented its now legendary status as a go anywhere, do anything utility vehicle. While it was popular in markets such as Australia and South America too, in the Middle East, the Nissan Patrol almost became an integral part of the landscape. This was especially so here in the UAE. The Y61 Patrol Safari was so popular among the country’s off-roading enthusiasts that it was safe at the time to assume that it would only evolve at a pace similar to that of the Mercedes Gelandewagen. It seemed too good to be altered, and was etched into the collective psyche of the region’s dune-bashers.

However, as rival brands started churning out capable SUVs loaded with luxury trappings that appealed as much to the affluent city driver as it did to the daring explorer, the Safari started looking archaic. The modern, comfortable, luxurious, and sophisticated Y62 interpretation of the legendary Patrol was launched in 2010, complete with a new platform, a design overhaul, an interior that oozed luxury, a new V8 engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission and a new, more capable four-wheel drive system. Sales figures show that was a wise decision, but what seemed a wiser decision to Patrol aficionados was the one taken by the Japanese carmaker to keep the Y61 in production alongside the new version.

auto safari

The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line of the Y61 that is specific to the Middle East. While it essentially remains the same for the 2021 model year, a few tweaks and additions here and there have made sure it remains suitably updated. These include three new colour combinations, with a black exterior colour option joining the existing white and gold body colours. Also available as an option is a new gold accent across the roof, bumpers and spare tyre cover as an alternative to the dual tone accent from previous models, letting owners create the combination of their choice. The classic ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car has also got a subtle refresh. New 17-inch alloy wheels with a ‘diamond cut’ pattern and black paint rounds out the exterior upgrades.

auto safari

The interiors of the 2021 Super Safari have also been updated with new tan leather and cloth options to choose from. If you choose the tan leather option, the seats come with a special Super Safari embossing. A new 8-inch display and audio system with Apple Carplay add a touch of modernity to the otherwise delectably utilitarian cabin.

auto safari

The rest of the good-old Safari remains the same. The 4.8-litre inline six-cylinder mated to five-speed automatic is superbly capable, refined and smooth on- and off-road. While an adventure-oriented three-door variant is still available, the five-door model is as practical and comfortable as any modern SUV and is still a great family car. It can easily seat seven passengers thanks to the two foldout cargo-area seats, which are also reasonably comfortable. It also comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in cool box, making it an ideal companion for impulsive detours into the wilderness with family or friends.

auto safari

And the rough country brings the best out of the Super Safari, with its straight-line drive transfer allowing on-the-fly shifting from 2WD to 4WD with just one shift of a lever. The navigation system, rear locking differential, front and rear-pintle tow hooks as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera make sure you are ready for anything that the mountains, the desert or the back woods throw at you. Stability control and a tyre-pressure monitor are standard, as are dual front airbags, ABS, an immobiliser and cruise control.

auto safari

A single model lasting six decades and still going strong is no mean feat. Not more than a handful of cars have managed to achieve this in the history of automobiles. And even as the Patrol nameplate keeps evolving in its successive iterations, if Nissan chooses to keep the Y61 going with periodic updates, there will still be takers. And they will tell you why this is one of the best SUVs on sale today.

Bachir Gemayel, Sales and Marketing Director, Al Masaood Automobiles argues that the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari is a step ahead of other SUVs

nissan safari wikipedia

The exceptional design, impressive technologies and vibrant performance of the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari are a perfect blend that works in sync to deliver a pleasurable overall driving experience to its owners. This drives the popularity of the Nissan Super Safari model further upwards, consistently winning the hearts of many car enthusiasts in the UAE who are in search of new off-roading adventures.

As a reflection of its growing popularity, Al Masaood Automobiles, the official distributor of Nissan in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, witnessed a 30 per cent sales increase in the Patrol Super Safari during the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. A large 90 per cent of its buyers were male customers whilst 10 per cent were female as reported by the company.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari continues the rich heritage of the Nissan brand in the region and showcases the Patrol’s undisputed standing in the UAE’s automotive culture. It comes as no surprise that a growing number of women drivers are gravitating towards this model, as they, like their male counterparts, invest more in and value its class-leading power.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari picks up where the previous models had left off. It builds on the SUV’s immense popularity amongst car owners in the UAE and the region who are after powerful vehicle performance designed for off-roading adventures.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022 offers enhanced performance supported by a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, which can produce 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Equipped with VTC and NICS, the Patrol Super Safari, which is available in a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission, delivers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway.

Equipped with many capabilities and aesthetic features, it boasts a unique exterior and interior design for a memorable driving experience. Staying true to the Nissan identity, it incorporates features that combine strength, stability, control and robust performance even on rough terrains.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022 is available across Al Masaood Automobiles showrooms in Abu Dhabi in colours black, white and gold, with a unique choice of grey or gold accents across the roof, bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. In addition, the striking `Super Safari’ decal can be seen along the side of the car, complemented by a set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

Customers mainly gravitated towards the black and twilight grey colour combination in 2021– accounting for 49 per cent of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari sales during the period. However, the radiance of the white hue proved to be a great driver of customer demand in 2022. During the first quarter of this year, the white Patrol Super Safari units constituted 52 per cent of the total sales.

As for its interior, the new model sports luxurious leather seats with a special Super Safari emboss that adds a unique touch to the model’s overall appeal. It also includes a display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and a wireless charger for added comfort and convenience. Its advanced technologies are amongst the highlights of the Patrol Super Safari, reflecting Nissan’s commitment to building vehicles with outstanding features that can level up the overall experience of its customers whilst on the road.

The Super Safari 2022 offers a host of Nissan safety features, including cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system that prevents understeer when entering or exiting a corner, and dual-front SRS airbags that reflect Nissan’s attention to the smallest details of security and safety in its models.

Providing the right features and technologies to instill confidence and guarantee reliability and stability at various road conditions, the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari is without a doubt a step ahead of other SUVs in its segment.

Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022: upgrades announced for the off-road stalwart

It was tough before, but now the uae favourite has had a series of enhancements that have taken it to the next level.

Simon Wilgress-Pipe author image

Never one to let the blowing dust settle around the wheels of its most popular vehicles, Nissan has announced a series of upgrades and adjustments for the 2022 Super Safari, the most hardcore of the Patrol breed .

This offshoot of the UAE’s most popular car is easily distinguishable from the standard version, standing higher and looking just a little bit more high-spirited.

The latest Super Safari comes with a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451Nm of torque. You can get the car in a five-speed automatic or manual transmission version.

The 2022 car has greater ground clearance, allowing it to tackle harsh gradients with more ease. It also has a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, with telescopic shock absorbers and a torsion bar, which should make the ride smoother.

In addition to the usual electronic power steering, the Super Safari is also equipped with a range of Nissan’s intelligent mobility features.

These include cruise control, tyre-pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, airbags, and a system that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner. Not a feature those into drifting would approve of.

Inside, drivers can opt to have the seats and cabin decked out in PVC, fabric, or tan leather, with the latter being adorned with a special Super Safari emboss.

The new vehicle now comes in three colours — black, white, or gold — with a choice of grey or gold flourishes across the roof, front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. That is all set off, of course, with the bold Super Safari decal along the side, just to drive the point home.

The Patrol is now in its 70th year of production , with a special edition being unveiled at Expo 2020 . The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line specific to the Middle East.

The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available in the UAE at Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi and Arabian Automobiles in Dubai. It has a starting price of Dh153,000 ($41,654).

Distinctive machine cut 17" black alloy wheels, dual-tone body colors, flared fenders, a rear spoiler and a Super Safari body stripe all build on its iconic looks.

The Patrol Super Safari boasts a 4.8L DOHC in-line 6-cylinder engine producing 280hp and a mighty 46kg or 451Nm of torque that allows it to power up dunes or tow heavy objects with ease. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Dubai, UAE – Building on the success of the legendary Patrol Super Safari, Nissan announces aesthetic and technological upgrades for the 2022 model to cater to the evolving needs of buyers in the region. Conquering the harshest of terrain for almost seventy years, the Patrol has built a legacy in the Middle East, composed of a deep-rooted heritage, power, and superior off-road capability.

The rugged appeal of the Patrol Super Safari is available with a choice of three bold exterior colours – black, white, or gold – with a unique choice of grey or gold accents across the roof, bumpers, wheel arches, and spare tyre cover for drivers to create a combination of their choice. The striking `Super Safari' decal along the side of the car is complemented by a bold set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels that contribute to the SUV's head-turning presence.

Inside, drivers can opt to have the cabin with PVC, woven fabric, or tan leather seats, with the latter adding a unique touch through a special Super Safari emboss. In addition to 2 DIN display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay, drivers also benefit from a newly installed wireless charger for added comfort and convenience.

Thierry Sabbagh, Managing Director, Nissan Middle East said: "The region's sustained love and demand for the Patrol Super Safari is reflective of the deep-rooted heritage of this all-terrain vehicle with the people of the Middle East and its compatibility with the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. The 2022 model retains the Super Safari's off-road prowess, offering customers in the Middle East value and convenience through the integration of innovative design and technological elements."

Thrilling performance is provided by a 4.8-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Equipped with VTC and NICS, in addition to a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission, the Patrol Super Safari offers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway. A straight-line drive transfer and rear differential lock further the Patrol's performance and allow it to explore places where other SUVs don't dare to go.

Built for adventure, the Patrol Super Safari's higher angle of stability, improved gradeability, and the larger approach, departure, and ramp-clearance angles, are all furthered by a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, incorporating telescopic shock absorbers and torsion bar, for confident handling on all terrain.

In addition to electronically controlled power steering that ensures effortless control at low speeds and firm handling at high speeds, the Patrol Super Safari is equipped with a host of Nissan Intelligent Mobility features for a safer and more connected driving experience. This includes cruise control, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, dual-front SRS airbags, and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner.

The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available at Nissan's partner network across the Middle East including, Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi, YK AlMoayyed & Sons in Bahrain, Arabian Automobiles Co. in Dubai, Anwar Babel Co. in Iraq, Bustami & Saheb Co. in Jordan, Abdulmohsen Abdulaziz Al Babtain in Kuwait, Rasamny-Younis Motor Company (RYMCO) in Lebanon, Suhail Bahwan Automobiles in Oman, Saleh Al Hamad Al Mana Co. in Qatar, and Tehama Trading Co. in Yemen.
