Glittering salt-white beaches washed by teal shallows, swirls of ancient, often-impassable jungle, hot-pink sunrises over spindly coconut palms – the Andaman Islands , scattered like pearls in the twinkling Andaman Sea, remain a tantalising mystery to most travellers.

Remote and still a challenge to reach, the dreamy Andamans lie geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India (1370km to the west), and are populated by both South and Southeast Asian settlers, and (sadly threatened) indigenous tribal communities. Together with the off-limits Nicobar Islands (south of the Andamans), the archipelago comprises 572 islands, with just a handful accessible to visitors. Those that do make the long journey here will find an alluring laid-back vibe, a compendium of India’s best beaches and some of the finest diving and surfing in Asia.

How to get to the Andaman Islands

There are no international flights to the Andamans, so you’re looking at a domestic flight into Port Blair from mainland-India cities such as Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , Delhi or Bengaluru . It's also possible to reach the islands via the original route: by sea. A few ferries rattle across the Bay of Bengal to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam , though timings are unreliable and distances long.

The requirement for foreigners to have a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the Andamans was overturned in 2018. Now travellers can visit 29 inhabited and 11 uninhabited islands without permits, including Havelock Island, Neil Island, Long Island, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman (though always excluding tribal areas).

Best time to visit the Andaman Islands

December to March are the top months for warm, sunny weather, good transport links and the best diving conditions, and you’re also likely to spot turtles nesting on Middle and North Andaman. The shoulder months of October, November, April and May are less reliable weather-wise, though accommodation prices drop, crowds are down and there’s consequently less strain on the natural environment.

An overview of each of the islands

Everyone’s first (ahem) port of call is the bustling provincial capital Port Blair , on South Andaman. While in town sorting out travel arrangements, it’s worth exploring the chilling British-built 1906 Cellular Jail National Memorial , where political prisoners were once held, and the jungle-wreathed Victorian British–style ruins on Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the islands’ colonial-era administrative headquarters until 1941. But the best of this region is out in the wild: the 280 sq km Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a popular day trip from Port Blair (permit required).

Where to stay: Andaman Homestay , Port Vista and Lalaji Bay View are reliable budget-to-midrange picks. Towards the upper end, go for Fortune Resort Bay Island or Sinclairs Bayview , both with sea panoramas.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

When people rave about the Andamans, they’re often talking about dazzling Havelock Island , the most developed of the islands. Silky beaches backed by thick rainforest melt into sparkling turquoise water, and the diving and snorkelling here rival the very best in South Asia. Established operators such as Dive India , Ocean Tribe and Barefoot Scuba lead you through underwater depths to spot wrecks, sharks, rays, turtles, schools of snapper and more.

Post-diving, laze away your days catching the sunrise at Kalapathar , swimming at sheltered Neil’s Cove and strolling along fabulous Radhanagar , one of Asia’s most spectacular beaches, before settling in for home-cooked Indian-international dinners, perhaps at Full Moon Café or Anju-Coco Resto . For something more active, hike into the lushly forested interior and to Elephant Beach , or join a kayaking expedition through the mangroves.

Where to stay: Eco-conscious British-run Jalakara offers boutique seclusion, a seductive infinity pool and seven uniquely designed rooms amid betel-nut trees and banana palms. Just back from Radhanagar’s sands, ecofriendly island original Barefoot at Havelock has graceful bamboo, timber and tented cottages. Budget-friendly haunts include Emerald Gecko’s beachside huts; Flying Elephant , with its bungalows overlooking electric-green rice paddies; and backpacker favourite Green Imperial . Most dive schools have simple accommodation.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

A few notches down in busyness from its sister Havelock just north across the water, Neil Island is a delightfully easy-going, pancake-flat world of rice fields, palm trees, rocky beaches, a small bazaar and a sleepy jetty that leaps into action when ferries arrive. Budget travellers head here for the rustic beach-hut vibe that originally lured people to Havelock (though mainstream tourism is on the rise on Neil, too). While Neil’s beaches aren’t fantastic for swimming, there’s excellent diving courtesy of pioneering schools like India Scuba Explorers and Dive India (you might even spot a dugong!).

Where to stay: Fuss-free bungalows such as Emerald Gecko , Breakwater Beach Resort and Kalapani epitomise all that’s wonderful and laid-back about Neil. Waterside SeaShell is arguably the island’s most upmarket stay.

Little Andaman

The kind of deliciously isolated place mentioned in hushed whispers among enamoured travellers, Little Andaman is the southernmost island that it's possible to visit in the Andamans. It's bordered by powder-soft, sun-dusted white beaches, tangles of mangroves and tumbling teal waves that make for some of India’s most terrific surf, especially at sweeping Butler Bay and from February to April. Around 130km south of Port Blair, Little Andaman suffered serious casualties during the 2004 tsunami, but has since bounced back and now ranks among the most enticing destinations in the Andamans. Around 25 sq km of the island is a protected, off-limits tribal reserve for the indigenous Onge people.

Where to stay: Most accommodation is of the budget beach cottage genre; try Hawva Beach Resort or Ieshika Resort, just back from Netaji Nagar beach. Many guest houses rent surfboards.

Middle & North Andaman

Few travellers tackle the long journey north from Port Blair to Middle and North Andaman, but venture here and you’ll uncover outstanding snorkelling, pristine honey-gold beaches, impenetrable primeval jungle, a world-renowned turtle-nesting site, a string of eerie limestone caves, a smattering of serene offshore islets, and much more.

Kalipur beach (just outside the Andamans’ second-largest settlement, Diglipur, in far North Andaman) is believed to be the only place in the world where leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles nest on the same coastal stretch (mid-December to March or April). There is simple accommodation at Kalipur, from where hikes up the Andamans’ highest mountain, 732m-tall Saddle Peak , can also be arranged.

In the remote area around Mayabunder, on Middle Andaman, you can stay amid glinting rice fields with a local conservationist family at self-sufficient Ko Hee Homestay , heading out on wildlife-spotting treks and learning about traditional crafts. Or get away from it all with a spell on quiet, untouristed Long Island, just off Middle Andaman, where bamboo-clad Blue Planet is the only place to stay.

Getting around

Once you’ve made it to Port Blair, the only way to reach most of the other islands is by ferry. Government ferry tickets are released just three days ahead (it can be a scramble at ticket offices!); tickets aren’t available online and you’ll need to ask locally for schedules (there’s an information office at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty). Buses trundle north from Port Blair through Middle Andaman and on to Diglipur on North Andaman – cheap, though time-consuming!

Thankfully, Havelock and Neil are also linked to Port Blair and each other by private ferries operated by Makruzz , Green Ocean , Sea Link and ITT Majestic ; these usually open for bookings (including online) at least a month ahead, making them the easiest option for travellers. On most islands, hiring your own bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore.

Visiting the islands responsibly

The Andamans’ fragile ecosystems and small, isolated communities remain seriously at risk from tourism (and other) development. Divers and snorkellers can help by choosing environmentally responsible operators, ensuring reefs aren’t damaged (by flippers, or by touching marine life etc), while more general practices include minimising single-use plastics, clearing any rubbish encountered, not removing shells from beaches, and supporting hotels, shops and restaurants committed to a green ethos. If you’re looking to donate your time, the NGO Reef Watch Marine Conservation accepts volunteers.

Meanwhile, for both safety and dignity, the islands’ indigenous tribal communities live in regions off-limits to visitors. Heartbreakingly, many groups have become extinct in the last century, and there are serious repercussions for anyone caught trying to access these restricted areas.

It’s also worth noting there have been several fatal crocodile attacks in the Andamans in recent years: check locally as to where it’s safe to swim and keep out of the water at dawn and dusk.

4. Radhanagar Beach: Best beach in Andaman

When we recall the best attraction or places we visited during our trip, then the Radhanagar Beach definitely occupies the top spot. It is a fabulous beach whose jade blue water is a treat to eyes. The Eldorado beach resort was also amazing.

In Port Blair, we stayed at Seagull hotel and In Havelock, we stayed at the Eldorado beach resort . Both had excellent hygiene and services. We had requested for 3star hotels and this was the best that we could get. The El Dorado beach resort was perfect in every sense and we had a joyful evening along with beachside candlelight dinner.

We mostly had food at Dal roti restaurant near Seagull hotel at Port Blair as we found it very tasty under affordable prices. Also, the food at the hotel was also good. Andaman Itinerary: Castaway on India’s Beautiful Andaman Islands

In this post, we share our 10-day Andaman itinerary and highlights from one of the most offbeat destinations in India: the beautiful, far-flung tropical archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Tucked between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea between India and Myanmar, a cluster of little-heard-of islands makes up the remote and beautiful Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

There are around 570 islands in this ocean-bound outpost, though less than 10 per cent of them are inhabited. Even fewer of the islands are open to tourists, and those are only in the Andaman cluster.

These far-flung stepping stones between continents have drawn people from across the region and beyond for more than 50,000 years. Today, some of the scattered islands are still home to uncontacted stone age tribes, while others blend Asian and subcontinental cultures, and some bear the traces of a more recent European colonial past.

Despite decades of outside influence, and beyond the walls of the upscale resorts, the islands that can be visited by tourists are still mostly low-key destinations, with limited tourist infrastructure.

In that regard, there’s still a sense that the Andamans are flying largely beneath the tourism radar. That said, judging by the extensive building works going on in some of the places we visited, things are changing.

For now though, if you’re looking for a little piece of rustic paradise off the beaten track, where time moves more slowly, life is simpler, the food is delicious and the sunsets sublime, then the Andamans are calling.

Planning an Andaman Nicobar Trip

There’s plenty to think about when considering Andaman travel. Two key questions though are how long you have , and what kind of holiday you’re after.

Despite there only being a handful of Andaman islands that can be visited by tourists, getting around and between them can be time consuming, challenging and prone to sudden change. The more time you have, the more broadly you’ll be able to travel. With less time, you’re better off focusing on one or two islands.

Our Andaman itinerary spans 10 days and three islands: South Andaman Island (home to the capital, Port Blair), Havelock Island and Neil Island .

We should note this itinerary is based on our ideal plan rather than our actual trip: for us, sudden severe weather led to lastminute ferry cancellations which kept us in Port Blair longer than planned, and very nearly scuttled our trip to Havelock and Neil altogether.

Fingers crossed you luck out with perfect weather and smooth transport for your Andaman Nicobar trip. We recommend being as flexible as you can though, and ready to change your itinerary if you need to.

How do you get to the Andaman Islands?

To get to the Andaman Islands, most people fly into the capital, Port Blair, from the Indian mainland.

There are several flight hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Our Delhi to Andaman flight took around five hours.

Hardier souls than us might consider reaching the islands by sea. It’s a crossing of three to four days from Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam.

When is the best time to visit Andaman?

The best time to visit Andaman is between October and May, over the northern winter and spring. Summer heats things up from around April.

The Monsoon season sets in between May and September. You can still visit Andaman, but it’s less than ideal as the rains are heavy and often, and the seas can be big, which in turn means unpredictable travel schedules.

That said, this is the tropics and the weather will do whatever it likes, whenever it likes. We visited in October and experienced the ragged edge of a cyclone to the north, which drenched part of our stay and forced us to be more nimble with our plans. That’s travel!

How do I get between the Andaman Islands?

Realistically, the best way to get between the Andaman islands is by passenger ferry. There are Government ferry services and private services run by ferry companies Makruzz and Green Ocean. Government services are significantly cheaper than private services, but tickets only become available a couple of days in advance and have to be purchased at the ferry ticket offices.

With limited time, we wanted to try and gain a bit of certainty by booking our tickets online ahead of time. We did so through Makruzz.

Then bad weather led to a number of ferry services, including ours, being cancelled on the day we were supposed to travel from Port Blair to Havelock. We found ourselves in a chaotic scene at the Port Blair ferry terminal as unhappy passengers from various services converged in an attempt to board later ferries.

After multiple trips between the ferry terminal and the Makruzz offices in an effort to organise passage on another boat, we finally managed to board a ferry the next day before services were cancelled again. We were incredibly lucky, but as we’d lost a day of Havelock time, and nearly weren’t able to get to Havelock at all, it was a solid reminder that it helps to have a backup plan if things don’t go as they should.

Our Suggested 10-Day Andaman Itinerary

Days 1 & 2: port blair, south andaman island.

We suggest two nights in Port Blair at the start of your trip, and one more night at the end before your flight (in case there are ferry delays between the islands).

You only need a couple of days here as there are only a handful of places to visit in Port Blair. Of course, you may wish to stay longer if you’re basing yourself here for some further explorations of South Andaman.

It’s a good spot to get oriented though, and to organise onward ferry travel to and from our next islands: Havelock and Neil.

Places to visit in Port Blair

This rough and tumble port town rises and falls over hills to the waters’ edge in bright, flaking paint and rusty corrugated roofs fringed by lush green tropical vegetation.

The British Raj set up a penal colony at Port Blair in the mid-19 th century, and the remnants of this colonial period are still starkly visible, at the grim Cellular Jail, and on nearby Ross Island, both of which are must-sees.

One of our fave ways to take in the town, while enjoying some very tasty cuisine, was from the rooftop restaurants at the Light House Residency near the Netaji Stadium, and the Hotel Lalaji Bayview. When wild weather rained all over our plans to explore further afield on South Andaman, we retreated to these spots to marvel at the storms and rework our itinerary.

Top Places to Visit in Port Blair

Cellular jail.

Port Blair’s Cellular Jail was the British Raj’s response to Indian rebellion against their rule. It was built to house political prisoners, ensuring the country’s most prominent activists were locked far away, out of all reach.

The original jail, built over ten years from 1896, had seven long wings radiating out from a central tower, and filled with nearly 700 individual cells where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement.

Today, three of the uninviting wings remain and the Celullar Jail is a national memorial to India’s fight for independence.

There’s a nightly sound and light show that tells the story of the jail. We’d love to be able to say whether it’s worth the ticket price but we were rained out of the experience.

Andaman Tour Itinerary: Cellular Jail in Port Blair

Ross Island

This is our favourite site in Port Blair and a must on an Andaman itinerary. A fifteen-minute ferry ride from town, Ross Island is worth at least half a day of rambling to explore and reimagine its haunting, vine-clad ruins.

Ross Island was once an administrative HQ for the British Raj in the Andamans, and a brutal penal colony for political prisoners. It was their forced labour that hacked out and built a settlement on the forested island. The island community had houses, admin buildings, even a church and a cemetery, all connected by pathways.

Ross was abandoned following an earthquake in 1941 and the arrival of the Japanese with WWII. Ever since, nature has been reclaiming her island and today, the ruins of Ross are webbed with tree-roots as the jungle swallows them whole.

Zonal Anthropology Museum

In any other place, we would probably give this flaking, faded storehouse a wide berth.

But the collections it houses, and the stories they tell about the long history of the Andamans and its people, make the Zonal Anthropology Museum an important stop on an Andaman Nicobar trip.

The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is still home to some of the last uncontacted stone age tribes in the world – uncontacted for their survival, but also by their choice. Visiting the islands where they live is strictly prohibited, though people have tried – even recently – to their terrible detriment.

We found just being in the vicinity of such ancient culture an intriguing aspect of our visit to the Andamans. This museum is really the best way to learn about the archipelago’s Indigenous people, as well as the more recent waves of people who have brought their cultures and traditions to the islands.

Exploring South Andaman beyond Port Blair

With more time upfront or at the end of your visit, you might consider arranging a driver or a tour to some of the other key sites in and around South Andaman. These include:

Red Skin Island and Jolly Buoy Island in Mahatma Gandhi National Park, around 45 minutes southwest of Port Blair. These gorgeous tropical islands and their crystal clear waters are alternately open to day visitors for 6 months each, giving the other island time out to recuperate. Entry is by permit only.
Chidiya Tapu Beach – Around half an hour south of Port Blair, this is a popular little gathering place by the water. We spent our last afternoon of Andaman sightseeing here, hoping for one of the epic sunsets the beach is renowned for. If we’re honest though, compared to other Andaman beaches, we found this one a little underwhelming. Plus there are crocodiles in the water, so swimming is off the cards. Still, it’s a nice enough spot to settle back for an hour or two of people watching with a chai.

Andaman Sightseeing: Clouds build over Chidiya Tapu

Should you visit Baratang Limestone Caves? Baratang Limestone Caves are around 110km north of Port Blair on Middle Andaman, and are touted as a popular day trip from the capital. Tour descriptions say it involves a very early start from Port Blair, a long, bumpy ride through the interior jungle of the island and a boat trip through mangroves to the caves. Baratang was originally on our Andaman itinerary before heavy rains ruled it out. On investigating further, we weren’t disappointed. The tour to Baratang involves travelling along the Andaman Trunk Road, an illegal route carved right through the middle of the tribal lands of the Jarawa people. India’s Supreme Court ordered the road closed back in 2002, to limit the increasing exposure of the Jarawa to the outside world and to minimise the risk of disease, exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately, the road remains open, and while there are efforts to minimise contact by tourists and workers passing through, there are plenty of references online to this part of the journey being like a ‘human safari.’ For the sake of the Jarawa and their health, wellbeing and dignity, we recommend skipping Baratang and any other sites requiring passage along this road, until there’s a legal, considerate alternative route available.

Days 3 – 6: Havelock Island

We spend four nights on Havelock, travelling to the island by ferry from Port Blair.

Havelock Island is the most popular tourist island in the Andamans, and while there are plenty of Havelock Island resorts, it’s still low-scale enough to feel like tourism hasn’t got a solid foothold yet. There was plenty of construction underway when we visited though, so it’s really just a matter of time before it does.

There are just two main roads on Havelock. Even so, we found it very easy to leave the busy main stretch behind and go zipping through the hinterland on hired mopeds, called ‘scooties.’

Havelock boasts some superb beaches and – along with Neil Island – serves up spectacular sunsets, some of the most impressive we’ve ever seen.

There are pretty beaches to laze on and turquoise waters to snorkel. For the adventurous, there’s the jungle trek to Elephant Beach. And for scuba junkies, it’s said there’s some of the best diving in the world. In fact, it was scuba diving that first put the Andamans on our bucket list.

There’s plenty to fill four days on Havelock, but if you’re just here to chill, choose your beach and settle in.

Havelock’s East Coast Beaches

Havelock’s main road runs along the east coast, and there are a couple of lovely beaches backed by jungle, where early risers can greet the sunrise.

Really though, even if you like a sleep in, the pearly white sands and crystal waters of Vijay Nagar Beach and Kala Pathar Beach are perfect for sunbaking at any time of day, though swimming is best left for when the tide is in.

As we discovered, the tides go way, way out on this side of the island, leaving skies that go on for absolutely ever.

Sunset at Radhanagar Beach

A vast swathe of white sand on Havelock’s west coast, backed by vivid green forest, Radhanagar Beach is renowned for its sunsets. And by renowned, we mean this is one secret that’s well and truly out. Radhanagar is one of the most popular places to visit in Andaman.

We made our way here one afternoon and found the beach absolutely heaving with people. Still, it’s large enough that you can wander away from the masses, who tend to crowd directly in front of the beach entrance.

A meander north brings you to pretty Neil’s Cove, while part way along the beach, a pathway into the trees pops out at the upmarket Barefoot at Havelock resort. We dropped in for a drink at the hotel bar here while we waited for the sun to drop a little lower.

Things to do in Andaman - Sunset at Radhanagar Beach on Havelock

Trek to Elephant Beach

The secret retreat of Elephant Beach is on Havelock’s northwest coast, a stunning stretch of white sand and clear water. It’s only accessible via a 2km hike along an elephant logging trail. The trackhead is signposted off Road 4, which crosses the island to Radhanagar Beach.

It isn’t a long hike to Elephant Beach, but take note of the weather before you go. We set out on the trek but were forced to turn back thanks to serious bogs created by recent rains. We persisted until we were covered in mud and couldn’t move without slipping or being sucked into quagmires. It was a laugh, but hard and messy work at the time.

If you plan to do the hike, be prepared – take a hiking pole if you can and wear shoes you don’t mind being caked in mud.

Scuba Diving Havelock Island

Word is the Andaman Islands have some of the world’s best dive sites, and it was this endorsement that first had us considering an Andaman Nicobar trip.

Diving is also offered on Neil Island, but we opted to do a couple of days’ diving from Havelock. There are around 25 dive sites scattered around the island, with macro diving a highlight.

Unfortunately for us, a trifecta of temporary restrictions on Andaman boat diving combined with churned up waters from the recent cyclone to the north and a stormy second day, meant our dives were limited to sites close to shore in less than stellar conditions.

Our dive guides were outstanding though and did their absolute utmost to give us the best experience they could.

It’s definitely worth doing a couple of dives while you’re here. If you’re a more experienced diver, we recommend contacting the dive centres ahead of time for more information about the sites and opportunities available.

Andaman Itinerary: On a dive boat at Havelock Island

Days 7 – 9: Neil Island

We spend three nights on Neil Island, travelling to the island by ferry from Havelock.

Tiny, low-key Neil Island turned out to be the highlight of our Andaman itinerary. Slow-paced, rural, rustic and remote, it was here that we felt like true castaways.

We spent our days chilling on the beach, paddling and spotting iridescent manta shrimp in crystal clear waters, sampling delicious Indian curries, and cruising through the emerald green countryside on scooties.

Without fail, the end of the each day found us on the western shore with cameras and tripods. The sunsets here are without compare.

This curving stretch of white sand and rocky shoreline points to the horizon on the northwestern tip of Neil. Fittingly named Sunset Point, it’s a magnet for just about every tourist on the island come the end of each day. It’s a beautiful spot at any time though, and good for swimming and snorkelling.

As the only Western tourists on the beach, we attracted plenty of attention too when we visited, and spent much of the final hour of daylight chatting with locals and taking part in selfie group shots.

Laxmanpur II Beach

Tucked around the corner from sparkling Laxmanpur Beach, the rocky shoreline of Laxmanpur II stretches away to the south, accessible only at low tide. It turned out to be our favourite spot on Neil Island.

Speckled with deep rockpools full of fascinating sea creatures, backed by green jungle, and split by a soaring natural rock arch, Laxmanpur II is much more than just a great spot to watch the sun go down.

But it goes without saying, the sunsets are truly spectacular. Just be sure to check the tides so you don’t end up stranded.

Sitapur Beach

This was our local beach during our stay on Neil Island: an eye-catching bay on the east coast with interesting rock formations, turquoise water, and a lush, jungley backdrop. Huge kapok trees fringe the coast here, making for lovely forest wanders.

While it’s a great beach for whiling away the hours at any time of day, Sitapur Beach is also Neil Island’s most popular spot for watching sunrise. We made our way down here each dawn, bought a freshly brewed chai from the local pop-up chai guy, and settled in to greet the day.

Exploring the countryside

While you can cover Neil Island pretty quickly by scootie or bicycle (the island is less than 14 square kilometres), getting out each day for a ride through the lovely green landscape was a highlight for us.

It also gave us a chance to search out roadside restaurants, and we ate some of our best meals in these little family-run establishments.

We also enjoyed heading into town in the evenings to visit the small but bustling market (Neil Island grows most of the region’s fruit and veg), and stop for a snack of chai and gulab jamun (Indian donuts).

Exploring by scootie is a highlight of an Andaman tour itinerary.

Day 10: Return to Port Blair

It’s good to have some extra time to get back to Port Blair, just in case there are ferry delays.

We had no problems for the return journey, and arrived back in Port Blair in the early afternoon.

So we took the opportunity to hire a car and driver for one last stint of Andaman sightseeing: a trip to Chidiya Tapu Beach in the island’s south (see our entry on this spot under Days 1 & 2 above) and a final Andaman sunset.

The next day, we farewelled this unique little Indian archipelago, and flew back to Delhi.

Hey Shobhit, we went pretty low-key with our stays in the Andamans. On Neil & Havelock, we stayed at the Emerald Gecko beach huts – very basic, great locations. We got around on hired scooties. In Port Blair, we found a bed and breakfast but it was out of town and with hindsight, we’d have stayed nearer to the centre. Good luck with the trip planning and happy travels! ~Dan

I guess for Government’s it’s always hard to strike the right balance between promoting tourism and the risk of overdevelopment. We loved the laid back, low-key vibe in the Andamans and feel like the balance is about right.

The closest you’ll be able to get to the indigenous peoples of surrounding islands will be the wonderful the Zonal Anthropology Museum where you can find plenty of information and exhibits about the local tribes.

The islands they live on are thankfully off-limits to tourists to protect their health, wellbeing, and culture.

When is the best time to visit and what is the approximate budget for 4 night stay?

We think the best time to visit is between October and May, and we’d be inclined to avoid the Monsoon season, which sets in between May and September.

In terms of costs, it really does depend on your preferences as you can find accommodation from budget to high end, and found other costs, such as food, scootie hire, and diving to be quite reasonable.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters. Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time. Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary: Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm. What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.

Things to know before visiting Andamans

The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

Is April a good time to visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Considering beaches all around what would be the general daily temperature and is it worth spending money in that month?

Hello Rahul,

Normally the good time to visit is after the end of monsoons to Mid May. The best being after Mid Jan to March (the peak season is over by Mid Jan).

Having said this you can definitely consider a visit in April as well. High temperature would be mid to high thirties and low in the range of high twenties. Days would be bright and sunny. Andamans being a destination by sea and also area of tropical forests, you may not feel the heat but experience some level of humidity.

Andaman trip is a paradise for the enterprise seekers. Jump profound into the ocean and swim with the beautiful fishes as you scuba plunge. April is a good time to visit Andaman Islands. Maximum temperature can be some degrees above 30. But as it is a tropical destination, you might not feel very hot. But yes it can be humid. Do not forget to take shades and a sunscreen to protect your skin for sunburns.

Located in the Bay of Bengal, some of the beaches in Andamans like the Radhanagar beach, have made it to various lists of the World’s best beaches . In fact, it is currently, one of the Blue Flag beaches in India . I have been quite vocal in recommending an Andaman trip plan for families, honeymoon couples and even solo trips. I am very confident that it will never disappoint but delight all those who head there.

Plan a trip to Andamans for its beautiful beaches, history and nature

Tucked away from the Indian Mainland, this archipelago of islands is still quite unexplored for a lot of reasons – the distance and the accessibility being two key ones. The place is a bit of a laggard in terms of development as compared to the bigger cities of India. However, personally, I feel that is where the charm of this Union Territory of India lies. This also, means that you need to be extra-prepared if you plan to a trip to Andaman.

Where is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India?

These islands are one of the eight union territories of India and are located in the Bay of Bengal. The group of islands is around 1300 km east of the Indian mainland.

Brief history of Andamans

There is archaeological evidence that these Indian islands have been inhabited for over 2,200 years. In fact, there are studies that trace the original human inhabitation to the current indigenous tribes of Andamans including the Andamanese, Nicobarese, and Shompen . However, there is nothing very significant in terms of historical events known about them.

The strategic location of these islands had made it an important naval point for many Indian rulers like the Chola dynasty . There are mentions of Ma-Nakkavaram or the great naked islands in some of the inscriptions found in Thanjavu r. King Rajendra Chola II in fact, used the islands to launch an attack against the Indonesian Srivijaya empire.

British Officers' Homes in ruins on Ross Island, Andamans

It was finally occupied by the Europeans in 1755 with the Danish East India Company taking it over. The British East India Company later, took over in 1789. They colonized it – first at Chatham Island and later moving it to Port Blair in 1858. This was the place used for the exile of the Indian freedom fighters during the Indian independence movement.

World War II saw a brief change of power when the Japanese took over. Later, the islands were returned to British control in 1945 and finally, transferred to India in 1950. Today, it is one of the eight Union territories of India and also, one of the best-kept secrets for travelers.

Facts about Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

It would not be wrong to say that this Indian archipelago is quite enigmatic. Most travelers to India do not even consider it for a visit and for the ones in India, not much is known. Here are some interesting Andaman and Nicobar Islands information that will help familiarize you with the place. These Andaman facts will also, increase the wanderlust quotient.

Do you know how many islands are there in Andaman and Nicobar archipelago? Well, there are 571 islands of which only 37 are inhabited by humans. They are broadly classified into North and Middle Andaman islands, South Andaman and Nicobar islands. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by the Ten Degree Channel.
Andaman and Nicobar islands also, finds a mention in the accounts of Marco Polo. He called the Nicobar as Necuverann while the Tamil rulers called it Nakkavaram .
The names – Andaman and Nicobar are believed to have originated from the Malay language . Andaman is derived from Handuman – the name for Lord Hanuman while Nicobar is said to have come in from Nakkavaram (the Tamil name).
One of the oldest and the most isolated tribes in the world – Sentinelese live on the North Sentinel island. They are not fond of humans and tend to shoot down visitors who attempt to land there. It is believed that there are 300 of them and they have lived here for almost 60,000 years. Definitely not one of those places to visit in Andamans 😉
India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island which is a part of Andamans.
The old Indian Rupee 20 has a picture of the Andaman Islands on it.
Nicobar Islands is the nesting ground for the World’s largest turtles – The Leatherback turtles.
Nicobar Islands also, yields a rare fruit called Pandunus or Nicobar Breadfruit . Not only is the fruit edible but parts of the plant are used for construction, mats and even a bathing brush.
Have you heard of the Coconut crabs? They are the World’s largest crabs and are found in Andamans. These huge creatures are also called as Robber crabs.
Last but not the least – the islands are actually closer to the Sumatra Islands in Indonesia (150 km) than the Indian mainland. They are also closer to Myanmar or Burma, just 180 km.

Tips to plan a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands

What is the best way to reach andaman.

Let’s begin the main section of this Andaman and Nicobar travel guide with the best way to get to this Union territory of India. Port Blair is the headquartre or capital of this archipelago with its own airport and port. Earlier there were two ways to get to Port Blair – by flight or by ship . However, now the Andaman travel by ship has become almost nil and there is no alternative but to take a flight to the Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair.

The first glimpse of the islands on my flight to Andamans

There are now direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata to Port Blair. Having said that I must warn you that there are limited flights to Port Blair and the air tickets for the same need to be booked well in advance to beat the last-minute exorbitant rates. Chennai and Kolkata have the maximum flights to Port Blair.

There are not many Andaman and Nicobar flights from Delhi and Mumbai. You might find one weekly direct flight but the rest are all flights with a layover.

To boost Andaman and Nicobar tourism, there are always additional special flights during the peak seasons – October to May . I would recommend keeping a price alert on these flights so that you can grab the best deal on the airfare, especially if there is a sale going on.

What is the best time to visit Andaman Nicobar?

Andaman islands are best visited between October to April

October to February is generally considered the best time to visit Andamans. This is when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the gentle waves of the beach without any issue. March and April tend to get quite warm but you can still enjoy the islands and its activities without any hitch.

Avoid the Andaman trip after the 2 nd week of May right to mid-September . This is when the monsoons begin on the islands. The islands are prone to heavy rain and thunderstorms. You might even have to watch out for cyclones during this month. A lot of inter-island travel becomes limited owing to the stormy sea.

Andaman travel guidelines and permits

During my earlier Andaman trip in 2018, there were certain permits that were required for Andamans – mainly because it was a Union territory and a tribal area. This was largely for Foreign Nationals who required a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). To boost Andaman and Nicobar island tourism, this restriction has now been lifted and all foreigners (except those from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China) can visit Port Blair as well as the other popular Andaman islands freely.

The convoy to the Baratang Island, Andamans

There are a few offbeat islands like Baratang Island that require you to travel with a convoy as you travel through tribal areas. There are specific timings for these that I have written about in this post .

A few others like the Jolly Buoy island have permits as only a certain number of boats are allowed to go at a time. These permits need to taken in advance from the Andaman tourism office at Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair.

How to do Island hopping between the best Andaman islands?

With over 500 islands, you can pretty much expect to do a lot of Island hopping. I would categorize this activity into two buckets – the first are the Islands where you stay and the second are islands that you visit as a day trip.

In this section of the Andaman and Nicobar travel guide, I will be sharing tips on how to reach these Andaman tourist places.

Best stay islands to be included in your Andamans trip plan

Port Blair is the headquarters and the main island that you will land in when you visit Andamans. Consider this as your home base. It is from here that you will be visiting all the other islands on this list.

The two islands besides Port Blair that you should consider staying in are Havelock Island (now called Swaraj Dweep ) and Neil Island (presently called Shaheed Dweep). These islands can only be accessed via a ferry from Port Blair. The ferries or liners are run by Government as well as Private operators. Earlier when I had visited, one could not pre-book the government ferries. You would need to go to Phoenix Jetty in Port Blair to stand in the queues before the departure.

However, this has changed in the recent years and you can book these Ferries online through this link . The price for the same is around 600 – 850 per seat for a ticket to Swaraj Dweep from Port Blair. The above website has the fares for all the other destinations. Government ferries are usually used by the locals and have limited tourist seats.

There are three main private operators for inter-island ferries – Makruzz, Nautica and Green Ocean . Of these, Makruzz is the most recommended. I used it to travel to Swaraj Dweep island when I visited Andamans.

Very comfortable seating and easy to book as you can do so online through here . It is advisable to book the seats as soon as it opens as the same gets filled very fast. Typically the booking opens two weeks before your scheduled date of departure. Alternately get your hotel in Havelock or Port Blair to help you with the booking.

There are very limited timings and cruises available to these islands – typically just four a day.

Andaman tour plan for the day trip islands

There are many islands around Port Blair that you can visit as a day trip. All you have to do is head to Aberdeen jetty to pick an operator and book instantly. Most hotels help you with the booking as well, so that you do not have to waste too much time.

Catch a boat or ferry to Ross Island from Port Blair

The boat operators typically offer you packages that include two – three islands and you can book at your convenience. There are group boats where you travel with other people as well as private boat hires. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy etc are some places to visit in Andamans as a day trip.

One thing to note is that some islands like Jolly Buoy Island need a special permit . Only a limited number of people can go at a time to these islands. You will need to get this permit in advance from the Tourism Department counters at Aberdeen Jetty.

Where to stay in the Andamans? (Hotels in Andamans)

As mentioned earlier, the three main islands in Andamans that I recommend for a stay are – Port Blair, Havelock Island and Neil Island.

Port Blair has plenty of options in all possible budgets for you to pick from. Being a small town, you can pick your stay anywhere here and you are likely to find the key attractions close to your hotel. I personally, picked Hotel Western Park at Delanipur Junction and found it quite convenient. Middle Point is another area close to this one that I found interesting – not too crowded but had enough shops and restaurants to keep you comfortable.

Havelock and Neil Island, on the other hand, have limited stay options. Given that, they are naturally more expensive than the hotels in Port Blair. In fact, budget the cost of the stay on these islands into your Andaman trip cost.

I highly recommend booking these hotels in advance. Both – Havelock and Neil are small islands and most of the accommodation is by the beaches. You can stay on any of these beaches as they are all just amazing! On my trip, I stayed on the Vijaynagar beach in Wild Orchid Resort – a cute, small property with lovely wooden cottages and very comfortable beds. A luxury stay here as well as on Neil Island is the Barefoot resort . On Havelock, this island is on the famed Radhanagar beach.

You can book most of these hotels online when you plan your trip to Andamans. One tip that I recommend is that once you have booked your hotel, call them up and reconfirm your booking.

How to go around on the islands in Andaman? (Conveyance and transport)

Port Blair has plenty of options for your internal travel – hiring a 2-wheeler, cabs and auto rickshaws . A lot of travel companies attach themselves to you from the time you arrive. For travel within Port Blair, you can just use auto-rickshaws. You might plan on visiting places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are a little far off from Port Blair but manageable by road . Chidiya Tapu and Baratang Island are some examples. For these, it is best to hire a cab.

In Havelock Islands, there are no auto rickshaws and cabs on call. You have to rely on your hotel to help you with one. Alternatively, you can do what we did. We took the number of the cabbie who we found at the jetty when we reached Havelock. Whenever we required him, we would just call him. For the rest of the time, we hired a 2 wheeler and rode around ourselves. This really works well if you are attempting to plan a budget trip to Andaman.

Neil Island is even smaller than Havelock Islands and you do not really need a vehicle to move around.

What to eat in Andamans?

You get a good mix of Bengali and South Indian cuisines in Andaman. At Havelock and Port Blair, you have plenty of continental food options too. If you are a foodie, you will absolutely love the choice of shacks and restaurants at Havelock. From Chinese to continental and Indian, they sure know how to reach your heart through your stomach. Two of my favorite places here are Anju-Coco Resto and Something Different .

Neil Island, on the other hand, has a limited choice of restaurants. You might just have to rely on the food provided in the hotel that you have booked.

Mobile connectivity and Wi- Fi – an essential tip in the travel guide to Andaman.

Back in 2018, there was a very limited Wi-Fi or cellular data service. Some places in Andaman like the Baratang Island and Havelock Island were almost no-signal zones. Airtel worked the best there. Even with that, I had to keep roaming around to get that one blip of signals. Booking hotels back then was also, difficult owing to this issue. Of course, the signal free zone had its perks too – like a distraction free holiday.

However, things changed after PM Modi visited Andaman and Nicobar islands. Within months, cables were laid underwater from Chennai and today, you have 4G and in some cases, 5G connectivity on the key Andaman islands . Again, Airtel and BSNL work the best. Jio still has an issue and it is best not to rely on it.

Paying for various activities in Andamans

There are plenty of ATMs available in Port Blair and Havelock . Neil Island too, has one or two of them. However, it is best to carry some cash from the start as during my visit, I found a lot of ATMs out of cash in Havelock.

With good mobile connectivity, these days UPI apps like Google Pay and PayTM also, work well. You can use these payment modes during your trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Best Places to Visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Now this can be a long long list but here are the ones that I highly recommend that you should include in your Andaman tour plan. I have also, written separate and detailed posts on a few of these Andaman tourist attractions, the links of which are included in the respective sections.

Cellular Jail in Port Blair - one of the places to visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

As I mentioned earlier, Port Blair going to be your base in Andaman and Nicobar island. Here are some of the key places that you must visit when in the city.

The Cellular Jail in Port Blair – for its melancholic history and really unusual architecture. The stories within the walls can really chill you but also, interest and excite you. I also, recommend going in for their light and sound show. You can check this place out in detail through this post .
Corbyn’s Cove – a beach on the capital island where you can indulge in water sports – including parasailing and jet-skiing. However, I recommend this only if you are not heading to Havelock Island
Samundrika Museum – I am yet to write about this one but it is a small stop that helps you discover the cultural and biodiversity of these islands. It is managed by the Navy.
Anthropology Museum – Andamans is native to a lot of tribals and discovering their lifestyle is quite enlightening. No pictures were allowed here and hence, describing it all might be difficult. With mock tribal huts, exhibits of their food vessels, their tools and clothes and explanations of their festivities, I found time short for this museum

Chidiya Tapu

This is a day trip from Port Blair. At a distance of 30 km. Chidiya Tapu is the place to experience the best sunsets in Andaman. For bird watchers, the island is a paradise with tons of migratory and native birds . The native birds include rare species of woodpeckers, Andaman green pigeons and woodswallows. There are tons of hiking trails and picnic spots – in short, a perfect day trip with nature.

Ross Island or Subhash Chandra Bose Island

Ross Island is an island that leaves you wanting for more. With its overgrown root structures, old dilapidated buildings, green pastures and herds of friendly deer, you will find that time is not enough. The island was initially used by the British as a residential base, which they later shifted to Port Blair. It is one of those Andaman islands that has to be done as a day trip from Port Blair . North Bay island

The North Bay island is one of those Andaman tourist places that comes in combination with a visit to Ross Island. You can get to this island via the Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. The place is famous for water sports and you can even do scuba diving here.

Chatham Mills

Another one of those day trips from Port Blair where you can visit an ancient mill with history that leads back to World War II and the British.. This is where the first settlement of the British started with Archibald Blair. The Chatham Saw Mills is the oldest and possibly, the largest saw mill in Asia.

Note however, you can only visit it between 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM on all days except for Mondays and Thursdays.

Jolly Buoy Island

Remember – this is one island that has limited number of permits for boats. You can visit it from Wandoor Beach after you have got a permit from the tourism office. Personally, I feel it is one of the best Andaman islands with its unspoiled nature, crystal-clear water and colorful reefs.

Baratang Island

Baratang Island is one of those places that requires you to enjoy its unusual journey. I absolutely adored it – for its limestone caves, the mangrove forests and the whole experience of going in a convoy to reach the islands. You can also visit the bubbling mud volcano on this island. It is another day trip that needs to taken from Port Blair. It can be booked online through this link .

Ross and Smith Islands in North Andamans

The approach to this group of two islands was a little difficult in the past. However, now a new bridge and road is being built. The waters around these two islands are perfect for snorkeling – in fact a delight with the lovely coral world. What makes this visit unique is that if you reach here during low tides, you can actually cross over from one island to the other by wading in water.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

You cannot plan a trip to Andaman without including Havelock Island . The place was my little heaven with its crystal blue water and unspoiled beaches. If there is a place that I want to retire to right now, Havelock it will be. This is where you need to spend at least 2 – 3 nights.

Scuba Diving from Govindnagar Beach at Havelock Island

Not only is it perfect for families but it is one of those recommended places to visit in Andaman for a honeymoon. It is home to one of India’s Blue Flag beaches – Radhanagar Beach . This island is the best place to do scuba diving in Andamans. In fact, you can even do a PADI course during your three-day stay in Havelock island. Read more about this gorgeous island in this post.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

You cannot plan a honeymoon trip to Andaman without including Neil Island. It is another piece of Paradise where you can stay and engage in some water sports. The secluded air and the divine landscape of blue waters with artistic rocks adds that aura of serenity to the whole Andaman trip.

Water sports in Andamans

Andamans offers you plenty of options for water sports. It is best known for scuba diving – which I highly recommend that you include in your Andaman trip plan. You can even enjoy a half-submarine ride or do a sea walk . They have even got the self-ride seakart activity that I have so far experienced only in Mauritius (and I loved it!)

Snorkeling, jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing are available in plenty. Remember to engage with certified PADI instructors for Scuba Diving . The best options are available at Havelock. There are plenty of dive schools here, one almost every 100 m. On my last visit, the shore dives started at INR 2500 and the boat dives started at INR 3500.

All these activities can be arranged by your hotels or you can even do it yourself by reaching an island and engaging an operator who has a shop on it. The rates for the same are pretty standard and are displayed at the entrance of a shop. Please ensure you listen to all the instructions carefully and keep safe while engaging in these water sports.

What to pack for your Andaman trip?

Here is a list of essentials that you will need for your Andaman and Nicobar trip –

A wide-brim hat
Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
Binoculars, especially if you are keen bird watcher

What kind of Andaman Travel Package is available for planning a trip? And should you go for one?

There are two types of travel packages for Andamans available – standard and custom. The standard packages like this one include hotels and transport including the ferries between the islands. However, they do not have day-to-day activities as a part of their deal. These can be booked online. They may not have air travel included.

The customized Andaman travel packages are designed to suit your taste. There are several tour companies like Mini India that help you with this. They can even organize the activities and help you with the permits on Andaman islands. You can even ask them to book your air tickets.

Tour packages definitely help you cut down time on booking hotels and transport in Andaman. From my experience, booking ferries, different hotels on the islands does take a lot of time and involves a lot of follow-up. It is not difficult because I did it all by myself but if you are a busy and do not have the time to research, compare and book on your own – then go for the packages.

Is it safe to travel to andamans.

Andamans is a very safe place to travel – for solo travelers, families as well as couples. The islands have a low crime rate as there is literally no place for anyone to hide. The islands are small and movement between them is restricted and well-tracked.

Are there any direct Mumbai to Andaman and Nicobar Islands flights?

At the moment, there is no direct flight from Mumbai to Port Blair. One has to take a flight with a layover from Mumbai. There may be special flights announced during the peak season.

How many days are enough for Andaman?

I would recommend at least 5 nights and 6 days of Andaman trip plan to enjoy the key islands.

Can I plan an Andaman trip on my own?

Yes, it is possible as well as quite easy to plan an Andaman trip on your own. But it indeed is a Catch-22 situation, and soon we could see hordes of tourists overrunning these places. I didn’t know exactly were Andaman and Nicobar islands were until know. Of course I didn’t know as well they are Indian islands, from the map it could seem they belong to Malaysia or Myanmar. Andamans is a great place for vacation. The beaches reminds one about the beaches of Western Thailand. We didn’t go for for a scuba dive in Andamans.

Your scuba diving pics made me nostalgic about my trip to Andaman islands when my father was the Secretary Tourism in the islands. I did water sports, drove water scooter, snorkeling and scuba diving. While diving, i touched the base of the shallow part of the ocean (around 6 meter) and was so proud of myself! I was patting myself on the back as people watched me with amusement!

I am planning to go on trip to Andaman. I have few queries, request you to answer if you can :)

1. Is April 1st week good time to visit there as I am travelling with family ( My grandmother, 78 Years, My niece 5 Months old)? Found temp would be around 35 degrees.

3. Can anybody suggest itinerary for 4 days trip ( excluding 2 days for flights )

Please suggest anything if you want to from your end.

Q1 April would be hot and humid during day time, but not too unbearable! Carry lots of sunscreen, hat, umbrella!

Day 1 arrive Port Blair, visit Cellular jail , corbyn cove beach, sound and light show, samudrika museum depending on time.

Day 2: Ferry to Havelock, visit Kalapathar beach , Radhanagar beach for sunset, stay the night preferably a resort located on Vijayanagar / Govind Nagar beach

Day 3: Elephant beach for water sports, take evening ferry to Port Blair

Day 4: Jollybuoy / Northbay trip

The most economical stay options are Govt resorts, but booking them is a pain!

Q3. 4 day trip is too less if you want to enjoy Havelock. See if you can extend the stay by a couple of days.

Since, you are going with your grand mother. I would suggest spend more time at Havelock as it is more peaceful and away from the city hustle bustle. However, Port Blair is also good. Andaman Castle-one of the homestays in PortBlair I found good.

4 days trip is too short. And I suggest that you must visit Havelock.

Day 1 Port Blair : Take early morning ferry to Havelock (one night at havelock) - Radhanagar Beach , Kalapatthar Beach, Elephant Beach (Submarine coral safari considering the fact that you are travelling with your grandma & Niece )

Day 2: take afternoon ferry from Havelock to port Blair

Day 3 : Neil Island , you can rest afterwards or you may go enjoy your evening at local Corbyn's cove beach. (3-3.5 Km from city)

Day 4: Jolly buoy/Wondoor & Cellular jail (+Light & Sound Show)

*Cellular jail remains closed on Monday.

If you reach Port Blair by afternoon then you can go to see cellular jail on same day or you can do shopping (Sagarika Emporium)

About the Andaman Islands

The Andaman Islands are an Indian archipelago in the Bay of Bengal with a population of 5 lakh people. It comprises roughly 572 islands known for their palm-lined, white-sand beaches, mangroves, and tropical rainforests. Only about 38 of them are inhabited. Andaman islands are also home to gazillion gorgeous coral reefs with vibrant marine life and thus it’s a popular diving and snorkelling site. It is also one of India’s top honeymoon destinations. South Andaman is where I went, home to the capital—Port Blair—and also to most of the island’s population. The remote Northern Islands—closed to visitors when I was there—is home to indigenous Islanders, and much of it is off-limits to visitors.

Getting to the Andaman Islands

Oh whew! This can get complicated. Nonstop flights to Port Blair from Mumbai and most other Indian cities are rare. There are a few nonstop flights that fly from Chennai, Vishakhapatnam, and Kolkata and most transit flights from other cities have technical stops at these two. So, it was a challenge to find the right flight from Mumbai at an optimum price and we had to track the flight prices hourly until they fell to sub INR 8k (USD 100).

In the end, we took a 3 am flight. Yes, 3 am! And landed red-eyed at the airport. Still, it was nonstop. Small mercies.

Next, came another challenge. We had to wait for the Covid test results to arrive in order to board the flight, which, as per recent guidelines, had to be exactly within 48 hours of our landing at Port Blair airport. And what with the increased Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, the labs were overburdened and results delayed. So it was a nail-biting wait until the report in our mailboxes arrived at 12 am, 2 hours before the flight. I was all readying to beg and grovel at the airport.

There are also ships that leave from Chennai, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam to Port Blair. The journey takes 50-60 hours.

But despite the challenges of the current times, we managed to land in this gorgeous gem of an island and lo and behold, I present to you a condensed, and, according to me, perfect, four-day itinerary.

Important to know

Mobile network is erratic on the island. Vodafone and Jio did not work when I was there. Airtel is somewhat better. Hotel Wi-Fi is your best bet, which in most cases is only available at the reception. Thus, do not expect to work out of Andaman just as yet.

Cab hailing services such as Uber and Ola do not operate on the island, and taxis can be somewhat expensive, so rent a scooter or a bike for the period you will be here, or do some setting with a cab driver, persuading him to give you a package deal.

Cash is mostly king. Get plenty when you come, although there are ATMs, they are few and far in between. Most places prefer cash or payment through a digital wallet platform.

Liquor is expensive and shops few. If you find one, stock up.

Most beaches open at 10 am and close by 5 pm. Days at the islands end early too. Expect to be back in your rooms by 10:30 pm.

Hotels check-in (usually 11 am – 12 pm) and checkout (usually 8 – 10 am) early.

Overall, I spent about INR 25,000 (USD 330) on the trip (ex-flight).

Best time to visit

We went in April. People had warned us about the heat and humidity, which wasn’t too bad. Only the rains can be a problem, so avoid visiting in the monsoon months, which are June to August.

Now, the four-day do it yourself itinerary to see the best parts of the Andaman Islands.

The do-it-yourself itinerary

Day 1: havelock islands.

Havelock, also known as Swaraj Dweep, is an island of beautiful white sandy beaches, lush green forest, and rich coral reefs. And because of its rich undersea treasure, it is a sought after destination for snorkelling and scuba diving.

We proceeded to Havelock as soon as we landed in Port Blair. The two ways to do this is taking a ferry or a helicopter . We took a Makruzz Ferry.

The Makruzz ferries (leaves from Haddo Jetty) was better than my expectations. It was well managed, clean, with great views, and equipped with a small eatery, although you cannot go out to the deck. The government ferries (leave from Phoenix Bay Jetty), on the other hand, allow that privilege and cost half of what the private ferries cost. There are other private ferry operators such as Aashi and Green Ocean. In the end, it comes down to cost and timing.

You cannot purchase the Makruzz Ferry tickets at the jetty. Their office is en route (located in Airport Authority Colony, Delanipur, Port Blair), in case you want to play dangerous and decide to buy the tickets after you land. But tickets are available online even until a few hours before travel. On the other hand, tickets to government ferries cannot be bought in advance or online. You need to employ a travel agent or queue up at the counter to fill a form.

A ferry ride to Havelock island takes 1 hour 30 min by private ferry and 2 hours by a government ferry. We landed at 6:30 am, showed our Covid-negative reports, got it stamped, and booked a prepaid cab (INR 250 / USD 3.5 for a ride to the Haddo Jetty). You need to reach the jetty at least 30 minutes prior so you can get a boarding slip for the Ferry (The slip could be a Covid-19 exception). At Havelock and Neil, these counters are outside the Jetty. Boarding closes ten minutes before departure. A mobile ticket is good enough.

Once in Havelock, rent a scooter or a bike to get around. Autos can get expensive. A bike costs INR 500 (USD 7) to rent for 24 hours to rent, added with an INR 2000 (USD 27) returnable deposit. Your hotel can provide you with one, and there are a few rentals next to the jetty.

Your first-day do-it-yourself itinerary in Andaman

Radhanagar Beach

A beautiful white sand beach which is considered among the best in Asia (Tripadvisor, 2017 Traveler’s Choice Awards), Radhanagar beach is about 10 km away from the Swaraj Deep Jetty and you’ll need an auto (INR 500/ USD 7) or a bike to get there. The water is crystal clear and gains ground beautifully; you can get neck-deep early on, but the waves are gentle enough and the safe area is marked properly; so you never feel afraid. There are plenty of lifeguards around as well. Entry to the beach start at 10 am and closes at 5 pm.

Elephanta Beach

Elephanta Beach (alternately called Elephant Beach) is a calm beach with clear waters, plenty of underwater life, and inexpensive water sports activities. The beach was named after three elephants who once used to provide rides here; sadly, they’re no more. On most days, the beach is reasonably crowded and has a lot of water sports action happening. You can arrive at Elephanta Beach by taking either a short boat ride or a thirty-minute trek through the lush forests from a point close to Radhanagar beach.

The boats to Elephanta Beach start plying at 8:30 am and end at 12:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased next to the Swaraj Deep Jetty, where you got off. The boat takes you to the island (20 min to and from) and leaves you there to do what you will for 3 hours. You come back in the same boat you go in. A mini snorkelling trip is thrown in free of cost. You could upgrade the snorkelling to go farther and deeper, which I found totally worth it. Most water sports cost INR 200 (USD 3) per head, while deep-sea snorkelling (if you want to upgrade your free snorkel) with photos will cost INR 1000 (USD 13) per head.

A trek to Elephanta Beach would likely be more fun. While we didn’t do this, we met a few tourists who did. The trek starts here and it may bode well to take a local guide to help find the way. A guide will cost about INR 500 (USD 7).

Day 2: Havelock Islands

Scuba diving.

This is the primary draw of the island and many take a trip merely to experience this. Havelock is a great place for scuba diving because of the calm and crystal-clear water, predictable ocean currents, and the colourful corals and countless fish that thrive in them. If you’re a first-timer and afraid of water, don’t worry, and don’t be afraid. A scuba dive is easy to do and you’ll be safe. After all, you do have a SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) and an instructor with you, at all times.

By the way, did I tell you I stood on the ocean floor and watched a red octopus flit about for 10 minutes! More on Andaman’s underwater life here .

4 day Andaman itinerary Scuba at Havelock

We used Seahawks Scuba for our dive. It cost us INR 3500 (USD 47) per head, all inclusive, for a boat dive. DiveIndia and Barefoot (they have resorts too) are the most popular, and thus also more expensive. We also researched Scubalove and Ocean Tribe; both seemed good. It all comes down to cost and availability in the end. You’ll find lots of providers as you walk down the street or even partnered with your hotel.

Where to stay at Havelock Island

There are several great resorts in Havelock and we stayed in three of them.

Next to each other are Havelock Island Beach Resort and Sea Shell Resort , a kilometre away from the Havelock Jetty. The former is cheaper, with an awesome beachfront. The latter is fancier with a great swimming pool and beautifully maintained rooms and grounds. Both offer shore scuba opportunities and are located at 2, Govind Nagar Beach.

Symphony Palms is 2 km away, on 3, Govind Nagar Beach, close to where most boat scuba takes place. The Sea Shell Resort was our most expensive stay, still below INR 6000/ night (USD 80/ night), and well worth the price.

4 day Andaman itinerary Havelock Beach Views

Eat and chill at the highly-rated beachside cafe— Something Different , easily walkable via the beach from Havelock Island Beach Resort or the Sea Shell Resort. I had one of my life’s best Risotto there. Venom at Symphony Palms was a good hangout spot for after-dinner drinks. The Bonova Cafe and Pub at Sea Shell Resort was fantastic for coffee, pizza, and the general vibe.

The trip from Havelock to Neil Island can be done by one of the private ferries (they have better timings, and cost about INR 1200 i.e. USD 16) or a government ferry (plies in the afternoon, office is a few meters away from the jetty, costs about half of what a private ferry costs, or INR 560 / USD 7.5).

Day 3: Neil Islands

Named Shaheed Dweep but popularly known as Neil, Neil Island is a smaller version of Havelock with a distinct laidback village feel. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has a large Bengali population.

The main beaches of Neil are Bharatpur Beach (for water sports – right next to the jetty) and Sitapur Beach (for sunset viewing). The sea around Neil is as clear as in Havelock so one can indulge in scuba and snorkelling. After watching the sunset at Sitapur, you can hang around in the gunny bag shacks to enjoy locally roasted fish, sip tea, and enjoy the balmy evening sea.

Another interesting place to visit is the Natural Bridge , or a bridge made out of two living natural corals fused together naturally. Natural saltwater mini-pools have formed inside the rock formations next to it and by the sea and one can see crabs and fish swimming inside as well as corals. The bridge is fondly referred to as the Howrah Bridge by the Bengalis settled around it.

Also, the night sky is spectacular in Andaman. It is always a sky full of stars. And no better place to stargaze than in Neil, quieter than its more popular island counterpart, Havelock.

Where to stay at Neil Island

There are not as many fancy hotels to stay in on Neil Island as in Havelock. We stayed at Sea Shell which was nice enough. Their other property— Samssara (5 min away)—is more upscale. Symphony Summer Sands and Silver Sands seemed like other good options.

Day 4: Port Blair

While Havelock was the highlight of my trip, Port Blair had a lot of interesting things to see as well. An easy way to get around Port Blair, as most of Andaman, is to hire a scooter or bike, but you can also hire an auto or taxi for the day. An auto cost us INR 1000 (USD 13) to travel from the Haddo Jetty to see Corbyn’s Cove, Cellular Jail, and Ross Island (only transport to and from the Water Sports Complex / Aberdeen Jetty), and to my hotel next to the airport. The points of interest are all not far from each other, but autos and cabs are quite expensive in Port Blair, and thus, a package deal works better.

Cellular Jail

This was the primary reason for extending my stay at Port Blair. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani (‘Black Waters’ in Hindi), was a colonial prison used by the British for exiling political prisoners in the years before Indian Independence. This is how I knew of Port Blair and Andaman until the island’s popularity exploded for the purposes of tourism. The prison was built between 1896 and 1906 and about 80,000 freedom fighters were held here, many of them tortured and executed.

The most popular thing to do at Cellular Jail is watching the Light and Sound show, which costs INR150 (USD 2) / head and starts from 5:30 pm (different timings for the Hindi and English language showings). While somewhat entertaining, I thought it was hyped. The jail itself is a good walkabout as you relive history and appreciate the sacrifice that generation made for the pride and freedom we enjoy today. Entry to the jail grounds costs INR 30 (USD 0.4)/ head. The last entry is at 4 pm.

Ross Island

It is annoying how many noteworthy locations in Andaman are actually named after the British. I learnt that Neil Island was named after British Brigadier General James Neill who was one of the perps in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Argh. All the names have been changed (Neil Island is now called Shaheed Dweep, for instance), but usage is yet to become mainstream. Ross Island is another such, named after Captain Daniel Ross, but now called Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose Dweep. The British used it as an Administrative Headquarters for 85 years, since 1857. It was later abandoned after an earthquake in 1941. The island itself is the most interesting visit of Port Blair, overridden as it is with deer, peacocks, creeper-covered ruins, and majestic thick-rooted peepul trees. There is also an impressive lighthouse overlooking the ocean. Unfortunately, these were built by Indian prisoners, most of whom were actually freedom fighters imprisoned in Cellular Jail. It was difficult for me not to feel a tinge of sadness when I walked about.

Entry to Ross Island is INR 30 but we took a boat from the Water Sports Complex to get here which cost INR 370 (USD 5) per head. You are given one hour to see the island (criminally short) and then you’ve got to head back in the same boat. A golf cart can make it easier to see the grounds (costs INR 80 or USD 1 per seat) but if the weather is balmy, the grounds are better walked.

Corbyn Cove Beach

I wasn’t particularly thrilled by Corbyn Cove but it is one of the most popular places to visit in Port Blair. Stop by for some water sports (if you haven’t had enough of them already), take a dip in the sea, and eat some kulfi or chat on one of the lounge chairs by the beach. It is a one hour stop.

Other places to visit in Port Blair are Chidiya Tapu, Samudrika Marine Museum, and Jolly Buoy Island.

Where to stay at Port Blair

Next to the airport: Lemon Tree is bang opposite the airport gate and is a good choice if you are looking to take or leave on an early flight. We stayed at Kanchan’s Nest which was value for money. Andaman Shore is another option. Both hotels are located right behind Lemon Tree on Lamba Lane and it takes 5 minutes to walk to the airport from them.

Central Hotel options : Sea Shell , Symphony Samudra , or Seascape .

First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.

What is the best time to visit Andaman?

The best time to visit Andaman & Nicobar Islands is between October and March as the weather stays dry on most days and it's not too hot. The temperature ranges from 20°C to 25°C, providing a comfortable and enjoyable climate for outdoor exploration or just lazying around on the gorgeous beaches. The underwater visibility is excellent, and the sea remains calm making it a perfect time for diving and water-based activities such as snorkeling and boat excursions. Summer months (April-June) could be hot and it rains sometimes as well. However, Andaman being a tropical destination, the temperature doesn't go beyond 37 degrees on most days. Afternoons could be extreme for some but the morning and early evenings are perfect for sightseeing. Hence it's also a good time to visit if you're fine with slightly higher temperatures. The summer months bring calm seas and excellent underwater visibility, making it an ideal time for diving and snorkeling. The coral reefs around Andaman are vibrant, and marine life is abundant, offering a captivating underwater experience. Summer is considered the off-peak season in Andaman, leading to more affordable accommodations and fewer crowds. Monsoons (July to September) are not always recommended as the waves could be unpredictable and specific regions also receive heavy downpours. During the monsoon season or on days when it rains heavily, the ferry schedule gets disturbed with big delays and even cancellations. Water sports on beaches are also not available and if you're planning to dive or snorkel, visibility in the water diminishes during the rainy season.

Lok Sabha elections Phase 2: Voting underway; Rahul Gandhi, Hema Malini in fray

15.88 crore voters are eligible to exercise their fundamental right in the second phase of the lok sabha elections..

Voting for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections began on Friday morning. 88 constituencies across 12 states and a union territory, including Congress stalwart Rahul Gandhi's Wayanad, are voting to choose their representatives to the lower house of the parliament.

Polling officials leave for election duty on the eve of the second phase of Lok Sabha polls, in Chikkamagaluru, on Thursday. (PTI)

Voting in all 20 seats in Kerala started at 7 am today. Polling in 14 seats in Karnataka, 13 seats in Rajasthan, 8 seats each in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh , 6 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 5 seats each in Assam and Bihar, 3 seats each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and 1 seat each in Manipur, Tripura and Jammu and Kashmir, will also take place today.

89 seats were supposed to be polling in the second phase elections; however, voting in Madhya Pradesh's Betul was rescheduled due to the death of the BSP candidate.

In total, 15.88 crore voters are eligible to exercise their fundamental right in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections. 8.08 crore male voters, 7.8 crore female voters and 5,929 third gender electors are eligible to vote at 1.67 lakh polling stations. These include 34.8 lakh first-time voters and 3.28 crore young voters in the age group of 20-29 years.

1202 candidates will try their luck in the second phase of the general elections, including 102 women and two people from the third gender category.

Political stalwarts like Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, actor-turned-politician Arun Govil, Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar's brother DK Suresh (Cong), former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy (JDS), BJP's Hema Malini, Om Birla and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat are in the fray today.

Rahul Gandhi, the sitting MP from Wayanad, is contesting against CPI's Annie Raja and BJP's K Surendran. Tharoor, the Congress Thiruvananthapuram candidate, is contesting against BJP's Rajeev Chandrashekhar. Malini, who has represented the Mathura constituency since 2014, is contesting against Congress's Mukesh Dhangar while Om Birla, a two-time MP from Kota, is facing Prahlad Gunjal of the Congress. Shekhawat is eyeing a third win from the Jodhpur seat. Tejasvi Surya is contesting against Congress's Sowmya Reddy.

In the 2019 general elections, the ruling National Democratic Alliance had won 56 of these 89 seats.

The first of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections comprising 102 seats witnessed 65.5 percent voter turnout.

After Friday's voting, the Lok Sabha elections will be over in Kerala, Rajasthan and Tripura. In the first phase on April 19, polling was completed in all seats of Tamil Nadu (39), Uttarakhand (5), Arunachal Pradesh (2), Meghalaya (2), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Puducherry (1), Sikkim (1) and Lakshadweep (1).

The elections for the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections will take place on May 7.
