Also here is a snapshot of other auditions they are doing.  Nice to see they’re still doing off Broadway shows.

As I recall Choir of Man was on Escape in January.  We did not see it since we planned to do to the last show and it got cancelled.

Jersey Boys is on Bliss..at least as of now.

The performers are on a contract. They turn every 6 months with some rehearsal on land before deploying to the ship. So,,, you should see a casting call most of the time, based on the number of ships.

We saw Jersey Boys and Six on the Bliss while we were sailing in Nov.  Choir of Man is listed on our show list on our upcoming March sailing in March.   🙂

It’s too bad NCL can’t coordinate the cast changeover a little better. To remove a very popular and marquee location like Syd’s for several cruises while the new cast is hired/trained is unfortunate and not the best way to build brand loyalty. I suspect it’s money. They may not want to pay a shipboard cast and a new cast training on land, but I’m sailing for 12 days with one of the most popular venues closed while a new cast rehearses in Chicago.

We’re in the same boat (pun intended). We’re sailing Epic in early February and Priscilla is no longer on that sailing.  I doubt they can replace quick enough…so we’ll be left with sub-par main theater entertainment.  However, while we feel cheated based on what we booked and what we get, it is not the main reason we chose this cruise.  Even if this cruise is one of the worst…we suspect the next one will be even better.  We call it the Redemption Cruise.  We’ve had a couple.  Cruise on 😎

I wonder if I should bring my guitars on the 1-8-2022 Lol

Of course you should. There has to be an undiscovered Pat Benatar who can play piano on board somewhere and every guy over the age of 12 has played drums in a rock n roll band (at least in his own mind). Put you on the guitar accompanied with all that on Syd’s stage and I’m going to watch for at least three beers (five if you play anything by Def Lepard).

Haha

I think that there are a lot of unsubstantiated assertions here. Lately, when a show cancels, it is more like one or more of the cast has COVID and everyone is isolated until they test clean for 5 days.

It is not covid! Too many missing listings etc, especially with the link for casting call on Jan 4 for syd entertainers.  There is a post where one of syds entertainers parents was going on cruise and the show was canceled indefinitely.  They have to know it has been a hit, with waiting lines to get in etc.  A casting call on Jan 4, I do not see the show returning right away, but I hope I am pleasently supprised.  I have a Feb 1 cruise and am upset if it does not return, my wife and I have talked about how we are looking forward to it.  I love to see live rock bands on any cruise and make sure to see them as much as reasonably possible.  Almost every cruise has atleast one, and loved by many.  I can remember before syds, they would have routine cover bands play there.  Why would NCL let it lapse, especially over xmas and NYE cruises, people are not happy.  Junk, the show in the specialty dining venue is gone, again my wife and I love to go to those as the other headline shows are not so great except "choir of men" which use to be in this venue until became very popular and moved to main theater.  I get it, inflation, covid, supply chain etc. have affected us all, but to remove things that attract customers baffles me.  They have raised room tips to highest in industry, cruise prices in category seem to be at or above pre covid(no real bargains) Taken away specialty dinings with free at sea, prices on the nickle and dime items are all up(such as thermal suite etc), one turn down a day from two.  It is so hard to swallow the increases and removal of services, when those happen it is very unlikely even in a positve turn of the economy to return to pre levels.  I know I am ranting but I love cruising or I did, and looked forward to such things as Syds etc.  In fact we cruised with NCL to get to Platinum and are shareholders, uggh.  Lets hope we get good news of quick return, I am not a fan of Karoke, as I cannot sing and nor can many others :}  !

Hmmm. Not sure what is unsubstantiated here.  We booked Epic when Priscilla was in main theater—and we were looking forward to seeing a production we haven’t seen before.  As of a few weeks ago, Priscilla disappeared from the entertainment line-up.  Are you suggesting that Priscilla disappeared due to Covid? Is my feeling of being cheated unsubstantiated?  That would be for me to decide. Did I say this was going to be the worst cruise…no, I just said if it was we would continue to cruise.  I apologize in advance if I missed your point.

Nothing unsubstantiated.

A review of NCL.com reflects that Junk’d is no longer advertised as appearing on the Getaway. It is no longer listed as an item available for purchase ($29.99 pp) within my app for my 1/20 sailing on the Getaway.

Syd Normans is no longer displayed as an entertainment venue or bar on the Getaway and Escape in NCL marketing or within my app. Passengers on the GA have reported limited entertainment and karaoke as the only entertainment in Syd’s. A posting of the GA daily for the current cruise confirmed karaoke night.

On the Breakaway, Syd’s appears under the Bar and Lounges tab in the Explore Our Ships field, but not an entertainment venue (where it has been consistently advertised for at least the past 8 months).

On the Prima it remains both an entertainment venue and a bar.

Have gone to Syd Norman’s every night. Cancelled theater reservations for tonight to go back to Syd’s. Some of the best entertainment I’ve seen on a ship.

On which ship?  It appears to only be fully operational on Prima.

Pricilla first appeared on the Epic in October 2015 after a major dry dock. We attended the opening show. The show was contracted for a 5 year run (planned to end in 2020). It got an extended life due to the pandemic and the inability to plan and install a new show. It’s time has come. You will have some wonderful entertainment while the next show gets installed.

Say hello to Hailee (the blond) from Kristin. (I just messaged her this week about the whole Syd's issue).

Syd's is no longer on the Breakaway entertainment list but their contract is thru June.

A guide to haugesund, norway, for cruise ship visitors.

Haugesund is one of Norway's most popular cruise destinations.

Located on the southwest coast of Norway, Haugesund is a historic town recognized as one of the country’s premier cruise ports. As a cruise port, it appeals as a gateway to exploring Norway's coastal landscapes and rich Viking heritage.

In 2023, the city welcomed 125 cruise ship visits, accommodating more than 370,000 passengers, thanks to its ability to handle some of the world’s largest vessels.

Among these, Iona , one of Britain’s largest ships with a capacity of 5,206 passengers, makes regular stops here as part of its P&O Cruises Norwegian fjords tour. European focused lines AIDA and Costa Cruises make occasional calls at Haugesund, as do Cunard and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.

Visitors can explore ancient monuments like the Haraldshaugen, stroll along the bustling waterfront, or venture into the surrounding countryside to discover serene trails and traditional farms.

Despite the rising number of visitors, there's no shortage of unique activities to explore on your own, away from the typical cruise line excursions.

Today, the Nordvegen History Center delves into its storied past, revealing rulers known from sagas, archaeological discoveries, and tales of the Norse gods. History here is preserved in an underground museum, brought to life through modern storytelling techniques.

A short walk from the visitor center, the Viking Farm transports you back to the Viking Age with live demonstrations inside and out of reconstructed buildings. The site is particularly engaging for families, offering a range of activities that bring history to life.

Local bus routes 209 and 210 serve Avaldsnes on Karmøy Island from the center of Haugesund, with a journey time of approximately 25 minutes. The history center is a 10-15 minute walk from Avaldsnes.

Extend your Viking Age experience with a visit to Haraldshaugen, also known as the National Monument of Norway. This site commemorates the 9th-century unification of Norway under King Harald Fairhair, and is believed to be his burial place.

According to the medieval book of Norwegian royal sagas, King Harald Fairhair is said to be buried ... [+] here at the National Monument in Haugesund.

A scenic 45-minute walk from the cruise port through central Haugesund and its northern suburbs, the monument offers panoramic views of the North Sea and surrounding landscapes.

The area is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a quiet picnic, absorbing the region’s historical significance at your own pace. On the way, be sure to stop by the statue of King Harald Fairhair, staring out to sea opposite the city park.

If time is short, you can take the five-minute ride on local bus 231 from central Haugesund to the ‘Gard A’ bus stop, just a few minutes walk from the monument.

Several daily ferries make the journey easy, allowing you to explore the island's diverse natural beauty on foot.

Climb to Bråvarden, the island’s highest point, for breathtaking views, or stroll along ‘Proposal Road’ to the Bridge of Love, where couples leave padlocks as tokens of affection. For a more relaxing day, unwind at the small beach or visit the Viking Age graves at Grønasvika.

Røvær is a small group of picturesque islands, home to just over 100 people.

Ferry tickets cost just 70 Norwegian kroner ($6.50) each way. Just be sure to double check the ferry timetable with Kolumbus to make sure you can get back to Haugesund in good time.

Downtown Haugesund

If you find yourself wandering through downtown Haugesund with time to spare, make sure to visit Viking Planet . Here, Haugesund’s Viking Age history is brought to life through immersive virtual reality, 3D presentations, and other digital experiences.

Of course, there’s more to Haugesund’s history than just its Viking roots. Karmsund Folkemuseum reveals the stories of the city’s involvement with shipping, fishing, and agriculture, in the 1,000 years since the Viking Age.

Elsewhere in the city, Our Savior’s Church is a striking red-brick, new Gothic church with a notable tower and room for more than 1,000 people inside. The church is usually free to enter on cruise days, although donations are appreciated.

This Norwegian Cruise sailing takes you on a bucket list adventure: What it's like aboard

F or Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”
