New York Marathon Guide: The BEST Places To Stay For Runners

The New York City Marathon draws in over 50,000 runners and attracts around 2 million spectators from all corners of the globe. With such a significant event, the demand for hotel accommodations is substantial.

Fortunately, the city offers a whopping 110,000 rooms, with approximately two-thirds of them conveniently positioned in Manhattan, near the finish line at Central Park.

If minimizing travel time is a priority, you’ll find lodging options near the start line at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. Alternatively, you can opt for accommodations close to the Midtown Manhattan Bus Center or the Staten Island Ferry Port, both of which are major transportation hubs for the marathon.

Most hotels are conveniently located near the finish line, situated at 67th Street on West Drive near Central Park. Another viable choice is to stay in New Jersey, close to MetLife Stadium, where you’ll take buses to the Fort Wadsworth starting point.

So before I share with you the very best hotels to stay in NY for the Marathon, here are the transportation options you have to know. 

Because the New York Marathon starts on Staten Island and you run across the bridge that gets you to Staten Island (the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge), the bridge is obviously closed for the race, and you need to be in the race Village on the island well before the race starts.

What Are The Official Transportation Options For The NYC Marathon

Staten island ferry.

Departure Location :  Whitehall Terminal, Manhattan

Estimated Travel Time to the Start Line : 90 minutes

You can reach Whitehall Terminal via the 1 train (at South Ferry) and the R and W trains (at Whitehall Street–South Ferry), as well as buses on the M15, M20, and M55 routes. 

The ferry is free and it takes you to St. George Terminal on Staten Island. From there, free buses are available to transport you to Fort Wadsworth.

Midtown Manhattan Bus

Departure Location :  New York Public Library , Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street

The buses will transport you directly to Fort Wadsworth. The New York Public Library is conveniently situated in a central location and can be easily accessed through various subway and bus routes .

New Jersey Bus

Departure Location :  MetLife Stadium Parking Lot K , near the Quest Diagnostics Training Center

Estimated Travel Time to the Start Line : 60 minutes

The bus will take you from MetLife Stadium Parking Lot K directly to Fort Wadsworth. Please note that there is no parking available at this location.

What If I Want To Use My Own Transport?

For the New York City Marathon, I highly recommend that you use the official TCS transportation to get to the start line. 

However, if you decide to use your own private vehicle, there are important things to consider:

  • Taking your own transportation means you’re responsible for getting to the start, which can be difficult due to road closures.
  • You must arrive at the start before 7:00 a.m. when the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge closes to all traffic.
  • Since there won’t be any parking available in Fort Wadsworth, you’ll have drop-off near the i ntersection of Lily Pond Avenue and McClean Avenue outside Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. Keep in mind that there’s a walking distance of about half a mile (approx 1 km) from the drop-off area to the Start Villages. 
  • If you’re coming from New Jersey, you need to make sure that you drop off and clear the Staten Island Expressway by 7:00 a.m., as the expressway will close to vehicles at that time.

If you have secured your New York Marathon spot through a charity partner or tour operator , make sure you check with them. This will help you have a clear understanding of how you’ll be getting to the marathon’s start line.

Some of these partners offer official NYRR transportation, while others arrange for coach buses to pick you up directly from your hotel to designated pick-up points. 

When it comes to accommodations, if you’re running the New York City Marathon, I recommend staying closer to these three locations: 

  • Finish Line (I stayed in a lovely backpackers hostel near Central Park, and so it was great to be able to take a very slow stroll home after the race. It’s also great to get in a few easy shakeout runs in the Park before the race.)
  • Midtown Bus Loading
  • Staten Island Ferry Terminal

What Are The Places To Stay Near New York Marathon Finish Line?

These accommodations are all located within a 20-minute radius of the last mile of the race. Here are my top picks, listed in no particular order:

Empire Hotel

The Empire Hotel stands in close proximity to the Central Park finish line of the New York City Marathon. It boasts a rooftop pool, two restaurants, and cabanas, ensuring a comfortable stay. 

The rooms are elegantly decorated in earth tones and feature bathrooms with enclosed glass shower cubicles. 

After the race, you can unwind at the lobby bar, which serves drinks on the rooftop or by the pool deck.

With a 4-star rating, the Empire Hotel is a mere two blocks away from Central Park and conveniently located across from the Lincoln Center. The 59th St. Subway station, which offers a direct line to the Staten Island Ferry, is a short three-minute walk away.

The Lucerne Hotel, situated on the Upper West Side near Central Park in New York City, is a remarkable establishment. 

The hotel goes the extra mile by offering an on-site fitness center and spa, ensuring that you can stay active and relaxed. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated and equipped with a desk and complimentary bath products, providing a comfortable stay. 

An added bonus is the presence of an on-site French restaurant named Nice Matin , which boasts an outdoor terrace perfect for dining alfresco.

The Lucerne Hotel is positioned around 19 minutes away from the finish line of the NYC Marathon. This 4-star hotel can be found on 79th St., situated between 77th and 81st St., aligning conveniently with post-race runner exit locations. 

It is only half a block away from the 79th St. Subway station, which offers a direct line to the Staten Island Ferry.

La Quinta Inn – Central Park is a highly favored 3-star hotel by many New York marathoners. 

This property offers more than just a place to stay during the marathon. It’s conveniently located near cultural attractions, parks, and museums, allowing you to experience more of New York after the big race. 

I advise you to avoid sightseeing activities in the days leading up to the race to ensure you’re fully prepared for the big day. Focusing on rest and preparation will help you perform at your best during the race.

The hotel is just a quick two-minute walk to the finish line Park and within a five-minute reach of two subway stations.

Trump International Hotel offers a luxurious 5-star experience with stunning views of Central Park. 

Situated at the meeting point of Broadway and Columbus Circle, Trump International New York is just 6 minutes away from the Central Park finish line of the New York City Marathon.

The hotel is positioned near two Subway stations, one with a direct line to the Staten Island Ferry, and the other closest to the runner exit.

Hotel Beacon 

Hotel Beacon, a 4-star establishment situated at 77th and Broadway, offers a convenient three-minute walk to the 79th St. Subway station.

Less than a mile away from the Central Park finish line of the New York City Marathon, Hotel Beacon provides rooms with living areas and kitchenettes, creating serene and comfortable spaces.

The Fairfield Inn & Suites offers a convenient stay within a short walk to the west of the south side of Central Park, making it close to the finish line. 

Situated near Fordham University Lincoln Centre on the southeast side of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this hotel provides comfortable rooms equipped with coffee makers and refrigerators. Onsite amenities include Bar 58 for drinks and a mini-market for convenience goods.

The hotel is at a walking distance of approximately 17 minutes from the marathon’s finishing line.

Located not far from the Central Park finish line of the New York City Marathon, The Hudson New York offers a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. 

With features like a fitness center, an interior lobby garden, and concierge services, this hotel is a welcoming choice. You can enjoy panoramic New York City views and easy access to nearby tourist attractions and city walks. 

This hotel is just a 12-minute walk from the marathon finish line, making it one of the best value options for NYC Marathon accommodations.

Situated on the North side of Hell’s Kitchen in New York, The Watson Hotel is a popular choice for accommodation. It is just a short 15-minute walk from the marathon’s finish line.

This hotel features an onsite restaurant and bar, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool available for use during the warmer summer months. 

The contemporary-styled rooms come fully equipped with air conditioning and private bathrooms. Times Square and the Museum of Modern Art are only 0.8 miles away from the hotel.

What Are The Best Hotels Near NY Public Library (Midtown Manhattan Bus)

On the morning of the race, many runners choose to either hop on the buses at the Public Library on 5th Ave. & 42nd St. or take the Staten Island Ferry to the starting line. 

If you stay close to the midtown bus loading spot, you could sleep in a little on race day and simply walk to the buses. With about 65 hotels within half a mile of this area, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a place to stay nearby.

What’s more, these hotels are conveniently positioned within a short walk of several popular tourist spots like Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center. This makes them a great choice not just for race-day ease but also for exploring the city’s famous sites.

Hyatt Place New York/Midtown-South

Situated in Downtown South Manhattan, the Hyatt Place offers good value. It’s conveniently near the Herald Square subway and a quick walk from the Empire State Building. 

The hotel provides modern, comfy rooms with features like a TV, corner sofa, and fridge. You can enjoy their gym, business center, and free Wi-Fi. Plus, it’s a great starting point for exploring the city and just a short stroll from Times Square.

Hyatt Place is about an 8-minute walk from the Midtown Manhattan bus loading area.

Library Hotel by Library Hotel Collection 

A charming boutique gem, the Library Hotel has a high rating. It’s conveniently close to Midtown Manhattan bus loading, just 3-minutes away.

The distance from the finish line is a 1-mile walk (1.6 km), followed by a 30-minute Subway ride with one line change. Traveling to the Expo via Subway is estimated to take around 30 minutes.

Starting out in 1970, the New York City Marathon 2024 has evolved from a local road race held entirely in Central Park to what is now the world’s largest marathon with a course that runs 26.2 miles through the five boroughs of New York City. Demand for places is high. Starting from the spectacular Verrazano Narrows Bridge on Staten Island and passing through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx before finishing in Central Park, it’s one of the ‘Big Six’ Abbott World Marathon Majors and a marathon with a very generous time limit to finish of 8 hours plus.

Depending on the length of stay you have booked with us you might arrive before or depart on different days to the following itinerary. New York is the ‘city that never sleeps’ with plenty to see and do. The itinerary below reflects the 3 nights package. Adding extra nights or adding an extension package is recommended and allows you the time to enjoy the city and surrounding areas.

Welcome to New York City! Marathon Expo & Welcome Reception

Make your way to New York and on arrival check into your hotel. We are staying at the Sheraton New York Time Square . Ideally situated in midtown Manhattan, the hotel is within walking distance from the expo, Central Park, Times Square and the main sights of New York.

Your Marathon Tours & Travel team will be awaiting your arrival at our welcome desk in the hotel lobby, open from 12:30pm to 16:00pm. Hotel rooms are usually ready after 16:00pm; if you arrive earlier, you can leave your luggage with the hotel concierge and explore the city.

The TCS New York City Marathon 2024 Expo is open for 3 days (Thursday to Saturday) and will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre which is free and open to the public. The Marathon Expo is just a 30 minute walk from the hotel and there is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area, so we suggest you allow time to collect your race documents, shop from the many exhibitors, listen to the experts and enjoy the pre-race vibe. There will be opportunities during the registration process to schedule a time to visit the Expo, you can therefore choose a time to suit you. Detailed directions will be provided in your final instructions or please ask the Marathon Tours & Travel team in the hotel.

This evening enjoy a Welcome Reception with your hosts and running peers. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy this vibrant city.

Shake-out Run, Preparation Day & Dinner

We start the day with an optional training shakeout run through Central Park to loosen your legs. There is an organised race that takes place which you can choose to take part in. To register for and learn more about the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K please see here .

If you didn’t collect your bib yesterday, please do so today. There is no possibility of bib collection on race day. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy, whether you’d like to do some shopping, see a Broadway show or simply relax ahead of the big day.

Our pre-race pasta dinner will begin at 18:00pm, which is conveniently at the hotel.

(Dinner is included).

Race Day & Celebrations!

This is the day you have trained so hard for! Transfer from hotel to the start village and a boxed breakfast is included in your package. The Marathon Tours & Travel staff will be available in the hotel lobby to assist you.

Family and friends can travel by public transport or on foot to support and spectate along the race route. The Marathon Tours & Travel team will be happy to advise.

After the race make your way back to the hotel, freshen up, relax and gaze at your lovely new shiny medal; you worked hard for it!

This evening meet your Marathon Tours & Travel team, fellow runners and supporters for a celebratory toast! After which the evening is free to experience one of the many fine restaurants in the city.

(Breakfast to-go box will be included for runners).

Marathon Tours & Travel’s policy is that anyone staying in our room block must be part of our package. If you plan to bring a spouse or guest, they must purchase our package. For example, if there are two of you, the rate would be the double occupancy rate (per person). If you purchase a single occupancy rate package, then only you are allowed in your room. To attend any of our activities, you must be part of our package.

RACE TIME :  There are four wave starts for runners, preceded by professional wheelchair athletes, hand-cycles, and professional elite runners.  Wave times will be available closer to the race date.

CHARITABLE OBJECTIVE:  The Official Charity Partners of the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon will be added to the TCS New York City Marathon website when available.

COURSE:  The TCS New York City Marathon 2024 is a 26.2-mile block party through the world’s most diverse city. It goes through the five boroughs of New York City: Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island.

TEMPERATURE:  New York City’s average temperature for early November is a low of 42 and a high of 57.  Be sure to check the weather forecast before packing to make sure you are prepared.

GUARANTEED ENTRY PROCEDURE : Entry can only be confirmed when you purchase the Marathon Tours & Travel Package. There is a limit of two (2) entries per hotel room. Entries are limited and will be confirmed on a first-serve basis. Once your entry is confirmed with Marathon Tours & Travel, further instructions will be provided regarding your race entry.  All runners must complete the online TCS New York City Marathon Waiver in order to participate.

ELIGIBILITY : Marathon Tours & Travel, an authorised tour operator, is required to offer travel arrangements in conjunction with guaranteed race entry. All runners must be 18 years or older on race day to be eligible for our guaranteed entries.

COURSE TIME LIMIT : In the interest of safety, and to allow streets and park drives to reopen as scheduled, the race course will remain open to all participants who are able to maintain a 13:45 per-mile pace (based on the time when the last runner crosses the start line).

Sweep buses follow the marathon route at a 6 1/2-hour marathon pace (about 15 minutes/mile) after the final wave start. These buses will transport any entrant who wishes to drop out to the post-finish area.

After the sweep buses pass, the city streets reopen to traffic. Cross-street protection, medical assistance, aid stations, and other services are no longer available. Runners on the course should move onto the sidewalks. The finish-line scoring stays in place until 19:30 p.m.

WAIVER:  Every runner must sign the online NYRR Waiver. A link will be sent to all registered runners with a guaranteed entry from Marathon Tours & Travel.

NUMBER PICKUP:  You must visit the Health & Wellness Expo to pick up your bib. Details will be posted when available. Visit the NYRR Frequently Asked Questions  page for more information.

Starting Pens and Bib Numbers

Although we are licensed to sell official entries for the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon, we have no influence over the allocation of starting times and bib numbers.

Closer to the event we will send you a link which will allow you to complete the registration process for the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. Once you have finalised the registration process, the race organisers will allocate you a starting time and bib based on the information provided.

Credit card

All hotels in New York need a credit card imprint upon check in where a value is held and released when you check out. Any incidentals such as room service or chargeable extras to the room would be deducted.

Security Policy

Marathon Tours & Travel’s security policy requires that anyone staying in our room block must be registered as part of our package. If a registered client attempts to house a non-registered guest and/or invite them to attend any of our scheduled activities, the registered guest’s tour package will be forfeited, and parties may be denied access to future tours. Please note that no exceptions will be made as this policy will be strictly enforced.

TCS NYC Marathon Weekend Travel Guide

When I found out that I had qualified for the TCS NYC marathon, I could not describe the emotions I felt. My favorite city, my favorite sport. I knew the race would have an impact on me but I had no idea how big of an impact it would make. The motto is, “It will move you.” I’m not saying it cHaNgEd mY LiFe, but the motto fits perfectly. I was brought to tears after I finished and not because I was in so much pain from running!

For all the non-runners out there, I totally get it if you think us runners are crazy for running in general, let alone a marathon. My own husband thinks it but even he was amazed at how great this race is.

Even if you’ve been to the city multiple times, experiencing TCS NYC marathon weekend is a different beast. For a day-by-day guide to everything you need to know for marathon weekend including what I learned and what I would do differently, take a peak below. This guide encompasses more than just the marathon and is meant to be helpful for anyone running and spectators.

Wondering how you’ll get around the city if you’re just a spectator? One word — the subway. It is and always will be your best friend in the city. TCS NEW YORK CITY MARATHON EXPO

The first thing to do on your NYC marathon weekend is head to the expo. The expo is held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and runs (pun intended) all weekend beginning the Thursday of marathon weekend up until Saturday night. If you’re looking for an opportunity to go when there are fewer people, try early in the morning. If you want to be there when all the hustle and bustle is going on, go in the afternoon or anytime after five.

Ya’ll I am not ashamed to say that I totally geeked out here. I did not want to leave. You also don’t have to run to check out the expo. You’ll see booths lined along the pavilion offering some freebies like energy gels and it’s a great opportunity to meet other runners, even some of the elite’s! And, if you didn’t already, you can buy TCS NYC marathon merch here during the weekend. I went a little bit crazy with my purchases.

After the expo, head back down to the Financial District. We decided to stay in this area for the TCS NYC marathon weekend because of the convenience of it. For reference, we stayed at the Double Tree in the Financial District. You can check availability here . Be sure to plan in advance as hotels book up quickly on marathon weekend!

I don’t recommend staying here if it’s your first time . However, the location is super convenient if you decide to take the ferry to the start line. The ferry and bus are the only means of transportation to the start line. It’s important to understand that you have to use the transportation they provide due to start times and logistics. Staying in the financial district will allow you to be closest to the ferry so you don’t have to wake up as early.

TRINITY PLACE

If you’re looking for a quaint restaurant for dinner with some history, Trinity Place has got it. It’s located in the Financial District and was originally a bank vault dating back to 1904. To top it off, it even has the original bank vault doors as you enter the main room.

If you’re running the next day, you probably won’t be doing all of the exciting things that NYC has to offer. But, you can still get some sight seeing before the big race.

TOMPKINS SQUARE BAGELS

To start my day in the city, an NYC bagel is a must. While Ess-a-bagel has my heart, I wanted to try something new. We headed to Tompkins Square Bagels for just that. It was nearly as good as Ess-a, but with more of a local vibe.

After grabbing some bagels and coffee to go, head for a stroll through Tompkins Square Park to enjoy the view.

EXPLORE MANHATTAN

To ease into the day, stroll around Manhattan and explore the iconic landmarks. Ironically, for having visited NYC a few times, I had never seen the Flat Iron Building or NYC Public Library. Both are so full of history and I was kicking myself for not checking them out sooner.

Leading up to race day, I don’t like to stray too far from my typical meals. Nothing out of the ordinary. That means a pretty standard lunch and not the pasta-inducing coma that I so desperately wanted from NYC! I had heard about CHLOE from a few people and wanted to check it out. It’s a great spot for a healthy but filling option. It also serves many different diet restrictions and is helpful for meal prepping for race day.

Ok, so I’m a bit of a worry wart when it comes to race day and the night before. If you’re anything like me, I need something to help me stop thinking about the race and everything that comes with it. To do that, explore the city and head to Broadway for a show over your NYC marathon weekend. I had been dying to see Aladdin and it did not disappoint! The genie segment is a sight to see. I highly recommend checking out this show when visiting.

MULBERRY AND VINE

Another thing you will learn about me is I like to stick to what I know when things are out of my control — like race day! 🙂 That means, I wanted to eat somewhere I knew wouldn’t upset my stomach and I had been to before. If you’ve read my NYC guide for the first timer , you’ll know that I absolutely fell in love with this spot on my first visit to NYC. They have healthy but hearty meals making it the perfect spot to fuel up before the big day. You can also buy tickets for the pre-race dinner held at Tavern on the Green.

The night before a race, I’m sure there are a couple of rituals that you do. I take the time to write out my splits a couple of times and use the virtual map to pinpoint what times I should be hitting at certain checkpoints. This helps me visualize the race and put me in the right mindset. I also set out my clothes the night before so everything is in exactly the right place when I wake up.

DAY 3: RACE DAY

Staying in the Financial District definitely has its perks if you choose to take the Ferry. Based on what corral you are in will determine which Ferry time you’ll take. I was one of the first corrals to go, which meant I had to be up early.

STATEN ISLAND FERRY

If you’ve never seen the Statue of Liberty, the ferry is one of the coolest parts of the marathon. It takes you all the way to Staten Island passing Lady Liberty on the way. Oh, and you get escorted by the Coast Guard. How cool is that?

START, WAVE, CORRAL

The worst part about big races is the wait time. Since the roads you’ll be running on close down, they have to get everyone to the start line and in the corrals as early as they can.

The NYC marathon is massive, the biggest in the United States, which means there are not only multiple corrals but multiple waves and start times. If you want a better understanding of what those mean, their site explains it all.

  • There are many tips I have for race day. The biggest being, layer up! Wear clothes that you can ditch at the start line or along the course. They won’t go to waste as bins are located all along the start so they can be donated to Goodwill. If you ditch them throughout the race, volunteers are on hand to pick them up.
  • Another tip, bring something to sit on. This race is in November and it can be frigid cold in the morning. You will want something to sit on to stay dry. There are some booths at the start that will offer yoga mats, but those get taken up pretty quickly.
  • Warm up BEFORE you get into your corral. You’ll be sitting at the start line for about an hour to an hour and a half before you even begin the race. I made the worst mistake thinking I could warm up in the corral. Nope.
  • If you’re like me, you don’t like to eat before you race. But, you have to force yourself to eat something before a marathon. The start will have free banana’s, granola bars and even donuts (not sure how people race with that in their stomach) which you can take advantage of. Or, to keep up with your typical race-day ritual, bring your own breakfast on the way over.

You will be asked to get into your corral about 30 minutes before the gun goes off. It’s honestly like herding cattle as it’s still a walk to the start from the corral. I know it’s cheesy, but use this time to take in all that you’ve accomplished so far. I know looking out into the crowd and listening to the National Anthem definitely brought a tear to my eye. Once the gun goes off, you’ll be thrown into one of the best races in the country the race that you won’t even realize you’re about to climb your first major hill.

CHECKPOINTS

If you have friends or family coming to see you race, you will definitely want to plan out checkpoints on the course beforehand so they can come and cheer you on. B and I planned to have him meet me at Mile 16 and Mile 22 — those checkpoints are always when my body likes to tell me to please stop running.

Being that the race is a point A to point B route rather than a loop, you will probably only get to see your entourage about 1-2 times on the course so make sure it’s at points you’ll need the most encouragement. The easiest way to do to get around NYC during marathon weekend will be by subway. Your friends and family won’t miss you if they download the TCS NYC marathon app and track you throughout the race. It’s a lifesaver.

FINISH AND FAMILY REUNION

After the race is over and you cross the finish line in Central Park all you want is a hug from your family and to sit down. Well, be prepared for a 1.5 mile of walking ahead of you instead. That’s how long it takes to get out of Central Park after your race and to get to the Family Reunion spot. That’s not even considering if you have a bag to pick up. If you want to get the Marathon Race Jacket like above, then I recommend opting out of the bag check. Plus, they are super warm!

SENZA GLUTEN & POSH POP BAKERY

After celebrating a good race, it’s time to recharge with pasta and dessert! For just that, head over to Greenwich Village for Senza Gluten. All of their items are gluten free and delicious. Also, don’t resist indulging in some chocolate cake from Posh Pop. You deserve it after 26.2!

BALTHAZAR & home sweet home

After recharging from the race, it’s time to celebrate for dinner. Opt for a reservation at Balthazar. I had been dying to try this place. This French restaurant has a great wine selection and delicious food. They are also well known for their brunch! After dinner, stop by one of the many low key bars in the area. We chose to grab a few at Home Sweet Home.

JACK’S WIFE FRIEDA

After a morning of sleeping in, grab brunch at Jack’s Wife Frieda in SOHO. Oh my. This place was so so good and can’t recommend it enough. Don’t miss out on this spot.

CHA CHA MATCHA

Another place that has been on my list to try is Cha Cha Matcha. Not only is the decor esthetically pleasing, they have great matcha. Just look at those cute napkins! Take your matcha’s to go and explore SOHO or sip inside while enjoying the vibe and decor.

As any Swiftie (or non-Swiftie) knows, New York is the place, especially if you’re in your fall marathon era. One of the six World Marathon Majors, the New York City Marathon is one of the hardest marathons in the world to get into, despite allowing 50,000+ runners to participate each year. But it’s for good reason– the marathon is a point-to-point race that winds through all five boroughs of the city, accompanied by wall-to-wall crowds that almost feels like a rock concert at times. It’s everything you could ever want in a race.

Of course, there’s a ton of work leading up to that moment. Early mornings, early nights, months of training, days of travel, and a whole bunch of money spent in the pursuit of a dream. You worked hard for it, and none of that effort should go to waste.

We want you to be fully prepared for everything that lies ahead, which is why we put together this insider’s guide to the New York City Marathon. We called on a handful of runners who are very familiar with the race, including former NYC residents and multiple-time finishers Jess Movold and Ashley Mateo, sports dietician Meghann Featherstun, and lifelong New York City resident and 2022 finisher Nick Calandra. Combined, they’ve finished the New York City Marathon 17 times over the last decade.

We promise you won’t find a better insider’s guide than this.

A lot of race apps suck– they’re clunky, hard to use, and not always up-to-date with their features. The TCS NYC Marathon App is not one of them, and it includes a ton of new features this year.

If you’re running the race, the most important feature is using it to access your confirmation page so you can streamline your bib pickup at the expo.

Obviously you’ll be able to track all your favorite runners (and friends you’ll be running with), but it goes even further than that. New to this year, the app offers a Course Camera feature that lets fans watch a live feed of their favorite runners at five key points along the course– the start, mile 8 in Brooklyn, mile 17 in the Upper East Side, mile 20 in the Bronx, and at the finish in Central Park.

The pro race livestream will also feature stats from all four pro races and live commentary from Olympians Des Linden and Galen Rupp, and Paralympian Amanda McGrory. Also included is a spectator guide so your friends and family can create an itinerary with the best directions for spotting you during the race.

Where To Stay

As Drake would say: If you’re reading this, it’s too late. We’re only a couple weeks out from the New York City Marathon at this point, and you should already have your accommodations figured out. After all, the Big Apple is gonna be full of you and thousands of your closest runner friends, and everyone needs a bed — not to mention all of the friends and family traveling in for the race.

Packing & Travel

The last thing — and we mean the last  thing — anyone should do is try to drive their car into New York City ahead of race day. As if driving in New York wasn’t bad enough, race day will bring road closures and extra crowds into the equation. With that in mind, it’s time to rejoice at the fact that NYC has some pretty solid public transit options.

We travel from Baltimore, so we’re huge fans of Amtrak, which drops us off at Penn Station, which is about as central of a location as you can get for Manhattan. If you’re traveling by plane, know that both JFK and LaGuardia may be a decent drive to your lodgings. Keep a separate budget for your Uber rides.

Of course, what’s great about NYC is the wide array of transportation options. Uber, Lyft, and old school taxis are all obvious options for above-ground travel. However, the easiest (and cheapest) way to get around is most certainly the subway. If you’ve never traveled on public transportation in NYC, it can be a little intimidating, but the system is honestly quite simple and Google Maps easily integrates it into your options.

Then there’s bike shares and e-bikes, but use at your own risk– it gets a little wild on those Midtown streets.

If you’ve never traveled to a major marathon (or any marathon), there’s a few key things you need to know. We covered this in our Boston Marathon Guide , but we’ll do it again here.

We’ve traveled a ton over the last few years, from London to Tokyo to Chicago (Berlin, we’re coming for you). We’ve made plenty of mistakes, but we’ve learned a lot.

The number one rule of destination races is this: DON’T LET YOUR RACE GEAR LEAVE YOUR SIDE. That means, you put your $275 race day shoes in your carry on, or around your neck, or down your pants (if that’s your thing). Whatever works, just keep them with you. (We recommend putting your shoes in either a waterproof bag or something like the Nike Shoe Box bag or the Mudroom Running Backpack , just to keep them separate.)

This goes for anything you need on race day– nutrition, hydration bottle, socks, singlet, etc. There is nothing worse than stressing out about your essentials the day before your big performance. It’s an unnecessary and it’s easily preventable.

Also, if you fly more than once a year, just get TSA Pre-Check. It lasts for 5 years and it’s well worth the convenience factor, even it does feel like some sort of luxury tax scheme from the federal government.

Plan Your Race Weekend

In many ways, the New York City Marathon is just a celebration of your months of hard work. You’ve already put in the miles, and there’s plenty of fun to be had the day before the race itself — and by fun, we mean shakeout runs.

Granted, you’re running a marathon on Sunday, so as exciting as all these events may be, you really only want to pick one or two. Here’s where we pitch our shakeout run with New Balance on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Let’s be real, it’s going to be the best event of the whole weekend, so just be there.

As for everything else, we’ll let Jess (former NYC resident and 9x finisher of the race) make sure you’re thinking of everything.

JESS (9x Finisher) : If you haven’t realized this yet, you’re in for a real treat: Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. on the day of the marathon, meaning that yes– you get an extra hour of sleep. Or an extra hour of tossing and turning, depending on your pre-race nerve levels.

But before we even get to that point, here are some tips that I’ve learned after running the race nine times. I promise you, if you’ll do these things you’ll have a (relatively) stress-free weekend.

MAKE A PLAN/SCHEDULE FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND. All caps and all bold because I mean it.

Do not leave it until the last minute to figure out the following details: 

➤ Where the expo is (Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, Halls 3B, 3D, and 3E, at 11th Avenue at West 36th Street) and when you should pick up your bib (see all the details here )

➤ How to get to your designated transportation on race morning. Will you take an Uber? Are you going to walk to the buses in Midtown? Are you going to take the subway to South Ferry/Whitehall for the Staten Island Ferry on race morning? Figure all of this out well in advance.

➤ Do you want a checked bag waiting for you at the finish? Figure this out and if you do, you must drop your bag at the bag drop in Central Park no later than Saturday afternoon. That means you probably don’t want to check your phone like I used to do back in the day. That means thinking about: Are you going to run the marathon with your phone? Are you going to leave it at home/the hotel and find a way to get home with no cell phone once you’re finished?

I know. It’s a lot to decide. But you have to figure it out now . I’m leaning towards running with no phone but I have my morning commute locked in. It might not be smart to travel alone with no phone. Do you have the gear you need to run with your phone? Keep in mind, hydration bladders or backpacks are not allowed in the starting area, so you’re looking at a running belt, pocket, or bra as your options for phone transportation.

➤ Where/what/when will you eat throughout the weekend? Have it planned in advance. Every meal. D ecide where you’re going to eat the night before the race, as well as the afternoon/evening afterwards. Especially if you’re traveling with friends or family and looking to go somewhere special– get your reservations in now .

New York City is an exciting but exhausting place to visit. Carry water and snacks on you at all times so you can sip on hydration and avoid depleting yourself before race day. (Somewhere Meg Featherstun is reading this and clapping!)

DON’T OVERTHINK YOUR PLAN JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE HAS A DIFFERENT ONE. Yes, all caps again because I mean it. 

In my opinion, this marathon in particular can be one of the most overwhelming and intimidating marathons, and I’m not even talking about the marathon itself. This is a major marathon in a major city that requires high level organization, planning, and logistics. There are many ways to plan . Just because someone has a different plan than you, do not assume their plan is better. Make your plan. Make sure it works for you . Then study it and stick to it.

NICK (NYC Resident): Firstly, have a plan beforehand and give yourself ample time to make your way over to the starting area in Staten Island. Just getting over to the start line can feel like a marathon all in itself, depending on where you’re staying the night before.

If you plan on taking the Ferry over to Staten Island, then be prepared for long queues for the buses at the ferry terminal. I’ve heard a few horror stories from last year of some runners having to wait almost 2 hours to get on a bus after getting off the ferry. So I would advise everyone to make your way over to the start as early as possible no matter what your start time is.

Lastly, save a little extra cash for those NYC souvenirs. Running brands will have (or already have) a unique selection of one-off gear just for the marathon. Whether that’s a marathon jacket or a custom NYC singlet, make sure you grab special to remember your accomplishment.

Of course, planning on getting to the start and away from the finish are major marathons all in themselves, so let’s dig into all that.

Race Day Nutrition

MEGHANN (Sports Dietician) : With the later start times for the NYC marathon, we want to plan out our pre-run nutrition so we don’t get to the start line with a growling stomach that’s ready for a full meal of lunchtime food. Plan to eat twice before your race. You will be awake 5+ hours before your marathon start time with the commute into Staten Island.

Plan to eat your first breakfast as soon as you wake up . This breakfast should include 50-100 grams of carbohydrates , plus some protein and fat. This could be one large NYC bagel and a big scoop of peanut butter, washed down with a serving of your favorite sports drink. If you are in the two latest waves, you may want to think about something even more substantial like an egg and cheese on a bagel, and a banana. 

You’ve eaten one breakfast and you are heading on the bus or ferry for Staten Island. Make sure to pack your second breakfast, which you will eat 2 hours before your start time. Eat what you normally eat pre-long run. This will be another 50-100 grams of carbohydrates with minimal added protein or fats. If you normally eat 6-7 graham crackers before a long run, pack your sleeve of graham crackers. Or, pack another bagel and banana. Don’t forget to pack a bottle of your favorite electrolyte drink to sip during your wait time in Staten Island. 

Pro tip: Make sure you adhere to the prohibited item guidelines: No glass containers, coolers, bottles over 1 liter, or any bags that are not clear are allowed in the start area.

In Staten Island, there will be water, Gatorade Endurance, Science in Sport Protein Bars, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and bagels– while supplies last. Don’t bank on this for your second breakfast and please don’t try anything new on race morning! 

During the race, on course fluid stops start at mile 3 and are almost every mile until mile 25, with the exception of miles 5, 7, and 9 which do not have a fluid stop. In other words, runners have 20 opportunities to take water or lemon lime Gatorade Endurance on the course. The water on course is Flow Alkaline Spring Water. No matter what anyone says, this is just normal water and will not cause cramping or GI issues on course. This water will work just fine.

If you prefer to carry your own electrolyte drink, do it. But, the NYC marathon does not allow packs with a bladder inside. You can, however, carry a vest with flasks in the front. If you want to skip the crowded fluid stops, consider carrying your own handheld bottle filled with your favorite electrolyte drink and tossing it when it is gone. You’ve probably used it for a few training cycles and got your money out of it. The fluid stations get slightly less crowded after the second half. 

Be sure to carry your own fuel with you! The marathon does not provide gels until miles 12 and 18. If you want to finish with a smile on your face, make sure you are fueling early and often with your favorite gel or chews. Start fueling at 20-30 minutes into the race and keep that fueling cadence up until the end. 

Pro tip : Get creative with your fuel storage. Favorite places to carry fuel includes waist belts, shorts pockets, handheld or hydration vest pockets, tucked into arm sleeves, safety pinned to the waistband of shorts, in pockets of a sports bra, or between two sports bras.

Don’t be afraid to stuff an extra fuel or two in case you need more on race day or drop one in the shuffle. The gels available on course are Science in Sport. They have orange, lemon-lime, tutti frutti, and tropical. They also offer a caffeinated option, which contains 75 mg caffeine and is citrus flavored. Make sure you know which ones you’re grabbing. If you’re into real food out there on the course, there will be bananas available at miles 21 and 23. And of course, random food and/or alcoholic beverages from strangers (maybe not great for a PR). 

To sum it up, in order to crush your NYC marathon, plan for two breakfasts:  One as soon as you get up, and the other 2 hours pre-race. Make sure to pack all your race fuel and hydration in a clear bag and stash that away when it’s go time. Fuel early. Fuel often. And, most importantly– have a blast out there.

Pre-Race Morning

JESS (9x Finisher) : Layers, layers, and more layers. If you’re planning now, you can go through your closet and find things you do not mind parting with and put them to the side. Layer on everything for your commute to the start and long wait time at the Athletes Village. If you’re traveling to NYC and don’t want to overload your suitcase, hit up Goodwill or TJ Maxx for some cheap throwaways that you can put in the donation bin just before the start. 

There are donation bins in the corrals and along the way on the long walk from your corral to the start line. 

Pro tip: Do not toss everything especially if it’s cold. You will have lots of chances to strip down to your race gear so don’t start tossing layers until you’re at least in your corral. Make sure to stay warm all the way up to the start. 

ASHLEY (6x Finisher) : Bring a portable charger/cord you don’t mind throwing away to Staten Island–you’ll be sitting there for hours, and this allows you to use your phone freely without stressing about draining the battery. Lots of layers so you don’t waste any energy shivering are key, too—I’ve even brought throwaway shoes so I don’t have to walk around in my race shoes (there’s a decent amount of walking between the buses/ferry and the corrals). 

NICK (NYC Resident) : This goes without saying, but the New York City weather is known for being very unpredictable. Be prepared to be waiting outside in the starting area for a long period of time. Check the weather and make sure to have throw away layers (pants, sweater, hat, gloves, etc) to keep on as you wait to start, maybe even a disposable poncho and old sneakers to wear in the starting area just in case of rain. 

Race Morning Essentials

ROBBE : Depending how you feel about waste, consider buying an inflatable raft or inner tube from Five Below and bringing it to the Staten Island field. This will give you a comfortable spot to relax before the race, and a nice alternative to the cold, hard ground. We saw some people doing this last year and thought it was pretty genius. But then again, you will be buying a plastic raft for one-time use. So maybe ask someone in your neighborhood if they have any old pool floats they were going to get rid of. This will ease your environmental conscience.

JESS: Pay attention to when your corral closes. You really don’t want to miss that for obvious reasons. If for some reason you miss it or want to run in a later wave with a friend, you can go later. You cannot go earlier.

THE START OF THE NYC MARATHON

JESS : If it’s cold, keep on a layer, or a hat, or gloves for the first mile or so. The Verrazano Bridge is extremely windy, especially on the top. 

Do not bob and weave on the Verrazano Bridge. Save your energy and just take it easy. Don’t stress or spend energy trying to get around other runners. Be patient. 

ASHLEY : Don’t freak out about starting slow on the uphill of the Verrazano, you’ll make up all that time without expending any extra effort on the steep downhill in mile 2. 

Runners are divided into three color groups at the start of the race: orange, blue, and green. The courses vary slightly in the first 5K, and the runners are still separated through mile 8. But at mile 8, when you turn onto Lafayette Avenue—a really beautiful tree-lined Brooklyn street—everyone finally converges, making for a super crowded section of the course (last year, I came to a full stop at that turn). There’s no real way around this, but don’t freak out, it doesn’t last long. 

NICK : I know it’s easier said than done (especially with the crowds & energy in Brooklyn) but try your best to start off slow . As everyone probably already knows or has heard by now, NYC is not the flattest or fastest marathon course out there. There will be plenty of hills/inclines, especially in the later miles of the race. The first couple of miles tend to be very crowded so try not to use up excess energy by weaving around other runners.

THE MIDDLE OF THE NYC MARATHON

JESS: Don’t overdo it in Brooklyn. Fort Greene (Mile 8) is a party and the vibes are high. The crowds are roaring and the DJs are turned up to eleven. Enjoy it. Soak it in. Just be mindful of how you’re spending your energy and the pace you are trying to hold. Brooklyn is full of energy from the minute you step off the Verrazano Bridge all the way until you head to Queens. Make sure you’re not overdoing it too early, you still have over half the race to go as the halfway point is just before you exit Brooklyn. 

ASHLEY : Overall, Brooklyn is relatively flat and fast (especially considering the second half of this race). As Jess said, don’t get tricked into pushing the pace here. If you PR the first half, you will hate the final 10 miles, I learned this the hard way (multiple times).

NICK: Once you enter Brooklyn it’s pretty much a straight shot up 4th ave all the way to mile 8. This is the part of the race where you definitely want to conserve energy and get into a nice comfortable pace. Miles 8-10 tend to be some of the loudest miles of the race so definitely take in the energy of the crowds but still try to stay at that comfortable/conservative pace

Ironically, after passing mile 10 the atmosphere almost immediately changes and you enter into one of the quietest sections of the race, as you run through the very Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of South Williamsburg. This is a good time to regroup and prepare yourself for the next bridge as you make your way towards Queens.

ASHLEY : There are five bridges—the first one is the steepest but the third one is the grueling Queensborough Bridge at miles 15-16. It comes at a tougher part of the race, and there are no spectators. Take your time with it and maintain effort if not pace on the uphill, using the quiet as a chance to regroup and mentally set yourself up for success in the last 10 miles.

Pro tip: Don’t worry about pace on the Queensboro Bridge. Use gravity and the cheers of the crowd coming off the bridge (they call this “the wall of sound” because the crowds are like 10 people deep) to pick up the pace as you head down to First Avenue. 

JESS : Do not let negative thoughts creep in on the Queensboro Bridge (Mile 15). There are no spectators allowed here. It can feel long and daunting. Slow down if you need to conserve energy, but try to keep moving forward. Focus on getting off the bridge!

First Avenue will be waiting for you with lots of cheering and strong crowd support. If you’re suffering on this bridge, encourage the other runners around you. Bring the morale up by cheering for others and soon you’ll be surrounded by high energy and good vibes.

ASHLEY: People may tell you the Bronx isn’t as crowded with spectators as other parts of the course, but that’s definitely changed in recent years—you’ve got several run clubs waiting to welcome you into the borough, and their energy (and dance music) is an awesome boost as you approach mile 20. 

NICK:  Be prepared for inclines during the second half of the race. I know everyone mentions the bridges but I personally think the most challenging incline/hill of the race is the long stretch on 5th Avenue from mile 22 until you enter Central Park (for the first time) at mile 24. This part of the race can feel grueling, especially if you went out too fast. Just keep in mind that 5th Avenue is a long gradual incline, even if you don’t notice it at first. The good news is that the crowds are absolutely insane, so at least you’ll feel that energy as you get closer to the finish.

ASHLEY : I agree with Nick: I think First and Fifth Avenues are some of the hardest parts of the race. You’re in the final 10K of a marathon and you’re basically on a steady grind of a climb for the rest of the race. First Avenue isn’t so bad, but Fifth Avenue is rough . If you have friends/family spectating, have them go to First and Fifth Avenues—if they start on runner’s left on First, they’ll be able to run/walk/bike west just a few blocks to catch you before you enter Central Park around 90th St. The crowd is definitely a little thinner between 23 and 24, so this is a great spot for a boost from spectators.

THE FINISH OF THE NYC MARATHON

ASHLEY : When you enter Central Park, you feel like an Olympian thanks to the crowds, and you’ve got a nice downhill to take advantage of for a bit. But–  don’t forget that you have to leave Central Park with just about a mile to go before re-entering closer to the finish line. It feels longer than it is!

Don’t have people try to meet you at the finish line; cell phone service is terrible and there’s a ton of walking involved just to get out of Central Park. Like, seriously, you have to walk over a half mile to get out of the park at West 77th Street. Then you have to walk another half mile the whole way back down the West Side just to get to the Family Reunion area between West 63rd Street and West 66th (you can learn more about the area here ). In any case, pick a location decently far from the finish line for them to wait, and you can meet them there.

If you’re meeting people after the race, stick to the West Side of Manhattan! It’s nearly impossible to find cabs, and few will attempt to cross over to the East Side due to marathon-related traffic. Staying put for celebrations is your best bet (otherwise, plan on taking the train—but know you’ll have to navigate lots of stairs).

NICK : Have a plan before race day on how you’re making it back to your hotel or meeting up with family/friends. I would suggest against taxi or Uber because a lot of the streets in Manhattan will still be closed and the ones that are open will most likely be gridlocked.

If you’re not staying in Midtown or somewhere within walking distance of the finish, then hands-down, your best bet will be the subway. However, as someone who has been dealing with the MTA/public transit since I was in high school, the best advice I can give is to expect the unexpected. The MTA loves to re-route trains and do track maintenance (especially on the weekends) so I would advise to go onto the MTA trip planner website the day before the race to see what trains are running and which ones you will need to take back to where you are staying. 

Pro Tip: Buy a pre-valued Metrocard before race day so you don’t have to deal with long lines in the stations post race. The less standing the better.

Spectating Tips

JESS : Do not make a sign that says “YOU’RE ALMOST THERE” unless you plan on standing at Mile 26.

Do not cross the course. Especially in Central Park. Runners are tired, working hard, and don’t need the risk of falling due to spectators during the race. If you must: be direct, go fast, and be extremely mindful of the runners around you. 

Pro tip: If you’re spectating, tell your runners which side of the road you will be on so they can have a better chance of finding you. Make sure to use Runner’s Left or Runner’s Right so it’s coming from their perspective and will know exactly what you mean. 

ASHLEY : If you have friends spectating and you want to see them a couple of times, have them start in Williamsburg around mile 11; from there, they can easily get on the L train and switch to the NQR which goes up to the Upper East Side. Once they see you on First Avenue, they can also easily catch you on Fifth Avenue.

Here’s how to do this: If they start on runner’s left on First, they’ll be able to run/walk/bike west just a few blocks to catch you before you enter Central Park around 90th St. The crowd is definitely a little thinner between 23 and 24, so this is a great spot for a boost from spectators.

NICK : As for spectators, some of the most popular places for spectators are 1st and 5th ave in Manhattan. However those avenues tend to be very crowded so it might be hard to find family or friends in the crowd as you are racing. If your friends or family are familiar with getting around the city on the subway, some less crowded areas to spot them would be on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn (Bay Ridge & Sunset Park neighborhoods) or miles 13-15 in Queens.

Final Thoughts

The New York City Marathon will go down as one of the most exhilarating moments of your life. There’s just nothing that can compare to the absolute madness of the crowds and the collective energy of 60,000-plus runners as you run through all five boroughs in the most iconic city on planet Earth. Great information. Thanks for sharing. FYI, the villages this year will be orange, blue and pink. They have gotten rid of the green village. Orange and blue start on the top of the bridge, while pink starts on the lower level — heard it on the Ali on the Run podcast

What It’s Actually Like to Run the New York City Marathon Route

Want to feel like the most beloved person on the planet? All you have to do is run 26.2 miles through New York City on Marathon Sunday.

Talya Minsberg will be running her ninth consecutive New York City Marathon, if you count the time she ran the course in Nov. 2020.

The New York City Marathon is not where world records are set.

Those blazing times are clocked on flat and fast courses in Chicago, Berlin and London. Runners there can easily be dropped off by a cab shortly before the starting gun, yawn and get going.

This is New York.

This is a marathon for 50,000 people who go on a public transportation odyssey to reach a brutally challenging course that crosses five bridges and five boroughs.

It’s a race for runners who want to prove this city deserves to be called the greatest on the planet, home of the greatest marathon in the world.

Marathon Sunday might as well be a holiday. It’s a reason to cheer on a random person doing a random thing on a random day for God knows what reason, but hey — go you. Write your name on your T-shirt, and you’ll feel like a celebrity for 26.2 miles.

Here’s a guide to the New York City Marathon, from the vantage point of its 50,000 lucky runners.

The Marathon Before the Marathon

To run the New York City Marathon, you’ve got to get to the start line.

If you aren’t taking a chartered bus over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge before it closes to traffic, you will probably take some combination of a cab, a subway, a ferry and a bus. You will soon know enough about public transit to run the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state agency that oversees the subway and buses.

If you get confused by the maps and the logistics, follow the people wearing layers of fuzzy clothing and carrying bananas and water bottles in clear plastic bags. They’ll lead you to the starting village.

Settle In to the Starting Village

On the map for the marathon, you’ll see a big dot denoting the start line. What you won’t see is the sprawling village there — a holding area for the tens of thousands of people nervously waiting to be called up for their turn.

There are tents with therapy dogs and tents with coffee. There are tents with groups stretching and tents with bagels. There are 1,700 toilets and an unbelievable number of people in line for their pre-race poop. You can laugh, but it will be you soon enough.

Frank Sinatra, Send Us Off

Finally, your wave of runners is called to the start line. Suddenly, you are at the base of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and military and police officers are restraining your energy with strings (really). With the sound of a cannon, the officers let you go free, and Frank Sinatra welcomes you to the streets of New York.

But remember that you are at the base of a two-mile bridge. That means your legs will be forced to slow just a bit, and that’s a good thing. Look to your left. See Manhattan? One World Trade Center? The Empire State Building?

Don’t get too excited too quickly — you have a lot of miles ahead of you.

‘Welcome to Brooklyn’

There’s usually someone holding a sign at the other end of the bridge welcoming you to Brooklyn. They are the first of the millions of spectators who will greet you in their neighborhoods.

Turn right onto Fourth Avenue and lock in. Four and a half miles straight through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park and Park Slope will slingshot you to Downtown Brooklyn.

The crowds on Fourth Avenue build as you get closer to Barclays Center, and it’s easy to get carried away. Salute the bands, give high-fives to children and thank the volunteers handing out water. You already have eight miles under you.

Some of the best parties on the course happen on the stoops of brownstones along Lafayette Avenue. There will be music. There will be dancing. Take that energy in and give it right back. Dance a bit, smile and thank everyone for cheering you on.

Now hold that crowd support close. You’ll need it later.

Doughnuts in Williamsburg and Greenpoint

The crowds quiet down in South Williamsburg, a perfect time to take stock. You’ve now reached double digits in your mileage. Do you need more water? Running gels? Are you going too fast? Too slow?

Take some deep breaths. Soon you’ll be in the party pockets of North Williamsburg and Greenpoint, where there’s a good chance you’ll be offered bananas, doughnuts and shots of alcohol.

Partake at your own risk — you have to run over the Pulaski Bridge into Queens soon.

Dip Through Queens, Then Hit the ‘Woo’ Bridge

It’s natural to turn into Queens and take an exaggerated gulp. Yes, that’s the Queensboro Bridge ahead, and yes, it’s big and long.

That’s why the crowds in Long Island City are so good. Get some extra high-fives here as you zigzag through the borough for a quick two miles. Then a quiet will descend as you charge up the bridge. The only thing you will hear is the pitter-patter of running shoes and the labored breathing of marathoners.

After a while, some runners will start to cheer, knowing that even with 15 miles done, you all need some encouragement. Let out a “woo” that will echo as you push each other along, and share some uplifting words. Listen to your breathing and keep calm.

As you exit the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan, you’ll lean to your left and run straight into a wall of sound. On either side of First Avenue, crowds four to five people deep will be craning their necks looking for their loved ones.

You have 10 miles to go. Use the hills on First Avenue, and keep your eye on the street numbers. The Willis Avenue Bridge to the Bronx is waiting for you past 125th Street.

A Boogie-Filled Jaunt in the Bronx

No borough shows more pride than the Bronx. The local run crews bring the music and spirit you’re going to need when you hit mile 20.

Break through that wall — as a sign will inevitably say — and then get over that last bridge. The energy of the Bronx will drive you back into Manhattan.

Not Quite the Fifth Avenue Homestretch

You’ll turn back into Manhattan on Fifth Avenue and realize that this is the street that will take you to Central Park, home of the finish line. You’ve got less than 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles) to go. This is where the race really starts.

Keep your cool as you run from 138th Street to Central Park North at 110th Street. That’s where a hill will begin. It’s not a mountain, but beginning near mile 23, it might as well be. Put your head down and your knees up, pumping those arms.

Central Park Beckons You

A sharp right on 90th Street will take you into Central Park, and suddenly it will dawn on you.

You have just over two miles left.

You are in the park, the park you have been running toward for the last 24 miles. You are really going to do it. You are really going to finish this thing.

There are some hills in the park — don’t say we didn’t warn you — but take them as they come.

Keep it together. Say that to yourself a few times now.

You’re Actually Almost There

You will be spit out of the park (on a downhill) to run along Central Park South. When you turn right back into the park at Columbus Circle, there will be hundreds of flags waving to welcome you home. For the first time, people screaming “you’re almost there” are telling the truth.

Your whole body should be screaming, too. That means you’ve done this thing right. Let your adrenaline pull you over that final incline.

Cross the finish line in one last stride and finally, finally, stop running. Put your hands above your head and breathe.

Shuffle along toward the medals and smile.

You earned it.

Who May Purchase?

Anyone who will be 18 or older on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024 and is not  a full time resident of the US may purchase one of our guaranteed entry packages.

Why Rates are in US Dollars

As you are traveling to the US for this package and both the hotels and the NYRR charge in US Dollars, we charge the same to avoid having to build in an exchange buffer due to the constantly changing CAD vs USD. This ends up saving you money!

You may pay using a Canadian credit card or a US currency card.

How Much is a Guaranteed Entry

It is a common misconception that a guaranteed entry fee is between US350 and US400, however, this is the estimated rate for those who win the lottery.  The actual fee for a guaranteed entry is substantially higher but under contract with the NYRR, we are not permitted to indicate the exact amount.

Don’t Wait for the Lottery Results!

Only an extremely small percentage of people will win the NYC Marathon Lottery. If you wait to see if you won before purchasing one of our packages, then we will have already sold out.  Instead of waiting, if you purchase one of our Runner’s Packages and then win the lottery in the same year then you may apply your deposit towards a hotel package! This way you are guaranteed to run and you won’t pay twice!

We will provide guaranteed entry only as part of a complete package which, at a minimum, must include 3 nights hotel. We can provide you with airfare options as well if you wish.   We are not permitted to sell entry only.

Looking for a Roommate?

If you are looking to save some money and have Dream Travel try and find you a same-sex roommate, please indicate this at the time of registration.  Although this is not a guaranteed service, we tend to find roommates for most people that book earlier.

After You Apply

After you apply Dream Travel will contact you to complete your registration process via the email address you provided. You must ensure that your email address is correct and you are responsible for monitoring it closely as Dream Travel will contact with everyone via email.

Cancellation Policy

As the NYRR does not refund or defer guaranteed entries, our policy is as follows:

There is no deferral option, however, you may  cancel  your package  for a credit , but  only  if we are able to resell your entry package and  only if it’s prior to registration closing (expected to be the end of August of 2024).

  • If we can resell your package, the following fees will apply:
  • 15% of your  payment amounts if cancelling 120 or more days prior to registration closing
  • 25% of your  payment amounts if cancelling between 7 and 119 days prior to registration closing
  • 50% of your payment amounts if cancelling 6 days or less prior to registration closing.
  • 100% of your deposit and payment amounts if cancelling after registration closes or at any time if we’re unable to resell your package.

Each year we have many people cancel due to unforeseen circumstances who did not purchase our travel insurance meaning they end up losing a portion of their package amount.  Under no circumstances does the NYRR permit postponing your marathon if you need to cancel so protect yourself and your money by purchasing our Group Insurance through ManuLife.

With our insurance you will be able to cancel for insurable reasons as well as  running injuries while training and we also sell a Cancel For Any Reason policy !  We offer various other insurance packages including Cancellation, Interruption, Medical and Baggage. Not Included with your Package

Travel insurance, airfare, meals and items of a personal nature are not included in your package.

Neither the NYRR nor the hotels in Manhattan will accept late payments from Dream Travel under any circumstance.  That said, we must have your final payment in by the deadline, else we have to charge the following late fees: -$50 for those that make their final payment between July 2 and July 12, 2024 -$100 for those that make their final payment between July 12 and July 31, 2024 Those that do not pay by July 31, 2024 may lose their package and deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the minimum three nights we have to stay? You may stay any three nights although the majority of the group will stay Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in order to get to the expo and so that you won’t have to check out prior to running the marathon.

Can I stay at a different hotel? We have contracts with the hotels listed on our website therefore we are unable to offer different properties.

Are these prices in CAD or USD? US Dollars.

Are there transfers from the airport to the hotel? Although transfers are not included, transportation from any of the four airports servicing NYC is as little as $23USD per person per direction for shuttle service

Do you have triple and quadruple rates? We do, please inquire with Dream Travel for exact rates based on your needs.

What’s the weather like? Average November temperatures in NYC float around +12 degrees Celsius. However, it is not uncommon to be freezing in the mornings and as high as +20 during the days. However, due to the lack of sunlight in Manhattan (because of the tall buildings) expect cooler weather.

I’m traveling solo – can you assist me with finding a roommate to save money? Dream Travel will assist you in finding a same-sex roommate but we can’t guarantee that we can find you someone. That said, typically anyone who registers prior to July is matched up and the earlier you register the better the odds.

I see transportation is included to the start line on race day morning. What are my choices? Transportation will be provided from Bryant Park (via bus) and from the Whitehall Ferry Terminal (via ferry) and runners will be given specific and individual departure time choices based on the estimated marathon completion time that they enter during official race registration via the NYRR.

Is there shelter available around the start area? There are open tents that will keep the rain off, however wind will still blow through. 2024 TCS New York City Marathon

You’ll feel more rock star than runner when you run the New York City Marathon. Because the thousands of New Yorkers lining the streets won’t be afraid to tell you what they think: that you’re absolutely crushing it.

The NYC Marathon Is Harder To Get Into Than an Ivy League. Now, You Can Run It Virtually With Peloton

Wednesday, April 24, Peloton and the New York Road Runners launched exclusive scenic content from the 2023 race onto the Tread and Tread+. Users will have the option to do a two and a half hour scenic run that takes you through course highlights, or five different 30-minute runs featuring different segments of the route narrated by different instructors.

The experience isn’t limited to your audio and visual senses, either. The incline of the Tread will automatically adjust based on where you are in the real life course.

“You can work on different paces and use the course for all sorts of different running training while also experiencing a piece of one of the most iconic races in the world,” says Peloton trainer  Selena Samuela . (And yes, running on a treadmill is an effective way to train for a race.)

Samuela narrates the audio run for miles 10 to 16, which takes runners through parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Samuela herself ran the NYC marathon last year and is excited that the Tread experience could help get people “psyched to sign up for their first race and embark on their running journey.”

Incorporating visuals from races into stationary experiences like treadmills and bikes  took off during the pandemic  when people were no longer able to compete in person. And while Samuela acknowledges that running the NYC marathon virtually is “only second best to actually running it [in person,]” the program provides some incredible access to a race only a small amount of people get to actually experience.

Only five percent of the people who apply to run in the NYC marathon through the lottery actually get a spot, which, as the  Wall Street Journal points out, is a lower admission rate than an Ivy League university. Others may have an easier time competing in the race by joining a charity team, but that requires raising significant funds—which is not a bad thing, but can be a significant barrier to entry.

“It’s one step closer to actually running outdoors,” Samuela says. “It’s a true work of genius and art [and] a great way to share the magic of this incredible race.”

One Upstate New York town seems to have it all, at least when it comes to some of America’s best road races, cultural events and a picturesque town square.

Corning , just south of the Finger Lakes , has been racking up awards in USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards series.

Known as the “Crystal City,” it is home to the glimmering Corning Museum of Glass with the most comprehensive collection of glass in the world, and the Gaffer District . This Southern Tier city was voted:

  • One of the best 5ks
  • One of the best half marathons
  • One of the best small town cultural scenes
  • One of the best public town squares

The popular Wineglass Race Series brings runners from around the country to take part in its flat and fast course. It helps that it also passes through perfectly picturesque small towns and a pastoral countryside. The out-and-back Williams Toyota Wineglass 5k ranked number 8 on the publication’s list of best 5ks, outranking Disney World’s annual Princess 5k. The Wegmans Wineglass Half Marathon finished at number 9 on the ranking of best half marathons in America.

Both races are two in a full series over a fall weekend in Corning. The 5k takes place on the Saturday leading up to the longer half marathon and full marathon on a Sunday. There is also a Wineglass 8k that happens on Memorial Day weekend to kick off summer and annual GlassFest.

Runners and their adoring fans will want to stick around the area to take in award-winning Centerway Square , which ranked number 5 this year in best town squares. The brick-paved pedestrian plaza placed second in the 2023 contest.

The Gaffer District along the town’s main corridor is filled with artisan shops, family-owned restaurants like Toast & Grind or Hand + Foot , and one of a kind gift shops.

The city’s award-winning Centerway Walking Bridge doubles as a “suspended park” between the Gaffer District and the Corning Museum of Glass across the Chemung River. The glass museum offers more than 50,000 artifacts and installations.

Corning is also home to The Rockwell Museum , a Smithsonian affiliate, which showcases artwork from Andy Warhol, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and Frederic Remington.

Festivals are also abundant in Corning, with the annual four-day GlassFest which celebrates glassmaking and the fire arts.

When the snow flies, the Gaffer District glitters with their Parade of Lights kicking off the holiday season, with floats and vehicles dressed up in twinkling lights. Followed up by Sparkle, a festival that features horse-drawn carriage rides and visits to Santa in a life-sized snow globe, making Corning a perfect town to visit any time of year.

This redefined a long-distance call.

Earth just received a laser transmission from a world- (and perhaps universe-) record-breaking 140 million miles away — which could have major implications for the future of space travel.

However, this correspondence wasn’t extraterrestrial in origin: It was actually sent by NASA’s Psyche spacecraft, which is currently located approximately 1.5 times the distance between Earth and the sun.

“This represents a significant milestone for the project by showing how optical communications can interface with a spacecraft’s radio frequency comms system,” Meera Srinivasan, the project’s operations lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a statement.

This major breakthrough was achieved by using a Psyche feature called Deep Space Optical Communications, or DSOC, one of the droid’s several tasks per Space.com.

Its main directive is exploring 16 Psyche, the asteroid from which it takes its name.

NASA wanted to show the potential for laser communications to be conducted across interstellar distances, allowing for high bandwidth and a much speedier connection — from 10 to 100 times faster than what’s available today — between humans and the probes they send into space.

This visualization shows the Psyche spacecraft's position on April 8 when the DSOC flight laser transceiver transmitted the message.

This achievement was particularly significant as, along with sending the laser message a record-breaking distance, NASA managed to transmit actual data gathered from the spacecraft.

“We downlinked about 10 minutes of duplicated spacecraft data,” explained Srinivasan. “Until then, we’d been sending test and diagnostic data in our downlinks from Psyche.”

To wit, in November last year, Psyche sent back to Earth from 10 million miles away, but it was pre-loaded test data and not any “real” info.

This marked the culmination of a series of messages sent by the probe since it launched on October 13 atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket.

During a dry run in December, Psyche beamed data back from 19 million miles away, sending it at the system’s maximum rate of 267 megabits per second.

This correspondence — which included footage of an orange tabby cat named Taters — took just over a minute and a half to reach Earth, which is comparable to broadband internet speeds.

By contrast, this latest DSOC transmission was only 25 megabits.

This was due to the fact that Psyche was seven times farther away, reducing the speed at which it could send and receive messages.

Despite the comparatively syrupy speed, this nonetheless eclipsed the project’s goal of “proving at least 1 Mbps was possible at that distance,” per the release.

This watershed moment provides a taste of how spacecraft “could use optical communications in support of humanity’s next giant leap: sending humans to Mars,” NASA wrote.

Psyche is slated to fly by the Red Planet by 2026, whereupon it will fly toward its main destination, 16 Psyche, which it should reach by 2029.

Like the early pioneers’ search for the Northwest Passage, it will aim to map out this final frontier El Dorado, which contains enough precious metals to crash the gold market.
