Along with the province's natural wonders, Leyte features significant cultural landmarks, such as Limasawa Island, which is considered the birthplace of Christianity in Asia, making it a must-visit destination for devout Catholics in the region.

Filled with a diverse array of natural and historical attractions, Leyte is easily one of the best places to visit in the Philippines for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs wanting to understand and experience the country's charms. To help you plan your trip to this sunny province and one of the most underrated destinations in the Philippines , we've compiled the best Leyte tourist spots, which include the best sights in Northern and Southern Leyte.

Philippine Airlines aircraft

One of the most convenient ways to get to Leyte from Manila in Luzon is by taking a flight. Major airlines in the country, such as Philippine Airlines , have nonstop flights to the airport in Tacloban City from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (also known as Manila International Airport ). Thanks to Leyte's proximity to Manila, the flight usually only lasts for about an hour and a half.

Another popular option is to fly from Manila to Cebu in Visayas and then ride a ferry to Ormoc City in Leyte. Some popular ferry operators that regularly have trips from Cebu to Ormoc and vice versa are SuperCat, OceanJet, and Lite Ferries.

Whether you plan on taking a plane or ferry to Leyte, opting for an online trip booking is recommended to avoid long lines and crowds while traveling. You can also check out our Philippines travel guide to read about the Philippines travel requirements you might need for your trip.

In honor of those who died when Supertyphoon Yolanda (international name: Typhoon Haiyan) struck Tacloban City in 2013, a memorial was constructed near the Tacloban City Convention Center. Also known as the Astrodome, this indoor arena played a vital role during the storm's onslaught as it served as an evacuation center for over 8,000 people at the time.

The monument is an abstract metal structure that resembles strips of metal intertwining together into a vertical pillar. Inside this pillar-like structure is a ball that also seems to be made of thick metal strips. Since its construction, the memorial has become an important tourist destination in Leyte that sheds some light on the province's history.

As you take in the view, you can also enjoy the cafe's recipes that are inspired by Filipino cuisine and Asian fusion. Among their bestsellers are their adobo and halang-halang dishes, which are both made with native chickens. For dessert, their signature Puto de Balsa and hot chocolate make for a perfect pair.

Sky Cafe

Sky Cafe is an open-air restaurant perched on a hillside in Baybay City. As a hillside spot, the cafe offers an unobstructed view of the sea of clouds that often form in the area. The best time to visit the cafe is from 5 to 8 AM, so you can catch the sunrise that casts a warm orange glow on the sea of clouds. The cafe also features a small wooden viewing deck where you can stand for the perfect photo with the sea of clouds behind you.

While taking in the serene view, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast. The cafe's signature breakfast is popular Filipino viands like beef tapa and tocino paired with a serving of garlic rice and a fried egg. During your time here, you can also request a pair of disposable gloves so you can eat with your hands, which is a common practice among locals.

13. Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park

Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park

Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park is a national park that consists of natural hot springs , lakes , lush greeneries, and the iconic Mahagnao Volcano. Trekking is one of the best activities to try out here, as the park's trail will take you past various flora and fauna that showcase the area's biodiversity. As you go through the trail, you'll likely spot several species of orchids, lilies, and birds. You will also come across a majestic waterfall that flows into a steady river, which helps keep the area's climate cool.

The park's most famous attractions are the two volcanic lakes, Mahagnao Lake and Malagsum Lake. These crater lakes are bordered by verdant trees, making for a picturesque view. You can even take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of Malagsum Lake after your trek.

Aside from swimming in its warm waters, you can also hop on a boat and sail across the lake for an idyllic moment on the water. If you want to spend a night in this serene getaway, you can set up camp along the lake's bank and fall asleep to the sound of the water lapping the shore.

The camp also has comfortable cabins where you can spend a night or two. Along with this, the camp cares for their own farm and allows visitors to buy their produce on a "pick-and-pay" basis so you can experience harvesting vegetables with your own hands.

Agas-Agas Bridge in Southern Leyte

The bridge began construction in 2006 so vehicles could avoid a mountainous section of Agas-Agas that was prone to landslides during the rainy season. It was eventually finished in 2009.

Two years later, a zipline facility was opened by the bridge to provide a fun experience for tourists. The twin zipline measured up to 880 meters from above the bridge to the riverbank below, making it one of the longest ziplines in the Philippines. However, the operations for the zipline were eventually halted, and the extreme sports facility has yet to reopen.

Alto Peak

Alto Peak towers at about 1,332 meters above sea level, making it one of the tallest points in Eastern Visayas and one of the most notable geographical features of the Philippines . It stands inside the Lake Danao National Park in Ormoc City. The park is also a common jump-off point for those planning to hike up to Alto Peak.

As you make your way through the grassy paths, you will also come across various flora and fauna that thrive within the area, thanks to the cooler climate the abundance of trees provides. You will also pass by another serene body of water called Lake Hanagdan. This is also a great spot to rest and catch your breath before continuing the trek to the summit.

  • Check out our article on the best mountains to hike in the Philippines

After passing by a local campsite area, you will eventually be able to get a clear view of the peak. As the climb generally takes more than a day to complete, it is recommended to spend the night at the campsite before starting your final ascent to the peak. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the surrounding lakes and forests.

MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

Known as one of the most notable historical tourist spots in the Philippines and Leyte, the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park in Palo features bronze sculptures of General Douglas MacArthur and his fellow officers as they landed in Leyte Gulf during World War II. MacArthur arrived to help the United States and the Philippines drive away the Imperial Japanese forces that had occupied the Philippines since 1941.

Before his famous landing in Leyte, the general had initially fought against the Japanese forces months after the occupation began. However, the Japanese army eventually overpowered him and his staff in 1942, forcing them to escape to Australia, where he promised, "I shall return."

Following his return, the Battle of Leyte Gulf commenced, which ended nearly three years after with the surrender of Japanese forces. Aside from the statues sculpted by Anastacio Caedo, visitors can also visit the nearby museum, where you can read MacArthur's speech upon returning to the Philippines.

Aside from being one of the top Southern Leyte tourist spots among devout Catholics, visitors can also get a fantastic view of Leyte, Bohol, and Mindanao from here. Meanwhile, the island's shores boast white sand beaches that are surrounded by clear waters.

There are also a handful of fish sanctuaries here that make it an ideal place for snorkeling and scuba diving, two of the best things to do in the Philippines . For visitors who want to spend more than a day on the island, there are several hotels and homestays here as well.

15 Best Things to Do in Tacloban (the Philippines)

At a glance, you wouldn’t believe that Tacloban was once a ‘ground zero’ for one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the Philippines. Back in 2013, typhoon Yolanda ripped through the city of Tacloban, leveling neighborhoods full of infrastructure and destroying plenty of historical monuments. But in proper Filipino fashion, the community banded together to rebuild their city.

Today, you can visit Tacloban in all its glory. Historical monuments have been restored, restaurants and bars have been rebuilt, and a sense of community has been strengthened. You could say that Tacloban is more tourist-friendly after the rebuild than it was before with a modern makeover and the addition of more entertainment. This is certainly the silver lining.

Tacloban has always been a jumping off point for the islands of Samar and Leyte, but now, it is certainly worth it to schedule in a few days to visit, explore, and learn about the heroic story of this Philippine city.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Tacloban :

1. Kanhuraw Hill

City Hall Tacloban

Home of the City Hall of Tacloban, Kanhuraw Hill has a lot to offer on a lazy day in Tacloban. Facing Kankabato Bay with grassy nooks and shady trees, come have a rest on Kanhuraw Hill where you can watch joggers out on their daily run, couples having a picnic, and the occasional skateboarding shredding the pavement. This is very much the center of the town, used as a gathering spot for locals from every walk of life. Come and observe!

Around Christmas time, the local government erects a bright Christmas tree as tall as you can see with a different theme every year. It’s a selfie-lovers paradise.

2. Madonna of Japan

Madonna of Japan

Right in front of Magsaysay Boulevard and Cancabato Bay, you’ll find the park home to Madonna of Japan. 33 years after World War II, Japan gifted Tacloban this precious monument in order to honor the friendship between the Filipinos and the Japanese. The statue itself is a beautiful piece of art which almost looks like a female version of the Indian Buddha.

Have a seat in the park and ponder the intricate history of Tacloban, or have a quick look at the monument and go right back to people watching! This is said to be the spot where young couple come to kanoodle. Additionally, from Madonna’s seat, you can get some magnificent views from the water.

3. Ocho Seafood Grill

Ocho Seafood Grill

It’s said that if you want the best Filipino seafood dishes in all of Tacloban, Ocho Seafood Grill is where to find them. Located in the center of town on Senator Enage Street, this restaurant serves a revolving door of locals and tourists on a daily basis.

All the dishes are served family style so don’t be shy- order a full spread to share. The seaweed salad is a staple, the sarad adobo is not to be overlooked, and the fish sinigang is to die for.

Not to mention, they got a vast collection of wine artfully displayed on the wall. It’s too tempting not to order a bottle!

4. Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park

Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park

Right across the river from Tacloban is a national park that rivals all others in this beautiful country. With over 841-hectares of protected lands, Sohoton Natural Bridge Natural Park offers both leisurely and extreme activities for you to take part it including rivers kayaking and trekking.

However, the star of Sohoton Natural Bridge Natural Park are the caves! These cathedral-style underground caves are absolutely massive! There are strange rock formations that look like alien pods, creepy spikes sticking down from the ceiling, and of course bats hanging out in dark crevasses.

You guide will take you through the caves while pointing out interesting formations and answering all your burning questions. Go there now!

5. Ride a Habal-Habal

Habal-Habal

You’ve probably ridden in a tuk tuk, a Jeepney, and a tricyle- but have you ever ridden in a habal-habal?

A habal-habal is a form of transport used in the Tacloban region and is basically a motorbike with wide seats and a roof. You’ll squish on the habal-habal in a single-file seating arrangement which comfortably fits 3- although never underestimate the bounds pushed by young Filipino kids.

You’ll often see habal-habals in the countryside as they are best for navigating bumpy roads and steep inclines.

6. Go on a River Cruise

Sohoton Boat Ride

Hire a local boat captain at the Sohoton Natural Bridge Natural Park to show you what these water canals have to offer.

As you go down the river you’ll pass incredible scenery including the limestone cliffs that have developed small caves via water erosion.

On your trip down the river, you’re also likely to pass some local kids playing in the water or some fishermen out doing their daily chores. There will be a dock that leads to the caves where local musicians are playing Waray-waray songs with tunes echoing off the cliff walls.

7. Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum

Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum

The shrine and heritage museum feels like a grand ballroom from centuries ago. With extravagant carpets, lavish chandeliers, and an exterior reminiscent of a southern plantation, it’s clear that there was some serious money circulating here.

No surprisingly, Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum used to be the vacation home of the Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife. This museum, with it’s overstated mahogany tables and intricate ceiling mosaic, was used as a venue for state dinners and gatherings by the country’s most elite.

This museum is an insane look into the life of the “haves” and “have-nots” in the Philippines with a president living such an excessive life while his people struggled for food.

8. Burgos Street

Junction of Real and P Burgos

Typhoon may have gotten the best of Burgos Street back in 2013, but today, Burgos Street is in full swing! All along the stretch, you can find restaurants offering both western and Filipino food, bars with cold beers, and places to party until late.

On the flip side, Burgos Street provides a calmer atmosphere for those who seek it during the day. There are family-owned guesthouses, teahouses, and coffee shops that are great for killing a few hours (especially after a wicked hangover).

9. Rizal Avenue BBQ Stalls

Barbecue

Take yourself on a food tour up and down Rizal Ave. There, each vendor specializes in just a handful of dishes where they are the true masters of their food domain.

You’ll find lots of grills with sticks of meat. Some chicken, some pork, and some the ever-so-popular Tacloban Longaniza which is the Filipino version of a Spanish sausage!

One of the most popular BBQ stands on this food strip is Baldevia Siblings’s Barbecue. There’s often a small line of people here who just can’t shake the craving for the secretly marinade chicken.

Food is cheap, hot, and ready to eat!

10. Pintados and Sangyaw Festivals

Pintados Festival

The Pintados festival celebrates the brave Waray warriors with locals dressing up in indigenous costumes and colorful face paint and dancing traditional dances for the whole city to see. There are even staged warrior fights by men covered in ceremonious tattoos.

In Waray, “sangyaw” means to “herald the news”. This festival, held day before the city festival, helps ring in the festivities and get everyone raring to go.

Both of these festivals put you in touch with Tacloban, its people, its culture and its history in a way that others don’t often get to experience.

These festivities kick of June 26th!

11. M/V Eva Jocelyn Shrine

MV Eva Jocelyn Shrine

In 2013, typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda) devastated the region of Tacloban. Recorded as the deadliest typhoon to ever hit the Philippines, Haiyan killed an estimated 6,300 people. There is a famous photo which shows a demolished neighborhood with the only recognizable object being this red, white, and blue ship.

Today, the M/M Eva Jocelyn Shrine stands as a symbol of resiliency and pays tribute to all of those who lost their lives. The same red, white, and blue ship is a symbol of remembrance and memorial.

12. Zpa Spa

Zpa Spa

After a few days of site seeing, trekking, and buses, your body is probably one big pretzel. Untwist your muscles at Zpa spa. This spa is a popular destination in the city with an amazing reputation for providing top notch services.

There is a sauna, a steam room, massage chairs, and of course, massage therapists who work wonders! The setting is very professional and relaxing with private rooms, aroma therapy candles, cozy massage tables, and calming music.

Call or message ahead of time. You can find Zpa on the 2nd Floor of XYZ Hotel.

13. Try Chocolate Moron and Binagol

Chocolate Moron

A staple treat in Tacloban is chocolate moron and binagol. These beloved rice-made sweets are homemade and sold up and down the streets of the city.

Moron is rice that has been cook and simmered in coconut milk, then mixed with a touch of cocoa powder. Binagol is made from the root crop called Talyan (kind of like taro), which is crushed and mixed with coconut milk, condensed milk and sugar and then cooked like a cake, steamed in a coconut shell and wrapped in a banana leaf.

You can almost taste the love!

14. MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

A stunning portrayal of the moment General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf, the leaders of the American forces, landed on the coast to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation. The memorial can be found near the center of Leyte Island, shared with Tacloban.

The memorial itself is both breathtaking and emotional- even if you aren’t a huge history buff. There is are informational markers in both English and Filipino to give you the full story and all the details, including a copy of General Douglas MacArthur’s speech that was given upon landing.

15. Tulaan Falls

Tulaan Falls

You didn’t think this list was going to finish without a waterfall shout out, did you?

Of course there is a magnificent waterfall in Tacloban to be explored! Take a day trip down to Babatngnon where Tulaan Falls awaits! You’ll make your way through a laidback forest path surrounded by hundred-year-old trees, toppled logs, and wild ferns. You’ll then come across a lazy stream where you can splash about- this is how you know you’re close to the falls!

Follow the path and the sound, and you’ll come to Tulaan Falls. This rocky fall creates a shiny black sheen on the rock it covers, then spills into a natural pool below. Kick your shoes off and jump in! If you are a decent climber, you can try climbing up the rocks to a ledge situated about two meets from the water. It’s a nice place to rest and then do a little cliff diving.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Tacloban City

Table of Contents

T acloban City Travel Guide — Tacloban is a first-class city in Eastern Visayas and is the provincial capital of Leyte. It is one of the most populous cities in Eastern Visayas, with 138 barangays and over 250,000 residents. It is located right at the edge of Leyte, facing the San Juanico Strait and the distant mainland Samar.

Although it was devastated by typhoon Yolanda (or Haiyan) in 2013, and is, undeniably, most known for the tragedy that hit it, the city and its residents show how resilient Filipinos can be. It is not just a tourist destination that boasts the San Juanico Strait, the MacArthur Landing Memorial, or the Madonna of Japan Park—it is a mark of the Filipino people that should not be missed.

The park is located in Kanhuraw Hill.

Tacloban City

Top 7 Tourist Spots in Tacloban City You Don’t Want to Miss

I was checking my Facebook account when my Gmail reminded me that I have an upcoming flight to Tacloban. It made me so excited as I already forgot that booking! It was just a couple of days before my flight and I had no plans (as usual, hahaha!) I am visiting Tacloban so I can see the best tourist spots that you can also enjoy.

Everyone knows that Tacloban City was badly hit by typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) almost seven years ago but I’ve seen some news that the city is moving forward. When I get to Tacloban airport, I immediately look for a jeepney that is bound to downtown Tacloban (it was really easy to find one), and when I get there, I can say that the city is moving on from that tragedy. So here we go!

Top 7 Tourist Spots in Tacloban City

Sto. Niño Church

Tourist spot in tacloban city

I first visited the Sto. Nino church. It took me a couple of hours of walking to reach this place. I didn’t know where it was. People are just kind enough to give directions 😉

I checked-in in a lodging house (this is cheaper, wink) near the church. This place is actually near everything, like restaurants, hotels, city hall, supermarkets, etc.

The church served as my guide while walking around Tacloban. You will not see the tower everywhere but whenever I see it, I know that I am near the lodging house.

Heads up for this Shrine.  I got here by riding a tricycle from Leyte Provincial Capitol. Fare: P50 Travel time: ~11 minutes at MacArthur Landing Memorial Park (Palo, Leyte)

That summarizes the top 7 tourist spots in Tacloban City. Here’s another landmark that you may want to visit too – MacArthur Landing Memorial Park.

How to Get to MacArthur Landing Memorial Park

From Downtown Tacloban, you can ride a jeepney bound to Palo. I rode a jeepney with a sign “Robinson’s / St. Paul”. Simply ask the driver that you’ll go to MacArthur Landing Memorial Park. Fare: P10; Travel time: ~30minutes.

You will be dropped off at National Science High School, there are motorcycle drivers there, waiting for tourists and travelers. Fare: P10 Travel time, few minutes. That’s how you can get to MacArthur Landing Memorial Park.

Getting Around Tacloban City

It’s not difficult to roam around the city as there are a lot of good people who you can ask. You can also ride a tricycle and ask them to drop you off to where you want to go.

In my case, I just walked around and if I feel lost, that’s the time I ask for directions. Most of these places are adjacent to each other.

Have you been to Tacloban? I know I’ve missed several tourist spots but I will go back here! 🙂

Where to Eat

There are several restaurants in Tacloban City. If you’re on a budget, you may want to try Pindoko’s BBQ in the Real street!

If you have P100 – P150 (solo) you can have several BBQ’s! 🙂

Let me know if you have any question and I’ll be happy to help!

PS. Since I’m in Tacloban, I decided to visit Northern Samar.  Yeah, I know it’s 6 hours away from Tacloban but I wanted to see the Rock Formations there.  Here’s my post about it.

Macarthur Memorial Park is a must-visit historical place when one is in Tacloban City.

This park marks the spot where MacArthur and Philippine President Omesna came ashore when the invasion to retake the Philippines from the Japanese began on October 20, 1944.

A site where Gen. Douglas McArthur landed on October 20, 1944, to liberate the Philippines from Japanese forces.

The statues are placed at the center of the park. They were medium-sized ones. You really can’t take photos near it because it is surrounded by water and is prohibited.
