There are three dams built under the Parambikulam Aliyar project. The reservoir is famous for a variety of aquatic fauna including Mugger Crocodiles. Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, lying at a distance of 89 km from Palakkad district the immediate south of the Palakkad Gap shows mountainous terrain with altitude ranging from 300 meter to 1438 meter above the sea level.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary has seven major valleys and three major river systems. Major peaks in the sanctuary are Karimala, Pandaravadai, Vengoli and Puliyarapadam.

The sanctuary lies in between the Anamalai hills and Nelliyampathy hills offers the sight of animals. This place is also blessed with scenic beauty of nature. Start your trip early morning during this time the animals are most active. Late evening also you can watch animals out.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is the most protected ecological centre of Western Ghats. The sanctuary is surrounded on all sides by protected areas and sanctuaries of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The sanctuary is thickly forested with stands of Bamboo, sandalwood, rosewood and Teak.

Parambikulam once had some of the finest stands of Teak of South India. Parambikulam has one of the largest population of bison (gaur). This sanctuary is home for different wild animals like elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, sambhars, Chital tigers, panthers and crocodiles.

It is also home ground for different races of indigenous people who are as well an integral part of the prevailing harmonious ecosystem. Apart from these some interesting varieties of species found here are cobras, bonnet macaques, Kraits, vipers, turtles, darters and black eagles.

2. Kannimara Teak

The giant Kannimara Teak is a popular attraction in the sanctuary. This is one of the oldest and largest teak trees in the world. This tree is a remnant of original teak forests in the area before Teak plantations came up. Kannimara Teak is said to be 360 years old.

On the way to this tree you can view several animals as this area is preferred for wildlife viewing. On the way there is a field where herbivorous such as deer, sambhar and gaur are found in large numbers.

3. Three Dams in Parambikulam

Within the sanctuary there are three dams Parambikulam, Thoonakkadavu and Peruvaripallamon the parambiar river. These are ideal for boating. You can hire row boats at Thoonakkadavu and Parambikulam. If you are lucky you can see mugger crocodiles in the waters or on the banks.

Apart from these there are so many interesting places to visit in here. Visit the dam view point, valley view point and lake view point for enjoying the mesmerising beauty of surrounding dams, valley and lake.

Nature Interpretation Centre, Salim Ali Bird Interpretation Centre, Salim Ali Gallery and Tramway are some other interesting attractions which worth a visit. This is a best place for adventure tourism . One can enjoy trekking in the valleys. Night Halt and Jungle camps will be a unique experience.

Places to Eat in Parambikulam

By 6 in the evening all the activities end in the sanctuary. This is the time to relax and enjoy the breathtaking beauty and calm atmosphere of the surroundings. There are some staying options inside the sanctuary from where you can view the lake and dams.

Forest Department Inspection Bungalow is such a place. You can stay in the tree top huts in here. There are two tree top huts. Other staying options include Bison Valley Lodge, Old wireless station, Machans with overnight camping, Community Hall, PWD Inspection Bungalow and Hotel Everest.

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve

Encompassing 644 sq km of glorious Western Ghats terrain and wildlife, nestled behind three dams in a valley at altitudes of 300m to 1440m, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is possibly the most protected space in South India ā€“ and one of its least-touristed reserves. It's encircled by Kerala and Tamil Nadu sanctuaries, and home to elephants, leopards, sloths and about 26 tigers, as well as more easily spotted sambar, crocodiles, chital and some of Asia's largest and most ancient teak trees.

During monsoon season (June to August) the reserve is best avoided, and it may close due to fire risk in March and April.

Activities and accommodation within Parambikulam's buffer zones are booked online up to six months ahead or, if that fails, through the reserve office . Choose from tented niches (Indian ā‚¹6100 to ā‚¹7300, foreigner ā‚¹9700 to ā‚¹12,100), treetop huts (Indian ā‚¹3000 to ā‚¹6100, foreigner ā‚¹3600 to ā‚¹9700) and an air-conditioned colonial-era bungalow (Indian ā‚¹5000 to ā‚¹6100, foreigner ā‚¹7300 to ā‚¹8500); rates per room include three meals a day plus trekking, bamboo rafting and minibus wildlife-spotting safaris. Treks (Indian ā‚¹1200 to ā‚¹3600, foreigner ā‚¹2400 to ā‚¹6100), minibus safaris (ā‚¹200) and combined-activities packages (ā‚¹9700 for 10 people with meals) can be booked for day visits, too.

A kind of a heaven for travel photographers and wildlife enthusiasts, the area is home to such treasure of species as Nilgiri Tahr, Nilgiri Langur, Lion tailed macaque, spotted deer, Asian elephant, Indian wild dog and several different kinds of snakes and birds and spiders. Moreover, the park houses many distinct kinds of trees, primarily, neem, rosewood and sandalwood which form an incredible backdrop. Boat cruises are available from Parambikulam Reservoir. Trekking is one of the best ways to explore the wildlife sanctuaries but can only possible after permission as Eco-tourism packages. A tree house is also present in the Reserve Forest Area in Thoonakadavu while other lodgings offered by State Forest Department under Eco-tourism at Thoonakadavu, Thellikal and Elathode have comfortable accommodation for those wanting to experience wildlife from close quarters.

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve , which includes the erstwhile Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, is in the Western Ghat mountain ranges. This tiger reserve is on the border of the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala , in the southern part of India.

Understand [ edit ]

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is 89 km from Palakkad and 44 km from Pollachi, adjacent to Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. Although Parambikulam belongs to the state of Kerala, it is accessible only via Pollachi in Tamil Nadu. The Western Ghats mountain range along with Anamalai Hills and Prambikulam is under consideration for selection as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History [ edit ]

The park was established in 1973. It was declared a tiger reserve with an area of 643.66 kmĀ² in 2009. This consists of a 390.89 kmĀ² core area and a 252.77 kmĀ² buffer area.

Landscape [ edit ]

The park is thickly forested with bamboo and other such tropical wet and evergreen trees. The terrain is hilly, owing to it being a part of the western ghats. The reserve supports diverse habitat types, including evergreen forests, semi evergreen, moist deciduous, dry deciduous and shola forests. Other unique habitats like montane grasslands and marshy grasslands locally known as ā€˜vayalsā€™ are also found here. Considerable extent of man-made Teak plantations and presence of three dams of deep freshwater ecosystem created under Parambikulam Aliyar Project added to the diversity of Parambikulam.

Flora and fauna [ edit ]

Parambikulam has a rich treasure of 1438 species of flowering plants falling under 704 genera and 136 families. It includes 81 species of Orchids both terrestrial and epiphytic. The natural forests of the Reserve are a rich treasure of medicinal plants. About 50 endangered medicinal plants are found in the Karianshola (MPCA) alone, in addition to the common species. About 17 of them are already listed in the Red Data Book of IUCN which emphasizes the importance of their conservation. There are about 285 rare endemic and endangered species of flora found in the Sanctuary. Haplothismia exannulata, a monotypic genus of Burmanniaceae rediscovered here after 1951. Coscinium fenestratum, Utleria salicifolia, the IUCN 'redlisted' medicinal plants endemic to Anamalais are also found here, apart from Syzygium palghatense, Pteroceras monsooniae and Medinilla anamalaina, which are endemic to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.

The sanctuary includes 36 species of mammals, 16 species of amphibians, 268 species of birds, 61 species of reptiles, 47 species of fish, 124 species of butterflies and more than a thousand species of insects. The animals consist of lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahr, elephant, tiger, pantThe common species found here are Asian Elephant, Gaur, Royal Bengal Tiger, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Barking Deer, Common Langur, Nilgiri Langur, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Sloth Bear, Panther Wild Dog etc. The common birds found are Drongos, Bee-eaters, Treepies, Mynas, Woodpeckers, Kingfishers and Birds of prey. Reptiles like Pythons, King Cobras, Pit Vipers, Lizards and Tortoises are also found. The rare species include Tiger, Lion-tailed Macaque, Mouse Deer, Nilgiri Tahr, Nilgiri Marten, Great Pied Hornbill, Peninsular Bay Owl, King Cobra, Cane Turtle, etc. Besides Tomopterna parambikulamana, an endemic frog of Parambikulam and Garra surendranathanii, an endemic sucker fish of Parambikulam are worth mentioning.

Climate [ edit ]

The area falls under intense monsoon showers, both south-west and north-east monsoon. The average annual rainfall is 1600 mm. The reserve experiences wet tropical climate with temperature varies from 15Ā°C to 32Ā°C. The reserve has altitude ranging from 300 to 1438 m above sea level.

Get in [ edit ]

Pollachi, Palakkad and Coimbatore are the nearest towns. From Palakkad and Coimbatore, you must go via Pollachi and Topslip to enter Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.

By plane [ edit ]

Coimbatore airport is the nearest international airport to Parambikulam - approximately 100 km (via Pollachi and Topslip). International flights to Singapore, Sharjah are available by Scoot, Air Arabia and Srilankan Airlines. Domestic airlines fly to Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and other Indian cities.

By bus [ edit ]

There are only three bus trips to/ from Parambikulam on a daily basis. Two TNSTC buses start from Pollachi, and one KSRTC bus start from Palakkad. TNSTC bus starts from Pollachi at approximately 6:15AM and 3:15PM. KSRTC bus start from Palakkad at approximately 8AM. KSRTC bus touches Kozhinjampara and Pollachi enroute. The KSRTC bus starts the return journey from Parambikulam at approximately 12:30PM, while the TNSTC buses start their return journey at approximately 8:45AM and 5:45PM. These timings are tentative, and it is best to confirm these timings from the bus stations before one finalises the journey. Those who are travelling by bus and plan to go for a vehicle safari inside the tiger reserve should alight at Anappady and visit the Information Centre at Anappady to purchase tickets.

By train [ edit ]

Coimbatore Junction (85 km) and Palakkad Junction (100 km) are the nearest railway stations.

Get around [ edit ]

For the day visitor, there are park-managed vehicles that takes a visitor on a park safari. Private vehicles are allowed inside the reserve only if they have a prior booking for an overnight stay. Toilet facilities are available at three locations - near Parambikulam check-post, near the Information Centre at Anappady, and at Parambikulam town.

By car [ edit ]

As there are only 2 buses per day, hiring taxis will be the viable option, if you want to cover both Topslip and Parambikulam on the same day. Though there are lot of tourist taxis from Pollachi, it may not be easy to get one during peak seasons or when film shootings happen around the town. It is therefore advisable to book your cab in advance and ask your tour guide or cab driver to pick you from Coimbatore Railway station, Airport, Bus terminus or Pollachi Bus Terminus.

Fees and permits [ edit ]

The visiting time is from 7AM to 6PM. Entry fee for light vehicles is ā‚¹50 and for heavy vehicles is ā‚¹170. A 3-hour van safari will cost ā‚¹150 per head. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the park unless you have booked your accommodation in Parambikulam in-advance. Van Safari is possible only when there are 20 people. If not you must buy the tickets for 20 people (ā‚¹3000) and share it.

Community based ecotourism programmes provides a major share of employment to the tribals living in the Tiger Reserve. There are multiple eco-tourism packages. These activities are operated within the Buffer Zone of the tiger reserve with the help of local tribal guides.

  • Trekking (from ā‚¹600 to ā‚¹6000 for a group of 5 for various trails)
  • Bamboo rafting
  • Purchase of souvenirs (wood crafted materials, key-chains made from recycled plastic, t-shirts, caps, jackets, organic pepper, paper bags etc.)
  • Tree saplings can be purchased from a nursery located at Parambikulam town.

The packages inside the tiger reserve are managed by the forest department with significant participation from the local community. The forest department has not authorized any private tour operators or travel agents to take bookings or conduct tours on behalf of the forest department.

Eat [ edit ]

Vengoli CafƩ, located inside the reserve, provides eating options. While the name sounds exotic, the menu here is limited. The cafƩ provides idli and dosa for breakfast, meals for lunch, and chappathi for dinner. Some Kerala favourite snacks such as pazhampori are available in addition to the usual packaged snacks such as biscuits. This restaurant is near the information centre at Anappadi.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Do not tease wild animals and stay away from them. Beware of lone elephants and never attempt to tease them or take pictures as they may turn violent in no time.

Do not try to do any activity after 6PM here.

Usage of alcohol and tobacco products is not allowed inside the tiger reserve.

Campfires are not allowed inside the reserve.

Bringing a binocular would be helpful to have a closer look at the fauna of the sanctuary.

Umbrella, rain jacket and rain pants will be of help if there are rains.

Wear shoes (especially hiking shoes) if you are planning for a trek.

It is advisable to wear light-colored clothing that have colors that align with the forest environment - light brown, light green, etc. Avoid contrasting colors (such as red, white) when you are visiting a forest.

Coimbatore Railway Station; at a distance of 96km, serves as the nearest railway station to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. Visitors from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Rajkot, Bikaner, Mangalore, and several others can reach Coimbatore, and avail regional buses or private vehicles to reach Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.

Coimbatore Airport is the nearest airport to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve; distance is around 110km. The airport is well-connected with regular flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kozhikode, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, and other important cities. Upon arrival at Coimbatore Airport, visitors should take regular buses or hire private vehicles to reach Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.

Post monsoon is the best time to visit Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. Tourism in this wildlife reserve begins from August and continues till January. Safari Timings in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve:

If you are planning for a visit to the stunning Parambikulam Tiger Reserve during your Kerala trip, you must make it before 04:00PM to the main gate of the reserve. Though the park opens at 07:00AM and closes down at 06:00PM, entry closes at sharp 04:00PM!

Also, visitors should pay a fee of INR 150 for heavy vehicles and INR 50 for light vehicles to the reserve. Entry fee for Indian are INR 10 (INR 5 for infants) and INR 100 for international travellers. Also, if you are carrying a video camera, you have to pay a fee of INR 150, and INR 25 for still cameras.

The Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, which also includes the former Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, is a 391-square-kilometer protected area in Kerala’s Palakkad district. It is located in Kollengode Block, Chittur Taluk. In 1973, the wildlife sanctuary, which covered 285 square kilometers, was created. It is located between the Anaimalai and Nelliyampathy Hills in the Sungam range of hills. Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is one of the most attractive places in the entire Western Ghats, considering its biological richness, an abundance of wildlife, and landscape beauty.

The Pugmark Trail is about ten kilometers, which starts from Peruvaripallam Earth Dam. In the way of the trek, you will reach the Kannimara teak, which is known as the worldā€™s largest teak, and it is 460 years old. The trail gets through teak plantations and reaches Thunacadavu and then to Anappady.

Elephant Song Trail

The elephant trail is an easy trekking path that is suitable for all persons. It is trial which is intended for all age group persons. It is a four kilometers trek that stretches through the Western Ghatsā€™s evergreen patches.

Kariyanshola Trail

It is a trek that stretches from Anapaddy to the deciduous forest of Parambikulam Tiger reserve Forests in Palakkad. It is a 4-kilometer long trek through which you enter into the deep forest. Wildlife into the forest is mesmerizing beauty to watch for a nature lover. This trek includes highly sought-after experiences like bamboo rafting and trekking. A maximum of ten persons are allowed in a group to trek at one time. You have to take extra precautions while trekking due to leech bites.

Peruvari Island Nest

Peruvari Island Nest Camp is one of its kind experiences in the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. It is a stay-over program inside the Perivaripallam Dam, which provides a great opportunity for tourists to camp on the top of a bamboo hut. This place can be accessed while rafting along the waters of the dam in thirty minutes.

One guide will be there to give you the company along with the four boatmen. This package excludes food as you will be preparing your food with the help of boatmen and a guide. Treetop huts for romantic couples who are on their honeymoon. These are located near the Thunakadavu reservoir inside the forest. The view from Treetop huts gives a mesmerizing and pleasant view of serene waters. Three meals are included in the package. Veettikunnu Island Hut

It takes one and a half hours of rowing to reach the destination along the reservoir. Five people can be accommodated in the camp. There will be four expert boatmen and guide to help you. A guide will be with you throughout the journey.

Honeycomb Complex

Honeycomb Complex is specialized for night-stay packages. It is located inside the reserve. Bamboo rafting is included in the package.
