Scottie Scheffler becomes first golfer to win back-to-back Players Championships

players championship tour

For the first time in its 50 years of competition, The Players Championship crowned a repeat champion, and his name is Scottie Scheffler.

Fighting through neck pain and challenging the PGA Tour's best amid the pitfalls of the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, Scheffler triumphed in a gripping four-way battle ahead of Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman in Sunday's final round.

Clark nearly forced a playoff with his birdie putt on 18, but his putt lipped out.

Scheffler erased a five-stroke deficit with a final-round 64 and topped the field at 20 under for the tournament, becoming the first-ever back-to-back winner of the Gold Man Trophy on the golden anniversary of The Players. Clark, Harman and Schauffele each came in at 19 under.

The 27-year-old Dallas resident becomes the seventh man to win the Players multiple times, joining Jack Nicklaus, Hal Sutton, Davis Love III, Fred Couples, Steve Elkington and Tiger Woods.

Scheffler, who received treatment Friday and Saturday for neck pain that hampered his backswing and his ability to shape shots, began with an eagle on No. 4. From there, he added birdies on Nos. 5, 8, 9, 11, 12 and finally No. 16 to move into sole possession of the lead, closing with a par on the treacherous 18th.

The winning score was the lowest at The Players since Greg Norman won at 24 under in the 1994 Players. Scheffler's final-round 64 tied for the lowest for a Players champion, joining Couples in 1996 and Love in 2003.

Harman, needing a birdie at 18 to force a playoff, escaped pine straw to find the green in two but couldn't sink the birdie attempt from 17 feet, 4 inches.

Morning leader Schauffele had a chance to tie Scheffler at the Island Green but pulled a birdie putt left from 6 feet, 8 inches. He then missed right with his tee shot on 18 into the pine straw, leading to an approach that left him over 60 feet from the hole. His birdie putt rolled just wide right of the cup.

Clark, who had made birdies at 16 and 17 to close the gap, hit his approach on 18 to almost the same spot as Harman, 17 feet and 4 inches from the cup. His putt rolled around the rim and bounced out just when it appeared set to drop.

THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass

Book a stay & play golf vacation to TPC Sawgrass, Home of THE PLAYERS Championship

Since its start in 1974, with Jack Nicklaus’ historic victory over J.C. Snead at Atlanta Country Club, THE PLAYERS Championship has been one of the PGA TOUR ‘s most coveted titles. Held annually in March, THE PLAYERS is one of the most anticipated tournaments on the PGA TOUR calendar, boasting not only the strongest field but also the biggest purse on the PGA TOUR. THE PLAYERS Championship 2021 will be held March 11 – 14, 2021.

THE PLAYERS Stadium Course  at TPC Sawgrass is a golf course built with both the pros and the fans in mind. The course, owned by the PGA TOUR, first hosted THE PLAYERS in 1982 and is now the permanent home of the annual event. A true “Stadium Course,” the championship-caliber golf course was designed to improve the overall on-site fan experience at THE PLAYERS, while also making it accessible to and playable by golf fans of all abilities.

Working with renowned golf course architect Pete Dye, then-PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman created a course design that favored no particular player or style of play. The result has been a golf course that has tested the best on the PGA TOUR and set the stage for some of the TOUR’s most dramatic finishes. From Jerry Pate’s tossing Pete Dye into the lake on the 18 th hole, to Tiger Woods’ “Better Than Most” putt heard around the world in 2001, THE PLAYERS Championship never disappoints.

Who is The Players Championship trophy a statue of?

players championship tour

The current The Players Championship trophy debuted in 2019, when the tournament made the move back to March after a dozen years in May.

The PGA Tour went away from the Waterford crystal trophy to a new trophy made by Tiffany and Co., who also makes the FedEx Cup trophy. With the new trophy, they wanted to lean into the PGA Tour logo and a new branding that deemed The Players Championship as the PGA Tour's "gold standard." So, now the trophy has a golfer on top of it, which tands on top of the 17th green from TPC Sawgrass' Players Stadium Course.

However, there's always a question about which golfer is the basis for the trophy.

As it turns out, the golfer atop The Players Championship trophy is not just one golfer but a litany of them. The golfer represents spects of each of the 42 different prior winners of The Players -- and it was 38 when the trophy debuted. The 3-D printed mold of that player is then used in a process called electroforming, which uses electrical current to build up layers of precious metal to create a seamless finish.

Hypothetically, the trophy will continue to evolve each year, as new and different players win the biggest tournament on the PGA Tour schedule.

The gold-plated trophy is made from sterling silver and has a 24-carat vermeil, with the details of the 17th hole shining, including Pete Dye railroad ties and piling.

In addition to the tremendous trophy, The Players Championship winner earns a staggering amount of money. The Players Championship purse is now $25 million, with the winner earning $4.5 million. That purse and first-place prize money are more than double those figures when this new trophy debuted in 2019, representing an enormous sea change in the amount of money in professional golf.

While The Players Championship may not be considered quite on the level of a major championship, it has all the trappings of one, including the trophy.

LIV Golf's Talor Gooch Will Not Try to Qualify for the U.S. Open

A number of players from the Saudi-backed league will attempt to play their way into the U.S. Open but not LIV's top player from 2023.

  • Author: Bob Harig

Several LIV Golf League players will attempt to make the U.S. Open field via final qualifying next month.

Talor Gooch won’t be one of them.

The top player on LIV Golf in 2023 who won three times and captured the season-long points race said during a news conference in Singapore on Thursday that he would not be taking part.

He did not give a reason.

Gooch appeared alongside Smash GC teammates Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell and Jason Kokrak, and they were all asked if they would attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, which will conduct 36-hole qualifiers around the country on May 3.

Both McDowell and Kokrak said they would not only attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, but for the British Open as well—which will have final qualifying two weeks prior to the championship.

🏆🇺🇸 World #624 Talor Gooch on if he plans to play in a U.S. Open qualifying event: “I’m not.” Should the USGA give LIV Golf’s Talor Gooch a special exemption? pic.twitter.com/enhnD2SIwh — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) May 2, 2024

A total of 35 players from LIV are scheduled to play in final qualifying. Koepka, a two-time major winner and the reigning PGA champion , is exempt.

Gooch simply said: “I’m not.”  And offered no explanation.

The one-time PGA Tour winner has been outspoken about not being included in the major championships.

Last year, he earned his way into the Masters and the British Open having finished in the top 30 in the 2022 PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings. But Gooch was miffed that the U.S. Open changed its rules to state that the same exemption would only go to a player “eligible” for the season-ending Tour Championship. Having gone to LIV Golf, Gooch was not eligible.

Earlier this year, Gooch made headlines when he said: “If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his (career) Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there is just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality.”

LIV Golf does not receive Official World Golf Ranking points for its events and many of its players have plummeted in the rankings while not earning points. Gooch, who was top 50 in the world around this time last year, has sunk to 624th in the OWGR. He is ranked 41st by Data Golf, which includes LIV tournaments.

He tied for 34th at the Masters last year and then missed the cut at the PGA Championship. He did not attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open and then missed the cut at The Open.

Gooch has no victories so far this year with LIV Golf but does have three top 10s. He is the defending champion of this week’s event in Singapore.

Among the LIV golfers scheduled to compete in final qualifying for the U.S. Open are Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed and Henrik Stenson.
