My Tips for Using the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner

Royal Caribbean cruise planner feature FindingJillian.com

Sharing is caring!

Do you use the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner ? I’m the queen of worrying so when embarkation day finally arrives I want to grab a cocktail and find a great spot for sail-away. I want to start my vacation!  I don’t want to stand in line and read about the various drink packages and dining packages.

Please note that this post has been updated. You can find the new information here .

Welcome to the first post in the Countdown to Cruise series. I’ll share with you my tips to effectively using the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner.

I use the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner to pre-book and pre-pay for everything I can because I HATE coming back to a large credit card bill.  And, I hate to stress about it when I could be relaxing.  Oh, I also want to save a little money!

Anyone who has been on a cruise knows that as soon as you board there are information tables where you can purchase a drink package, a dining package….a spa package and more!  Well, did you know that you can take care of all of that before you board?  Enter the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner.

Here are my tips for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner

Book entertainment and dining as soon as possible.  Entertainment is typically included in your cruise fare but on the largest ships, you are required to make reservations. If you selected my-time dining you will want to select your preferred time as the most popular times book up fast.

Pre-Cruise Sales in the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner!

Roughly 4-5 weeks before your cruise, you will get an email from Royal Caribbean urging you to check out the sale prices in your cruise planner. But, you can access the cruise planner well before this time and check for sales.

I personally like to space out my purchases.  For example, we are sailing in March.  That means that our final cruise payment was due in early December.  I get that paid off (and recovered from Christmas) then start looking for deals in January. Our largest expense is usually our drink package.

Now, being honest, I don’t necessarily save money buying the drink package.  But, we usually have a decent amount of onboard credit and, with the sale price, it’s a wash.  And, again, I can pre-pay it, saving me from the sticker shock at the end of the cruise.  I’ll write a full post covering the drink package soon.  So be sure and subscribe if you haven’t already.

update for 2019:   Should you purchase the Royal Caribbean Deluxe Beverage package ?

Do You Have Onboard Credit?

If you receive onboard credit from Royal Caribbean as part of your cruise purchase, it will be in your Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner almost immediately.  However, we also utilize the Royal Caribbean Visa and redeem points before each cruise for the onboard credit. This credit now appears in the cruise planner (YAY!) but only about 14-30 days out from your sail date. As you can see in the image below, your onboard credit shows at the top of the page near the cart. If you have credit, it will ask you if you would like to utilize it towards any item you add to your cart.

image of Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner onboard credit

Because I’m so eager to plan, by the time this credit hits our planner, I have already booked our entertainment (no additional fee) and purchased our drink packages.  I use this Visa credit to book a specialty dining package and our internet package.  My husband needs to be accessible because he’s a business owner, and I need to keep all of you updated!

You can also pre-book excursions, purchase photo packages, trips to the spa, etc.  You can plan almost anything in Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner…except reserve pool deck chairs.  Darn it!

image of Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner Cart FindingJillian.com

Heads Up – You will need to “check-out” and pay for these purchases.  Making purchases in the Cruise Planner does not go onto your onboard account for you to pay at the end of your cruise. You will get an email confirmation of your purchase.  You can print that email and take it with you or print out your purchase history and take it with you…just in case.

Have a Question about the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner?

If something is unclear you can always call or email Royal Caribbean to get clarification.  I’m not a phone fan but over the years I’ve submitted several emails looking for clarification. In fact, I just emailed them this week looking for clarification on a particular internet package.

Here is an example question that is a bit of a hot topic.  Recently, Royal Caribbean changed its policy on the alcohol package. They now specify that if one adult in a stateroom purchase the alcohol drink packages all adults over 21 in the same stateroom must also purchase the package.  (Don’t be mad at Royal Caribbean, the other cruise lines already had this rule).

So, if your spouse drinks but you don’t, contact Royal Caribbean and ask them if there are exceptions to this new rule. By the way, yes, there are many.   Don’t be afraid to ask a question.

You can also ask me!  Connect with me on Facebook or Instagram .

Do You Have a Special Need or Request?

Staying on the topic of contacting Royal Caribbean.  I want to quickly share a tip I learned from listening to Matt on the RoyalCaribbeanblog podcast.  Thanks, Matt!

If you have a special need during your cruise.  If you have a health issue or severe allergy, send a note to Royal Caribbean.  For example, if you utilize a breathing machine and let Royal Caribbean know, they will provide you with an extension cord and distilled water at no charge.

Email   [email protected] – include your reservation number, cabin number, ship name sailing dates and, of course, your need.  You will receive an automated response and then a complete response within 2 days (in my experience). If your special need is in regards to a food allergy be sure and discuss it with the dining staff as well.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner – My Calendar

Once you’ve finished planning you can view My Calendar . This is a great way to double check the plans you made in the Cruise Planner. You can modify your selections in My Calendar. Your port times are also listed here which I think is very handy.

I just booked a cruise for my son and his family for January 9, 2022. When I went online I cannot find any shows available. Does this mean they are all taking up? I wish I would have know this, because I would have spent all that money on their cruise, not being able to see a show.

Hi Cheryl. I assume you booked one of the Oasis-class ships with the amazing shows? Let me know! Yes, there will be shows. They just aren’t available for reservations pre-cruise right now. I am hoping that it gets closer to the cruise things will start becoming available pre-cruise again. Baby steps to getting back to all of the fun things we love. Keep me posted and I hope you will invite them to join my Facebook group.

I use cruiseplanner a lot. So does the misses ..’. Do you know if I can book something (spa stuff. eg. ) without having it visible in the cruiseplanner afterwards? #surprises

It’s so sweet that you want to surprise your wife! I am unaware of a way that you could hide it in the planner. Typically spa services don’t sell out so you may want to book onboard and give her a special card or something. 🙂 Jill

Where in the cruise planner can you see if you have early, late, or my time dining? As well as the bed preferences (king or 2 twins)? I feel like the cruise planner has changed.. and not for the better 🙁

Hi Brittany, Yes, it has changed a bit. It’s on my to-do list to update this post. Dining preference, if you selected early or late, is set at the time of booking. If you booked through a travel agent, they can change that if you’d like to switch or you can call RC. Only “my-time” dining and specialty dining can be reserved within the planner.

Bedding preference is the same way and is typically set during your time of booking. However, I will say that some times when we get to our room, it’s the opposite. The room steward is always willing to switch this for you. It’s never an issue.

They appear to be making regular changes to not only the cruise planner but the online check-in and Crown & Anchor Society section. I love Royal Caribbean…but their site is known for being a little cranky.

Thanks for reading! Jillian

Hi Jillian, My family and I have booked a cruise for November from Sydney Australia. On the top of our cruise planner it states that we are unable to add anything to our cart due to payment not being paid. We have paid our deposit for the trip. Do you know if you have to have paid in full before these services become available because we were planning on paying the trip off over the course of the next few months Thank you and kind regards Alanna

Hi Alanna, Are you trying to make purchases such as dining or excursions or are you trying to book entertainment? In my experience, within the cruise planner, you can “purchase” items well in advance of your cruise without having made your final cruise payment. However, if you are on an Oasis Class or Quantum Class ship and you are trying to reserve/schedule shows, etc. those usually become available closer to 90-120 days prior to sailing. The message at the top regarding payment is odd to me though. Did you book directly with the cruise line or through a travel agent? Also, do you live in Australia or just sailing from Australia? Sorry for all of the follow-up questions but we will get it figured out! – Jillian

On the cruise planner how do you watch for price changes on cruise and other items like drink package? Thanks Tammy

Hi Tammy! That is a great question. If you are signed up for their email notifications you will likely get an email whenever they have a “sale”. However, most of the time it’s a lot of marketing speak. The drink package can be especially confusing. I have seen it listed at $47 per day, then the next day a banner will appear that it’s 25% off…yet, still somehow $47 per day. They also like to say, buy one get one-half off…which really equates to 25% off each. I typically buy the drink package whenever I feel like I’m getting a decent price and I make a note of the cost per day. Not the sale percentage. Then, I check back regularly to see the posted price. Again, ignore the percentage, just focus on the day rate. If you notice it at a lower price, buy it again and then cancel your previous purchase. Excursions aren’t usually as confusing but I have the same process. I make note of the actual price, ignoring the sale percentage. I hope that helps. Please reach out if you have any other questions and thank you so much for reading my blog. – Jill

I am so glad to have stumbled on your page! Already found great info for my friend who is traveling with a breathing device. Had no idea they would provide the distilled water for her. How do you sign up for their email alerts?

Hi Susan, I’m so glad that you stumbled upon my site as well. I hope you will consider subscribing.

If your friend would like to email [email protected] that will do the trick. She will need to tell them her need, her sailing dates, ship, and cabin number. When she arrives in her cabin/stateroom, she should mention to her room steward that she put in the request. They will get it all set up likely while she is at dinner.

Hi! We are sailing next Jan 6th (84 days away!!) and we still can’t book any entertainment or activities!! We will be on the Oasis of the Seas. Do you know when we will able to do so? Thanks and greetings from Chile!

Hi Claudio! Typically activities hit the cruise planner around 90 days out. RC is a little known for not being 100% reliable to those timelines though. Try logging out and logging in using a different web browser if possible. Sometimes that works! If not give it a week or so then feel free to email RC direct using the link at the bottom of their web page. Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for reading. – Jill

Oh no! I hope you weren’t one of the ones who got sick! A girlfriend and I sailed at that same time, but we were on Enchantment. Heard the passengers got a pretty “good deal” for being inconvenienced, so hope that was really the case for you. And greetings from Merritt Island…15 minutes from Port Canaveral! 🙂

We are going on the Allure in July 2019, how do I book the DreamWorks character breakfast

Hi Melissa, The character breakfast will be available in the Entertainment & Activities tab of the cruise planner. That will be available closer to your sailing. I usually book our dining about 90 days out. However, I find that RC doesn’t follow a strict schedule regarding their cruise planner. You may want to start looking about 120 days out. Thank you for reading my post! I hope you and your family have a great time! I just posted about the Allure this week if you’d like to check it out.

My cruise is 7 months away, I can book all my shore excursions and drink packages, but none of the Entertainment & Activities are available to reserve this far in advance. When do those usually become available ?

Hi Jeff, I am in the same situation. I will be on the Allure in March 2019 and Entertainment is not available to reserve yet. Which ship are you sailing? (Not all ships offer entertainment pre-booking.) The cruise planner has a bit of a mind of its own regarding timing. Keep in mind that they are a business so it’s in their best interest to sell you things as early as possible. The entertainment is typically included so there isn’t as much pressure on them to release it as early. At 7 months out, I would just check back every few weeks and it will magically become available. 😉 Don’t worry! You are ahead of the game and will be in great shape. I usually check for reservation opportunities about 90 days out. Thank you for reading my post. If you go to the printable section, you can create a cruise schedule to use on board.

My cruise planner and calendar show just fine on my computer but I am unable to print it. What can I do? I also thought of using my tablet to show it but that won’t work. As I have already said, what can I do?

Hi Jeff, thanks for reaching out. I am a Royal Caribbean fan but I admit that their site is far from perfect. I was able to print our calendar but it didn’t print out as I saw it on the screen. It printed oddly with an ad in the middle. This is one of the reasons I created my own customizable schedule. It requires that you enter the information again but it prints well! It’s available in the Travel Printable section of this site.

Alternatively, you can try a screenshot of the calendar and then print or you can use the RC mobile app. When we sailed on the Allure in March the app worked fairly well. The entire cruise planner should be accessible on your tablet when you are logged in and have internet. Good luck. I understand that it can be frustrating.

Where do I find the entertainment programs and reservation page?

Hi Debra! Along the top of the web page for the cruise planner, you should see a link that has Entertainment & Activities.

Hi, can I chek out cart for many times? I want to reserve entertainment now, but I don’t want tu pay for the drink yet. Thank you!!

Absolutely! Go ahead and reserve the entertainment. You can go back and make purchases.

How do I obtain a non-alcoholic drink menu before the cruise? I was never offered one during my last cruise. Thanks

Cynthia, thank you for reading my post. Here is a link to the beverage packages offered on Royal Caribbean cruises – https://www.royalcaribbean.com/experience/beverage-packages However, I understand that this doesn’t answer your specific question regarding a menu. In my experience, Royal Caribbean is pretty general about their brand offerings, especially in the liquor category. They instead note “top shelf” or items up to a $13 value, etc. You will find that different venues on board specialize in different drinks as well so they each have a slightly varied menu. Regarding non-alcoholic beverages, I know that they carry the Coca-Cola brand soft drink line. If you would like specialty coffees, non-alcoholic cocktails, etc. you would need to purchase the Refreshment Package or pay a la carte.

I think there website is HORRIBLE!!! I’ve wasted more time and energy and it has even soured me on wanting to go on the cruise. I’m going to call that web assist tomorrow. I am soooo burnt out on this.

Janet, I certainly understand your opinion. I have had my share of frustration at times as well. Oddly enough, for me, it seems to be during the cruise search. I know that they are in the process of “updates” so we will see what happens. In general, I believe the online check-in and cruise planner areas have gotten better. If you are looking to research or book a cruise, I highly recommend going through a travel agent. Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll try and help!

Thank you so much for answering my question. They were very helpful.

My husband and are are taking our very first cruise. We are going on an Alaskan cruise on June 22,2018. I have a few questions. 1. How do I know what shows will be on this. Cruise and who do I contact for reservations? 2. We will need transportation from our hotel in Seward to the pier. Do I need to arrange this myself? If I am at the airport and need transportation does Royal Caribbean provide this and what is the cost? 3. What restaurants are included in the price of the cruise? 4. We are scheduled for the late dining. Is this at a specific restaurant or all of them? What would I need to do if I wanted to change to an earlier time? 5. What would I need to do if I wanted to upgrade to a balcony and what would the cost be? We are on an outside with a window.

Thank you very much. I am sure I will have more questions closer to departure.

Hi Debra, thanks so much for reading my blog post. You have a lot of great questions. I will try and help you out here with a few of them. I’m not sure what boat you are sailing on so shows will be specific to your boat. Typically the Oasis and Quantum class ships are the only ones you need to reserve shows for with the exception of the ice skating show on some boats. If reservations are required, you will be able to reserve those in the cruise planner located on the Royal Caribbean website. 2. Transportation – yes, you will need to set up your transportation from the airport and hotel. Are you flying in the day before your departure? Royal Caribbean, will likely have a transportation/shuttle option but you will need to reserve. Your hotel will likely offer a shuttle service as well, just ask. There will likely be a fee. 3. Dining – Main Dining and the Wind Jammer buffet are included in the price of your cruise. And, yes, you will be assigned to a specific dining room. If you would like to switch to the earlier dining, go see the head waiter who will have open hours the first day of your cruise. If you would like to upgrade to a balcony room, you should contact your travel agency or Royal Caribbean right away. Balcony rooms go fast. I hope this helps. Most of this information will be in your cruise planner on their website. If you aren’t comfortable with the website, just give them a call. They will be happy to help you. (866) 562-7625 just let them know that you already have a cruise booked and have your reservation handy. But, if you used a travel agency, start with them first. I hope this helps! – Jillian

And Debra you will LOVE Alaska! I’m excited for you!

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has some of the largest ships at sea. The company sails around the globe, offering itineraries for all interests and a handful of world cruises that can last several months.

Similar to airline and hotel brands, cruise lines also have loyalty programs, and Royal Caribbean is no exception. Its Crown and Anchor Society rewards repeat cruisers interested in maximizing their onboard perks. Here’s what you need to know about the loyalty program and why “It pays to be loyal to Royal" as the cruise line says.

How do you earn points for Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society?

After completing your first cruise, you will earn points every time you sail with Royal Caribbean, accruing one point for each night you’re on board. You'll earn double points per night if you stay in a suite. The more points you earn, the higher your elite status.

Note that elite status earning requirements are based on lifetime point accrual — not a calendar year like most other loyalty programs.

Don't worry if you forget to sign up; taking your first cruise automatically enrolls you in the program. However, you will need to create a Crown and Anchor login to view your online account, which will help you keep track of the points you earn.

Can you earn points with a Royal Caribbean credit card?

Even though Royal Caribbean has its own co-branded credit card , you can’t use it to help you reach Crown and Anchor elite status. Instead, the points you earn by spending with the card can be used to enhance your cruise experience.

You can redeem points for onboard credits, cruise discounts, room upgrades and companion fares. The only way to earn points toward Crown and Anchor elite status is by sailing on a cruise.

Crown and Anchor Society elite status levels

There are six elite status levels in the Crown and Anchor loyalty program. As an added benefit for those who cruise with their family, children younger than 18 automatically hold the same status as their parents (with the exception of the Pinnacle Club tier).

Here’s what you can expect to receive at each tier of the Crown and Anchor Society.

Gold is the first elite status tier, which you'll reach after earning 3 points. As a Gold member, you receive:

A newsletter with advance notice of new ships, itineraries and special deals.

Exclusive rates on some sailings and itineraries.

Access to a private lounge with continental breakfast before departure.

One additional cruise point for each night when paying a single rate in a double occupancy stateroom.

Discounts on Wi-Fi, spa, food and beverage options.

Platinum is the next elite status, which members reach after accruing 30 points as a member. In addition to all of the Gold perks, as a Platinum member, you’ll receive:

Exclusive rates on balcony and suite staterooms.

Reciprocal status with Celebrity Cruises Captain’s Club.

A special onboard event on sailings five nights or longer.

Robes in the cabin.

Laundry discounts.

Once you reach 55 points, you move to the Emerald tier, which provides all the perks of Gold and Platinum plus these additional things:

Welcome water in your stateroom (two bottles per adult).

Lapel pin to recognize your Emerald status.

Now you’re starting to crack the code on special perks with Royal Caribbean. Once you earn 80 points, you reach the Diamond level and receive the benefits of all the lower status tiers plus these extras:

Chef’s choice welcome gift on sailings five nights or longer.

Four complimentary drinks per day.

Priority waitlist for shore excursions and spa appointments.

Access to the Crown or Silver lounge with complimentary snacks and nightly happy hour.

Priority waitlist for preferred seats in the main dining room.

Four daily complimentary nonalcoholic drinks for kids.

One day of free Wi-Fi.

Plus, a commemorative crystal block is awarded when you accrue 140 points and again for every 70 points afterward.

Diamond Plus

The Diamond Plus level is for serious cruisers since it kicks in once you’ve earned 175 points. It comes with all the perks of the lower tiers as well as these benefits:

Dedicated call center for reservations.

Choice of a special in-room amenity, such as wine, strawberries or cheese plate.

Five complimentary drinks per day.

Deluxe beverage package discounts.

Priority seating at entertainment venues (theater, Ice show and AquaTheater).

Two days of free Wi-Fi.

One free laundry service on sailings five nights or longer.

Complimentary add-on spa treatment.

Five daily complimentary nonalcoholic drinks for kids.

Although still in the same elite tier, for members who have earned at least 340 points, there are even more benefits:

Lunch and wine with an officer on sailings seven nights or longer.

Upgraded bathroom toiletries.

Reduced single supplement cruise fare.

Pinnacle Club

Once you accrue 700 points, you’re awarded Pinnacle Club status. This is the highest tier you can earn, and it includes all of the benefits of the lower tiers plus:

Specialty dining discounts, exclusive daily breakfast and access to a private restaurant.

Free Wi-Fi for one device for the entire sailing.

Six complimentary drinks per day.

Personalized lapel pin.

Complimentary cruise.

Another complimentary cruise for each additional 350 cruise points earned.

Six daily complimentary nonalcoholic drinks for kids.

The free cruises are a great bonus, and the first two cruises earned (at 700 and 1,050 points) are eligible for a balcony stateroom on a seven-night Caribbean sailing. You can also choose to redeem a $2,400 credit toward another cruise. The cruise must be taken within one year of earning it, and the ship must have been sailing for at least one year.

Any additional complimentary cruises earned can be redeemed for a junior suite stateroom on a seven-night Caribbean sailing or as a voucher for $3,200 on any other sailing. They’re not valid during the holidays or peak summer months, and the member has to pay taxes, fees and port surcharges.

Are there any Crown and Anchor partner benefits?

There are several partner perks that Crown and Anchor Society members can take advantage of when they’re not sailing. Here’s what you can expect:

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

Go immediately to the car without stopping by the counter at certain locations.

Choose cars from the Gold Plus area at select locations.

MGM Rewards

MGM elite tier status match.

Celebrity Cruises

Elite tier status match (for Crown and Anchor Platinum level and higher).

Is it worth joining the Crown and Anchor Society?

When sailing with Royal Caribbean, it is worth joining the loyalty program — after all, you’re automatically enrolled after your first cruise. Once you reach elite status, you’ll enjoy plenty of perks, which increase the more you sail.

After reaching Platinum level, you’ll enjoy elite status perks on Celebrity cruises. While you can’t spend your way to elite status with the Royal Caribbean credit card, using it can provide discounts on your next cruise. And any time you sail, you can get closer to the next tier of the Crown and Anchor Society program.

Royal Caribbean’s My Time Dining: Everything you need to know

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Royal Caribbean offers its cruise guests a choice of either traditional dining with set times and assigned tables or a more flexible plan called My Time Dining. If you’ve never cruised with Royal Caribbean or tried My Time Dining, you may wonder if this option is right for you and your travel group.

We’ve previously covered the broad definitions of traditional versus flexible dining options across the mainstream lines, but let’s get down to specifics of what to expect with Royal Caribbean’s My Time Dining plan.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

Royal Caribbean’s My Time Dining: The basics

My Time Dining frees you from a set dinner time and assigned table and tablemates in the main dining room. Some Royal Caribbean ships have multiple main dining rooms; others have one main dining room with multiple floors. You will be assigned to a specific dining space dedicated to serving passengers on the flexible plan. It will be noted on your Sea Pass cruise card.

Beyond the designated venue, nothing else is assigned. You make the choice of when to eat each day within the serving hours assigned to My Time Dining rooms. The most common My Time Dining hours are from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Those hours (particularly the start time) may vary depending on the ship and the itinerary, but you can always find the details in the Royal Caribbean app, on the dining room information in your cabin’s interactive TV or in the daily Cruise Compass news bulletin.

For example, you can dine at 6 p.m. one night and 8:30 p.m. the next if that works best with your schedule. You can also skip the main dining room and dine at the buffet or a specialty restaurant.

Related: 35 Royal Caribbean cruise tips and tricks that will make your voyage better

Your dining choice is made during the booking process. If you book your cruise online, you’ll want to watch for the dining option question. If you book through a travel advisor, make sure they know your preference. The alternative is to allow the cruise line to choose for you, and it’s not always easy to change your dinner time.

Pro tip : The bigger the ship, the more complicated it becomes to make dining changes once you are on board because the cruise staff is working to satisfy more people.

It all sounds simple enough, right? Make your choice during booking, then show up at the correct dining room each night whenever you are hungry. However, the details can get tricky. Here are the most common questions asked online about My Time Dining, as well as the answers.

Where can I eat when I choose My Time Dining?

You are free to eat in any food venue on the ship (during its hours of operation) for breakfast, lunch and snacks. For dinner, you may eat in the dining room assigned to you, the buffet and other casual eateries, or a specialty restaurant (though you’ll likely need to make reservations ahead of time).

Are the menus the same for early and late diners as they are for My Time Dining?

Yes. The main dining room menus for traditional and My Time Dining groups are the same each night.

Do I need to tell the maitre d’ or waiter I’m not coming to dinner some nights?

You do not need to let the dining staff know unless you have made reservations for a table in your assigned dining room. Then it’s appropriate to cancel the reservation.

Do I need to make reservations?

Reservations are not required for My Time Dining on Royal Caribbean, but they are strongly recommended. If you make reservations, you will have a separate, faster-moving line at the entrance to the dining room. Some guests may prefer to eat at the same time every evening. Others may want to reserve dinner times based on their activity schedule or dine elsewhere some nights based on the menu.

Pro tip: You can preview menus in the Royal Caribbean app, but they won’t appear until your sailing dates are close. You can, however, see any ship’s current menu plus about a month’s worth of sailings – even if you don’t have a cruise booked.

Here’s how:

  • After you log into your account on the app, you’ll either see your next booked cruise or a screen that reads, “Let’s look up your cruise.”
  • Choose the “Browse our ships” option at the bottom of the screen.
  • Pick your ship, then pick any of the dates shown.
  • From there, you can look at dining options and menus for that sail date.

If your cruise is booked too far in advance to see menus, swipe left on the home screen to see your profile and choose “Select a different cruise” to view upcoming dates. The current dates should always have menus, but they might not match what is served on your cruise.

How and when do I make reservations for My Time Dining?

You can make reservations pre-cruise in the online cruise planner as soon as you pay the deposit for your cruise. Once you board the ship, you can manage your reservations in the Royal Caribbean app. You can also make or check reservations in person at the dining room entrance during embarkation.

Star Class suite guests can have their Royal Genie make reservations for them. Suite guests in Grand Suites and above can also request reservations through the suite concierge in the suite lounge on ships that have those.

How long will I wait to be seated if I show up without a reservation?

Think of it like any popular land-based restaurant. Show up at a peak time without a reservation – or with a large group — and your wait will be longer. I’ve heard of wait times as long as an hour — often on the first night of the cruise while everyone adjusts. If you only make one main dining room reservation, make it for the first night you plan to eat there. You’d be amazed by how much that will smooth out the wrinkles in the process.

You may be able to speed up the wait time by agreeing to share a table with others instead of insisting on a table only for your group. The maitre d’ may also suggest you return at an appointed time if the wait is exceptionally long (essentially making an impromptu reservation for you). Royal Caribbean has used pagers in the past, and some ships in the fleet may still use them occasionally to notify guests when their table is ready. However, it is not a common practice.

Related: Which cruise ship activities should you book ahead of time?

Can I change to a traditional early or late dining time during the cruise?

The easy option would be to stick with My Time Dining and ask for the same dinner time each night. You can even request the same table and waiter, essentially re-creating the traditional experience. Note that My Time Dining starts a bit later than the “early” seating in the traditional dining rooms, which is generally at 5:30 p.m. The late seating of traditional dining is usually 8 p.m. Both seatings of traditional dining may vary by ship and itinerary.

If you are dissatisfied with the My Time Dining experience once on board, the cruise line allows one change per cruise if space is available for your party in the traditional dining room.

Related: Dining mistakes you must fix on your next cruise

Can I request a table for two?

You certainly can. That does not mean your request can always be accommodated. As in a land-based restaurant, table selection may be limited if you go at a busy time. You may need to choose between eating at your desired time at a shared table or waiting a while for a two-top to be ready.

This is another good reason for making reservations. It’s far easier for the dining room staff to accommodate your wishes if they receive your request in advance.

Also, if you like the table and waitstaff you are assigned on the first night, tell the maitre d’ you’d like that table every night. If it’s possible, they will make it happen for you.

Related: The 10 best cruises for couples seeking romance and together time at sea

Can I eat dinner more than once (or at two venues)?

There is no rule saying you cannot. I have been known to have dinner at one time, head to the early show, then return to the dining room for dessert and a cup of tea. I’ve also enjoyed appetizers with friends early in the evening, only to return or even go to a specialty restaurant for my actual dinner at a later time.

You might think you can avoid the newly implemented surcharge on extra lobster tails by dining twice on lobster night and ordering one tail each visit. However, this dining hack does not work. The staff would notice that you’re a repeat guest and charge for the second lobster tail accordingly.

Can I select My Time Dining on every cruise?

You can stick with My Time Dining or swap back and forth if your needs change on different cruises. Dining options sometimes sell out as the cruise fills up, potentially leaving you stuck with traditional seating when you wanted My Time Dining or vice versa. If that happens, your best option is to go straight to the main dining room upon boarding to try and change it.

Are friends allowed to join us for dinner if we have My Time Dining?

Friends who have chosen My Time Dining are free to join you. You are not locked into that table for two you requested on previous nights. However, according to Royal Caribbean, friends previously assigned a traditional dining time will give that up for the rest of the cruise if they join you in the My Time Dining room for a meal. (Remember that one change per cruise rule?)

Will we miss the shows if we choose My Time Dining?

Shows on Royal Caribbean ships are timed to coordinate with the traditional dining times. Opting for My Time Dining may throw a wrench in your entertainment plans if you aren’t careful. The solution is to determine which shows you must see and coordinate your dinner plans around showtimes.

You’ll want to account for the possibility of wait times in your plans. The worst-case scenario is that you must skip dessert to make it to the show. You can always ask for dessert to go, though.

How does tipping work with My Time Dining?

Pre-paid gratuities are required to participate in My Time Dining. Those tips are then shared among all My Time Dining waiters. You are welcome to offer additional tips to specific waiters.

Related: Tipping on a cruise ship: Everything you need to know

Is the dress code the same for My Time Dining?

Novice cruisers may think that My Time Dining is the casual cousin of the traditional dining routine and that flexibility should also apply to the dress code. That’s not the case.

The suggested attire each evening is the same for all main dining rooms. I will tell you, though, the My Time Dining room tends to feel a touch more casual most nights. For one thing, more families with children lean toward My Time Dining, meaning you’ll see a more relaxed attitude to the official dress code some nights.

Rules regarding swimsuits, ragged jeans, athletic wear and shorts are generally still enforced.

Who should choose My Time Dining?

My Time Dining on Royal Caribbean is best for families with young children, people with packed activity schedules and those who prefer a flexible routine. It’s also ideal for extroverts who like to meet new people over dinner every night, as well as insular groups who don’t want to sit with strangers.

It’s nice to not be locked into a set time to eat. Even if you make reservations for the whole week before you set foot on the ship, you can easily cancel or change them, leaving you free to eat when hunger strikes rather than when the clock strikes.

Who should avoid My Time Dining?

If routine is your thing, you may be happier with the traditional dining option. Once you know where your table is (traditional diners have the table number printed on their cards), there’s no waiting to get into dinner. You walk through the door and head to your assigned table.

Large groups traveling together who want to share the evening meal most nights will find traditional dining works best. My Time Dining adds too much confusion and requires a great deal of communication every day to pick a dinner time, and your large party may not always be accommodated at the same table.

Bottom line

Royal Caribbean’s My Time Dining plan adds flexibility to the dinner hour for those who want it. You choose the flexible dining option during the booking process, then eat dinner in the main dining room assigned to you during the venue’s open hours. Choosing My Time Dining does not impact where you eat any other meal, nor does it affect your ability to skip the main dining room some nights in favor of the buffet or a specialty restaurant.

The main downside is the possibility of waiting in line to be seated. Plan ahead with reservations or show up at non-peak dining times, and you can avoid this problem and enjoy your dinner with minimal hassles.

A man who went overboard a Royal Caribbean cruise last week has been identified as Levion Parker.

The US man from North Port, Florida, who was a former high school football player and avid hunter, was holidaying with his family aboard Liberty of the Seas when tragedy struck.

The 20-year-old had reportedly gone overboard at 4am last Thursday when the 18-storey ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale in Florida after a four-day cruise to the Amber Cover cruise port in the Dominican Republic.

According to local media the was located about 90km off Great Inagua, the southernmost island of the Bahamas located near the eastern tip of Cuba, when the incident took place.

Levion Parker, 20, from Florida, has been identified as the young man who went overboard a Royal Caribbean cruise last Thursday. Picture: Facebook

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told news.com.au the ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who took over the search.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share,” the spokesperson said on Monday.

Early that morning when passengers woke up to the news, Amy Phelps Fouse, who was on-board the ship, said it was “definitely sombre”.

Ms Phelps Fouse told the New York Post many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person.

The ship, Liberty of the Seas, was returning to Fort Lauderdale in Florida following a four day cruise to the Amber Cover cruise port in the Dominican Republic.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” she said of the incident on Thursday.

“They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

Another passenger who took to Reddit to post about the heartbreaking incident said they became aware of the tragedy when the captain broke the news the following morning.

“They announced it over the PA system while we were at breakfast at the entire room went silent,” they wrote. “Then the rest of the cruise felt oddly casual.”

The young man was reportedly “drunk” on the night but details around this are unclear as the minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean ships on voyages from North America or the Caribbean is 21.

According to the Daily Mail , he was thought to be staying with his family on deck 10, a flight below the whirlpools and hot tubs of deck 11 where he had spent time with his brother and another passenger the night of the incident before things took a horrifying turn.

Levion’s father Francel Parker, who owns an airconditioning business, was invited, together with his family, aboard the ship as guests of Florida-based airconditioning wholesalers Tropic Supply to mark the company’s 50th anniversary.

Francel told the Daily Mail the family is consulting lawyers and is planning to issue a statement.

Travel lawyer Jim Walker said in a blog that Royal Caribbean along with the vast majority of US cruise companies have yet to install automatic man overboard systems as required by the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010.

“Such automatic MOB systems utilise state-of-the-art motion detection, video and infra-red technology and radar to instantly detect when someone goes over the rails of a cruise ship,” he wrote.

“The system can then track the person’s movements in the water even at night-time,” adding the infra-red technology would be crucial in assisting the ship in locating and rescuing the person in the water.

“Without such a system, the chances of locating an overboard person in the water at night it like finding a needle in a haystack.”

The US Coast Guard has suspended its search for the missing young man.

According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

A flight attendant has lifted the lid on passenger etiquette and revealed exactly what she’s love to see everyone on a plane do.

A man who fell to his death at a popular tourist spot in Far North Queensland had plans to live in Australia before tragedy struck.

An Australian WWII bomber and its four crewmen have been identified 81 years after the plane went down in the waters off Papua New Guinea.
