safari trading cards

Safari Cards were an English translation of a set of collectible zoological information facts first devised and published in Switzerland. Original publisher Éditions Rencontre in Lausanne, Switzerland specialized in subscription encyclopedias and other educational toys in the 1950s and ’60s. Intended explicitly from the very beginning to democratize learning and bring the classics of French-language literature to the public at an inexpensive cost , one of Rencontre’s other collectible marketing schemes was L’Encyclopédie du monde actuel , a set of fact cards that could be assembled by the child collector to form a full set of encyclopedias. The collectible book series was a popular concept in the postwar Francophone world .

Earlier than this, the book club , a long-standing model on both sides of the Atlantic, was a way for families who had not inherited massive libraries to assemble and collect an impressive display of erudition in the home, whether it was the classics of the Western canon, new popular fiction (sometimes given a lease on inclusion in the canon thanks to massive success, like Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With The Wind ), or an authoritative encyclopedia that could be used by the children in the family for school reports.

In 1976, American publishers Margrace Corporation of Middlesex, New Jersey optioned and translated the French language Safari Cards and used TV ads like the one above (from 1981) to entice children and their parents to subscribe for an educational experience. The cards themselves were compulsively collectible and sortable, and contained a real wealth of information. As the khaki-clad pitchman in the TV ad mentions, “These symbols let you file your cards the way naturalists do.” The cards’ headers were color-coded by climate and habitat, with a world map showing their geographical spread, and supplemented with symbols noting their taxonomic information (admittedly useless without the collectible card featuring the symbols’ key and legend). The backs of the cards featured a fairly substantial explanation of the animals’ behavior, habitat, and other fun facts. (Sample cards can be seen here .) In an era well before Wikipedia, in a time when the closest encyclopedia was likely at the local public library, Safari Cards were a boon to promising naturalists.

Safari Cards followed a marketing model familiar to most consumers in the 1970s and 1980s: advertisements in wide-circulating print magazines (like TV Guide ) or through long-form television commercials, and a subscription model where your first set of orders would be close to free, after which the costs would kick in. These sorts of offers ran parallel with other marketing schemes. The collectible card set model was thoroughly milked by Margrace: they also offered a series titled “ Story of America ” with a practically identical visual design to Safari Cards. Margrace also branched out into  comic-book versions of classic literature  later in the 1980s, a quaint and old-fashioned offering considering the golden years of lines like Classics Illustrated had petered out in the early ’70s.

Throughout the rest of the 1980s, other publishers’ attempts to get on the buy now/pay later gravy train abounded: full-color encyclopedias for children were often sold in grocery stores , either volume by volume in the supermarket itself or by picking up a discounted first volume at the market and mail-ordering the rest. As seen in the mission statement of Editions Rencontre, these inexpensive offers appealed to working- and middle-class families seeking to provide an educational edge for their children. But they were also at their root exploitative, locking those same paycheck-to-paycheck families into schemes where “ cancel at any time ” might be  much easier said than done . Given the recent return of a vogue for subscription boxes , it seems like this model is alive and well in the 21st century, expanding its tendrils into an upper-middle class desirous of curated experiences in the form of monthly treats delivered to its door.

Collector’s Cards - A Marketing Strategy

One widely overlooked marketing strategy is the use of custom sports cards. Collector’s cards have been around for a long time now, it started with baseball, now you can find just about any type of sport card you are looking for. Custom sports cards can be an easy marketing method because you can print your label on them. Overtime, the custom sports cards will be distributed amongst a vide variety of age groups and will ultimately be advertising your company logo. Custom sports cards are becoming increasingly popular and seem to be headed in a good direction. One great feature of of this potential marketing strategy is that most of them are traded, online and offline, so a company will benefit from having collector’s cards traded amongst other trading card collectors. Another great benefit of advertising from collector's cards is the cost. Companies can add a logo to custom sports cards for a very inexpensive price, which leads to a low-cost effective marketing strategy. Overall, companies will benefit greatly just by placing their logo on collector’s cards. It is an opportunity that should not be passed up, especially for new companies that are wanting to launch a new product in a hurry.

8 Best Places To Sell Bulk Pokemon Cards For Cash

Posted on August 9, 2023 - Tom Blake - This post may contain affiliate links that compensate us if you click or sign up. Please read our affiliate disclaimer for more information.

Over the past few years, Pokemon card selling has been all the rage. Celebrities and collectors alike have flipped some incredibly expensive cards online, like Shiny Charizards worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I already have a guide on the best places to sell Pokemon cards on This Online World to help people get started with this flipping craze.

However, that guide focuses a lot on selling  individual  and  rare  cards for money, not bulk cards. But in reality, bulk, common cards are what most people have.

So today, I'm covering some of the best places to sell bulk Pokemon cards for cash.

If you're ready to turn that old box of cards in your basement into quick cash, this is the post for you.

Where To Sell Bulk Pokemon Cards

I've sold my old Pokemon cards in bulk before to make quick money . And after doing some research, there's actually plenty of other places to sell bulk Pokemon cards that don't require much effort.

Just note that most cards aren't worth very much, so you're going to need a large collection to make serious cash.

1. Full Grip Games

One of the most popular options for bulk Pokemon card selling is Full Grip Games. This website lets you sell bulk common/uncommons and energy cards in increments of 100 or 1,000 .

FullGripGames

It also accepts rares and other cards, and its bulk buy list has a breakdown of all the packs and cards it accepts as well as prices.

What's nice is that you don't have to sort your bulk cards; you just have to separate rate/holos from commons and uncommons but that's it.

Furthermore, Full Grip Games grades your cards when they arrive. If your sale price changes because of grading, Full Grip Games emails you to let you know.

Buylists process in about 72 hours, but it can take up to 10 business days if a lot of people are selling cards.

One downside is that you have to pay for shipping, but this is often the case when selling bulk Pokemon cards. And if you happen to be near Akron, Ohio, you can drop-off your bulk cards at the store.

As for how you get paid, options include cash, PayPal money , or store credit.

2. TCGplayer

I mentioned TCGplayer in our main article on Pokemon card selling, but it's also one of the best options for bulk sellers because of how popular it is. And this goes for other card games too, including Yugioh and Magic .

All you have to do is create a listing under the “Inventory Tab” and then upload a list of what you're selling and some photos of your collection.

TCGPlayer

From there, other players can contact you to buy your collection or to ask questions. And what's cool about TCGplayer is that you get more selling perks and tools and you level-up your seller ranking.

This reward system makes it both useful for one-time sellers but also if you run a card flipping business or comic and games shop of some kind.

And, you can also download the TCGplayer app and scan cards you want to sell or check information like pricing.

Unsurprisingly, another excellent way to sell bulk Pokemon cards is to list your entire collection on eBay.

People sell booster sets, bulk collections, and Pokemon binders on eBay all the time. It's also a popular place for selling bulk rares and holographic cards if you really have an expensive collection you're trying to sell.

Many sellers have listings in the 500 to 1,000 card range as well, but you can find smaller or larger collections .

Just note that there's a 5% seller fee for non-sport trading cards on eBay, which includes Pokemon cards. You also decide if you cover shipping or if the buyer is responsible.

Another popular option for selling Pokemon cards in bulk is to sell them directly to Deriums , a Pokemon-focused card game store.

Deriums sell bulk Pokemon cards

You can find a current bulk buy-list on its website, and current prices include:

  • Uncommons/Commons : $0.01 per card.
  • Non-Holo Rares : $0.06 per card.
  • Holo Rares & Holo Commons/Uncommons : $0.07 per card.
  • Bulk V/EX/GX Cards : $0.50 per card.
  • Bulk Vmax Cards : $0.75 per card.

Cards have to be in English and near mint condition, which is generally the case when selling any bulk Pokemon cards. As for payment, Derium offers PayPal cash or store credit.

Derium says it takes around two to three days to process bulk shipments, but it can take longer if it's dealing with a lot of orders.

Also note that you pay for shipping when you send your bulk cards in.

5. Pokemon Facebook Groups

The Facebook Marketplace is one of the best places to sell your unused stuff. And it doesn't matter if you're selling bulk Pokemon cards, old furniture , or sports cards ; you can probably find a buyer in your area.

Pokemon card collections are a popular thing to sell on Facebook Marketplace . So, you can start by listing your collection there, and you get to set the price which is nice.

Pokemon Buy Sell Facebook Groups

Buyers can and will probably negotiate, but overall, this is one of the best ways to get some quick cash for your cards. And you don't have to worry about shipping either.

If this route fails, you can try selling your bulk collection in the various Pokemon Facebook buy-and-sell groups that are out there.

There are plenty of groups with tens of thousands of members. And again, you can work out the shipping and payment arrangements with buyers or direct them to your listing if you're selling somewhere like eBay.

6. Safari Zone Collectibles

Safari Zone Collectibles is another popular place to sell bulk Pokemon cards, and it's rated  very  highly over on the Pokemon subreddit.

Unfortunately, the company has currently paused buying bulk Pokemon cards from players. But it's worth adding to your list in case it resumes purchasing bulk collections.

And if you want to beef up your deck or collection with some more cards, you can always shop from Safari Zone Collectibles as well.

7. Craigslist

If you have bulk Pokemon cards to sell but don't want to deal with online sales, Craigslist could be for you.

I've sold plenty of things on Craigslist over the years, including watches , old guitars, sneakers , and my old Pokemon cards and MTG cards.

Creating a listing is free. All you have to do is take some photos of your bulk collection, set your price, and then let buyers contact you to negotiate.

If you live in a decently-sized city, you should be able to sell your collection pretty quickly. And this is really a fast and effective way to sell commons and bulk cards to other collectors or parents who want to buy cards for their kids.

My post on Facebook Marketplace vs Craigslist compares these two selling platforms in more detail if you want to learn more.

8. Top Cut Central

One final option to sell your bulk Pokemon cards for cash is to sell through Top Cut Central .

It doesn't always have the highest rates versus some of the competitors on this list, but it buys massive collections and pretty much any card as long as cards are near-mint and English .

TopCutCentral

The rates for holographic cards is also pretty similar to many other options on this list. And one plus is that you can sell basic energy cards for $0.005 each.

Some stores don't even buy energy cards, so it's nice that you can at least get these cards off your hands.

It's very important to sort your cards by rarity however, and Top Cut Central outlines how to sell bulk cards to it on its website.

You pay for shipping like most of the other options on this list. For payment, you can choose PayPal cash or store credit.

How To Sell Bulk Pokemon Cards

Now that you know some of the best places to sell bulk Pokemon cards, it's time to cover a few tips and tricks that will make your selling process much easier.

1. Sort Your Collection

The first step in selling Pokemon cards in bulk is to sort your entire collection. This is because you usually need to categorize cards based on rarity and remove cards below near-mint condition that aren't eligible for sale. You should also sort your energy cards into their own group.

This is the most time-consuming process, but most bulk buyers require this. And it's important since it helps you understand the value of your collection.

For massive collections, you can also use software like Quicklist Card Scanning to sort and organize your entire collection much faster. This is what TCGplayer actually suggests.

2. Use Website Buy-Lists

Website buy-lists are your best friend. They tell you exactly what current card prices are, what you can and can't sell, and everything you need to know to start selling.

It can seem like a pain to fill out and submit a buy-list. But if you're selling cards online, this step is necessary but often worth the effort.

3. Consider Local Buyers

If you want to sell your cards as quickly as possible, selling at local comic book stores or with apps like Facebook Marketplace could be your best option.

The downside is that you're probably going to get slightly less money than if you sell online. But you can get paid in fast cash and you don't have to worry about shipping.

Apps like OfferUp are also a great way to find local buyers. And you can even resort to tactics like throwing a garage sale or selling at a pawn shop .

4. Ship Cards Properly

The final tip for selling bulk Pokemon cards for cash is to really pay attention to shipping instructions. Websites often have very clear requirements for how you organize and ship your cards. Plus, you need to properly pack and ship cards so they don't get damaged.

Many sellers usually line their collection with bubble wrap or packing paper to protect the cards as well.

This YouTube video from Dr. Applesauce breaks down the exact process for selling bulk Pokemon cards as well if you want a step-by-step guide.

The video also covers some other selling options and tips for how you can organize and ship your collection.

Final Thoughts

I hope this guide on how to sell bulk Pokemon cards helps you find a buyer for your collection so you can make some fast cash.

Pokemon is one of the most popular card games around, and it's only gotten more popular in the last few years. So, you shouldn't have a shortage of buyers if you know where to sell.

Between online card buying websites and various local options, you also have numerous ways to sell depending on your preferences.

Best of luck with selling!
