Smoky Burn Outfitting prides itself on having expert guides for hunting and fishing in the Great Saskatchewan, Canadian Outdoors! To help you get trophy wild game it’s best to come prepared. Here are some FAQ’s we get asked. If you have any other questions please contact us today or visit our resources section.

BEAR HUNTS: If you are hunting with a bow in bear season and do not have a rifle with you can wear camo and no colours need to be worn. WHITETAIL DEER: If you are hunting whitetail with a bow in October, you can wear camo- no colours are needed. If you are hunting with a bow in November, when the rifle season is on, you must wear colours.

All that is needed for colours is a blaze orange vest – “NEW”. A orange hat or toque will also be required.

Yes, we have some heaters, if you want to ensure you have a heater it is best to bring your own. We do not supply propane.

In the past five years, the weather seems to have warmed up a lot. Temperatures in the morning can be below freezing. The appropriate clothing is your best option to keep you comfortable. In extreme weather we have heaters.

We have all kinds of stands. We use ladder stands, lock on, permanent tree stands, ground blinds, elevated blinds (8-10 feet up) and 1-man pop up tent blinds.

The rut in Saskatchewan can run any time in November. The pre-rut is usually in the second week in November with bucks chasing. Doe’s usually are not receptive. Week 3 and 4 in November usually brings the peak rut activity. In recent years, the weather seems to affect the rut a little more!

The most common calibre is a 300. 7mm is also common. The bucks in our area have tremendous body size, so you want some knock down power.

When you harvest your trophy, we cape the animal and freeze the hide and clean up the skull for transport back home with you.

At Safari River

What to expect.

Safari River Outfitters offers some of the best white-tailed deer hunting in the world.

Since 1990 we have been sending hunters home with large-bodied, heavy-horned northern trophy whitetails. These northern monarchs are exciting to hunt.  We have the habitat, the numbers and the genetics for productive hunting and through selective harvest we constantly produce monster whitetail results.

Our exclusive deer-hunting zones spread over 535,000 almost contiguous acres have been well managed for many years and are not over-harvested.

Long before the season starts, our guides are out scouting, looking for sign and setting up baits, blinds and cameras. The key to our success is in this pre-season work. Through the years, we have learned a great deal about where deer travel between our 150 stand sites. With the use of trail cameras we have an even better idea of what awaits our hunters.

We love what we do and our team works hard to ensure your greatest opportunity for success. Our stands are no closer than three miles from each other and we are always keeping an eye on weather and wind direction to make sure your opportunity for a trophy is at the highest point.

The Location

We are located in one of the best areas in the province for trophy whitetail.

Located near the town of Meadow Lake, our deer-hunting operation encompasses hundreds of thousands of acres of forest land, primarily aspens but interspersed with spruce and pine. The varied terrain, which includes natural meadows, forest openings, ridges, lakes and logged areas, provide vast stretches of game-rich natural habitat. Plus, our area also has huge tracts of farmland surrounded by all that boreal forest, so we have an ideal combination of natural habitat and agricultural-provided nutrition for antler growth. Our area also features amazing genetics, and has for decades. The world-record typical Hanson buck was harvested only an hour south of our lodge. Our continuous close and symbiotic relationship with local farmers allows us to hunt in exclusive areas with zero pressure

Simply put, this is prime white-tailed deer habitat.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1:  Arrival Day

Enjoy settling into the comfortable and beautiful Lakeside or Riverside Lodge. Accommodations include Wi-Fi, cable TV (and a hot tub at Lakeside lodge). 

• You can sight in your bow or firearm, go for a UTV sightseeing ride, fish or just relax and settle in near a bonfire
• Enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Chef Craig (Riverside) or Chef Lori (Lakeside)
• Welcome speech before or after supper by Lance and Emily
• 8 a.m.: Breakfast prepared by Chef 
• Pack your own lunch (A sandwich-meat spread and snacks are provided.)
• 10 a.m.: Hunter meetings with your guide to go over details of your hunt, including safety equipment, game camera pictures, departure time as well as answer your questions
• Sight in your bow/firearm (If you didn’t do so already.)
• Depart in the afternoon with your guide
• After hunting, arrive back to lodge, wash up and prepare for the evening
• Dinner (In Saskatchewan this time of year it is light until approximately 9:30 p.m. so supper can be late.)
• Prepare for morning hunt

Days 3-6:  Repeated hunt schedule (Meetings, sighting in not required.) as Day 2

• Once you have harvested your deer, you can relax or enjoy numerous other adventures 

Day 7:  Departure Day

• Breakfast and optional morning hunt, if desired
• Pack up. Your guide will help pack your deer hide, antlers and meat for travel
• Depart for Saskatoon or Edmonton

In the right spot for a great hunt

There’s nothing like the anticipation of settling into your blind in the early hours of the morning waiting for first light and what might appear before your eyes. 

As you sit there listening intently and hearing your heartbeat, there is adrenaline like you can’t imagine when the silence is broken with that crunch through the snow. Are those the footsteps of the buck you have been dreaming about?

Our whitetail territory is 20 townships of remote wilderness. Vast landscapes of spruce, pine and poplar forest interspersed with all kinds of lakes, creeks and bog are home to a lot of animals that have never seen a human before.

More than just a deer hunt, this is an awesome wilderness vacation. Hunting in the remote forest of northern Saskatchewan provides you with an opportunity to really disconnect from the fast pace of life.

Immersed in the wilderness, pine martens, fishers, fox, lynx, all kinds of birds and abundance of squirrels will be part of your entertainment throughout the week. You’ll observe and enjoy deer in their natural habitat just doing what they do. 

Selective harvest

Don’t be surprised if at the moment you least expect it, that special buck appears. We have often been asked, “How will I know if it’s the right one?” Our answer is, “You will know.”  

We work to put you in the right spot for a great hunt. With the help of trail cams and scouting signs, our goal is to set our blinds in places that will give you the best chance. We want to be selective in our harvest so as to let those young bucks mature and produce. 

At the end of the day, not every mature buck is going to be a high scoring animal but if we let our young bucks walk, there’s a chance for that animal to develop into the best he can be.  

Genuine northern bush bucks

Your hunt will primarily happen out of ground blinds of a variety of types that are blended into their surroundings. 

Before we leave you each day, we do our best to make sure you are comfortable and have the things you need to make the day enjoyable. For those cold days, we will provide you with heater bodysuits to make sure you stay warm. 

If you have never hunted genuine northern bush bucks, we would love to show you what it’s all about.

We want to provide an opportunity for you to bring friends or family along. Most of our stands are double-wide so if an observer would like to come along on some of the hunts, space will allow.

The Fine Print

Deposit required.

All of our hunts are booked with a 50% deposit due by Jan. 1 of the hunt year. The balance is to be paid two months prior to the start of the hunt. Hunts are quoted in U.S. funds.

Refund policy

All payments after Jan. 1 are non-refundable. Refunds will only be considered if we are able to refill the spot or if for some reason we are not able to fulfill our hunt commitment to you. If you cancel prior to Jan. 1, your deposit will be refunded less a $100 service fee.

The taxes that are charged on the hunt are 5% GST, which is payable on the total amount, and 6% PST, which is payable on both the lodging and meals portion of the trip. Hunting and fishing licence fees are set by the government and include the taxes.

Wounding policy

Our wounding policy is as follows: We will do everything we can to recover the wounded animal. If we can not make the recovery, the hunt will be limited to one more opportunity on the same site that the animal was wounded on. Please confirm the details of this policy with the lodge.

Fully guided with lodging & meals

The hunts are fully guided and include lodging with bedding, meals, field transportation, field dressing and skinning, etc.

Credit card & Interac at camp

We now have credit card and Interac available for our Canadian transactions that take place in camp.

Hunting contract & liability waiver

All hunters must sign the hunting contract and liability waiver prior to the hunt.

Greg "Hammer" Hamm

Owner / guide.

Greg has been involved in the outfitting industry for the past 20 years. Starting young at the age of 15 as a dishwasher at Scott Lake Lodge and then progressing into a guiding position. He has always had a passion for hunting and fishing as well as guiding and sharing the experiences with others. When the opportunity to purchase his own outfitting company came available in some of the best hunting in the world, Greg jumped on the opportunity. He moved to the camp and lives full time on the edge of the wilderness enjoying spending time in nature. In the off season trapping, ice fishing, and of course feeding whitetails occupy most of his time. He truly cares of the conservation and sustainability of running a successful trophy hunting experience in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Jackie “Jacko” Tourand

Pro guide / pro trapper.

Jackie is truly one of a kind, she grew up in our hunting area and in fact was the daughter of the late Kevin Tourand. Kevin operated Kevin Tourand Outfitting for 25 years and was in the same area and license we operate Bone Quest Outfitters under. So you can say she grew up an outfitter and had many experiences she shared with her extremely knowledgable father. In combination with her knowledge she is also an extremely ambitious and a hardworking person. She goes the extra mile for our customers time and time again. Jackie spends her off season running a trapline in the northern forest of Saskatchewan, in combination with that she's also feeding whitetails, ice fishing and pursuing a license in Massage Therapy. Jackie is a surgeon with a knife and is not afraid to get her hands dirty. An extremely skillful skinner, and caper she receives top dollar for all of her furs.

Paul "Pauliwood" Hamilton

Paul has spent the better part of his life (Some 24 years) guiding hunters and anglers in Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territory’s. When not guiding for Bone Quest Outfitters Paul is guiding anglers for Scott Lake Lodge. He has many bush experiences to share and his skills shine through. You can ask him of his tracking job on a wounded whitetail which went deep into the wilderness and carried on for two days before he caught up to our clients animal. Other experiences include time spent camping in the -50 F temperatures of the Arctic circle researching arctic char. He retired from the Arctic Char job which had him snowmobiling across mile deep oceans and has now lived in White Fox, Saskatchewan for the past 15 years. He has a deep knowledge of our area and brings a great personality as well as much experience to our team.

Timberlost Outfitting offers fully guided Saskatchewan, Canada Trophy Whitetail Deer Hunting. Timberlost Outfitting is a Trophy Hunters paradise due to the good genetics, perfect habitat, strict trophy management and few hunters, offering great opportunities to get a mature deer. Firearm hunts and muzzleloader hunts are offered on a limited basis to maintain a low pressure hunting environment. We only take 50 deer hunters a year on 130,000 acres.

Timberlost has an intensive feeding program; we don’t just feed the deer to get that one big buck, we feed them to keep the whole herd healthy. TLO has around 60 bait stations throughout our whole area and try to keep the stands around 2 kms apart with trail cameras going 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

We have a lot of repeat hunters with us and after discussing with them, we have decided that if a hunter doesn’t squeeze the trigger, Timberlost will give him a $1000 credit to next years hunt. If any mainframe 10 point or more buck is shot that does not gross 150 inches there will be a $1500 fine in order to promote world class bucks.

Best herd management practices, maintaining year round nutrition with various mineral and salt licks, and predator control ensure our trophy whitetail deer develop to their fullest potential.

Whitetail Deer hunts are $6000 US plus tax and licenses    or $7500 CND plus tax and licenses (Tax is $660 USD, License is $480 CND). Cost includes meals, lodging, alcohol, winter package,  trophy prep, pickup and drop off in Saskatoon. The hunts are 5.5 days and we require 2500 for a deposit and the remaining balance to be paid 2 months prior to coming on the hunt if paying with a check.  You can pay final balance with credit card, certified check or cash at camp when you arrive on Sunday.

“This was the second great year in a row and i think I’ll go for a third next year. From the time we landed in Saskatoon and picked up at the airport we were totally looked after, right down to permits, shells and a gun. Using a semi auto of theirs saved us great hassles at the airports and customs. Another bonus was that they took care of cleaning the birds, and when you have shot over one hundred birds that becomes important. The blinds are comfortable, the calling ( Tyler ) was excellent, he can really turn them around. It is a treat to watch. We shot our limit on every shoot. I can’t do that in Ontario. The accommodation is very comfortable. The bedding includes flannel sheets which are very pleasant on a cold night. And the food; Spectacular is all I can say. It is the only hunt camp that I have been to that serves prime rib roast beef and BBQ spare ribs. We were there over Thanksgiving weekend and they provided a complete thanksgiving dinner for us as well. Would I recommend Prairie sky? Hell yes.”

2023 Waterfowl Banding Operations: Saskatchewan

I often get asked why I go back to the same place in Saskatchewan every year to band ducks as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Waterfowl Banding Operations . Most people think that once you’ve seen a place, there is nothing left to see, so why go back? That couldn’t be further from the truth. In my years of coming back to this very same place, no year has been the same. The landscape, wildlife, and people change everything about the experience.

This year our crew consisted of Walt Rhodes, Crew Leader extraordinaire and Pilot Biologist from Bend, Oregon, Christopher Romero, Legal Instrument Examiner from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jennifer Ryan, Biologist with the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program from Hadley, Massachusetts, and myself. We had a great crew! Even though Chris and Jennifer were new, they were willing to work hard, listen, learn, and they were so excited to be a part of this field work. They picked up on everything so quickly it felt like we had been working together for years instead of weeks.

This year was more pleasant compared to 2022. Certain areas that we used previously were dried up, but the areas we hadn’t used in years were full of water. We were not near the Canadian wildfires but were surrounded by a smoky haze the entire time. The haze sat on top of us like a morning fog. We hoped it would leave by mid-morning, but we were not so lucky. Regardless of the conditions, we still had high numbers of ducks and one of my personal best years. We were able to successfully band 5,027 ducks, which was definitely the highest number of ducks I have ever caught since coming up here! Most of the ducks were blue-winged teal followed closely by northern pintails. We also caught the usual suspects including mallards, green-winged teal, and redheads, although their numbers were lower than usual. We even had a few surprise guests such as gadwalls, canvasbacks, American wigeons, lesser scaup, northern shovelers and mallard x black duck hybrids.

I loved stepping out that first morning and listening to the calls of all the different wildlife. I was obviously not the only one who enjoyed those sounds as one of the farmers put a bench right on the lake edge so everyone could sit and listen. We started our day with coffee and some light banter in the truck until we pulled up to that first sight. Once we got our boots on, nothing felt better than standing in a wet marsh covered in muck. After a few days we got into a routine where everyone knew what to bring and when to head down to the site. If we were extra lucky, someone even brought danishes with us (they were delicious).

I always look forward to this detail. I get excited to see how the landscape changed from last year, get to know the new people I will work with, and face new challenges. I love going back and seeing some of the old acquaintances and catching up with these friends.  The same can be said for the new acquaintances that I meet every year and the excitement of what I might learn from them. All these relationships are so beneficial to me and help me grow into a stronger and better person. One would think that by now I am an old pro at this, but as my crew leader liked to say, “The jury is still out deliberating.” Until then, I continue to learn and absorb as much information as I can.
