WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO As the Day Is Long, The Adventures Are Broad

There are adventures to be had every time of year in Northern Europe and Scandinavia. The high season lasts from June to August; all attractions are open during this time, and cities host many festivals. This is the time of year to go to experience the midnight sun in cities like Helsinki and Stockholm.

The shoulder season is in March, April, September and October. You can expect chilly nights and snow in the northern parts of the region. From January to April, when the days are shorter, some attractions close for the season, but this is the best time of year to see the epic, icy landscapes of the region — as well as the best views of the Northern Lights.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

Scandinavian cruises: 2023 guide

Scandinavia has thousands of miles of dramatic and geologically fascinating coastline. It varies from the steep mountainscapes of the fjords to the long sandy beaches of the Danish islands and the pretty villages of the Stockholm archipelago .

Norway's Geirangerfjord is one of Scandinavia's most beautiful and dramatic cruise destinations.

So taking a cruise makes sense and allows you to view the varied coastline and visit places that may takes hours of driving to get to by road.

But what is it really like to take a cruise in Scandinavia? And which are the best routes to follow? Read on to find out all you need to know about Scandinavian cruises.

What is a Scandinavian cruise?

There are many different types of cruise that visit the Scandinavian coast.

They vary from huge luxury liners with loads of leisure activities that are more like giant floating hotels, to smaller cruise boats, where you can attend lectures from wildlife and natures experts on board.

The most popular countries visited are Norway, Sweden and Denmark, while Nordic cruises add on Finland and Iceland. A few cruises include all five countries.

More usual combinations are Norway and Iceland; Denmark and Sweden; Sweden and Finland; or Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states.

Scandinavian cruises tend to sail round Iceland to view the dramatic scenery.

Cruising has a reputation as being for older people, and it is true that in general more cruises are taken by those over 50.

However,  Scandinavian cruises tend to attract a slightly younger demographic and are popular with young honeymooners, families and those people who may not consider a more traditional type of cruise (to somewhere like the Caribbean, for example).

Some ships, such as the Hurtigruten cruises, double as local ferries and are used by residents to get from one town or village along the coast to another without having to drive miles over mountains and around fjords.

Why choose a Scandinavian cruise?

Since many parts of Scandinavia are steep, mountainous, remote and covered in snow and ice for part of the year, they can be difficult to access by car.

To drive from Stockholm to Helsinki for example, is more than 1000 miles by road, even though the two capitals are less than 250 miles apart by sea. By ship, the journey can be done overnight in a comfortable private cabin.

Cruising is also convenient, allowing you to see multiple locations in one trip without having to spend your whole holiday being at the wheel of a car.

And it needn’t necessarily be that expensive. Eating and drinking in Scandinavia is pricey, whereas on an all-inclusive cruise you have unlimited access to as much food and drink as you want!

Downsides to joining a cruise

Of course, cruising isn’t for everyone and there are some downsides:

  • Lack of flexibility. You have to stick to a set itinerary and often don’t have much time in each port. So you can’t just head off to explore somewhere that you see en route.
  • The crowds in port. If you’re on a large ship it can sometimes take a long time to disembark once the ship docks.
  • Extra costs. Some cruises charge extra for internet access or expect large staff tips. Make sure you check exactly what’s included when you book.
  • You may well put on weight! The all-you-can-eat element of a cruise ship buffet makes it hard to resist eating at all hours.

Best time to go on a Scandinavian cruise

Since Scandinavia is in the north, it enjoys long daylight hours in summer, and 24 hours of daylight for much of June once you’re above the Arctic Circle .

Cruising in Scandinavia in in winter means lots of snow and the northern lights

And, of course, the weather is milder with more sunshine in summer, though there’s often just as much rainfall in the summer months as in winter.

The main reason to choose a winter cruise is to see stunning snowy scenery and the northern lights. The spectacular Aurora Borealis can be seen in northern Scandinavia on a clear night from around October to March.

And indeed some cruise companies, including the Hurtigruten cruise line , are so confident that you’ll see the lights during a winter cruise that if there are no sightings, they’ll give you another trip for free.

For more on the best times to view the lights, check out out guide to seeing the northern lights in Scandinavia .

Top Scandinavian cruise lines

There are plenty of cruise lines that specialise in Scandinavian cruises, plus some international cruise lines that include Scandinavia on their itineraries

Hurtigruten

The original Norwegian fjord supply ships, Hurtigruten cruises run the length of Norway from Bergen up to Kirkenes every day, stopping in at major ports and tiny villages.

Traditionally a lifeline for communities that had no road access, the ships now also have comfortable cabins, some with balconies and hot tubs.

The full route takes seven days, and it’s possible to book just one or two legs of the journey.

Hurtigruten cruises often have expert lecturers on board to talk about the wildlife, culture and geology of the landscape, and they also run full-scale expeditions to far-flung destinations, including the Arctic, the Antarctic and the Galapagos islands.

For more on the Hurtigruten, check out All you need to know about Hurtigruten cruises .

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises have good choice of routes round Scandinavia – we like the look of this mega 29-day cruise from New York via Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard and along the Norwegian fjords to Bergen.

Viking also has a 29-day cruise from London via Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Denmark, Berlin in Germany, Gdansk in Poland and ending up in Stockholm in Sweden.

Tallink Silja

Tallink Silja runs mini-cruises across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm to Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga.

The Stockholm to Helsinki mini cruise includes two nights in a sea-view cabin, two breakfasts and gives you a day in Helsinki to explore.

For more on the Stockholm to Helsinki route, read our guide .

Norwegian-owned but based in the UK, Fred Olsen Line has four ships, all small enough to enter the Norwegian fjords but with the facilities and luxury of a larger ship.

We like its Summertime in Lapland and Scandinavia cruise, which leaves from Newcastle, stops in Aarhus in Denmark, then has a few stops in Sweden including Stockholm and a few stops in Finland, including Lapland and Turku.

Royal Caribbean

One of the largest cruise companies, Royal Caribbean runs a few cruises in Scandinavia including a 9-night Norwegian fjord cruise that starts in Copenhagen and ends in Amsterdam, taking in Oslo and the fjords en route.

Popular Scandinavian cruise routes

If you’re after a classic Norwegian Fjords’ cruise, we recommend the Hurtigruten from Bergen up to Kirkenes close to the Russian border, and back.

The full return journey takes twelve days and stops in at the Geirangerfjord , Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø, the Lofoten Islands , Tromsø, the North Cape and Kirkenes – amongst others!

Ålesund in Norway is a popular stop on a Scandinavian cruise

For those who want the ultimate Baltic Sea cruise, we like this 28-day cruise on the Princess Line , which starts in Scotland, sails round the Shetland Islands, Iceland, along the Norwegian coast, and takes in Copenhagen in Denmark, Stockholm and Gotland in Sweden, Tallinn, Riga and Lithuania in the Baltics, plus Gdansk in Poland.

Many Baltic cruises used to include St Petersburg in Russia on their itineraries, but these have been amended or cancelled due to the war in Ukraine.

Arctic Circle cruises are also popular, particularly in summer when you can take full advantage of the midnight sun. We think this 12-day cruise from Scotland that sails along the Norwegian Coast to the North Cape, then over to Svalbard, is a good option.

Must-visit destinations on a Scandinavian cruise

Of course, the Norwegian fjords are a highlight of any Scandinavian cruise (see our guide to the 16 best fjords ).

We reckon the beautiful Geirangerfjord and the dramatic Lofoten Islands are not be missed for their stunning natural beauty, along with the interesting cities of Oslo and Bergen .

The Geirangerfjord in Norway is a popular cruise destination.

Icelandic cruises tend to sail round the whole island taking in the breath-taking scenery and stopping in at lively Reykjavik .

In Denmark, Copenhagen and the pretty island of Bornholm are regular cruise stops, while in Sweden Stockholm and its archipelago are must-see destinations on any cruise itinerary.

In Finland, Helsinki and Turku are both interesting places to stop at, to get a good idea of the country and its culture.

Cruises worth checking out in 2023 and 2024

2023 is the 130th anniversary of the first Hurtigruten ship, so you can get discounts of up fifty percent off the classic Norwegian coastal voyage this year .

Svalbard is a great place for an adventure cruise

We also really like this cruise round Iceland , which includes whale-watching, geysers and the fjords on the remote eastern side of the island.

For those who want to see as much as possible in a short amount, we suggest this 14-day cruise from Southampton that takes in four European capitals, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn, as well as Kiel in Germany.

But, if you think cruising isn’t really for you and want something different, we reckon this six-day Arctic Adventure round the remote island of Svalbard is a great choice.

It takes in the world’s northernmost capital Longyearbyen and explores glaciers, Arctic fjords and mountains, while looking out for walruses, whales and polar bears.

What to pack for a Scandinavian cruise

What you pack depends on the type of cruise you’re going on. If you’ve chosen a large ship with lots of leisure activities and nightlife, you’ll want evening clothes, gym gear and some smart formal wear.

If you’re on an adventure cruise, you may need hiking or climbing gear, waterproofs and walking boots.

But whatever type of cruise you’ve chosen, here’s a basic packing list of essentials.

  • Waterproof and windproof jacket. Whatever time of year you’re travelling, there’s a good chance of rain in Scandinavia, and the wind can be strong!
  • Layers. Even in summer, it can get cold in the evenings so brings lots of layers that you can take on and off.
  • Binoculars. Wildlife spotting is a big part of many Scandinavian cruises, so binoculars are useful.
  • Sunscreen and sun hat.
  • Sturdy shoes. Even if you’re not going hiking, walking round around cities can be hard on the feet, so make sure you have comfortable shoes or boots.
  • Swimming costume. Many ships have pools and even the smaller ones may have a hot tub on deck to dip in.
  • Camera or phone. You won’t want to miss all that stunning scenery!

Experiencing Scandinavian culture on a cruise

Experiencing the culture can be an integral part of any trip, and many cruises put on lectures about local culture and traditions, workshops on local arts and handicrafts, cooking demonstrations of local dishes and shows of local music or bands.

The Silja Line runs between Stockholm and Helsinki.

Often experts in their field give talks on subjects such as star-gazing, geology, wildlife and the culture of the countries you’re visiting.

Some ships, such as the Hurtigruten, pride themselves on serving traditional dishes made from locally sourced seasonal products that are picked up from ports on the way in their restaurants.

Optional shore excursions also often include cultural immersion opportunities, such as this trip to a sheiling , or traditional farm, where you’ll learn all about life on a rural smallholding in the Norwegian mountains.

We also like this visit to a traditional turf farm in Iceland to learn about life in rural Iceland and how to churn butter!

Essential tips for Scandinavian cruises

  • Do your research beforehand. Some of the larger cruise ships are too big to enter the fjords, so choose a smaller boat if you want to go into the fjords, and a larger one if you want lots of facilities and activities.
  • Pick a cabin with a window. Yes, we know they cost more than inside cabins, but we think it’s worth it so you don’t miss any of that beautiful scenery from your room.
  • Don’t expect to see everything. Sometimes the choice of shore trips can be overwhelming, so pick the ones which you really want to do.
  • Make the most of the free activities. Some ships put on loads of activities, so why not use the sea days to learn the ukulele or try your hand at salsa dancing or crochet?
  • Buy travel insurance. Cruises can be expensive so make sure you’re properly insured in case anything goes wrong. We like World Nomads: see below for an instant quote.
  • Most important of all – relax and enjoy the scenery. Make the most of the fact that some of the world’s most dramatic sea- and mountainscapes are sailing past your window!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORDIC CRUISES

Just in case you want to learn more about cruise packages or Nordic Visitor destinations, we’ve collected the most requested queries and answered them here. If you want details on our company and booking processes, then check out our general FAQs or booking information page .

1. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE POPULAR?

Northern Europe is a popular holiday destination for so many reasons! It is a region brimming with gorgeous scenery and vibrant cultures, with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of tours and activities.

From the fjords of Norway to the ice fields of Greenland, and from the world-class museums of Scandinavia to the Celtic heritage of Scotland, there is simply so much to uncover in Northern Europe. Best of all, you can visit the region year-round, with each season offering its own appeal.

Northern Europe is so diverse yet it is very easy to travel around, so you can see more than one country in the same trip. Flight times between destinations are short, although you can also journey by road, rail or cruise for scenic views along the way.

What’s more, the Nordic countries – that’s Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – regularly rank in the top 10 safest places in the world to visit. This is partly because they generally have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety, among other reasons.

Another plus is that most people in the Nordics speak English, which means you can easily interact with the locals if you are an English speaker yourself. In Scotland and Ireland, English is the main language.

2. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE GREAT TO VISIT ON A CRUISE?

You can easily travel around Northern Europe by cruise as there are fast, reliable and efficient links within the region. For example, Scandinavian cruise tours are very popular as they offer you the chance to visit a number of destinations across the Baltic and North Seas.

Cruising in Norway is a great option as you can visit various fjords and explore the country’s coastal landscapes. It’s also a fantastic way to discover the Arctic region, travelling aboard the reputable Hurtigruten cruise vessel.

In Greenland, cruising is the best way to reach remote corners of the country as they cannot be accessed by road. For a real adventure, spend a few days aboard a cruise to marvel at the Ilulissat Icefjord, whale watch in Sisimiut, and see mountains towering above the sea at Maniitsoq.

3. WHAT ARE THE TOP SIGHTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE?

Some of the top sights in Northern Europe include glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland, and fjords, mountains and valleys in Norway. Sweden flaunts lushly forested islands and countryside, while Scotland and Ireland are blessed with dramatic national parks and coastlines.

Find out the best places to visit in Northern Europe with our insider guides:

  • The best places to visit in Scandinavia
  • The best things to see and do in Norway
  • The best places to visit in Iceland
  • The best places to visit in Scotland
  • The best places to visit in Ireland

4. WHAT IS THE BEST NORDIC CRUISE?

There are so many Nordic cruises to choose from, so finding the best one depends on what you want to do and how much time you have.

On Scandinavian cruise tours , you can visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same trip. You could spend a week visiting the three Scandinavian countries, or stay for longer to explore the region at leisure and even incorporate other destinations into your tour.

A Baltic cruise is a great option if you want to experience a mix of Northern European cities and cultures.

Take your pick from various Baltic Sea cruise ports to stop off at. You might like to begin in Helsinki, Finland. You can then hop over to Tallinn, Estonia before sailing to Stockholm, Sweden. You may also wish to consider St Petersburg, Russia, as a port of call.

Alternatively, you could focus on exploring Norway by cruise . The west coast is 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) long, so there is plenty to discover! A Havila or Hurtigruten cruise will take you to glittering fjords and picturesque shorelines, ranging from 2 to 7 days at sea with shore excursions along the way.

How about an adventure to the far north? If you love immersing yourself in wild, remote landscapes, then opt for a Greenland cruise . Greenland is one of the last unexplored frontiers in the world, with its icy tundras, vast glaciers and Arctic wildlife.

Your voyage could whisk you to the hard-to-reach corners of Greenland. Cruise along glacier lagoons to see icebergs calving into the water, spot whales in the sea, and admire mountainous scenery from the water.

5. WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR?

On a self-guided tour, you travel independently without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone, though, as your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant has arranged everything before your arrival. They provide you with a personalised itinerary complete with tickets, bookings and recommendations.

We have a 24/7 emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

6. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY’S FJORDS?

Each travel season offers different reasons to visit the Norwegian fjords, so there is no “bad time” to go! However we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway at different times of the year, so that you can decide when is best for your trip.

Visit Norway’s fjords in the spring and summer (May to August) for long daylight hours and warmer weather. This is the ideal time to see the fjords surrounded with greenery and to join bird watching or kayaking excursions. You could also experience the midnight sun at the height of summer.

Alternatively, chasing the northern lights in Norway might be on your wish list. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

In which case, we recommend visiting in the autumn and winter, between September and March. You’ll need the right conditions to catch sight of them, such as solar activity, dark skies, and low light pollution. Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Norway on our blog.

Whether you see the northern lights or not, cruising the Norwegian fjords in winter is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. The shoulder season (autumn and early spring) is also a good time to go as top attractions are quieter, with fewer visitors compared to the summer.

Whichever time of year you prefer to travel, we have reliable departure dates and there are cruise tours available year-round. You can find out more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

7. DO I NEED A VISA FOR A BALTIC CRUISE?

Whether you need a visa or not will depend on where you are travelling from. For example, you do not need a visa for a Baltic cruise if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom or USA. For all other nationalities, we recommend getting in touch with your local consulate to check.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can visit St Petersburg without a visa for up to 72 hours if you book a package cruise tour. Usually British and American citizens require a visa for Russia, but booking a Baltic cruise is one of the few exceptions.

8. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

In most cases, yes, you can view and select Nordic Visitor arrival dates online. You can always add extra days to your itinerary before or after the cruise.

9. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend all Nordic Visitor packages with extra days. Every tour can be customised by adding days to the beginning or end of your trip. You can also add extra days within your itinerary if you are travelling on a self-drive or private tour .

For cruises there are fixed departure dates as the vessel must adhere to an itinerary. But of course you can add days before or after your cruise experience. The same applies to small group tours .

10. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We recommend you look over flights for timings and prices, but hold off purchasing until your package has been secured. Once your dedicated travel consultant has introduced themselves and sent over the confirmation email, you will have all of the information you need to pick and purchase flights.

11. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

You should always bring sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Northern Europe. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Warm socks (especially for winter travel)
  • Sunscreen (for summer trips)

An umbrella will also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to get a closer look at the fjords and local wildlife.

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your trip, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .

Whether you want to book a cruise or ask about updating a package with extra days and nights, get in touch with our travel consultants.

A rich culture

From Bergen to Helsinki; from London to Belfast; from Glasgow to Copenhagen via Dublin, Liverpool or Amsterdam, the former Hanseatic towns are capitals of culture. Their historic centres reflect historical pasts and vibrant daily life. With keystone museums, art galleries, historic buildings, futuristic architecture, bustling streets, and peaceful canals, the big iconic cities in Northern Europe and Scandinavia have plenty of secrets up their sleeve.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Breathtaking landscapes

Sail to the heart of the Norwegian fjords , surrounded by mountains and waterfalls plunging into deep-blue water, to see spectacular glaciers . Travel along green coastlines , approach the mysterious basalt columns at Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, hike through the plains and heaths buffeted by fresh winds, see amazing flora, marvel at Connemara's lakes , visit deserted beaches ... Every day is a chance to take in stunning new panoramas.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Legendary or little-known islands

Let your imagination run wild when you see ancient castle ruins on the Isles of Scilly , puffin colonies on Heimaey Island , impressive viewpoints on the Isle of Wight and Skye , or motorbike races on the Isle of Man... Every destination has unique features that set it apart.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Go kayaking in Nordfjord - Norway

The deep blue water gently reflects the surrounding landscape. Carved out by glaciers, Nordfjord is considered one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway. Paddling in a kayak along the fjord's banks , you will be amazed by nature's grandeur, steep-cliffed mountains, spectacular waterfalls , and gigantic glaciers . Enjoy being in complete harmony with the natural world.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Explore the Dutch countryside and Amsterdam's canals - the Netherlands

Experience the authentic Netherlands with a visit to the traditional village of Broek in Waterland , known for its wooden houses and traditional farms, then to the Beemster Polder , a UNESCO World Heritage site. Complete this panoramic tour with a trip to a 17th-century windmill . A cruise on Amsterdam's canals is the best way to see most of the city's points of interest, like the old merchant houses, churches and 16th- and 17th-century warehouses.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Treat yourself to a cruise in Copenhagen - Denmark

Like Amsterdam, Copenhagen is best seen from the water. A cruise on the city's canals takes you to the key places in the Danish capital : the colourful houses along Nyhavn Canal, the legendary Little Mermaid statue, the opera, Amalienborg Palace, the royal library, the stock exchange, and the Church of Our Saviour.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Visit the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

It's impossible to go to Saint Petersburg without getting engrossed in the treasures held at the Hermitage Museum . One of the biggest in the world, it covers 50,000 square metres and contains over 3 million works! The 374 museum galleries showcase sculptures and paintings from master artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Veronese, Rembrandt, Poussin, Delacroix, Matisse, Renoir and Degas, plus pieces from classical and oriental antiquity and from the former USSR.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Access Dunottar Castle perched on a headland in Scotland - United Kingdom

Dunottar brings to life any ideas we might have about Scotland's iconic landscapes and its ruined castles which remain just as splendid as ever. This castle proudly dominates the headland , standing 50 metres above the North Sea. Although its strategic location meant it played a key role in Scotland's history, now it's the site's beauty that attracts attention from international visitors.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Travel back in time in the heart of the Connemara region - Ireland

Verdant hills, dark lakes, moors in an endless palette of greens and browns, impressive castles... Ireland's Connemara region offers visitors the chance to explore incredible sites with all the poetry of Mother Nature. Crossing through County Galway and visiting stunning Kylemore Abbey, the peaceful town of Clifden, Ashford Castle, and the spectacular landscape at Lough Corrib will leave you with unforgettable memories.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Walk around Riga - Latvia

Riga is best explored on foot and by boat . A canal cruise on board a pretty little boat gives visitors the chance to enjoy the city's gentle feel and beautiful landmarks like the Latvian National Theatre. On foot , the national opera, academy of music, central station and Brivibas iela — the city's main shopping street — are worth a visit. The old centre with its magnificent houses reflecting the city's prosperous past as part of the Hanseatic League, and the superb Riga Cathedral , famous for its huge 6,700-pipe organ, are also must-sees.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Immerse yourself in folklore in Tallinn - Estonia

Tallin’s centre was fortunately spared during the intensive bombing by the Soviet army during World War II. The city became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Touring the old town, you can immerse yourself in the ambiance of the medieval area with its ramparts and watchtowers. The gothic cathedral, the castle that is now home to the Estonian parliament, the Russian Orthodox church and the paved alleyways all give the city undeniable charm. Topped off with a folk performance and a walk down St Catherine's Passage, lined with local craftsmen's workshops, you will end up knowing all of Tallinn's secrets.

scandinavia cruises 2023

Visit a whisky distillery - Ireland

Unique in Ireland and Great Britain, the old but still-operating Jameson Distillery produces high-quality whisky near Cork. On a guided tour, you can enjoy the stunning and perfectly restored 18th-century industrial buildings, the operational waterwheel and the world's biggest copper still...with capacity for 145,500 litres! Then, it's time for a relaxed tasting session in an Irish pub.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Saga cruises sails back into the black as passenger numbers soar

S aga cheered an ‘outstanding’ year for its cruise business – but still racked up a £129million loss as troubles at its insurance arm took their toll.

The company, which specialises in insurance and holidays for over-50s, sailed back into the black at its ocean cruise business where profits came in at £36million for 2023, up from the £700,000 loss the year before.

Its river cruise arm unveiled annual profits of £3million, from a £5million loss in 2022.

Saga’s travel business, which includes both the Saga Holidays and Titan brands, saw passenger numbers surge from 47,000 in 2022 to 57,800 last year.

‘Ocean Cruise had an outstanding year and, as a result, we far exceeded our initial earnings targets, while River Cruise and Travel both returned to profit for the first time since the pandemic,’ said chief executive Mike Hazell, the company’s former chief financial officer who took over from Euan Sutherland in November.

He added: ‘Forward bookings are strong, with all three businesses significantly ahead of the same point in the prior year.’

In 2023, tours around the fjords and Scandinavia were a particular sweet spot, while cruises to Greenland were increasingly popular.

But despite bumper demand for cruises and getaways, Saga still clocked up losses of £129million as its insurance arm continues to feel the sting of high inflation, driving up the price of payouts.

Motor insurers are being significantly affected by surging claims due to more expensive repair and labour costs and semiconductor shortages pushing up second-hand car prices.

In addition, they are banned from ‘price walking’ – giving cheaper premiums to new customers while making loyal customers pay more for renewals.

Saga was reportedly in talks to sell its underwriting business last year to Open, an Australian insurer, but failed to get a deal over the line.

But the company recently said that it was ‘exploring opportunities’ as it tries to drive down its debt, which currently stands at £637million.

Last year it tapped chairman Roger De Haan for £35million, adding to the pile of cash it owes him. It said it was looking at a partnership, with an outside firm taking over the running of its cruise operations.

Its two flagship vessels, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, run cruises across the British Isles, the Mediterranean, the Nordics and the Caribbean, with prices ranging from £1,300 to £15,000.

Analysts at Peel Hunt said ‘further strategic action is needed’ to get the company on a ‘firmer financial footing’.

Steel Yourself for Saturday’s Jupiter-Uranus Conjunction

Portrait of Aliza Kelly

Yes, the eclipses are over and we’re almost on the other side of this latest Mercury retrograde — but did you really think we were done with major, cataclysmic, life-changing astrology? Well, think again. One of 2024’s most significant astrological events is taking place on Saturday, April 20, at exactly 10:27 p.m. ET: Jupiter and Uranus will align in Taurus for the first time since 1941. Is it a big deal? Yep!

Read on to find out what this Jupiter-Uranus conjunction means for you.

Tell me about Jupiter in astrology.

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and, symbolically, this celestial body reveals that size does matter. Named after the Roman god of the sky (also known as Zeus in Greek mythology), Jupiter is all about expansion. Jupiter is associated with luck, fortune, and bountiful opportunities — in fact, Jupiter’s auspicious tidings earned it the title of “Great Benefic.”

But too much of a good thing is still … too much. And since Jupiter is the planet of expansion, it’s known to amplify anything it touches. Excesses, indulgences, and extremism are also associated with Jupiter. This is especially important as it relates to its upcoming connection with Uranus.

Okay, and what’s up with Uranus in astrology?

Even by outer-space standards, Uranus is a bit of an oddball. The only planet named after a Greek deity, Uranus is tilted so far on its axis — a whopping 97.7-degree tilt — that it practically orbits on its side. And, because “there are no coincidences ,” this perfectly mirrors Uranus’ symbolism: Uranus is the planet of innovation, revolution, and eccentricity.

Named after the lightning god himself, Uranus is all about shock and awe, so this planet is distinctly erratic and unpredictable. And there’s nothing Uranus loves more than to break the rules, to challenge the powers that be and disrupt the status quo. So we should always expect the unexpected when it comes to Uranus.

And that’s exactly what makes this upcoming Jupiter-Uranus conjunction so noteworthy …

So what’s the deal with this Jupiter-Uranus conjunction?

Conjunctions occur when planets meet, from our view here on Earth, in the same exact point in the sky. This aspect blends the energy of the two planets, creating a dynamic fusion that transforms into a single energetic expression. And, since Jupiter’s keyword is “more” and Uranus’ is “revolution,” we can infer what this cosmic coupling implies: more revolution.

While Jupiter and Uranus connect every 14 years (the last instances were June 8, 2010; September 18, 2010; and January 4, 2011), they haven’t aligned in the sign of Taurus since the early 1940s. Taurus, the first earth sign of the zodiac, is associated with materiality, resources, and the physical world. All terrestrial and corporeal matters — food, finances, the environment, and the body itself — fall under its domain. Sturdy and stable, Taurus is anchored by things that are real, tangible, and rooted in reality.

Uranus first entered Taurus in 2018, which has so far been an interesting pairing (to say the least). While Uranus is progressive and offbeat, Taurus tends toward traditionalism and conservatism, so the combination has been — broadly speaking — challenging our perception of stability. Since Uranus entered this sign, we’ve experienced the wax and wane of cryptocurrency, alarming climate crises, and — who could forget! — a global pandemic. Just to name a few.

It’s safe to say that our foundation has definitely been rocked since Uranus entered this sign.

Moving on, Jupiter joined Taurus’ sky more recently, first entering Taurus’ domain on May 16, 2023. But now, with Jupiter connecting to Uranus for the first time in 14 years, we can expect Uranian themes to be amplified.

So what should we expect? As Taurus is associated with the physical earth, it’s possible that we can anticipate shifts in boundaries or borders. Or perhaps the conjunction will catalyze major changes in financial disruption: perhaps true student-loan forgiveness? Or regulations on college tuition? Or properly taxing the rapidly increasing billionaire class? A girl can dream!

On a personal level, consider how the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction can catalyze your own personal revolution. Since Taurus is associated with values, consider how yours are transforming. Maybe your priorities are going through their own metamorphosis? Perhaps your relationship with money, or beauty, or your body is changing? If you’ve been shackled by oppressive societal norms or harmful, outdated narratives, this is a beautiful opportunity to resist conformity and celebrate your individuality. Finally dye your hair a color not found in nature! Tell your partner you’re interested in ethical non-monogamy! But maybe don’t invest all your hard-earned money on that MLM your friend from high school just DM’d you about! Onward!

This post has been updated to reflect that the conjunction takes place on Saturday, April 20.
