Essential Tips To Know Before Travelling To Singapore

Singapore at a glance, top reasons to visit singapore, best time to visit singapore, top things to do in singapore, shopping in singapore, things to remember when shopping in singapore, foods to try out in singapore, art and culture in singapore.

The island of Singapore was originally inhabited by pirates and fishermen. The Japanese Empire invaded and occupied Singapore during the Second World War from 1942 to 1945. Once the Japanese forces surrendered, British control was established yet again, which led to the merger between Singapore and the Federation of Malaya, thereby causing Malaysia to form in 1963.

Singapore, however, was expelled from Malaysia due to the racial tensions, social unrest, and political problems that took place between Malaysia’s Alliance Party and the People’s Action Party (PAP) of Singapore. Hence, it led to the creation of Singapore as an independent republic in August of 1965.

Whether you dine at a Michelin-star restaurant or a street-side stall, chances are your tastebuds will be extremely pleased with the choices.

The food found in Singapore is as diverse as its population, containing Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, Malay, and Western influences. There is a lot of Indian cuisine and influences from Indian cuisine that is present in Singaporean dishes, with Tamil cuisine being quite prevalent in the country. While you’re in the country, don’t forget to visit the hawker centers that will automatically lure you in with the splendid aroma. Let us provide you with some suggestions of the foods you must try out in Singapore:

Hainanese Chicken Rice

The Hainanese Chicken Rice is unofficially the national dish of Singapore. Easily found everywhere, right from restaurants to hawker centers, the dish was adapted from the early Chinese immigrants who inhabited Hainan Island. It’s a dish that is said to be eaten “everywhere, every day” in Singapore.

The dish consists of slices of steamed chicken served with aromatic rice which is cooked in chicken stock and is served along with chili sauce and sliced cucumber. The spices and sauces added to the dish enhance its unique taste.

Char Kway Teow

Char Kway Teow literally translates into ‘stir-fried rice noodles’ and is among those staple items at the hawker centers of Singapore that get sold out in seconds. For this dish, flat rice noodles are stir-fried over high heat with a mix of bean sprouts, blood cockles, sweet dark soy sauce, shives, and Chinese sausage slices.

Lard or pork fat usually forms the heart of Char Kway Teow, but it is often replaced with oil as a healthier alternative, with more vegetables taking the place of proteins. You can usually find it being served on a banana leaf to enhance its appearance.

Although Laksa comes from Malaysia, it is very commonly seen in other Southeast Asian counties as well, such as Singapore and Indonesia. Consisting of flat noodles, cockles, prawns, fish cakes, and coconut soup, Laksa is often eaten along with Otah, which is a fish cake wrapped in leaf parcels.

The spicy noodle soup has a bold red hue and is filled with aromatic herbs. This traditional Peranakan dish is a combination of Chinese and Malay cuisine and is of two types, namely Curry Laksa and Asam Laksa. While Asam Laksa is more common in Malaysia, Curry Laksa is the more popular variant in Singapore.

Fish Head Curry

If you belong to the southern region of India, you have probably had fish head curry several times, and you get to taste the Singaporean version of this dish on your holiday.

As the name states, the dish consists of the head of a fish, which is firstly marinated and cooked in curry sauce and then mixed with various vegetables such as okras and eggplants. It is usually served with bread or rice, along with a glass of local lime juice or calamansi. The dish is extremely flavorful owing to the many spices that go into it, and it possesses a tangy flavor.

Ranked by CNN on the 35th position in the list of the best 50 foods of the world, Singapore’s chili crab is a semi-fried dish made with hard-shell crabs that are cooked in a semi-thick gravy created using a base of tomatoes and chilis.

Once the steamed crabs are partially cracked, they are then stir-fried lightly in a paste which consists of eggs, ketchup, and chili sauce. The dish is usually served with mini mantou buns, and despite having the word ‘chili’ in its name, the dish isn’t too spicy and instead has a tangy, rich, and sweet taste, which is delightfully addictive.

In case you find yourself in Singapore for a couple of days, there are high chances that Kaya Toast will make an appearance on your breakfast table perhaps more than once. Kaya is coconut jam made with sugar, eggs, and coconut milk. Kaya Toast is basically two slices of toast served with kaya and butter and is usually served alongside soft-boiled eggs and coffee.

Best Singapore Package for Family

This beloved Singaporean breakfast food is often served as different variations of itself, such as with brown bread or round buns. Kaya Toast has brown and green variations. The brown one is created using caramelized brown sugar, and the green one is made up of pandan leaves.

Nasi Biryani

Biryani is a dish that is commonly found in various parts of South Asian countries. India, for instance, has a wide variety of biryani available throughout its many states.

The Nasi Biryani found in Singapore will be right up your alley if you’re a biryani lover. It is said that biryani may have originated from the southern part of India, and this dish is made up of basmati rice that is cooked using yogurt, garlic, onions, exotic Indian spices, and aromatic herbs. Toppings of cashews and fried onions can often be found in biryani.

Although the inception of satay can be traced back to Indonesia, it is a popular presence in the hawker centers and restaurants of Singapore. This local delicacy is candied and skewered and is available in the meat of your choice, be it chicken, beef, pork, or mutton. After being marinated with turmeric, the meat is then barbecued and served along with rice dumplings, onions, and peanut sauce. Street food carts often have these in plenty, but make sure to grab yours quickly, as they do sell out fast.

Oyster Omelette

Oyster omelette or orh luak has a Min Nan origin, where an egg omelet is mixed with flour and then fried with small oysters. It is garnished with crispy bean sprouts, coriander leaves, and a sauce that is both sweet and spicy. The omelet can either be made crispy or soft, as per your preference. Owing to the high-calorie count, this dish is consumed occasionally but is a must-have when you’re visiting Singapore.

Roti prata, which is a South Indian flatbread, also goes by the name of the ‘Asian croissant’ and is found in many countries in Southeast Asia. It’s made after stretching the wheat flour into a thin, layered, and large flatbread, after which it’s cooked on the pan for about three to five minutes. This crispy, crunchy, and soft concoction can be eaten with a vegetable curry or a meat-based curry, such as chicken, beef, or fish.

Having originated in Malaysia, Nasi Lemak has made a staple place for itself in Singapore’s cuisine. Made up of coconut rice, anchovies, a cucumber slice, a slice of omelet, and a bit of chili paste, the concoction is either packed in a banana leaf or brown paper. A common dish at restaurants and hawker centers, this is most commonly consumed during breakfast. Certain eateries also present Nasi Lemak along with Redang curries.

Hokkien Mee

Hokkien mee literally means ‘Fujian noodles’ as it originated in the Fujian province of southern China during World War II, and eventually became a part of the cuisine of Singapore. It’s a dish that’s always in demand at the hawker stalls around the country. Comprising of rice noodles and yellow egg noodles that are stir-fried with fragrant prawn stock, the toppings of this beloved dish include tender slices of pork belly, bean sprouts, fishcake, and prawns.

Since Singapore has a significant percentage of Southern Chinese immigrants, Chinese Buddhism is the most prevalent religion in the island country. As there are many South Indian individuals who reside in the country as well, Hinduism is another religion that’s quite commonly practiced. Islam, Christianity, and Taoism are the other religions followed in Singapore.

The country of Singapore has four official languages, namely English, Tamil, Malay, and Mandarin. The language that is most commonly spoken in the country is English, as it was once a Crown colony of the United Kingdom. Hence, English is the language used in Singapore’s trade and commerce, judicial system, and public service and administration. Singaporean English is what is mainly spoken in the country today, locally known as Singlish.

Folk dance and music

The diversity of Singapore’s culture is very well reflected in the dance forms present in the country, comprising of both traditional and contemporary dances. The multicultural status of the country is evident from the presence of numerous communities in Singapore, such as India, Indonesians, and Malay, with the Chinese being the majority. The traditional dance form known as lion dance often makes an appearance in numerous festivals, such as the New Year, and there is also Zapin, which is the Malay National Dance. If you enjoy ballet and opera, then Singapore will provide you with one of the best musical experiences due to the presence of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Arts and crafts

The artistic side of Singapore is strongly celebrated through the musical orchestras, art galleries, and museums present in the country. National Gallery Singapore, for example, has the largest public display of modern Southeast Asian art in the world. There is the Singapore Art Museum with its focus on contemporary art, and the Red Dot Design Museum, which features more than 500 award-winning design works.

Numerous festivals take place throughout the year in Singapore since the country is a potpourri of various cultures. Some of the most popular festivals include Vesak Day, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Haji, Good Friday, Deepavali, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Hari Raya Puasa.

Singapore Geography:

Singapore is a beautiful sovereign island city-state, one among the few such remaining in the world. It is the second smallest in Asia however, courtesy its efficient and fast-paced progress it has quickly become a global economic stalwart.

The country is laden with ample of sightseeing and culinary offerings that travellers can choose from. In addition, Singapore also offers a great deal of luxury for those seeking a premium experience while on leisure or business travel, and some great avenues to always keep travellers busy with shopping.

Singapore is located much closer to the north of the equator, by 1 degree, which amounts to around 137 kilometres. Although it derives perception among travellers of being a small island state, it is, in fact, an amalgamation of 63 islands i.e. one main island surrounded by 62 other small islets.

Courtesy its tropical climate, the temperatures remain quite stable throughout the year with consistently distributed rainfall. The weather keeps the place welcoming enough all-round the year for business and leisure travellers alike.

Singapore has been given many names one of which is that of the ‘Garden City’ – due to its green policy to cover the area with lush gardens, serene parks, and tropical flora & fauna. Although Singapore may appear as a hub of tall standing commercial and residential hubs, the country is making relentless efforts towards striking the right balance between its socio, economic and environmental sustainability.

There is a lot to find here whether it’s about walking through forest trails, wooden bridges in the jungles, sighting plenty of diverse wildlife and much more.  Thanks to this flora and fauna, ‘Singapore’s Botanical Gardens’ is marked as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It comprises a seamless blend of varied cultures viz. English, Chinese, Indian, Malay and Arabic

Singapore  History:

A traveller is bound to be swayed by the historical riches of Singapore, in every aspect of its antique structures, and traditional values, that have endured extensive social and geographical changes. A highly civilised nation, Singapore offers that perfect blend of both eastern and western worlds.

Singapore’s growth as a nation over the past few years has only been exemplary to many other developing nations. Today it is marked as a global hub whether it is for commerce, finance, or transportation.

Furthermore, it has been globally recognised for its innovation, competitive stature,  foreign exchange  market, education, healthcare, oil refining & trading and much more. While such progress would sound amazingly overwhelming for a non-Singaporean, it certainly is not the case for this country, which thrives on relentless innovation and development.

A trip to the Colonial District, the core of the Singapore downtown is something worth cherishing. There are flocks of spice stores in Little India calling out to every passer-by with their aroma. The Arab stores, although tiny, selling some fine silk, and possibilities are to stumble upon some calligraphers and fortune tellers that will make one’s day.

Singapore has everything to offer, whether it’s music, festivals, nightlife, theatres or culinary. Whether the purpose is business or a family vacation, Singapore offers an array of activities that every traveller would cherish for a lifetime.

Singapore is a safe country, with strikingly hygienic and smoke-free public spots. It is the most wired nation in Asia.  The public transportation is so well organised that one does not need to take a personal vehicle out to commute. While one way to explore the city is to simply walk down places, there are tour buses and metro trains – MRT – that are well connected.

Standard of living is considerably high in Singapore, with a high average per capita income.

The idea of the multi-religious and multi-racial approach is deeply rooted in the soils of Singapore. The city has beautifully blended the cultures of English, Chinese, Indian, Malay and Arabic into a single culture of joy and festivity.

What People are Saying

First slide

My holidays were not good...they were the BEST ! Thanks to the Team of Thomas Cook
We, a group of six girls contacted Thomas Cook for a luxury trip of Singapore keeping our privacy and safety in mind. Their team valued our requests and provided an amazing property at Little India. Our trip included a morning cycle rikshaw tour of Arab Street. We were provided our own minibus with a very experienced driver Mr. Venkat for the city tour of Singapore.
We didn’t know how beautiful Singapore is until we saw Thomas Cook’s itinerary. Their various packages include Thailand and Malaysia with Singapore so we were able to modify our itinerary as per our convenience. We loved our visit to Garden’s by the Bay and the luxury dinner at Marina Bay Sands. We couldn’t ask for more. This was an amazing trip, perfect for two souls to become one.
We were 3 couples travelling together and each of us had certain specific demands. Our assistant Manish, arranged a way to accommodate the best of these experiences. We spent two days individually walking sightseeing in Singapore, enjoying rides and witnessing the underwater life at S.E.A. Aquarium. Singapore trip was perfect blend of luxury and adventure and it was perfect according to our requirements and budget.

India to Singapore - A Complete Guide - Singapore Packages from India

Singapore may be small in size, but this country has enough to keep you amazed for months! One of the top tourist destinations in Asia, Singapore is bursting with shopping arenas, theme parks, futuristic gardens, ritzy resorts, eclectic restaurants and heritage sites. When flying from India to Singapore , prepare to land in a wonderland of sorts.

Indians’ Love for Singapore

About 7.5 percent of Singapore’s population is of Indian ethnicity. Also, Tamil (the language commonly spoken in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu) is one of the 4 official languages of this island country. Heritage aside, Indians have a preference for Singapore when it comes to higher education and jobs. The strong economy and high-quality of life attracts a lot of Indian expats looking to grow in their career.

Even in terms of tourism, Singapore figures on most Indians’ top list of places to travel abroad, especially theirs who have never stepped outside of India. This is mainly because of relative affordability (as compared to other developed countries in the west), short flight duration and reasonable airfare. The abundance of skyscrapers, malls, touristy places, well-connected public transport system, nature parks and activities sure add to the charm of visiting Singapore!

Where is Singapore?

The Republic of Singapore is a city-state that is part of Southeast Asia. This island nation is located off the Malay Peninsula. The Singaporean territory consists of Mainland Singapore, apart from 63 satellite islands or islets and an outlying islet.

Only 3 of these islands are inhabited while 4 are reserved for the Army. Singapore is home to 10 artificial islands that have been reclaimed from the sea. Spread over 728.3 square kilometres, this Asian country lies just 1 degree north of the equator, putting it in the northern hemisphere.

Singapore’s weather is mostly humid, with a dry season from February to April – making it a great time for a vacation. Singapore follows the Singapore Time (SGT) or Singapore Standard Time (SST) which is UTC+8.

Respect to Singapore Culture & Sentiments

Singapore’ history & culture is a mix of Eastern and Western influences. The ever-increasing influx of foreigners in a land where multiple ethnicities are present underscores the importance of being respectful to everyone.

What to Do and What Not To

Follow these tips to have a smooth time in Singapore:

  • Address elders as “uncle” or “auntie” to give honour and appear polite.
  • Eating or littering is prohibited on most sidewalks and public transport. Disobeying these rules can attract huge fines and punishment in the form of community service or jail term.
  • Remember to stand in a queue on the left when riding an escalator. The right of way is given to those in a hurry.

Fortunately, Singapore does not have a dress code, and visitors are free to wear whatever they are comfortable in. One must keep in mind the hot and humid climate of this island country though. Light, breathable fabrics and flip flops are great for sightseeing. However, it’s nice to have something stylish if you’re going to a fine-dining restaurant.

What to Carry

Singapore’ weather warrants lots of sunscreen, a pair of shades and an umbrella or a raincoat for those unseasonal showers. If you have Singapore walking tours on your itinerary, wear comfy shoes and carry a backpack with water to keep you hydrated.

Things to Note if Travelling with Kids

Singapore tour packages from India that cater to families with children offer much for the little ones, at the same time, putting the parents’ worries to rest. Some pointers for travelling with kids:

  • Whether it’s Singapore resorts or public restrooms, this nation is very safe for children and convenient for parents. In fact, Singapore Airport has diaper changing stations in both the male and female restrooms!
  • There are plenty of free attractions for toddlers such as the Singapore cable car in Sentosa or Gardens by the Bay (Children’s Garden only). And if you are paying, there is the SEA Aquarium, Science Centre and lots of theme parks.
  • Thanks to the robust medical infrastructure, in case you have an emergency, you can ensure proper treatment for your child in Singapore.

Activities & Things to Do

Adventure Sports

Thrill-seekers rejoice! Singapore offers night safari, F1, indoor skydiving and even water sports like scuba diving, snorkelling, river safari, stand-up paddle boating, reverse bungee, kayaking and indoor surfing to holidayers.

Whether you wish to buy electronics for yourself or souvenirs for family or just window shop, the countless malls and shopping streets of Singapore will baffle you. Pick Orchard Road for high-end malls and branded articles or head to Chinatown or Little India for big bargains.

Explore the Parks & Gardens

It is not just nature reserves but manmade gardens that add to the greenery of Singapore. Stroll through Gardens by the Bay, Fort Canning Park or Singapore Botanic Gardens among several others.

What to do in Singapore for Honeymoon

The ideal Singapore honeymoon package will include various romantic activities like a river cruise along Clarke Quay. A dinner date at the top of Marina Bay Sands, with a bird’s eye view of the entire nation or a night of drinking and dancing at a beach bar in Sentosa are other ideas.

What to do in Singapore with Family

To keep the whole family entertained, a trip to Universal Studios Singapore is highly recommended. If the heart-thumping rides are too wild for your comfort, watch the fireworks and waterworks near the Merlion or visit Singapore Zoo or Jurong Bird Park to feel one with nature.

What to do in Singapore on a Budget

Loads of free things in Singapore await the travel on a shoestring budget. Listen to a live concert at the Esplanade, try the tree-top walk at MacRitchie Reservoir or go on a trail hike to Mount Faber Park or Chestnut Nature Park.

What to do in Singapore for Non Swimmers

One does not need to know swimming to make the most of Singapore’s nightlife, walking tours or food trails. In fact, the underwater glass tunnel that is also the famous SEA Aquarium, lets you observe sea creatures without even getting wet!

It is only a few hours from India to Singapore but the buzz of activity there feels like it’s a world far removed from your humdrum life. Plan your vacation soon to experience all the best offerings of this tiny nation.

singapore tourism from india

With its ease of travel, multicultural offerings, and constantly-evolving attractions and experiences, Singapore is a top holiday destination for outbound travellers from India .

In a move to encourage even more Indian travellers to choose Singapore as their destination of choice for their upcoming summer vacations, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and its industry partners have launched a series of exciting offers under the ‘Family Times’ banner. Under “Enjoy Your Picture-perfect Family Holiday in Singapore”, audiences are invited to the city through limited-time promotions. These include airfares starting from as low as INR 6,000, 50% off airfares for children, and other exclusive discounts on various experiences. The STB has joined forces with Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Sentosa Development Corporation, Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) and travel experiences platform Pelago, to urge travellers to explore unique activities and experiences.

With direct flight connections from 16* Indian cities within a 3.5 to 5.5 hours flight duration, it is convenient for the burgeoning number of outbound travellers to enjoy Singapore’s breadth of offerings. Singapore is known for its world-class attractions, excellent infrastructure, and family-friendly activities. The country has something for everyone, from iconic theme parks and museums to award-winning green spaces and cultural experiences. Visitors can choose from a wide array of options – via platforms like Pelago – during their holiday in Singapore. From the many fun-filled discoveries awaiting in the Sentosa island, to the wild adventures in the Night Safari or Singapore Zoo (under the MWG), awe-inspiring Avatar Experience at Gardens by the Bay, the Asia debut of whimsical and Instagrammable 29Rooms playground, or walking tours of precincts such as Chinatown and Jalan Besar that offer refreshingly new perspectives, families will be hard-pressed to choose how best to spend their holidays in Singapore.

In 2022, India accounted for 686,000 of the overall 6.3 million global visitor arrivals, emerging as Singapore’s second-largest source market after Indonesia.

Speaking about the upcoming travel season, Mr. GB Srithar, Regional Director, India, Middle East, South Asia and Africa said, “Summer vacations are a treasured time for families across India to spend quality time with their loved ones, and we are glad that Singapore continues to be a favourite destination. In the run-up to the summer travel season, we wanted to celebrate the joy of family travel – experiencing and doing things together and creating memories of a picture-perfect holiday in Singapore. Together with Singapore tourism partners, we are encouraging travellers to book their next family vacation to the city. This summer, we look forward to welcoming our Indian friends and fans to experience our new and transformed attractions and experiences, and reimagine what a completely enjoyable family vacation can be.”

Mr. Sy Yen Chen, General Manager India for Singapore Airlines shared, “This summer, to celebrate the joy of family holidays, we are offering this special children’s discount on airfares as it is our way of welcoming our youngest customers back on board for a fun-filled vacation. The Lion City continues to be a popular destination for the India market, and the strong demand we are seeing from across the country is testimony to this fact. Now, with up to 50% off on child fares to Singapore, there’s never been a better time to plan your next family holiday.”

Singapore Airlines currently operates 96 flights a week from 8 cities across India.

Mr Chew Tiong Heng, Divisional Director, Business and Experience Development, Sentosa Development Corporation, said, “A mere 15-minute away from the city centre, Sentosa is an island destination that is highly frequented by Indian travellers, especially families with children. As we emerge from our Golden Jubilee celebrations, we have also refreshed the Sentosa brand to further emphasise the experiential offerings to be discovered. Enjoy family time on one of our heritage- and sustainability-themed guided tours, Sentosights, search for four friendly giants called Explorers of Sentosa, or be mesmerised by the Sentosa Musical Fountain at Central Beach Bazaar.”

Cambodia, India, Indonesia are Vietnam's fastest growing tourism markets

C ambodia is Vietnam's most rapidly growing tourism market with the number of visitors from the country in the first quarter increasing by 335% from the same period of 2019.

It was followed by India (304%), Indonesia (188%), Taiwan (145%), Laos (125%), and Spain (123%), according to data from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.

Singapore, Australia, South Korea, and Germany rounded off the top 10.

Asia has become a bright spot for Vietnam’s inbound tourism due to the visa-free stay of 30 days for nationals of ASEAN member countries and the increasing launches of direct flights from Southeast Asia, insiders said.

A number of Indian billionaires have been hiring luxury resorts in Phu Quoc, Da Nang and Ha Long to organize weddings, further boosting Vietnam’s reputation on the global tourism map.

Australians are also increasingly traveling to Vietnam thanks to low airfares and a number of new direct flights from their country to Hanoi and HCMC.

Since last August citizens of European countries such as Spain and Germany have been able to stay visa-free for 45 days instead of the earlier 15.

According to the tourism authority, the number of Chinese tourists last year was only 30% of the 2019 figure, but 69% in the first three months of this year.

Many Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia have waived visas for Chinese and Indians amid an intense tourism race, and tourism experts want the Vietnamese government to do the same.

Singapore recently announced it would consider waiving visas for Indian tourists.

Martin Koerner, head of the Vietnam Business Forum’s tourism working group, said besides visa waivers Vietnam should also improve the quality and diversity of its tourism services and open offices in key markets to attract foreign visitors.

The number of foreign arrivals in January-March was 4.6 million, up 3.2% from 2019, the first time a quarterly number has exceeded pre-pandemic levels since the country reopened its borders in March 2022.

It represented a 72% increase from last year and 25% of this year’s target of 18 million.
