50 photos that show Taylor Swift's meteoric rise from a Nashville country singer to the most famous musician in the world

  • Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," on Friday.
  • In the 18 years since she released her debut album, Swift has become a billionaire.
  • Here's a photographic journey through her career, her many eras, and her blockbuster tours.

Insider Today

In the 18 years since Taylor Swift released her first album, she's been a country star, a pop star, and a voice of a generation.

She's a four-time album of the year winner, a billionaire, and the first person with a tour grossing $1 billion . She also rocked the music industry when she decided to re-record her first five albums so she'd own the rights to her own music.

Plus, her 11th album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," is set for a massive debut on the charts after it was released on Friday.

But she wasn't always this juggernaut. Here's a look at her impressive career, from her 2006 debut to her 2024 superstardom.

Taylor Swift released her self-titled debut album in 2006. At the time, there was no telling that this 16-year-old country singer would become one of the most iconic musicians in history.

But by May 2007, Swift was already playing to large crowds. At the time, her aesthetic consisted of flowy dresses, acoustic guitar, curly hair, and cowboy boots.

Her guitar has been a constant companion from 2007 to 2024.

Swift's debut single was "Tim McGraw," named, of course, after the country star. In May 2007, she performed the song to him and his wife, Faith Hill, at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

An EP, “Beautiful Eyes,” was released in July 2008, just two months after she performed at Stagecoach Music Festival — essentially, country music's Coachella.

Even as her star was rising, Swift made time to take selfies with fans — on digital cameras!

By August 2009, her second album "Fearless" had been released and she was headlining Madison Square Garden.

A turning point in her career came during the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2009, when Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech to declare Beyoncé deserved the award.

In December, she performed with one of her then-musical idols, John Mayer. The two would go on to briefly date, inspiring her song "Dear John."

At the 2010 Grammys, Swift performed with Stevie Nicks — 14 years later, Swift referenced their connection in the song "Clara Bow."

Later that night, the "You Belong With Me" singer was gobsmacked to win album of the year. She'd later write about this night in "Long Live."

Her third album, "Speak Now," was released in October 2010. The world tour began in February 2011.

It sold over 1 million copies in its first week, the highest single-week sales for a female country artist. She also became the first female artist to have 11 songs on the Hot 100 simultaneously.

She continued to collaborate with musical legends. She brought James Taylor out at her Madison Square Garden show in November 2011.

In 2012, she made her first jump away from country music to more straightforward pop. The cowboy boots were nowhere to be found.

The debut single from her fourth album, "Red," called "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," became her first No. 1 on the Hot 100.

As her musical style changed, so did her style. She traded flowing dresses and cowboy boots for form-fitting dresses and high heels; gone was the curly hair, traded for sleek straight tresses.

The Red Tour grossed $150.2 million, making it the highest-grossing country tour ever when it ended in 2014.

She became the first female solo artist in 20 years to perform a stadium tour in Australia. The last female artist to do it was Madonna in 1993.

In August 2014, she left behind country with the song "Shake It Off," a pure pop song.

Later that year, she performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show beside then-BFF Karlie Kloss.

speak now tour madison square garden

"1989," Swift's fifth album, remains a high point of her career. It elevated Swift to pop-icon status and spawned three No. 1 hits and two more top-10 singles.

speak now tour madison square garden

It was also the era of her "squad." People are still captivated by who is in Swift’s inner circle.

speak now tour madison square garden

To top off the "1989" era, she won her second album of the year Grammy in February 2016.

speak now tour madison square garden

Her bleached blonde era — known as "Bleachella," since she debuted it at Coachella in 2016 — showed that people were obsessed with her every move.

speak now tour madison square garden

But by July 2016, Swift had vanished. Her feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West had resurfaced, with many on social media turning against her.

speak now tour madison square garden

In 2017, she cleared her social media and told us: "There will be no explanation, just reputation." Her sixth album, "Reputation," was released in November.

speak now tour madison square garden

"Reputation" brought a new dark and gritty aesthetic. But the old Taylor, who loves interacting with her fans, was still in there.

speak now tour madison square garden

The Reputation Stadium Tour was her first all-stadium tour. Upon its completion in November 2018, it grossed $345.7 million, making it the highest-grossing North American tour ever.

In a savvy move, she reclaimed the snake imagery that had been used against her by critics.

speak now tour madison square garden

But after her two years of all-black edginess, 2019 brought a complete aesthetic shift.

speak now tour madison square garden

Her seventh album, "Lover," which was released in August 2019, is full of love songs, pastel rainbows, and bubblegum pop.

speak now tour madison square garden

"Lover" was her sixth consecutive No. 1 album and the best-selling album of 2019. Her concerts for the album were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

speak now tour madison square garden

In July 2020, Swift surprised fans with her eighth album, "Folklore." It would go on to win album of the year — she was the first woman ever to win three times.

speak now tour madison square garden

After a seven-year hiatus, she returned to her country roots. She performed the song "Betty" at the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards.

speak now tour madison square garden

In November 2021, Swift released the 10-minute version of her song "All Too Well" from 2012. She also directed an accompanying short film starring Dylan O'Brien and Sadie Sink.

speak now tour madison square garden

"Red (Taylor’s Version)," her re-recorded version of the 2012 album "Red" was a huge hit. "All Too Well (10-Minute Version)" became the longest No. 1 song in the chart's history.

speak now tour madison square garden

But just re-recording wasn't enough for Swift. In August 2022, she announced her 10th album, "Midnights," which became yet another hit.

speak now tour madison square garden

The year 2023 was the year of Swift, as she embarked on her globe-spanning Eras Tour. The setlist pays homage to her career. She brought out the gold fringe for the "Fearless" set.

speak now tour madison square garden

Since "Lover" never got a tour of its own, it kicks off the show. Four years after its release, Swifties got "Cruel Summer" to the top of the Hot 100.

speak now tour madison square garden

During her "Speak Now" set, she brings back her koi-fish guitar and the purple dresses.

speak now tour madison square garden

During the "Red" set, she interacts with some of her youngest fans.

speak now tour madison square garden

In the "1989" portion, we get taken back in time to when Swift loved a two-piece set.

speak now tour madison square garden

The "Reputation" era might be long gone, but the snakes are back for this portion of the show.

speak now tour madison square garden

She also pays homage to the woodsy, cottage-core vibes of "Folklore" and its sister album, "Evermore."

speak now tour madison square garden

Swift ends the night with the "Midnights" set, which spawned two of her two most recent hits, "Karma" and "Anti-Hero."

speak now tour madison square garden

The Eras Tour has become a global phenomenon. It's the first tour to ever surpass $1 billion in revenue ... and it's not over yet.

speak now tour madison square garden

In February 2024, Swift became the first artist to win album of the year four times when she won for "Midnights." That night, she announced her 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department."

speak now tour madison square garden

On its release, Swift surprised fans by announcing "TTPD" is a double album, and she dropped 15 more songs. It's set to be, once again, huge.

speak now tour madison square garden

In 18 years, Swift has released 11 albums, four re-records, won 14 Grammys, had 11 No. 1 hits, become a billionaire, and broken countless records. She's showing no sign of slowing down.

Taylor Swift wraps her Speak Now tour in New York City, sings with James Taylor and Selena Gomez

After 80 sold-out shows, Taylor Swift wrapped the North American leg of her Speak Now World Tour last night in front of a screaming crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York City. And what a show it was.

After a terrific set by South Carolina rockers NEEDTOBREATHE, whose strong sense of melody make it clear why Ms. “I love a good hook” Swift hand-picked them to open for her, the star of the evening emerged from the stage to lead her massive production. I’ve said it before, but allow me to reiterate: Anyone that doesn’t think Taylor Swift should’ve won Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards has never seen her live. That girl is the definition of an entertainer.

Sparks literally flew (courtesy of harnessed, floating dancers) during “Sparks Fly,” twinkling trees shone through a foggy, gazebo’d set during “Enchanted,” fearless dancers dropped out of enormous bells on “Haunted,” and, of course, Taylor donned a ball gown and soared over the audience in a Juliet balcony for her grand “Love Story” finale.

The show is a Cirque-du-Soleil level spectacle, but Taylor has a rare ability to infuse her spectacle with sincerity, and she sounds in fine voice throughout. (She’s definitely singing live, though at times I did suspect a little bit of backing-track assistance.)

Clearly, Swift wanted to make sure she ended the American section of her Speak Now Tour — there are six final dates in March in Australia and New Zealand — with a bang. And because she can’t resist a good cameo, Swift brought out her AMAs dancing partner and BFF Selena Gomez, who sang her hit “Who Says” to a sea of crying tween girls:

But, you know, one guest wasn’t enough for the final show! During her encore, Swift told a story about singing “Fire and Rain” in her fifth-grade chorus class and how she’s actually named after James Taylor, and then, whataya know? James Taylor himself walked out onstage to sing “Fire and Rain,” a song that hit a very nice place in Swift’s small but sweet voice. Listen below:

A few moments later, the Speak Now World Tour closed its curtains in America for the final time.

All in all, the pop-country sensation’s massively successful tour (which I’ve now seen on three separate occasions) is estimated to have brought in over $100 million in ticket sales — and that’s not even accounting for the extensive merchandising and Cover Girl endorsements that permeate every inch of whatever stadium she inhabits.

Whether you’re a fan or not, the reality is that Taylor Swift has entertained millions of ticket-buyers across the country, and it is truly a dazzling thing to a see a performer at the peak of her popularity put on such an elaborate, well-choreographed show. (And kudos too to her dancers, who bounced effortlessly from ballet to hip hop to aerial acrobatics).

Taylor performs with poise and graciousness, and with little more than a simple sashay in a sequined dress, she can turn an eager audience into a deafeningly loud, glowstick-waving, singing-at-the-top-of-their lungs army. In short, she makes a whole lot of people very, very happy.

Until next tour, Taylor.

Five more observations from the show:

1. To give you a sense of the the girl-to-boy ratio at a T-Swift show with 15,000 audience members, this was the men’s bathroom last night:

2. An alarming number of people showed their support for Taylor’s new kitten by either dressing as cats or holding signs that said “Speak Meow.”

3. One girl, who looked about 13 years old, had a Christmas lights-enhanced sign that read “I Still Believe In Falling In Love!” And people says kids are too cynical these days! (Also, how do fans make those crazy light-up signs?)

4. Taylor Swift’s mother took a stroll through the audience before the show started, and the girl in front of me shoved a CD (presumably a sample of her singing) into Mrs. Swift’s hands. When she accepted the album, the girl began gleefully jumping and squealing for about five straight minutes. It was sweet.

5. My coworker Leah Greenblatt, spotted Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield singing along by the side of the stage. And she suspects the incognito figure in the hoodie lurking stage left may have been Justin Bieber.

Did you catch the Speak Now World Tour? If so, share your favorite moments of the show in the comments below.

Taylor Swift on Her ‘Speak Now’ Tour

By Austin Scaggs

Austin Scaggs

F or most 21-year-olds, summertime means partying, tanning and hanging with friends. Not so for Taylor Swift , who’s spending the season selling out arenas and stadiums around the country. Her Speak Now tour has packed the NFL homes of the Patriots (twice), Steelers and Lions, with more on the way. “I’m still a little surprised every time we pull into a stadium,” says Swift, checking in from Nashville. “It’s really nuts.” By the time Swift rocks Madison Square Garden for two nights in November, she’ll have logged 98 shows this year. She promises even more in 2012 – and she’ll also be working on her fourth album. Of course, she’s already written enough new songs. “You know me,” she says. “I’ve got lots.”

30 Best Albums of 2010: Taylor Swift, ‘Speak Now’

Your show features aerialists, fireworks and innumerable costume and set changes. Is It hard to remember all those cues? There are so many little details that every night is like a mental challenge. You’re just glad everything worked out.

What’s your greatest memory from the tour so far? On our first night at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, right as I sang a lyric in “Fearless” – “With you I’d dance in a storm in my best dress, fearless” – I felt a drop of rain hit my hand. Then another, then another, then a monsoon broke out. I saw girls with their perfectly curled hair turn sopping wet. I thought, “They’re all gonna leave.” Instead, they went nuts, dancing in the rain, screaming louder. It was awesome.

What inspired all the crazy sets? Videos of musicals like Grease , The Music Man , Bye Bye Birdie . . . I saw Annie Get Your Gun and Wicked on Broadway, and I was captivated. Now we have costumes by the designer from Wicked .

How do you unwind after a show? Well, I have another meet-and-greet afterward. It’s called the T Party, and we have a giant tent with a Moroccan-living-room setup every night. During the show I have people scour the audience for the craziest people out there, the ones that paint their faces or cover themselves in balloons or dress up like a banana or wrap themselves in Christmas lights or dress up like my alter ego [T-Swizzle] from the video I did with T-Pain. Sometimes I’ll say, “Row 14, six seats in – go get that seven-year-old girl who knows all the lyrics to ‘Dear John.'”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

I read that at one show, some of the men’s bathrooms were converted to women’s, because the audience is, like, 80 percent ladies. True? That’s so funny! Someone actually wrote a review and reviewed the bathroom access? Ha! There seem to be lots of boys out there, more than ever.

You tweeted that you had fun at the Museum of Natural History in New York recently. I was going to go to the New-York Historical Society, but it was closed. I almost cried. But we saw the dinosaurs and stuff, which was a close second. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with history: the history of our country, the history of music.

Let’s start with the music. I’ve been obsessed with Fifties and Sixties music, like the Shirelles and the Beach Boys . Like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” – if I ever had a wedding, I’d walk down the aisle to that song.

And American history? I just read a 900-page book called The Kennedy Women , which goes back to the first Kennedy woman coming from Ireland in the 1800s. This morning I bought books about John Adams, Lincoln’s Cabinet, the Founding Fathers and Ellis Island.

You covered “Dancing in the Dark” and “Livin’ on a Prayer” in Jersey recently. Big fan of those guys? Those are two of my heroes, for different reasons. Springsteen made albums that matter. His lyrics are a lot like poetry. With Bon Jovi , there’s just a melodic stickiness to their songs that I’ve always been drawn to. Also, Jon Bon Jovi was the first rocker in the Eighties to smile a lot. I learned that on Behind the Music when I was, like, nine years old.

At shows, you’ve been writing lyrics by artists like Tom Petty on your left arm. How’d that start? One day at rehearsals I was having a rough day, and I wrote a lyric by my friend Selena Gomez on my arm: “You’ve got every right to a beautiful life.” It looked cool, so now I put lyrics on my arm every night. It’s like a mood ring.

Taylor Swift Previously Teased Having a Koi Fish Pond in Her Living Room

Kelly Corbett - Author

Jan. 27 2023, Published 4:43 p.m. ET

Last night we met Taylor Swift at midnight for the premiere of her music video "Lavender Haze" off her album Midnights. We were invited into her enchanting dream-like world, filled with lavender fields, purple pools, and her hottie weatherman love interest, played by trans model and artist Laith Ashley.

One detail that caught fans' attention is Taylor's inclusion of koi fish in the music video. As she's drawing a curtain in her home, a sea of koi fish and purple smoke can be seen on the outside. These fish seen in the video aren't just an extremely specific detail for fans to ponder over, these fish are also a familiar detail.

Taylor has previously expressed her adoration for the colorful swimmers in the past. In fact, she has a guitar that features a koi fish design. Read all about her this iconic guitar and why fans think she dropping a major clue about the next album she will re-release.

Taylor Swift played a koi fish guitar during her 'Speak Now' tour.

Following the release of third studio album Speak Now , Taylor went on tour. During the North American leg of her tour, she debuted an eye-catching guitar while performing at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was the color of water and featured four red and yellow koi fish that appeared to be swimming around the soundhole.

We never saw that guitar again until late 2022 when it was seen in her music video for "Anti-Hero."

What do the koi fish symbolize in "Lavendar Haze"?

Taylor is known for planting Easter eggs in her music videos, and given that Taylor included the koi fish in her music video for "Lavender Haze," and the koi fish guitar in "Anti-Hero," fans are certain she's trying to drop a hint about her upcoming album re-release.

As a refresher, Taylor made the decision to re-record all of her albums after a legal battle with Scooter Braun over her masters. So far, she has re-released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) .

Fans believe Speak Now is the next album on the list to be re-recorded — and the koi fish were meant to serve as a major hint.

she pushes down the walls of the midnights era to the koi fish space to signify that we are now entering the speak now tv era #fact #truth pic.twitter.com/av0HIRBx3X — ashley (@wildIuve) January 27, 2023

Of course, this is not confirmed and is only a hunch.

The award-winning artist does seem to really enjoy koi fish and may have just included them in the video for fun. In 2010, she spoke with Rolling Stone about her then-new condo in Nashville, which surprisingly featured a living room pond. "The pond is a moat around the fireplace and may possibly have koi fish in it, depending on my commitment," she told the outlet.

While it's unknown if she ever got to add koi fish to her living room pond, Taylor definitely made sure they got in "Lavender Haze" for Swifties to go into a (love) spiral over.

What Does It Take to Headline Madison Square Garden in 2024?

A new crop of artists will play MSG for the first time this year — some of which might surprise you. What bars do artists currently have to clear to play the World's Most Famous Arena?

Madison Square Garden

Emily Lichter has managed the band Lake Street Dive for more than a decade, since “they were playing for tips” in small clubs on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. While the retro-pop group is not a household name, their fortunes have changed quite a bit: Later this year, they’re slated to play New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden for the first time, where capacity ranges from 12,000 to 18,000, depending on the configuration of a show.

“Our joke is they’re the biggest band that no one’s ever heard of,” Lichter says.

Inside the Creative Direction for Phish’s Sphere Residency: ‘Trying to Design the Unpredictable’

Trending on billboard.

Every year, a new crop of artists tries to level up their live act and make the leap to arenas. Going for it can be fraught — even for those who are confident they can pull it off. “I’ve heard all the horror stories about people who make the arena jump too soon,” says Ed Harris , manager of Cigarettes After Sex, the tranquil rock band who will also play MSG for the first time later this year. “You’ve got to be very careful.”

“You can’t have a weak stomach,” agrees Andrew Friedman , who manages Wallows, playing their first MSG show in August. The process can involve “a lot more sleepless nights, and more calls to the band’s agents and promoter than they would probably love,” Friedman continues.

Managers and agents often speak about the live side of the music business as if they are basketball coaches stressing the importance of fundamentals in post-game interviews. Be “methodical” and “consistent;” rely on “hard work” and “elbow grease.” Nearly everyone offers up a variation of the same phrase: “Don’t skip steps.” ( Olivia Rodrigo used a version of this rationale to explain why she didn’t jump straight to arenas after the runaway success of her first album.)

“You’re trying to sell out every show and you’re trying to not go backwards,” says Robby Fraser , a partner at WME Music. “A way to not go backwards is not jump ahead too fast.”

Coachella Ticket Sales Were Slower Than Usual, But Other Festivals Are Seeing a Dip Too

On top of that, “the artists’ egos get bruised” when ticket counts come up short, according to Duffy McSwiggin , svp at Wasserman Music. Acts can become the butt of jokes, as screenshots showing large patches of empty seats or bottom-of-the-barrel ticket prices circulate on social media. Plus logistically, “there’s damage control we have to do,” McSwiggin continues. “That might be rescaling the house, closing the top and moving people down — that takes a lot of people hours.”

To avoid ending up in this position, agents say they pore over data from past shows, trying to determine the extent of the demand for a performance in any given market. Streaming numbers offer one measure of an artist’s appeal, but they are less useful for gauging whether a listen will support an artist financially, whether that means buying a ticket or merchandise.

“Somebody can have 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, but they might not even fill out a 500-capacity club,” Fraser says. “Those are people that at one point click a button. But that doesn’t really equate to your faithful fans.”

Climate Change Has Caused Event Insurance Prices to Triple — and Indie Promoters Are Bearing…

Instead of scrutinizing streams, Millhauser is “obsessed with all the data surrounding previous market plays:” For example, “did the tickets blow out at the on-sale or slowly trickle to sell-out;” “what zip codes did the fans come from;” “was it a Tuesday night show or a Friday night show last time?”

Managers have their own rules of the road. “When you can put up two Radio City shows” — capacity over 5,700 — “and sell them out quickly, that is a clear indicator that you’re worth Madison Square Garden,” says Drew Simmons , a partner at Foundations Artist Management. (A rep for MSG did not respond to requests for comment.)

For Mt. Joy, who are making their MSG debut in September, the equation was different. “Last year we did two Central Parks,” says Jack Gallagher , the band’s manager. Like Radio City, Central Park Summerstage can fit more than 5,000 people.

However, “arenas are way harder to sell than a field,” according to Gallagher — with a field, “people don’t have to coordinate with their friends and figure out where they’re going to sit, and seats are cheap.” While “it’s definitely still a risk to put up a venue that’s not much bigger than two Central Parks,” he continues, “we just went for it.” ( Ali Hedrick , a partner and agent at Arrival Artists, points out that the band has played more than 30 times in the state of New York since 2017; New York City and Chicago are two of the group’s strongholds.)

Everyone Wants to Reach Superfans. It Won’t Be Easy

Wallows also took an alternate route to MSG. “We know that the audience wanted to be close to the band and on the floor,” Friedman says, “and those balconies at Radio City, they’re far away.” Instead, Wallows elected to perform four shows at Terminal 5, a 3,000-capacity venue. “Now do we go back and do Radio City?” Friedman asks. “That starts to feel like a lateral move. You can either play it safe, or you can take a swing.”

Some artists have gusts of wind at their back which might speed their path to arenas. Many bands didn’t tour during COVID, but once the world began to open up somewhat, Mt. Joy “did 33 drive-in shows” — outdoor performances with social distance measures in place — “during the pandemic,” according to Hedrick. “So when other artists went away, they kept touring and played in front of a lot of people. That was one thing that made them stand out from the crowd” when life returned fully to normal.

Why The Music Industry Keeps Turning To REVERB For Its Eco Needs

One of Harding’s longtime management clients is The Neighbourhood, who spent much of their career steadily growing their live business. “Touring was leading the way; it wasn’t streaming super heavy,” Harding says.

During COVID, songs from The Neighbourhood became the soundtrack of choice for millions of TikTok videos, leading to a hefty increase in streaming. “Should they reassemble and come back from hiatus, they’ll do an MSG now if they want to — when you have explosive moments, you can maybe miss a step,” Harding says.

But “if you’re not having those, you’re just slowly building,” he continues. “You quietly, diligently take the steps until people are like, ‘Wait, they’re worth that many tickets? I had no idea.'”

An Ode to Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts Tour Tank Tops

At her sold-out shows, the pop sensation has been giving the staple a twist the way only she can

Of course, Rodrigo didn’t exactly grow up with the Sex and the City generation. In fact, the Grammy-winning pop hit machine celebrated her first birthday a mere two days before the HBO series’ final episode aired. But it seems that in early adulthood, she has found comfort in the hilarious, brash, and often messy lives of its four protagonists. (Oh, and like this author, Rodrigo identifies as a Carrie .)

So what better way to share that than with a personalized top that serves as a billboard for the thousands of fans who’ve been packing stadiums across the country to see her (as well as the countless more viewing clips online)? As a way to reference her favorite pieces of pop culture and project jokes and more to the audience, Rodrigo’s tank tops have become one of the most winning aspects of her Guts World Tour .

As with the SATC tank she wore for her Big Apple audience, the singer has used her tops to spotlight culture from the turn of the millennium, a time period that has interested her since the beginning of her career. Longtime fans will recall when Rodrigo celebrated the 2021 release of her debut album, Sour , with a live, prom-themed set on YouTube, and the promotional art winked to the cover of Hole’s Live Through This . Then there was the “Good 4 U” video , for which Rodrigo donned a cheerleading uniform identical to Mandy Moore’s from The Princess Diaries (2001).

As the Guts tour rages on, such nods have only become been more plentiful and expansive, encompassing everything from TLC’s “No Scrubs” to the Beatles’ “I’m Down.” At her first show in Palm Springs, the Disney alum rocked a tank that said, “I’m Just a Girl,” in homage to No Doubt’s 1995 hit debut single. Fittingly, a little over a month later, the pop star took a break from her tour to join No Doubt onstage at Coachella , where she wore another tank—one bedazzled with “I ❤️ ND.”

With these winks, it doesn’t feel like the “Vampire” artist is simply trying to appeal to the generations before her (and they don’t reek of “born in the wrong era” Tumblrcore either). Instead, the nods speak to the genuine approach Rodrigo takes to making her music. Throughout her shows, she has brought out ’90s–’00s stars like Jewel and Sheryl Crow, arguably surprising guests for a singer of her age, whose fan base pools in the tween-to-teen age bracket. But an obvious thread connects the work of these icons and the new hitmaker: Rodrigo simply wants to extend her appreciation to the greats who’ve inspired her confessional songwriting, and her tank tops have become her newest outlet for doing so.

At the same time, the tanks also perfectly capture Rodrigo’s cheeky sense of humor. Tracks like “All-American Bitch” and “Bad Idea Right?” explore themes of feminism and sexuality with dry humor and impressive depth. Onstage, she’s brought this same sauciness to her tanks.

At one performance, “ Ne pas toucher ” was splashed across Rodrigo’s chest. (That’s French for “Do not touch.”) At another, her shirt said: “I kiss better than I cook.” With plenty of songs about disappointing men in her discography, Rodrigo obviously knows what it’s like to date a dud, and one of her tops—hearkening back to Britney Spears’s memorable ’02 baby tee —simply instructed her fans to “Dump him.”

Even Rodrigo’s friends have been getting in on the fun, like fellow singer and Gen Z star Conan Gray, who featured on the star’s Instagram in a tank that said: “U call urself a Livie? Name 10 Olivia Rodriguez songs …” (a reference to this viral TikTok ).

I honestly can’t think of a better garment to become the Rodrigo staple than the tank top—at least for right now. It’s understated, playful, and reliable. Like her discography, Rodrigo’s style isn’t afraid to embrace her youth and her passions. With a fusion of Clueless schoolgirl prep and early-’00s Avril Lavigne punk , the singer-songwriter dresses like an actual 21-year-old—a stylish one who wears vintage Versace on the red carpet , mind you , but still, one who knows who she is and what she wants. Only time will tell how Rodrigo’s style continues to evolve with her career. For now, as the tank declares: She’s just a girl.
