Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ is 2015’s highest grossing concert tour by far

Taylor Swift, showing performing Aug. 22, 2015, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, tops Pollstar's annual ranking of the highest-grossing concert tours worldwide. Her "1989" tour grossed slightly more than $250 million, $200 million of that just from her North American tour stops.

In the concert business, 2015 was a banner year for 1989, as Taylor Swift and her blockbuster “1989” tour topped Pollstar’s annual ranking of the most popular concert attractions globally.

Swift’s tour, featuring a bevy of different guest stars in nearly every city she visited, grossed just over $250 million worldwide. Equally significant, almost $200 million of that came from North American dates, trampling the all-time North American record of $162 million posted by the Rolling Stones in 2005, according to the concert industry tracking magazine’s preliminary top 20 tour report.

------------

FOR THE RECORD

An earlier edition of this post stated that Garth Brooks sold nearly 5 million tickets in 2015, and the Rolling Stones had sold 7.8 million and U2 sold 6.9 million. Those numbers were dollar figures for those acts’ average gross revenue per show.

The 26-year-old pop star performed 83 shows in 53 cities and sold almost 2.3 million tickets during the year, Pollstar reported.

AC/DC placed a distant second behind Swift, grossing $180 million from 54 shows in 50 cities, making it the veteran hard rock band’s most successful tour ever.

Rounding out Pollstar’s top five were One Direction, with a global gross of $158.8 million, U2 at $152.2 million, and the Foo Fighters, whose $127-million gross at the box office put the band in the year-end top 10 for the first time in its long career.

Pollstar editor Gary Bongiovanni noted that the top 20 grossing tours alone generated box office revenue of $2.2 billion on sales of more than 24 million tickets in 2015, an increase of $200 million and 4 million tickets over 2014.

Young British pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran also landed in the top 10 for the first time, at No. 7, his $117.3-million gross putting him right behind Fleetwood Mac’s $125.1 million on the tour for which the long-running band was joined by Christine McVie for the first time in more than 15 years.

At No. 8, country singer Kenny Chesney logged $116.4 million over the course of 57 dates, and in the first full year of his return to the concert stage, Garth Brooks landed at No. 9, with a gross of $114.9 million.

Brooks, however, grossed an average of just under $5 million per city, placing him third behind the Rolling Stones, whose shows averaged $7.8 million at just 14 stadium shows during the year, and U2, which averaged $6.9 million in the 22 stops on the group’s Innocence + Experience tour.

Not surprisingly, the Stones also posted the highest average ticket price in Pollstar’s figures of $174.50, and finished at No. 10 in total box office revenue, grossing $109.7 million.

Another touring veteran from the British Invasion with a strong base among more affluent baby boomer music fans, Paul McCartney posted the second-highest average ticket price of $155.76, and placed No. 13 on the box-office revenue ranking with $77.7 million.

The rest of Pollstar’s top 20 grossing tours were Madonna (No. 11, $88.4 million), comedian Kevin Hart (No. 12, $82.2 million), McCartney, Elton John (No. 14, $77.6 million), Disney Latin America telenova and pop star Violetta (No. 15, $76.8 million), Maroon 5 (No. 16, $72 million), Luke Bryan (No. 17, $71.8 million), Billy Joel (No. 18, $69.9 million), Shania Twain (No. 19, $69 million) and Neil Diamond (No. 20, $68 million).

Pollstar’s full report on the year’s top-grossing tours will be published in the magazine’s Jan. 8 edition.

The 1989 World Tour

Table of contents, background and development.

«I have so many things I've been dreaming up for this. If you look at the makeup of my previous music, as far as production elements go, there are a lot of live drums, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and live bass. And if you look at the landscape of 1989 , it's mostly synths and automated drums and these kind of big epic synth pad sounds, and key bass, and layered vocals. I have a very big band, there are 14 of us, so what you’re going to end up with is more of a live feel in that it's going to be filled in and more dramatic with more layers to it, but never to the point where it's going to feel noisy or overcrowded.» Taylor Swift

The Clean Speech

taylor swift tour in 2015

As is tradition for her tours, Taylor regularly hosted after-show meet and greets for some of her lucky fans. During the concert, her mom Andrea and some members of Taylor Nation carefully watched the crowd to see which fans were the most excited to be there. The bigger the poster, the shinier the costume, the better. If chosen, fans got to enter the backstage VIP experience Loft ’89 backstage hangout after the end of the show. The space was inspired by Taylor’s own New York City apartment that fans had become deeply familiar through her social media. The setup included brick walls, couches, and foods including pizza and homemade cookies.

During the fan meetup, fans would wait around on couches, chatting with others until Taylor would come out to greet them. To pass the time, Loft ’89 included artifacts that every super fan would recognize from previous tours or photoshoots, as well as additional photo opportunities. When Taylor eventually showed up, she would spend time with each group of people, getting to know them and cracking jokes. They would then take a photo together and Taylor would sign one of their belongings, or a laminated tour photo.

Taylor Swift launched "Fearless" tour in Indiana 15 years ago

Swift launched the tour in Evansville and officials named April 23, 2009 as "Taylor Swift Day." Swift was also given a key to the city.

Taylor Swift Nashville concert review: 5 moments from her return on the 'Eras' tour

taylor swift tour in 2015

Believe the hype.

The 'Eras' tour arrived Friday in Nashville with a mountain of expectations. Three nights in a stadium? In the city where her career started? After a mad dash for tickets? And it's her first major tour in nearly five years?

A normal entertainer may balk at these stakes. But Taylor Swift isn't like other entertainers.

Music City's three-night run on the most talked-about tour of the year kicked off Friday inside Nissan Stadium with record-smashing singalongs, show-stopping duets and an only-in-Nashville surprise. Behind Swift's unmatched ambition and sharp-eyed fanfare, it was the kind of show that'll be talked about long after the final song ended.

Not too bad for a girl who moved to Hendersonville nearly two decades ago to chase her songwriting dreams.

Taylor Swift in Nashville: What surprise songs did she song on storm-delayed night 3?

"This dream that I've had since I was so little I can't even remember first having it, this dream came true for me because of this town and the people in it and the love and nurturing and support I received from this town," she said to kick off Friday's show. "I can't tell you how many feelings I have right now."

From swelling crowds to surprise announcements, read on for five highlights from inside opening night of the 'Eras' tour at Nissan Stadium.

More on 'Eras' in Nashville: Taylor Swift in Nashville: Who we want to see surprise fans at Nissan Stadium

Her marathon era

Like the name suggests, Swift covers so much ground in this show. With a 45-song set spanning 10 albums in nearly three-and-a-half hours, 'Eras' embraces a marathoner spirit typically reserved for catch-'em-while-you-can rock icons like Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney.

But unlike blasting "Born To Run" or leading a spontaneous singalong to "Hey Jude," Swift choreographs her set like a conductor would lead an orchestra or a director would deliver a musical. Each moving part — dancers, band members, set pieces — plays a role in telling a story of the "era" being chronicled on stage.

Backed by towering screens and flanked by her reliable dancers, Swift opened the show by inviting her audience into the rainbow-drenched songs of 2019 album "Lover" before donning a sun-soaked dress in a callback to 2008's "Fearless" and embracing a J.R.R. Tolkien-like fantasy for a handful of spellbinding cuts from 2020 album "Evermore." She traveled through the eras in distinct acts with full and abridged songs — like a stadium-sized Broadway production that at one moment soaked the audience in red lighting and backdrops (because, you know, "Red") before recreating a fireside hang for the folk-tinged "Betty" and other songs off Grammy Award-winning album "Folklore."

She offered a fresh spin on well-worn eras — sometimes literally, like when her backup dancers rode beach cruisers across the stage during "Blank Space" — and gave plenty of attention to the four (!!!) albums released since she last embarked on a coast-to-coast tour, including "Anti-Hero," "Bejeweled" and more from the set-closing "Midnights" era.

Her record-breaking era

Swift invited plenty of company to join Friday night's career-spanning adventure. An audience of nearly 70,500 attended the show, setting a single-night Nissan Stadium attendance record, eclipsing past concerts and professional sporting events.

"Oh my beloved Nashville, you're making me feel so good right now," Swift said early in the show. "Tonight is the highest-attended event to take place in the stadium because 70,000 of you decided to hang with us this evening."

And the benchmark may not hold for long. With two more shows slated for this weekend, Swift could break her own record before leaving town.

Her fans' era

They dress for the occasion. They sing along to every word (even when it's 10-minute redux of "All Too Well"). They don't leave the stands until the last note rings out. Beyond songwriter, Swift's superpower may be the dedicated fandom that'll follow her through each cryptic clue, ticketing rush and re-recorded album.

On Friday, these so-called Swifties turned out with bejeweled eye pieces (because "Bejeweled"), head-to-toe cloaks (because "Willow"), snake-covered t-shirts (because "Reputation") and tie-dye pastels (because "Lover"). Some came ready to hear songs that climbed the charts before they were born, while others reveled in re-living eras from life's formative years.

And as each new song kicked in, they jumped at a chance to shout each word — like a group of friends passing around the aux cable on a late night filled with unforgettable songs. Only instead of a designated DJ, they're singing along with Swift.

Or, as Swift described her crowd at one point Friday night: "You guys are, like, on fire."

Her surprise era

After weeks of  well-placed clues and TikTok-fueled speculation , Taylor Swift confirmed Friday — mid-show, no less — which album comes next in her expansive "Taylor's Version" project: "Speak Now."

"I've been planning something for a while," Swift said as the Friday night audience exploded with applause. "It's my love language with you. I plot. I scheme. I plan. And then I get to tell you about it."

As the album title and July 7 release date flashed across the stadium screen, she added: "I think, rather than me speaking about it ... I'd rather just show you."

Swift put a bow on the "Taylor's Version" unveiling with an acoustic rendition of "Sparks Fly," a 2011 single off "Speak Now" before taking audience members back to her self-titled debut album with a piano-backed rendition of 2006's "Teardrops On My Guitar."

"Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" wasn't the only time Swift surprised her fans on Friday night, either. The singer enlisted "Eras" tour opener and indie-rock favorite Phoebe Bridgers for an acoustic duet of "Nothing New," a song the two released together on 2021's "Red (Taylor's Version)."

"This is a regular day in my life," Bridgers quipped as she stepped up the microphone hours after performing her own set.

Swift replied, "I feel the same, getting to sing this song with you for the very first time in a sold-out stadium."

Her openers' era

Bridgers played main support Friday, her first night on the "Eras" tour. As on-and-off rain covered the expansive stage, the singer-songwriter and her five-piece band ripped through dad-dedicated favorite "Kyoto," the sobering "Graceland Too" and other cuts from 2020 album "Punisher."

And the first surprise of the night came during Bridgers' set, when she invited Lucy Dacus and Nashville's own Julien Baker — AKA indie supergroup Boygenius — on stage to sing the trio's new single "Not Strong Enough." Running up and down the stage together, the Boygenius members backed Bridgers through her set-closing number "I Know The End."

"We gotta talk about this," Swift said during her set. "You got to see a genius, a friend ... our creative savoir. I can't believe [Phoebe's] on tour with us."

At a Taylor Swift Concert? Time to Propose.

At the Eras tour, love takes center stage as couples orchestrate their own declarations of commitment against the backdrop of the star’s grand performances.

A diptych shot shows a marriage proposal in the crowd at a Taylor Swift concert, on the left, and a close-up photo of the couple displaying an engagement ring., on the right.

By Madison Malone Kircher

Madison Malone Kircher witnessed a proposal on Night 6 of the Eras Tour in Los Angeles. It made her cry just a little bit.

The twangy guitar picking begins and the crowd cheers. It’s time for “Love Story,” the ninth song on Taylor Swift’s Eras tour set list. Onstage, Ms. Swift strums her guitar and sings a modified Romeo and Juliet story, one with a happy ending that closes with Romeo on bended knee and Juliet picking out a wedding dress.

It’s a Swift classic that has taken on a new and literal meaning during the Eras tour, where some fans have used the musical moment to underscore their own love stories with meticulously planned marriage proposals right there in the stadium while Ms. Swift performs.

Megan Voo and Justin Chong are two such fans. The couple, who live in Melbourne, Australia, and met as architecture students at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2017, got engaged during one of Ms. Swift’s shows in their hometown earlier this year.

Ms. Voo, 26, was in complete shock when Mr. Chong, also 26, popped the question in February, mostly because she had no idea he was even at the concert in the first place. Ms. Voo attended with her sister, but, unbeknown to her, Mr. Chong had purchased a nearby seat to surprise her. (Ms. Voo’s sister was also in on the plan.)

Mr. Chong got to the concert early and made the people seated around him aware of his plan. They helped form a human shield to keep him hidden from Ms. Voo. When the moment came, they kindly stepped out of the way so he could make his way to Ms. Voo’s seat.

“When I dropped down and said, ‘Will you marry me?’ the first thing she said was ‘how did you get a ticket?,’” Mr. Chong said. He wore a ruffled shirt as a nod to the outfit Romeo wears in the “Love Story” music video and proposed with a ring from his mother.

And while the couple didn’t capture Ms. Swift’s attention, a number of nearby attendees filmed the proposal and several shared it on social media where it quickly went viral . “My friend congratulated us, saying ‘I saw your video.’ We hadn’t even announced! This was maybe two hours after the concert,” Ms. Voo said.

After the proposal, Mr. Chong didn’t return to his original seat. “I did ask everyone else. I said, ‘is it OK if I stay here with my fiancée?’” Everyone was standing for most of the show anyway, he added.

Brittany Litzenberger, 27, had a slight suspicion her boyfriend of nearly two years, Sloan Thomas, might propose at the Eras tour. While making friendship bracelets — Swifties trade them during shows — at a party at a friend’s apartment before the concert, she saw Mr. Thomas sneakily hand one off to her best friend who would be attending the show with them.

“He had sent me a few videos of people getting engaged at Eras and I was like, ‘oh, that’s so sweet. That would be like my dream,’” Ms. Litzenberger, a behavioral technician who lives in Kansas City, Mo, said.

Last July at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Ms. Litzenberger wore a purple sequined dress, which turned out to be the perfect outfit for what was about to happen.

@sloanthomas I asked my amazing girlfriend to marry me this weekend @Taylor Swift concert in kc #erastour #taylorswift #enchanted #erastourtaylorswift #speaknowtaylorsversion ♬ original sound - Sloan Thomas

“Love Story” came and went without Mr. Thomas proposing. But a few songs later, during Ms. Swift’s “Speak Now” set, the proposal happened . Ms. Swift took the stage in a purple dress and began to play “Enchanted,” a love song about meeting someone for the very first time. Around the first chorus, Mr. Thomas tapped Ms. Litzenberger on the shoulder and handed her the mysterious friendship bracelet.

Mr. Thomas’ song choice was particularly meaningful, Ms. Litzenberger said. “After our first date, I got in my car and plugged in my Spotify and shuffled my Taylor and ‘Enchanted’ played,” she said.

“The friendship bracelet that he gave me said, ‘marry me,’” Ms. Litzenberger said. “Then I turn around and he’s down. He got a purple ring box. She was singing in the background, the chorus, which was just perfect timing. Everybody around me is screaming. I’m crying.”

She had a hard time focusing on the next few songs, she said. “But in a good way, you know, it made everything really exciting.” (Ms. Litzenberger’s friend who hosted the bracelet making party also got engaged during the concert.)

Carmen Castillo also said she could not remember the song that played after her now-fiancé, Vernon Chamorro, proposed during “Love Story.”

@car_swiftness13 💍🫶🏼I got my love story moment at my first Taylor Swift concert. I almost died in the process….too many emotions. Her right there, him on one knee❤️ @Taylor Swift @Taylor Nation #tstheerastourtampa #tstheerastour #fyp #tampa #proposals #taylorswift ♬ original sound - Carmen’s Version 🦋🪩🌌

“He later told me he was afraid to propose at the Eras tour because he was afraid I was going to die of a heart attack because of all the emotions and excitement,” she said. The couple, who live in Barcelona, Spain, traveled to Tampa, Fla., in April 2023 to see Ms. Swift perform.

Ms. Castillo and Mr. Chamorro, who have been together for six years, have set a wedding date for Dec. 14 in Ms. Castillo’s home country of Nicaragua.

“I wanted it to be the 13, but that’s a Friday,” Ms. Castillo said, referencing Taylor Swift’s birthday.

Taylor Swift: Every Track 5 Song, Ranked From Worst To Best

  • Swift's track 5 songs are chosen for their emotional depth, vulnerability, and powerful storytelling.
  • Not all track 5s are created equal - some, like "All You Had To Do Was Stay," fall short in conveying true emotion.
  • The standout track 5, "All Too Well," remains a fan-favorite and showcases Swift's songwriting mastery.

Whether they're more fitting to the particular placement criteria or simply of higher quality, some of Taylor Swift 's 11 track 5 songs across her vast musical discography are better than others. With the release of what turned out to be a double album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology , Swift brought her career total albums to 11 (along with four re-recorded Taylor's Versions ). On every Taylor Swift album since her debut in 2006, the prolific artist has selected the most soul-baring song to occupy the fifth spot on the album's tracklist.

Although it's a completely deliberate practice now, Swift wasn't always aware of her tendency to make her track 5s sad songs . “ Track 5 is a tradition that really started with you guys ," Swift explained in an Instagram Live session one month before dropping Lover in 2019. " I didn’t realize I was doing this, but as I was making albums...instinctively I was putting a very vulnerable, personal, honest, emotional song as track 5 ." Swift has continued this sad track 5 trend for 18 years , though the tradition has generated some track 5s that are definitively more soul-baring than others.

Honorable Mention: Although "How Did It End?" is the fifth song on the second instalment of The Tortured Poets Department , since The Anthology is not considered a separate album but rather an extension of TTPD, it is not technically one of Swift's "track 5"s.

All You Had To Do Was Stay

Albums: 1989 (2014), 1989 (taylor's version) (2023).

The worst track 5 song in Taylor Swift's discography has to be "All You Had To Do Was Stay" from her fourth studio album, 1989 . On "All You Had To Do Was Stay," Swift reminds her returning lover that if they want her back, they shouldn't have left in the first place. It's meant to be an anthem about standing your ground and staying strong when an ex comes crawling back but the damage is already done, but ultimately, "All You Had To Do Was Stay" is just a middle-of-the-road song that fails to leave any lasting impression.

"Clean" would have made much more sense as a track 5, but "All You Had To Do Was Stay" just doesn't compare to the heavy hitters in its company in terms of overall quality.

It's rare for track 5 to be one of the most forgettable songs on its respective album, but "All You Had To Do Was Stay" fails to stand out on 1989. It's lyrically underwhelming and makes little sense as a track 5. 1989 is Swift's most consistently upbeat and positive album that's least defined by heartbreak, giving her slim pickings for a track 5 placement. "Clean" would have made much more sense as a track 5, but "All You Had To Do Was Stay" just doesn't compare to the heavy hitters in its company in terms of overall quality.

Every Taylor Swift Album The Popstar Actually Owns

Album: reputation (2017).

One of the two track 5 singles in Swift's discography, "Delicate" sees Swift ruminating on whether her current reputation will drive a prospective lover away. The song appears on her 2017 comeback album, Reputation, which was released after her public scandal with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West left her reputation in ruins.

Even though the lyrics are anxiety-ridden and vulnerable , "Delicate" is sonically deceiving and does not fit the mold of a track 5 enough to rank it any higher than second-to-last.

Like "All You Had To Do Was Stay," "Delicate" feels too upbeat and playful to be a track 5. Even though the lyrics are anxiety-ridden and vulnerable , "Delicate" is sonically deceiving and does not fit the mold of a track 5 enough to rank it any higher than second-to-last. Swift faced a similar problem with Reputation as she did with 1989 in that Reputation was predominantly revenge anthems and smitten love songs, so there weren't many that could work.

"Delicate" is unique in that it is the only track 5 about the beginning of a relationship in which she ponders what the future will bring, while most of Swift's track 5s see her reflecting on a relationship after it ends or looking inwards at her own journey. Points for originality, but "Delicate" still does not feel like a proper track 5.

Cold As You

Album: taylor swift (2006).

The track 5 that unintentionally started it all, "Cold As You" from Swift's self-titled debut album set the tone for every song with the same album placement to follow. On the inaugural track 5, Swift compares enduring her emotionally unavailable lover's icy demeanor to the coldest place she's ever visited. On her website , Swift described the song as capturing " that moment where you realize someone isn’t at all who you thought they were, and that you’ve been trying to make excuses for someone who doesn’t deserve them. "

"Cold As You" ranks higher than "All You Had To Do Was Stay" and "Delicate" because the lyrical content and overall tone are much more in line with what a track 5 should feel like.

Some of the best lyrics on Swift's debut album can be found on "Cold As You," particularly, " And you come away with a great little story/Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you. " "Cold As You" ranks higher than "AYHTDWS" and "Delicate" because the lyrical content and overall tone are much more in line with what a track 5 should feel like. Despite being a lyrical standout on the album, the more juvenile songwriting on "Cold As You" still isn't as refined as most of her later stuff , including the majority of her track 5s.

Why Taylor Swift Almost Completely Ignores Her Debut Album On The Eras Tour (Despite The Title)

White horse, albums: fearless (2008), fearless (taylor's version) (2021).

The only Grammy-winning track 5 (discounting the ten-minute version of "All Too Well," which is track 30 on Red (Taylor's Version) ), "White Horse" was the second single off Swift's sophomore album, Fearless . Serving as the flip side to Fearless' optimistic, happily-ever-after track 3, "Love Story," "White Horse" is about the fairytale illusion shattering as Swift realizes her prince charming isn't who she thought he was. She decides she deserves better and sets off to find someone " who might actually treat me well ."

The marginally hopeful ending keeps "White Horse" from being as earth-shattering as the best track 5s.

Just as a good track 5 should, "White Horse" spoils the fantasy that the album spent the first four songs constructing. Still, "White Horse" doesn't quite pack the same gut punch as other track 5s to rank it any higher. It's sad, sure, but the marginally hopeful ending keeps "White Horse" from being as earth-shattering as the best track 5s.

"White Horse" won Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards.

Album: Lover (2019)

After steering off course on 1989 and Reputation 's track 5s, Swift returned to form with "The Archer" on her seventh studio album Lover . "The Archer" also marked Swift's first track 5 that wasn't explicitly about a romantic relationship, old or new. Instead, on "The Archer," Swift confronts and unpacks her own neurosis and looks inward at her self-sabotaging behavior and harmful tendencies.

Ultimately, "The Archer" lands below the remaining track 5s because it feels stagnant.

Though this introspective examination features some of Swift's most creatively expressed lyrics, "The Archer" lands below the remaining track 5s because it feels stagnant. Although it picks up a bit on the pre-choruses, by never letting the beat drop, the unchanging production evokes the feeling of anxiety that she's describing in the song. This creative choice may have served a purpose in the song itself, but it prevents "The Archer" from encompassing the full range of soul-crushing emotion present in other track 5s.

You're On Your Own, Kid

Album: midnights (2022).

Featured as track 5 on Swift's 10th studio album, Midnights, "You're On Your Own, Kid" chronicles Swift's rise to fame by going right back to the beginning and tracing all the " blood, sweat, and tears " she put into pursuing her dreams. "You're On Your Own, Kid" serves as a reflection on her coming of age, as she looks back on how far she's come and all the pain she'd endured along the way.

"Your On Your Own, Kid" is definitely personal like a track 5 ought to be, but truthfully, there were more heartwrenching songs on the 3am Edition of Midnights that would have been better selections for track 5. Had they made the standard edition, songs like "Bigger Than the Whole Sky," "Would've Could've Should've," or even "Dear Reader" would have hit harder as track 5s.

"You're On Your Own, Kid" doesn't leave the listener emotionally wrecked, which is in many ways a good thing, but renders it less effective as a track 5.

Unlike most of Swift's track 5s, "You're On Your Own, Kid" ends on a wholly hopeful note , as Swift reassures herself that even though she's still on her own, she's " got no reason to be afraid " and " can face this ." It's a sweet, comforting conclusion, but one that doesn't fit as well in the track 5 canon. "You're On Your Own, Kid" doesn't leave the listener emotionally wrecked, which is in many ways a good thing, but renders it less effective as a track 5.

Why Taylor Swift Plays "Our Song" & "You're On Your Own, Kid" Twice In The Eras Tour Movie (Taylor's Version)

Tolerate it, album: evermore (2020).

A harrowing account of unreciprocated love, "tolerate it" describes an unhealthy relationship dynamic in which the younger partner is completely undervalued by the older one . The lyrics of Swift's "tolerate it" were inspired by the book Rebecca (1938) by Daphne du Maurier about a woman who marries an older, wealthy widower and realizes she'll never measure up to his titular dead wife, who is haunting their home.

Swift said she selected "tolerate It" as track 5 on Evermore because it "conveys such a specific kind of hurt."

Between the emotionally devastating lyrics and unintentionally off-putting yet striking production, "tolerate it" is one of the most crushing songs in Swift's whole catalog . Swift said she selected "tolerate it" as track 5 on Evermore because it " conveys such a specific kind of hurt ."

However, "tolerate it" loses points because of its detachment from Swift's personal experience. Although she related to the woman from Rebecca whose husband merely "tolerates" her love, "tolerate it" is a clear departure from the pure autobiographical nature of Swift's previous track 5s. Some of Swift's best work on Folklore and Evermore have been fictionalized stories, but when it comes to track 5s, this narrative distance interferes.

So Long, London

Album: the tortured poets department (2024).

The latest track 5 to join the club is "So Long, London," featured on Swift's 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. On "So Long, London," Swift bids farewell to the titular city and the lover she's leaving behind in it after trying to salvage their dying relationship with no reciprocated effort for too long.

Swift's vocal delivery on the verses compared to the bridge shows the range of her exasperation, transforming from deep, guttural, breathlessness to full-on screaming.

"So Long London" is one of the best songs on The Tortured Poets Department , which has the longest tracklist of any Swift album with 31 songs. Swift lays all her pain and frustrations bare on this heartbreaking ballad , presumed to be about Swift's breakup with her British actor Joe Alwyn, whom she lived with in London for many years. Swift's vocal delivery on the verses compared to the bridge shows the range of her exasperation, transforming from deep, guttural, breathlessness to full-on screaming. It may be the baby, but "So Long, London" has outdone many of Swift's previous track 5s.

7 The Tortured Poets Department Songs That Must Be Added To Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Albums: speak now (2010), speak now (taylor's version) (2023).

Described by Swift as " the last email you would ever send " to an ex-lover, Swift uses "Dear John" as an open letter to a much older man (widely believed to be fellow musician John Mayer) to call him out for severely mistreating and manipulating her when she was only 19 years old. At 6:45 on the re-recorded album, "Dear John" is Swift's longest track 5 by over a minute. The slow-burn ballad takes its time building up over the first four minutes before exploding on the bridge just like the figurative " fireworks " over the titular John's " sad empty town ."

Swift's wise, brilliantly articulated perspective showed immense maturity in both her songwriting and as a person, while simultaneously making the point that she was "too young to be messed with."

Before "my tears ricochet" from Folklore was released in 2020, "Dear John" was the only track 5 Swift had written entirely herself . Swift's wise, brilliantly articulated perspective showed immense maturity in both her songwriting and as a person, while simultaneously making the point that she was " too young to be messed with. " This was her first truly great track 5 that has continued to earn its spot in the top 3.

A "Dear John" letter is a type of letter a man's romantic partner would write to inform him that their relationship is over.

My Tears Ricochet

Album: folklore (2020).

On Instagram , Swift described "my tears ricochet" as a tale of " an embittered tormentor showing up at the funeral of his fallen object of obsession. " In reality, the song is an extended metaphor for Swift's masters dispute, which led to the destruction of her 15-year friendship and professional relationship with the founder of her former record label, Scott Borchetta. The context adds a layer of tragedy, but this ballad about a sudden, life-altering betrayal is still powerful enough in itself.

"My tears ricochet" was the first song Swift wrote for Folklore, setting the sonic and thematic tone for the rest of her Grammy-winning, career-defining eighth studio album. Ultimately, "my tears ricochet" earns the second spot on the ranking because it was practically born to be a track 5 from the beginning.

Swift acknowledged that while "picking a track 5 is sort of a pressurized decision," she "knew from day one that ["my tears ricochet"] was probably going to be it."

In Swift's concert documentary , Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, on Disney+, Swift and producer and co-writer Jack Antonoff concurred that "my tears ricochet" was one of the saddest songs on the album , which earned it track 5 status. Swift acknowledged that while " picking a track 5 is sort of a pressurized decision," she "knew from day one that ["my tears ricochet"] was probably going to be it ."

All Too Well

Albums: red (2012), red (taylor's version) (2021).

Arguably Swift's most famous and quintessential track 5 , "All Too Well" was released on Swift's fourth studio album Red, and quickly became a fan-favorite. On "All Too Well," Swift reflects on a failed relationship that left her emotionally destroyed. She recalls specific, expository details from that time to evoke vivid imagery and paint a full picture of their relationship, including the agonizing aftermath.

"All Too Well" was already considered an unparalleled feat in storytelling for Swift and a songwriting masterpiece before the extended cut was released from the vault.

"All Too Well" is widely believed to be about Swift's relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010-2011, when she was 20-21 and he was 29-30. New lyrics on the 10-minute version about a significant age gap and missing Swift's 21st birthday further supported this claim.

Like "my tears ricochet," "All Too Well" was the first song Swift wrote for Red and was 10 minutes long before she shortened it to five-and-a-half minutes for the album. Swift finally shared the 10-minute extended cut on Red (Taylor's Version) in 2021, but "All Too Well" was already considered an unparalleled feat in storytelling for Swift and a songwriting masterpiece before the extended cut was released from the vault.

What Taylor Swift's All Too Well 10 Minute Version Lyrics Mean

As far as crowning the top track 5 in Swift's discography, "All Too Well" is a no-brainer. Not only is it the best of the eleven songs with this notable tracklist placement, "All Too Well" is considered by many to be Swift's best work to date. Though the ten-minute version overshadowed it and took its place as Swift's magnum opus, the original "All Too Well" remains track 5 on both versions of Red and no other song in Taylor Swift 's discography has managed to beat it just yet, regardless of their tracklist placement.

Finally, the Answer to What Red Lipstick Taylor Swift Is Always Wearing

Taylor Swift red lipstick has been revealed

There is but one lingering question that comes to mind post-Taylor Swift's NFL appearances (besides, um, "Anyone else also alarmingly invested in this Travis Kelce thing?"), and that is about her red lipstick . Google searches for the exact hue she wears are reportedly up 669 percent since she was first spotted at the Kansas City Chiefs game at the start of the season — and fan tweets are alive and well, from the "not me wearing red lipstick again" to the "TAYLOR IF YOU DON'T RELEASE A RED LIPSTICK LINE IN MY LIFETIME ILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU" — which can only confirm one thing: the people want answers.

It's a happy coincidence that the Chiefs's signature color is red, supplying Swift with ample opportunities to wear the bold shade while hanging in a box with Kelce's mom, just as she did for the Super Bowl on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas.

The more complicated reality is that Swift has been wearing red lipstick since the moment she hit the music scene — the one constant in this ever-changing world, if you will — meaning she's had a number of favorites on rotation over the years. There's MAC Ruby Woo ($20, originally $23), the classic shade she confirmed she loved to People in 2015. There's also the Nars Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl ($26, originally $30), which has been a staple for the star for years.

Main Image

These days, according to her most recent makeup artist, the one and only Pat McGrath , the star has been wearing the LiquiLust Legendary Wear Matte Lipstick ($34) and the MatteTrance Lipstick ($39) from her eponymous brand, Pat McGrath Labs. The shade, should you be interested, is Elson. The formula is also editor-approved and promises to be smudgeproof, which, if you've been watching video footage of that "Tayvis" kiss in Argentina on repeat (and let's be real: who isn't?) you'll know this fact is of the upmost importance.

Main Image

Otherwise, in the past Swift's longtime makeup artist Lorrie Turk has also shared a handful of red lipstick favorites that could be a good indicator of what she uses on a regular basis, including, but not limited to: Patrick Ta Major Beauty Headlines Lipstick in That's Why She's Late ($32), Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Color in Uncensored ($29), and Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lipstick in Velvet Ribbon ($36).

Main Image

As with most things the singer touches, there's also plenty of online fodder and speculation from fans on whether her her lipstick of choice gives a nod to her best friend Selena Gomez's beauty line, Rare Beauty . The punchy, cool-toned red and matte finish of the Rare Beauty Lip Soufflé Matte Cream Lipstick in Inspire ($20) looks like it could be a spot-on match, so it's certainly a contender.

Main Image

Only time will tell which of the above lipstick(s) was used during her date nights with Sophie Turner and, ahem, others. In the meantime, we'll be sipping our caramel nonfat latte from Starbucks in a black turtleneck, patiently waiting.

At 2025 Grammys, Will Taylor Swift Land Her Seventh Album of the Year Nod?

If both Beyoncé and Swift are nominated, this will be the second time the two superstars have faced off in this category.

Taylor Swift

Now that Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department has entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 and smashed sales records , thoughts turn to its next big test – how it will fare with Grammy voters.

Nine Milestones Beyoncé Could Reach at 2025 Grammys

Trending on billboard.

Paul McCartney is the leader with nine album of the year nods – five with The Beatles, one ( Band on the Run ) with Paul McCartney & Wings and three as a solo artist.

Frank Sinatra and George Harrison are next in line with eight album of the year nods. Sinatra scored with seven solo albums and one collab , Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim . Harrison scored with five Beatles albums; a solo album ( All Things Must Pass) ; an all-star live album, The Concert for Bangla Desh , which was credited to George Harrison & Friends; and a Traveling Wilburys album ( Volume One ) on which he teamed with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

Paul Simon follows with seven album of the year nods –- two with Simon & Garfunkel ( Bookends and Bridge Over Troubled Water ) and five on his own. Swift, if nominated, would pull into a tie with Simon for third place.

If Tortured Poets is nominated, Swift will become the first artist to receive album of the year nominations with four consecutive official solo studio LPs since Kendrick Lamar (Swift’s colleague on “Bad Blood,” a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100) scored with good kid, m.A.A.d city, To Pimp a Butterfly, DAMN. and Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. The last artist before Lamar to achieve this feat was Billy Joel , who scored with 52nd Street , Glass Houses , The Nylon Curtain and An Innocent Man .

It’s of course way too early to know with any certainty if Swift will be nominated. Compared to Swift’s recent releases, the new album has drawn somewhat mixed reviews. The album has a 76 rating on Metacritic.com, the review aggregation site. That’s a bit below the marks registered by her four previous studio albums (excluding Taylor’s Version albums). Lover had a 79, folklore an 88, and evermore and Midnight s, both an 85. (An expanded version of the new album, dubbed The Anthology , has a lower rating, 69.)

Billboard ’s Jason Lipshutz took stock of Swift’s album in a thoughtful review headlined, “Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Is Messy, Unguarded and Undeniably Triumphant: Critic’s Take.” Here are the first four paragraphs from Lipshutz’s review, which posted on April 19, the day the album was released.

“Time and again, Swift has identified artistic opportunities that other stars would have blanched at (or at the very least, set aside for a different time, so as to not muck up any professional momentum), and she has leapt into them fearlessly, always coming out on top.

“So right now — in the middle of a mega-selling stadium tour, after a record-breaking fourth album of the year Grammy win, in a high-profile new romance and at the commercial zenith of an already all-time career — is, naturally, the time Swift has chosen to release a knowingly messy, wildly unguarded breakup album.

“She didn’t have to do this!  But then again, making an album like  The Tortured Poets Department  is exactly what separates Swift from her more careful peers. Challenging herself to shape-shift, to accomplish something new at the moment anyone else would rest on their laurels, is what makes her so fascinating.”

Other albums that are seen as front-runners for album of the year nominations include Beyoncé ‘s Cowboy Carter , Ariana Grande ’s Eternal Sunshine and Bad Bunny ’s Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Manana . Upcoming albums that are seen as likely prospects include Dua Lipa ’s Radical Optimism (due May 3) and Billie Eilish ’s Hurt Me Hard & Soft (due May 17). The eligibility period ends Sept. 15.

If both Beyoncé and Swift are nominated, this will be the second time the two superstars have faced off in this category. In 2010, Swift’s Fearless beat Bey’s I Am…Sasha Fierce .

It would probably be better for Swift if she lost the big one and was seen leading the cheers for Beyoncé. If that does happen – and at this moment, it seems the likeliest scenario – this would be the third time in Grammy history that there has been a reversal of fortune in the top category, where there was a different outcome in a rematch.

At the first Grammy Awards in May 1959, Henry Mancini won album of the year for  The   Music From Peter Gunn , his jazzy score to the TV detective series of the same name. It beat a pair of Frank Sinatra albums,  Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely  and  Come Fly With Me . (Did the double nominations cause Sinatra to “split his votes”? We’ll never know for sure, but the rules have since been changed so that an artist can be nominated with only one album as the lead artist in any one year.)

Mancini and Sinatra competed again at the second Grammy Awards in November 1959 (yes, there were two ceremonies that year) with the opposite result. Sinatra’s  Come Dance With Me!  beat More Music From Peter Gunn , a sequel to Mancini’s album.

Swift co-produced her new album with Jack Antonoff , Aaron Dessner and Patrik Berger. Antonoff has been nominated for producer of the year, non-classical the last five years running – and has won the last three years in a row.

If Antonoff is nominated again this year, he’ll be the first producer or production team to be nominated six years in a row since Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis , who were nominated each year from 2001-2006. Moreover, if he is nominated again, Antonoff will become one of just five producers or production teams to land six or more producer of the year nods (whether consecutive or nod). He will join Jam & Lewis (11 total nods), Quincy Jones (eight), David Foster (eight) and Babyface (six).

If Antonoff wins in that category again early next year, he’ll become the first producer to ever win four years in a row. Babyface is the only producer to win four times – in 1993 (with L.A. Reid) and then on his own from 1996-98.
