Summer Of ’96

Unlike Bryan Adams, I didn’t have the chance to experience the summer of 1969 but I do remember the summer of 1996 as if it was yesterday… Starting her sold-out titanic Wildest Dreams World Tour with 3 shows in Bercy (3 more would be added later in September) Paris in May, Tina was everywhere, with a hot single, a brand new successful album, and a breathtaking look. And like this year, it was a hot summer and a memorable one.

FRANCE-TINA TUNER

On June 25, 1996 , Tina performed in the small eastern city of Nancy, France, only a couple of kilometers of where I was growing up. One of the biggest concert ever given in the local Zenith, attracting more than 25.000 fans from all over Europe. On June 25, 1996, I was flying for the first to the USA with my family… The irony of the situation has never left me but I have no regrets since I had already seen Tina and would see her again many times after that…

Screen Shot 2018-07-21 at 21.04.19

Today, July 21st, 2018 marks the 22nd anniversary of Tina’s concerts at the legendary Wembley Stadium in London! Performing for two nights in front of a mesmerized crowd, the show offered by the Queen of Rock to her massive audience was simply perfect from start to finish. The songs, the voice, the costumes, the energy, the stage… in my opinion the epitome of Tina’s live performances.

So in order to celebrate this memorable tour and more particularly this special concert, here’s a selection of songs Tina performed in London during that tour. Nothing special in terms of setlist (‘a good show is a good show everywhere’) but a fantastic radio broadcast with awesome vocals directly taken from the soundboard. The type of bootlegs you wish you had more! Enjoy the songs but most of all, I wish you all a peaceful summer! ☀️☀️☀️

26 Replies to “Summer Of ’96”

Great article! The 1st concert I ever attended in my life was the Wildest Dreams concert in Dublin on the 28th June 1996. Where have the years gone? I was 14 at the time.

I was lucky enough to also see Tina at Alton Towers a few weeks later. This was an interesting show, as the stage was very bare, with a basic lighting system, and the goldeneye was simply painted on to a large curtain at the back of the stage. Tina just walked out from behind the drum kit at the start of Goldeneye, instead of being lifted down by the platform. There was no Nutbush ‘surfboard’ either.

The week after that, I remember recording the Wembley show from the radio as it was broadcast on UK Radio 1. My tape was worn out years ago! I have great memories of summer ’96. Thankyou for reminding me of them.

Thanks for sharing your memories James, we are about the same age and I don’t know where the years have gone either haha. Intersting storie about the Alton Tower show, I don’t remember seeing any pictures of this particular concert! Digging mode actiuvate! Thanks for commenting!

If you ever find and pictures of the Alton Towers show, you must post them! I’ve tried for years, but never found any. Oh, how I wish I had taken a camera to that show! At the time, I was sad that I didn’t get to see the proper Wildest Dreams stage up close (we were only a few rows from the front), but looking back, I feel happy that I got to see just Tina, her dancers and her band with no big production show. It was unusual at that time of her career!

Thanks Benji Your energy and enthusiasm helps keeps her magic alive for me. You are one of only 3 music bloggers I follow. Keep it up!!! Drew from Sydney (I will see u in Amsterdam to buy u dinner and many drinks)

Arf thank you so much Drew, really wish I could do more but not always easy to mix my professional life and the blog but I keep on doing it for people like you who enjoys it and I really appreciate the feedback! Can’t wait for a drink in AMS or anywhere! Best! Ben

Tu me manque Riri❤

As always, thanks for sharing. I have been a fan ever since I was 14, I’m in my 50’s now and still a fan. You are the best blogger yet, keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot for your kind words Msb! Best!

Thanks Ben and enjoy your summer break

Thanks David, summer break will come in September in Nutbush! 😀

I was 6 months pregnant with my youngest son when we went to the wildest dreams concert at Wembley stadium it was a hot day we waited ages to see my favourite singer Tina Turner she was brilliant the crowd was singing to all of her songs

Tell me your son grew up to be the biggest TINA fan in the UK!? 😅 Great memories, thanks for sharing Shirley!

O meu sonho é conhecer Tina Turner

elle est aussi venue cette année là à Lyon Halle Tony Garnier et ce fut magnifique et inoubliable

This was the last time she was touring Spain and, I wasn’t able to go to Barcelona to see her! 😢. I had to go to the Gelredome in march 2009 to see my first and my last Tina’s concert!😊

Haha poor Carlos… But! One TINA concert is better than no TINA concert and worth a thousand time seeing another artist 😉

Thank you for the fond reminders of Tina at another career high point. Are there mp3s of the songs you posted? And thank you for all your hard work and time to keep us updated on the Queen!

Tina Turner Turns It Up On Her 1997 ‘Wildest Dreams’ Tour

A vintage look back at Tina Turner's grueling but wildly successful 1996-1997 'Wildest Dreams' tour.

By Clive Young ⋅

A vintage look back at Tina Turner’s grueling but wildly successful 1996-1997 ‘Wildest Dreams’ tour.

Dave Natale, seen here August 1, 1997 at Jones Beach Amphitheater in Wantagh, NY, first mixed Tina Turner in 1985 and subsequently became her FOH engineer for decades.

This article appeared in the October 1997 issue of Pro Sound News , covering the end of the 18-month-long Tina Turner “Wildest Dreams” tour.

New York (October, 1997)—By August, everyone on the Tina Turner tour was looking forward to some time off. Having started 18 months earlier in March, 1996, the production arrived in New York some 300-plus shows later with a mere eight performances left; going home was a popular topic of conversation.

“Everyone’s ready to stop–even Tina’s ready. She toured last year for 10 months and had one week off in that time,” remarked Chad Shreiner, system engineer for the Clair Bros. rig with which Turner was traveling. He, system tech Kirk Shreiner and FOH engineer Dave Natale were the only members of the six-man sound crew to do the entire tour. Natale, who’s been Turner’s FOH engineer since 1985, repeatedly characterized Turner as “a traditionalist” and the same could be said for his own approach to mixing; for instance, there was little in the way of effects at the FOH position. “See, I actually mix ,” he said, wryly. “I push the faders up and down, like, a lot during the show. I do it myself, it makes it more interesting. Plus I think I’m a better limiter than any box anyway.”

Following similarly in that traditionalist vein, Natale noted that he had used the same makes of microphones for the last 15 years (“no point in changing unless there’s something worth changing to.”). Not that he’s against change however—for instance, he added a “new” box to his set up a few years ago: “I run Tina’s voice through the Manley, which is an excellent limiter. You can’t hear it—just like a limiter should work. Tina’s vocal gets no Harmonizer, and reverb only if it’s exceptionally dry. She’s got a really good voice, so I don’t have to do anything to it.”

When the reverb is used, it’s also used in a straight-ahead fashion. “I’m not much for using different reverbs on different instruments,” said Natale, “because this is supposed to sound like it’s live. Everything has the same reverb on it, so it sounds like the band’s all playing in the same place at the same time.”

One of the things Natale had to contend with was a powerful stage sound created by a slew of sidefills and 40 monitor wedges–18 across the front of the stage just for Turner alone. Despite all those boxes, monitor engineer Ed Dracoules didn’t think the stage sound was that unusual, describing it as “Loud—same as most bands I work with.” Natale simply saw the stage level as something that just had to be dealt with, noting, “Tina needs to hear herself before she can sing anything into the PA–which is what I care about. I just EQ around it. Instead of going through a big song and dance about the wedges, it’s easier to just pull the vocal fader up and down a little bit every now and then.”

Tina Turner Rio ’88: Anatomy of a Great Remote

With all the boxes on stage and the fact that the show was all singing and dancing, it was almost surprising that personal monitor systems weren’t used, if only to get wedges out the audience’s view of Turner’s shuffling feet. Shreiner explained, “Only the percussion/sax player is using personal monitors and he has a Clair Brothers system. It doesn’t get quite as loud as the other ones, but it’s very clean. We tried to give them to Tina, but she’s from the old school. She wanted to see boxes pointed at her, plus she has a lot of costume changes where she has to get back on stage fast, so they’d get in the way.”

Regardless of the stage sound, the PA often got turned up pretty high, too. “Tina likes the show to be powerful, so it gets as loud as it can,” Natale explained. Pushing the sound to the wall would be right in line with the rest of the show, however, which was a strong mix of over-the-top spectacle and performance, even with only eight shows left. As Shreiner pointed out, “She gives 120 percent every night, whether it’s a good audience or not. She still treats it like it’s the first show of the tour.”

All About Morgan Wallen's Parents, Tommy and Lesli Wallen

Morgan Wallen was raised in Tennessee by music-loving parents

tina tour 1996

Morgan Wallen 's parents, Tommy and Lesli Wallen, helped their son achieve country music success.

Tommy and Lesli wed in 1991 and went on to welcome four children, son Morgan and daughters Ashlyne, Mikaela and Lacey. The Wallen siblings were raised by Tommy, a preacher, and Lesli, an elementary school teacher, in the rural town of Sneedville, Tenn. The family later moved to Knoxville, where the three elder siblings attended high school.

Music was a mainstay in the Wallen household and Morgan’s family believed in his big dreams. "They never held me back, and they never made me feel crazy at all for doing this," he told The Boot in 2018. "That's been a blessing.”

Throughout the many highs and lows Morgan has experienced since breaking into the country music world in 2014, his parents have been by his side.

"Life is a crazy thing. I wouldn’t be anywhere without you both and the sacrifices you’ve made. I love you both so much,” Morgan wrote on Instagram after his parents joined him for a 2019 appearance on the Today show.

Here's everything to know about Morgan Wallen’s parents, Tommy and Lesli Wallen.

They have been married for over 30 years

Morgan Wallen Instagram

Tommy and Lesli met in 1978 and tied the knot on Aug. 3, 1991.

“A beautiful story with 2 beautiful people. Never change you two,” Morgan wrote on Instagram to honor his parent’s 25th wedding anniversary in 2016. “The biggest influences in my life and I would be nothing without em both (literally and figuratively lol). Dad, I'm kinda mad I never known you with the mullet and stache. Mom, you're just as pretty today as you were on your wedding day. I love you both dearly.”

Morgan has opened up about how he wishes he could have the same love story as his parents, especially as he co-parents his son Indigo Wilder with his ex-girlfriend, Katie "KT" Smith .

“ I wanted to have a family like my parents . My parents are still together, you know,” he told PEOPLE in 2021. “They raised [me and my sisters] together. That was my idea of what my life would look like. That's not the way it turned out."

They raised their kids in rural Tennessee before moving to Knoxville

Ashlyne Wallen Instagram

Tommy and Lesli’s oldest child and only son is Morgan, born in May 1993. They welcomed daughters Ashlyne and Mikaela in January 1995 and September 1996, respectively. The trio was raised in Sneedville, where Tommy was a church pastor and Lesli was a teacher.

The Wallens later relocated to Knoxville, Tenn., where Morgan, Ashlyne and Mikaela attended high school. Lacey joined the family through foster care and was formally adopted by the Wallens in 2021.

Lesli retired from teaching in June 2023, writing on Instagram that she was “not done,” just “taking a little break then career number 2!”

Though Morgan’s touring schedule takes him all over the world, he relishes stops in Tennessee, telling The Boot , "It's always good to get back home and see the people you love and get to spend time with your family on top of playing your music.”

Morgan dedicated a song to his mom

The country music star has a slew of hit songs, including “Whiskey Glasses,” “Last Night” and “You Proof,” and one of his biggest, "Thought You Should Know,” is dedicated to his mom.

Released in May 2022, the song is a direct address to Morgan’s mom thanking her for her care and love over the years.

“This one’s for you mama. I know it didn’t always seem like those prayers were getting through. I Hope this song is a testament to the fact that they did,” Morgan wrote on Instagram .

The accompanying music video featured home videos of Morgan and Lesli interspersed with what appeared to be Morgan singing the song in an empty room, only to later reveal that Lesli was there for the performance. At the end of the video, the two share a sweet hug.

Co-written with Miranda Lambert and Nicolle Galyon , “Thought You Should Know” became Lambert's first No. 1 hit as a songwriter. The “Tin Man” singer posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was “proud to be a writer on a song about your mama!"

They are grandparents

Tommy and Lesli have three grandchildren, with one more on the way.

In addition to Morgan’s son, Indigo, Mikaela has two daughters — she welcomed Haven Rose on July 7, 2015, and Kehlani Lauren on Jan. 5, 2023. Ashlyne is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Skylor Morton, in the summer of 2024.

Morgan wants to raise his son with the same values his parents shared with him.

"I just hope to give him as sound advice as my parents gave me and show him love and let him know that I'm here for him and that I'm his friend," he told PEOPLE in 2021. "I'm here to help, and I'm here to guide. I'm just gonna try to do the best I can."

Morgan's famous mullet paid homage to his dad

Though Morgan has since chopped off his famous mullet, the roots of the haircut dug deep.

“ When my dad was my age , he had a mullet, and I wanted to try it,” Morgan told PEOPLE in 2019. “I went back home to my parents’ house for a holiday, and I ended up looking at photo albums, just trying to take a trip down memory lane. When they got married, my dad had a mullet. Me and my dad are very similar people — he’s one of my best friends — so I was like, ‘Man, if Dad could do it, I will do it.' ”

The mullet-and-mustache combo became his signature look, but during his August 2023 show in Columbus, Ohio, Morgan revealed a bald head and upper lip . In a fan-captured TikTok video , the Tennessee-born artist can be heard telling the crowd, “Before we get any further, I didn’t like my long hair anymore, so I shaved it off."

Music was always a part of the Wallen household

Music was a constant in the Wallen family home. Morgan told The Nash News that “everything was music” for his mom, including how she taught her kids the 50 states. The performer and his siblings sang in the church choir and Lesli signed Morgan up for The Voice , which he appeared on in 2014.

“My mom recognized that I was musical even at a young age,” Morgan told Nashville Lifestyles in 2021. “She said I asked for a violin when I was five years old for Christmas and that’s what they got me.”

During a 2022 Nashville concert, Morgan told the crowd he would write songs on the workout bench in his parents’ garage.

“I’d write a song then go in while my momma was cookin’ dinner or something and play it for her,” he said onstage, per his website . “I have to give my mom credit, she didn’t always tell me I was good, which I appreciated.”

Morgan has made singing a family affair. His sister, Ashlyne, sings harmony on “Outlook,” a track off 2023’s One Thing at a Time .

“We’ve always been super, super tight. We grew up in church singing hymns and stuff and learning how to harmonize with each other and sing three-part harmony,” Morgan told Billboard in 2023.

They support their son

Lesli frequently posts photos from Morgan’s gigs and both she and Tommy have been spotted cheering their son on at live shows.

Morgan's mom is also known to share headlines on her Instagram like when Morgan became the first artist with three songs simultaneously on Billboard ’s Hot Country Songs chart in 2022. Lesli also shared a video of herself watching her son be named male artist of the year at the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards .

“We are so proud of you! You deserved it and much much more! We love you!!” Lesli wrote on the ACM post.

Morgan’s parents have also joined him for red carpet events. Lesli was Morgan's date to the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, and both she and Tommy were in attendance for the 15th Annual Academy of Country Music Honors in Nashville that same year.

Morgan is just as proud of his parents as they are of him. He shared a video of himself on Facebook , introducing his parents to the crowd and blowing them a kiss during a February 2019 performance in New York City. Morgan described the experience as “one of the coolest moments of my life so far.”

They received an apology from their son after Morgan’s controversies

In February 2021, Morgan was caught on video returning to his home after a night out, where he used a racist slur to describe one of his companions. After the clip was obtained by TMZ , the fallout included the suspension of Morgan's record label contract , removal of his songs from radio airplay and disqualification from the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards .

Shortly after the scandal, Morgan posted an apology . He later checked into a 30-day rehab center in San Diego and donated approximately $500,000 to organizations, including the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC).

”I let so many people down. I let my parents down, and they're the furthest thing from the person in that video. I let my son down, and I'm not okay with that,” he wrote in his apology .

Morgan had previously faced two controversies in 2020. In May, he was arrested in Nashville on public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges. Then in October, Saturday Night Live rescinded their invitation for Morgan to perform after he broke COVID-19 protocols by attending a crowded party . In an Instagram apology video, he called his behavior “short-sighted," per Entertainment Tonight .

The country singer was invited back to the show in December 2020 and starred in a sketch with host Jason Bateman that spoofed his partying .

Most recently, Morgan was arrested on three felony charges after allegedly throwing a chair off the roof of a six-story bar on Broadway in Nashville on April 7, 2024. He is due in court in Nashville on May 3 for "settlement."

Morgan’s parents have stood by his side through everything, with Lesli sharing numerous supportive social media posts. “I love this imperfect human so much,” she captioned a Billboard photo of Morgan in February 2021.
