Tom Cruise Explained How An Iconic ‘Mission: Impossible’ Shot Almost Never Happened

Ryan Nagelhout

Tom Cruise’s willingness to do crazy things for stunts is well-known at this point. Stories of him trying to film Mission: Impossible alone have made it clear that the man is dedicated to getting the shot that fits the outlandish and visually-demanding scripts from Christopher McQuarrie. And according to a newly-uncovered discussion about the first Mission: Impossible , it seems an ingenious solution was necessary to make one of the most iconic scenes in the series’ history a reality.

As The Hollywood Reporter detailed , Cruise was having a terrible time filming the infamous “close call” scene in the film where he’s suspended from a wire in an all-white secure room. With a computer disc in his teeth and sweat pouring from his face, the high-wire act is a near-silent set piece that’s instantly-recognizable 25 years later.

The moment is as harrowing as it is visually stunning. The rat in the air vents might be scary, sure, but mostly the idea of slamming face-first into a floor seems pretty painful even before FBI security would haul you away if alarms went off. Actually getting the shot, however, involved some spare English coinage and a bit of fun on the part of director Brian De Palma. According to the anniversary edition of the movie’s Blu-Ray, Cruise actually did slam his face on the ground quite a bit before they got it all right.

“We were running out of time, and I kept hitting my face and the take didn’t work,” the actor said, explaining he finally asked crewmembers for British pound coins to put in his shoes as counterweights. “[Director] Brian [De Palma] said, ‘One more and then I am going to have to cut [into the moment] and do it,’” Cruise said. “I said, ‘I can do it.’ And I went down to the floor, and I didn’t touch. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, my gosh. I didn’t touch.’ And I was holding it, holding it, holding it, holding it. And I’m sweating and I’m sweating. And he just keeps rolling.” Cruise said he realized in that moment that they got the shot and De Palma was now just messing with him. Finally, De Palma began to laugh and called cut.

It’s really fascinating to know these details watching the scene again all these years later, as Cruise’s reaction to not hitting the ground seems that much more genuine. The shot De Palma uses certainly lingers on Cruise’s dangling body, his arms and legs desperately reaching away from the floor to make sure the take was useable. Imagining him holding that pose, only to have De Palma mess with him perhaps longer than we’ve seen on screen, is pretty funny. Simply put, though, that scene without that visual of Cruise bouncing just shy of the floor pretty obviously would not hold the same place in the series’ lore today.

And though there’s no sign of the English pounds used to apparently keep Cruise off the ground, they get a notable place in film history as the unsung heroes that made movie magic possible.

  • Trivia While filming the famous scene where Tom Cruise drops from the ceiling and hovers inches above the ground, Cruise's head kept hitting the floor until he got the idea to put coins in his shoes for balance.
  • Goofs Although some would consider a computer room equipped with the three high-tech security systems, meant to prevent any intrusion, as missing the "most basic security measure" of video surveillance, video surveillance is often not permitted in highly classified areas where there is a risk that unauthorized personnel - such as the security personnel - may see the material. The security personnel may theoretically be cleared for that classification but they would not have a "need to know" the information contained within AND video surveillance visible in another area would defy the measures taken to keep the information in a secure room. However, a simple device to lock out the keyboard, of any other I/O devices or ports, when there was no authorised operator officially present, would be simple to implement, very efficient, and pose zero potential for information leakage.

How to Dress Like Tom Cruise in ‘Mission Impossible’

IMF agent Ethan Hunt may play it fast and loose on missions, but his clothing is always on point.

tom cruise mission impossible boots

The key to being a good movie spy is fitting in no matter the surroundings, so it makes sense that the key to good movie spy style is looking good no matter the sartorial situation. The ability to look good in a variety of outfits is a big part of what makes movie spies like Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise ‘s character in the Mission Impossible films, fashion icons.

Over 22 years and six films, including the soon-to-be-released Mission Impossible: Fallout , Cruise has rocked suits, tactical gear, tuxedos, and plenty of leather jackets while playing Hunt. As one of the best-dressed characters in one of the most successful franchises in movie history, Hunt’s style should inspire all guys who want to look their best. The fact that Cruise is 56 with three kids means that dads in particular should take notice.

Here are some of our favorite pieces from the recent Mission Impossible films that can up any dad’s style game.

The Hooded Leather Jacket from Ghost Protocol

tom cruise mission impossible boots

Hunt’s hooded silhouette has become a recurring image over the past few Mission Impossible films, and this jacket is a sterling example. The hood, which helped keep the Impossible Mission Force’s leader incognito as he slipped in and out of dangerous situations, will also help keep you warm and dry on late night diaper runs.

The Persol Sunglasses from Ghost Protocol

These classic Persol shades worn by Tom Cruise in Ghost Protocol kept the sun (and sand) out of his eyes when he was sprinting around Dubai. But their classic silhouette works well during any moment. These, after all, come from the brand who gave Steve McQueen his effortless cool.

The Tudor Heritage Chrono Watch from Ghost Protocol

A great watch is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Cruise rocks this one with white pants and a dark button down, but it would look just as great with a suit or tuxedo. At nearly five grand, it’s definitely an investment, but if you’re in the market for a quality timepiece you could do a lot worse for a lot more money.

The Tacky Shirt from Rogue Nation

tom cruise mission impossible boots

The costume designer made this shirt Cruise wears from fabric she found in east London, so unfortunately you won’t be able to wear the exact shirt. Nevertheless, the lesson is clear: if worn with confidence (and a great pair of dark pants), nicely patterned floral shirt can do wonders. We dig this one from H&M.

The Grey Suit from Rogue Nation

The suit, worn by Cruise as he clings to that airplane in the beginning of Rogue One, was custom-made with reinforced seams that could withstand such intense wind. This Armani suit is a close copy. Just know that it will likely rip if you spend time hanging from a fuselage.

The Leather Jacket from Rogue Nation

This jacket, which Cruise wears for the majority of Rogue Nation , is all about the texture. Purposely textured to appear as though it has wrinkles, the jacket, made by Barney’s has a well-worn, timeless feel.

How Tom Cruise’s Foot Injury Actually Helped Mission: Impossible Fallout

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Tom Cruise is known for his desire to do his own stunts on film, but that dedication resulted in a broken ankle on the set of Mission: Impossible - Fallout . While the injury delayed production for several weeks, it turns out that it was something of a blessing in disguise. Director Christopher McQuarrie says that the forced production stop gave the movie a chance to take another look at the script and fix a few issues they might not otherwise have had the time to do. According to McQuarrie...

What the ankle did was allow us to figure out the holes in the script that we were still struggling with. And so, we didn't rewrite the script to accommodate the ankle, but we finished the script because the ankle gave us the time.

CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell spoke with director Christopher McQuarrie last week in Paris as part of the World Premiere of Mission: Impossible - Fallout and asked about how the production coped with Tom Cruise being out of commission with a broken ankle . The actor was filming a leap from one rooftop to another when a bad landing resulted in the actor spending several weeks on the shelf.

However, rather than simply sit around waiting for their lead actor to be ready to get in front of a camera, Christopher McQuarrie took the forced downtime to make sure everything else with the film was working properly. As it turned out, not everything was. There were some issues with the script itself that the production had apparently not been able to deal with, but the filming delay gave McQuarrie and his team the chance they needed to go back and try to work through the issues.

Powered by RedCircle

It seems that they were successful, as Mission: Impossible - Fallout has received rave reviews across the board, something that may not have happened if the script had "holes" in it before the injury took place. Currently, review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes is giving Fallout a 93% positive rating, a score on par with the previous two entries in the franchise, which rank among Tom Cruise's best reviewed movies.

In that regard, it does seem like there were some positive results from what likely felt, at the time, like a minor disaster. Between the film production delay, the insurance issues that likely resulted, and, you know, the fact that a guy broke bones, there probably weren't a lot of people seeing a bright side at the time.

The rest of the world will finally get to see the results of the extra script polishing when Mission: Impossible - Fallout hits theaters next week, You can see Christopher McQuarrie talk about the situation with Sean in the video below.

Was Tom Cruise Inspiration For Next-Gen Climbing Shoe Rubber?

“Can you make a shoe that will climb on glass?” That question came three years ago on a phone call to an employee at Calif.-based Five Ten.

At the other end of the line was Hollywood and Tom Cruise’s “people.” They were in planning for a major stunt for the then-upcoming “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” film.

In the movie Cruise’s character climbs the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai. A production coordinator at the film asked if Five Ten’s president Charles Cole could drive to the studio and look at a mockup of the building and the set.

They needed Cole to talk with Cruise about climbing and rubber. And scaling the sheer glass of the Burj Khalifa building.

tom cruise mission impossible boots

Cole met with the movie crew, and in three weeks he and the Five Ten staff designed a new rubber type. Soon Cruise and his crew were filming on sheer glass walls made to look more than 2,500 feet off the desert floor.

The news this week is that the “Mission: Impossible” rubber is coming to market. Five Ten initially thought the super-gummy compound would have no commercial use. But after some tests the brand decided to build the rubber into climbing shoes and mountain biking footwear .

The rubber is called Stealth MI6, and it is interesting in that it is “the softest hard-rubber out there,” according to Nancy Bouchard, communications director and athlete advisor at Five Ten. “It is an entirely new class of rubber. It has a crazy soft durometer but with durability.”

In short, the rubber is gummy and extra sticky — enough to even get some purchase on sheer glass — but it’s also resistant to wear. The rubber is resilient, smearing and then popping back to shape after it’s stretched.

tom cruise mission impossible boots

A climbing shoe comes to market this month with the stick-on-glass rubber. Five Ten’s Team VXi shoe, which has a synthetic-suede upper and a single Velcro strap, retails for $170. The company is marketing it by saying it will be “as if you had hands for feet.”

We haven’t yet climbed with MI6 shoes. But in the hand it does feel different.

Pro climbers and athletes got the shoe a few months ago. It’s already been on the podium at major competitions, including the men’s and women’s first-place climbers at the dramatic Psicobloc Masters Series deep-water soloing contest in Park City, Utah, in early August.

Said Bouchard, “the shoes demonstrated advantage on the smooth climbing wall and proved superior for wet surfaces.”

But don’t expect to stand on a dime-edge in these shoes. MI6 is definitely not an edging rubber.

Another weakness with the rubber is that it “gloms on anything — dust, dirt, hair,” Bouchard said. If the rubber gets dirty and you are on a slick surface you can slide.

For biking, the rubber grips onto flat pedals. Five Ten touts “cushioning, shock absorption and vibration-dampening qualities” with the MI6 rubber outsoles on its Freerider VXi Elements shoes . They go on sale starting this month for $125.

tom cruise mission impossible boots

If you’re familiar with Five Ten and climbing shoes you likely know the company’s Stealth C4 sticky rubber. The new MI6 uses the same polymer structure as C4, though MI6 is a much softer version.

What’s the secret sauce? We pressed Five Ten, but the company said… ( continue article on page 2)

Both "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" and Tom Cruise look and feel exhausted

Ethan hunt chose to accept this mission, which is only the first of two parts. but you don't have to, by gary m. kramer.

Perhaps the most unbelievable thing in " Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" isn't the nifty gravity-defying stunts on a train, or the deceitful trickery that unfolds in low-key airport escapade, or the extended car chase through the streets of Italy, but that the opening sequence features a Russian submarine, Seebastopol, sinking in the Bering Sea. It is an unfortunately timed bit of cinema that almost casts a pall over this bloated film.

Cruise just does not seem to be having fun here, and viewers may share his fatigue.

The Russian submarine is sunk during an underwater skirmish in what might be an imaginary game of "Battleship." Torpedoes are launched by both vessels, but suddenly things vanish when they are supposed to make impact. What emerges from this incident is the film's McGuffin, a special key that is comprised of two parts that need to be interlocked to access "The Entity" which has the capability to overtake the world intelligence networks and weaponize them. So, obviously, this key should not fall into the wrong person's hands.

Enter Ethan Hunt ( Tom Cruise ) of the IMF. (That's "Impossible Mission Force," not "International Monetary Fund," as one character wonders.) Ethan has chosen to accept his mission to recover the two keys. And so begins an overlong game of Three-card Monte, as the keys are snatched up and pocketed and stolen (step and repeat and repeat) by various players from familiar faces including Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and The White Widow ( Vanessa Kirby ), to series newcomers Gabriel (Esai Morales) and Grace (Hayley Atwell). Actually, Gabriel is not new to Ethan; they have a past that is shown briefly in flashbacks that provides a little context.

Gabriel is actually the best thing in "Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One." The suave Morales slinks through the film making his unflappable villain alluring. He can disappear as in the aforementioned airport episode, and he is also all-knowing, informing one character that they will betray him — and why — before it happens. Morales is such a smooth operator one might wish he played Ethan Hunt because Tom Cruise looks weary in the role.

Cruise just does not seem to be having fun here, and viewers may share his fatigue. His initial meeting with Grace, a pickpocket he picks up because she may hold a key to the keys, is flat, rather than charming. Cruise's megawatt smile seems dimmed. A subsequent comic action sequence has the pair handcuffed together trying to drive a tiny yellow Fiat through the streets of Italy and encountering a series of obstacles, but it is neither amusing nor exciting. Moreover, there is no chemistry between these attractive leads. At least Hayley Atwell tries to imbue Grace with an air of mystery that prompts viewers to question if she is trustworthy, but that's pretty much all Atwell gets to do. She is a welcome addition but mostly wasted.

The entire film feels jury-rigged as if every action sequence — and there are too few of them — is designed by an algorithm rather than a human.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One

Director Christopher McQuarrie mostly puts his cast through the motions without creating any emotion. "Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" is almost devoid of thrills. A criminally boring sequence involves Ethan's colleague Benji ( Simon Pegg ) having to defuse a bomb by answering a series of riddles. When "The Entity," hacks into Luther's ( Ving Rhames ) tech and gives Ethan wrong directions during a foot chase through Venice, making the hero too late, what transpires lacks the desired impact. McQuarrie overplays the scene here reaching operatic heights he should save for the daredevilling.

The entire film feels jury-rigged as if every action sequence — and there are too few of them — is designed by an algorithm rather than a human. Perhaps the nefarious Entity wrote the lame screenplay? The script, which feels wholly artificial, was actually penned by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen. But it does seem odd that Denlinger ( Cary Elwes ), the Director of National Intelligence, asks to define the meaning of the word "sentient" when he is told The Entity has become sentient. "Are you telling me, it has a mind of its own?" he asks, incredulous. Yes, Delinger, that is what "sentient" means. And it is no clearer when The Entity is vaguely described as "a mind-reading, shapeshifting, incarnation of chaos."

We need your help to stay independent

Even the familiar tricks of a character wearing face masks to disguise themselves as someone else feels old. An early sequence involving a strange man entering a meeting lacks surprise, and a bit where Grace poses as another character only ensures that ruse will be discovered at the wrong moment. The franchise may rely on its gimmicks, but it does not generate nostalgia; it just feels stale.

Want a daily wrap-up of all the news and commentary Salon has to offer? Subscribe to our morning newsletter , Crash Course.

The stunts do provide some spectacle, with Cruise getting involved in some aerial action, but it is maybe an hour or so into this 163-minute movie before a car chase, and it is not necessarily that exhilarating. "Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" should be breathtakingly entertaining edge-of-your-seat wall-to-wall action , but even a bit involving the characters fighting on top of runaway train feels tired. Hasn't this all been done before and better?

What is disheartening is that this is only "Part One." That the film does not end on a gripping cliffhanger is not encouraging. There should be anticipation for the next installment, but McQuarrie fails to generate even that.

As the characters in the IMF are told they must choose their mission, viewers should make the choice to pass on this one.

"Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One" is in theaters July 12.

Mission Impossible 8 spoiler photos leaked as Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt captured in huge twist

Spoiler photos for the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two have been leaked and it looks like Tom Cruise's iconic character Ethan Hawk could find himself in trouble

  • 12:00, 15 Apr 2024 Updated 12:33, 15 Apr 2024

Tom Cruise has been spotted filming Mission Impossible scenes in London.

The iconic actor, famous for pulling off his own stunts while filming the Mission Impossible franchise, has been seen filming scenes as Ethan Hawk in England's capital. Tom has been spotted filming a scene near Downing Street where it appears his character Ethan has been captured.

In a series of behind-the-scenes photos, Tom is seen on his knees with his hands in the air, but could this mean the of Ethan in the upcoming eighth instalment of the franchise? Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will see Ethan's battle with the Entity continue.

As well as being spotted in London, the actor has been seen filming an action scene for an upcoming movie in Derbyshire, in a dirt-covered Jeep, as well as aerial footage showing evidence of a film set, according to the BBC . Social media posts from his former co-stars also heavily suggest that filming of the eighth instalment is well under way.

Simon Pegg posted a selfie on Instagram with co-stars Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Tarzan Davis and wrote the cryptic caption: “Saving the world has never been so much fun.” In the new addition to the franchise, IMF agent Ethan and his allies will go up against a number of antagonists as they aim to get control of the AI weapon known as the entity.

Mission Impossible fans can expect plenty of death-defying stunts. The new movie is scheduled to be released on May, 23, 2025. Filming initially began in May 2022 but was paused due to writers' and actors' strikes.

Esai Morales as villain Gabriel, Shea Wigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as CIA agents Jasper and Degas, and Pom Klementieff as assassin Paris are in line for a return. Henry Czerny will also reprise his role as IMF director Eugene Kittridge, while Rolf Saxon will return as another character who first appeared in the very first Mission: Impossible film – CIA analyst William Donloe.

It's yet to be confirmed whether Angela Bassett will return after starring as CIA director Erika Sloane in Fallout after Covid travel restrictions ruled her out of an appearance in Part 1. "It's interesting, she was going to be the head of the CIA, she was going to be in that room with all the other heads of the intelligence community that you meet," director Christopher McQuarrie told Variety in a recent interview.

"And we're not done with Angela Bassett. Angela is too fabulous. You can never, ever let Angela get away," he added. "There's always a plan in the future."

Meanwhile, Dakota Fanning recently revealed that Tom Cruise still sends her a birthday gift every year after she was gifted her first mobile phone from the actor. Dakota starred in Uptown Girls with the actor. She made the revelation during a joint interview with her Ripley co-star Andrew Scott for Harper's Bazaar earlier this week.

Andrew was asked: "Who gave Dakota her first cell phone?" To which he guessed: "Okay, well it's gotta be some Hollywood icon... Tom Cruise?"

"Yes," she confirmed. "It was a Motorola Razr," before her co-star asked: "Wow! Were you so excited?"

"Oh my God, I was so excited," Dakota replied. "I didn't have anyone to call or text at the time. You know, I was 11...But I loved having it!" The actress revealed she "still keeps in touch" with the actor, adding: "Tom still sends me a birthday gift every year and has since that birthday."

Ethan Hunt is back. The trailer for “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” was released today, with Tom Cruise starring in the fifth installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

From being suspended from the ceiling in the original film to scaling the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai for 2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” the MI films are always action-packed.

In the new trailer, Cruise stands on the wing of an Airbus A400. “I’ve often sat on airplanes, looked out and thought, ‘What it would be like out there on the wing?'” he told  USA Today . “That’s me the whole time. I was standing right over the tires when we landed,” said Cruise. “It’s nerve-racking for everyone else but pretty exciting for me.”

Throughout the clip, Cruise and team take on their most impossible mission yet: eradicating the Syndicate, an international rogue organization as highly skilled as Cruise’s team is, committed to destroying the IMF.

While there doesn’t seem to be a major shoe moment for the Hollywood A-lister in the trailer, his co-star, Rebecca Ferguson, makes a statement in black strappy sandals paired with a high-slit yellow dress.

Off-screen, Cruise’s go-to shoes always seem to be brown leather, outdoor-inspired moc-toe boots. He’s been seen wearing this boot style at movie premieres, on late-night talk shows and his everyday outings.

Look through the gallery above and tell us what you think of Cruise’s go-to shoe style in the comments below.

And don’t forget to watch the actor in the “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” trailer below:

Thandie Newton Recalls the "Nightmare" of Working with a "Really Stressed" Tom Cruise

"He tries superhard to be a nice person. But the pressure. He takes on a lot," she said in an interview.

  • Newton described Cruise as "really stressed" and "dominant," although "he tries superhard to be a nice person."

No one, it seems, is impervious to the fear that Mission: Impossible 's franchise star and Hollywood's resident Scientology ambassador, Tom Cruise, can provoke. Not even Thandie Newton .

In conversation with Vulture , Newton described her experience working opposite a "really stressed" and "dominant" Cruise on the 2000 film Mission: Impossible II . When asked why she never filmed another movie with the action/thriller franchise, the Westworld actress merely said, "Oh, I was never asked. I was so scared of Tom. He was a very dominant individual. He tries superhard to be a nice person. But the pressure. He takes on a lot. And I think he has this sense that only he can do everything as best as it can be done."

She also regaled an incident on set in which her and Cruise attempted to finish a night scene on a balcony. "I don't think it was a very well-written scene," Newton said. "I get angry with him. We're frustrated with each other. And we're looking out over Spain. It wasn't going well. And [director] John Woo, bless him, wasn't there. He was downstairs looking at everything on a monitor. And John had made a decision at the beginning of the movie, unbeknownst certainly to me, that he didn't speak English. Which I think was very helpful to him, but it was extremely unhelpful to the rest of us. So this scene was happening, and Tom was not happy with what I was doing because I had the shittiest lines.

"And he gets so frustrated with having to try and explain that he goes, 'Let me just—let's just go do it. Let's just rehearse on-camera.' So we rehearsed and they recorded it, and then he goes, 'I'll be you. You be me.' So we filmed the entire scene with me being him—because, believe me, I knew the lines by then—and him playing me. And it was the most unhelpful … I can't think of anything less revealing. It just pushed me further into a place of terror and insecurity. It was a real shame. And bless him. And I really do mean bless him, because he was trying his damnedest."

According to Newton, Cruise grew more stressed over the course of that night, to the point of manifesting a blemish on his face. "I remember at the beginning of the night, seeing this slight red mark on his nose, and by the end of the night, I kid you not—this is how his metabolism is so fierce—he had a big whitehead where that red dot was," she said. "It would take anyone else 48 hours to manifest a zit. I saw it growing, and it was like the zit was me, just getting bigger and bigger."

She said that she later called director Jonathan Demme, telling him how much of "a nightmare" the on-set disaster was. "As I was describing it, it was clear that I thought I was the big fucking problem. And Jonathan was like, 'Thandie, shame on you for not backing yourself.' He was really sweet," Newton continued. "And then Tom called and I thought, Oh, this is it. The apology. No, he was just like, 'We're going to reshoot this next week.' I'm like, 'Way brilliant.' And the next time we shot it, I went in there and I just basically manifested all the—because I realized what he wanted. He just wanted this alpha bitch. And I did as best as I could. It's not the best way to get the best work out of someone."

Still, Newton doesn't seem to think poorly of Cruise as a person. "He wasn't horrible. It was just—he was really stressed," she said. "I had the most extraordinary time, and you know who got me that role? Nicole Kidman. I've never actually outright asked her, but when your husband is like, 'Who would you mind me pretending to shag for the next six months?' You know what I mean? It's kind of nice if you can pick together. Nicole was a huge advocate for me."

Newton later said of her Mission: Impossible II experience , "Look, creative stuff is difficult. I was so tender and sensitive. And, also, if you think about the timeline of that, it was still early in my healing, in my recovery. I'd had good therapy. I'd realized that I was precious. If it was me now, I would want to go in and go, 'Hey!' I'd be it. You wouldn't need to play me and I play you on that balcony. And I would have squeezed that spot. Bam!"

Oh, and if you were perhaps wondering what kind of gifts Cruise gives, Newton also had an answer for that: "He was very generous and open about sharing Scientological stuff. Christmas gifts would be something to do with Scientology. … Like a book with the greatest hits of Scientology, a bit like a Bible kind of thing. I was curious, because it's like, Wow, if it's going to attract people, powerful, high-profile people, there's got to be some glue that sticks this shit together. Didn't find any."

This Is Tom Cruise’s Best Running Sequence in the Mission: Impossible Franchise

The world turns, Tom Cruise runs.

With Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 hitting theaters, expectations are high for Tom Cruise 's next big stunt as agent Ethan Hunt. Still, some of the most thrilling action sequences in the franchise show him doing one of the most basic things a person can do: running. He has turned this into an art, and every Mission: Impossible movie has at least one sequence of him just running — long or short, they're there.

For Dead Reckoning Part 1 , we know he jumps off a cliff on a motorbike , yes, but what about his signature stunt of simply running? Paramount Pictures recently released a compilation of Cruise's best running stunts in order to assure us that, yes, he will have plenty of running bits in the next movie. To prepare for it, let's have a look at some past great ones, see what makes a running scene great, and, of course, settle on what's the best one, shall we?

RELATED: Here's How Much Is Left to Film for ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 2’

The Running Sequence Across Shanghai in 'Mission: Impossible 3'

Mission: Impossible III saw the epic return of Tom Cruise to the role of Ethan Hunt after six years, this time directed by J.J. Abrams . His mission is to stop arms dealer Owen Davian ( Philip Seymour Hoffman ), but things quickly take a very personal turn. The movie begins with Hunt coming out of retirement to rescue a protégé of his in Berlin and sets him on a globetrotting adventure that culminates in the rescue of his wife Julia ( Michelle Monaghan ) in Shanghai.

The whole sequence starts with Hunt being betrayed by fellow IMF agent John Musgrave ( Billy Crudup ), who was helping Davian the whole time. The bad guys inserted in Ethan's skull an explosive micro-pellet similar to the one that killed his protégé, meaning he has a mere seven minutes to save Julia. Ethan knocks Musgrave unconscious and uses his phone to call Benji Dunn ( Simon Pegg ), who guides him a little over a mile in Shanghai to the building where Julia is being held captive. The set piece lasts around 2 minutes, including a 15-second single-take shot of Cruise running along a Shanghai river at top speed while yelling for the locals to get out of the way. He then navigates narrow streets and is almost run over by a truck until finally finds the building Julia is at.

This may not be the most elaborate set piece in the franchise, but it's certainly among the most exhilarating. J.J. Abrams was still known for his work in Alias and Lost back then, so filming people running in crowded spaces such as a jungle was among his specialties, and it worked perfectly for Mission: Impossible III .

The Running Sequence Across London in ‘Mission: Impossible - Fallout'

Twelve years and three movies later, Cruise is once again running through a city in Mission: Impossible - Fallout . This time, though, the running action scene happens halfway through the movie, as Ethan Hunt needs to catch rogue CIA agent August Walker ( Henry Cavill ) before he flees London with Solomon Lane ( Sean Harris ), the leader of the Apostles. Fallout is not only one of the best entries of Mission: Impossible , it's also one of the best action movies ever and has a number of insane set pieces, like the skydiving in Paris scene and the helicopter chase towards the end. But, once again, it's the simplicity of Tom Cruise running across London that stands out as the best action sequence.

The whole piece goes on for around seven minutes as Ethan runs and jumps through the rooftops, interrupts a wake happening at a church, and disrupts the whole workflow of a company, doing everything to catch Walker by the time he arrives at Tate Modern. Cruise is famous for doing his own stunts, but this is one of his most extreme ones because it consists of non-stop physical effort. This is also one of the most celebrated of Cruise's stunts due to the fact that he actually broke his ankle while filming it . While jumping from one rooftop to another, he slammed his right leg into the building exterior, and you can even hear his actual scream of pain in the film. Nevertheless, he limped on for our entertainment, but principal photography had to shut down for a few weeks so that he could recover and continue running.

So, Which One Is Tom Cruise’s Best Running Sequence in the Mission: Impossible Franchise?

Those two are, of course, not the only running sequences in the franchise. Cruise has been running and pulling crazy stunts since the mid-1990s, so there are countless moments that deserve recognition. For example, the sandstorm chase in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is even more complex than the two previously mentioned, but, while it does combine a lot of elements that further complicate Ethan Hunt's life, what makes a good Tom Cruise running set piece is simplicity. The beauty and the whole point of it is to just see the greatest movie star alive doing what he does best.

With all this in mind, we can safely state that Cruise's best running scene in the franchise is the one in Mission: Impossible III . Although short, what captures the viewers' attention is how natural it feels for Tom Cruise to hop from a rooftop to a bridge in the middle of a traditional Chinese neighborhood in Shanghai, while yelling at the passers-by and at Benji for instructions. His physical effort is palpable, as proven by his posture and breathing for a quarter of a minute non-stop as he runs in a single take. There's no visible external element pressing him, the sense of urgency built mostly by J.J. Abrams' quick transitions and close-following camera and by Michael Giacchino 's intense soundtrack. The two of them had already worked together on Lost , and the scene is so reminiscent of that, we can all but imagine a smoke monster running after Cruise, too.

This doesn't take away the merit of all the other running sequences in the Mission: Impossible franchise, quite the contrary. The constant effort to pull out crazier and more elaborate stunts is what makes these movies great, as well as Cruise's willingness to keep taking things to the next level. He has run through rooftops, up walls, down buildings, jumped across gaps between buildings... We can only thank him and his crew for all they have given us, and hope they don't stop anytime soon.

Tom Cruise Comments On The 'Weirdest' On Set 'Mission: Impossible' Rumor: Are People Allowed To Look Him In The Eye?

Posted: April 16, 2024 | Last updated: April 16, 2024

There are major movie stars, and then there’s Tom Cruise. The 61 year-old A-lister is showing no signs of slowing down. Cruise recently commented on the “weirdest” rumor about his behavior on the set of "MI." Namely, are people allowed to look him in the eye during filming? Once you’re an A-list celebrity, you can demand or request a variety of things in order to properly get your work done. There are rumors that celebrities like Ellen Degeneres don’t want actors or crew members looking them in the eye on set, presumably to help maintain focus. Tom Cruise has seemingly heard those rumors about him, and actually name dropped them in an interview with The Times about his public image. After claiming they were the “weirdest” rumor he’d heard about himself, his "Mission: Impossible" co-star Simon Pegg came to his defense.

Tom Cruise Seen Sprinting Down Street in London as He Shoots Next Mission: Impossible Movie

The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' film, which does not yet have a title, is expected in theaters May 23, 2025

Mega / Dean - Click News And Media / SplashNews.com

Tom Cruise is showing no signs of slowing down in the next Mission: Impossible movie.

On Sunday, Cruise, 61, was seen sprinting down a street in London while filming a scene for the upcoming eighth film in his signature action franchise. The actor could be seen wearing a black suit with a white shirt opened at the top, with fake blood drenched over his chest while filming the sequence.

Cruise most recently appeared as his Mission: Impossible character Ethan Hunt in last year's Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning , which made $172 million at the  domestic box office . Dead Reckoning also earned the franchise its first-ever Academy Award nominations when it received nods for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the recent 96th Oscars ceremony.

A title for the upcoming eighth Mission: Impossible movie has not yet been announced. The next film was originally set for release on June 28, but production delays related to 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike forced the film to restart production in the fall and delay its release until May 23, 2025, as Deadline reported back in October.

Dead Reckoning left Cruise's character Ethan Hunt and series regulars Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg) at odds with villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) and forging new alliances with characters like Grace (Hayley Atwell) over a battle for control over a sentient artificial intelligence.

The eighth Mission: Impossible film is just one movie among a number of projects Cruise has in development. In February, PEOPLE confirmed Cruise will star in the next movie from The Revenant filmmaker  Alejandro G. Iñárritu , while The Hollywood Reporter  reported in January that Paramount is developing Top Gun 3 as a sequel to Cruise's major 2022 success Top Gun: Maverick .

Cruise, known for his penchant for performing his own stunts, was recently seen climbing the iconic Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills on March 16 accompanied by a film crew. A representative for Cruise did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Monday. While it's unclear what Cruise was filming on Saturday, the stunt did not appear related to the next Mission: Impossible film.

Mission: Impossible 8 is expected in theaters May 23, 2025.

Suri Cruise celebrates her 18th birthday in rainy NYC as estranged dad Tom works in London

Suri Cruise was photographed celebrating her 18th birthday in New York City while her estranged father, Tom Cruise, worked abroad in London.

According to pictures obtained by Page Six, the birthday girl stepped out in the rainy weather with a friend on Thursday. The pals chatted as Suri held a pink umbrella over their heads.

The teen, who is also the daughter of Katie Holmes, wore jeans, a denim jacket over a brown shirt and black shoes. She carried a blue backpack and held what looked like a birthday gift in her hand.

A day before Suri’s big day, her father, Tom, was spotted overseas in London filming a new project.

The “Mission Impossible” star, 61, flashed a wide grin as he arrived at a helipad and piloted a jet.

Tom and his youngest daughter have not had a close relationship over the past years. In fact, a source exclusively told Page Six earlier this month that the movie star has not seen Suri since 2012 (they were last seen together at Disney World that summer).

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” the insider told us. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Holmes, who filed for divorce from Tom when Suri was only 6 years old in June 2012, previously told Glamour that she wanted to keep her daughter out of the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

The 45-year-old also revealed in November 2013 court docs that she filed for divorce from Tom “to protect Suri from Scientology ,” a religion that is often referred to as a cult.

While it is believed that Holmes signed several non-disclosure agreements to prevent her from speaking about her marriage to Tom and the Church of Scientology, Suri will be free to discuss the religion and her father now that she is legally an adult.

Though it’s unclear whether the teen will publicly speak about her father, she won’t be joining Scientology anytime soon.

“Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be … she deserves love and sympathy,” former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder told Page Six.

TOM Cruise looked terrified as he filmed dramatic Mission Impossible 8 scenes in London today.

Actor Tom , 61, was seen filming the upcoming blockbuster near Downing Street , playing out a scene where his character appeared to be captured by the enemy.

The Hollywood movie star was seen holding his hands up in surrender while in-character as protagonist, Ethan Hunt.

Dressed in a navy jacket and jeans, Tom chatted with director Christopher McQuarrie and production staff inbetween scenes.

Just a few weeks ago, Tom stunned tourists as he sprinted through the city covered in blood , shutting down Central London.

In exclusive photos from the set, he was seen running over Westminster Bridge with army and police officers on his tail.

The Mission Impossible team have been filming at  Surrey’s  Longcross Studios as well as on location since the beginning of March.

Determined to stick to schedule by any means necessary, at one point Tom forked out for the  entire cast and crew to be flown to set by helicopters  after the M25 shut down.

Little is known about what will happen in the eighth instalment of the series - only that it will  follow on from Dead Reckoning , which was released last year.

Originally titled Dead Reckoning: Part Two, the new film has since dropped being considered a second part and will instead go by its own name.

Reasons for this are unknown but rumours have varied from the film going in a completely different direction to what was initially planned, to the name being scrapped due to Part One's lacklustre success at the box office.

Starring alongside Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby and Simon Pegg among others, Dead Reckoning went on to get two Oscar nominations for sound and visual effects.

However, despite raking in $565.8million worldwide at the box office, Dead Reckoning failed to meet the necessary returns to break even from its $291million budget.

On average, taking into account promotional costs etc, a film needs to make 2.5x its budget in order to be considered a financial success.

This was hindered slightly by the global phenomenon of  Barbenheimer   (the release date of Barbie and Oppenheimer)  which came just two weeks after Dead Reckoning's, causing a drop off in potential sales.

Currently, the as-yet-untitled Mission Impossible 8 is scheduled to be released on May 23, 2025 after a string of  pushbacks due to the pandemic  and last year's SAG-AFTRA strikes.

It was initially meant to be ready for release in August 2022, before being delayed to November 2022, July 2023 and June 2024.
