My friend and I ended up needing something to do in Portsmouth. We luckily stumbled upon a bike tour and had the best time! Our guide, Tammy, was AMAZING! So knowledgeable and fun! I definitely want to take another tour when I’m back in town. This as an absolute must do!

Outstanding! Audrey_R, Sep 2023 The entire bike ride was comfortably paced and not rushed, including stopping to get water and a bathroom break. It was scenic from start to finish and very relaxing. Marcus was laid back and passionate regarding the area and history of Portsmouth and New Castle, New Hampshire. Looking over the Piscataqua River to Maine was cool. I will be back for another tour and found a beautiful, scenic park off the beaten path to spend the day at picnicking and watching the boats sail by. Rich in history and beauty!

Great Bike Tour

Review of: PortCity Bike Tours

What a great way to spend two hours! Really enjoyed the bike tour that included beautiful sites, interesting history and great exercise. Our tour guide, Steve, knew just when to stop to either point out something of interest or give us a break. We got to see some out of the way areas that you wouldn't normally see by car or foot. Well worth the time!

A must when you visit Portsmouth

Review of: 2-Hour Best of Portsmouth & New Castle Island Sightseeing Tour. Guided Narrated.

This was an amazingly well organized, fun, educational, beautiful tour. From the moment that we scheduled it, the folks at Portcity communicated well with us, told us what we needed to bring, wear, where to park for free and more. What a well oiled operation. The tour itself was a pretty easy ride with stops along the way to learn about the history of the area and enjoy the spectacular views. Overall, we went 10 miles in 2 hours. It was very relaxed, Beth, our guide was awesome. We highly recommend and we will do more tours in the future!

A must-do when visiting Portsmouth

One of the best bike tours we've been on. Steve (I hope I remembered his name correctly) was a great guide and super knowledgeable about the area. Our one request - water views - and he delivered. We biked out to a little island and to an old inn which was beautiful and may be a future stay. The history of the area is quite intriguing and was fun to learn about while getting in a decent bike ride as well. For anyone not used to biking, the area is relatively flat, except for one "hill" which wasn't so bad, and extremely doable for even a novice.

BEST PART OF OUR TRIP

This was our first time to Portsmouth and we could not be happier with this tour! Paul was amazing as a tour guide and getting to see the local streets in New Castle was priceless! They give just enough history to keep it interesting but not boring! We had all ages in our group and they were very conscientious of everyone's surroundings! It is a must see on your Portsmouth trip!

Great experience! Combination of history, interests, beautiful scenery, and knowledgeable and pleasant guide.

Super knowledgeable tour guide!

Our tour was so much fun! I'm not usually too interested in history, but learning about the town on this tour was so much fun! Our tour guide was so enthusiastic about his info! The ride was uphill at times so it did take a little work!

Our guide, Paul, was very informative of the area. He was considerate of the cycling abilities of all three of the riders. He kindly offered to take a couple photos as I was a solo traveller. His love of the area shows in his eagerness to share it with others. What a great morning!!

Had communication with the owner Dawn, when I booked and she was full of great recommendations for Portsmouth. On the day of our ride Vinny took us and he was a great guide. Filled with local information and just the right amount. Felt very safe at all times. Two hour ride flew by. Highly recommend to see the area this way

Relaxing cruise

Relaxing cruise

We had a great time on this cruise. The sites are beautiful from the water and the cruise was very relaxing. We sat on the right side of the boat but I feel like those on the left side got a slightly better view because more time is spent talking about the sights on the way out than on the way back... just a tip if you're wondering where to sit.

Relaxing river tour

Relaxing river tour

My wife and I took the harbor cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty of room on the boat to move around. Captain Eric was great at narrating the tour and providing insight to the history of the area. Planning to take one of the upstream river tours in the fall.

In summer cool off with a sea breeze and get an overview of Portsmouth

The first thing we did upon arriving in Portsmouth was take the afternoon harbor cruise. We are glad we did. The crew was friendly and narration was informative. It was a warm summer day and the sea spray felt good. The only challenge was to find a parking spot since there is no parking near the launch dock. We parked on the street a couple of blocks away.

Aaaaaaaaaaawesome! Just do it!

We did Portsmouth Habor Cruises with my one year old daughter. It was so awesome, to be honest it was breathtaking. We live in Portsmouth since five month and now I know (again) how beautiful this place is. We want to do the sunset cruise soon. Can’t get enough!

A Must Do When Visiting Portsmouth

A Must Do When Visiting Portsmouth

We had an excellent private family charter of the boat for a special occasion. From start to finish the the experience was first rate. Both the captain and crew member / bartender were great to engage with, and provided excellent service. The cruise provides a memorable view of the Portsmouth harbor and outlying islands.

Great Tour Of Historic Harbor & Piscataque River!

Great Tour Of Historic Harbor & Piscataque River!

Enjoyed taking the narrated tour (not so much info on the sunset cruise) as it touched on the ecology of the river as well as the history. Leaving from downtown , (next to 3 beautiful tugboats), you fist pause to spot submarines in the shipyard, learn its history as one of the 2 most important yards in WW-II. Tuck into several coves off the harbor to check out the former estates of several historic personages. Snap a pic as we pause in front of each lighthouse and forts as well as spotting the cribs that anchored the massive submarine net that protected the harbor during WW-II. Pass out into the Atlantic to round the back of Castle island and return.

Enjoyable Cruise!

Enjoyable Cruise!

We've been on lobster cruises in Maine and dolphin cruises in Florida. I've been a resident of NH over 20 years and FINALLY got to enjoy a NH cruise! What a great experience. The captain Dimitri was extremely knowledgeable and the staff was super nice. What a nice relaxing cruise around the beautiful NH waters. I loved the views, but I especially enjoyed the historical facts and wealth of knowledge our captain shared. It was a lovely hour plus! Well worth the money

Gorgeous Sunset Cruise Friendly Staff

Gorgeous Sunset Cruise Friendly Staff

This was a last minute decision and was a really good one.

Parking: There is no parking on Ceres street where the cruise leaves from. Parking there is for Oar House Restaurant only. You must park elsewhere. There is a Garage on Hanover street for 2.00 an hour. Park as close as you can to Market in that garage and walk down to Market, then make a left. You will see a set of stairs down to Ceres Street. Boat dock is behind the Oar Street seating deck.

Cruise: The trip itself is wonderful. Boat is on the smaller side than what we took on the Hudson Cruise where we live, but still a very cool boat and well maintained, clean and pretty. Whoever narrates the cruise...Captain maybe, has a very soothing voice. I wasn't a fan of the choice in music, but I don't like Steely Dan type music. Just my taste though. Some of the other music was okay and soothing.

Sights: You will see some awesome and pretty sights like a submarine yard and lighthouses, sailboats and older structures. You will take a brief turn on the Atlantic too. They have different cruises all through the day so choose the one that's right for you. Sunset cruise was pretty but we went in September and it got colder towards the end. The woman who check you in is super nice and helpful. Go, you won't be disappointed. The price was extremely reasonable for this 1.5 hour informative little jaunt.

Super Trip

Took the ride up to Great Bay with some friends the other day. The weather was just right, and the scenery good even though the autumn color was pretty much past. The captain’s narration was all done on the outward leg of the trip and was very informative as to the history and ecology of the area. Did have a sandwich and a bowl of chowder and both were excellent. There is also beer, wine, and a full bar available. We had the Great Bay trip because of the tides. If the tide were higher the boat goes up the river to Dover. In any case, this is a definite pleasure cruise.

Excellent from start to finish!

Excellent from start to finish!

Our Portsmouth Harbor Cruise was one of the best experiences we've ever had. Family trip with my wife and teenage daughter. July 7, 2019 at 4:30. We are locals and figured it was time to take a harbor tour. The 2 man crew was great, especially our captain. Reservations easy online and not too many people on the boat. We were very lucky to see a large ship come into the harbor AND the USS NH Submarine leaving the Navy Ship Yard. They waited for both even though we ran late and it was a once in a lifetime experience. I realize we just got lucky with the timing but the crew handled it perfectly! Snacks, drinks/booze, and bathrooms on the boat. Well done.

Rolling Stones Kick-Start ‘Hackney Diamonds’ Tour With Thrilling Houston Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome , and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.

The first step was Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday night. After a strong opening set by Gary Clark Jr. that centered around his new LP, JPEG Raw , the band took the stage to the familiar opening notes of “Start Me Up.” This is the first time Mick Jagger has faced a stadium crowd since his 80th birthday last year, but his voice and body seem like they stopped aging sometime around Steel Wheels . It’s almost impossible to fully believe until you see it in person. (“People say Joe Biden is too old to be president,” an elderly woman behind me said early in the night. “They need to look at Mick!”)

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

He wasn’t kidding. The 1965 Aftermath track wasn’t played live once until their 2022 European tour, and this was the first time it crossed the Atlantic. But it’s not something you hear much on classic rock radio, and the audience reaction was pretty muted at first. “I don’t think you really knew it,” Jagger said at the end. “But you got to know it as it went along.”

The Hackney Diamonds portion of the evening began at this point with leadoff single “Angry,” which popped onstage much like it did during their surprise album release show at the New York club Racket last year. “Beast of Burden” won the fan vote for the night, and it provided veteran backup Stones singer Bernard Fowler with a much-deserved spotlight moment. “You’ve got one more vote in November,” Jagger said. “Don’t forget to vote then too. What to play now? Something old … something new.”

At the midway point of every Rolling Stones concert in recent memory, Jagger introduces the band one by one before heading offstage so Keith Richards can sing a couple of songs. For some reason, perhaps to squeeze more new songs into the set without cutting any of the standards, Richards was limited to just a single tune. He made it count by singing 1981’s “Little T & A” for the first time since 2016, though it was disappointing he didn’t get a chance to break out “Tell Me Straight” from Hackney Diamonds . It feels inevitable that’ll happen before this tour ends.

Jagger returned for “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Gimme Shelter,” which gave new background singer Chanel Haynes a chance to emerge from the wings and show off her stunning pipes. She first entered Stones World in 2022 when Sasha Allen, their previous background singer, couldn’t make a Milan show. Haynes was playing the lead role in the West End musical Tina at the time, and she parachuted in at the last second to save the show. This frustrated the producers of Tina , who fired her for handing the show off to her understudy that night when she wasn’t ill, but it impressed the Stones enough to hire her for this tour.

The main set wrapped up with “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Paint It Black,” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” These are songs they’ve done hundreds and hundreds of times for good reason. The hardcores may yearn for deeper cuts like “Memory Motel” or “Moonlight Mile,” but Jagger knows they’d cause many people to sit down and start scrolling through Instagram. And when you have a song like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in your repertoire, you simply have to play it every time you do a gig.

“Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” one of the finest songs on Hackney Diamonds , kicked off the brief encore set. If it wasn’t challenging enough to channel Merry Clayton a few songs back, Haynes had to now deliver Lady Gaga’s soaring vocal parts from the original recording. Unsurprisingly, she crushed it. For a moment, it really felt like witnessing a scene from some alternate-universe version of A Star Is Born.

The night closed out with a joyous “Satisfaction,” meaning they played just three songs from Hackney Diamonds. That’s typical for a tour in support of a latter-day Rolling Stones album, but this one really deserved more. They dropped “Midnight Rambler,” one of the Richards songs, and the acoustic set to make room for the three new ones in the show, but it be worth further restructuring to squeeze in “Whole Wide World,” “Bite My Head Off,” and “Tell Me Straight.” These are stellar songs that deserve a spot in the set, even if it means tossing aside “Paint It Black” or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” sometimes.

Rolling stones kick-start 'hackney diamonds' tour with thrilling houston concert, supreme court puppet master’s consulting firm clients exposed in leak, kristi noem doubles down on story about killing her dog from memoir: ‘i decided what i did’.

The band’s 60th anniversary tour in 2022 seemed like it could be the end of the Rolling Stones saga, but we’re somehow now living through an entirely new era of their history. They even have a bunch of outtakes from Hackney Diamonds that they hope to release on a follow-up album. Whatever happens, they’re now in completely uncharted waters for a rock & roll band. It’s thrilling to witness.

Eagle to lead Portsmouth Tall Ships festival July 26 to July 28. Here are the details.

PORTSMOUTH - The 2024 Sail Portsmouth festival will take place Friday, July 26 to Sunday, July 28, and features the return of the country’s most famous tall ship, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle , to Portsmouth.

Joining the Eagle during the weekend-long festival will be the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey and the S/V Denis Sullivan, returning to Portsmouth after participating in last year’s Sail Portsmouth festival.

This year’s Parade of Sail will take place on the morning of Friday, July 26 between 9 and 11:30 a.m., kicking off the festival.

Recreational and commercial boaters invited to join Parade of Sail

“Sail Portsmouth is dedicated to bringing the magic of tall ships to our shores,” said Robin Comstock, a member of the Sail Portsmouth Board of Directors. “We invite everyone to join us for an unforgettable experience filled with history, adventure and the timeless allure of the sea.”

All recreational and commercial fishing boaters are invited to participate in the Parade of Sail, which will also include the city’s fireboat, a Navy tug from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and Portsmouth’s own tall ship, the Gundalow Piscataqua, all welcoming the tall ships to the city on the morning of July 26th. The exact timing of the Parade of Sail on July 26th is determined by that day’s tides and weather.

Eagle will be open for tours at State Pier in Portsmouth

During the festival, the USCGC Eagle will be docked at the state pier in Portsmouth and open for tours on Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are free and open to the public. There will be a dockside maritime tent at the state pier with educational booths, live entertainment, food, children’s activities and even roaming pirates.

“In the past few years volunteering at the festival, I’ve seen multiple generations in line, grandparents standing with children and grandchildren,” Comstock said. “Telling them stories, stories about living on the river or telling them about their parents who were in the Navy, or worked on the river, remembering their maritime history and having it touch the present and the future.”

Public can sail aboard Ernestina-Morrissey and Shining Star

From July 25 to 28, sails will be offered on both the Ernestina-Morrissey and Denis Sullivan, which will be docked at the University of New Hampshire Pier in New Castle.

Passengers can ride in the Parade of Sail aboard the M/V Shining Star or the Ernestina-Morrissey. On the Ernestina-Morrissey, passengers will be able to join the crew in hoisting the sails and steering the ship, and will learn about this schooner’s history. This sail will leave from the University of New Hampshire pier on Sullivan Lane in New Castle at 9 a.m. on July 26. Passengers are asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. to park and check in. Tickets are $88 per person.

This year, a ride aboard the M/V Shining Star during the Parade of Sail is also available. The Shining Star will head out to Star Island to watch the tall ships assemble for the Parade of Sail and will accompany the tall ships up the river. This sail will leave from the Kittery Town Dock at 8 a.m. on July 26th and will return there after the parade. Tickets are $60.

On Saturday, July 27, the Schooner Denis Sullivan will sail on a one-way trip to Boston.

It will depart from the UNH pier in New Castle and will arrive at the Moakley Courthouse Dock in Boston after an eight- to ten-hour sail. Tickets are $155. Passengers must be ambulatory and 8 years old and above. There is free parking at the UNH pier, but no overnight parking is allowed. Passengers arrange rides back to New Hampshire. The C&J Bus terminal at South Station in Boston is a 10-minute walk from the dock.

Tickets for the two-hour sails on the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey are $75. All tickets can be purchased online at  sailportsmouth.org .

Gundalow can accommodate people with mobility challenges

All passengers must be ambulatory for the tall ship sails. The Gundalow Piscataqua, which is equipped to accommodate people with mobility disabilities, will also be offering sails and can be booked by calling (603) 433-9505 or online at  www.gundalow.org .

The annual Sail Portsmouth festival raises money for the Sea Challenge Scholarship Fund, which gives local high school students the opportunity to spend a week aboard a tall ship at sea during the summer. This year’s Sea Challenge will take place July 19 to 26. For more info, visit  sailportsmouth.org .

“The festival and our donors fund the Sea Challenge. It’s so much more than a festival, it makes the benefits of experiencing life at sea for one full week available to teens,” Comstock said. “It’s a unique experience of the past and how we became who we are today, and an opportunity to learn about themselves through the maritime experience.”

The Sail Portsmouth festival relies heavily on volunteers. There’ll be a volunteer training session on Sunday, July 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Music Hall Lounge on Congress Street in Portsmouth. Those interested in volunteering can register on the Sail Portsmouth website at  sailportsmouth.org/become-a-volunteer .

Again this year, tours of and sails on the tall ships will be available during the festival and there’ll be food, activities and entertainment in a dockside maritime tent. The annual Sail Portsmouth festival raises money for the Sea Challenge Scholarship Fund, which gives local high school students the opportunity to spend a week aboard a tall ship at sea. Sail Portsmouth is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

HOUSTON (AP) — Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones .

What many believe to be the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

This story has been updated to correct a song title to “Gimme Shelter,” not “Gimmer Shelter.”

Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2024 tour setlist: Every song they played at Phoenix concert

tour portsmouth reviews

Neil Young brought Crazy Horse to Phoenix for the first since 2003, when the Greendale Tour played what we now call Arizona Financial Theatre.

Saturday’s show at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre was in support of "FU##IN’ UP," a new release that captures Young and Crazy Horse in all their ragged glory.

And they treated Phoenix to a show that put the spotlight on the staples that have made Young one of rock ‘n’ roll's most celebrated elder statesmen, setting the tone with an epic performance of “Cortez the Killer” that lasted roughly 15 minutes.

By the time they brought the concert to a cacophonous conclusion with the glorious racket of “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" and a one-song encore of "Danger Bird," Young and Crazy Horse had powered their way through such classics as “Cinnamon Girl,” “Don’t Cry No Tears” and “Powderfinger.”

Young also took a break from the distortion and his bandmates for a three-song unplugged mini-set, including “Comes a Time” and “Heart of Gold,” before the night was through.

Hello i would like to welcome you to london, my home and the city i love. as well as being an experienced blue badge tour guide (the ultimate qualification in guiding) i am also a city of london guide, city of westminster guide, windsor and eton guide and tate gallery guide, so wherever we go you'll be in good hands. only blue badge tour guides are permitted to guide inside certain locations, such as westminster abbey, windsor castle and the tower of london. my aim is to provide you with enthusiastic, informative and fun private tours which ensure that your london experience will be the best. i was born in the north of england but spent much of my childhood living in india and the middle east. i moved to london for a year to study on a postgraduate course and never left - working, bringing up my children and developing my career in guiding here. apart from a few years living in japan and singapore, london has been my home for 30 years. i believe there is something for everyone here in london, 2000 years of history rubbing shoulders in a contemporary city with modern architecture, fashion and art. whatever you are interested in, whether it is royalty, castles, palaces, traditions, galleries, museums or modern culture i can tailor a tour for you. my bespoke tours include walking tours, tours by public transport ( bus, tube, boat or train), or i can organize a car with a driver or a minibus. within london we can cover the major sites--westminster abbey, royal london, buckingham palace, changing of the guard, churchill war rooms, st paul's cathedral, tower of london or explore less well-known districts like bermondsey, shoreditch or spitalfields. out of london windsor castle, stonehenge, salisbury, bath, dover, leeds castle, hever castle are a few of the many wonderful places that can be easily reached in a day trip. it would be my great pleasure to welcome you to my city and i hope to see you soon. . . . liz covid 19 notice - i have been certified "good to go" by visit england. this means that i am fully compliant with best practice to look after my guests on our tours                                                                                                                                  , popular portsmouth private tours.

Explore England's naval history through its iconic ships. Portsmouth Historical Dockyard is home to The Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and HMS M33. The Mary Rose (1511) was Henry VIII's flagship that sunk in the Battle of the Solent against the French in 1545. HMS Victory was Admiral Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in c.1805. HMS Warrior is the world's first iron-clad warship, built in c.1860. HMS M33 is one of only 3 remaining WWI ships left in the world.

“ Nice but not up to expectations ”

Pleasant but not the level of l knowledge or expertise we hoped for. We had expected a guide with a deeper passion for and knowledge of English nautical history. We learned more for overhearing other guides then from Andy.

Fred W.

Dear Fred, Thank you very much for booking a tour with me, and for your very generous gratuity. It is regrettable when expectation does not align with reality. The level of expertise that you expected could only realistically be obtained from a museum curator / expert; something that I never claim to be. The full-time staff located on the specific ships have an encyclopaedic knowledge, and therefore they would know the more obscure facts like how Nelson liked to dry his feet on the rugs in his cabin. I hope that your head has recovered from the low decks on HMS Victory. Have a lovely rest of your stay in England. Best wishes, Andrew

Philly-Raised Singer-Songwriter Is Unabashedly Herself on Opening Night of Her New Tour

“I am kind of just doing whatever the fuck I want to do. … I’m not really in the mood anymore to do things just because that’s what everyone else does.” —Lizzy McAlpine

On February 20, Lizzy McAlpine hopped on Instagram Live for the first time in a while — the first time, notably, since her song “ceilings” found immense mainstream acclaim through TikTok. McAlpine, born and raised in Philadelphia, is no stranger to an internet audience, initially gaining traction through YouTube and SoundCloud uploads of her music. After her debut album Give Me a Minute , McAlpine released the album that would go on to change her life: Five Seconds Flat , which put her in front of the world’s discerning eye. Opposed to her label pushing her to release remixes or features on “ceilings,” the sudden fame caused her to run closer to herself, feeling uncomfortable with straying away from her authentic artistry.

This decision led to her deciding to go about her upcoming tour differently than before, too. “I’m doing tour the way that I want to do it…. I made this album with this band and I’m taking them on tour with me … because it makes sense to me to do that.”

It’s night one of McAlpine’s The Older Tour , which started in San Diego on April 21 and will wind its way through the U.S., Canada, and Europe through the fall, which means that nobody in the audience has any idea what she’s going to play. “I hope she plays ‘Angelina.’ I doubt she will, though,” a disgruntled fan laments behind me, as her friend laughs.

The setup of the stage looked like that of a recording studio. There were light brown walls, a door, a variety of homey lamps, chairs, instruments galore, and a window that mimicked a control room. Once the lights went down, several band members walked onto the stage, and all sat in a line facing the audience. McAlpine walked through the door last, and they all put on headphones to simulate them recording together.

McAlpine started the show with “The Elevator” and “Come Down Soon,” as the set list slowly unraveled into the track list of McAlpine’s latest album, Older . Highlights included the single “I Guess,” which most of the audience already knew the words to; “Staying,” with its sprawling, atmospherically reaching outro that the band went all in on; and “All Falls Down” with the lyric “23, and a sold-out show,” that made the audience scream in glee.

McAlpine didn’t address the audience much during the set, but at one point she beamed and exclaimed, “I’m gonna start to cry, so we should just play this song,” leading her into lead single “Older,” which she played more acoustically. The crowd chanted along to the outro, building in volume along with the band.

For fans of five seconds flat, McAlpine interspersed “doomsday,” “ceilings,” and “chemtrails.” The song “doomsday” was a natural choice to include in the set, with its studio recording sounding like a live band, while “ceilings” was reimagined. McAlpine sang it with a tenderness that did the song justice: slower, more spacey, and gentle. Then “chemtrails” followed “March,” both emotionally devastating tunes McAlpine wrote for her late father.

McAlpine offered some insights into the songs on Apple Music: “This song is about my dad, who passed away in 2020. Every 13th track on all of my albums is about him. He passed away on the 13th of March, and my first album came out on the 13th, and there were 13 tracks, and the 13th track was about him. I didn’t really plan that, but it created a tradition. I don’t really write about my dad with anyone because it’s just really heavy and personal, but I wrote this song with [songwriter/composer] Ethan [Gruska], who made me feel safe and open.”

It was a beautiful tribute, as the ethereal sounds at the end of “March” led into the faint vocals of “chemtrails,” a one-two punch analyzing memories and grief, coming to a head as McAlpine sighed “I miss it, I miss you.”

Toward the end of the show, McAlpine, overwhelmed, took the time to again tell the audience that she was so overjoyed she “almost cried when [she] first came out.” She also explained that they made the set look quite similar to the studio she recorded her album in, and expressed appreciation and praise for her band. It rang especially genuinely and intimately that McAlpine was attempting to bring the audience into her recording space, and it felt as though throughout the show you were peeking into her and her band’s sacred and innermost creative moments.

A rarity in modern day artists with the advent of quick musical virality on social platforms, The Older Tour is an example of how McAlpine doubled down on herself instead of feeding into what others wanted of her. And clearly — from her thoughtful set to a sold-out show of adoring fans — it appears the risk was worth it.
