Established in 2010, Pinto Art Museum was born from the art collection of its founder, neurologist Dr. Joven Cuanang. From the museum’s name pinto , which translates to ‘door’, the aim is to bridge diverse cultures and perspectives through arts.

5. Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs

Officially declared a National Cultural Treasure in 1973 by the National Museum of the Philippines, the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs site offers a glimpse into the prehistoric Philippines.

The ancient carvings are preserved on a rock wall along the boundary of Angono and Binangonan. A tunnel leading to the petroglyphs is located a few meters off the road (Col. Guido Road). The rock wall is protected by a fence but you can still marvel at the carvings from a wooden viewing deck. This was first discovered by national artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco in 1965.

6. Masungi Georeserve

Opened to the public in 2015, the Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area managed and protected by concerned and passionate groups and individuals. It aims to promote a mutually healthy coexistence between nature and people and to educate visitors about the importance of conservation through sustainable geotourism.

Located on the southern part of the Sierra Madre mountain range, the georeserve has piqued the curiosity of weekend warriors, especially those who are passionate about the environment and those interested in geology.

The whole area cradles limestone caves, rock formations, karst cliffs, and rainforests. The park has eco-trails, rope courses, and hanging bridges that connect some of the key points inside the conservation area. The Sapot (cobweb) and the Duyan (hammock) are two of the most popular features inside the park.

The park also has several viewpoints, from where you can admire stunning views of the mountains, the park, and even Laguna de Bay in some spots. 7. Hinulugang Taktak

Designated as a national park in 1990, the Hinulugang Taktak Protected Landscape covers three hectares of verdant forest. It was named after the Hinulugang Taktak waterfalls, which is obviously the highlight of the park.

Easily accessible from the town center, it is an iconic landmark in Antipolo and said to be one of the most visited national parks in the country. The trails leading to the falls have been developed to make it easier for tourists, especially seniors and PWDs, to access.

8. Daranak Falls

The 14-meter high Daranak Falls is one of the popular natural attractions in Tanay and a favored summer destination for locals and tourists alike.

Located at the foot of densely forested Tanay mountains, the picturesque area — with Daranak falls as its centerpiece — features cascading waters, rivers, ponds, and a huge natural pool. There are picnic sheds and tables for rent.

9. Batlag Falls

Not too far from Daranak Falls is another set of cascades with swimming holes — Batlag Falls .

You just need to trek uphill and deeper into the thick jungle to reach this beauty. The cool water rushes down from a limestone cliff. The water basins (one shallow and one relatively deeper) serve as swimming areas. Try to explore farther from the main pools and you might find a less crowded swimming spot.

The best time to go is morning when there are fewer people. Bring your own food and clean as you go.

10. Mt. Daraitan

Part of the Sierra Madre mountain range, Mount Daraitan straddles the town of Tanay in Rizal and the town of General Nakar in Quezon province.

Daraitan is characterized by lush forests and limestone formations, which dominate the summit. From the zenith, enjoy the breathtaking view of the snake-like form of Tinipak River and the Sierra Madre mountain range.

There are two trails — a short-but-challenging trail and a long-but-relaxed trail. Going down, you can either trace back your trail or take the trail down to Tinipak River . You can check out the nearby cave if you still have time.

Camping is allowed. If you go on a day hike, please be there early because there is a limited number of people allowed per day . Those who didn’t make it on time will be directed to other peaks like Mount Binutasan, Mount Lugang, or Mount Maynoba.

11. Tinipak River

This mountain river meanders below the Sierra Madre range. This natural attraction is a usual side trip destination for those hiking Mount Daraitan. The clear water flows through smooth limestone rocks and boulders.

Tourists enjoy taking a dip and swimming in the refreshing water. Not far from the main swimming area is a cave with a small cascade forming a natural pool inside.

12. Pililla Wind Farm

Encompassing over 4,500 hectares of the hilly landscape, the Pililla Wind Farm flaunts its colossal wind turbines that tower over the landscape. All 27 wind turbines stand like gigantic sentinels, providing an incredibly scenic tourist destination near Manila and, more importantly, electricity.

Managed by Alternergy Philippine Holdings Corporation (APHC), the whole wind farm is said to produce almost 150 Gigawatt hours of electricity annually.

Note that there’s not much shade here, so if you are visiting at noon or early afternoon, make sure you bring an umbrella or any protection from the sun. There’s a designated view deck where you can view the turbines at a higher altitude and a small information building.

If you want to view the turbines from the hill across the viewing deck, you have to pay P10 to trek up the hill. Even from afar, they are a sight to behold, especially during sunset and early morning. The place is also popular among bikers.

13. Higantes Festival

Celebrated annually in the town of Angono, Higantes Festival is a two-day feast known for its giant papier-mâché puppets, which represent the malevolent feudal lords (hacienda owners) during the Spanish regime era. Eventually, it developed into a celebration for Pope St. Clement I.

During the festival, the titan-like papier-mâché puppets, representing the barangays of Angono, are paraded throughout the streets.

14. Botong Francisco’s Ancestral House

National Artist for Visual Art Carlos “Botong” Francisco is renowned for his vivid paintings depicting folk scenes and values. His works serve as significant reminders and records of our culture and heritage.

The ancestral house was opened to the public in the 1970s with no definite opening hours, making the masterpieces and memoirs accessible to the public, a symbolic gesture of offering himself, a National Artist, through his works to the Filipino people.

The highlight is the artist’s intact studio where some of his earlier works and sketches are displayed, along with his well-preserved personal belongings and collections. As a muralist, he pioneered this art form in the Philippines.

Aside from being an artist, he is also a scriptwriter whose notable works include Manuel Conde’s, Genghis Khan. The ancestral house/museum is managed by his grandson, artist Carlos “Totong” Francisco II.

Home of prominent artists and museums, Angono is hailed as the “Art Capital of the Philippines”. Visiting national artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco’s ancestral house will lead you to a stretch of road marked by street art — the Doña Aurora Street, also known as the Angono Mural Street .

Charlie Anorico, Gerry Batang, and Ebong Pinpino are the artists behind the murals and sculptured walls flanking Doña Aurora Street. These murals are based on the masterpieces of Botong Francisco with texts from the song “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”, which is another cultural treasure composed by national artist Maestro Lucio San Pedro .

16. Bahay na Bato

Said to be the oldest house in Pililla, the centuries-old Bahay na Bato (House of Stone) will transport you back to the Spanish colonial period where this type of architecture became prevalent.

It is located near St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church. The combination of stone masonry and woodwork for both the exterior and the interior are intact, surviving the test of time. Aside from seeing antique furniture and architectural gems, the place is a popular stop for photo sessions.

17. Calinawan Cave

Calinawan Cave is a must-visit not only for adventure seekers but also for history buffs.

The multi-level cave system harbors remarkable rock formations (stalagmites and stalactites), delighting spelunkers and curious travelers. The first two levels are quite easy to explore, good for beginners and kids. However, the succeeding levels require scrambling and getting through small openings. It’s even more challenging when the grounds are wet, making it slippery. Wear comfortable footwear and bring extra clothes, just in case.

The cave is believed to be one of the underground meeting places of the revolutionary katipuneros , plotting steps to overthrow the Spanish colonizers. It is best to explore with a guide. 18. Balaw Balaw Restaurant’s Soup No. 5

Balaw Balaw Restaurant serves Filipino cuisine, boasting twelve kinds of sinigang and exotic fares on the menu. 19. Treasure Mountain

Effortless sea of clouds near Manila! That’s what pulls campers and day-trippers to this high-altitude educational campsite.

If you’ve always wanted to admire a sea of clouds in person but you don’t have the time, energy, stamina, or interest in hiking, this is a great alternative! Assuming the weather cooperates, that is. There are times when visitors won’t get to see the sea of clouds because it’s rainy (or other reasons), but the place still offers a panoramic view of the lush Sierra Madre mountain range.

Several viewpoints can be found inside the camp, so just choose your spot, Be careful when you climb some rock formations and cliffs as some of them are sharp and slippery. You can also try the rope courses installed within the campsite, ride the ATV, or swim in the pool. There are restrooms and a small restaurant near the entrance.

If you are camping overnight, you can bring your own tent and food — a corkage fee of P350 for food and P50 per alcoholic bottle. Pack some warmers and your trusty jacket because the weather up there is usually chilly. Please dispose of your trash properly. Note that the sea of clouds usually occurs between 5AM and 8AM.

One of Antipolo’s historical and religious landmarks is the Antipolo Cathedral , officially named National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage and also the Immaculate Conception Parish.

The church was completed in the 17th century but has undergone several reconstructions and renovations over the years. It houses the wooden statue of Mary. It attracts huge crowds, mostly pilgrims and devotees, during Holy Week and the Pilgrimage Season.

Don’t leave without a quick stop at the Victory Pasalubong Center just next to the cathedral and grab some suman (sticky rice cake wrapped in leaves, usually banana leaves), kasuy (cashew nuts), and other local products!

23. Palo Alto Falls

Located within the 200-hectare Palo Alto Leisure and Residential Estates , the 60-foot Palo Alto Falls is another cascade destination to add to your list of attractions near Manila.

Managed by the Sta. Lucia Land, the falls area is open to the public. At the entrance, you will have to take more than 200 steps to reach the falls. The cascade’s water basin, bordered with cemented boulders and stones, serves as a swimming area, with another pool right below it.

The area is well-maintained with cottages and tables for rent and concrete steps and paths. Although development is apparent, it doesn’t take away from the beauty of nature. This is popular among motorcycle riders and cyclists too.

24. Blanco Family Art Museum

Jose “Pitok” V. Blanco is the godson and prodigy of the late national artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco. Together with his equally talented wife Loreto “Loring” Perez-Blanco and their seven children, they formed the illustrious Family of Painters , whose works celebrate Filipino culture, history, and traditions.

After their family exhibit at the National Museum in 1978, the family decided to make their paintings accessible to the public. It was first established in 1980, but the actual museum was launched in 1990. It houses a huge collection of the Blanco family’s masterpieces.

History of Rizal

The town of Rizal was formerly called Tarumpitao Point which was then a part of Quezon Municipality. On April 14, 1983, it became an independent municipality be virtue of Batas Pambansa Blg. 386 with the name Marcos. On April 17, 1988, it was renamed Rizal in honor of the country’s National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

1. Masungi Georeserve

If you’re chasing for fun, adventure, and thrill all rolled into one, Masungi Georeserve should make up to your bucket list. It’s a top Rizal tourist spot, and because of very high demand, you need to reserve your slot a month or two in advance.

Masungi Georeserve offers you a memorable trek into the Sierra Madre wilderness and chance on unique flora and fauna species. Then, you’ll come close to close to massive limestone rock formations clad in lush vegetation.

What makes this attraction in Rizal unique are the different rope trails you can walk through as you relish the breathtaking views.

2. Mount Sinai

Oops. This isn’t in the Middle East but somewhere in Rizal. But why did the locals refer to the mountain as such? Well, it’s because it hosts what used to be the world’s Largest Ten Commandments Stone Tablet Scripture.

From here, you’ll get jaw-dropping views of the vast Sierra Madre mountain range. It is one of the emerging tourist destinations in Rizal.

3. Daranak Falls

Daranak Falls is one of the most iconic Tanay, Rizal tourist spots, owing to its accessibility and laid-back setting. Both locals and tourists especially nature-lovers, frequent here because of the rustic environment.

The falls measures around 20 meters high and cascades on a beautiful pool with turquoise waters. Lust forests surround Daranak Falls, giving it an enchanting view.

You can jump or dive from one of the surrounding cliffs or boulders towards the deep pool.

4. Calinawan Cave

If you want more after enjoying Daranak Falls, then check out Calinawan Cave. It is just a 20-minute drive from the falls. Prepare to be amazed by jaw-dropping stalactite and stalagmite rock formations inside.

Some formations, however, lost their glory because of human activities. Hopefully, the local authorities will revitalize measures to protect the cave. It’s also one of the emerging tourist spots in Tanay, Rizal.

5. Mt Parawagan

Mt Parawagan is an ideal mountain for newbie hikers. It has well-established trails that run on gentle terrains. Many hikers started their training here before climbing more difficult mountains in the Philippines and elsewhere.

From the summit of Mt Parawagan, you’ll get panoramic views of Metro Manila and the varied landscapes of Wawa.

6. Inday Nelly’s Mystical Cave

Local stories have it that the cave has healing powers because inside, you’ll find rock formations depicting religious or mystical figures. It is named after Inday Nelly, who popularized the cave.

But whether you’re into spirituality or not, you should check out the beautiful stalactite and stalagmite rock formations inside.

7. Batlag Falls

If you’re into less touristy destinations in Rizal, you should come here and relish the pristine wilderness.

8. Mount Daraitan

If your feet are aching you for an adventure, then trek your way to Mount Daraitan . From its summit, you’ll glimpse at breathtaking views of the Sierra Madre, the longest mountain range in the Philippines.

If you’re lucky, you’ll glimpse of the breathtaking sea of clouds carpeting the mountainsides. The mountain is also rich with flora and fauna and it is one of the province’s protected landscapes. Help protect and preserve the mountain by leaving no garbage behind and refraining from picking flowers or orchids.

You’ll also catch sight of the beautiful Daraitan River snaking its way among the lush mountains. Massive limestone rock formations abound in every direction, and you can chance on exotic flora species on the trail.

9. Tinipak River

Some hikers to Mt Daraitan brave a challenging traverse to Tinipak River, one of the most pristine tourist spots in Rizal. Aside from the turquoise waters emanating from the abundant forests upstream, the river has stunning limestone rock formations.

There are multiple pools where you can have a rejuvenating swim. Today, the proposed Mega-Kaliwa dam is threatening the river and its biodiversity.

Hopefully, concerted efforts will lead to the project’s cancellation, especially that the surrounding forest is one of the province’s ecological frontiers.

10. Tinipak Cave

Before or after swimming or viewing Tinipak River, you can proceed to Tinipak Cave, one of the many found in Rizal. Inside, you’ll find stunning stalactite and stalagmite rock formations.

While you’re here, get creative at what the various rocks represent. Bats also inhabit some parts of the cave, indicating the rich biodiversity. There is also a running stream with pockets of pools.

11. Palo-Alto Falls

Palo Alto Falls is one of the emerging tourist spots in Baras, Rizal, nestled on a 200-hectare residential estate. It measures around 60 meters high and cascades on a circular pool with entrancing, turquoise waters.

The waters emanate from pristine forests upstream, home to different wildlife. There are basic amenities you can rent, such as cottages, grilling areas, and picnic tables. Palo-Alto Falls makes up for an excellent family weekend getaway.

12. Mt Tagapo

Mt Tagapo is another hiking tourist attraction in Rizal that is ideal for beginners. You can easily assault its grass-covered summit in less than an hour. From here, you’ll catch sight of the vast Laguna de Bay and the surrounding mountain ranges and plains.

13. Sangab Cave

Sangab Cave is also another off-beaten Rizal tourist spot. It’s a mystical cave hidden amidst green vegetation. Not only will you enjoy the limestone rock formations inside but also get to relish the beauty of the surrounding forest.

That is home to a variety of wildlife species, including flora wonders that will satisfy your quest for an adventure.

14. Mt Nagpatong

Mt Nagpatong is known for a massive limestone rock formation standing on its summit. You can climb it to catch better views of the surrounding landscapes.

It’s also a good viewpoint for glimpsing of the sunrise and the sea of clouds. If you want to see these, start trekking by 4 AM. Mt Nagpatong is one of the most frequented hiking tourist spots in Rizal.

15. Hinulugang Taktak Falls

Hinulugang Taktak Falls used to be a magnificent wonder with pure and crystal-clear waters, creating rainbows. But the growth of settlements upstream has caused the gradual deterioration of the river feeding the falls.

That has rendered it unfit for swimming, so you could only take a picture with it as the background.

Hopefully, the local authorities will continue cleaning the river and addressing pollution sources to bring it back to its former beauty and bounty.

16. Angono Forest Park

Angono Forest Park is one of the remaining natural reserves in Rizal and one of its off-beaten tourist spots. As you explore it, you’ll chance on a variety of endangered species such as wild pigs, snakes, and wild ducks. Plus, you’ll get to see orchids and other blooming flowers.

This is a must-see tourist destination in Rizal if you’re chasing extreme adventure or thrill. There is no entrance fee. But do donate some amount as that goes a long way in protecting the forest.

17. Mt Binacayan

Another great spot to chance on a mind-blowing view of the sunrise and the sea of clouds is Mt Binacayan. Although it’s generally a minor climb, you still need to prepare as you’ll trail on challenging terrains.

But it’s all worth it as you relish the breathtaking views from the summit. When you do chance on a sea of clouds, you’ll feel like you’re floating among them.

18. Pamitian Cave

Pamitian Cave is a walking distance from Wawa Dam; thus, it makes up for a good side trip for adventurers.

Located in the scenic foothills of grand Sierra Madre, the cave is said to be where Bonifacio initiated new members of the Katipunan movement.

Bonifacio is a Filipino hero credited for the liberation of the Philippines from the 300-years of Spanish rule. His charcoal writings on the cave’s wall are still visible up to this day. It’s, therefore, one of the historical tourist spots in Rizal.

19. Tanay Church

Otherwise known as Saint Ildefonsus of Toledo Parish Church, Tanay Church is one of Rizal’s popular pilgrimage sites for Catholics. It houses a bone relic of San Ildefonso.

It’s no wonder why thousands come here to pray every year. The church also boasts of a stunning architecture dating back to the Spanish years.

20. Antipolo Cathedral

Otherwise called as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Voyage, the Antipolo Cathedral is a recognizable landmark with its iconic dome. It’s a favorite pilgrimage site among Catholics, especially during Holy Week.

The Cathedral has been a witness to significant events and milestones that shaped Rizal province.

21. Boso-Boso Church

Also called The Nuestra Senora de La Annunciata Parish, the Boso-Boso Church is a recognized historical tourist spot in Rizal. Built during the 16th century, the Church survived various calamities, including wars, fires, and earthquakes.

Although in recent years, the church management did some renovations, they still maintain the original design.

22. Regina Rica

Regina Rica is another popular pilgrimage site in Rizal. It has a huge statue of The Virgin Mary with lush landscapes. It’s a perfect place for spiritual seekers or those who want to nourish their faith in God.

Others come here for meditation because of the rustic setting. It’s a must-see site during Catholic holidays such as Holy Week.

23. Pinto Art Museum

Pinto Art Museum is one of the most frequented tourist spots/destinations in Rizal. It boasts of architectural designs and landscapes reminiscent of the Mediterranean region in Europe.

Here, you’ll find six art galleries with fascinating paintings, art installations, and sculptures made from priced materials. Sure, the museum also showcases both modern and old Filipino artworks.

What I love about this museum is that artworks are not enclosed inside glasses. That means you can have a close look at each of them and appreciate the details. Just don’t touch it, please. Oh yes, you can also take pictures unlike in most other museums.

24. Bahay Na Bato

It’s a building dating back to the Spanish regime; therefore, it features Western architecture as well. As you tour inside, you’ll feel like you’re traveling back to the colonial era and experiencing their daily life.

You’ll learn much about the past culture here and, of course, the rich history.

25. Casa Santa Museum

If you want another bizarre Christmas experience, then check out Casa Santa Museum, a top tourist spot in Rizal. It displays thousands of Santa Claus motifs and themes coming from various countries. Its collection is one of the most extensive in the world.

You’ll surely love strolling here and seeing the different faces of Santa Claus. Before visiting, however, make sure you set prior arrangements via their website or Facebook Page.

26. Angono Petroglyphs

Considered as the oldest of its kind in the Philippines, Angono Petroglyphs gives us a picture of the country’s first inhabitants. It dates back to as far as 3000 B.C.!

If you want to know more about how these ancient people lived and their way of communication, you should come to see these priceless petroglyphs.

27. Avilon Zoo

I’m not fond of zoos because, generally, this industry has caused the endangerment of a lot of wildlife species.

But there are zoos that have been advocating for wildlife conservation, and some became refuge sites for animals that lost their homes to deforestation and other human activities.

I hope Avilon Zoo is doing that. Thankfully, I heard that the animals there are well taken care of. Still, we hope that they will soon be released to the wild since that is their home.

28. Nemiranda Arthouse and Gallery

If you’re an art savvy, you’ll surely find this a perfect escape to your world. Most of the artworks displayed here feature Filipino folklore characters, including gods and unseen spirits.

You’ll learn a lot about the rich stories of the country’s different provinces. Yes, it’s not only the Greeks that have stories about deities.

Our country is rich with such, and this gallery will make you realize that. It’s one of the must-see tourist destinations in Rizal for art lovers.

29. Pililla Wind Farm

You don’t need to travel to Ilocos Norte to glimpse of giant windmills. If you’re coming from Manila, ride your way to Rizal, and you’ll find 27 giant wind turbines scattered on rolling landscapes. Collectively, these power thousands of households in the province.

Personally, this is one of my favorite tourist spots in Rizal because it solidifies the campaign to transition to renewable energy. From here, you can also catch scenic views of Rizal’s plains and the Laguna De Bay.

30. PACEM Eco-Park

PACEM means Peace And CARE For Earth Ministry. It’s one of the best tourist attractions/destinations in Rizal. It features a mini-forest, organic gardens, a butterfly collection, wildlife sanctuaries, and much more. It’s a perfect getaway for those who wish to experience spirituality and serenity.

31. Jala-Jala Sunflower Farm

You’ll not only find the iconic sunflower in the Cordillera mountains but also in Rizal. You’ll surely love taking pictures with the blooming flowers and enjoy the scenic views here. If you want to grow your pots of sunflowers, you can buy seedlings and planting materials here.

32. Wawa Dam

Considered one of the oldest dams in the Philippines, the Wawa dam was the first of its kind supplying Manila. With the construction of the Angat dam, however, the Wawa dam has been abandoned.

Today, it’s becoming a tourist attraction in Rizal because of scenic mountain and river views. You can pose on the base of Wawa Falls as the cascading waters give you a rejuvenating massage.

Or try boating with bamboo rafts and swimming on the crystal-clear waters. There are boulders all around, which you can use as diving or jumping platforms.

St. John the Baptist Parish Church in Taytay

In 1579, Franciscan missionaries arrived in Taytay to establish a parish. They built a chapel near the shores of Laguna de Bay, named “Visita de Sta. A new church made of stone was built in 1599 and completed in 1601, making it the first church built by the Jesuits out of stone outside Manila. However, a typhoon blew its roofing away in 1632, but the townspeople helped to replace it. Despite this, the church sustained significant damage in 1639 when the Chinese set fire to it during their revolt against Spanish authorities.

This waterfall in Tanay is probably the top-of-mind destination for many who hear ‘Rizal.’ This 14m high fall has a natural pool and picturesque views. If it doesn’t rain, the water of the pool is a distinct blue. Take the plunge and douse the afternoon heat after taking a few pictures. You can have snacks and drinks here, but make sure to leave no trace.

Days were spent searching for the diver's body until it's on an island with imposing rock formations and beautiful white sand. The deceased diver's last name was Shimizu, and the island was named after him.

The world's largest leper colony in the 1900s, Culion is a town that's well-suited for people wanting to try heritage tours .

Cut off from the rest of the world, its former inhabitants – including Spanish priests and caregivers - lived among themselves and were isolated until it was declared leprosy-free in 2006.

Sitting off the shores of Balabac town in the southwestern portion of Palawan is Onok Island, a peaceful, privately-owned island surrounded by clear waters and covered with a forest of palm trees. From the island also stems a sandbar that you can walk on when the tide is low. To get here, you will need to go on a boat ride from Rio Tuba town. 

Upon reaching the island, you will dock set foot on soft powdery sand. You can then walk around the perimeter of the island to find the perfect spot to lay down and sunbathe or head over to the wooden walkway that leads to wooden huts built on stilts. After settling down in your preferred spot, it's time to get in the water for a leisurely swim. If you want to see the marine life in the area, you can rent paddle boats and go towards deeper spots where you can snorkel. 

Under the waves, you will find coral reefs, schools of fish, and some giant clams. When you return to the island to rest, you can also enjoy the unobstructed view of the pristine sea.

Manguao Lake sits in the town of Taytay in the northern region of Palawan Island. This 640-hectare lake is known to be one of the largest freshwater lakes in the Philippines. Bordering its blue waters are lush forests that offer beautiful scenery to tourists and locals, making it a great spot for a peaceful getaway. 

Inside the lake, you can find 3 endemic fish species. Meanwhile, the surrounding lush forests are home to about 136 birds and 29 kinds of mammals. Birdwatchers often flock to the lake to try and spot rarer or endemic species such as the Palawan peacock pheasant, Palawan hornbill, and Philippine duck. In light of the lake's rich biodiversity, it is also recognized as a Municipal Conservation area and Ecotourism Zone.

While the lake's waters are calm and may seem very inviting, the local government does not recommend swimming in it during the dry season due to the cyanobacteria that bloom there. Instead, it is safer to wade in the waters during the rainy season. Aside from being a great place to stop and relax, the lake is a well-known fishing spot among locals. 

Fort Santa Isabel, which is commonly known as the Taytay Fort, is a structure that dates back to 1667, when it was first built out of wood. It was named in honor of the Queen Isabella II of Spain. Eventually, it was rebuilt using coral stone and was finally completed in 1738. This coastal fortification mainly served as a way to protect Taytay from Muslim warrior-raiders during the Spanish reign in the Philippines. Back then, the Spanish army had fired cannons from the fortress whenever the Muslim forces would sail towards the small town. 

A bastion or garitas is located at each corner of the fort. Aside from serving as a means of protection, the structure is also recognized as an important part of the local heritage, especially religion. Etched into some portions of the stone walls are Roman Catholic scenes and figures that were highly revered during the Spanish reign. 

In 2018, the local government collaborated with the National Historical Commission to restore this grand structure to its former glory. 

25. Punta Sebaring Beach (Balabac)

Punta Sebaring Beach is another white-sand beach that rivals the beauty of its more famous counterparts, such as Boracay Island's White Beach. This hidden gem sits along the edge of Bugsuk Island, which is part of Balabac, the southernmost town of Palawan. As Punta Sebaring Beach is located in a more remote region of the province, you will need to take a boat from the mainland to reach it. 

When you finally arrive at the beach, you will immediately see its powdery white sand go on for miles. The beach's beauty has remained unspoiled as there are no commercial establishments on the island nor along the shore. Past the beach, you will find towering palm trees and the local community. Make your way across the beach when the tide is low to find a stunning sandbar that stems from Punta Sebaring. As the water laps the sand, it gives the entire sandbar a rippled texture, adding to the already scenic appeal of the area. 

While there are no hotels or resorts on the island, you can coordinate with the local government of Balabac before your visit if you wish to spend the night here.

The Cuyo Fort stands in the center of the historic Cuyo Island, which is located in the northeastern waters of Palawan Island. The municipality of Cuyo is the oldest town in the province and served as Palawan's second capital from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. During the Spanish colonization era in the Philippines, Spanish forces constructed the fort to serve as a fortress from attacks by the Moro people. It was completed in 1680 and was made out of stone and mortar. Aside from providing protection, this naval structure also housed the town's church, adoration chapel, and convent, making it one of the most unique forts in the country. 

Along with the church, a belfry was also erected inside the fort's premises, along with watchtowers. Today, the fortress' walls measure up to ten meters high, and you can even walk along the renovated portions of the wall to get a better view of the island and its surroundings. The church also remains a significant part of the community and is the venue for the town's annual Feast of St. Augustine, which takes place every 28th of August.

Another popular tourist attraction on Cuyo Island is Mt. Aguado. This towering mountain is covered with lush forests that house various species of birds and mammals and is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. However, the mountain does not only serve as an ecotourism site. It is also best known for the life-sized statues that depict the Stations of Cross, a testament to the strong Spanish and Catholic influence on the island. 

These statues begin at the foot of the mountain continue all the way to the peak. Devout Catholics make the pilgrimage to the mountain annually as part of Holy Week rites observed in Cuyo. At the end of the trail, you will be rewarded with a 360-degree view of the whole island. From here, you can even see the surrounding islands that also make up the Cuyo Archipelago. 

To protect the town of Cagayancillo from invaders in the late 16th century, the Spanish forces that colonized the area at the time decided to build the Cagayancillo Fort. This naval fortress, however, took over a hundred years to complete and was only fully constructed in the early 18th century under the leadership of a Spanish priest. In contrast to other forts built in Palawan under the Spanish regime, this one was built using sea rocks and limestones.

1. Kayangan Lake

2. Barracuda Lake

This lake is named after a sizable barracuda skeleton once discovered in its depths. But don’t worry because though its name is “Barracuda,” there are not many barracudas in these waters, except for its resident barracuda that likes to conceal itself among the rocks at the lake’s far side. Yes, it will remind you of Scotland’s Loch Ness monster, indeed.

3. Twin Lagoon

The only way to get to the Twin Lagoon is by boat. If you wish for a more tranquil trip, you can ride a private boat, and you’ll reach this place early in the morning before the crowds arrive. But that does not mean you can’t take a boat ride with other tourists. 

Quite reminiscent of Italy’s Capri island, the Twin Lagoon got its name from the two bodies of water separated by stunning limestone cliffs on one of the many islets making up Palawan’s Calamian archipelago. 4. Siete Pecados

9. Big Lagoon

Located off the eastern coast of El Nido’s Miniloc Island, Big Lagoon is famous for its vibrantly-hued waters and picturesque limestone rocks greeting you over the horizon.

Your boat will approach this lagoon around a rock fronting a smaller lagoon. From here at the entrance, you can linger for a while and marvel at the Gatorade-blue pool.

As it’s shallowest, you can take a plunge and swim leisurely alongside sea turtles, or snorkel a bit farther to see some charming corals underneath you.

10. Small Lagoon

You bet that if there’s a “Big Lagoon,” there has to be a “Small Lagoon.” Right, and Small Lagoon, being the more cramped version of the former, lets you pass through a narrow entrance that you need to plunge into or ride a kayak and go through a gap on a wall made of limestone, so you can see the turquoise waters and limestone cliffs inside.  

Then, you can either swim or kayak around this lagoon’s waters, and enjoy its calmness pulsating in harmony with the wildlife.

11. Shimizu Island

Shimizu Island is part of one of the most popular island-hopping tour packages in Palawan, which takes you here, and to Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, and Secret Lagoon, among others.

14. Taraw Cliff

Continuing on the list of the top tourist attractions in Palawan with Taraw Cliff. If you fancy trekking, this is for you. But, since the trek features sharp rocks in high heat and humidity, though a short climb, it is not for everyone.

15. Seven Commandos Beach

This beach got its name from the seven soldiers who were once stranded there. Seven Commandos Beach is known for its fine white sands lined with towering coconut trees standing at the foot of gorgeous limestone cliffs.

Seven Commandos Beach is usually part of your El Nido island hopping tour . You can swim, snorkel, play beach volleyball, and indulge yourself with refreshing beverages, as this is the only island in El Nido, alongside its high-end resorts, with bars. Food is also served on this beach.

16. Puerto Princesa Underground River

If there’s one destination that you should never ever miss when you plan to visit Palawan, it has to be the Puerto Princesa Underground River . Apart from being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this subterranean river national park is often featured in school books, so you know this place is really important. 

As you wear your life vest and your protective helmet, a boat will take you inside the cave where you will get to see the most breathtaking cave formations, stalactites, and stalagmites.  Among this underground river’s distinguishing attributes is that it directly emerges into the sea, with its lower portion subject to tidal influences. It also serves as a habitat for some wildlife.

17. Luli Island

Luli Island is one of the three important islands you will visit in Honda Bay. Honda Bay has 16 islands in total, but only three are open to tourists.

Curious about where the island’s name came from? Well, it is taken from the first syllables of two Filipino words, lulubog (“to sink”) and lilitaw (“to surface”), as the island’s sandbar appears and disappears depending on the tides.

It is beautiful here. You’ll be able to enjoy Luli Island’s powdery cream sand and clear emerald waters. You may also rent cottages and snorkeling equipment. 

18. Cowrie Island

Cowrie Island is another of the three islands you’ll be visiting in Honda Bay, the others being Luli Island and Starfish Island. 

The island got its name from the cowrie shells scattered around the area. Cowries are a type of sea snail.

19. Ugong Rock Adventures

Best paired with your visit to the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Ugong Rock Adventures involves climbing Ugong Rock, an enormous moss-covered limestone formation where you will see such a glorious view of the mountains and the surrounding rice fields from the summit. 

But right before you begin climbing, you’ll be able to see equally astounding untouched mineral deposits in caves. After you’re done taking in everything that the rock’s summit has to offer, you can choose to descend Ugong Rock by a single-rider zipline with a 71-meter drop.

20. Long Beach

San Vicente is an exquisite municipality located on the northwestern side of the island of Palawan. If you are passing by in this part of the province, don’t forget to visit Long Beach. 

Long Beach is regarded as the longest white sand beach in the Philippines and the second-longest across Southeast Asia, hence its name.

You can take a dip into its crystal clear waters, or take a walk to explore the beach. If you just wish to relax, you can simply lounge by the ocean, read a book, listen to the waves, or chat with the friendly locals.

21. Bato Ni Ningning

Another must-visit tourist spot in San Vicente is Bato Ni Ningning, touted as the municipality’s “rock star.” The place refers to the iconic rock sitting on top of a hill in San Vicente’s Barangay Sto. Niño. Its name came from a TV show featuring a character named “Ningning” and how this area where the boulder is became her playground.

Activities to do at Bato Ni Ningning include climbing atop the hill, of course. You can either use a motorbike to ascend or simply walk. The neighborhood’s community also serves up a meal usually consisting of fresh seafood and barbecue which you can enjoy.

22. Boayan Island

Boayan Island is the largest island in San Vicente. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here where you can immerse yourself in views of the area from the island’s higher elevations. 

You may also explore its reefs, and many tourists who have visited this place say the waters are warm, clean, and peaceful. There are also areas where you can play volleyball and badminton. 

The island’s residents can also prepare food and perform music for you. But those tourists also say you must ready yourself for the pesky sandflies that could bite you. They can be allergic, so be sure to bring an insect repellant with you.

23. Onuk Island

Onuk Island is another of the province’s paradises located in Balabac . Balabac is a municipality in the south of Palawan. 

This island may be tiny, but it has vast clear waters, a sandbar that shows up during low tide, giant clams, wild sea turtles, a coral reef, and a stilt over-water walkway. You may be focused on visiting the underground river or El Nido while you’re in Palawan, but making some time for Onuk Island will be all worth it.

24. Mansalangan Sandbar

Thanks to the immaculate condition of Palawan’s rainforests, countless species of wildlife animals, plants, trees, and even insects are still thriving in the province. One prime example is the fireflies at Iwahig which is another tourist attraction in Palawan.

Iwahig Firefly Watching is a unique and aesthetically pleasing experience for everyone. It’s also an amazing photo opportunity because you can no longer see something like this in the metro or even in other provinces. Oh, and aside from the blissful display of fireflies, I’m sure that you’ll also have a good time having a gastronomic dinner while cruising along the Iwahig River.

15. Manguao Lake | Taytay

Ah, last but definitely not the least is the beautiful and peaceful Lake Manguao. This hidden gem located in Taytay, Palawan is one of the underrated tourist spots in Palawan where you can simply sit back, relax, and inhale all the fresh air you can breathe.

The lake also harbors several endemic species of fishes, trees, and many more. Thanks to its secluded location, Lake Manguao became a premier camping and glamping location for locals as well as foreign tourists.
