MILONGA TOURS

TANGO DANCE & MUSIC TOURS OF BUENOS AIRES

Explore the richness & diversity of today's tango.

We believe that the magic of tango - and the key to its longevity - lies in the diversity of its expressions.

Tango is danced in many different ways and in a remarkable variety of spaces in Buenos Aires, the city of its birth.  The music to which we dance tango is also growing increasingly rich, with new recordings, arrangements and compositions becoming more and more common, even as we also keep dancing to all of our beloved tracks from the Golden Age.

Our tour is unique because it shows you the full range of expressions that make up tango today.

Our group will attend milongas ranging from the most elegant and historic to the newest and most experimental.  We'll hear DJed and live music ranging from pure Golden Age to brand-new compositions, arrangements and recordings.  And we'll experience everything from typical 10-person tango orchestras with singers, to guitar & bandoneon duos, playing barefoot in the grass.

This tour gives you the chance not only to enjoy and celebrate tango's richness, but to support the cutting edge in tango today.

The competition, in both categories, can be developed in 3 (three) stages, according to the schedule established by THE ORGANIZATION: a) Qualifying Round, b) Semifinal, c) Final. a) Qualifying Round: All registered couples will participate. They will dance one time or twice (on the same or on a different day) according to the schedule. First Qualifying round on Thursday April 9 and Second Qualifying round on Friday April 10, 2020. b) Semifinal: Couples that have been selected in the Qualifying Round will participate on Saturday April 11, 2020. c) Final: Couples that have been selected in the Semifinal will participate on Sunday April 12, 2020.

In the Tango de Pista category, couples will compete in group performances, dancing to three recorded songs, selected by selected by THE ORGANIZATION

In the Stage Tango category, each couple will compete individually, dancing to one song of their choice. The music piece shall not exceed four (4) minutes and must be handed in to THE ORGANIZATION in digital format (mp3 file, storaged on a Flash Memory Drive) during the check-in instance. In that same instance, participants must state the name and surname of the author or authors of the choreography they will present (as it will be requested in the form to be completed). Couples may present different choreographies in the different stages of the contest.

2. At the time of the competition, at least ten couples must attend the qualifying rounds for the competition to be considered official (regardless of the number of couples previously registered). Otherwise, the championship will cease to be official and the winning couple will not be classified to compete in the semifinal instances of TANGO BUENOS AIRES FESTIVAL AND DANCE WORLD CUP 2020 (see PRIZES).

3. The Organization will be entitled to eliminate from the competition those participants that: a) Do not comply with the rules. b) Commit any moral offense or improper act that tarnishes the image of the Championship or may cause displeasure in the public.

4. In order to ensure the impartiality and professional integrity of the jury members, contestants will not be able to participate in seminars, workshops and/or classes taught by any member of the jury, as long as they are in the competition. (This means that in the case a competing couple is eliminated, they are allowed to register to classes and take privates lessons as they will no longer be competing).

4. THE ORGANIZATION will be entitled to eliminate from the competition those participants that: a) Do not comply with the rules; b) Carry out, in the context of or on the occasion of the Competition, inside and outside its facilities, any action of physical and/or verbal aggression against any person, whether participant, member of the jury or the staff, or general public. In the presence of any of these assumptions, THE ORGANIZATION and BA FESTIVALS will implement the disqualification or elimination of competition, for either or both competitors, through documentation proving the reasons for the measure.

5. In order to ensure the impartiality and professional integrity of the jury members, contestants will not be able to participate in seminars, workshops and/or classes taught by any member of the jury, as long as they are in the competition

JURY 1. In both categories, the jury will be composed of a minimum of 4 (four) members, who— understanding and accepting the rules of the competition, and committing to their compliance—will determine the score of the participating couples. The juries will be appointed in accordance with BA FESTIVALS and THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary.

2. All the decisions of the jury will not be subject to appeal. By enrolling, participants accept this condition. In case of distrust or disagreement, participants may submit a written statement (in Spanish or English) to THE ORGANIZATION and NOT directly to the panel of evaluating judges. Any jury member who may have had a work relationship or been the teacher of any of the participants of the Preliminary for a period of at least 6 months close to the beginning of the competition, may refrain from scoring such participant. For this purpose, both the voluntary statements of the Jury and the information provided by participants when enrolling will be taken into account. In these cases, to get the couple’s final score, the judges’ scores will be added, and this amount will be divided by the number of jury members who actually voted. The final score for each performance will result from the accumulation of points, given by each member of the jury on a scale of 1 to 10 (with decimals), in accordance with the criteria described in the EVALUATION CRITERIA per category (mandatory document, please read below).

3. The jury will choose a winning couple in each category. Also, the jury (with the agreement of THE ORGANIZATION) may grant awards and special mentions to the second and third place, and will be entitled to award other mentions if deemed appropriate.

4. In exceptional cases (power interruption, incidents on stage, etc.), the jury and the supervisor may determine that contestants should dance to additional songs to arrive at a fair verdict. Participants may not refuse to perform.

5. In case of a tie, the couples with the same final score will have to break the draw, either by dancing two additional songs in the Tango de Pista category, or by performing a new choreography in the stage tango category, until a winning couple emerges from the votes of the jury.

SUPERVISOR Appointed by BA FESTIVALS, the Supervisor will bear the responsibility of ensuring the compliance of the present Rules and properly solve any inconvenience not considered in these Rules and establish or inform about the clarifying or interpretative rules that he considers necessary.

FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHING THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary reserves the right to record all the stages of THE COMPETITION, by any means known or to be known—including but not limited to filming, recording, photographing, digitalization, etc.—by itself or third parties, in order to promote and advertise the event. The recorded material obtained will be exclusive property of THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary, who will have to turn a copy of it, as established by the Collaboration Agreement, to BA FESTIVALS. By entering the Championship, participants explicitly and irrevocably authorize the use of the recorded material, without this suggesting—or implying—any compensation for any reason whatsoever by THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary and/or BA FESTIVALS, in favor of any person or organization that claims entitlement to any right that may be invoked. This clause also includes, without limitations, all photographic material published and/or made available for promotion, advertisement, etc.

A couple’s registration and subsequent check‐in implies knowledge and acceptance of these Rules by each one of the participants.

*Clarification about dance level:  Participation in both “Tango de Pista” and Stage Tango Categories competitions are open to everyone. Professional dancers and amateur dances of intermediate level and above compete in the same category according to the rules established by Tango Buenos Aires Dance World Cup. Adherence to these rules qualifies our competition to be recognized as valid by the main Buenos Aires event.

The distinction between a “professional” and “amateur” dance has less to do with the level of skill and more with a professional status of the dancers. “Professional” means that dancers make a living from teaching and dancing/performing tango, and “amateur” means that they do not, but it does not always imply that the level of the professional couple dance is superior to the level of the amateur couple.

There are dancers for whom tango is their main source of income. They are likely to be good instructors, but their level of dance and performance can vary: the professional couple can be excellent at dance or not so great. On the other hand, there are good amateur couples who do not teach tango and get no income from performances, but have achieved an exceptional level of dance. There is also the case of stage dancers who only dance choreographed pieces, but are helpless when it comes to social dancing: they cannot dance in milongas. Finally, there are very skilled social dancers (people who only dance in milongas), but who neither teach nor perform tango. They might be excellent salon dancers. To accommodate different ways in which dancers excel at tango, the two divisions for the competition were established: “Tango de Pista” (salon tango; social category for both amateurs and professional) and Stage Tango (performance category for amateur advanced level and professional level dancers).

Stage Tango Group Competition or Showcase Category

  • If less than 3 registered groups , this category will become a Stage Tango Group Showcase with evaluation by the Official Jury. The groups will perform one tango song on Friday April 10, 2020.
  • With 3 to 6 registered groups, the Stage Tango Group Competition Category   will happen and will consist of one round on Friday April 10, 2020. Each group will dance one tango song.
  • If 7 or more groups registered , the Stage Tango Group Competition Category will consist of two stages: The Qualifying Round : All registered groups must participate. Groups will dance a unique qualifying round on Friday April 10. The groups selected in the qualifying round will dance again on Saturday April 11 and the winning group will be announced after the competition finished.
  • Groups must be trained by a tango teacher/instructor/choreographer who will create the routine and will prepare his/her group for this competition/showcase. Groups must represent the city where the tango school/studio is located.
  • It is the responsibility of the teacher/choreographer to pick up the Medals and team Trophies.
  • Member’s age in the group should be homogeneous (meaning 80 % of member’s age range should be within 15 years maximum difference between the youngest and the oldest).
  • The teacher/choreographer or responsible person for the group must confirm the group registration at the time of accreditation. The presentation of an identity document is necessary. All data provided at the time of the accreditation will be considered as a sworn statement.
  • The Choreographer is required to make the members of the group know about the rules and evaluation criteria of the tournament.

Rules for the Vals Category (amateurs and professional dancers)

  • Dancers of any nationality are eligible to participate in this category.
  • All participants must confirm their registration at the time of accreditation. In order to check in, contestants must attend on the date and time specified by the ATUSA Organization with a valid identity document. Accreditation can be done by one of the members of the couple bringing both documents.
  • Couples will receive the order number and be informed of the approximate dates and times on which they will perform. Those who do not check in will not be able to participate in the championship.
  • The organization will provide a complete panel of official judges of at least 4 members.
  • The Organization will be entitled to eliminate from the competition those participants that: a) Do not comply with the rules. b) Commit any moral offense or improper act that tarnishes the image of the Championship or may cause displeasure in the public.
  • The Vals category of the competition in 2020 will consist of two stages:

A.  The Qualifying Round : All registered couples must participate. Couples will dance one qualifying round on Sunday April 12, 2020.

B. The  Semifinals and Finals :

  • If there are 11 or less registered couples , there will be no elimination and the Champions, 2nd and 3rd places will be announced directly at the Prizes Ceremony on Sunday evening.
  • If there are 12 to 22 registered couples , the couples selected at the qualifying round will pass directly to the Finals (which means there will only be an elimination round) the same day. The Champions, 2nd and 3rd places will be announced at the Prizes Ceremony on Sunday evening.

Specific Rules for the Salon Tango Senior Category

Couples  will compete in groups, dancing three tango songs previously selected by the Committee.

This category will consist of two stages divided in two days as long as there are at least 12 registered couples.* (For the case of less than 12 registered couples, the competition will consist of one stage happening on Thursday July 7, 2022):

 – The Qualifying Round : All registered couples must participate. Couples will dance one qualifying round on Thursday July 7, 2022. *If there are 11 or less registered couples, there will be no elimination, and the Champions, 2nd and 3rd places will be announced on Friday evening.

– The Finals: If there are 12 to 20 couples registered, the couples selected at the qualifying round will dance a final round on Friday and the Champions, 2nd and 3rd places will be announced that same evening.

  • The  Salon Tango Senior is an unofficial category open to amateur dancers who, by the date of the competition, are 60 years old or older.  However, a  Salon Tango Senior competitor (who is 60 or older) may compete with a partner who is younger than 60 years old   if the age difference between the competitor and their partner is not more than 8 years at the date of the competition. (If both members of the couple are over 60 years old, the age difference will not be an impediment).
  • Professional tango dancers cannot compete in this category. No exceptions .
  • Couples will receive the order number and be informed of the approximate dates and times on which they will perform.
  • Those who do not check in will not be able to participate in the championship.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • The embrace cannot be broken; partners must constantly hold each other by means of the embrace. It is understood that, in certain figures, this may be flexible; but not throughout the entire piece of music. All movements shall be performed within the space allowed by the couple’s embrace.
  • Participants may perform any figure commonly used, including “barridas (sweeps), “sacadas al piso” (“sacadas” close to the floor), “lápices”, “boleos”, “enrosques” (twists) etc.
  • Ganchos (hooks), saltos (jumps) and any other possibility typical of stage tango  are completely excluded.
  • None of the members of the couple may lift his/her legs  beyond the line of the knees.  Foot embellishments on the floor are allowed.
  • Couples must constantly move counterclockwise and avoid remaining in the same place for too long.
  • The Judges will give special relevance to the  couple’s musicality, elegance, music interpretation and walking style.
  • Elegant social dance tango wear for woman and traditional suits for men are advised.
  • All participants must confirm their registration at the time of accreditation. The presentation of an identity document is mandatory to obtain accreditation. It will not be necessary that the two members of the couple submit for accreditation; it can be done by one of the members bringing both documents. Accreditation by third parties shall not be made.
  • The Milonga category of the competition will consist of three stages divided in two days:
  • A. The Qualifying Round : All registered couples must participate. Couples will dance one qualifying round on Saturday April 11, 2020.
  • If there are 11 or less registered couples at the competition, there will be no elimination on Saturday and the Champions, 2nd and 3rd places will be announced on Sunday April 12 at the Prizes Ceremony.
  • If there are 12 to 22 registered couples at the competition , the couples selected at the qualifying round on Saturday will pass directly to the Finals on Sunday (there will be no semifinal round).
  • If there are 23 or more couples registered at the competition, the couples selected at the qualifying round on Saturday will pass to the Semifinals on Sunday. The Final round will also be on Sunday April 12.
  • The “So you think you can tango?” category is open to social (amateur) dancers only.
  • Competitors who compete in the Official Categories as well as professional tango dancers cannot compete in this category .
  • Dancers of any nationality are eligible to participate in this category. There are no residence restrictions .
  • There will be one unique round with no elimination (no semi-final or final rounds) on Saturday July 9, 2022.
  • Men and women must register individually .  Registration is on a first come, first served basis with a limit of 20 men as leaders and 20 women as followers. If at the end of the registration process there are uneven numbers of leaders and followers, the extra participants registered in any of the two roles will not be able to take part in the competition and therefore their fees will be refunded.
  • If there are more than 10 leaders and 10 followers registered, the total amount of dancers participating will be divided in two groups of equal numbers of leaders and followers for an optimum evaluation process.
  • Dancing couples will be the result of a random matching of leaders and followers that will take place straight at the dance floor. They will compete in groups and dance a round of three to four songs previously selected by the Committee.
  •  Dancers will change partners through a draw system for each of the three songs.

DANCE RULES

  • Dancers cannot break the embrace. It is understood that, in certain figures, the embrace can be flexible (open and close according to the figure); but not throughout the entire piece of music.
  • Couples may perform any commonly used figures of “social” tango , including “barridas” (sweeps), “sacadas al piso” (drawn to the floor),“enrosques” (twists), “ganchos” (hooks), boleos, etc, as well as embellishments always within their own space, without standing in the way of couples dancing around them.
  • “Saltos” (jumps), “trepadas” (climbs) and any other possibilities typically used in stage tango where both feet lose contact with the floor are completely excluded.
  • Dancers may not lift his/her legs beyond the line of the knees. Embellishments are allowed within this limit.
  • It is not allowed to overtake.
  • Costumes will not be considered as a specific evaluation point in this category.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • All dancers will be evaluated individually by the Jury Panel who will determine a unique winner for each role.
  • Posture, elegance, technique, connection to the partner and walking style will be the main points of evaluation for all dancers.
  • For the leader’s role, the Judges will give special relevance to musicality, improvisation and navigation (take into account that leaders should avoid more than two musical phrases on the same spot, making it difficult for the round to circulate; they should constantly move counterclockwise without going backwards although it is allowed to perform one or two back steps if the movement requires it).
  • For the follower’s role, the Judges will give special relevance to the skill of following (anticipation or back leading will be penalized), and the footwork technique.

Wow - wonderful evening at this Tango Show!! We booked just 1 day in advance and opted for pickup services, the show & dinner. We were promptly seated and given menus for our 3 course meal. Food was excellent!!! We had a salad, tender steak and a delicious dessert - went with our waiters recommendations. Meal also included a bottle of wine for 2. Show was very entertaining!!

We enjoyed a very relaxing evening at the Tango show. The food was good, the wait staff was great and the entertainment was very talented and exceeded our expectations. The entertainment provided a varied music and dance from around Argentina and was not limited solely to Tango music and dance although those dancers and musicians were amazing. Overall it was a great evening.

This Tango Show was a very authentic, intimate, emotional show. It was thoroughly enjoyable and we can highly recommend it. Dinner was excellent too.

Lana Del Rey Reveals Former Tour Manager Quit “For No Reason” Before Coachella 2024

tours tango facebook

By Sara Delgado

Lana Del Rey attends the 66th GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena on February 04 2024 in Los Angeles California.

Weekend one of Coachella 2024 might have been less than a week ago, but headliner Lana Del Rey is taking the time to walk down memory lane. On April 16, the star posted a series of snippets from her performance and penned a long and heartfelt letter to her team — during which she also put her former, long-time tour manager on blast for quitting right before the festival.

Four days after her performance, Lana Del Rey took to Instagram to share a carousel of pictures from her first Coachella 2024 set. Del Rey started her post sharing pictures of herself with Billie Eilish , Jon Batiste, and Jack Antonoff — the three guests she brought out during weekend one of the festival — and went on to include more snaps with her team from the night and prep.

“Thank you guys. For f*cking everything,” Del Rey captioned the post, sharing insight from the prep, even sharing she “caught laryngitis that literally left just a few hours before [she] hit the stage.” Del Rey went on to give her team members individual shoutouts, before calling out her former tour manager for quitting.

“[Thank you,] Emily, for stepping up as tour manager when Pete quit for no reason after 15 years because he was b*tt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free from Wally and randomly decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager,” the star’s captions read.

Del Rey continued saying she “never got a phone call” from Pete and “probably never will.” She graciously added that she is “still grateful for the 15 years” before packing in another jab: “No worries – 37 days was more than enough time to put together an entire headlining set all by ourselves. Not stressful at all. Way to go, Emily, you f*cking killed it with grace.”

Del Rey signed off the post, writing: “Please send me an email if you decide to quit this year - 15 years is a long time for us, too,” with a smiling emoji. (In case you need a refresher, this Pete is the  same tour manager  Del Rey famously threw plates at in 2015 after  a performance in Dallas was canceled .)

Inside AD ’s May 2024 Issue: A Global Tour of the Best in Design

Armchair travelers, rejoice: AD took a jaunt around the world for our May International issue, and the pictures are worth a thousand words. If you, too, are working on “everywhere,” consider this a little shortcut. The richly individual residences and projects shown this month are so powerfully evocative that you might feel you have journeyed to Ibiza, Costa Rica, Lagos, the French countryside, Mexico, and even Los Angeles just by turning the pages. Add the passionate language each homeowner uses to describe the singular lure of their chosen locale, and the picture is complete.

When a New York City family decamped to Costa Rica , in 2020, they hired recently launched LA design studio Years and local architecture firm Garnier Arquitectos to craft a dream house that could withstand the seven-month rainy season. “We wanted to learn how to live in harmony with nature , so we decided that we were going to be okay with the ants and the power outages and all the rest,” says owner Reshma Patel, adding, “You can try to keep it at bay, but the jungle always finds a way in.”

As for our cover star, actor Emma Roberts, she calls her LA nest “my very own grown-up dollhouse,” and adds that when she and her young son moved in, “I just remember feeling like we are exactly where we need to be.” Sometimes everywhere is just one perfect somewhere .

Nicki minaj's husband begs court to let him go on tour with her outside u.s., nicki minaj's hubby begs court for green light i wanna go on tour too.

4/17 -- 8:28 AM PT -- Kenneth Petty 's request to travel internationally with Nicki Minaj was granted ... a judge signed off on the dates.

Nicki Minaj's husband, Kenneth Petty, is asking a court for permission to travel out of the country so he can join her on tour in Europe ... and he says he'll be needed overseas.

According to court docs, obtained by TMZ, KP says he isn't just looking to globe-trot with Nicki for fun -- on the contrary, he says it's necessary to join her on the European leg of her "Pink Friday 2" world tour for a bunch of reasons, mainly to provide childcare for their son.

The start date he lists for the anticipated travel schedule is April 17, 2024 ... and he says there will be stops in Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, and Romania.

Petty says he plans to be back in the U.S. by July 14, 2024, right after the tour wraps up -- and is hoping for a green light to join his wife ASAP.

According to the docs, his probation officer hasn't raised any objections to his travel request. However, if Kenneth's request gets approved, he'll likely need to provide the officer with a detailed travel itinerary and also check in once he's back.

As previously reported, Kenneth is currently serving 3 years probation for failing to register as a sex offender in California. That's the reason he even has to jump through these hoops.

A judge has yet to sign off -- and the court denies his request, Kenneth's gotta stay put.

Tour of Britain Women Salvaged from Shutdown, Returns as Four-Stage Race for 2024

Women's worldtour stage-race reboots as four-day event starting from wales on june 6, with plans to expand to six days in future..

Officials confirmed details of the rebooted and rebranded Tour of Britain Women after a wild 10-week scramble to keep the race on the 2024 calendar.

Event organizer British Cycling revealed Monday a four-stage route from Wales and into Manchester for the inaugural edition of the race after its predecessor six-day “Women’s Tour” was effectively shuttered due to sponsorship shortfalls.

“It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women,” said newly appointed race director and former Team Sky/Ineos mastermind Rod Ellingworth.

“The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I’m sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout,” Ellingworth said.

The news comes as a boon for the ailing British grassroots racing scene and gives hope for the future of the formerly named Women’s Tour.

The previous event was one of the OG stage-races of the Women’s WorldTour and counts Marianne Vos, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Demi Vollering on its roll of honor.

The first Tour of Britain Women rolls out from Welshpool in mid-Wales on June 6. Full stage details are due to be revealed in coming weeks.

“There’s clearly so much support and fondness for the race, both at home and further afield,” said Lidl-Trek racer Lizzie Deignan, who won the GC of the Women’s Tour in both 2016 and 2019.

“The four stage hosts deserve credit for their commitment to women’s racing and for helping to make the race happen, and I’m sure that together we can put on a brilliant show in June,” Deignan said.

It’s all-change this coming season for the Women’s WorldTour race and its partner 2.Pro-ranked Tour of Britain Men.

Both races faced shutdown at the turn of the year when former promoter Sweetspot entered liquidation  and new commercial partners could not be found.

National governing body British Cycling stepped in as organizer of both races at the final hour and established “British Cycling Events”.

Former Team Sky / Ineos Grenadiers staffer Ellingworth was appointed as race director soon afterward, and officials scrambled to design courses for both its men’s and women’s races.

Both events were shortened for 2024 due to both logistical and financial reasons.

The Tour of Britain Men  will take place across six days this September.

The formerly named “Tour of Britain” typically serves as a key tune-up for many riders heading to road worlds, with Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, and Julian Alaphilippe among recent GC winners on British roads.

British Cycling intends to bring both the Women’s and men’s tours to six days in the future as it continues to seek sponsorship partners.

Pennsylvania primary updates: Biden continues his multi-stop visit; Bucks is Pa.'s purplest county

In his Pittsburgh stop, the president pledged to keep U.S. Steel an American company.

Pennsylvania's primary election is Tuesday. While both parties' nominees are set in the marquee presidential and Senate races, voters will also weigh in on a competitive race for attorney general, other row offices, U.S. House, and the state House and Senate.

Pennsylvania is expected to be a key presidential battleground state in the November general election. Donald Trump held a fundraiser and a rally in the state over the weekend, and Joe Biden has several Pennsylvania stops planned this week.

Biden's planned visits include a Tuesday stop in Scranton and one Thursday in the Philadelphia area.

‘They’re cheating.’ President Biden floats higher tariffs on Chinese imports in Pittsburgh speech

President Joe Biden announced that he is willing to crack down on Chinese imports in a speech at the United Steelworkers Union headquarters in Pittsburgh.

Surrounded by people holding United Steelworkers and “Standing with Workers” signs, Scranton-born Biden touted his Pennsylvania connections, saying his love for Pittsburgh goes back to his childhood when his grandfather would often speak about the city. He said he visited Pittsburgh when he ran for U.S. Senate in Delaware at age 29, and the steelworkers union endorsed him.

In Pittsburgh, Biden promises to keep US Steel a ‘totally American company’

President Joe Biden is promising to block the acquisition of U.S. Steel by a Japanese company, saying it “should remain a totally American company. American-owned, American operated.”

In a speech at the Pittsburgh headquarters of the United Steelworkers, Biden pledged on Wednesday to keep the company in U.S. hands.

Winner of crowded pa. democratic primary will challenge trump-aligned incumbent scott perry.

Democrats ’ mission to oust U.S. Rep. Scott Perry could fall on the shoulders of a former newscaster or a "Top Gun" veteran.

Perry, a Republican who represents Dauphin County and parts of York and Cumberland Counties, is deeply aligned with former President Donald Trump . The former chair of the far-right House Freedom Caucus urged lawmakers to throw out Pennsylvania’s electoral votes hours after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, and later tried to block the feds from accessing his phone after it was seized by the FBI .

How long did Biden live in Scranton?

Though he grew up in Delaware, President Joe Biden was born in and spent his first few years in Scranton.

At one point, his family lived with his maternal grandparents, who were also based in Scranton. The family stayed in the city until Biden was 10.

Biden mocks Trump over Truth Social stock drop

During a campaign stop in Scranton on Tuesday to discuss his tax plan, President Joe Biden took the opportunity to mock the performance of Donald Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.

Shares of Truth Social have dropped more than 66% since the company went public on March 23, erasing more than $5 billion in market capitalization.

In Pittsburgh, Biden to announce plan for steel tariff increase

In his visit to Pittsburgh Wednesday, President Joe Biden will announce he is asking the U.S. trade representative to triple existing tariffs on Chinese steel.

The announcement will come during Biden’s visit to the United Steelworkers Union headquarters. His administration framed the announcement as a continuation of Biden’s support for American manufacturing.

Deep purple: Bucks is Pa.’s most politically divided county

Pennsylvania’s reputation as a poiltical battleground state remains intact, based on the State Department’s final registration figures for the April 23 primary election, and Bucks County is right on the front line.

Bucks is the most-purple state in the commonwealth, with a mere 0.43% margin separating Democrats and Republicans. Democrats hold a 1,710-vote advantage in a county that has nearly 475,000 registrants.

Biden visits his childhood Scranton home and plays up working-class roots in first day of Pa. tour

President Joe Biden described his childhood hometown of Scranton as a place that “climbs into your heart and never leaves,” as he launched a three-day long tour of Pennsylvania meant to appeal to working-class voters.

Biden has often returned to Scranton when he needs a boost or a political reset. Beneath a banner that read “Tax Fairness for All Americans,” Biden aimed to contrast his working-class roots in the city with former President Donald Trump ’s more privileged background.

Pennsylvania primary election voters guide

Primary elections are held to determine who will represent each political party in the general election. Pennsylvania holds closed primaries, meaning that only members of a political party can vote in its primary.

Pennsylvanians will select their parties’ nominees for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state House and Senate, state attorney general, and other state row offices. These primaries will set up November matchups, which could tip the balance of power in both Harrisburg and Washington.

How Taylor Swift inspired a new generation of singer-songwriters, in their own words

  • We're living in the era of musicians raised by Taylor Swift.
  • Gayle, Maisie Peters, Baby Queen, and Gus Dapperton told BI about her impact on their songwriting.
  • Stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Troye Sivan also count Swift as an influence.

Sabrina Carpenter said working with Swift is "a childhood dream come true."

tours tango facebook

Back when Sabrina Carpenter was 9 years old, still years away from becoming a Disney Channel star, she uploaded a video of herself singing Swift's country hit " Picture to Burn " on YouTube.

Now, at 24 years old, Carpenter said she thinks of Swift as an "older sister" after opening for her monumental Eras Tour, playing international shows from Mexico City to Melbourne.

"That is one of my main inspirations ever since I was a little girl," Carpenter also told Billboard of Swift. "Watching her in and of itself is how you learn. I admire her work ethic and her talent and she's just so amazing."

Gayle was greatly influenced by "Picture to Burn" and "I Knew You Were Trouble."

tours tango facebook

Gayle, 19, shot to fame with her viral hit "Abcdefu" and earned a Grammy nomination for song of the year .

During a 2023 interview with Business Insider, she reminisced about growing up with Swift's "iconic" songs, specifically citing "Picture to Burn," which was released when Gayle was just 2 years old.

"Some of her music videos when I was younger, she looked like a fairy princess to me," Gayle said. "Oh my gosh, she is, wow. Just fangirling here."

The singer-songwriter also said Swift's hit single "I Knew You Were Trouble" is associated with one "very big core memory"  after watching the music video "every day" at summer camp.

Taking notes from Swift's hit songs eventually led to a cosign from Swift herself; Gayle joined The Eras Tour last year as a supporting act , opening several shows ahead of Paramore and Haim.

Gracie Abrams described Swift as "one of the blueprints for vulnerability as a young woman."

tours tango facebook

Abrams, a longtime admirer of Swift, recently began working with the superstar's "Folklore" and "Evermore" collaborator Aaron Dessner. She has repeatedly covered Swift's songs , including "You're On Your Own, Kid" from "Midnights" and the revered 10-minute version of "All Too Well."

"I just respect the shit out of her with everything that she does," the 23-year-old singer-songwriter told Teen Vogue . "I've always been so inspired at every stage of my life as a fan of hers."

In fact, the respect is mutual. Abrams appeared as the opening act for dozens of stops on The Eras Tour, and in 2021, Swift publicly praised Abrams' haunting single "Rockland."

"I definitely don't believe that happened. I had a crazy physical reaction," Abrams said of the praise. "I don't know how to operate, or function ever again. But I'm her biggest fan. Everything that she does is fucking unbelievably inspiring, motivating, it makes me want to do better and be the best version of myself as a writer and a person."

Abrams will return to The Eras Tour stage when Swift returns for the second North American leg this year, playing a string of shows in New Orleans, Toronto, and more.

Phoebe Bridgers praised Swift as "an incredible businessperson and an incredible writer."

tours tango facebook

Bridgers, who was also tapped to open for Swift on The Eras Tour, said it was a "dream" to collaborate on "Nothing New," one of the vault tracks released on " Red (Taylor's Version) ."

"I just am so excited to have people take it at face value the day that it comes out, because I got teary recording it. I just couldn't be more excited," she told Billboard last October.

"She is an incredible businessperson and an incredible writer," Bridgers continued. "What she's been able to build just from writing adeptly from a young age is insane."

Upon the song's release, the 28-year-old Grammy nominee took to Twitter to express her gratitude and disbelief.

"I was 18 when red came out," she wrote . "How is this real."

Maisie Peters has described herself as "the biggest Swiftie ever."

tours tango facebook

Maisie Peters, 23, told BI that Swift is "formative to everything I make."

"I remember listening to 'Back to December' for the first time and just being like, 'This is incredible,'" Peters said.

Asked if it gets tiresome to field questions about being a Swiftie, Peters responded with a definitive, "No."

"With somebody like Taylor, there's so much you can draw on," she continued. "She's so inspiring in so many different aspects of what she's done. So I'm here to talk about Taylor Swift all day."

Although said she Peters hadn't met her idol just yet, she did sign to Gingerbread Man Records , the label run by noted Swift pal Ed Sheeran. He also cowrote three songs on her debut album, "You Signed Up for This."

"I've never met Taylor Swift and everyone always goes, 'Oh aren't you so excited?' And I am so excited, but also it's going to be crazy because she's been so important to my life that it's sort of like meeting an otherworldly being," Peters said.

Baby Queen was inspired to pursue a career in music after seeing the "Love Story" music video.

tours tango facebook

"I just decided from the age of 12 after discovering Taylor Swift," Baby Queen told BI. "I was like, 'This is what I'm doing.'"

The pop-rocker, 26, whose birth name is Bella Latham, also revealed that her brutally honest single " These Drugs " was partially inspired by Swift — namely the gut-punch bridge, a craft that Swift is famous for mastering.

"It's like where you put all the emotions, what Taylor does. She puts all the emotions into the bridge," she said. "You hear the story and then the bridge comes and it's like, 'OK, I know Taylor's going to shoot me through the heart and she's going to kill me.'"

Read our full interview with Baby Queen here .

Gus Dapperton has also cited "Love Story" as a major influence.

tours tango facebook

Gus Dapperton, 27, told BI that his music is heavily inspired by artists like Odd Future and King Krule — fellow skater kids who had "weird voices" and no inhibitions — as well as supermassive stars like Britney Spears and Swift.

"When I hear my sister sing those big pop songs, it's impossible to deny how beautiful they sound," he said. "My family would all be in the car chanting Taylor Swift songs and stuff. I think 'Love Story' by Taylor Swift is one of my favorite songs of all time. My dad would just turn up the volume as loud as possible."

"That's why I never denied the pleasures of pop music growing up," he added.

Read our full interview with Gus Dapperton here .

Troye Sivan has long been inspired by Swift's songwriting prowess.

tours tango facebook

Troye Sivan, 27, has been naming Swift as his ideal cowriter since 2016.

"I really, really, really want to write with Taylor Swift," he told Billboard . "I'm sure that everyone would say that, but for me… as a student of pop music, I feel like I have so much that I could learn from her."

Two years later, when asked about his "dream duet partner," Sivan said Swift again, joking that he "may as well reach for the stars."

"We [already] performed live," he told Variety , referring to his cameo appearance on her "Reputation" tour in 2018 . "I admire her so much as a writer. So even if we didn't duet and we just wrote together, I would be totally into that idea — so I could watch her work. She's a master of pop."

More recently, Sivan listed "This Is Me Trying," "You Are In Love," and "Clean" as his top three favorite songs by Swift.

"When she hits that stride, I get so jealous, and I just want to listen to the song over and over and over again," he told Jared Frieder for Interview magazine . "I'm always like, 'Damn, Taylor Swift is so good.'"

Clairo said she "cried uncontrollably" when she met Swift.

tours tango facebook

Clairo, 25, managed to team up with Swift's longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff to create her 2021 album "Sling." However, the year prior, she was "shocked" when Swift initiated contact with her at the 2020 NME Awards.

"I crouched down with her, so we were both on the floor talking to each other," the celebrated indie songwriter later told NME . "It looked so ridiculous. No one could talk to me after that happened, I was crying so much."

Indeed, the year before their meeting, Clairo had made a bold declaration on Twitter : "I would let taylor swift punch me any day."

According to Conan Gray, Swift "raised an entire generation of songwriters."

tours tango facebook

Back in 2020, Swift shared Conan Gray's debut album "Kid Krow" on her Instagram story, praising the track "Wish You Were Sober" as a "masterpiece."

The duo's mutual respect is so well-documented that Swift enlisted Gray, 25, to help promote the release of her first rerecorded album, "Fearless (Taylor's Version)," in 2021.

"I've never met her, but she's been kind to me," Gray later told GQ . "Taylor raised an entire generation of songwriters. She taught a lot of people how to write pop songs."

The " Superache " singer also revealed that "Teardrops on My Guitar" was the first song he heard by Swift that changed his outlook on songwriting.

"It was one of the first YouTube videos I ever watched too. I remember that day so vividly," Gray said. "My family had one computer that we all would use and I remember we all huddled around it and watched together. I remember thinking, 'Wow, Taylor Swift is the coolest person on the earth.'"

Olivia Rodrigo hailed Swift as her "all-time idol" and "the best storyteller of our generation."

These days, Olivia Rodrigo, 21, is taking more cues from rockers like No Doubt , The Breeders, and The White Stripes .

But during her breakneck rise to fame, Rodrigo gushed about Swift on countless occasions and even sampled Swift's music on her acclaimed debut album "Sour."

Rodrigo even received a "really sweet" handwritten letter from her idol  after the success of her single "Drivers License."

"I don't want to divulge too much because it's really sweet and personal," Rodrigo told Billboard .

"But she talks a lot about how, I think, you make your own luck in the world. And when you do kind things to others, good things come your way," she added.

Indeed, Rodrigo has already taken some of Swift's career advice: She previously told The Guardian that  she has retained control of her master recordings  because she was inspired by Swift's public battle to own her music.

Griff said there's "a new wave of young pop musicians" that evoke Swift in their songwriting.

"She's probably one of the No. 1 people that I look up to in terms of being a songwriter and being a top female in the music industry and being so consistent and coming back, time after time after time, with incredible songs," Griff, 23, told Nylon . "I even said that to her."

Griff met her hero at the 2021 Brit Awards , where she received the annual rising star award and performed her single "Black Hole."

"Taylor sent flowers, which was really nice. And we got to hang out after the show in her dressing room, so that was pretty crazy," she told Billboard .

Griff also told Harpers Bazaar that Swift gave her advice about handling the "pressures of industry and business and writing my next album — just [to] take my time and do it on my own terms."

Swift even gave Griff a shout-out when she accepted the global icon award that evening. More recently, Swift shared Griff's song "Vertigo" on Instagram, writing, "I love this one."
