Frequent questions about Interrail Questions about Interrail
The various Interrail passes can be used by anyone residing in a participating European country (whether it is a member state of the European Union or not), in Russia or in Turkey. However, you will not be able to travel with your Interrail pass in your own country of residence.
The pass is strictly nominative, and the traveler's country of residence must be communicated when purchasing the pass.
There are Interrail passes for travelers of all ages:
- youth (under 28)
- seniors (from 60 years old)
- children (from 4 and under 12): up to 2 children under 12 years old can accompany for free (free Pass for accompanying children). From the 3rd child, you will need to purchase a Youth Pass. Children under 4 travel for free and do not need a Pass at all.
The Interrail Global Pass allows you to travel anywhere in the following countries (except your own country of residence):
Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland), Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, and Turkey.
If you want to travel in only one country, you can also opt for an Interrail One Country Pass for the country of your choice.
When purchasing your Interrail pass, you can choose from the following options:
Global Pass :
- 4, 5 or 7 days of travel to be freely chosen during a period of 1 month
- 10 or 15 days of travel to be freely chosen during a period of 2 months
- 15 or 22 consecutive days of travel
- unlimited travel during 1, 2 or 3 months
One Country Pass :
- 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 days of travel to be freely chosen during a period of 1 month
The price of your Interrail Pass will depend on several factors:
- how many countries you want to visit (a Global Pass for entire Europe or a One Country Pass for the country of your choice?)
- the duration of validity and the number of days of travel
- the passholder's age at the moment of travelling (adult, youth, senior or child)
- the desired comfort class (1 st or 2 nd )
Use the Interrail-configurator to compare prices of the various options.
On most European trains, no reservation is necessary and you just have to show your Interrail Pass to board. However, if you take night trains or certain high-speed trains , you will have to reserve your seat or bed for an additional charge. The amount of this supplement varies from train to train and is not included in the price of your Interrail pass.
Nothing complicated: for each train, the Rail Planner app tells you for whether reservation is required or not.
If reservation is necessary, you can book your seat in the Rail Planner App , on the Interrail website , by phone at the Contact Center of most railway companies or at the counters of Europe's main international rail stations.
For Eurostar , TGV INOUI , TGV Lyria , European Sleeper , Nightjet connections to/from Belgium and EC trains Switzerland-Italy , you can even book your seat or bed at the special passholder fare online on our own website .
Using the Mobile Pass is very easy. All you need is your smartphone, the Rail Planner app and an internet connection (no need to be connected at all times, but we recommend to connect at least once every 3 days).
If you want to travel with the Mobile Pass, just select the "Mobile Pass" option when purchasing your Interrail pass. After your purchase, you'll get a confirmation email that contains your order details and your Pass number. This number will allow you to upload your pass into the Rail Planner app .
How to activate your Mobile Pass
Just follow the instructions in your order confirmation email to upload your Pass into the app and activate it so it's ready for travel. You can do both steps at once, or you can add your Pass to the app first and activate it later on, just before starting your trip. It's up to you!
Travelling with your Mobile Pass
Use the app's journey planner to search for the journeys you want to take. Tap to save them to "My Trips", where you can see an overview of matching schedules. When you're ready to take a train, tap to add that journey to your Pass, and it will appear among your tickets in the "My Pass" section, ready for inspection on board. The app's "My Pass" section therefore serves both as your travel diary and transport ticket.
If you live in Belgium you have three different options to purchase your Interrail Pass:
- through our Contact Center : +32 (0)70 79 79 79 (€0,30/min)
- at our international Travel Centre at Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station
Exception: the 3 days' Global Pass is only available online.
When you buy your Interrail Pass, you can still freely choose your departure date within 11 months of purchase. This actually means that you can buy your Pass from 11 months before the start of the trip. Our tip: Don't hesitate to take advantage of some promotion on the purchase of your Interrail Pass at any time of the year, as you'll still have 11 months left to plan your trip and your vacation at your ease. You'll manage, won't you? On the other hand, if you're more of the "last minute" type, you can buy your Interrail Mobile Pass until the very last minute, since you'll instantaneously get an a-mail with all the details for uploading your Pass in the app (if you prefer a paper pass, please take the delivery times into account).
Yes, you can!
As long as you have not reached the first day of validity of your Interrail Pass, you can exchange it for free for another Interrail Pass (via the Interrail customer service) or get a refund of 85% .
From the first day of validity of your Pass, exchange or refund are no longer possible.
Most European rail companies offer an assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility. To find out more, please consult this page .

How to Book Tickets on B-Europe - Step-by-Step
This step by step guide shows how to use the B-Europe website, to buy tickets and reservations for international train journeys to and from Belgium
B-Europe is the online ticket booking service for international trains from and to Belgium, managed by the national rail operator, SNCB.
It guarantees matching the cheapest price on international train journeys from AND to Belgium by Eurostar, ICE, TGB (TGV trains from and To Belgium) and Thalys trains.
Also worth knowing is that as it sells tickets for journeys between Belgium and Germany by both ICE and Thalys services, the ticket prices and departure times can be directly compared (the main German ticket booking site, DB Bahn, does not sell tickets for the Thalys trains).
B-Europe is one of the simpler train ticket booking services to use, but first time users, can easily overlook some of the site's more useful, but less obvious features.
B-Europe offers versions of its service in French, Dutch, English and German - use the flag highlighted to select a language. All of the pages below are taken from the English language version.
The five things worth paying attention to:
1. The 'Train' tab (above the destinations search boxes) is the default - and this setting needs to be used when looking up standard point-2-point journeys 2. The 'InterRail' tab (next to the 'Train' tab needs be selected if you have an InterRail or Eurail pass and want to book reservations on the Eurostar or Thalys trains - more information on this below. 3. Single' journeys is also the default - so select the 'Return' button if you want to book a return journey. 4. 2nd class is also the default (the blue boxes indicate the chosen option on B-Europe) - if you want to travel 1st class, you don't have to select it on the home page - though the 1st class tickets are also automatically included on the search results, so you can skip this
5. Also note that the 'Advanced Search' button has been highlighted and the reasons why SMTJ has drawn your attention to this feature have been explained below.
6. And there is a fare calendar.
The core benefit of using Advanced Search is the option to only include 'Direct Train's in the search results - though when looking up journeys between Bruxelles and most cities in France, you will have a much wider choice of journey options if you don't restrict the selection to Direct Trains.
But the low fare calendar ONLY functions for Eurostar and Thalys trains, You can click on each date to see which departures are available that day at the lowest possible price.
This is an example of the information you will see when you search for a journey. Note the use of the Thalys and ICE logos to designate the specific train service - and that the Thalys and ICE trains are both listed for this journey.
Also note that the only choice of ticket at this stage, is between 1st and 2nd class tickets (so you don't have to have selected 1st class on the home page) B-Europe has changed this page recently - it used to be also possible to choose the type of ticket (non-flex, mid-flex etc) from here - but this is now available at the next step (once you have clicked on the 1st or 2nd class ticket).
...that you will see once you have clicked on the 1st or 2nd class ticket.
On this example it's worth noting the following;
(1) The price shown on the preceding screen for the Thalys departure is revealed to be the price of a 'Mid-Flex' ticket - and the core terms and conditions of a Mid-Flex ticket are shown.
(2) The empty yellow circles indicates the space where the 'Full-Flex' ticket option would USUALLY be shown - so that it can be selected as an alternative to the 'Mid - Flex' ticket. 'Full-Flex' tickets are more expensive than Mid-Flex tickets, but they can be fully refunded if you subsequently cancel your journey plans. Though as can be seen, no Full-Flex ticket was being offered for this journey - and if it's not shown there is no means of accessing it.
(3) The cheapest 'No-Flex' tickets will ALSO only appear here IF they're available - so in this example they have either sold out, or weren't being offered for this departure.
(The icons highlighted in green)
The somewhat easy to miss information icons (circled in green) give access to additional information for the journey, click them and you will see something which resembles this...
... (or the equivalent per ticket type)
However, there will be another opportunity to access the refund conditions of the ticket pre-booking.
Checking the allocation of seat reservations
You have the option of choosing where to sit and taking this up is recommended. (Reservations and seat options are also presented in the same manner, when booking journeys on B-Europe by Eurostar and TGB (TGV) trains).
...mirrors the ticketing information shown for the journey by the Thalys train, the seat reservation has been included and the ticket price shown includes the reservation
...the seat isn't now reserved and the price has now dropped by €6 = the price charged by B-Europe for reserving a seat on the ICE train. Seats aren't absolutely guaranteed on the ICE trains, but they're also only usually particularly busy on Friday and Sundays and in the evening business hours.
The final pre-checkout stage of the booking process on B-Europe is the selection of a ticket delivery option.
As can be seen the four significant aspects of this page worth paying attention to are:
(1) Clicking the (i) icon is a further (and final) opportunity pre-booking, to check the exchange and refund terms of the tickets you have chosen.
(2) Unlike the majority of other online train ticket services, B-Europe imposes an additional charge for collecting at a station.
(3) The postal charges are also comparatively expensive. If you want to travel on an ICE train between Germany and Belgium and also want to receive your tickets in the post, it's worth comparing the total cost of the booking, including postage, with the total cost when booking with DB If you want receive tickets by post for journeys between Belgium and The Netherlands, there is no point in looking up the journeys on the Dutch ticket site, NS International, as it does not offer the option to receive tickets by mail.
(4) If you book an E-Ticket and go on to register an account with B-Europe, you don't have to print the tickets. You can download the tickets to your mobile device and show your phone to the train conductor.
If you have an InterRail or Eurail pass, you can book the compulsory rail pass reservations online for journeys by Eurostar* or Thalys trains and now TGV trains; both to/from Belgium and journeys by TGV within France. However, your pass needs to be valid in the both the countries you will be travelling to and from. *Reservations for journeys by Eurostar between both Paris or Lille and the UK can also be booked on B-Europe, if your rail pass is valid in both France and the UK.
Also good to know:
Using B-Europe's reservation service had only been an option for users of paper passes as pass numbers are required when making a booking, but mobile passes don't have them; they're printed on to the paper passes. But new online services have been launched which enable mobile pass users to obtain the necessary pass numbers. Eurail mobile pass purchasers can use this pass number generation service ; InterRail pass purchasers can this pass number generation service .
However, B-Europe will only offer 'mobile' tickets as a reservation booking option and it imposes a €4 surcharge for booking a mobile reservation.
Also on B-Europe reservations cannot be booked for the Intercités routes which also have mandatory reservations. And for end-to-end journey options which involve taking two TGV trains, the fee will need to be paid per train.
The optional reservations on the ICE trains between Belgium and Germany also can't be booked on Europe, but they can be booked online on DB, the German railways booking service.
...as will be seen you then need to click on 'Book your Pass fare'..
What's particularly noteworthy on this page is the information that B-Europe DOES NOT ask for. In particular you don't have to enter information re: your rail pass or your nationality - it's solely up to you to ensure the reservation you book will be valid with your rail pass.
However, B-Europe will let you book the rail pass reservation regardless of whether you can use it - though note that they can be exchanged to a different train or date if need be. This particularly matters if you are Belgian, British, Dutch or French. If you are; you can only use your rail pass to travel FROM your country on the first day that is valid for and TO your country on the final day that use your pass.
So, for example, if you are British and return to the UK with a few days left remaining on a monthly or consecutive days pass - you can't then use your pass for a day trip by Eurostar to France or Belgium. Even if you wanted to make those journeys on the final day that your pass is valid for, neither your pass, or reservation, will be valid on the journey from the UK. You can only make that journey on the first day that your pass is valid for.

Running in to some issues with the timetable?
I'm not getting any results, why not?
We're expecting lots of travellers this summer, so many people are currently checking train times in our timetable. It's possible you're not seeing any results because our timetable is handling too many requests. Try again or check back a little later!
Are you getting the 'Prices unavailable' error? Chances are reservations for your preferred train are sold out. Take these extra steps to try and find available seats:
Check the train carrier's website to see if there are still available seats and book your seat reservation directly from the railway carrier or via other platforms. Learn more
If your schedule allows you to be flexible, search the same route at another time or date in our timetable.
Not in a rush? Check if you can travel the same route on trains that don't require a seat reservation. Select the ‘No reservation needed’ filter before clicking ‘search’ in our timetable (you can find this under ‘Options’ in the Rail Planner app). Or c heck out our reservation-free itineraries for more inspiration.
Can't find any trains with available seats or routes without reservations? It rarely happens, but if it does, why not consider alternative forms of transport, like the bus? Please note these options are not included in your Pass.
Have none of the above options yielded a solution? Consider going to a different destination or exchange your Pass (only possible if it's unused) and travel in the low season.
What's a Seat Reservation?
For some trains, like high-speed and night trains, it's mandatory to buy a seat reservation (this reservation guarantees your seat on the applicable train). Please note that you can only buy reservations when you have a valid Pass.
Don't have your Interrail Pass yet? Not sure whether you need seat reservations or how much they cost? Don't worry; we have all the answers.
All about reservations →
How to book a Seat Reservation?
Our tool lets you make reservations for many trains in Europe. Exceptions are the Baltic countries, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Ireland, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, Turkey, and the UK (except the Eurostar trains).
Print at home reservations can be booked up to 3 hours before departure. Paper ticket reservations have to be booked way before the train's departure. We currently have shipping lead times of at least 2 weeks but they can go up to 4 weeks depending on the country (e.g. overseas).
When a train cannot be booked through our self-service, you can find alternative ways to book your reservations here.
When do I need Seat Reservations?
If you're planning to see a lot in a short space of time on your Interrail trip, then you'll most likely need to buy some seat reservations for high-speed routes before you start your trip.
Can I avoid Seat Reservation costs?
It's good to keep in mind that most European trains don't need a reservation at all. Regional trains are a good alternative for fully booked high-speed and night trains.
You can use your Pass to travel on the national railways and some private railways in the countries where your Pass is valid. In some cases, these train networks reach airports as well. Check the full list here . The Pass even includes certain buses and ferries to make sure everything is within reach.
Some popular trains like the Eurostar, TGV and AVE are included in the Interrail Pass, but require that you purchase a seat reservation .
Our timetable covers most popular routes in Europe, but is not 100% accurate as not all European railways choose to share their timetable data. There are a few things you can do if you can't find your journey:
Planning in advance? Check back closer to the time
If you get no results for your chosen journey, check back in a few weeks. We update the timetable every month with the latest data from the railway companies.
Can’t find your station? Try another spelling
Try searching again with the city or station's local spelling. If you still see no results, you can check missing train times by country below.
Can't find your train? Check direct with the railway company
Not all railway companies share their timetable data with us, so unfortunately results for the countries below might be missing or incomplete. Choose a country to check timetables on the national railway company's website:
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Croatia Great Britain
Northern Ireland
Republic of Ireland
North Macedonia
For general information on routes and seat reservations in each country, check our information on trains by country .
You can make seat reservations through the Interrail.eu website for 95% of all European trains . To do this, you need an Interrail Pass and an Interrail.eu account . You can also book many trains through our Rail Planner app .
Reservations for Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the Benelux will be sent to you as e-tickets. You need to print these e-tickets and bring with you on the train. For other countries, you'll receive your reservations as paper tickets through registered mail.
Please check out other reservation options if you want to make reservations for domestic trains in Portugal, or any trains in Ireland, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Serbia, or Turkey.
Most reservations are non-refundable. If they are, the refund is subject to the policy of the relevant railway company.
When you purchase a seat reservation through our website, the refund policy of the relevant railway company and country apply. You can find the applicable refund policies in our Exchange and Refund Conditions for Reservations . Please be aware that most reservation tickets are non-refundable, and no changes can be made after booking.
Requesting a refund
You can request a refund via the Reservations Overview in your personal Interrail account. You will find the option to request a refund at the bottom of the overview box for your selected reservation. Our system will tell you if your train reservation is refundable. After you accept the refund conditions, you can go ahead and cancel the reservation. Make sure to file your request before departure of the train concerned. A cancelled Reservation Ticket can never be reinstated and becomes invalid.
If you’ve got an electronic reservation ticket , the refund will be automatic once your cancellation is confirmed (you don’t need to send the ticket to our office in the Netherlands).
Want to return a paper reservation ticket? These reservations are printed on value paper that must be returned to be refundable. We’ll send you the return address once your cancellation is confirmed, and then you need to send the ticket back to our office (within one month of the departure date) for us to start processing the refund. You’re responsible for the cost of shipping, and if your paper ticket gets lost in the post – it’s best to use registered shipping.
We will transfer the refundable amount to your original payment method (for paper reservation tickets, you must return the physical ticket(s) first). The refund amount may vary per train type, and booking fees or shipping costs are never refunded.

We’re currently working on making this information available to our travellers before they buy the Pass. Until then, you can check the number of seats left for Interrail Pass holders on most railway carriers' websites. You can find more information about this on our How to book seats page . Please note that the number of seats on a train for Pass holders differs from the total number of unsold seats on the train as seats for Pass holders are usually limited.
We suggest the following platforms for checking if there are still seats left for Pass holders:
- For TGV trains within the country, please check this website .
- For Eurostar train connections to the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, please check B-Europe .

Note: If you're planning to travel during the summer or the holiday season, we recommend checking seat availability for popular routes before purchasing a Pass or to consider buying point-to-point tickets or travelling on reservation-free routes in case seats for busy routes are already sold out.
