Perhaps more than any form of travel, the road trip is stamped in the American imagination. And when it comes to an East Coast road trip, no region is as underrated. Sure, it lacks the sprawl of the middle and west of the country , but the vast number of states, four distinct seasons (beyond Florida’s endless summer, that is), and incredible range of cultures prove the East Coast is the coast with the most—and the only possible way to sample its infinite variety is behind the wheel. Here are nine of our favorite East Coast road trip itineraries, including where to stop, where to stay, and what to eat along your drive.

Small but mighty: New Haven to Newport

Hit the highlights of two of America’s smallest states, Connecticut (#3) and Rhode Island (#1) with the 100-mile drive along US-1 from New Haven, Connecticut, to Newport, Rhode Island. This journey is a cinch for Bostonians and New Yorkers alike, and is chock-full of underrated pizza spots, scenic cliffs, and, of course, historic mansions. It’s about a four-hour drive across countless coral and limestone islets on a two-lane highway, so use the slow-moving traffic as an excuse to stop to sightsee, eat, snorkel, or swim. After crossing the long and narrow seven-mile bridge, look forward to the most beautiful—and famous—parts of the Florida Keys, including Bahia Honda State Park and the self-proclaimed Conch Republic (aka Key West).

Where to stop: Swim among Technicolor tropical fish at either John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo or Sombrero Reef off Marathon in the Middle Keys. Organized snorkeling tours are available at both. Also get some beach time at Bahia Honda State Park. Sitting at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico at mile marker 37 of US-1/Overseas Highway, this 524-acre beach park has some of the finest stretches of sand in the Florida Keys . There are both secluded and more trafficked spots for sunbathing and excellent photo opps of the largest intact section of Henry Flagler’s elevated overseas railroad.

Where to eat: Where Miami ends and the Overseas Highway begins, there’s an option for taking a secondary road, Card Sound Road, to initially reach the Upper Keys (you’ll then connect to the Overseas Highway). Take the Card Sound detour, and stop for lunch at Alabama Jacks , a waterfront dive bar and eatery with the best conch fritters and mahi mahi sandwiches in the Keys. If opting for the entirety of the Overseas Highway, stop for lunch at Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen , ordering the catch of the day (usually snapper) and an obligatory slice of key lime pie (note: they have whole pies available to-go).

Where to stay: Spend the night relaxing at The Reach Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton , located on a quiet stretch of beach but just a short walk from the bustle of central Key West.

Giving it 100: Vermont Route 100

Spanning more than 200 miles of idyllic New England countryside and almost the entire length of Vermont, this route takes you through countless Norman Rockwell-esque towns. Pass country stores and farm stands and explore the well-traversed stops of Wilmington, Ludlow, Killington, Warren, and Stowe.

Where to stop: In Weston, browse around the Vermont Country Store (est. 1946) where you’ll find everything from old-fashioned fudge to seersucker pajamas. In Brookfield, stock up traditional goat milk’s caramel sauce at the family-run Fat Toad Farm and watch the crew making the good stuff on this working farm (There are no tours per se but you can observe the process during daylight hours most Mondays-Thursdays). Where to stop: Plan to spend a few mealtimes in Portland . Further north near Bar Harbor, plan a day in Acadia National Park. The USA is packed with bucket list cities, parks and attractions but if you’re looking for the best of the west coast we have 25 favorite spots or the best of the east coast, keep reading!

1. Dry Tortugas National Park, Flordia: This national park off the coast of Florida is comprised of islands and features an abundance of marine and bird life!

2. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts : This little gem of an island is in the south of Massachusetts and has the cutest colonial style.

3. Baltimore, Maryland : This city is quirky, it’s adorable, it’s charming – that’s why they call it Charm City – and it’s well worth the stop.

4. Atlantic City, New Jersey : Known as the Las Vegas of the east, Atlantic City offers casinos, wide beaches, and boardwalks.

I grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, RI and then lived in Southern Florida. Some of my greatest childhood vacations were in Martha’s Vineyard! This list is great!

I have a good experience of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to explore the beauty of this alluring garden and always spent lovely time there. It is a really good place for fun and tourists can enjoy the hiking and many other most exciting activities.

Yes it is one of my absolute favorite places, so gorgeous! 🙂

you said the best time to visit East coast the USA is November to February. I’m planning my trip in mid October. What will you recommend this? Also, tell me how many days will be enough in the US if I just want to explore the Cali and Michigan

Yes, mid October is a great time to visit the East Coast! October/November you might see some leaves changing colors for fall, which is very hard to time right. The US is huge so you would need to save time by flying between California and Michigan. It depends, you can see maybe some of one area of Michigan like Ann Arbor in a weekend, but California is huge and each major city might ideally require at least 3 to 4 days to fully enjoy from: (in order of my favorites): San Diego to San Francisco to LA.

Absolutely October is a great time to visit the East Coast, you might even be lucky to see the fall foliage leaves changing colors! California and Michigan are far apart so it depends on how much you want to see but if you have a limited amount of time at least 3-5 days each per city. Keep in mind California’s many destinations like San Francisco or LA or San Diego can also be far apart too and you need at least 3-5 days for each city in California! Hope that helps! 🙂

New York , one of the East Coast major cities, is a vibrant mixture of art, food, fashion, and entertainment. It is one of the best East Coast cities with a myriad of iconic things to see and do. 

The Empire State Building stands 380 meters high, and its main observation deck is on the 86th floor. It is still the 44th highest skyscraper in the world and is spectacular to visit at night (open till 02.00). The One World Trade Centre is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. The 93-meter high Statue of Liberty is another must-see. You can get there by ferry, and there is also a museum that is worth visiting.

A trip yo New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Central Park one of the absolute must-see places on the East Coats. It sits in the middle of Manhattan and is huge with 25,000 trees, a lake, ponds and fountains. The easiest way to explore is on foot or by metro. 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art backs onto Fifth Avenue and contains 5,000 years of art from all over the world – if you love art, it could take you a whole day to see it all! Other places to visit include the Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, and Brooklyn Bridge plus the myriad of different shops. Grab an early dinner because Broadway is a must-do in the evening – there are 41 shows to choose from!

I recommend staying in Hotel 32 32 situated in the heart of Mid-town East, just one block from the subway and within walking distance of Times Square and other famous landmarks. Rooms are contemporarily styled with marble bathrooms and flat-screen TV, and many have a small kitchen.

Washington, DC 

No travel to East Coast USA is complete without a visit to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC – one of the best cities on the East Coast. This beautiful and historic city is located 5 hours south of New York City on the East Coast. DC is best known for its politics and historic landmarks, but it is also a city filled with vibrant neighbourhoods, incredible nature and great food.

Must see locations include walking on the National Mall and taking in the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, White House, and Capitol building. Tip : Make sure you check them out at night when there are fewer crowds and beautiful photo ops! 

Take time to explore one or two of the free 18 Smithsonian museums and galleries in the city. If exploring outdoors is more your interest, you can’t go wrong visiting Rock Creek Park located in the middle of the city with 2000 acres of lovely trails and bridges. 

Off the tourist path, check Union Market in NE and the lively H Street Corridor with some of the best local restaurants. You can even take the only free Streetcar up and down H Street. (Highly recommend Toki Underground or Maketto).

Washington, DC, has  many great hotels  at all price points. The best mid-budget hotel with a fabulous location is the Hyatt House at the Wharf in Southwest DC. It is close to downtown offers suites with kitchenettes and waterfront views!

Boston, one of the biggest East Coast cities of USA is also one of the oldest settlements in the USA. It was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula, Atlantic Ocean in 1630 by Puritan settlers from the English town of the same name. Here you can find many historical sites, museums, parks, universities. Boston is one of the best places to visit in the East Coast for history buffs.

The best place to start your visit is downtown. From South Station, where you will probably arrive in the city, visit Chinatown first and Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. From there continue to Old State House. In the historic Faneuil Hall Market, where you can find many restaurants. You should try their baked beans, clam chowder, lobster sandwich, and oysters. 

Continue to the north to find the Freedom Trail that comprises American Revolution sites set on a path marked with red lines on the 2.5-mile sidewalk. It starts at the Boston Common, America’s oldest public park, and ends at the famed Bunker Hill Monument. 

If you are a baseball fan, you should head west and visit Fenway Park with almost 38,000 seats, home to the Red Sox team since 1912. It hosted the World Series 11 times. 

Boston is also home to the centre of knowledge with some of the best schools and universities including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lesley University, and Hult International Business School in Cambridge.

New Orleans

New Orleans is one of the best East Coast cities for bubbling excitement and history at every turn. With some of the most delicious food and drinks in the country, fantastic music and very entertaining nightlife – it really is one of the best places to travel on the East Coast, that often gets overlooked!

Top things to do here include taking a food tour. It’s a great way to get a sampling of all the local cuisines and learn the difference between Creole and Cajun cooking. See a live jazz show – New Orleans is the place where jazz was born. Here, you’ll find many incredible live jazz shows at night. Take a cemetery tour – NOLA’s historical tombs are above ground (due to the high water table). They are actually quite beautiful and interesting to see. In fact, New Orleans is one of the best East Coast vacation destinations for foodies and jazz fans!

If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Royal Sonesta is a nice hotel in a prime location. Pro tip: if you pick a room on the Bourbon Street side, you’ll have some fun views, but it will be LOUD at night. (They provide earplugs, but just an FYI. Bourbon Street is crazy until the sunrises!) Another great option is to stay at one of the many awesome  Airbnbs in New Orleans .

· Café Du Monde – for the best beignets!

· Brennan’s – for a fine dining experience with some yummy Creole dishes on the menu. Be sure to also try the Bananas Foster.

Chicago 

Chicago is a city that fantastically blends old and new, modern and historic – an absolute must-see city on your East Coast travel. It is the home of so much incredible art deco architecture, contemporary sculpture and design and many exciting East Coast attractions such as hidden-away jazz and blues bars that come alive in the dark of night.  

A three day stay in Chicago  is enough to just scratch the surface, but it would easily be possible to spend longer here. Staying around the Magnificent Mile is an excellent idea because you’re mostly walking distance to downtown and attractions like Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverwalk.  

In winter, Chicago can be bitterly cold, but so rewarding. Lake Michigan freezes over and looks utterly magical from up close at Oak Street Beach. In summer months, the same spot transforms from a winter wonderland into a lovely small swimming beach with fantastic city views.  

Millennium Park is a huge drawcard to Chicago, and most visitors will be familiar with the bean-shaped reflective Cloudgate sculpture that has become synonymous with the city. But Millennium Park has much more to offer including a winter ice-skating rink and an installation called the Crown Fountain which features faces of Chicago residents projected on two pillars at opposite ends of a reflecting pool.  

The food of Chicago is also a huge drawcard. Visitors absolutely cannot leave the city without trying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza or a Chicago-style hotdog from the iconic hot dog restaurant Portillo’s.

If you’re visiting the United States for the first time or travelling to a state beyond your own, Atlanta in Georgia is one of the best East Coast cities to visit! Austin, Texas, is one of the best places to visit on the East Coast of USA. Located in the middle of the state, Austin is known for its excellent barbecue, bat colony, and the pink granite capitol building. 

Barbecue is a Texan tradition. However, no one in Austin does it quite like Franklin BBQ. It is so good, you’ll definitely regret it if you don’t add Franklin’s to your  Austin weekend itinerary . Crowds gather in the morning to wait in line for a taste, be sure to arrive early for your best picks of the meats. Their beef ribs, brisket, and pulled pork are to die for! 

If you’re looking to best things to do on the East Coast for wildlife, you may have heard of the bats underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge. The bridge crosses the Colorado River in the middle of the city and is home to over 1.5 million bats. 

During the spring and summer, venture out to Lady Bird Lake or the Colorado River around dusk, you’ll be treated to a view of the largest bat colony in the world leaving their home in search of dinner. 

Amongst other unique sights in the city, Austin is also home to a pink capitol building. The Texas State Capitol Building is pink due to the sunset red granite, also known as pink granite, found north of the city. Florida has many top-notch attractions, and  Disney World  is one of the most unique and best places to vacation on the East Coast for families. There’s nothing like it anywhere else. The other Disney parks are special, but Disney World tops them all.

The Texas Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country is by far, one of the best places to go in the East Coast and  the most beautiful places to visit in Texas.  It’s a large expanse of land between Austin and San Antonio featuring rolling green hills, rivers, historic small towns, and Texas’ wine region. 

Some destinations like Hamilton Pool and the distilleries in Dripping Springs or the original location Salt Lick BBQ can be visited as a day trip from Austin. But with so much beauty to discover, the Hill Country is one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. 

Rent a car and hit the road to explore the region’s small towns and the beautiful scenery in between. Fredericksburg is the most popular in the area and a great place to use as a base. 

Highway 290 leading into town is lined with vineyards, try Predernales and Becker for some of the state’s best wine and views!. 

Hike Enchanted Rock and try authentic German food downtown. Just 15 minutes outside of Fredericksburg is Luckenbach. This historic town hosts live music on the back patio of its original post office turned honkey-tonk bar. 

Another must-see historic small town is Gruene. It’s home to the oldest dance hall in Texas and regularly hosts some of the state’s most popular musicians. Dine at the Gristmill next door for a delicious dinner perched on the cliffs over the river.

As one of the oldest National Parks, Acadia preserves some of the most rugged coastline of the North Atlantic United States. Named for the early French settlers to the area, the Acadian wilderness boats beautiful hills, forests, and seas teeming with wildlife (particularly the lobster that the state is famous for). 

Among some of the highlights to Acadia is some of the best hiking in the northeast and getting to see the first rays of light in the US from the peak of Cadillac Mountain. 

No park in the northeast compares to Acadia’s size and diversity, and it’s the only park designated as a “National Park” in this region of the United States. 

If you do visit, be sure to check out some of the popular hikes such as the precipice and beehive trails, although they are maybe tough for those afraid of heights and exposed cliffs. 

There are great trails along the water and among the hills around Jordan Pond for some more relaxing hikes. For those with more time, a visit to Schoodic Peninsula and Isle Au Haut, which are beautiful and fare less touristed than the park’s main areas.

Everglades National Park

The World Heritage Site of the Everglades National Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast. A vibrant ecosystem, located in the sunny state of Florida, located only 1.5 hours west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, it makes a great side trip to visit this heaven for lovers of outdoor activities. With loads of nature, many hiking trails to choose from, and water activities like the traditional airboat. 

During your trip to the Everglades, one of the East Coast must see places is the  Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife Refuge , the second largest mangrove forest in the world forming fascinating labyrinths of water and islands with very rich wildlife, including some endangered species. 

When you are in the area, explore the Everglades City, a charming fishing village with a population of 443 people, with great food, and a long history. It is known as the fishing and stone crab capital of Southwest Florida. 

The Everglade City is located on the western gateway to Everglades National Park, nearby Chokoloskee Island. If you are looking to spend a few days exploring this incredible area, the  Ivey House Everglades Adventures Hotel  is a great option. 

The best time to visit is between October and May when the weather is cooler and drier. The temperature and the humidity levels are lower, the mosquitoes are not around, and hurricane season has passed. During this time, the average temperature ranging between max 78.4°F (25.8°C) and min 59.7°F (15.4°C). 

It is also the best time to see the local wildlife. This is the time that manatees migrate to the Everglades. Also, the water levels drop during the dry season, and a large number of animals congregate around the water holes, making wildlife viewing an easy endeavour. 

If you visit during the summertime, between June and September, book your hikes and outdoor adventures for the morning, to avoid the hottest parts of the day and the frequent summer storms in the afternoon. Everglades National Park is one of the most beautiful places to vacation on East Coast.

Shenandoah National Park

One of the most beautiful places to go in East Coast United States is less than 2 hours from Washington, DC. Shenandoah National Park stretches along a ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering scenic views, classic park lodges, and excellent hiking. 

Skyline Drive winds along the mountain ridge for 105 miles and is the centrepiece of the park. Along the drive, 75 overlooks give easy access to eastern and westward views of the Virginia mountains and valleys. Over 100 trails, including the iconic Appalachian Trail, criss-cross the park. 

Many of the best things to do are in  Shenandoah National Park’s Central District . Here you can stay in either of two lodges, Skyland or Big Meadows, and explore the park’s natural and historic sites. Both lodges have restaurants for dining with a view and meals to-go. 

Popular hikes in the area include Stony Man, Dark Hollow Falls, Mary’s Rock, Hawksbill, and the wheelchair accessible Limberlost Trail. Visit the Harry Byrd Visitor Center in Big Meadows to learn about the park’s nature, the people who once lived here, and the effort to build Skyline Drive. 

Shenandoah is a year-round destination, but most facilities close in the winter. Late spring and early fall are two of the best times to visit when mountain laurel and fall foliage colour the views.

Silver Springs State Park, Florida

If you’re looking for the best places to visit on the sunshine coast, you’re in luck.  Florida is filled with hidden gems like Silver Springs State Park .  Tucked into the Ocala National Forest, this blue lagoon is naturally heated by underwater thermal vents. At only $6 a person for admission, you would think this haven would be overrun with tourists, but fortunately for you, it remains a secret to most travellers. 

You should plan to spend one whole day in the springs and be sure to bring a snorkel. Manatees frequent Silver Spring State Park lagoon during the winter months to keep warm, and it’s not uncommon to have the opportunity to swim with them. Even without the manatees, the clear blue water and a plethora of fish make for some good snorkelling and free diving. If you have a kayak or wish to rent one you can also leave the lagoon and explore the maze of mangroves that cut through Floridas’ centre. 

Most local Floridians spend the day swimming and BBQing during the hot and humid summer months, but the Silver Springs State Park is a perfect and stunningly beautiful destination to visit year-round.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

When it comes to National Parks in Texas, Big Bend National Park takes the cake. From hiking its high-elevation peaks, exploring the arid desert and lush-green valleys, taking a dip in its natural hot springs, beautiful stargazing, camping, and even a potential stop in Mexico for lunch, Big Bend National Park is one of the best places to vacation on the East Coast.

What makes Big Bend National Park so popular?

Big Bend is one of the largest parks in North America with over 800,000 acres to explore. Seclusion and quiet are guaranteed here. With its vastness, comes a diverse ecosystem which includes the Rio-Grande river, the Chihuahuan Desert and the Chisos mountain range. Each part of the park has a drastically different climate, flora, and fauna. It also boasts of one of the darkest night skies of any national park in the lower 48 states and is considered one of the best places to go stargazing.

Some of the must-see things to do in Big Bend: 

Go hiking at some of its excellent trails – There are a lot of hiking trails within the park ranging from easy to hard. Some of these are stroller accessible as well. 

Cross the border into Boquillas, Mexico: Big Bend is along the US-Mexico border, so you can take a boat ride into Boquillas Mexico which is a great day trip and highly recommended. Don’t forget your passport.

Go on a drive on the scenic along Ross Maxwell Drive: You can enjoy Big Bend from the confines of your car by taking the beautiful Ross Maxwell drive. 

Visit the Mc. Donald’s observatory: The star parties here are very popular with kids and adults alike. Don’t miss an opportunity to see the planets up close at one of these. 

Visit the Ghost town of Terlingua: The nearby town of Terlingua has some awesome food, lodging and ruins in its ghost town to explore. Enjoy a fun evening here.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There is no doubt that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the United States and one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. This area is located along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. The mountains are part of the Southern Appalachians. This is America’s most visited national park, but it is huge, so you will definitely be able to feel as if you are away from the bustle of everyday life.

The park has ridge upon ridge of seeming endless swaths of forest-covered mountains. The ever-present morning fog settles in the folds of these ridges to give this area the nickname “The Smoky Mountains.”

You will find many activities in this area. The hardest part will be choosing what to do. There are auto tour routes, bicycling, fishing, hiking, white water rafting, horseback riding, and much more.

This park is world-renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life. It is considered a biologists paradise. One of the most popular things to do in the park is to observe wildlife, including elk and black bear. You will also be able to see old settler’s towns from the early 1800s to get a feel for what life was like in these mountains in the past.

Another fun activity is waterfall chasing. There are innumerable waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some are just a short walk off a roadway, and others are deep in woods down hard to find trails. The waterfalls in the park are simply stunning.

Most Beautiful Islands of the United States

Oahu, hawaii.

Hawaii is one of the best places to visit in the USA. It’s got the perfect climate, amazing landscapes and friendly locals. While you can be pretty happy visiting any of the Hawaiin Islands you should put Oahu to the top of your list. It is slightly less touristy than some of the other islands, especially if you stay on the North Shore, and it has some of the most ruggedly beautiful scenery. 

The North Shore is a mecca for surfers, and you’ll notice the laid-back surf vibes as soon as you arrive. The pace of life doesn’t move too quickly up there, which is a great way to live. One of the main attractions on the island of Oahu is Kualoa Regional Park, where the original Jurassic Park was filmed. 

You can go on a quad tour through the park or simply enjoy the views from a distance at the beach on the north end of Kaneohe Bay. The mountains here are formed into deep ridges covered in tropical greenery that truly gives off the Jurassic Park feel. From the beach, you’ll also get a cool view out over the water towards Mokoli’i island. 

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach to spend the day on then head to Lanikai Beach where you’ll find white sand and crystal-clear blue water. This is also one of the most protected beaches on the island, making it ideal for swimming, stand up paddleboarding and kayaking. You’ll also get a great view out to the Mokalua Islands right from the palm tree-lined beach. 

The Courtyard by Marriott Oahu North Shore is a great place to stay as it is right on the beach but also has a huge pool for you to relax in. You can find it near the town of Haleiwa on the North Shore of the island.

Kauai, Hawaii

The most beautiful destination in the USA has to be Kauai, Hawaii. It’s an island full of adventure and relaxation. With majestic coastlines and lush forests, white sand beaches and deep canyons, Kauai, Hawaii has got to be on your USA Bucket list!

This tiny island chain is known for its swaying palm trees, laid-back culture and beautiful beaches. In fact,  Kauai’s beaches  are some of the best in all of Hawaii. The NaPali Coast along the northern shore is rugged, gorgeous and a truly breathtaking experience. Giant, jagged cliffs reach out of the sea up to the sky. The unexplored forests and waterfalls make for a truly unique destination.

Of course, all the beauty comes with a price. The best ways to see Kauai, Hawaii on a budget is to wait for affordable flights and find inexpensive accommodations. You will find the best deals on vacation properties and condos versus hotels.

Sanibel Island 

If your dream US destination includes a secluded tropical island and  beautiful beaches, Sanibel Island  may be just what you’re looking for. Tucked away just off Ft. Myers on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sanibel is a small barrier island, separated by a tiny inlet from its sister island of Captiva just next door.

These islands are a world away from the bustling nearby cities of Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples, and offer one of the best getaways in the US for a relaxed family gathering or romantic escape.

There’s plenty to enjoy on Sanibel if you love world-class shopping and dining. Mackinac Island, Michigan 

Are you looking to visit the most beautiful destination in the USA? Hands down, the place is Mackinac Island, Michigan. Located between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state, this magical island is just about eight miles around and requires a ferry to get there. 

But wait, there’s more! The real impressive part of this island is that no cars are allowed on the island. Everything is done by foot, bike or horse and carriage. It is like stepping back in time. This is a top  travel bucket list  destination in the Midwest but is increasing in visibility around the world. 

Some of the must-do activities on the island are: a carriage tour to get the full overview of history and layout of the land, afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, a rum runner form the Pink Pony, definitely walk around and taste fudge from all the shops – the island is known for its famous fudge, watch a sunrise on the lawn of Mission Point Resort and sunset from the West Bluff or the porch of the Grand Hotel, rent a bike and ride the outskirts of the island, visit Arch Rock, eat fancy for an evening at The Woods Restaurant, and if you are there during the Lilac Festival, take it all in. 

Popular dishes on the island include white fish anything (dip, sandwiches, spreads, etc.) and the pecan ball served at Grand Hotel restaurants.

Nantucket is a charming island which lies 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Along with Cape Cod and  Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket  has a well-earned reputation as an idyllic summer vacation destination.

Nantucket is easily accessible from the mainland and Martha’s Vineyard by ferry or plane. Thanks to the need to organise a flight or a ferry, the summer crowds on Nantucket are much less than on mainland Cape Cod. There are only about 10,000 year-round residents, and the population increases to about 50,000 in the summer months.

Nantucket is a small and fairly flat island which is easy to explore by foot or by cycle. There are two towns on the island with a long and narrow shape (approximately 15 miles long by 3 miles wide). It’s perfect for people who love the outdoors with hiking, cycling and water activities, such as kayaking and surfing. It’s easy to rent bicycles as well as water sports equipment. There are about 30 public beaches to explore as well. 

Historically, Nantucket was influential in the whale trade, which made the island very wealthy. Nowadays, there is a whaling museum and three lighthouses that attest to its maritime importance. Today, the island’s wealth is mainly derived from tourism to a well-heeled crowd. 

There are luxury hotels and charming B&B’s for accommodation as well as plenty of boutique shops and restaurants. The vibe is preppy chic. 

Located in a historic Greek Revival building, we like the Periwinkle Inn B&B which has a great location in town within walking distance of many activities. Created from a former lifesaving station, the HI Nantucket Hostel is also renowned for being very nice with a great location.

28 Best Beaches on the East Coast — From Maine to Florida

These East Coast beaches have blue waters, soft sand, and fun activities for everyone.

The East Coast of the U.S. is home to some seriously stunning landscapes, from rugged mountains to pastoral valleys. But no area showcases nature's artistry more than the region's gorgeous coastline.

The states bordering the eastern shore encompass nearly 30,000 miles of coastline,  according to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management . But with so many states to choose from, it may be hard to decide which beaches to visit, especially when you weigh all your options, from the rocky coves of Maine and the iconic boardwalks of the Jersey Shore to secluded Southern barrier islands.

Before we dig into our picks, though, let us start by saying there are plenty more beaches worthy of their day in the sun and your vacation time. So, by no means is this list ranked, exhaustive, or a slight to other local favorites. To keep things simple, we've compiled a list of two beaches per state. Here are 28 of the best beaches on the East Coast.

Sand Beach, Maine

Acadia National Park  is one of the most stunning places to explore in the spring, summer, and fall. After hiking through its seemingly endless trails, make your way to Sand Beach, a small stretch of shoreline accessible via Park Loop Road. The water will be cold, but the refreshing feeling is worth it, thanks to the solitude and stellar views. 

Gooch's Beach, Maine

Those looking for more action can head to Gooch's Beach in Kennebunk. The soft-sand stretch is popular with surfers, thanks to a  clean break  that's usually best in the fall, though the waves have been known to pick up in the summer if a good storm is on the way. While there's no snack bar here, there are lifeguards, so families can feel more at ease.

Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

For miles of sandy shore, head to  Hampton Beach State Park . Visitors here can camp, fish, picnic, and, of course, swim in the Atlantic waters. And because it's a state park, it comes with all the necessary facilities, including bathrooms, for a comfortable experience.

Weirs Beach, New Hampshire

Technically not a coastal beach, this beach is located on Lake Winnipesaukee, but it's just as glorious as a seaside escape along the Atlantic. Come for plenty of sand and calm waters that are perfect for small children. The beach also has a lively boardwalk and other happenings, including lake cruises, tons of dining options, and live music every once in a while.

Race Point Beach, Massachusetts

Race Point Beach, located in Provincetown, comes with miles of silky sand. It's a prime place to get a summertime glow or sit with a cozy sweater to watch a fall sunrise or sunset. It even has a lighthouse up on the dunes (though you will have to hike about two miles to get there, according to the local Chamber of Commerce ). 

Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts

For a gentler shoreline, head to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, a popular spot for families — locals and visitors alike. Though it's just 25 miles from Race Point Beach, the waters here tend to be much calmer, plus it features facilities, including a bathroom and rinse-off showers, as well as lifeguards all summer long. 

Easton's Beach, Rhode Island

Easton's Beach  in Newport is as idyllic as they come. The charming beach is also Newport's largest, making it easy to find a spot to lay down your blanket. In addition to amenities like a snack bar and bathrooms, it also has the bonus of a carousel and the Save the Bay Aquarium. 

East Matunuck State Beach, Rhode Island

As the Ocean State, Rhode Island has its fair share of spectacular beaches, but none has as much charm as East Matunuck. Nestled at the far end of the state, East Matunuck State Beach is equipped with typical perks such as a snack bar, bathrooms, and summertime lifeguards keeping a watchful eye, as well as gorgeous dunes and a view of Block Island. Plus, it's down the street from the famed  Matunuck Oyster Bar , which is deserving of the short walk for a dozen oysters and a cocktail for lunch. 

Compo Beach, Connecticut

Westport has several beaches ideal for exploration, but  Compo is the standout. The 29-acre park includes a large sandy beach that looks out onto the Long Island Sound with a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk and a concession stand. For those looking to break a sweat and have a little fun, there are also two sand volleyball courts.

Harvey's Beach, Connecticut

Harvey's Beach in Old Saybrook is the stuff of small-town dreams. The sandy beach, lined with gorgeous dunes, is a place where visitors can swim, fish, boat, and hunt for shells. There's a concession stand, changing rooms, and a small playground for kids too. 

Rockaway Beach, New York

For New Yorkers, Rockaway Beach in Queens is as convenient as it gets. It's accessible via public transit from Manhattan and is a stellar spot to escape the hustle and bustle for a quick swim or a paddle out to surf. (It's technically the only beach in New York City  where it's legal to surf .) 

Cooper's Beach, New York

Discover Long Island

There's no bad beach in the Hamptons , but for a more local vibe, make your way to Cooper's Beach. It's a gorgeous little pocket of sand along the Atlantic that's near restaurants. Even better, it's known for being just a little quieter in the summer than more popular nearby locales. 

The Cove, New Jersey

The beaches along Cape May go on for some 2.5 miles, and the best part about them is that they're within walking distance of many local accommodations and all the top attractions (a.k.a. those famous Victorian homes). But Cape May isn't just one beach; it's made up of many. One of the best is The Cove, ideal for everyone from families to solo surfers, kayakers, and those seeking a break from the more active beach scene down the shore.

Sandy Hook, New Jersey 

Further north, beachgoers should make their way to Sandy Hook. The expansive stretch is, once again, perfect for swimming, fishing, or paddling. The beach is also part of the larger  Gateway National Recreation Area,  which has miles of hiking and biking trails for when you've had enough of the sand. 

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Picturesque Bethany Beach is covered with grassy dunes sprouting up around the wooden boardwalk that goes on for a half mile. Come here for a stroll or sit and savor the sun for as long as you can before checking out the nearby shops and food vendors.

Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware

Cape Henlopen State Park , which can be found at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, features more than six miles of pristine coastline, including the Point, the exact spot where the bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. After spending some time at the beach, head to the Seaside Nature Center to learn more about the area's flora and fauna. 

Ocean City, Maryland

Looking for a really, really big beach? Then, it's time to plan a trip to Ocean City, home to 10 miles of sand. The beach here is ideal for everything you'd ever want to do by the shore: surf, kayak, build sandcastles, play volleyball, and more. Ocean City also prides itself on its plentiful free activities in the summer, including movie nights and concerts. 

Assateague Island, Maryland

Yes, there are two miles of beaches you can relax on at Assateague Island. But rather than park yourself in one spot for an entire day, stop in, get some sun, then go off and explore this fantastic island . Hike, see the lighthouse, and, if you're lucky, spot one of the famed wild horses running down the shore (just don't touch or feed them for your own safety). 

Virginia Beach, Virginia 

Virginia Beach is a lively slice of land where the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean meet. The destination is known for its buzzing boardwalk, plentiful events, and a standout dining scene steps from the sand, making it easy to go back and forth between the water and good eating all day long.

Buckroe Beach, Virginia 

Further north from Virginia Beach, you will find  Buckroe Beach , a smaller stretch of sand that feels scaled back compared to its more bustling counterpart. At Buckroe, visitors can head out for a swim, walk the pier, and take the kids to the nautical-themed playground for a laid-back yet equally pleasurable day at the beach. 

Nags Head, North Carolina

What would a list of great Eastern Seaboard beaches be without mention of the Outer Banks? For the ultimate in solitude, head to Nags Head and its 12 miles of sandy shoreline. There are plenty of public access points — all you need to do is find a patch that's ideal for you and set up shop. Just make sure to pack enough water and snacks to last the day. If you really want to unplug, consider camping in the Outer Banks — at the Oregon Inlet Campground, you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

Emerald Isle, North Carolina

If you like the island life, make your way to Emerald Isle, which has fewer than 4,000 permanent residents, but swells in population during the busy summer season. Located along South Carolina's  Grand Strand  coast sits Myrtle Beach, one of the most popular beach destinations in the state . Made up of several connected beaches, the sand here goes on for miles. It's ideal for families, friends, and all who want to soak in the rays together. Plus, its proximity to nearby restaurants, accommodations, and attractions makes it easy to pop in or stay for days. 

Burkes Beach, South Carolina

North Carolina isn't the only state with island paradise beaches. Just look to Burkes Beach in the ever-popular Hilton Head Island for proof.  Burkes Beach  is often considered the more local of the island's beaches, meaning it's both a bit more relaxed and comes with fewer restaurants nearby. That said, the trade-off of peace and quiet just might be worth having to pack a sandwich along with your other essentials .

North Beach on Tybee Island is made for those who enjoy long walks on the sand and hunting down the perfect seashells. It's a beachcomber's paradise and one that's easy to hop on and off between town shopping and dining excursions. Book a bed-and-breakfast for a charming stay.

Vero Beach, Florida

The family road trip has made a comeback and with it, families are looking for even more road trip ideas. While plenty of East Coasters have made the road trip down 95 to Florida over the years, now families want to take time to stop and explore along the way. With so much to see, we have divided this part of the country up into 20 different East Coast road trips, each of which could be done in a one-week vacation.

Each of these mini East Coast road trip itineraries will give you ideas for new ways to explore sections of the East Coast of the U.S.A. Check off one at a time or string a few together for a longer vacation.

20 East Coast Road Trips

Each of these East Coast road trip ideas should take approximately 7 to 10 days to complete as outlined. My goal is to only require one week of vacation time from work, since that is the typical family vacation. I’ve linked to some more detailed road trip itineraries and included maps to give you an overview of the route.

New England Coast: Boston to Bar Harbor, ME

The drive from Boston, Massachusetts up to Bar Harbor, Maine can be done in about four hours on the highway, but it is better to take the scenic route and explore Vacationland’s scenic coast along the way. One of the best East Coast road trips, this one is full of Maine foods like lobster rolls, blueberry soda, and whoopie pies; as well as lighthouses, rocky coasts, quaint small towns, and Acadia National Park .

Portland: spend 2 nights in Portland exploring the Old Port, maybe taking a lobster boat tour, climbing on the rocks by Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, or spending a day shopping at the L.L. Bean outlet up in Freeport. You could also visit some local breweries or take a day trip to Maine Wildlife Park in Gray to see some moose.

Where to stay: The Press Hotel , Inn by the Sea , or the Courtyard Marriott Waterfront

Boothbay Harbor: spend 1-2 nights in Boothbay Harbor . On your way, stop and enjoy the coastal towns, Giant’s Stairs in Harpswell, spend an afternoon soaking up the sun on Popham Beach, a rare sandy stretch of sand, and be sure to line up for lobster rolls at Red Eats.

The next day, get out on the water with one of Boothbay Harbor’s many sightseeing cruises to see puffins or whales, or rent a sea kayak to explore Muscongus Bay. Leave time to browse at the many boutiques in town.

Rockland: spend 1 night enjoying the artistic town of Rockland . Pop into the Center for Maine Contemporary Art or the Farnsworth Art Museum. If the outdoors holds more appeal, hop aboard a traditional Maine Windjammer for a short sail, walk along the Rockland Breakwater, or explore the trails at Camden Hills State Park. This arts city of Maine is such a delightful surprise!

Bar Harbor: finish up your road trip at the scenic town of Bar Harbor, just outside of Acadia National Park . You will want to spend 2 to 3 nights exploring the park. Try to catch a sunrise or sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, drive the Park Loop Road, relax on Sand Beach, stop to see the natural phenomenon at Thunder Hole, take in the view from Otter Cliffs, bike the Carriage Roads, and check out some of the popular hikes. White & Green Mountains: Boston, MA to Burlington, VT

The drive from Boston to Burlington takes only about 4 hours, but use this New England road trip to spend time enjoying the beautiful scenery of the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Green Mountains of Vermont along the way, especially during fall foliage season.

Boston: if you haven’t been to Boston , plan on spending 2 nights enjoying this historic city. Don’t miss the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum , walk the Freedom Trail, enjoy a swan boat tour in Boston’s Public Garden, and taste your way through Boston’s Little Italy in the North End.

Where to stay: Fairmont Copley Plaza , Boston Harbor Hotel

Lincoln, NH: Lincoln can make a nice home base for 1-2 nights of exploring the White Mountains . Hike through the Flume Gorge, zip line, or hike at Loon Mountain, ride the Mount Washington Cog Railway, or drive the Mount Washington Auto Road. There are also plenty of hikes to try, rock climbing, a scenic drive on the Kancamagus Highway , and splashing in the waterfalls at Diana’s Baths.

Stowe, VT: spend a couple of nights enjoying the Green Mountains from a home base in Stowe. On your drive from New Hampshire, you may want to stop at the Cabot cheese factory, Ben & Jerry’s Factory, and the Cold Hollow Cider Mill. In Stowe, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and other resort activities.

Burlington, VT: Finish your road trip with a night in the hip waterfront city of Burlington. There are so many things to do in Burlington, VT and you can check out nearby Shelburne Farm, and the ECHO museum. Or if you prefer lake life, finish with a few days on Lake Champlain at the Basin Harbor Hotel .

On your drive back to Boston, be sure to stop and stroll through the charming downtown of Woodstock.

Southern New England COast: New York, NY to Provincetown, MA

You should be able to make the trip from New York to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod in 5 to 6 hours, but the traffic can be horrendous on summer weekends so try to travel midweek for this east coast road trip if you can.

Mystic, CT: Break up the trip with a night in Mystic. You will want to visit the historic Mystic Seaport, stroll through downtown, and maybe stop in at the Mystic Aquarium. You will find plenty of things to do in Mystic with kids.

Where to stay: Mystic KOA , Inn at Mystic

Newport, RI: spend a night in the yachting capital of the world . You can walk the Cliff Walk, fly a kite at Brenton Point State Park, visit some of the Newport Mansions, shop along Thames, and take a sail in the harbor.

Where to stay: Newport Marriott , The Vanderbilt

Providence, RI: instead of skipping over Rhode Island’s Creative Capital, spend a night to discover this little gem. Take a Rhode Island food tour, visit the RISD Museum, take a gondola or river boat ride, bike along the East Bay bike path, and, if you are lucky, take in Providence’s famous Waterfire .

Where to stay: The Graduate Providence , Aloft Providence Downtown

Falmouth, MA: stay the next 2 nights on the elbow of Cape Cod in Falmouth. Take time to relax on the beach and then hop the ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket for a day. You can also ride the Cape Cod bike trail or visit the Woods Hole Science Aquarium.

Where to stay: Sea Crest Beach Hotel or Autocamp Cape Cod

Provincetown, MA: finish your road trip with a couple of nights in the unique and vibrant town of Provincetown. You can shop, dine, take a tour of the sand dunes , go on a whale-watching tour, climb the lighthouse, or visit the Pirate Museum. The best part is searching the tide pools at low tide and watching the sunset.

New York to Niagara Falls, NY

The drive from New York City to Niagara Falls can take 6 to 7 hours, but turn it into a road trip with a few days in the Finger Lakes region on the way and plenty of stops along the Western New York Upstate Eats Trail .

Watkins Glen: spend 2 nights in Watkins Glen, at the southern point of Seneca Lake. For fans of The Office, you may want to stop in Scranton, PA on your way for a self-driving tour of filming spots. Enjoy time on the lake, hike to the waterfalls in Watkins Glen State Park, or take a glider ride in Elmira, the Soaring Capital of the World.

Hammondsport: move over to Keuka Lake and spend a couple of nights in Hammondsport. You can enjoy water sports, wine tasting, and a day at the fascinating Corning Museum of Glass.

Niagara Falls: you will want to spend 2 to 3 nights in Niagara to explore all the attractions including the Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist, Old Fort Niagara, jet boat tours, and hiking trails in Niagara Falls State Park.

Where to stay: Sheraton Niagara Falls , Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

Buffalo: on your return to New York, stop in for some food, history, and fun in Buffalo . This city is going through a renaissance and plenty of fun activities along the waterfront (in summer or winter). Make sure you try some of these must-eat foods in Buffalo too!

Cooperstown: on your return trip, be sure to stop in Seneca Falls and visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Then spend a night in Cooperstown and visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

PA Pitstops: Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, PA

Driving from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh takes about five hours, but going straight through means you will miss out on some many historic, scenic, and family-fun spots along the way.

Lancaster: start your trip with a night in Lancaster’s Pennsylvania Dutch Country. You will want to take a buggy ride, indulge at an Amish feast, or take in some of the historic sites. You can also take a tour of the Turkey Hill Ice Cream Experience.

Where to stay: Residence Inn by Marriott Lancaster

Hershey: next stop is the sweetest place on earth, Hershey . You can spend the day at Hersheypark, visit Hershey’s Chocolate World, or the Hershey Experience. History buffs will enjoy the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, a good introduction before you head to Gettysburg.

Where to stay: Hershey Lodge

Gettysburg: next up is the historic town of Gettysburg . I would highly recommend a guided tour of the Battlefield, but there are many other things to do in town as well.

Laurel Highlands: the Laurel Highlands is a scenic mountainous region east of Pittsburgh offering spectacular natural scenery and outdoor recreation. You will want to spend 2 days rafting down the Ohiopyle, climbing through Pennsylvania’s largest cave at Laurel Caverns, and enjoying mountain resort activities including zip lining, rock climbing, summer tubing, and more.

Where to stay: Nemacolin Woodlands Resort

Pittsburgh: you can fit a lot into 1 day in Pittsburgh , but spend 2 nights if you can spare it. See the view from Mount Washington from the Duquesne Incline, visit the Heinz History Center, explore the Carnegie Science Center, and don’t miss the Tribute to Children statue of Fred Rogers near the Allegheny River. There is also the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and the Andy Warhol Museum. And if the Pirates are in town, try to catch a baseball game.

COlonial History: Philadelphia, PA to Williamsburg, VA

The drive from Philadelphia to Williamsburg takes about five hours but why not turn it into a learning experience with an American history road trip?

Valley Forge, PA: if you have already explored the historical sites of Philadelphia like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, you may want to venture out of the city for a visit to the Valley Forge National Historical Park .

Baltimore, MD: spend 2 nights in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, where you can easily visit Fort McHenry, visit the National Aquarium, stroll through the cobblestone streets of Fells Point, and enjoy the other Inner Harbor attractions.

Where to stay: Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor , Pier 5 Hotel Baltimore

Washington D.C.: you will want to spend at least 2 to 3 days exploring the nation’s capital. There are so many museums and monuments to explore, you may want to use our DC itinerary. Just remember if you want to visit the White House, you will need to make reservations in advance.

Williamsburg, VA : finish your road trip in Colonial Williamsburg. You will need 2 to 3 days to enjoy the sites, including a full day in Colonial Williamsburg , a visit to Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown, and Busch Gardens or Water Country USA .

Mid-atlantic Gems: Cape May, NJ to Chincoteague, VA

If you want to stick to the Mid-Atlantic coast, this road trip will bring you through cute Victorian towns, beautiful beaches, and nature preserves.

Cape May, NJ: start off your journey in Cape May. This quaint town isn’t like the rest of the Jersey Shore. Enjoy the gourmet restaurants, charming boutiques, and gingerbread-style Victorian homes.

Where to stay : Congress Hall

Lewes, DE: take the ferry across to Lewes, Delaware, another Victorian town full of history, cute cafes, and shops. You must stay a night so that you can take a sunset cruise past the lighthouse and if you get lucky, you may see some dolphins on the way.

Where to stay : Inn at Canal Square

Bethany Beach, DE: as you continue down to the beaches of Southern Delaware, you may also want to stop and check out some of the local breweries and wineries in this region. If you are seeking a boardwalk, combined with bike trails, and great restaurants, you may prefer Rehoboth Beach . Dewey Beach is full of seaside hotels and beach bars, along with gorgeous state beaches. But if you are seeking quiet for a few days at the beach, I would recommend Bethany Beach.

Chincoteague, VA: on your way to Assateague Island National Seashore to see the wild ponies , stop in the cute small town of Berlin, MD or for a stroll on the Ocean City boardwalk. To get up close to the wild horses, I would recommend taking a boat tour with Captain Dan from Chincoteague. Afterward, get some marsh mud ice cream at Island Creamery.

Where to stay: Hampton Inn and Suites Chincoteague Waterfront

Eastern Shore: Baltimore, MD to Virginia Beach, VA

Swing through Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore on your way down to Virginia Beach. You can then take the highway back to Baltimore, with a stop in Norfolk or Williamsburg on your return trip.

Annapolis, MD: start off with a night in Annapolis. Spend the day exploring some of Annapolis’ historic sites, including the State House and the U.S. Naval Academy, as well as the boutiques and galleries downtown. Don’t leave town without enjoying some crab cakes!

Where to stay: Graduate Annapolis

St. Michaels, MD: spend a night enjoying the Chesapeake side of the Eastern Shore. The charming town of St. Michaels offers up plenty of retail therapy options, but also cultural attractions like the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Nearby you can go tasting at local wineries and breweries, or get out on the water with a kayak or paddle board.

Where to stay: St. Michaels Harbour Inn

Chincoteague, VA : the kids will then enjoy a night on the other side of the peninsula, finding the wild ponies at Chincoteague or exploring the Assateague National Seashore. Be sure to stop for ice cream at the Island Creamery!

Virginia Beach, VA: there are so many things to do in Virginia Beach that you will want to spend a few days enjoying the wide sand beaches and exploring. If you want to take a day trip, pop over to Hampton to explore some early history or visit the Virginia Air and Space Museum.

Wi lliamsburg, VA: finish your road trip in Colonial Williamsburg. Plan on a full day in Colonial Williamsburg , and if you have more time, include a visit to Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown, Busch Gardens, or Water Country USA .

Skyline Drive: Washington DC to Charlottesville, VA

This road trip will bring you through Shenandoah National Park for a mix of outdoor adventures and historic landmarks. We covered this ground during part of a more extensive Virginia road trip a few years back.

Woodstock, VA : spend 2 nights in Woodstock, exploring nearby Shenandoah Caverns, climbing the Woodstock Tower, tubing on the Shenandoah River, enjoying summer sports at Bryce Resort, and hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Where to stay: Hampton Inn & Suites Woodstock

Harrisonburg, VA: spend the day exploring Shenandoah National Park and driving the Skyline Drive before arriving in Harrisonburg for the night. This is a great road trip for a college tour because James Madison University is also located here. Be sure to also stop at Kline’s Dairy Bar for its famous custard-style ice cream.

Where to stay: Residence Inn Harrisonburg

Charlottesville, VA: plan on spending 2 nights in Charlottesville . Stroll and shop downtown and then enjoy a traditional, Colonial-style luncheon at the historic Michie Tavern, followed by a visit to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate.

In the evening, head up to Carter Mountain Orchard to catch a sunset and some live music. On your second day, you can either explore more history at President James Monroe’s home, do some local wine tasting, tour the campus of the University of Virginia, or kayak along the James River.

Where to stay: Graduate Charlottesville

Richmond, VA: finish up your road trip with a couple of days in Richmond . While it was once the capital of the Confederate South, today the state capital is finding a new identity with plenty of street art, craft beer, and fun dining options. You may want to check out the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, or the Institute of Contemporary Art before heading back to DC.

Where to stay: Graduate Richmond

Carolina Coast: Washington DC to Wilmington, NC

If you are ready to escape the city for the coast, it is time for a road trip down to Wilmington , North Carolina and Wrightsville Beach. The six-hour drive is long but then there is plenty to do on the Carolina coast once you arrive and this road trip gives you a chance to figure out your favorite beach.

Emerald Isle, NC: Emerald Isle is on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, or the “southern” Outer Banks. This area attracts visitors who have returned for decades for the simple beach pleasures of a family vacation. Emerald Isle offers 12 miles of pristine shoreline and incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Inlet. Spend a few days enjoying watersports, fishing, or simply sitting on the sand and enjoying the sound of the waves rolling in.

Where to stay: Inn at Pine Knoll Shores , Islander Hotel & Resort

Surf City, NC: stay a couple of days in Surf City, the center of Topsail Island. The relaxing and uncrowded beaches are what some call “the way the beach used to be.” You can also enjoy kayaking, fishing, and boating on the Intercoastal.

Wrightsville Beach, NC: once you have arrived in Wrightsville Beach set up your home base for the next few days to explore. You will want to spend some time in the historic downtown of Wilmington, take a food tour in Kure Beach, stroll the grounds of Airlie Gardens, take a hike in Carolina State Park, or enjoy some beach time. Don’t miss a stop at Britt’s Donuts — the best on the east coast!

Low Country: Raleigh, NC to Savannah, GA

You can make the drive from Raleigh to Savannah in about five hours, but it pays to take the coastal route and make some stops along the way.

Myrtle Beach, SC : how long you spend in Myrtle Beach depends on the vibe of a beach town that you enjoy. If you enjoy a boardwalk, arcades, family attractions, and plenty of kitsch — then you will enjoy a classic family vacation to Myrtle Beach. But you can also get away from the crowds by kayaking through the salt marshes, strolling through Brookgreen Gardens, or paddle boarding.

Where to stay: Island Vista

Charleston, SC: for a complete change of pace, spend a night or two in the historic city of Charleston. Start off with a carriage tour through the downtown, visit some of the historic homes and gardens, and discover why Charleston is a foodie destination.

Where to stay: The Mills House Wyndham Grand

Beaufort, SC: spend a day exploring Beaufort, the upcoming-and-coming “next” Charleston or Savannah. Explore its antebellum mansions and downtown historic district. You can also enjoy the low country marshlands and waterways.

Where to stay: Anchorage 1770 Inn

Savannah, GA: finish up this east coast road trip in Savannah. Wander through the city’s many squares lined with oaks dripping in Spanish moss in Savannah’s historic district . Check out the Prohibition Museum, and then enjoy Savannah’s vibrant dining and craft cocktail scene. Stroll down touristy river street, take a ghost tour, visit some of the historic homes, or spend a day out on the beach at Tybee Island. Blue Ridge Mountains: Charlotte, NC to Gatlinburg, TN

If lakes and mountains are calling you, head towards the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park — with a few stops along the way.

Lake Lure, NC: the backdrop to Dirty Dancing, Lake Lure is a favorite family vacation destination. You will need a couple of days to explore Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, Chimney Rock State Park, and Chimney Rock Village which has plenty of shops and dining options, along with a scenic riverwalk next to the creek that kids will enjoy playing in on a warm sunny day. Plus you have to leave time to enjoy the lake, by boat or beach.

Asheville, NC: located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville has many fun things to do with kids . Take the Blue Ridge Highway to Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, and other hiking trails. Swing from the treetops at the Adventure Center of Asheville, play some games at the Asheville Pinball Museum, visit the Biltmore Estate , one of the most popular things to do in North Carolina , or sample some local craft brews. If you have more time to road trip, be sure to explore these Blue Ridge Parkway stops .

Gatlinburg, NC: use Gatlinburg as your base for exploring parts of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (don’t miss Cades Cove Loop ) and Pigeon Forge as well. You can go hiking, bike through the park, spend a day at Dollywood, go zip lining, see the view from Clingmans Dome, go horseback riding, or see a show.

Coastal Islands: Wilmington, NC to Jacksonville, FL

Another coastal road trip, this one bypasses the cities in favor of luxury beach destinations and brings you from Wilmington, NC all the way down to Jacksonville, Florida. A 6.5-hour drive by highway, you can spend a week or more exploring the coast. This trip brings you to some of the best beaches in the USA .

Kiawah Island: start off your road trip in luxury at the Kiawah Resort. This private residential island and resort is famous for its acclaimed golf course, but families can also enjoy 5-Star accommodations and 10 miles of private sandy shoreline.

Hilton Head Island: spend a couple of days enjoying the beaches of Hilton Head Island. You can also golf, take a guided dolphin or kayak tour, or enjoy some low-country cuisine. You won’t find tacky souvenir shops or neon signs. HHI has a quieter, more relaxed way of life.

Where to stay: Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort

Amelia Island: finish this luxe road trip at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Relax and enjoy the resort, search for shark teeth, star gaze from the beach, go shopping in downtown Fernandina Beach, take a kayaking tour, or hop a ferry for a day trip to Cumberland Island to see the wild horses.

Civil Rights Trail: Atlanta, GA to Memphis, TN

It is a six-hour drive from Atlanta to Memphis, and I recommend turning it into a Civil Rights road trip .

Atlanta: starting off in Atlanta , if you haven’t already visited I would recommend spending a couple of days visiting some of the important Civil Rights sites including the Center for Civil and Human Rights and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Another fun way of exploring some history is through a food tour with Atlanta Food Walks.

Where to stay: Loews Atlanta Hotel

Montgomery, AL: plan on spending a full day in Montgomery visiting the Rosa Parks Museum, the Freedom Rides Museum, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which honors victims of lynchings. On your way to Birmingham, you can make a detour to Selma to walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and visit other Civil Rights sites.

Where to stay : Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa

Birmingham, AL: if you stop in Selma, you may want to plan on spending 2 nights in Birmingham so you don’t have to rush. Be sure to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park, and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Take some time to enjoy Birmingham’s up-and-coming neighborhoods and food scene too.

Where to stay: Westin Birmingham

Memphis, TN: it is easy to spend at least 3 days in Memphis , more if you want to do a day trip to Graceland. You will need a half-day to take in the sobering exhibits at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel (the place where MLK Jr. was assassinated.) Also visit Slave Haven, Sun Studios and STAX Museum of American Soul Museum. Just leave time to enjoy some great BBQ and soul food .

Golden Isles: Savannah, GA to St. Augustine, FL

This coastal road trip from Savannah to St. Augustine, Florida stops at many of Georgia’s Islands along the way.

Little St. Simons Island: spend a few days on this private island nature preserve with just 32 other guests and 7 miles of pristine beach to explore. Take advantage of twice-daily naturalist-led expeditions, kayak through the marshes to go bird watching, bike to the beach, or track some of the property’s resident armadillos.

Where to stay: Little St. Simons Resort

Jekyll Island: plan on spending at least 2-3 days on Jekyll Island, another of Georgia’s Golden Isles. You will want to visit Driftwood Beach, check out the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, picnic at South Dunes Beach Park, relax on one of the many Jekyll Island beaches or even enjoy a day at the waterpark.

St. Augustine, FL: finish your road trip with a visit to historic St. Augustine — the country’s oldest continuously occupied city. You can stay on the beach or in town but be sure to check out both. You can visit the Fountain of Youth, walk the ramparts at Castillo St. Marcos, take a trolley tour, take a food tour to discover some of the town’s best places to eat , take a ghost tour, climb a lighthouse, or explore these other fun things to do with kids .

Florida Coast: St. Augustine to Miami, FL

Driving the east coast of Florida from Jacksonville to Miami can be done in five hours, but why miss all the great beaches, history, and fun attractions on the way?

Jacksonville / St. Augustine: you can fly into Jacksonville or start off in St. Augustine. In addition to all the historic town of St. Augustine has to offer (see above), Jacksonville offers plenty for kids too with the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Museum of Science and History, Sweet Pete’s Candy Shop, TopGolf, and more.

Where to stay: The Lodge & Club at Ponte Vedra Beach

Cocoa Beach, FL: spend 2 to 3 days enjoying the area near Cocoa Beach, including a full day at Kennedy Space Center . You can also kayak past the giraffes at nearby Brevard Zoo in nearby Melbourne or learn to surf at Cocoa Beach, the East Coast surf capital.

Where to stay: Hampton Inn Cocoa Beach

Hollywood, FL: next you can stay a couple of nights in Hollywood, between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Enjoy strolling along the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, ArtsPark at Young Circle, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, and the Anne Kolb Nature Center, with mangrove trails and an aquarium.

Where to stay: Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort

Miami, FL: if you have had enough beach time, you can focus on Miami’s neighborhoods and cultural attractions including Wynwood Walls, Little Haiti, Little Havana, and the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Even plan a day trip to the Everglades for an alligator airboat tour! Of course, you can’t leave town without at least checking out Miami Beach.

Florida Keys: Miami to Key West, FL

Driving from Miami to Key West is a classic American road trip. The trip can take a good five hours, but you need to leave plenty of time depending on traffic. It gives you the time to get into “island mode.”

Key Largo: it is best to break up the trip by staying a few days in the upper keys, since every key has its own personality. From here you can explore most of what Key Largo and Islamorada have to offer including John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, snorkeling or other watersports at Robbie’s, or glass-bottom boat tours of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary.

Where to stay: Baker’s Cay Resort

Duck Key: Hawk’s Cay at Duck Key is a great spot for families to stop and relax for a few days, enjoying all the activities on this family-friendly resort.

Where to stay: Hawks Cay Resort

Key West: on your way to Key West , you will want to stop at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon and Bahia Honda State Park. Once in town, don’t miss out on the famous Sunset Celebration. You may also want to take a snorkel cruise or sunset catamaran. You can explore Key West’s vibrant food scene with a food tour — plus find out where to get the best Key Lime pie . Don’t forget to take a picture at the Southernmost Point.

Southwest Florida: Miami to Tampa, FL

Cross Alligator Alley from Miami to Southwest Florida to explore the beauty of the Paradise Coast. Each town has its own personality so you will want to do a little beach hopping on your way up Florida’s Gulf Coast .

Marco Island: the wide, white sand beaches of Marco Island will entice you to stay for a few days. On the way, you should stop at Everglades National Park and take one of the many airboat tours available. You may also enjoy a dolphin watch tour, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, parasailing, and even jet skiing. A nature walk in Big Cypress Nature Preserve will introduce you to the area’s plant and wildlife.

Captiva Island: shelling fans will find their paradise on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. With much of the islands kept as a nature preserve, you are bound to spot dolphins, manatees, and abundant birdlife.

Clearwater Beach: just west of Tampa, the sugar-soft white sand of Clearwater has long been recognized as one of the best beaches in the U.S. In addition to beach time and water sports, families enjoy visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. You can also explore the cultural attractions and family attractions of Tampa, including Busch Gardens, ZooTampa, the Museum of Science and Industry, and more.

Central Florida: Daytona to Clearwater, FL

The shortest road trip may be across Florida from Daytona Beach to Clearwater. Yet there is so much to do in Orlando and Central Florida that you can easily spend a week or more getting the best of all worlds from the beach to the theme park.

Orlando: before leaving Daytona Beach, make sure you spend a day at the Kennedy Space Center , especially if you are lucky enough to be around to launch day. Of course in Orlando you can spend weeks in Disney , Universal , Legoland , and SeaWorld, plus all the water parks like Volcano Bay and H2O Live. But there are so many off-the-beaten-path Orlando attractions too from kayaking through the wetlands to visiting nearby natural springs.

Clearwater Beach: before arriving in Clearwater Beach , you may want to hit up some of the attractions in Tampa, like Busch Gardens or ZooTampa. Then take time to relax on the sugar-soft white sand beaches of Clearwater. Take a pirate cruise, enjoy movies in the park, and visit Winter the Dolphin (famous from the movie A Dolphin’s Tale) and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Panhandle: Orlando, FL to Orange Beach, AL

When you are ready to escape Central Florida for the gorgeous beaches of the Panhandle, head north on this Florida road trip.

Tallahassee: the drive from Orlando to Tallahassee takes about 4 hours, but there are plenty of natural springs, like Crystal River or Rainbow Springs, to stop at along the way. Or, turn it into a college trip and visit the University of Florida in Gainesville. In Tallahassee, you will find trees lined with trees dripping in moss instead of the palm trees of South Florida. Kids will also enjoy the Tallahassee Museum, Challenger Learning Center, Mission San Luis, and the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab.

Destin: get ready for a few days of beach life in Destin on the Panhandle’s Emerald Coast. There are a ton of things to do with kids including the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, Indian Mound Museum, Big Kahuna’s water park, banana boat rides, parasailing, and more.

Orange Beach, AL: one of our favorite beaches, you can compare the Florida versus Alabama Gulf coast experience. Key West, Florida

One stunning East Coast destination to visit during a road trip is Key West in Florida. Here, guests can experience the various waterways and islands making up the Florida Keys, landing in one of the United States' premier vacation destinations. Key West is known for its lively entertainment scene, as well as stunning white sand beaches. Coming here on a road trip is one of the best ways to see the state, especially its southernmost point. Another interesting fact about Key West is that it lies roughly 90 miles from Cuba, so there is plenty of influence from that culture throughout the area.

The best time to see Key West, Florida, is in the spring and winter. During these times, the weather will be mild, offering an escape from the state's normally above-average heat.

Miami Beach, Florida

Not far from Key West lies the ever-loved Miami Beach. Here, visitors can drive across bridges connecting the main portions of the city to its famous South Beach, all within a few miles. A little further south, historic Boston should be high-up on any east coast road trip itinerary. As the capital and largest city in Massachusetts, Boston is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the US. New Haven, Connecticut

Down in Connecticut, New Haven makes an excellent stop on any east coast road trip. With a whopping 20% green or open space, New Haven is a wonderful mix of city and nature. It is also home to the renowned Yale University, and visitors can explore its beautiful campus or enjoy the programs, concerts, and events held at the university. New Haven also has several beautiful churches to explore. Just out of the city, Lighthouse Point Park has stunning coastal views.

Atlantic City, New Jersey

Another coastal city that has a very different vibe but is also an excellent stop on an east coast road trip is Atlantic City. This resort town is bursting with glitzy stage shows, world-class restaurants, and endless sandy beaches. It is widely known as the ‘Las Vegas of the East' because of its plethora of casinos and evening activities, but it is also a wonderful daytime destination with activities such as surfing and sailing. Atlantic City is a firm favorite for many east coasters, but it is definitely a love-it or hate-it kind of place; whichever it is, it’s worth the experience!

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Another resort town found along the east coast is Virginia Beach, found in southeastern Virginia. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it is the city with the world’s longest pleasure beach, which warrants a road trip stop all on its own! But, despite the name, there is more to Virginia Beach than just the beach. There is a multitude of museums and aquariums, parks, and amusement parks. Just out of the town itself is First Landing State Park, the most visited park in Virginia and one of the most important historical locations for the US, as it is where English colonists first landed back in 1607. As well as history, First Landing State Park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails, sandy beaches, bald cypress swamps, and peaceful lagoons to explore.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

For a very different beach experience, add Ocracoke Island to your east coast bucket list. The island is only accessible by air or water, and the most common way over is by the ferries that carry passengers from the mainland or from the northern island of Hatteras. Ocracoke Island is famous for its 16 miles of pristine, undeveloped beaches, which are often rated as some of the best in the country (even beating some in Florida, California, and Hawaii). The little village has places to try the local cuisine, and there are nature trails, the Ocracoke Lighthouse, and Springer’s Point Nature Preserve for visitors to enjoy if they can tear themselves from the spectacular coastline! For those wanting to extend this part of the trip, travel down more of the Outer Banks Islands before reaching Ocracoke.

Charleston, South Carolina

With its colorful antebellum buildings draped in Spanish moss, it is difficult not to fall in love with Charleston. Whilst not the capital city of South Carolina (that title goes to college-town Columbia ), Charleston is the biggest city in the state and is constantly ranked among the best cities in the US. History buffs will enjoy a visit to nearby Fort Sumter and the nearby historic plantations such as Magnolia Plantation or Drayton Hall. If you somehow tire yourself of this charming city, the beautiful beaches at Isle of Palms or Folly Beach are close to the city.

Savannah, Georgia

Along with Charleston, Savannah is another city that oozes southern charm with its cobblestone streets and Spanish-moss-laden oaks. Forsyth Park is a 30-acre green landscape right in downtown Savannah and is home to a huge fountain which is one of the most photographed spots in all of Savannah. The historic district of the city is one of the most beautiful and preserved in the US, but there are also lots of options for excellent shopping, dining, and nightlife throughout the city.

St Augustine, Florida

Further south of Savannah lies equally historic and beautiful St Augustine. It is America’s oldest city and has so much spectacular architecture for visitors to explore. Some examples are the Lightner Museum in the Hotel Alcazar lies in downtown St Augustine and is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the impressive Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. If you get tired of the colorful streets, there are also 42 miles of beaches around St Augustine for visitors to enjoy the Florida sunshine!

Jamestown, Virginia

Jamestown is the first permanent English (England and Scotland didn't unite to form 'British' until later) settlement in North America. It is a settlement with a huge amount of historical significance to the nation (although perhaps not as impactful as the Puritan settlement at Plymouth). Jamestown is the site that inspired the stories of Pocahontas (based on a true story) and, sort of, even the 2009 movie Avatar . Today visitors can see the reconstruction of the Jamestown settlement with reactors .

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Just a short drive from Jamestown is Colonial Williamsburg. Jamestown was always a troubled settlement and the capital of the colony of Virginia. But eventually, the colonial capital was moved to the better location of Williamsburg, and Jamestown was eventually abandoned. Today Colonial Williamsburg is the largest living museum in the USA and a must to see . Colonial Williamsburg has numerous activities and re-enactors. It offers a step back to Revolutionary Virginia.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks are stunning for numerous reasons. They are the ideal destination to go for a coastal beach escape while on the East Coast, with plenty of excellent beaches and sand dunes to discover. In addition, visitors can see where the Wright Brothers first flew in Kitty Hawk as well as see a wild horse population (mustangs don't only live out West) .

What East Coast trip would be complete without visiting the nation's capital? Washington, D.C., is always worth a visit, and there is plenty to see and explore. From the White House to the Washington Monument to the many Smithsonian Museums and much more. Washington, D.C., is a great destination for families, groups, and individuals alike. Key West, Florida

Key West Florida is one of the most beautiful beach towns on the USA’s East Coast.

It is the southernmost point of the continental US and is actually closer to Cuba than it is to Miami! 

If traveling by road, the journey down to it is very unique. Key West is an island, part of the Florida Keys archipelago. The islands are connected by the ‘Overseas Highway’.

The route particularly from  Marathon to Key West  is well worth driving.

Once you arrive, you’ll find so many fun things to do in Key West. From checking out the bars and restaurants on the colorful Duval Street, visiting Fort Zachary Taylor in the state park, and enjoying the Sunset Celebration which takes place every evening at Mallory Square.

Of course with Key West being a beach town, there are lots of opportunities to get out onto the water.

Consider taking a boat or scenic flight to the Dry Tortugas National Park (be sure to book as far in advance as you can!), going on a snorkeling trip to the only coral barrier reef in the US, or exploring the island by kayak or jet ski.

For hotels, the Ibis Bay Beach Resort is a great beachfront hotel. It has a free shuttle bus to and from downtown Key West.

Chincoteague, Virginia

One of the best East Coast beach towns (and one of the best places to visit in Virginia !) is the charming Chincoteague, Virginia.

Nestled on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, this beach town is a great mixture of beach, wildlife, history, and of course delicious food, and there are plenty of   things to do in Chincoteague  for any visitor.

Animal lovers should keep their eyes open for the famous Chincoteague ponies. These are wild ponies that roam throughout Assateague Island. You can try to spot them from your car, take a boat tour, or even go kayaking to get up close to them!

The island also has gorgeous beaches with calm water, so it’s a safe and fun place to spend a day with your family.

You can also go kayaking, biking, and birdwatching in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. There are lots of trails and waterways to explore.

The town itself has a very relaxed feel, which is perfect if you’re looking to get away from it all. You can enjoy some delicious seafood and browse the local shops.

Don’t forget to climb the historic Assateague Lighthouse for some amazing views of the island. It’s a real adventure, and the scenery is breathtaking.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly place to stay, the Best Western is a great option. They have a pool and it’s easy to get to the beach.

Chincoteague, Virginia has something for everyone. Whether you’re into outdoor activities, wildlife, or just relaxing by the coast, you’ll have an amazing time.

Clearwater Beach, Florida

Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Clearwater Beach is a fun southern beach town with plenty of things to do.

Clearwater Beach is known for its sand which is so soft that it is compared to sugar.

In honor of the comparison, the town even hosts the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival each spring, which includes sand sculptures as well as entertainment.

Unlike beach towns on the east coast of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico is usually calm and the perfect place to cool down on a hot day.

Entry to Clearwater Beach is via the causeway and the beach is split into north and south. In the middle is Pier 60 and the Clearwater Marina. The Marina has a few restaurants and it is where most local  boat tours  leave from.

Pier 60 also has a restaurant as well as a playground and entertainment at sunset.

Both the north side and the south side of Clearwater Beach are lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels. A large path is located on the south side for bicycles and walkers. Volleyball nets are available for those who want to play beach volleyball.

Many beach sports are available on Clearwater Beach including jet skiing, parasailing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Fishing can be done off the pier or on a fishing boat charter which can be found at the marina.

While Clearwater Beach is walkable, the Jolley Trolley is a public bus that runs through the main street of the beach and also takes visitors to nearby towns.

Ocracoke, North Carolina

Ocracoke is a historic island town located on the southern tip of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The town is located on Ocracoke Island, a 16-mile-long barrier island on the North Carolina coast. The area is well known for stunning beaches and  amazing outdoor adventures . 

Unlike many of the other towns of the Outer Banks, Ocracoke has maintained its simple charm and natural beauty.

The quiet lanes in town are shrouded with huge live oaks covered in Spanish moss, the boutique shops and cafes are designed for you to linger, and freshly caught seafood is the star of local restaurants.

Ocracoke is the perfect base to explore Cape Hatteras National Seashore which protects most of the island. Rent a bike or a kayak to explore the roads or waters of the island, or hike in the maritime forests near the beach to see hundreds of birds.

Beachcombing and camping on the beaches are popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

A visit to Ocracoke Lighthouse is a must. It’s the second oldest lighthouse in North Carolina and is still in use today to protect the boats on the Atlantic Ocean.

Ocracoke Island is reached by ferry. Four ferry companies bring people and cars to visit the natural beauty of Ocracoke.

Naples, Florida

The beach vacation stomping grounds of my childhood (and those of a few generations worth of family members before me), Atlantic Beach, NC is a fantastic East Coast beach destination for travelers looking for a laid-back, family-friendly escape.

Located along one of North Carolina’s many barrier islands, Atlantic Beach is known for its sandy beaches, wonderful dining options (heavy on seafood, of course!), and as the home of Fort Macon State Park .

Touring the fort (which features amazing views from its trails, beaches, and structure), relaxing on the beach, and enjoying classic coastal pastimes like fishing all rank among the best things to do in Atlantic Beach.

No trip here would be complete without taking day trips to all the many nearby destinations, though, including the charming small town of Beaufort and the gorgeous lighthouse at Cape Lookout National Seashore .

As part of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, Atlantic Beach offers an under-the-radar alternative to the more famous Outer Banks towns located to the north, and makes for an unforgettable coastal escape on the east coast!

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is one of the most underrated beach towns on the US East Coast. Located on the Atlantic shore of South Carolina, it’s an excellent stop on an  East Coast USA road trip .

Myrtle Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere compared to nearby coastal cities like Charleston or Savannah and is the perfect place to relax on the sand, stroll along the boardwalk, and explore local boutiques.

One of the top attractions in Myrtle Beach is Broadway at the Beach . This entertainment complex is packed with shops, restaurants, and activities, including an aquarium, mini-golf, and a family-friendly amusement park.

Another must-do activity is a boat tour on the Atlantic Ocean. Opt for a dolphin sightseeing cruise during the day or enjoy a sunset cruise in the evening.

While Myrtle Beach might not be known as a foodie destination, there are certainly some great dining spots. Banditos Cantina is a great option. Their Tex-Mex cuisine is delicious, and the ocean views are hard to beat.

Regarding accommodation, it’s best to stay near the beach, preferably in hotels with nice pool areas. The Ocean Enclave by Hilton is an excellent choice!

Destin, Florida

Destin, Florida is a wonderful beach getaway on the East Coast. The perfect spot for all types of travelers, there’s so much to do in Destin as a family, a couple, or on your own.

Spending at least a day or two on one of Destin’s best beaches is a must when visiting this oasis.

Whether you’re looking for a laid-back experience at Henderson Beach State Park or a fun-loving time at Crab Island, there’s a beach in Destin with just the right vibe for you.

With some of the most clear water around, snorkeling is a top activity in these parts.

Located along the Cape Fear River, the port city is known as the gateway to the Cape Fear coast, home to beautiful beaches like Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach.   

Both beaches are great for collecting seashells, basking in the sun, or learning to surf.

Aside from the beaches, one of the  best things to do in Wilmington for families  is to go on a carnivorous plant hike at Carolina Beach State Park. The area immediately surrounding Wilmington is the only place in the world where the carnivorous Venus Flytrap grows natively.

You can join a park ranger on a hike and learn about the fascinating plants and the subtropical wetland environment in which they grow.

Within the city of just over 120,000 residents, you will also enjoy walking along the riverfront boardwalk, dining and shopping in the well-preserved Downtown Wilmington area, and touring the Battleship North Carolina – a World War II combat ship that is now a museum.

Fernandina Beach, Florida

Located on beautiful Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach is the northernmost city on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

With over 13 miles of sandy white beaches, this is one of the best beach towns in the country!

Besides spending your days relaxing on the beach, Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island have tons of history you can explore.

The Amelia Island Museum of History is a great place to start for an overview of the island’s history from its Native American roots to its Victorian-era residents.

You can also visit the Marine Welcome Center and Shrimping Museum to learn how Fernandina Beach became the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry.

Be sure to also head over to the A.L. Lewis Museum to learn about American Beach, an African American resort community established in the 1930s.

In downtown Fernandina Beach, you’ll find local shops and restaurants housed in historic buildings (there are over 400 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places).

In Old Town Fernandina, you can see the Pippi Longstocking House from the 1988 movie  The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking .

And, with an Amelia River Cruise, you can see the island with a whole new marine perspective with a ride along the Amelia River, Cumberland Sound, and Cumberland River.

Cape May, New Jersey is one of the best East Coast beach towns to visit this summer. Considered “The Nation’s Oldest Seashore Resort,” Cape May is located at the southernmost tip along the Jersey Shore and is ranked as a National Historic Landmark.

Congress Hall is the best place to stay during a  Cape May weekend escape . It’s known as “America’s First Seaside Resort,” and opened in 1816. Congress Hall overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and offers luxury accommodations, a pool, renowned dining, and easy access to the Washington Street Mall.

During a vacation to Cape May, NJ, you must enjoy the beautiful white sand beaches; go wine tasting at Cape May Winery & Vineyard; go shopping along the Washington Street Mall, in the heart of the city; visit the Cape May Lighthouse; enjoy an afternoon at Beach Plum Farms for a farm-to-table lunch and to shop for seasonal goods; and ride the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to Lewes, Delaware.

In addition to all of the fun activities to enjoy in Cape May, this coastal Jersey Shore gem also boasts incredible restaurants.

The top places to eat in Cape May are Peter Shield’s Inn & Restaurant, which faces the ocean and offers fine dining, and Washington Inn & Wine Bar, a fine dining restaurant in the heart of town.  

For more casual options, look no further than The Mad Batter Restaurant & Bar, which is an American restaurant surrounded by some of Cape May’s most beautiful Victorian homes; Tisha’s, an American restaurant located in the Washington Street Mall; and Taco Caballito Tequileria, which is a beachfront Mexican restaurant.

Montauk, New York

Montauk is a gorgeous beach town located at the end of the south peninsula of  Long Island, New York . 

New Yorkers often travel here for a welcome escape from the chaos and noise of the city – and who could blame them? With its warming atmosphere and very friendly locals, it has become a popular place to visit.

The fishing and surfing culture is a huge aspect here, so if either piques your interest, Montauk is the spot for you. However, if you’re not a fishing or surfing fan, don’t worry; there are a bunch of other activities to enjoy. 

Montauk is known for having six state parks, which means there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and biking. You can even book a guided hiking tour and be taken directly to all of the hidden gems and locations with the best views.

You also can’t miss the Montauk Lighthouse! Furthermore, just getting out on the water in Montauk is always amazing.

After you have worked up an appetite, head to the famous Lobster Roll Restaurant for a selection of seafood dishes.

Then, finish the evening watching the sunset at one of the popular beaches. Gin Beach is one of the best! 

As far as where to stay, there are plenty of oceanfront resorts to choose from. Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , in particular, is a beautiful resort with incredible food and even better views.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Located on the southern coast of Delaware, Rehoboth Beach is a beautiful, vibrant coastal town.

It’s the perfect beach destination for anyone in the Mid-Atlantic region to drive to, but you can also catch flights in and out of Salsbury, MD, or Wilmington, DE.

Both are small airports that offer a variety of flight options throughout the east coast!

Rehoboth Beach is a great beach town for all types of travelers. It is extremely family-friendly, so if you have kids this should be your go-to.

The town is well-known for its boardwalk, just steps from the sand. There is so much to do on the  Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk  that you never have to leave all week! 

Plan to grab acai bowls for breakfast at Playa Bowls. Walk down Rehoboth Avenue to shop at Penny Lane or grab a bucket of caramel corn at Snyders. Grab pizza for lunch at Grottos or bring a picnic lunch to the beach.

After spending an hour or two at Funland with the kids in the evening, sit down for dinner at Nalu for amazing Pacific Island cuisine, or Salt Air for fresh seafood!

Be sure to rent bikes one day and spend it exploring the rest of this stunning beach town. Ride around Silver Lake, admire the million-dollar beach homes throughout town, and pick up the famous sticky buns from The Point.

Long Beach, New York

On Long Island’s southwestern shore, Long Beach, New York, is one of the best East Coast beach towns—especially for those looking for a local, less touristy feel.

Located just a short train ride from  New York City , the “City by the Sea” offers a wide, clean coastline with soft sand, a 2.2-mile-long boardwalk, and a quiet, laid-back atmosphere. 

In addition to quintessential beach activities, Long Beach offers surprisingly excellent surfing. Long Island is a barrier island, ideal for beginners and experienced surfers alike. There are dozens of places along the beach to rent boards or take lessons, and you’ll find several designated surfing beaches.

As the sun sets, Long Beach’s nightlife comes alive, with tons of bars and hot restaurants to explore. On Beech Street, you can hop from one spot to another all night.

No matter where you land, don’t leave town without trying Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices, widely regarded as some of the best on Long Island. 

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, all visitors need a daily or seasonal  beach pass .

If you take the train from NYC, you can also purchase the LIRR  Get-A-Way Package , which includes round-trip train fare, a discounted beach fee, and free Long Beach Bus service around town.

Marblehead, Massachusetts

Marblehead, Massachusetts is a historic beach town located just a short drive from Boston that sits on a peninsula encircled by beaches.

A much more peaceful setting than the tourist hub of neighboring Salem, Marblehead is full of historic homes dating back to the 17 th  century and even has connections to the area’s infamous witch trials of 1692.

With Marblehead’s existence dating back to the beginnings of Massachusetts, a walk through the Old Town neighborhood’s maze of streets will show you some of the earliest houses in the United States.

For instance, the 1663 Ambrose Gale House is the oldest in Marblehead, once being the home of witch trials accusers Ambrose and Charity Gale.

Dive further into Marblehead’s history by visiting Fort Sewall, which dates back to 1644 and once protected the USS Constitution as it was fleeing two British frigates during the War of 1812. Be sure to also tour the 18 th -century Jeremiah Lee Mansion, which is built in the Georgian style and retains much of its original wallpaper.

While  exploring Marblehead, MA , be sure to stop into The Muffin Shop to try the town’s iconic Joe Frogger cookies. The legend of this molasses cookie dates back to the nation’s earliest days, when these treats were baked for fishermen heading out for several days on the water due to their long shelf life.

Ogunquit, Maine

Whether you’re simply searching for a fun beach town on the east coast where you can dig your toes in the sand or are looking for an excellent  stop when driving to Acadia National Park , you cannot miss the lovely coastal town of Ogunquit.

Though Maine is likely not the first destination to spring to mind when planning a beach holiday, Ogunquit – located on the southern coast – boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in the state and is filled with family-friendly activities.

While the gorgeous white sand beach is certainly a highlight of this town, Ogunquit does have more to offer.

The town center is packed with cute shops, there are plenty of activities like mini-golf for visitors to enjoy and, of course, there are some iconic Maine lighthouses to take in. 

Within the town itself, you can head to the charming Lobster Point Lighthouse and, about 10 minutes south, there is the beautiful Nubble Lighthouse in Cape Neddick.

And if the weather isn’t behaving for a day at the beach, there are also a handful of museums to visit, including the Ogunquit Heritage Museum and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

Located on the farthest tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown, Massachusetts is an idyllic New England beach town.

With a lively town center, gorgeous homes lining its streets, and a wonderful food scene, travelers visiting Cape Cod flock to Provincetown every summer, whether they’re staying in town or driving in for the day from further up the Cape.

Historically, Provincetown is famous for two very different things: for being the site of the Mayflower’s first landing, and for being an LGBTQ+ and artistic enclave.

Whether your interest in Provincetown’s history leans toward its 17th-century roots, its much more recent status as a hub for LGBTQ+ life, or both, the town has plenty to offer.

While you’re there, be sure to stroll down the vibrant Commercial Street (ideally both during the day and at night!), check out the soaring Pilgrim Monument that stands above the town, sample some of the many delicious restaurants (we loved our meal at Mistralino Ristorante ), and of course, enjoy the beaches.

And, of course, no trip to the Cape is complete without enjoying one of the most classic New England coastal activities: whale watching!

Block Island (New Shoreham), Rhode Island

Block Island is a hidden gem off the coast of Rhode Island and one of the most enchanting beach towns on the East Coast. Hop on a ferry from Pt. Judith and escape to a laid-back summer retreat.

Start your visit with one of the best things to do on Block Island : touring the small island by bike or moped, which you can rent in town. You’ll enjoy stunning landscapes and plenty of beaches where you can stop and take a rest.

A walk to the North Light at the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge is a must, providing an opportunity to see some seals or other wildlife in the coastal wetlands.

Adventure seekers can embark on a SUP or kayaking excursion in the Great Salt Pond, while those seeking relaxation can sit in Adirondack chairs sipping a Mudslide at the Oar, a popular waterfront spot. If you’re hungry, they have great seafood too.

For breathtaking panoramic views, hike up the Mohegan Bluffs, a scenic vantage point overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Mansion Beach is the best sandy spot to catch some rays.

To stay overnight, the Block Island Beach House , where comfort meets coastal charm, will make an unforgettable getaway.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket is one of the two  New England islands  sitting off the coast of Cape Cod, and it’s one of the best East Coast beach towns to visit if you’re looking for a stunning coastline, postcard-worthy scenery, and old-world charm.

Stepping foot onto Nantucket feels both like an escape from reality, and going back in time, making this an awesome bucket list destination in New England .

With about 80 miles of shoreline and more than 10 beaches to explore, spending a day or two at the ocean is one of the top things to do when visiting.

Beaches are accessible from all over the island, making them easy to visit! Some of the best ones to check out are Steps Beach, Madaket, Surfside, and Sconset.

When you’re not at the beach, strolling through the charming downtown is an absolute must. This area of the island is lined with cobblestone streets and is packed with independent boutiques and historic homes

Brant Point Lighthouse is also walkable from downtown, and this is one of the most iconic sites to see on Nantucket.

It’s also a great idea to rent a bike and head out to Sconset, which is a beautiful village home to rose-covered cottages, Sankaty Head Lighthouse, and the amazing Bluff Walk path that offers incredible views of the ocean and coastline. 

Nantucket is accessible by ferry and airplane, but most people get to the island by ferry, via Cape Cod.

For a luxurious stay, the White Elephant Hotel is worth the splurge, especially their beautiful cottages, which are just a short distance from both Brant Point Lighthouse and the town center.

With its pleasantly warm weather and thinned crowds, May is the perfect time to take a trip before the expensive summer season. Considering sights, weather, traveler sentiment and annual events (among other factors), U.S. News rounded up the best places to visit in May. Whether you're looking for an outdoor adventure in a national park, a quick Memorial Day getaway or a leisurely beach vacation , you can't go wrong with these destinations. Bryce Canyon National Park

When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.
