How to End Travel Content With a Bang: From Smart Callbacks to Shock Reveals

In travel content writing, endings matter. They are the last words the audience will read and, when done well, they have a tendency to linger. Great closing lines leave the reader with remnants of feelings and images, keeping the content alive in their minds long after they finish reading. A memorable ending is an asset to all forms of written travel content, whether you are penning a travel article or blog, a travel guide intro or even travel web page copy.

In a previous blog for World Words , we looked at the best ways to start your content. This time, we are turning our attention to the equally important conclusion. It may come last, but your ending should never be an afterthought…

travel ending words

Travel writing endings need not only to notify readers that the content is coming to end, but also to reinforce the main points of what has come before. The chronological end to your experience is usually not the best choice (for a first-person article, embarking on a return flight does not make a good finale); you will need to come up with something better. Anyone who regularly reads travel content in print or online will be aware that the quote has become a standard way of wrapping things up, but that’s just one of the ways to neatly parcel up your content.

Here are three other travel writing techniques that can help spice up your finale.

1. Reinforce your point with a memorable fact, a detail or an image The ending should reinforce what has gone before and reiterate the central point of your travel article, yet you shouldn’t just repeat what you’ve already said. Instead, try using a memorable image, fact or anecdote that helps summarise and demonstrate all that has gone before it, while simultaneously hammering home the main point.

In this Wall Street Journal article on climbing Sri Pada in Sri Lanka, Henry Wismayer ends by conjuring up a striking image of grandfather and grandson — one that continues to resonate after reading: “The bell was still tolling as I headed back down the stairs. Rounding the first corner was the man from Galle, a grandson at each arm. Together they stood and breathed in the dawn.”

David Sedaris employs a similar trick in this  ‘Journey Into the Night’  essay for the New Yorker. Having told the story of a first-class passenger crying over the death of his mother, he wraps it up by accentuating a memorable situation: “Here we were: two grown men in roomy seats, each blubbering in his own élite puddle of light.”

And when it comes to other forms of travel content, this technique works just as well. Lonely Planet use it in some of their destination overviews, such as this one on  Vietnam , which ends with the following memorable image: “Vietnam’s allure is easy to appreciate (and something of a history lesson) as ancient, labyrinthine trading quarters of still-thriving craft industries are juxtaposed with grand colonial mansions from the French era, all overseen from the skybars of 21st-century glass-and-steel highrises”

Here at World Words, we have also used this method when creating copy for our Ibiza travel guide for Oliver’s Travels . After emphasising how Ibiza is more than just a clubbing capital, we finished up with an image of the island that emphasises its non-nightlife related appeals, saying “Unfrequented coves and pine-carpeted hills explain its heady hippie-era allure, while its medieval citadel and rural one-horse hamlets recall its rich Mediterranean history.”

Shock-ed

2. End with a lesson, a discovery or a revelation What have you learnt? Has your travelling experience given you any new insight? Has it changed the way you view something or the way you think about it? If so, tell your audience and save it for the end. These discoveries are the things readers want to know.

For example, in this travel piece on Fukuoka, Japan ,  Pultizer Prize-winning author Junot Díaz finishes up by telling us what he has learnt about yatai (Japanese food stalls that serve home-style cooking): “Sit in a yatai, shoulder to shoulder with locals and, yes, with tourists, and what you will hear, smell, taste, and participate in will be nothing less and nothing more than the simple magic from which nations like ours are born.”

Writer Danielle Henderson also uses this technique in this article on Macau for Afar magazine, which ends: “Back in my hotel room, I thought about my relationship with Macau, a misfit traveler trying to cobble together an authentic experience in a city that keeps a poker face, and how the closed culture had guided me into quiet, reflective moments you rarely get when you travel. That, I thought, as I packed my bags and munched on another order of French fries, is a gift.”

Alternatively, you can end with a revelation. It can be shocking, surprising, humorous or amusing. In this chucklesome travel piece from Vice , the writer makes sure the final words of the article won’t be quickly forgotten. They read: “Although, if you are really looking for a reason to leave an angry comment, I did eat a dog in Vietnam like three weeks later.”

This technique can also work wonders on web copy and online destination guides. We used it in our Hong Kong mini-guide for HomeAway , when we wrapped up our copy by saying: “Sometimes the journey itself is part of the Hong Kong experience, something you’ll realise as you take a 125-year-old tram up Victoria Peak and peer down at the city far below.”

Shock-ed

3. Callbacks: Return to the opening Another useful travel writing trick is to tie your ending to the opening. Return to the story you began with — a nice, neat circular narrative. In this article for The Telegraph, Patrick Symmes goes searching for the mythical kingdom of Shambhala in central Asia. He opens with “I won’t tell you where it is,” goes on to describe his lengthy quest to find the elusive and fabled paradise, then concludes with this gem: “I tell you, I was there.”

Ingrid K. Williams also uses this method in this recent Frugal Traveler article for the New York Times, where she opens with the following: “White truffles from Alba and red wine from Barolo are not usually part of the frugal traveler’s diet.” She then goes on to describe her frugal food travels around Piedmont and concludes by circling back to that opening sentence:

“In our kitchen that evening, Dave uncorked a bottle that I’d purchased at Il Bacco: a barbera d’Alba from G.D. Vajra, another small producer that Eric Asimov had recommended. It wasn’t Barolo, but it was delicious to drink while preparing dinner: thin, ribbonlike egg pasta called tajarin that we buttered and topped with generous shavings of our white truffle. Surrounded by the wonderful aroma of truffles, we sat down to an indulgent meal that, before exploring Piedmont, this frugal traveler never imagined she could afford.”

This is another trick we’ve used at World Words. This article we wrote for Luxe Magazine begins: “Back in the 1960s, Búzios was just a backwater village when French starlet Brigitte Bardot rocked into town…” After extolling the virtues of Búzios’ beaches and dining, the article returns to Ms. Bardot. “Tamer late-night activities include a stroll down the Orla Bardot promenade, where Búzios’ celebrity fan, Brigitte Bardot, is cast in solid bronze with her gaze fixed out toward the sea. Camera-toting tourists line up to pose with Bardot, and a few are struck with an irrational twinge of jealousy. And who could blame them? After all, she gets to stay here indefinitely.”

This tactic also works for other travel content, such as web copy. When writing Off the Map Travels ’ homepage, we opted for a circular structure, opening with the line, “There is no fixed definition of a ‘traveler’”, and closing with further emphasis on the company’s individualised approach. “Off-the-beaten-path destinations, one-of-a-kind experiences and second-to-none support: we supply everything you require for a unique, unforgettable vacation.”

So next time you’re fretting about how best to structure your travel content, try using the above techniques (for the ending) and these helpful tips from our previous blog (for the beginning). We’re afraid the middle’s up to you!

Do you have any other secrets for writing a captivating conclusion? We’d love to hear them. Share them with us on Twitter . To see some of our travel writers’ own expertly-crafted endings, check out our latest projects .

Travel Words

Words related to travel.

Below is a massive list of travel words - that is, words related to travel. The top 4 are: journey , trip , adventure and tourism . You can get the definition(s) of a word in the list below by tapping the question-mark icon next to it. The words at the top of the list are the ones most associated with travel, and as you go down the relatedness becomes more slight. By default, the words are sorted by relevance/relatedness, but you can also get the most common travel terms by using the menu below, and there's also the option to sort the words alphabetically so you can get travel words starting with a particular letter. You can also filter the word list so it only shows words that are also related to another word of your choosing. So for example, you could enter "journey" and click "filter", and it'd give you words that are related to travel and journey.

You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words' direct semantic similarity to travel, then there's probably no need for this.

There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related , or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of travel in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with travel - you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it's the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a travel vocabulary list, or just a general travel word list for whatever purpose, but it's not necessarily going to be useful if you're looking for words that mean the same thing as travel (though it still might be handy for that).

If you're looking for names related to travel (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren't all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with travel, then it's obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with travel.

If you don't find what you're looking for in the list below, or if there's some sort of bug and it's not displaying travel related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site - I hope it is useful to you! 🐋

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

Trump slurs words and struggles to gain crowd enthusiasm in Midwest rallies

On a day off from his criminal trial, trump decried biden's “infrastrucker, ershure para,” in a bout of confusion, by griffin eckstein.

Donald Trump took to Michigan and Wisconsin on his day off from court, Wednesday, to rally his supporters and whine about his legal woes. His incoherent speech, along with inflammatory claims on abortion and pro-Palestinian student demonstration, took the spotlight.

Slurring his words at a Waukesha, Wisconsin rally, Trump referred to Biden’s “fake infrastrucker, ershure para,” before settling on “a package of infrastructure.” Minutes later, the 77-year-old launched into a rant about Master Lock, again slipping into incoherence .

The speech was just another instance of his public slips, which have led to speculation on his mental fitness. Tuesday night, he seemed to scramble his words to an indecipherable point while speaking to Fox News about pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations.

In a moment of cognitive function, Trump managed to spew self-aggrandizing historical inaccuracies about the state of the nation when he left office.

“When I left, [the mortgage rate] was 2.7%. We had no inflation. Everything was so good,” Trump said to a crowd in Freeland, Michigan.

Mortgage rates and inflation were at lower points, but most likely due to historic job losses and lack of consumer confidence. In January 2021, when, per Trump, “everything was so good,” unemployment was double its current figure and 95,000 Americans lost their lives to COVID-19.

Trump went on to peddle false election conspiracies, including that he won the election, after dodging questions in a Time interview earlier this week about whether he’d resort to political violence if he lost.

"They said that if I got the 63 million that I got the first time, which we won, that there was no way I could lose. I got millions and millions of more votes than that, and they nipped us,” Trump said . “We're not letting that bulls**t happen again."

The former president, who appointed three Supreme Court justices responsible for Roe v. Wade’s overturn, addressed the deeply unpopular ruling.

“Democrats, Republicans, everybody wanted to get abortion out of the federal government. Everybody wanted that,” he said, before thanking the conservative justices “for the wisdom and the courage” to gut abortion protections.

Trump, who said that “people are absolutely thrilled” with abortion rights being left to the states, falsely  accused Democrats of allowing late-term abortions at eight and nine months and “execution after birth.”

To crowds in Wisconsin, Trump applauded the New York Police Department’s crackdown on protests at Columbia University and the City College of New York late Tuesday night, calling the raids “a beautiful thing to watch.”

“New York was under siege last night,” he said of student demonstrators. "To every college president, I say remove the encampments immediately. Vanquish the radicals and take back our campuses for all of the normal students."

The defendant in a New York criminal hush money trial took the soapbox as an opportunity to lambast proceedings in his criminal trial, as well as previous judgments in a defamation case won by E. Jean Carroll.

“Every one of these fake cases is bulls**t, every single one,” Trump told the crowd, who reportedly became hushed as he ranted about his legal woes. Per Trump, “great legal experts,” including Sean Hannity and Mark Levin, believed there was no case.

“I have a crooked judge, he’s a totally conflicted judge. And [the jury] is in about a 95 percent Democrat area,” Trump said of Judge Merchan , taking care not to mention witnesses in the case.

He went on to criticize the $91 million dollar judgment incurred on him for repeatedly defaming Carroll.

“They said I defamed her. Because I said her story isn’t true, I defamed her,” he said. “Hopefully the appeal process works because, if it doesn’t, you just don’t have a country.”

Trump is due back in court Thursday morning for a hearing on further violations of his gag order, after Merchan warned that he may have to turn to jail time.

Annie Potts Says CBS' Decision to Cancel Young Sheldon Is a 'Stupid Business Move,' Says Cast Was 'Totally Ambushed'

'Young Sheldon' is ending on May 16 after seven seasons

Amanda Edwards/FilmMagic

Annie Potts wasn't ready to say goodbye to Young Sheldon .

In a recent interview with Variety , the TV legend said she and the cast felt "totally ambushed" by CBS' decision to end the hit comedy after seven seasons.

"If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming," Potts, 71, said of the show's cancellation. "We were totally ambushed by this. I was, anyway."

Potts' costar Iain Armitage , who plays the titular young Sheldon Cooper, added that he wasn't entirely ready to say goodbye to the series either.

Pamela Littky/CBS via Getty

"I totally get what Annie means," Armitage, 15, said. "It’s also just hard in a really weird way that I can only really see if I step back and try and take a global view ... I definitely think we could have done a lot more."

Potts also called the cancellation "such a stupid business move," citing not only its continued ratings success but its popularity on Netflix and TikTok.

PEOPLE has reached out to CBS for comment.

Young Sheldon is the prequel to CBS' The Big Bang Theory , which signed off in 2019. The series chronicles Sheldon's time growing up in Texas before moving to California to attend grad school at the age of 14. Given the character is 14 in season 7, the time felt right for the show to come to an end, according to executive producer Steve Holland.

In February, he told Deadline and other outlets that The Big Bang Theory timeline played a role in the decision for the prequel to end with its seventh season.

"There are certain things we know happen in Sheldon’s life at 14,” Holland said. “We started talking about the future of show, and what it looked like. This is the right time for this story to come to an end, knowing that at 14, he goes off to Cal Tech. It felt like the right time to end it strong while it was on top.”

Still, for Potts, who plays Sheldon's grandmother, Meemaw, the show's ending is bittersweet in no small part because she's loved watching her young costars — Armitage and Raegan Revord, 16, who plays Sheldon's twin sister Missy — grow up.

Bill Inoshita/CBS via Getty

During an interview with PEOPLE in February, Potts became emotional while talking about saying goodbye to the young cast .

“I'm going to cry right now,” she said. “I love the children, and it's been a privilege to watch them grow up. [Iain is] so grown up, and when we started, he and Reagan would get on my lap and kiss me and play with my fingernails and my ears. They were tiny, and all day long, they just say, he would say — and they still do — ‘I love you. I love you, Miss Annie.’ "

While Young Sheldon is ending, The Big Bang Theory universe is poised to continue with a spinoff centered on Sheldon's big brother Georgie ( Montana Jordan ) and his wife Mandy ( Emily Osment ).

Young Sheldon 's series finale will air May 16 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Fact Check: TikToker Was Supposedly Threatened by Disney World Cast Member After Refusing To Stop Filming Broken Ride. Here's the Truth

A video shows a Walt Disney World guest filming the Carousel of Progress ride malfunctioning and being told to "report to a cast member after the ride ends."

Fake ( About this rating? )

On April 9, 2024, TikTok user Shane Barton (@danddisney) posted a video recorded on the Carousel of Progress ride, apparently at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The video's caption read, "Disney ride malfunctioned and they got mad at me for filming at the end." It has since received over 1.7 million likes and more than 13 million views.

At the end of the video , the voice of a Disney cast member can purportedly be heard announcing over a loudspeaker on the ride, "And to the man filming in the black jacket, please find a cast member at the end of the performance."

On April 11 – two days after the TikTok video was posted – the Disney fan blog Inside the Magic published an article with the headline, "TikToker Threatened by Cast Member After Refusing To Stop Filming at Disney World."

However, the truth regarding the video was revealed on April 14 when Barton posted a second, explanatory "storytime" video on his TikTok channel.

"A lot of people are wondering what happened after I got caught filming the Carousel of Progress malfunction, so I figured I would do a proper part two storytime," Barton said. "Spoilers: Things have gotten worse now that I've posted the video.

"If you haven't seen the original, basically, I filmed a Carousel of Progress malfunction even after a cast member instructed us to put our phones down. And like you just heard, I was asked to find a cast member at the end of the ride."

Then, Barton revealed, "I did not try to find a cast member at the end of the performance because there was no malfunction. As many people already realized, I faked the video by editing the audio with my own voice."

He continued with further jokes, adding, "But Disney is not happy about this. Disney has now threatened to revoke my pass or even ban me from the parks if I don't pivot to genuine content. So I've started a new series called 'D and Disney' where I roll dice to see what I'll do at the parks that day. So please watch that so I don't get sued. Even though I won't, because I lied about that part. I love lying."

In other words, the audio in the video had been altered for a gag.

In fact, Barton previously uploaded a video with the same visuals but without his added vocals of being called out over the loudspeaker.

We reached out to Barton to ask about his thoughts regarding the success of his video and will update this story if we receive a response.

Resorts World’s Carversteak.

While some might argue that the best way to get to know a place as sensory saturated as Las Vegas is to get out and explore, to truly experience this city, from the Strip to downtown and from the westside to Boulder City, is to taste it.

When Wolfgang Puck’s Spago — imported from Los Angeles — opened its doors in 1992, it ushered in a celebrity-chef-driven restaurant migration to the Strip. From that moment, Las Vegas’ luxury dining scene has been a continually evolving world that’s only expanding into a wider playing field.

Beyond offering delicious dupes of renowned restaurants from coast to coast, all within a four-mile stretch around the Las Vegas Valley, the area brightly shines with an up-and-coming local dining scene, innovative takes on culinary trends and exceptional places to try different types of cuisines in varying styles.

These are the best new restaurants in Las Vegas.

Trump media stock djt at risk of a new short selling plunge, ryan garcia what s ostarine and how could a boxer use it to cheat.

The recently opened Fontainebleau features top restaurants from coast to coast, and the pinnacle comes from Hollywood with chef Evan Funke’s Mother Wolf . Martin Brudnizki designed the opulent Roman temple dedicated to the dishes of the Italian capital.

When you dine here, start with polpette di coda (oxtail meatballs). Their dense, rich, crisp texture is a surprising departure from the traditional. Move on to the Roman-style, wafer-thin woodfired pizzas, which come in eight different styles such as diavola (spicy salami), quattro formaggi (four cheese), Calabrese and funghi (mushroom). Next is the dedicated pasta Romana course, with carbonara, all’amatriciana, alla gricia (cheese and the guanciale), al burro (butter and Parmesan) and arrabbiata filing out of the open kitchen, rapid fire.

Funke aims to tell authentic stories with his food and provide a sense of place and meaning to the people who dine in his restaurant. “It’s not just about the food, a great wine list or ambiance,” Funke said. “It’s the entire experience. I want to sweep people off their feet and put them into a different mindset and a different place.”

Durango Resort

After debuting in December 2023, southwest Las Vegas’ Durango Resort has quickly become adored by locals and visitors alike as the place to dine off the Strip.

The new resort’s parent company, Station Casinos , is known for its popular steakhouses around town. The new jewel is Nicco’s Prime Cuts & Fresh Meats from chefs and Nobu alumni Frankie Gorriceta and Daniel Ye. Nicco’s prides itself on high-quality beef and presents a tableside grilled wagyu flight with Hokkaido snow wagyu, true Kobe and the rare A5 olive wagyu. Additional bragging rights go to the open kitchen, luminous selenite bar and 4,000-bottle wine cellar.

Peter Luger Steak House at Caesars Palace

New York City dining institution Peter Luger makes its way to Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. Revel in Luger’s legendary dry-aged porterhouse steak for one, two, three or four. If you are lucky enough, you might be given a tour of the impressive dry-aging room deep in the resort’s basement.

Only available midday, the burger and the steak sandwich might have enough pull to make the three-martini lunch a thing again.

Safta 1964’s delightful dips.

Exploring International Cuisines

Mother Wolf’s close neighbor at Fontainebleau, Chyna Club, from Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Hakkasan Las Vegas creator Alan Yau, serves Cantonese cuisine and dim sum in a setting with the allure of a private residence in Hong Kong .

In a city that does Peking duck well, this restaurant serves one of the best, carved tableside and presented the traditional way with featherlight pancakes, steamed buns and sweet bean sauce with thinly sliced cucumbers and scallions. Fresh lobster Cantonese and drunken king crab are the yang to the yin of delicately folded Sichuan dumplings. Yau’s classics, such as jasmine tea short ribs, scallop shumai, crispy duck salad and club carbonara, are also found on the menu.

Safta 1964 by Alon Shaya

Innovating on the pop-up restaurant trend and playing off the city’s popular music residencies, New Orleans -based chef Alon Shaya (whose eateries include Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans ’ Miss River) kicks off a culinary residency with Safta 1964. Taking over Four-Star Wynn Las Vegas ’ Jardin restaurant by night to create a playful prequel to his Denver-based Mediterranean restaurant, Safta (“grandmother” in Hebrew) is inspired by the chef’s matriarchal figure riding around town in her ’64 Thunderbird and throwing elaborate dinner parties.

What kinds of things served at those social gatherings can you expect at Safta 1964? Salatim (dips, spreads and vegetables) and freshly milled wheat pita start the evening. Shaya makes hummus six different ways, from classic tahini and lamb ragu to warmed buttered black summer truffles and blue crab with Ossetra caviar. The duck matzo ball soup and harissa-roasted chicken steal the show. And in the ultimate throwback, there’s a tableside Jell-O service.

French dining sensation LPM has made its way to Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas with Côte d’Azur charm and a spectacular look onto the Strip. This eatery’s French Riviera-inspired food is unique compared to other Las Vegas bistros. Warm prawns with olive oil and lemon juice are simple and perfect. On the more decadent side, the roasted chicken comes with foie gras, rigatoni and truffles. The cocktail menu is inspired by the French artist Jean Cocteau and is even accompanied by drawings and poems. The piquant Tomatini (tomatoes, white balsamic, honey and pepper) is LPM’s don’t-miss cocktail. You’ve never tasted savory goodness like it before.

With locations in New York City, Miami and Tel Aviv, celebrated Israeli chef Eyal Shani and Shahar Segal’s HaSalon found a natural fit in Las Vegas. The part nightclub/part restaurant at the Four-Star Palazzo at the Venetian Resort is culinary theater at its finest. Expect a celebration of the Mediterranean’s fresh ingredients in creative iterations and dishes that have velocity, literally. The Terrifying Hammer, for example, features herbs and flowers smashed atop thin slices of beef carpaccio.

There are two nightly seatings. The first makes the food the star of the show in a more tranquil environment. The second transitions from calm to wild with thumping music and napkin waving as the wine flows. The evening menu features a disclaimer about standing on the serving counters, tables or bar stools. But if you dance, sing and drink in a reasonable manner, you’ll have a safe, satiated time.

Eat Your Heart Out Hall of Foods’ Fiorella.

Unique Settings

Eat Your Heart Out Hall of Foods

Also at Durango, Eat Your Heart Out Hall of Foods eschews the typical fast-food-style counters found at most trendy food halls, for bar and table seatings in intimate boutique restaurant spaces and fast-casual settings. One of these unique enclaves belongs to Fiorella from celebrated Philadelphia chef Marc Vetri, whose Vetri at Palms and Osteria Fiorella at Red Rock consistently rank among the top high-end restaurants in Vegas.

Fiorella is almost a replica of his Philly pasta bar with 40 seats, a brick facade, a red-painted front door, copper ceilings, wood paneling and Murano chandeliers. The menu’s nine different pastas share signature touches like brown-butter ricotta gnocchi, basil-almond pesto garganelli and lemon-poppy seed tagliolini. Everything is made in the open kitchen and best enjoyed at the chef’s counter.

Carversteak

Carversteak at Resorts World opened in 2021, but new for this season is a climate-controlled, 3,500-square-foot enclosed patio garden and bar. Dine alfresco year-round on executive chef Daniel Ontiveros’ Japanese, Australian and domestic wagyu steaks.

As one of the largest steakhouses in the city, it boasts one of the most diverse meat programs in the highly competitive field. The indoor-outdoor addition makes for a tremendous dining ambiance at one of the most Instagrammable restaurants in town. Check your social feed for pictures of the famed dining room portrait of Cookie Monster or the beloved Cookie Monster dessert trio if you have any doubts about the place’s popularity.

Off-Strip Deliciousness

Esther’s Kitchen

Esther’s Kitchen, a breakout star in the Arts District and a hero of the local Las Vegas dining scene since its 2018 debut, recently relocated to a next-door space (a 1940s-vintage corrugated steel and concrete building that previously housed the Retro Vegas vintage store) that’s three times the size. As a result, chef James Trees expanded the menu and hours to meet the demand for reservations. Now, there are pasta-making setups, wood-fired pizza stations, a private dining room and a wraparound bar.

Casa de Raku

The Spring Mountain corridor welcomes Casa de Raku, a traditional Spanish-European tapas and wine bar created by restaurateur Mitsuo Endo, of Raku fame. Open for dinner and late-night, the tapas bar is as authentic as you will find stateside, with products discovered on culinary expeditions to Madrid , San Sebastián, León and Segovia.

The Iberico katsu represents the best of both Japan and Spain as premium Spanish Iberico ham is prepared in a classically Asian style. These sophisticated snacks are best paired with a sample of Spanish wines.

Casa Don Quixote

For a real break from the Strip, head out about 30 minutes to the quaint enclave of Boulder City, where Eligio Gomez Morais has opened Casa Don Quixote. The restaurant courts the authentic flavors of Galicia, Spain, Morais’ home province, as well as Italy, France and Portugal. Dinner here feels like a warm hug disguised as a home-cooked meal of classics such as gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), pulpo a la Gallega (Galician-style octopus) and lomo de vaca a la plancha (grilled beef loin).

Bit in a Bar

Juliana Tringali Golden nips our worries in the bud.

Todd Barry, a comedian, performs stand-up in front of a brick wall.

WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — After being ground down by last week’s wickedly challenging Wednesday puzzle, I was bracing myself to receive a similar thrashing in Juliana Tringali Golden’s crossword. To my relief, Ms. Golden’s grid was comparatively uncomplicated, and the search for themed entries made me smile, rather than suffer.

This puzzle is also aptly themed for a certain holiday that many countries celebrate on May 1. Does that give you any scents of what to expect?

Today’s Theme

At 1A: The “Disney princess who sings ‘A Whole New World’” is JASMINE. At 8A, a “Basic yoga position” is LOTUS. These answers are two examples of WALLFLOWERS, a term that refers to “Shy sorts” and here describes “the answers on this puzzle’s perimeter.”

What’s the name of a flower that might appear at a “Rainbow’s end” (39D), for instance? VIOLET. How about one for an “East Egg resident in ‘The Great Gatsby’” (48D)? It wouldn’t be Jay or Nick, but DAISY. Most of these flower names are garden-variety (yuk, yuk), but you can reveal a couple of the trickier ones below.

67A. “Scented ingredient in some hand creams and shampoos”

15D. “‘The Black ___’ (1987 crime fiction best seller)”

Tricky Clues

16A. A business “Catering to the very wealthy” is described, appropriately, as UPMARKET .

19A. “La-di-da” is a teasing adjective for someone ARTY, and may be used to describe certain clientele at establishments of the kind 16A refers to.

26A. “Hollow center?” is a witty way of asking for the center of the word “hollow,” which is made up of two ELS.

49A. “Bit in a bar” is not referring to a mauling at a drinking establishment — oh, you didn’t think that? I didn’t either, then — but an OAT, often found in granola or protein bars.

1D. JAPANS, a verb meaning “Covers with a glossy black varnish,” is derived from an artistic technique attributed to a certain country (yes, that one ).

4D. The “Inventor who might be described as dotty or dashing?” may well have been handsome or eccentric. But the man in question, Samuel MORSE, of the namesake code, was known chiefly for dabbling in dots and dashes (or dits and dahs ).

Constructor Notes

Happy May Day! The inspiration for this puzzle was pretty simple: I love flowers. My father worked as a gardener before he retired, and when I was growing up he was always able to tell me the name of any flower I pointed out. To me, the names are nearly as beautiful as the flowers, and I wanted to fill a puzzle with them. I liked the idea of these flowers growing along the walls of the grid, and that led me to a fitting revealer. Maybe this will inspire someone to plant some flowers of their own.
