The Trek 930 Singletrack, a vintage mountain bike from the 1990s, stands out for its classic American craftsmanship and robust design. This particular model, with its 26\" wheels and a 20.5\" frame, is well-suited for riders who appreciate the blend of comfort and durability offered by traditional bike designs. Its current condition reflects a history of use but also care; it has no breaks or dents, yet it shows the expected signs of wear such as scuffs, scratches, and some light rust.

Functionally, the bike remains reliable. The gears and brakes are in working order, which is crucial for both safety and performance. The tires, although showing signs of age with flaking gumwalls, still have a decent lifespan left. However, the back tire does have a slow leak, indicating a need for either a new inner tube or a patch, a minor setback in the grand scheme of things.

The bike's handling characteristics are described as very solid, an attribute that many riders look for in a mountain bike. Its weight, around 29 pounds, is fairly standard for bikes of its era and build, providing a stable and grounded riding experience. The missing plastic bottom of one gear shifter, while noted, does not affect the bike's functionality, demonstrating the robustness of its design.

For potential buyers, the seller's commitment to proper packing and shipping is reassuring, especially with the offer to refund any difference if the shipping cost is less than anticipated. However, the note about higher shipping costs to California, Alaska, or Hawaii, and shipping only on Wednesdays are logistical considerations to keep in mind.

Old Trek 930 HELP!!!!

  • Add to quote

I just recently bought a old trek 930 singletrack with rock shox and I believe it's stock. From what I hear these are excellent bikes yet there age. I am just now getting into biking and am really looking to get addicted to riding and possibly buy a road bike and do several 1000 miles a year. But back to my real question, is there any upgrades I should do to this old bike to atleast make it up to par with the newer bikes out. Im a college student with not to much money but looking to tear up the parks and ride this bike for long distances. Can someone help me with any ideas. I'm a completely newb when it comes to biking and pretty much need to be spoon fed every bit of knowledge. Thanks so much for your guys time

should I purchase a new fork? should that be the first investment

trek mountain bike model 930

Nice cross-post. It's not worth spending much money on a bike that age. Compatibility problems tend to make any upgrades turn into a more complicated, expensive ordeal than you bargained for. Ride the hell out of it, and replace what breaks. If the fork is already broken, you'd probably do best just getting a rigid. Do you know what year it is? Can you give a model for the fork?

I am not exactly sure what year it is but it has a blue to purple fade with the rock shox, it has to be around 1996

should i purchase new bike rims or tires?

Probably not. Nicer tires can make a huge difference in how much fun a bike is off-road, but if the current ones aren't completely worn out, you might start by just doing some riding. Is anything actually wrong with what's on the bike? If nothing's actually broken and the brakes work, the only thing you should worry about upgrading for now is the engine. Does your school have a bike coop or something?

trek mountain bike model 930

Probably has a Rock Shox Quadra 5...not much you can do for this fork. Does it still move up and down? If not it may need to be serviced and some new elastomers . Here is a copy of the manual . Everything else I'd just replace as needed...if you really get serious about riding, save your money for a new rig and turn the old 930 into a single speed urban assault bike!

trek mountain bike model 930

I had this bike back in the day (still on a trainer in the basement) and it is most definitely the Quadra 5 or 21R. I think '96 was the year the Rock Shox Judy came out and it wasn’t compatible with the 930 leaving the Quadra the best alternative. I had the Quadra 21R on mine but it was not stock. Rebuild the shock and have fun. +1 on saving your money on any upgrades unless something breaks and buy something newer when you can afford it.

trek mountain bike model 930

If you want/need to replace your front fork, check on ebay for older threaded forks. There are several new old stock RockShox forks floating about right now as well as some cheap SRSuntour forks.

My rockshox on it right now are real stiff and barely move I really don't know if it is just old or needs readjustin, should I try to mess with it or just buy a new one?and how much are these old fronts, and what are the best forks for these bikes? Thanks again

trek mountain bike model 930

The best suspension fork for the 1994/1995/1996 Trek 930 would be something with 80mm of travel at most and a brake housing stop on the brace. A fork like this hasn't been made in 14 years, so you're kind of stuck with what you have. If you can understand the manual for the Quadra 10, it would be a good idea to inspect the elastomers and remove the lowers for lubrication and inspection.

trek mountain bike model 930

I am not sure where you are riding and how technical the trails your riding are but I still have one of these- I use it mostly to pull my kids in a trailer but do hit the trails with it sometimes as well- If your the kind of guy that will keep it and love it rather than leap for the next best thing there is nothing wrong with doing some minor updates - just don't dump a ton of cash in to it- then it is not worth it. I really like the frame and think it is a sleeper - ox chromo- rides pretty well for a hardtail- It is the kind of bike you can have some serious fun on (I had a totally pimped out Santa Cruz Blur LT with way too much cash tied up in it that just sat for a month until I sold it when I first over hauled the 930-) I would recommend going to a local bike shop and picking up a non threaded cast off rigid Fork, a cheap cane creek headset and a threadless stem- I picked one up locally for $15 - but ended up finding a steel surly and am running that now- Run a nice 2.3 or so tire to take the edge off and have fun... cheap fork= no performance gain- just some wallowing cushion... Also If you do plan on riding it off road a lot it is well worth going to V Brakes I still have all of the stock gear- 7 speed grip shifts and canti brakes Shimano STX stuff ... I think it is a 95' - mine came with a threaded rigid fork- here is a link with the specs: http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=1995&Brand=Trek&Model=930&Type=bike I have had it built ten different ways from full XTR 950 9 speed stuff to a current build of XT 750/XTR950 stuff - I recently scored a set of White Bros Ti Riser bars- not noodly but right heavy and great vibration/jolt damping- I might have some old stuff laying around that can get you rolling for cheap if your interested

^^^^^^ I always loved that frame color! I love the old Trek 9xx frames! They ride great and the geometry doesn't screw things up for me at all because I'm slow lol. I have a 80mm Skareb up front on my 970. I know folks say that older bikes aren't worth upgrading but for me, at least, it's worth every penny. I love the frames, can afford to upgrade vs buy a new one right now, and find no compatibility issues with today's components except discs. I've had a 930, 950, 970 and 990....still have the 970 and 990 frames and really want do something special/crazy with them as a project. I would have no problem using them as my main ride......wait, one of them is! I'm selling my 9.8 and 6 series and transfering the parts. Unless you need disc brakes at this time ride that thing!

frame is awsome haddiling

brakes grip shifts

great hardtail reliable fun handles great forgiving great for a weekend warrior if your riding at a place like whitface youd want more suspension but i made it down fine.

The frame held up to trips down flights of stairs in Central Park and around NYC as well as many hard falls in the woods and racing. Althought the stock post was stuck in the frame it held up, I bent and Onza post in a crash.

BB( put in wrong by the shop), seatpost frozen in the frame, wheels gave up after 2 years.

The bike is gone, it was stolen. It was a great frame to build up on for a beginning racer. If you see it you should know what to do...

A very good bike, whith Hi-Tech Shimano Shifters, It gives me great pleasure every time I ride the bike. It is responsive, the brakes are extremely powerful.

The Bottom Line is the Trek 930 is a brilliant bike, and It rides like it cost twice as much as it did.

I have owned many bikes, and ridden many friends bikes, but nothing can beat the 930 for Riding Pleasure

The bike is strong, light and has great components. It also has good handaling.

The stock brakes lose power in wet conditions. It also could use bar ends.

Great bike for the money and not to many problems.

Pacific rockstomper and Trek 800 Sport.

Frame is SOOOOO solid. Has held up for 2 years now and not one complaint with the frame.

Stock brakes and stock stem were really really weak.

This is a great bike! The frams has held up to 2 years of me abusing it and it has performed wonderfully. The stock equipment are a bit weak. The breaks should be switched out if you buy one with stock still on em. Also, the cheapy stem flexed A LOT, and I'm only 175!!! Anyway, I love steel frames, they have a bit of give in em, so my rump is not as sore as my friends who ride hardtail alums. The only thing I would warn about is if you are a very heavy rider 230+. The frame will go from giving to flexing a lot, and ya don't want that!

Awesome frame!!! Stock components are O.K.

Stock components are O.K. Shock is a bit weak, although it's held up well for a beginner shock.

I rode this bike hard for a couple of years (It's a 1998) and now it's been relegated to commuter after uprgrading to f/s moko moko... but I can honestly say that I've never seen a frame hold up so well!!! I still ride around and do stair drops and other small stunts and I never get a creak out of the frame... the stock parts will melt off and break if you go big but the frame never complains. I'm thinking about throwing a rigid fork, riser bar, and bash ring on it to make it a nice little trials bike cause I know I can depend on the frame for the drops.

Trek Mountain Track

Cro-Moly frame triple-butted (I don't know what is it but believe this is goood (reason I bought this bike)), rear der-r,good rims(Bontr-Maverick),tires not so bad, price (it was leftover, of course)

Front der-r, crank (both Alivio), a little bit heavy, brakes could be better

I going to spend some money on this bike because it worth it. Really nice frame (which is not in production anymore:-( This bike deserves to lose some weight. I'm not a professional but I believe if I'll change derailleurs, crank, seatpost, fork, cassette(8 to 9),brake set it will be very decent bike.

Giant Boulder(no comments), Tassajara, 6000

1)Frame, 2)drive train, and 3)rims have taken a lot of abuse over the past 1600 miles and held up without having any problems.

1)Front shock (Rock Shox Indy C): is a basic front shock but does not provide any damping and very little shock absorption over large bumps. I have recently upgraded to the 2000 Judy XC. Next year I will submit a review for the Judy XC. 2) The bike came equiped with clip and strap type pedals. I have recently upgraded to Time Atac clipless pedals which are one of the best upgrades I have made. 3) Saddle. I do use this bike for 30 mile road workouts now and then. I have recently upgraded the saddle which has eleviated a "discomfort" problem.

1)This review is for the 1998 Trek 930 2)Upgrades were done as a result of component breakage from various spectacular crashes. 3)After riding the 930 for 1600 miles, through mud, sand, streams, and on fire roads, steep climbs, crazy downhill runs and on paved roads I can still say I love this bike. It is not the most expensive bike nor does it have the most expensive components. But as a bike it takes abuse without breakdowns, enables technical riding, it is comfortable to ride, and has a reasonable price tag. 4)The type of person who should buy this bike would be a beginner. However, when the beginner develops into an intermediate level rider, just a few components need to be upgraded to have a real nice bike.

This (1998 Trek 930) is my first mountain bike.

Great frame for the money! Steel gives you a great ride.

The increased chain angles caused by the 9-speed drivetrain seem to cause a problem or two - e.g. the chain sometimes rubs the front derailleur. (Of course, many other bikes besides the 930 now have 9-speed drivetrains.) I'm starting to wonder if 9-speed stuff is kinda like disc brakes: overkill.

Like I said, the 930 frame is a great frame for the money. Unfortunately, Trek no longer makes it (but the tubing was made by True Temper, who still makes steel). I didn't like some of the stuff that came on the stock bike (but it's still a great bike for $650) so I put different stuff on it(see above). I've been very happy with it. It's pretty lightweight for steel - the way mine's set up it weighs just over 26 lbs.(19.5" frame). I wanted steel and thought about getting an Independent Fabrication - they're great frames but way expensive. I don't race (yet!) so it didn't seem worth it to me to get an IF. (You IF riders are saying "WHAT?!" Were you asleep when you rode that IF?!) Just one man's humble opinion.

Independent Fabrication

Frame is Awsome ,simply bullet proof, worthy of upgrading. Mine is a '94 model with Tripple Butted Chromolly tubing. Massive and stiff chain stays (for chromolly) really transmit power well. Nice component package. Great climber that is reasonably light. Great Value.

Rigid forks were too rigid. Shord wheelbase transmitted many hard hits. A tad heavy for racing compared to today's bikes.

When I bought the bike back in '94 it was only $450.00! It was a GREAT ENTRY LEVEL Mt. Bike. Had a great frame that was worth upgrading. It came with STX 7-speed and looks that could kill (Ice Violet fade to Green). The forks back then weren't much so I baught it with a rigid fork. I have since upgraded to full LX - 8-speed, added risers, clipless pedals, and a Judy XC. This bike has stood the test of time! It's simply a great package, so great that I still have it even though I recently bought a new Y2K Trek 7000. If I can get half the life out of my new ride, I'll be happy. I'll never sell my old 930, it's simply too good a bike! Too bad that Trek dropped it from their line this year. I'd strongly recommend this bike to any cross country rider. If you can get your hands on one, go for it!
