10 Full-Size Liquids You Can Actually Take Through Airport Security

By Rachel Chang

Vector illustration of a detailed airplane on the urban airport scene. Retro style.

For the better part of two decades, we’ve limited the liquids we carry through airport security. The magic number settled upon was 3.4 ounces, or 100 milliliters, of liquid in a container—an amount that became an  international standard developed by explosives experts .

As frequent travelers are well aware, bottles that are 3.4 ounces or less can be stashed into a single one-quart plastic bag, and each traveler is allowed one—in a rule that’s been dubbed the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Oversized liquids can still be packed, but need to go into checked-in baggage.

But as screening devices have become more savvy, there has been talk of those limits being eliminated, especially as a  recent report said the UK will scrap the rules by 2024. “The introduction of new technologies has played a significant role in how aviation security has evolved over the past 20 years, thanks to strong industry partnerships and TSA’s agility in adopting technology that enhances security and improves the passenger experience,” a TSA spokesperson says. While there’s no timeline in place yet, the agency “anticipates the limit on liquids will be lifted in the coming years.”

So in the short run, travelers still need to limit the fluids they pack in carry-ons. But, as with all rules, there are exceptions. “TSA requires additional screening to ensure the safety of these liquids,” the spokesperson says of the items. “Travelers in this group should notify security of their medically-necessary liquids.”

In general, those  exceptions need to pass a three-prong test . They need to be required during the duration of your flight or at your destination, they can’t be available at the airport in the area past security, and they can’t be available at the destination. But when it comes down to it, the  TSA says on its site , “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”

Here are some of the most common exceptions of oversized liquids that can be taken through security.

Prescription liquids, creams, and gels

Medication that has been prescribed specifically for you is perhaps the most common item that qualifies as an exception. TSA recommends that it’s clearly labeled so there's no question about what is inside. “You are responsible for displaying, handling, and repacking the medication when screening is required,” the agency’s site dictates. Depending on the situation, medication can either be screened visually or with an x-ray machine. It may also be tested for traces of explosives.

In some situations where the officers aren’t able to properly screen the item, you may be asked to open the container and transfer it to an empty container to test, or possibly dispose of a small quantity.

In cases where you would like to make sure the medication isn’t opened or X-rayed, simply inform the TSA officer. “Additional steps will be taken to clear the liquid and you will undergo additional screening procedures to include a pat-down and screening of other carry-on property,” the site says.

Liquid medications and contact lens solution

In general,  liquid medications that are not prescriptions and  contact lens solutions are limited to 3.4 ounces, but TSA does allow “larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip,” with the caveat you must declare them to security officers first.

Breast milk and infant formula

Passengers traveling with infants have enough to worry about on their flights—and being able to provide the little ones with the proper nourishment should not be one of those concerns. Technically, TSA categorizes  breast milk and  baby formula as “medically necessary liquids.” The child doesn’t need to be present for the exception.

In order to expedite the process, TSA suggests—but doesn't require—that the liquids be transported in clear and translucent bottles, so that they can be screened by the Bottle Liquid Scanners. (Those in pouches may not be able to.) While there is a chance you may be asked to open them, nothing will ever be placed in the liquid. The agency also adds that the screening process shouldn't affect the formula, but if you prefer they not be x-rayed, alternative testing means can be taken.

Baby and toddler food and drinks

In addition to breast milk and formula, food and drinks for babies and toddlers are also allowed, including puree pouches. They also technically fall into the “medically necessary” category.  Water for babies is also allowed in “reasonable quantities.”

Liquid teethers

TSA also recognizes how important teethers are to babies and has “ liquid-filled teethers ” specifically called out as an item that can be brought through the security check.

Ice, gel, and freezer packs and other accessories to medically necessary items

Ice, gel , and freezer packs that are required to keep other medically necessary items in their required cool state are also exceptions, no matter what state they are in (solid ice or liquid gel). Additionally, IV bags or other accessories to medical supplies are also allowed.

Hand sanitizer

In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, one major allowance was added to the list— hand sanitizer . While they may be readily available beyond security check and at your destination, the hygiene item was added, especially for use on the plane, as some experts have said that extra precautions should be taken on airplanes and airports to prevent the spread of germs .

Until further notice, hand sanitizers of up to 12 ounces are allowed since “TSA understands that COVID-19 is at the forefront on the minds of travelers, as health officials are encouraging that individuals wash their hands frequently,” the  site says .

Live fish in water

Assuming your  live fish in water needs more than 3.4 ounces of water, this is another exception to the rule, as long as they’re in a clear transparent containers and properly inspected by the TSA officer.

Biological specimens

Liquid exceptions can be made in the name of science.  Non-infectious specimens in preservative solution can be carried through if it’s for scientific research. But they’ll need to be very specifically packed.

There can be up to 30 milliliters of free liquid in a heat-sealed inner plastic bag and then no more than one liter in the outer packaging, which needs to be marked: "Scientific research specimens, 49 CFR 173.4b applies." (Specific instructions for the regulation are  here .)

Duty-free purchased items in officially sealed bags

Shopping at the airport? Those liquid souvenirs can be taken home as well, as long as they are properly sealed by the cashier in a  security tamper-evident bag (STEB). The system was “developed to allow an exemption" to liquid volume rules for items purchased at duty-free airport retailers or on board an aircraft, according to the  International Civil Aviation Organization .

43 best travel-size toiletries and essentials to breeze through TSA

Ready to hit the skies and get flying to your next destination? Us, too!

Travel is picking up as winter getaways come to an end and spring draws near. But before you throw everything in your carry-on bag and call it a day, it’s important to know about TSA’s approved toiletries guidelines.

First, you are indeed allowed to bring toiletries in your carry-on bag and of course, in your checked luggage.

If you are bringing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams or paste in your carry-on bag, they must all be able to fit in a quart-sized bag, per the official TSA website . Each item must also be in a container that holds 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

The only way to get around the 3.4-ounce rule is to pack your goods in your checked luggage.

Aside from toiletries, lugging your accessories through the sky, such as your sunglasses and jewelry , can also come with a few stipulations. After all, it’s such a drag when your favorite necklace gets tangled with your adorable bracelet.

But never fear, as we’ve outlined the best travel-size toiletries, skincare, organizers, and more that put your mind (and TSA’s mind) at ease.

Everything You Need to Know About the TSA’s Liquid Limit

The tsa allows liquids under 3.4 ounces in your carry-on—but what’s considered a “liquid” isn’t always obvious..

Don’t forget to remove your liquids when going through TSA screening.

Whether you’re a carry-on-only kind of person or not , knowing the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) liquid limits is essential for anyone who travels by plane in the United States. Yet understanding which of your toiletries, foods, and other items even count as “liquid”—let alone how best to pack them—can get confusing. Use this guide to understand the TSA’s rules and restrictions about liquids, common exceptions, and tips to help ensure your next airport security screening goes smoothly.

What is the TSA liquid limit?

The TSA’s liquid limit for carry-ons—known as the 3-1-1 rule—allows travelers to pack liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes under 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) in their carry-on bags. Passengers are allowed up to one quart-sized bag per person , or roughly nine 3.4-ounce containers in a single quart-sized bag. Anything more will have to go in a checked bag or risk being tossed out.

If your liquids are stored in containers larger than 3.4 ounces, even if there’s only 3.4 ounces left inside the bottle, you can’t bring them through security.

Completely empty bottles, such as your reusable water bottle , are allowed through the TSA checkpoint since (spoiler alert!) they don’t contain any liquids at that moment.

Which toiletries TSA allows in your carry-on

The TSA allows all of the following common toiletries in your carry-on only in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less:

  • Shampoos and conditioners
  • Lotions and sunscreen
  • Gel hair products

In other words: yes, you can bring toothpaste, deodorant, and sunscreen through TSA checkpoints but only if they are in travel-sized containers.

Powders and powder-like substances, including baby powder and some makeup items, aren’t restricted in your carry-on bag. But if you’re carrying more than 12 ounces (350 milliliters) of a powder, you’ll need to place it in a separate bin for X-ray screening, and it may be subject to additional screening—so it’s a good idea to budget an extra few minutes at the security checkpoint if you think this might happen.

Tips for packing your toiletries in your carry-on

To comply with TSA regulations, invest in small, reusable toiletry bottles, like these capsules by Cadence.

Especially if you don’t have TSA PreCheck , it’s helpful to pack all of your toiletries in a quart-sized (or smaller) clear plastic toiletry bag for screening. Although improved airport technology means that far fewer air passengers (both in PreCheck and non-PreCheck lines) will have to take their liquids out out of their carry-on, it’s still helpful to have all of your liquids in one bag just in case you get pulled aside for additional screening. For an upgrade from that large Ziplock, we recommend the standard-sized Clarity Jetset Case from Truffle ($88), which has a clear window panel and is comparable in size to a quart-sized bag.

Since toothpaste is considered a liquid, paste, or gel by the TSA, most of us toss those tiny one-ounce tubes in our carry-on bags. However, if you want to ditch the hard-to-recycle packaging, consider toothpaste tablets, an ecofriendly alternative that’s not subject to the 3-1-1 rule. We like Humankind’s fluoride toothpaste tablets ($12), which resemble small mints and turn to paste when you crush them between your teeth. Matador has also recently released a reusable toothpaste tube ($10), which you can fill (and refill) with your regular toothpaste.

For travel toiletries that are easy to rebottle (like shampoo or body wash), consider investing in reusable bottles or containers so you can always keep your preferred brand on hand. Some of our favorite TSA-approved toiletry bottles include:

Buy Now: GoToob three-pack of 3.4-ounce bottles, $30, rei.com

These easy-to-fill, leakproof silicone tubes are ideal for shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and body washes. GoToob’s line comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from 1.7 to 6 ounces, and are easy to clean between refills.

Matador FlatPack

Buy Now: $13 for one or $35 for three, matadorup.com

Each three-ounce, TSA-approved bottle is made from a durable, waterproof, nylon-based fabric. Like GoToob, they’re leakproof and easy to fill, but thanks to their flexible, fabric-like design, they will shrink to their contents, taking up less space in your pack. >> Read the full review of the Matador FlatPack

Buy Now: $14 for one or $74 for six, keepyourcadence.com

The refillable travel containers by Cadence are small, leakproof “capsules” that click together with magnets. At 0.56 ounces, they’re best for makeup and toiletries you don’t need much of—like a weekend’s worth of shampoo or a week of that under eye cream you only need a dab of.

Foods are subject to liquid limits

The TSA’s 3-1-1 rule applies to food too, meaning you’ll need to make sure any foods that count as liquids, gels, or pastes (like yogurt, peanut butter, pâté, jams, or that tasty pimento cheese spread you tried to bring home from Charleston) are less than 3.4 ounces or packed in your checked bag. There are some exceptions, like frozen foods and juice for babies, and the TSA’s website is the best resource to check for specific items.

Exceptions to TSA’s liquids rule: Full-sized liquids that you can bring through security

The TSA has several important exemptions to its liquids rule. You’re allowed to bring full-sized bottles of the following:

Hand sanitizer: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the TSA currently allows travelers to bring up to 12 ounces of hand sanitizer in their carry-on bags. These will be screened separately.

Medication: You’re allowed to bring medically necessary liquids, aerosols, and gels through security. This also includes the ice or gel packs you may need to keep your medications cool. You are not required to store these items in a plastic, resealable bag, but you should remove them from your luggage and let the TSA officer know what you’ve packed.

Baby formula and breast milk: Like medication, you can bring freezer packs to keep these items cool, and you should remove them from your luggage and notify an agent when you go through security. More baby-related exceptions? Gel or liquid-filled teethers and canned or jarred baby food.

Of course, the final decision on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint rests with the TSA officer.

If you’re ever unsure about a specific item, the TSA’s website has a handy, searchable list of prohibited and allowed items worth checking before you travel. You can also now text the TSA with your questions.

There’s nothing worse than arriving excitedly at your destination to find that your toiletries have spilled all over your suitcase. Or to be the person who holds up the line at security while the TSA agents discard your oversized liquids. Both of these scenarios are easily avoided by investing in a set of appropriately sized, 100 percent leakproof travel toiletry bottles. There are lots of options out there in terms of bottle quantity, size, and design, with the right one for you depending on factors such as how long you’ll be traveling and the complexity of your beauty routine.

To help you narrow down the choices, our team of travel experts put 14 toiletry bottle sets to the test. Each one was scored for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value, with average scores used to determine the winners of categories ranging from “best budget” to “most durable.”

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, liquisnugs premium leak-proof silicone travel bottles.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

Very secure, with no leaks during testing

Stick to vertical surfaces

Easy to stay organized

Lack of variety

The LiquiSnugs Premium Silicone Travel Bottles offer flawless performance at a price so reasonable our tester was shocked by it. The set includes two 2-ounce bottles and two 3-ounce bottles, both of which adhere to TSA carry-on regulations. We liked the flexibility afforded by the two different sizes since there are always products we need more and less of on vacation. We were able to easily fit all four in a quart-sized Ziploc bag simultaneously without placing pressure on any of them. All bottles are made of flexible, food-grade, BPA-free silicone, making them easy to pack and dispense.

With a dripless valve and bottleneck design, the bottles are advertised as 100 percent leakproof—a claim we can support, with no spillages even after being dropped and thrown around repeatedly during testing. We liked that the bottles’ wide mouths made them simple to fill, empty, and clean as needed. Other highlights include the suction pad on the back of each bottle (great for attaching them to the bathroom wall) and the changeable labels. Options for the latter include shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, soap, and lotion, enabling you to switch up the uses on each trip.

Best Budget

Vitog travel bottles kit.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5

Multiple dispensing methods

Comes with several functional extras

Good value for money

Capacity could be larger

Retailing for half the price of our already affordable overall winner, the Vitog Travel Bottles Kit is a no-brainer for budget-conscious buyers. It includes six 1.4-ounce bottles and two 0.4-ounce bottles. The larger ones consist of two pump bottles with a removable clip to prevent accidental deployment, two spray bottles, and two flip-cap bottles. The smaller ones are miniature cream jars. All eight are made from clear PET plastic, which we found durable yet lightweight enough for travel. We also liked that we could easily see how much product was left.

We appreciated the thoughtful inclusion of a pipette, a funnel, and a spatula to help with decanting products from their original containers. They made the bottles relatively easy to fill, although we did experience some spillage when decanting thick body lotion. Nevertheless, there was no leaking or visible wear and tear after our intensive testing process. The set also includes a sheet of labels and a clear plastic toiletry bag. The only real drawback? None of the bottles are particularly big, making this option suitable for short trips only.

Cadence The Originals Set

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4 /5

Unique design

Performed well throughout testing

Customizable

More of an investment than others

Limited capacity

The Originals from Cadence are small, hexagonal capsules with screw-top lids that connect magnetically together in any shape or configuration you like. Aesthetics are at the forefront of this brand, as you can choose different colors for each capsule as well as printed, switchable, magnetic labels. In fact, they look so cute that you could even buy toiletries in bulk and decant them into these capsules for use at home. Sustainable practices like these are reinforced by the fact that the capsules are made from 20 percent recycled ocean-bound plastic.

We love that the capsules’ wide mouths and rounded interiors make them effortless to fill, use, and clean. They’re also 100 percent leakproof, waterproof, and airtight, as proven by our testing process. We found them incredibly durable and can’t imagine a scenario that would result in them being punctured or crushed. They are small (each one carries just 0.56 ounces), which could be a drawback. However, a capacity calculator on the brand website suggests you can carry approximately a week’s worth of products, depending on how regularly you use each one.

Most Durable

Mrsdry travel bottles.

  • Ease of Use 3.5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

Soft yet rugged silicone construction

Effective leakproofing

User friendly

No diversity in size or design

If your primary concern when packing liquids in your hand luggage is leaking, you’ll love the Mrsdry Travel Bottles Set. It consists of four 3-ounce bottles, each made of thick silicone that feels ultra-durable, and they stood up perfectly to our squeeze and drop tests. We were particularly impressed with the bottles’ no-drip valves, which successfully prevented leaks. All four bottles use the same shape and dispensing method—a pro for those who want lots of capacity for fewer products, and a drawback for those with a more complex personal care routine.

Having said that, we did feel that this set is so reasonably priced, there’s nothing to stop you from buying multiple sets if you have more products to pack. Instead of labels, the bottles come in four separate shades to distinguish between them. We also liked that their wide opening makes them easy to fill, even with thicker liquids and gels. And when it comes to cleaning them, the bendable silicone easily accommodates a bottle brush. All colorways include a transparent carry case.

Best Variety

Morfone 16 pack travel bottles.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Good array of containers

Burly silicone handles rough treatment

Jar lids are weaker than expected

Multicolored style may not suit everyone

The Morfone Travel Bottles Set caters to travelers with an extensive beauty routine. With 10 containers in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and dispensing methods, you can take a broad range of products in just the right quantities for your time away. Options are as follows: two 1-ounce spray bottles, two 3-ounce squeeze bottles, two 2-ounce squeeze bottles, two 1-ounce jars, and two 0.3-ounce jars. We were impressed by the capacity of the largest bottles, which we felt could easily hold at least four washes’ worth of shampoo and conditioner.

The bottles are made of durable yet flexible food-grade silicone, with wide mouths for easy filling and cleaning. We appreciated the inclusion of two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush to help with these tasks, as well as a sheet of labels. Most of the containers held up well to our durability tests with no leaks or spills. The only exception was one of the jars, which suffered a broken lid. The set comes in a transparent carry bag and could fit into a quart-sized Ziploc (a TSA requirement) with some skillful maneuvering, although it was tight.

Number of Bottles: 10 | Sizes: (2) 0.3-ounce, (4) 1-ounce, (2) 2-ounce, (2) 3-ounce | Materials: Silicone

Best for Larger Capacities

Insfit tsa carry-on approved containers.

Great value for money

Well-designed lids

Choice of cute color palettes

Can be finicky with certain products

The INSFIT set is ideal for those who like to keep things simple with only a handful of essential products but also tend to travel for longer and need as much capacity as TSA will allow. It features four identical 3-ounce silicone bottles large enough to hold at least one to two weeks’ worth of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and sunscreen (or similar). The bottles are squeezable, which makes dispensing simple, although we found that thicker lotions and gels were easier to squeeze if the bottle was at least half full.

Other highlights include fully removable caps and wide mouths for mess-free filling and easy cleaning, and three-layered lids that are essentially leakproof. Even during our pressure test, caps remained securely in place, and afterward, the bottles still looked brand new. In fact, we were shocked to find out how affordable this set is given its evident quality. We also liked the stylish, see-through carry bag and the fact that there’s a special place on the caps to stick the included labels so that they adhere properly.

Best for Backpacking

Matador flatpak toiletry bottle.

Ideal for reducing heft and bulk

Thoughtful design elements

Proved durable during our testing

Difficult to fill with thicker consistencies

Made of waterproof 30D Cordura ripstop nylon with proprietary welded construction, the Matador FlatPak Toiletry Bottles are by far the most technical option on this list. With their flat-pack design and sturdy quality, they’re designed especially for adventures and expeditions where saving on space and weight is a priority . With a capacity of 3 ounces each, they’re five times lighter and 3.5 times more compact than standard silicone bottles, and pliable enough to fit into tight spaces: the ultimate backpacking companion.

We found them easy to fill with any liquid that was the consistency of shampoo or thinner. Thicker gels and lotions were tricky since the mouth wasn’t as wide as that of standard travel bottles. Still, any mess is easy to clean off the waterproof exterior. They fit easily into a quart-sized Ziploc, and we love the snap hook for attaching to the outside of your backpack for on-the-go use. The loop also features a spot for writing a description of the contents with a permanent marker. As expected, the packs survived all our tests with zero leaks or signs of damage.

Number of Bottles: 3 | Sizes: (3) 3-ounce | Materials: 30D Cordura ripstop nylon

Our overall favorite was the LiquiSnugs Premium Travel Bottles set. These bottles stood out for their durable, leakproof silicone construction and thoughtful extras including adjustable labels and individual suction pads. For the most budget-friendly option, choose the small yet sturdily versatile Vitog Travel Bottles Kit .

Upon receiving the bottles, our first step was to examine their overall quality and design and note any unique features. Then, we filled at least three of the bottles in the set: one with lotion, one with micellar water, and one with shampoo. For each one, we noted how easy it was to fill without spilling, how easy it was to clean if spillage did occur, and how appropriate each bottle would be for holding different types of liquid. We also tested how easy it was to open the bottle and dispense the product inside.

Next, we compressed the bottles in our palms to mimic pressure. We shook them, rolled them, squeezed them, and threw them to stimulate rough handling in transit, noting how well they withstood this treatment. Our final test was to put all of the bottles from the set into a quart-sized Ziploc bag, and then inside a toiletry bag. Then, we dropped them from waist height three times, always from different angles, to see whether any breakages or leaks occurred and whether the bottles showed any signs of wear and tear.

Each set was scored on a scale of one to five for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value. Average scores were used to determine our category winners.

Other Travel Toiletry Bottles We Tested

GLOBEGEAR Travel Bottles : This nine-piece set features a solid range of containers and tools made of hard plastic that doesn't feel flimsy. We deducted points for the skimpy capacity of the bottles, which would only last a few days or applications (and made filling the bottles difficult), though the affordable price makes this a good option for the infrequent traveler.

Kitsch Travel Containers : Fans of variety will appreciate the range of products included in this compact kit. It won't set you back much and, accordingly, we feel it also won't last long. We like the idea of the flat containers but found them somewhat difficult to fill.

Cosywell Travel Containers : The Cosywell Containers are all the same shape in 10- and 20-milliliter capacities. We found the plastic and silicone jars easy to fill and well-designed, but they're more suited to thick liquids such as gels and creams.

What to Look For in Travel Toiletry Bottles

Durability is key when choosing travel toiletry bottles since containers that are easily punctured or cracked will result in a mess that’s at best inconvenient and at worst potentially expensive or upsetting depending on how much product is wasted and whether any other items in your carry-on are affected. Look for options made out of sturdy hard plastic or thick, flexible silicone, then check user reviews to get an idea of how the construction holds up under real-life travel conditions. If you’re planning an extreme adventure, technical options like the waterproof flat-pack bottles from Matador may be worth the extra expense.

Leakproofness

A bottle doesn’t have to break for leaks to occur—all it takes is a poorly constructed seal or lid. Look for bottles with a triple-layered leakproof cap and jars with a secure screw top. Pump bottles should come with a removable clip that prevents them from being deployed accidentally. Again, user reviews help check how efficient these measures are (it’s easy for a brand to advertise their product as leakproof, even if it’s not). Some brands, like Cadence, actually guarantee the efficacy of their leakproof design. Just in case, we always recommend storing toiletry bottles in a waterproof bag or Ziploc as a second line of defense.

If you plan on packing your toiletry bottles in your carry-on bag, you must make sure that none of them exceed the TSA-approved limit of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Some sets are made up of identical large bottles of around 3 ounces, giving you the maximum allowable capacity for each of your products. However, because all bottles must fit in a single quart-sized Ziploc bag, this limits the number of bottles to around four.

If you have more products to pack, you may prefer a set that divides this capacity between a greater number of smaller bottles and containers—especially if you only require some of your liquids in very small quantities. The length of your trip will also dictate how big you need your bottles to be unless you only plan on using your carry-on liquids as a backup in case the full-size versions in your checked luggage get delayed.

Toiletries can be stored in opaque, translucent, or transparent bottles of any color as long as each individual bottle does not exceed the maximum capacity limit. For carry-on bags, most authorities including TSA set that limit at 3.4 ounces. Liquids can be in their original container or decanted into any container of your choosing (even one that’s labeled incorrectly), as long as these size restrictions are adhered to.

Most airport authorities—including TSA—rule that bottles containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes cannot exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) if you wish to pack them in your carry-on luggage . In addition, all of these bottles must fit inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag and be screened separately from the rest of your luggage at security. Containers that exceed this limit will not be permitted, even if the volume of the product inside is less than 3.4 ounces (for example, if you have a half-used bottle of conditioner). Note that these restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.

Although toiletry bottles don’t have to be labeled from a legal perspective, many people like to do so to ensure they don’t end up brushing their teeth with expensive moisturizer, or vice versa. Some travel bottles come with waterproof stickers, especially for this purpose, and you can also purchase them separately online. This is a better option than writing on a standard office label by hand since toiletry bottles frequently get wet and ink can run and cause staining or become illegible. Alternatively, a permanent marker applied directly to the bottle could be an option if you’re always going to use the same container for the same product.

5 clear toiletry bags for travel that are TSA compliant

Caroline Tanner

Thanks to being a TSA PreCheck member for nearly a decade, I can't recall the last time a TSA agent asked me to remove my toiletry bag from my carry-on when passing through security. Not having to deal with rummaging through luggage to remove your toiletries (along with electronics) is just one of the many perks of TSA PreCheck, the expedited security program.

But unfortunately, PreCheck benefits do not extend internationally. In my experience, certain airports abroad, including London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) , are much stricter in enforcing the universal quart-sized toiletry bag rule. In fact, the last time I flew from Heathrow, a security agent actually made me empty my entire quart-sized bag, which admittedly had several of the mini-sized products from the hotel I had stayed at sticking out. (In my defense, the products in question were Le Labo from the London Edition in the West End.)

Even so, I stood there and watched him put every last item back into the two plastic bags he supplied. Although I was slightly irritated during this process, it was a good reminder to travel with a compliant toiletry bag and to not let the opportunity for free La Labo result in trying to cram nine bottles into your bag at the last minute.

When traveling in Europe, for example, passengers are restricted to a one-liter transparent plastic bag for their liquids, aerosols, drinks, toothpaste, creams, gels, etc., per the European Union . Domestically, you must put your liquids in a quart-sized bag (approximately 7 x 8 inches in size, though TSA does not specify measurement requirements), with each product less than 3.4 ounces, per the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule.

Even if you are traveling abroad, all travelers departing from the U.S. must adhere to the quart-sized bag rule, which is why we've compiled this guide with some of our favorite clear TSA-compliant toiletry bags.

TPG's favorite carry-on toiletry bags

Clear Toiletry Bag, Bagsmart 3 Pack , $11.99 at Amazon

tsa travel size toiletries

Since we love a deal here at TPG, let's start with one of the cheapest options on this list. Thanks to Bagsmart, you can purchase a three-pack of bags measuring 7.5 x 5.9 x 2.2 inches for just under $12.

"Bagsmart bags are inexpensive and have held up to my frequent use," says TPG family travel writer Tarah Chieffi, who also uses them abroad. "They are great for international travel when you often still have to remove your liquids from your luggage and put them through separately. And they come in a lot of fun colors so you can match them to your luggage."

Stasher Quart Bag, $19.99 at Stasher

tsa travel size toiletries

Another budget-friendly option comes to us from Stasher, which I can personally attest to as having high-quality yet affordable products — I've used the brand's Pocket Bag ($7.99) to hold my headphones when traveling. Thanks to the brand's range of reusable bags which meet any size needs, it has at least two options for TSA-friendly toiletry bags, such as the signature Quart Bag, measuring 8.75 x 7.5 inches.

"I started using them as my go-to toiletry bag because they're super durable, washable, see-through (so easy to find what you need inside) and they have a little stretch, which is great when you need to cram in just one or two extra things," TPG global features managing editor Melanie Lieberman told me.

She also likes the brand's stand-up bags, such as the Stand-Up Mini Bag ($17.99, 5.5 x 7.5 inches), whose flat bottoms allow the bags to stand up on their own, a feature that is hard to find.

The Clear Pouch Set , $45 at Away

tsa travel size toiletries

Away is known for its ubiquitous hardshell suitcases, including its top-rated carry-on, my personal favorite. Beyond suitcases, the brand has expanded into travel accessories, including its Clear Pouch Set, which in true Away style, features two TSA-approved bags, one large and one small, that are also spill-proof.

With a leather-like trim, these bags have a folded bottom that expands for extra room but still packs flat. The small one measures 7.3" x 0.8" x 4.3" inches with a 0.3 liter capacity, making it suitable for your liquids, while the larger one, at 8.66" x 0.8" x 5.3" inches with a 0.5 liter capacity, also meets TSA size requirements.

Plus, these bags fit seamlessly into the corresponding Away Toiletry Bag ( small and large versions are available online for $55 and $75, respectively) and — like all Away products — you can try this bag combo for free for 100 days and return at no cost if you are not satisfied. But based on my experience with Away products, you won't want to return it.

Small Clear Cosmetics Case , $75 at Cal Pak

tsa travel size toiletries

If you are concerned about see-through aesthetics yet still want to be able to carry on your liquids (which to be honest, I can relate to), consider the Mini Clear Cosmetics Case from Cal Pak for $75. At 8 x 4 x 6 inches, it still weighs less than a pound despite being more substantial than the other bags on this list.

"The Calpak Clear Cosmetic Case is large enough to hold all of your toiletries, but still small enough to fit in your luggage," says Tarah. "The separate compartments help you stay organized and because it's clear, it's easy to find what you are looking for."

With a range of classic colors (mauve, stone, caramel and black) and limited editions like the dragonfruit one currently available, this bag is sure to meet your style needs. It has a lay-flat carrying handle, a water-resistant lining and features two zippered compartments to effectively organize your items. And, it's covered by a one-year limited warranty.

If you ultimately need more space and decide to check a bag, Cal Pak also has a larger version of the Clear Cosmetics Case for $95.

Bottom line

Each of these toiletry bag options is TSA-compliant to meet the agency's 3-1-1 liquid rule and quart-size bag requirements, so you shouldn't have any issues using any of them, even if you are not a PreCheck member and have to remove it from your carry-on to go through TSA security.

Although you could technically use a plastic Ziploc quart bag, it's 2022, and we simply cannot be out there using single-use plastic every time we travel.

Remember that these are TPG's top choices for carry-on bags — TSA size requirements do not apply to checked bags. Be sure to stay tuned for our guide to the best larger toiletry bags.

What Is The TSA PreCheck Liquids Limit?

Last Updated on March 27, 2021

So you have TSA Pre Check stamped on your boarding pass, but what are the benefits when it comes to restrictions on toiletries?

Do the Transportation Security Administration let you bring more liquids if you are PreCheck approved. Let’s find out.

The Rules & Restrictions For TSA PreCheck Liquids In Carry On Luggage

Alas no. The TSA PreCheck liquids limit is not any different from the regular limit. The 3-1-1 rule still applies for passengers with Pre Check status.

Here’s the TSA on Twitter telling Katie the bad news…

Here’s the 3-1-1 liquids rule that still applies to TSA Pre Check passengers:

  • 3. You can bring liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are less than 3.4 ounces.
  • 1. You must pack all your containers in one quart-size bag.
  • 1. You are only allowed one quart-size toiletries bag per passenger.

The best way to deal with liquid restrictions is to only pack as much liquid as you need for your trip. For example, there is no sense in bringing 3.4 ounces of face cream when you need only half an ounce.

If you decant your liquids into travel size bottles you’ll be able to bring more of the fluids that you need. This set has various sizes so you can bring only the amount of fluid that you need for your journey.

tsa travel size toiletries

The other way to make space in your toiletries bag is to swap out liquid versions of products for solid versions. Solid toiletries don’t need to be packed in the quart-size bag.

For example don’t bring shower gel, bring a bar of soap . Swap your liquid shampoo for a solid bar of shampoo .

The same trick can be applied for sunscreen lotion and makeup . You can even buy TSA approved solid toothpaste pills!

Another way to make space in your plastic quart bag is to bring wet wipes instead of liquids. Wet wipes are not treated as a liquid and you can pack them anywhere you want.

The TSA PreCheck lane has its benefits, you don’t need to get your laptop out of your carry-on bag, you can keep your shoes and belt on and that’s great. But being able to bring extra liquids is not a benefit. The regular liquids rules apply.

When it comes to fluids, the only benefit of having TSA PRE stamped on your boarding card is that you don’t need to remove your toiletries bag from your carry-on when going through the x-ray screening process. That’s it! You don’t get to bring extra even though you are deemed to be a low-risk passenger.

Sometimes passengers will get bumped up to free PreCheck status and they don’t know they can keep their liquids in their suitcase.

If you want to annoy frequent flyers that have TSA Pre✓ then take your liquids out of your carry-on and place them in a bin. They hate seeing newbies in the PreCheck lane that don’t know the PreCheck rules.

Cesar thinks they should have another level of security clearance that lets passengers bring liquids unrestricted.

It’s a good idea, but at the moment such a class of passenger doesn’t exist.

There are few ways you can bring liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces on to a plane.

If you purchase drinks after airport security you can bring them on board. The liquids rule only applies to going through security, not getting on a plane.

You can bring duty free liquids in tamper-evident bags.

If you are carrying medically necessary liquids then you can bring containers larger than 3.4 oz. You do need to take out oversize liquids for additional screening.

If you are bringing drinks for infants like milk, juice, water, baby formula, or breast milk you can bring then in larger containers.

Failing that, if you are bringing liquids, gels, and aerosols larger than 3.4 oz or 100 ml you’ll need to pack them in your checked baggage whether you are have TSA PreCheck or not.

The Bottom Line

It’s a nice idea but TSA Pre Check doesn’t let travelers fly with any more liquids, gels, creams and pastes than normal.

You can only bring containers that are 3.4 oz or less. Pack all your liquids in one quart-size bag.

Usually, passengers need to remove this bag from their luggage at the x-ray machine, but since you have TSA PRE on your boarding card you don’t have to.

TSA Requirements for Travel-Size Toiletries

Traveling light with only a carry-on can save you time at the airport by not having to go through baggage check-in or waiting at baggage carousels when you land. But TSA requirements can make packing tricky. To maximize room in your carry-on bag, substitute TSA-approved items for unregulated alternatives.

Know TSA requirements

TSA's 3-1-1 rule limits you to taking anything you can squeeze out, pour out or spray out in a 3.4-ounce or smaller container. That means limiting the amount of toothpaste, hair spray, cologne and other toiletries you can take on board. To make the task more challenging, all the containers you take must fit in one quart-size plastic zip-top bag.

Get around the 3-1-1 rule

If the 3-1-1 rule sounds like it will cramp your beauty style, don't worry. Just substitute as many liquids as you can with dry products. Here's a few ideas to get you started.

  • Go back to basic bar soap . Soap doesn't have to be harsh on your skin. Many bar soap brands make a thick, pouf-friendly lather that is a good stand-in for gels. Or, look for a bar that moisturizes and exfoliates.
  • Do a dry shampoo . Most hotels supply you with free shampoo and conditioner, but if you want to bring your own, switch over to dry. Try sulfate-free bar shampoos with coconut and argan oils to nourish your locks and make a rich lather. Follow up your shampoo with a silky conditioner bar.
  • Clean your face. Use a solid facial cleansing stick.
  • Beat dry skin the dry way . Some beeswax moisturizing bars come in their own travel-friendly tin. Your body warmth turns the texture from dry to creamy as you smooth it along your skin.
  • Protect your skin. Use an SPF 70 sunscreen stick. The formula goes on completely dry.
  • Discourage pests from biting. Use a solid insect repellent stick. Some repellent sticks contain 30 percent DEET to fend off mosquitos, biting flies, ticks and chiggers. Natural bug repellents fend off pests without DEET. Check out after-bug balm sticks to soothe any bites.
  • Pack alternatives to liquid makeup. This helps you look your best without having to worry about TSA limits. Some major name brands make foundation sticks that you simply rub on and blend.
  • Clean your clothes. Use laundry soap sheets. The sheets dissolve in water and are useful for either machine or hand-washing.

How Big Can My Toiletry Bag Be To Fly? Quart-Size Bags (TSA Laws)

Learn the TSA laws on quart-size bags for flying with toiletries. Perfect your carry-on packing with essential tips for travelers.

tsa travel size toiletries

If you’re planning on packing toiletries that are liquid in your carry-on, they must be placed in a plastic quart-size bag. Each passenger is allowed to bring one quart-size bag in their carry-on bag. So, how big can my toiletry bag be?

The quart-size bag needed for toiletries comes in two size dimensions. Most quart-sized bags appropriate for traveling are 7 by 8 inches or 6 by 9 inches. The bag must be clear and resealable. If you’re only bringing a few toiletries, you are allowed to use a clear plastic bag that is smaller than 1 quart.

Making sure you have the right size of toiletry bag is important when getting ready for the airport. If you’re unsure of which bags are appropriate for packing toiletries, you’ve come to the right page. Today, we’re going to discuss everything you should know about the quart-size bag for travel.

Can I Bring 2 Quart Size Bags On A Plane?

If you have 2 quart-size bags of toiletries, it’s recommended to pack one of them in your checked luggage.  Passengers aren’t allowed to have two bags of liquids in their carry-on bags.

tsa travel size toiletries

Always check the size dimensions of the bottles you’re packing. You can only containers that are 3.4 fluid ounces or less in the toiletry bag. If you’re using the full-size bottles, they will not be allowed on the plane in your carry-on.

You should put the amount of product you need for the days you’re traveling into smaller bottles. By doing that, you may be able to fit all of your essential toiletries into one bag.

Have you limited your toiletries, but still find yourself needing more than a single quart bag? Place your oversized items in your checked luggage. Passengers can bring up to 2 liters/ 70 fluid ounces of liquid in their checked bags.

If you arrive at the security gate with 2 or more quart-size bags with toiletries, you will not be allowed to take them all on the plane anyways. TSA will either confiscate the additional bags or make you pay to have them shipped to your home address.

How Many Quart Size Bags Can I Carry On?

Each passenger is allowed to bring one quart-sized bag with toiletries in their carry-on bag.  There is a limit on how much liquid passengers can travel with on the plane.

One quart-size bag may not seem like a lot of room for toiletries. That is why you should only bring the amount of product you need for the time you’re away. Many passengers find they don’t use enough of each toiletry product during a one-week trip to fill a quart bag.

Travel-size containers and bottles will lighten up your load. You can also find many best-selling toiletry items available in travel sizes as well.

Can I Bring A Gallon Ziploc Bag On The Plane?

Passengers aren't allowed to bring gallon bags on the plane.  The maximum size of the bag that you can use for toiletries on the plane is a quart. One gallon can hold four quarts, which is much bigger than the size limit.

If you need a gallon-size bag for your toiletries, you can place them in your checked luggage. Your checked luggage is a better spot to pack things like makeup bags, gifts containing liquid, and full-size toiletries. This will save you time and hassle at the security gates.

What Items Are Allowed In My Clear Quart Size Bag?

Any item that is a fluid and in a travel-size bottle (or smaller) is allowed in your clear quart-size bag.  According to TSA, any item that is a viscous or free-flowing substance is classified as a fluid.

tsa travel size toiletries

It’s not just liquid items that should go in your clear quart bag. Any item that is a gel, lotion, paste, aerosol, or oil will need to go in the clear bag. There are several items that people don’t realize belong in the bag, like makeup, sauces, toothpaste, and more.

Using travel-size bottles is recommended, but you can even use smaller containers to bring more products in your bag. Check out the crafts supply section at a department store to find miniature jars and containers for storage.

There are several types of small containers that can be used to hold minimal product. This is great for items you won’t need a lot of while you’re away, like face cream, face wash, and foot cream.

What Items Are NOT Allowed In My Clear Quart Bag?

Several types of fluids that aren’t intended for personal hygiene or nourishment aren’t allowed in the clear quart bag.  Any type of alcohol that is over 70% isn’t allowed in your carry-on bag.

tsa travel size toiletries

Additionally, any product in an aerosol can that is not for body care won't be allowed in your carry-on. Other liquids that are denied are flammable liquid, pepper spray, mace, and bleach.

It should also be noted that any liquid in a container that is larger than 3.4 fluid oz isn’t allowed in the clear quart bag. If the container can hold more than 3.4 oz but is currently holding less than that, it will still be denied.

Passengers are allowed to place other body care items in their toiletry bag, even if they aren’t liquid. Always be prepared for TSA’s powder rule if you're bringing any powdered product on board. This rule limits passengers to travel with a maximum of 12 oz of a powder substance.

What Is The TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule?

TSA has a 3-1-1 liquid rule to help passengers understand their rules regarding carrying liquids on a plane.  Each number in the 3-1-1 sequence is used to help people remember what’s okay to pack.

tsa travel size toiletries

  • 3 is for the size of the bottles that fluids can be placed in. Each bottle must be 3.4 ounces or less.
  • The first 1 is for the bag that the items need to be placed in. All containers holding liquid must be inside one quart-sized clear bag.
  • The second 1 is for the number of quart bags each passenger is allowed to have in their carry-on bag. There is a limit of one plastic toiletry bag per traveler.

When a passenger packs too many toiletries or bottles that are too big, it can hold them up at the security gate. The traveler is also at risk of losing money, either by confiscation of their items or having to pay for postage to send the items home.

The 3-1-1 liquid rule makes it easier for passengers to remember what they can pack to avoid this situation.

Do TSA Toiletry Bags Have To Be Clear?

TSA doesn’t claim that toiletry bags have to be clear.  However, it is strongly recommended to pack your items in a clear bag to avoid inspection. This is will help you get passed the gates quicker without any problems.

tsa travel size toiletries

Tinted bags that are transparent are also okay for use as toiletry bags. When the TSA agents can see what’s inside, they don’t have to take a look for themselves.

If you travel frequently, we recommend buying a clear travel bag for toiletries. Brands like Truffle and Bumkins have TSA-approved toiletry bags. When you buy from a brand that’s TSA-approved, you won’t have problems at the security check.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make sure your toiletries pass the check. Take a look in your pantry to see what size of reusable bags you have. As long as they hold under a quart, they will be acceptable.

How Do I Pack Toiletries For A Flight?

Strategically packing your toiletry bag can allow you more room for the items you need.  The first thing you need to do is put all of the items you will be using into containers that are 3.4 oz or smaller.

Once you have your bottles ready, we suggest trying out a few different ways to place them in the bag. This will allow you to see what works best for the bottles and the bag you’re using.

If you have a lot of toiletries, it’s recommended to only pack the liquid items in your bag. This will allow you to have excess space in case you have forgotten an item.

What Are The Dimensions Of A Quart-Sized Bag According To TSA?

TSA defines the dimensions of a quart-sized bag as 6 by 9 inches . According to Ask TSA, any bag that is approximately the size of a quart bag will get passed. Other dimensions that are still able to hold a quart will pass the security check.

tsa travel size toiletries

This rule does allow passengers some leniency on the bags they use. There are clear and tinted bags of many sizes and dimensions. As long as they hold under one quart, travelers may use them for toiletries.

If you’re not 100% sure whether your toiletry bag will pass the check, you can always use a Ziploc or similar style bag from your pantry. Always measure it first to make sure it doesn’t exceed the 6 by 9 inches measurement.

What Toiletries Need To Be In A Clear Plastic Bag?

Any toiletry that’s considered a fluid by TSA’s rules needs to be placed in a clear plastic bag.  Let’s take a look at what these include so you’re not left with any confusion.

Liquid Soaps

Place any liquid soaps or cleansers you're traveling with in your quart bag. This includes body wash and face cleanser. To make your packing lighter, we suggest looking for sample sizes of these products from your favorite brands.

Dental Products

11 tsa friendly travel size toiletries.

Whenever you're going on a trip, you need to bring your essentials along for the journey. Travel-size toiletries are a must when you're away from home — obviously, bringing all your full-size products just isn't practical or even doable. But this doesn’t mean you can’t bring everything you want.

There are countless travel-size products, from bathing to beauty. You'll never have to be without when you have the mini version of everything. Before you go out of town again, consider what products you can’t live without for even a few days. We have a list of travel-size toiletries you may want to add to your travel bag before your next trip.

1. Beauty Trio Set

The Spongellé Beauty Trio is what you need for your shower routine on the road. The set comes with three body washes infused with refreshing scents. They are accepted on all airlines, and you won't have to worry about anything spilling or breaking.

You only need one Spongetté for vacation or business trips, and you get over five full washes per body wash. You simply moisten the buffer and squeeze it to lather. Massage it over your body using circular motions to clean your skin. You can rinse and squeeze out the excess water after each use. It would also make the perfect gift set for someone that travels often!

All of our buffers are dermatologist tested, vegan friendly, and cruelty-free . They're an all-in-one treatment with yuzu, edelweiss, and vetiver extract.

  • Spongology Travel-Sized Buffers

If you just can’t live without a Spongelle buffer, then our Travel Buffers from the Shower With Nature collection are for you. These buffers are all eco-friendly and made with a skin-softening formula of rosehips, green tea, and hibiscus. They use essential oils to transport you to a place of relaxation and rejuvenation whether you’re traveling for business or fun.

For a tropical feel, you can try our Coconut Travel Buffer with strong notes of coconut milk, tonka, and vanilla. For a deeply calming sensation while you shower, we suggest the Lavender Travel Buffer , which has a heavenly mix of rosemary, cardamom, spearmint, lavender, and musk.

If you’re feeling adventurous during your travels and want to try something new, try one of our more unique scents like the Tuberose Travel Buffer . This buffer offers an earthy, floral scent that will help you feel grounded and relaxed, so you can feel well-rested and ready to start your day.

  • Men's Buffer

If you can’t live without a body sponge on your travels, try the Spongellé travel size Men's Super Buffer . The convenient travel size buffer is ideal for minimizing your travel needs. It will allow you to scrub, cleanse, and hydrate your body. It's the perfect all-in-one shower loofah.

The buffer moisturizes and nourishes your skin for a refreshing clean during your travels. And with the energizing scent of Verbena Absolute, you’ll be ready to go out and greet the day even after a long flight.

For a treatment that’s focused on rejuvenation, use the Men’s Supreme Buffer . It is made with Cedar Absolute and is enriched with black tea and coffee extracts to help your skin feel smooth and restored.

The Men’s Extreme Buffer offers a spicier shower experience with built-in body wash to energize your skin. It has cayenne pepper extract to help boost circulation. Each of these travel size All In One Men’s Treatments can be used for 5+ washes.

  • Men’s Mini Super Buffer

If you need an even smaller men's body sponge, try the Men's Mini Super Buffer . The mini travel size buffer is essential when you have limited space in your bag.

The built-in body wash is enriched with a blend ofrefreshing extracts. It has yuzu, edelweiss, and vetiver to nourish the skin. Vetiver is an anti-bacterial shield that helps wash away built-up dirt and pollutants that get stuck in your pores. It's a fantastic natural cleanser that can leave you with a brighter complexion.

  • Heart Buffer

Sometimes, not everything goes as planned on a trip. It can be disheartening to realize you left something behind, or your plans got changed. However, nothing lifts the spirits like a shower with one of these revitalizing heart-shaped buffers.

Pamper and refresh yourself with the Proud|Black Orchid Heart Buffer . It is infused with the delicate scents of Orchid Petals, Jasmine, and Bergamont. Use this on your next trip and your travel troubles will melt away and leave your skin feeling soft and relaxed.

Like the other heart buffers that Spongellé offers, the Be Mine|French Lavender Heart Buffer and Beautiful|Voilet Leaf Heart Buffer provide an all-in-one beauty treatment. With a built-in body wash, you can cleanse, exfoliate, massage, and nourish your skin for 5+ washes. These aromatic heart buffers give you the opportunity to experience that “ahhh” spa feeling even while you travel.

  • Hand Cream

Whether you're using hand sanitizer, washing your hands a lot, or it's cold where you're traveling, you may experience dryness. Having a moisturizer can save your skin and provide much-needed nourishment. Hand cream is richer than your average body lotion and can lock in moisture.

Try one of Spongellé's signature hand creams, like French Lavender or Honey Blossom. It's formulated to soothe and hydrate your skin. It's enriched with hyaluronic acid, shea butter, argan, and macadamia seed oils, which are great for bringing dry skin back to life.

It comes in a two-ounce tube, so it's perfect for throwing in your carry-on bag and going!

  • Hand Defense Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer is a must-have for many people now more than ever, but especially when they travel. You may have just touched a door handle or the buttons on a credit card pin pad and don't have time to go to a sink. Hand sanitizer can be an effective way to kill germs when you can't properly wash your hands.

You may not like hand sanitizer since it often smells like alcohol and can be extremely drying on your skin. However, Hand Defense Sanitizer by Spongellé isn't your typical sanitizer. It's infused with vitamin E and glycerin, which hydrates your skin like a lotion.

The sea salt rose scent disguises the 70% alcohol in the sanitizer that's killing 99.9% of bacteria . It will last your entire trip and beyond with 90+ pumps in the 3.3-ounce container, so it's still small enough to take on a plane!

  • Private Reserve Perfume

You obviously can't take your full-size perfume bottles with you when you travel. However, that doesn't mean you have to go without a fragrance when you're away from home. Bring a Spongellé Private Reserve Petite Eau de Toilettes.

It's designed to be sprayed onto your body after you shower. The scent will linger all day. The Peony Flower fragrance has a poetic yet sensual smell with notes of spice, musk, and exotic flowers.

It comes in an easy-to-use portable spray bottle. It's paraben and sulfate-free and will be your new must-have travel product!

Don’t want to leave your favorite Spongellé products at home? Here is everything you love about Spongellé in airline accepted form.

These spongettes are infused with enriched body wash to cleanse your skin and leave it feeling youthful and fresh. A time-release lather allows for thick, creamy swirls of suds while you bathe. However, with these beauties, there’s nothing to spill, break, or leak in your baggage.

All spongettes are cruelty-free, and dermatologist tested for a worry-free beauty experience. They are available in many delightful scents like the Bulgarian Rose Spongette , Fresca Pear Spongette , and the Beach Grass Spongette , so you can relax all throughout your travels.

  • Travel Pack*

Everyone needs a toiletry bag to hold all of their personal care products. You also need a separate bag to keep things that get wet, like your buffer. Instead of throwing your buffer or loofah in with your other products, place it in this custom travel bag.

The Spongellé Travel Case is waterproof, so it's perfect for storing your sponge. It fits almost all of the Spongellé body buffers and is easy to fit in your carry-on. The bag is made with a YKK zipper and is reusable.

Travel Tips

Before you go on your next trip, we have a few other travel kit tips and tricks to keep in mind.

Refillable Bottles

You can use refillable travel-size bottles and containers for shampoo, conditioner, other haircare, skincare, sunscreen, styling cream, makeup remover, and any products you may need. You simply squeeze in the amount you will need for the days you are going to be away. When you get back, you can clean out the travel bottles and save them for your next trip.

Forgotten Toiletries

You may inevitably forget to bring one of your toiletries and not realize it until you need it — it’s always the dry shampoo for us. Thankfully, hotels usually have several personal care items on hand.

Even if it's not in your room, you can call the front desk and request complimentary shampoo, conditioner, antiperspirant or deodorant, toothpaste, travel toothbrush, mouthwash, face wash, lotion, razors, and shaving cream. The front desk can also often provide first aid supplies and women’s hygiene products.

Bring Solid Toiletries

There are many items that you can get in solid forms like soap, SPF, and even laundry detergent. They come in small travel-size containers, and they aren't in the TSA liquid category. You can also opt for cleansing towelettes instead of liquid makeup remover. You won't have to worry about them spilling out in your bag and causing a mess.

Keep Toiletries in Clear Bag

Even if all of your liquid toiletries are travel-size products, you may still be stopped at TSA. They may ask you to get them out of your bag so they can examine them. The last thing you want is to have to open up multiple toiletry bags.

Instead, keep all of your liquid products in a clear bag and pack them last so it's at the top of your belongings. This way, if you need to get them out, they are all in one place and easy to access.

Ready to Board

Packing for a getaway can feel overwhelming, and it can be easy to forget items. However, if you put together your travel toiletries beforehand, it will be a lot less stressful to pick up and go anytime. Spongellé has several travel-friendly products that you'll love!

What is allowed in a carry-on bag.

Follow this guide to pack like a pro and ensure airport security is a breeze.

Know what you can and can't include in your carry-on bag so you'll be best prepared for your next airport experience.

As all air travelers know, it can be incredibly frustrating to discover you've packed something that isn't allowed through airport security. Whether traveling for pleasure or business, you can make your flight smoother by understanding the restrictions affecting your carry-on luggage. Use this guide to take the hassle out of your next trip.

The 3-1-1 Rule or Liquids Rule

Carry-on allowances and restrictions are determined by the Transportation Security Administration. These rules apply to items in carry-on bags (carry-on-sized suitcases, backpacks, purses, laptop bag and mores) that you plan to take through security. The TSA's 3-1-1 rule outlines the travel limitations for liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes. Here's a breakdown:

  • 3: All travel-sized containers must hold no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) of liquid.
  • 1: All containers holding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes must be placed within one sealed quart-sized bag.
  • 1: Only one quart-sized bag is allowed per passenger, even if you have multiple carry-on bags for your flight.

Keep in mind that purchasing additional carry-on luggage will not allow you more of these restricted items. Additionally, containers that hold more than 3.4 ounces will not be allowed, even if they are not completely full.

The following list covers many of the items you're allowed to pack in your carry-on . Read on for more information on each type of item and what limits apply.

Sports and exercise equipment

Dietary supplements, blankets and pillows, medical items and equipment, razors and other hair removal tools, food and snacks, personal electronic devices and accessories, smoking paraphernalia, nature-related items, solid candles.

A mother and her baby pack a suitcase in a bedroom bedroom before leaving for a trip

The top travel priority for any new parent is how to care for your baby while on a flight. While the 3-1-1 rule applies to most carry-on items, you'll be happy to know that items related to the care and feeding of your baby are less restricted. Baby formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and food for babies and toddlers are considered medically necessary liquids by the TSA, so quantities larger than 3.4 ounces may be packed separate from the quart-sized bag in your carry-on baggage.

Accessories needed to transport these items, such as ice or freezer packs, are also allowed without restriction. These items can be transported even if you are traveling without the liquids or your child, but you must inform a TSA officer at the beginning of the screening process. To make your security experience smoother, TSA also recommends you transport any liquids in clear, translucent bottles rather than plastic bags or pouches. In addition, the following items can be packed in your hand luggage: a baby carrier, a child car seat, baby powder, baby wipes and a breast pump.

Whether you are a serious athlete or a casual player, most sports and exercise-related equipment is allowed in your carry-ons. The following sports balls can be included: basketballs, baseballs, footballs, soccer balls, golf balls, bocce balls and bowling balls. Sports cleats and helmets are also permitted. Golf enthusiasts can pack divot tools and tees, but there are restrictions for other golf equipment. If you're headed to a cold climate for some outdoor fun, you can pack your snowboards, snowshoes and ice skates. Crampons are also generally permitted in carry-on bags, but TSA officers can remove them at their discretion.

Your helmet, bicycle chain and bicycle pump can be packed, but bicycles, skateboards, hoverboards and segways may face restrictions based on your airline's carry-on policy. Additional sports and exercise equipment allowed in carry-on luggage includes rollerblades, longboards, boxing gloves, fishing poles, small fishing lures (with sharp objects properly sheathed), pickleball paddles, tennis rackets, foam yoga blocks and yoga mats. Sports equipment that can be used as a bludgeon, such as clubs or bats, is not allowed in the cabin.

Dietary supplements, protein powder and energy powders (like pre-workout and creatine) are all allowed in powder or pill form. If you are packing powder-like substances greater than 12 ounces (350 milliliters), be sure to place the containers in a separate bin for X-ray screening. They may require additional screening or need to be opened for testing.

A smiling woman sitting on the airplane thanks an air stewardess for a blanket

These are not restricted by the TSA. If you don't yet have a travel blanket, U.S. News recommends the BlueHills Premium Soft Travel Blanket Pillow for airplanes. It doubles as a blanket or pillow for the plane. If you have a favorite pillow that you can't imagine sleeping without, have no fear: Pillows can be packed in your carry-on luggage without restriction. Or, consider one of U.S. News' top travel pillows .

Dealing with medical needs can be stressful enough without adding travel. If you're concerned about accommodating your needs, alert your airline at check-in to ensure you have a positive experience. Medications in pill form, including vitamins, are typically allowed without major restrictions, though destinations sometimes have their own regulations. Any liquid, gel or aerosol medications that are medically necessary (including insulin, EpiPens and inhalers) can be transported in excess of the 3-1-1 rule, but you must declare them to TSA officers at the checkpoint for inspection.

Pill organizers are a great option for traveling with basic medication, but prescriptions are best kept in their original packaging or clearly labeled. If your mobility is limited, inform the TSA officer at the checkpoint so accommodations can be made to screen you and your belongings safely and quickly. For more information regarding disability and medical conditions, check out the TSA's website or contact your airline.

Many makeup products are limited by the TSA's 3-1-1 rule for carry-on luggage. If you are traveling with any of the following, you will need to adhere to the 3.4-ounce restriction: concealer, liquid eyeliner, foundation, mascara, other liquid makeup and makeup remover. Solid and powder makeup are not restricted but will need to be placed in a separate bin for screening if they exceed 12 ounces (350 milliliters). Lipsticks, lip balms, makeup wipes and airbrush makeup machines can be packed in carry-ons without restriction.

The following cosmetics are also restricted by the TSA's 3-1-1 rule: hair gel, hairspray, aerosol hair texturizer, nail polish and nail polish remover. Nail clippers and metal nail files are unrestricted but should be sheathed to avoid injury. Hair styling tools like curling irons and straighteners should have their heating element safely covered if they're cordless.

Clear bag containing toiletries on top of clothes in a carry-on bag

Since many toiletries are subject to the TSA's 3-1-1 restriction, consider packing your carry-on items in a TSA-approved toiletry bag like one from PACKISM or check out U.S. News' picks for the best toiletry bags . Items subject to the 3-1-1 rule include liquid and aerosol deodorant, cologne, perfume, shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, lotion, sunscreen and toothpaste. Outside of your clear quart-sized bag, you can pack your solid deodorant, toothbrush (manual and electronic), tweezers and mirrors. For recommendations on eco-friendly travel-sized products, check out this piece on sustainable travel .

Disposable and electric razors are allowed without restriction, but sharp edges should be securely sheathed to avoid injury. Safety razors are allowed, but the blades must be removed and packed securely in your checked bag. Laser hair removal devices and hair clippers are not restricted, but shaving cream must adhere to the 3-1-1 rule.

All drinks are subject to the TSA's 3-1-1 rule, including bottled water, coffee and tea (in liquid form), juices, smoothies, soda, and alcoholic beverages up to 70%. TSA requests that you do not consume your personal alcohol in-flight. An airport's duty-free section is a great alternative to trying to pack alcohol.

If you prefer to travel with your own cup or container for beverages (such as a coffee thermos or water bottle), you will need to ensure it is empty before passing through security. You can fill empty beverage containers on the other side. Ice must be frozen solid when passing through security or it will be subject to the 3-1-1 rule.

Smiling young girl having a snack during her airplane fight along with her father

Solid foods are allowed through security but may be restricted by your arrival destination, so be sure to check travel regulations for your destination. Some foods can cause obstructions during the X-ray process, so the TSA recommends you remove food items from your bag before screening. Allowed foods include bread, cereal, cheese (solid), cooked meat, cooked seafood, cooked vegetables (no liquid), fresh eggs, nuts, pies and cakes, pizza, salt, sandwiches, spices (dry), coffee (beans or ground), and tea (dry tea bags or loose tea leaves).

The following food items are allowed but restricted by the 3-1-1 rule: canned foods, cheese (creamy), chocolate (liquid), cream, creamy dips and spreads, gravy, honey, hummus, ice cream, jam and jelly, maple syrup, oils and vinegars, peanut butter, salad dressing, salsa and sauces, soups, and yogurt. Small snack foods can also be taken through security. This includes candy, chocolate (solid), cookies, crackers, dried fruits, gum, popped popcorn, nuts and snack bars. Fresh fruits and vegetables are permitted as long as your destination doesn't have any restrictions on the item.

Personal devices should be packed in a convenient location in your carry-on luggage because electronics must be removed from your bag and placed in a separate bin for screening. This includes cell phones, desktop computers, digital cameras, laptops and tablets. Consider purchasing a travel backpack with a separate pocket for electronics, like the Solgaard Lifepack Endeavour (with closet) , to make security a breeze.

Cigarettes, cigars, hookahs, tobacco and tobacco pipes are permitted without restriction, but you are strictly prohibited from using those items aboard most aircrafts. If you do pack these items, make sure any disposable or Zippo lighters are emptied of fuel and that any arc lighters, plasma lighters, electronic lighters, lithium-battery-powered lighters, e-lighters, electronic cigarettes and vaping devices are stored in a way that prevents accidental activation on the plane. This can include removing the batteries and either placing the item in a protective case or using a protective cover, safety latch or locking device. Any e-liquids must adhere to the 3-1-1 rule.

Batteries for commonly owned devices are allowed in carry-on bags. This includes dry batteries (AA, AAA, C, and D), lithium batteries, fuel cells and nonspillable wet batteries. Large batteries, such as those used for vehicles or wheelchairs, are typically restricted. If you must travel with a battery of this size, you should speak with a TSA agent and your airline prior to going through security. Additional information on battery restrictions can be found in the Federal Aviation Administration regulations .

Items ready to pack including clothing, straw hat, binoculars, camera, flip flops, shoes, sea shells, book, suitcase, beach towel, sunglasses and passport

While TSA doesn't restrict natural items like rocks or shells at security, it is important to check the restrictions for your arrival destination as many have restrictions to avoid the possibility of introducing an invasive species to a new environment. Assuming no destination restrictions, flowers can be brought through security if they are not in water. Live corals, live lobsters and live fish can be transported in water if they are in a clear container and have been inspected by a TSA officer.

Typically, any tools that are 7 inches or less in length are allowed in carry-on bags. Tools exceeding this length are restricted. Keep in mind that sharp objects must be properly sheathed to avoid potential injury. Multi-tools that do not have knives but do contain scissors shorter than 4 inches are allowed, but multi-tools with blades are prohibited.

You can bring one book of safety matches on board, but they must not be strike anywhere. Parachutes can also be brought as carry-on luggage but must be packed separately from other luggage. Flashlights are not restricted but be sure to check that the batteries meet TSA regulations before you pack.

Solid candles are unrestricted, but make sure to check the section below on what isn't allowed in carry-on bags to see what restrictions there are for other candle types.

Back of woman with umbrella and suitcase just arriving in Budapest

These are allowed through TSA checks without restrictions, but you should check with your airline as each may have its own size and weight restrictions. A safe bet is to purchase an umbrella like the Weatherman Travel Umbrella which weighs less than a pound and measures just under 12 long when closed. If there's an item you want to bring that you don't see covered in this article, do not fret. You can check with your airline or the AskTSA team for more information.

What Isn't Allowed in a Carry-on Bag?

Here is an overview of items that are not allowed in the cabin when you fly. Check the TSA page What Can I Bring? for a full list.

  • Alcoholic beverages over 140 proof, or 70%, are not allowed.
  • Weapons: You cannot bring knives (pocket, swiss army, utility, kirpans, razor-type blades), guns (BB, cap, pellet, compressed air), ammunition and gun powder, axes and hatchets, bows and arrows, firearms and rifles, martial arts weapons, and realistic replicas of weapons in your carry-on.
  • Weapons (self-defense): These include kubatons, pepper and self-defense sprays, brass knuckles, blackjacks, night sticks, stun guns and shocking devices, and tactical pens.
  • Explosives: Items creating or replicating an explosion are banned. This includes bang snaps, dynamite, English Christmas crackers, firecracker, fireworks, flare guns, flares, hand grenades, party poppers, sparklers and vehicle airbags.
  • Certain sports and exercise equipment: Items that can be used as a bludgeon are not allowed in the cabin. TSA restrictions apply to clubs, bats, hockey and walking sticks, canoe and kayak paddles, bowling pins, darts, hiking and ski poles, ice axes and ice picks, shoe and snow spikes, snow cleats, starter pistols, and more.
  • Certain medical items and equipment: Battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility devices, gel heating pads, and a mercury medical-clinical thermometer cannot be carried on.
  • Tools: Restriction prohibit box cutters, crowbars, drills and drill bits, hammers, nail guns, saws and screwdrivers longer than 7 inches.
  • Flammable gases and liquids: Be sure not to pack engines and engine-powered equipment, fire extinguishers and other compressed gas cylinders, fuels, spillable batteries, strike anywhere matches, flammable paints (liquid, gel, spray, aerosol), turpentine and paint thinner, and more.
  • Safety razor with blades
  • Gel-type candles

The rules and restrictions outlined in this article aren't the only things to consider when packing your carry-on. In addition to the 3-1-1 rule, travelers should be aware that some airlines have different regulations on the types of items, liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes that are allowed onboard. This is particularly important when traveling internationally as restrictions differ by country. For example, New Zealand is a particularly restrictive country when it comes to traveling with foods, plants, seeds and grains due to its delicate ecosystem.

Confirm your destination restrictions before packing to avoid difficulties getting through customs when you arrive. TSA agents are also given the authority to make the final call on whether an item is allowed through security, so it's best to pack things you're uncertain about in your checked luggage rather than your carry-on.

How many 1-quart bags can you bring on a plane?

You can bring up to two 1-quart bags of liquids on a plane. Each item must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and placed in a single, clear, plastic, quart-sized bag.

What is the purpose of clear TSA approved toiletry bags in different sizes?

TSA approved toiletry bags are designed to meet the airline's 3-1-1 rule for storing liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on luggage. They are made of clear plastic so they can easily be seen by TSA personnel when passing through a security checkpoint. The different sizes allow travelers to choose the right bag for their needs, such as a small bag for a few essential items or a larger bag to store all of their toiletries.

clear makeup bags

Packism Clear TSA Approved Toiletry Bags are the perfect solution for travelers who need to bring travel essentials on their air travel. Traveling with liquids can be a hassle but this Packism clear makeup bag makes it easier.

1. Is it normal for clear plastic cosmetic bags to harden in winter?

Yes, it is normal for a clear plastic makeup bag to become stiff in cold weather. This is because the material's molecular chains slow down, making it less flexible. To help keep the bag soft and pliable, it is best to store it in a warm place and keep it away from direct sunlight. Secondly, you can try using hot water if the piece is small and thin or a hair drier on hot if a small section of a larger piece needs to be softened. Additionally, some people recommend adding a few drops of olive oil or coconut oil to the bag to help keep it soft and pliable.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. —  It’s not always easy to determine whether an item should be packed in a carry-on bag, a checked bag, either or neither, so the Transportation Security Administration is offering a handful of tips to help travelers flying out of Atlantic City International Airport know how to properly pack an item before heading to the airport.

  • Tip 1: Visit tsa.gov and in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage, click on “What can I bring?” Type in the item and you will find out immediately if it should be packed in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither.
  • Tip 2: Tweet a photo of the item or the name of the item to @AskTSA. TSA’s Twitter team will let you know if the item should go in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither. Live assistance is available from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST daily.
  • Tip 3: Use Facebook Messenger to ask about an item at fb.com/AskTSA. Live assistance is available from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. daily.
  • Tip 4: Call the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673. Automated information is available anytime in several languages. Representatives are available 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. EST weekdays; 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. weekends and holidays.
  • Tip 5: TSA has an app for that! Download the free “myTSA” app. It has a handy feature, “Can I bring?” Tap the “Can I bring?” icon and type in a search to find out if an item is permitted or prohibited.

Tips on traveling with liquids limit

TSA has a limit on the size of liquids, gels and aerosols that travelers can bring in their carry-on bags. It’s called the 3-1-1 liquids rule . Each item must be 3.4 ounces or less and must be able to fit inside a one-quart size clear zip-top bag. The limit is one bag per person. Typically, travelers put their toiletries in the bag such as shampoo, hair products, make-up and toothpaste. Individuals who want to pack their large bottle of shampoo or full-size toothpaste should pack those items in their checked bags.

Tips on traveling with food

Sometimes individuals want to travel with food items. That’s just fine TSA. If you’ve spent time baking your favorite cookies, or if you want to bring a birthday cake or other tasty treats, you can bring these other food items with you when you fly. If the food item is a solid (i.e.: cookies, cake, pie, pizza), then you can pack it in your carry-on bag. If the food item is spreadable or pourable, then it must be 3.4 ounces or less to comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule to travel in your carry-on bag. If it has more than 3.4 liquid ounces, then it should be packed in a tightly sealed container in a checked bag. If you’re unsure if your food item should go in a checked bag, consider this: If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it or pour it, then please pack it in your checked bag.

Tips on traveling with gifts

Sometimes travelers want to bring gifts to friends and loved ones. That’s also just fine with TSA. What we hope that you understand is that if your wrapped gift triggers an alarm, the gift might need to be unwrapped for TSA officers to resolve the alarm. So instead of wrapping a gift, please consider using a gift bag or a gift box so that resolving the alarm will just mean removing the item from the gift bag or gift box without needing to unwrap it. Or, consider wrapping the gift upon your arrival.
