The 12 best vineyards in the UK

Take a trip to one of the most stunning vineyards and wineries in the UK

Ed Cunningham

Sure, it’s been the butt of many (mostly French) jokes for decades, but UK wine can be – whisper it – really rather good. From chardonnay in Dorset and organic vinos in Kent to sparkling blushes near Cardiff , there’s plenty of proof out there that we Brits aren’t just a nation of wine drinkers – we’re pretty darn good at making the stuff, too.

And better yet: plenty of the UK’s best vineyards are open to the public. A huge range of wineries can be found dotted throughout country, many with their own brilliant restaurants (featuring some marvellous set menus and pairings) and dazzling views of the British countryside .

Plenty of British wines can hold their own against the usual contenders in France, Italy, New Zealand and the like. Indeed, the country’s wine scene is growing all the time. Here are the very best vineyards and wineries to visit that’ll have you on the British wine bandwagon in no time.

Beautiful vineyards in the UK

Llanerch Vineyard Hotel

1.  Llanerch Vineyard Hotel

It might be located in the peace and quiet of the Welsh countryside but one of the other many benefits to visiting Llanerch Vineyard is that it’s also only about a half-hour journey from Cardiff . That accessibility is pretty important when you consider how remote some other vineyards in the UK can be. This vineyard is the oldest in Wales and produces the grapes for a range of wines that span from off-dry white to sparkling blush. Extremely drinkable stuff.

Forty Hall Vineyard

2.  Forty Hall Vineyard

Yes, London has vineyards, too. This social enterprise, which produces both still and sparkling English wines, is largely run by volunteers. It’s the first commercial-scale vineyard in London since the middle ages (!) and an excellent showcase of why you don’t need a huge amount of space to make something truly special. Ten acres of vines are all that Forty Hall Vineyard has to make its wine but they’ve been punching well above their weight with every consecutive vintage. Not only can you take a tour of this well-meaning vineyard but you can even volunteer to help out on the land.

Chapel Down

3.  Chapel Down

Chapel Down is probably the most well-known wine producer in the UK. This Kent-based vineyard has won numerous awards throughout the years and its product is regularly exported and used to represent England’s terroir on international wine lists. The guided tour is a lot of fun and it helps that the wine is great, too. Grown on the chalky North Downs of Kent, Chapel Down’s sparkling and still wines have got a distinct flavour profile that rocks the boat just the right amount. Book yourself on the comprehensive tour and you can witness the grapes’ journey from the vine to the bottle.

4.  Westwell Wines

Producing a range of unique, sustainably-minded wines that come with extremely Instagram-friendly labels, Westwell Wines might be one of the relative newcomers to the UK wine scene but they’re already making a good deal of noise. Fermented in stainless-steel tanks so as not to impact the natural terroir of the wine, their Ortega is on the wine list at a number of trendy restaurants and it’s not hard to see why. The guided tours and tutored wine tastings are perfect for wine newbies and experienced drinkers alike.

Oxney Organic Estate

5.  Oxney Organic Estate

Rye is to the English wine community what the Napa Valley is to California. Sort of. Oxney Organic Estate is a winery and vineyard near the town that also happens to be the largest single-estate producer of English organic wine – not just in that region but in the entirety of the UK. Blessed with 35 acres of vines, Oxney is a wine lover’s paradise and a great place to have daydreams about one day starting your own little vintage. Weary travellers can stay and experience the local terroir for themselves by spending a night in one of Oxney’s on-site shepherd’s huts – something that’s probably recommended after you’ve nailed a couple of bottles of plummy pinot noir.

Camel Valley

6.  Camel Valley

I don’t know about you but the thought of ever getting into business with my family sounds like hell on earth. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case for the Lido family who run the Camel Vallery vineyard and winery in Cornwall . Having produced high-quality wines since 1989, Camel Valley has only gone from strength to strength over the years. From a fresh and fruity Bacchus to a crisp and strawberry-y Pinot Noir rosé, all of the wine here is worth adding to your cellar. The guided tours are an excellent way to see what Camel Valley is all about.

Oastbrook Estate Vineyard

7.  Oastbrook Estate Vineyard

The Oastbrook Estate vineyard is an attractive patch of Sussex countryside to while away a few pleasant hours on a hot and sunny day. Come for an information-packed tour of the winery that concludes with a tasting of some of their top-notch wines, stay for a night in the Hobbit House. Yes, that’s exactly what you think it is: a cosy hideaway located in the vineyard that looks like it’s been ripped straight from the pages of J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s the sort of gaff that Frodo would look to settle down in after trekking all the way home from Mordor. And with enough Pinot Blanc inside of you, you might just think you’ve been transported to Hobbiton yourself.

8.  Tillingham Winery

It’s hard not to be smitten by this winery and vineyard in East Sussex. Tillingham Winery specialises in natural wines (with many of them aged and fermented in traditional clay qvevri) and is definitely one of the newer kids on the block when it comes to the English wine scene. Set among 70 acres of green hills and woodlands, Tillingham is about as scenic as it gets, and the fact you can see the sea from the premises is the cherry on top. Well, that and the capable restaurant and rooms they’ve got attached to boot. A unique vineyard that’s had a lot of love put into it.

Langham Wine

9.  Langham Wine

The sparkling produced at this Dorset -based vineyard is perfect for a ‘pop the cork it’s New Year’ celebration. All the classic Champagne grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) are grown at the vineyard and the low-intervention approach they take to harvesting and making each wine is what makes it so unique. It’d be easy enough for the winemakers at Langham Wine to pump their crops with pesticides but – by committing to a cleaner, greener process – they’ve created a range of sparkling wines that have a strong sense of terroir. This is what Dorset tastes like.

Davenport Vineyards

10.  Davenport Vineyards

Davenport Vineyards have organic vineyards in Kent and Sussex . Owner Will Davenport has been on a mission to promote sustainable winemaking practices since he first started planting grapes in 1991, and the results of those years of toil have been extraordinary. The combination of traditional techniques and modern equipment has led to the creation of some truly stunning bottles of wine, and Davenport’s English white is a prime example of that. Made from a variety of grapes, it’s a zippy, summer-friendly sipper. Everything Davenport produces is organic, certified by the Soil Association and completely safe for vegan consumption.

11.  Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard

Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Snowdonia , Gwinllan Conwy is one of Wales’s most lauded vineyards. For good reason, too. The wines they produce have won a range of prestigious awards on both a domestic and international level. It’s the grapes themselves, though, that might just be the most interesting thing about Gwinllan, with deep cuts like Solaris and Rondo making up the backbone of the 3,000 vines spread across three acres of Welsh landscape. There are plenty of traditional grapes planted as well – all of which are transformed into some stellar bottles of wine by Gwinllan’s dandy winemakers.

Hambledon Vineyard

12.  Hambledon Vineyard

As England’s oldest commercial vineyard, Hambledon Vineyard has been flying the flag for English fizz for a number of years. This family-run institution might be old guard but it’s still full of new ideas. The pop-up restaurant at the vineyard is a lovely touch and the opportunity to book a tour and explore a proper part of British history is a big part of Hambledon’s charm. These lot aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

10 of the best vineyards to visit in Britain

We'll raise a glass to that

Surrey vineyard

There a number of beautiful vineyards across the UK making award-winning wine. Here are the best vineyards to visit and raise a glass to.

Acres of acid green vines, snaking over undulating slopes as they grow heavy with ripe fruits are a common sight in Tuscany but less so in the UK. But British wine has come a long way in recent years, winning numerous international accolades and tempting even the most discerning of drinkers. If you don't believe us, visit one of these wonderful UK vineyards and see for yourself.

Langham, Dorset

Agriculture, Cash crop, Crop, Plantation, Field, Vineyard, Plant, Farm, Tree, Hill station,

In deepest Hardy country, this vineyard takes a ‘low-intervention’ approach to grape growing – striving to minimise environmental impact while producing crisp quality bubbles, that are even vegan friendly. The hand-picked grapes are processed on site using an amalgamation of old and new methods, which visitors are talked through on the two hour long guided tours. Plus, visitors can enjoy lunches and afternoon teas, prepared in the 19th century milking parlour, the perfect place to grab a bite to eat after a few hours ambling among the vines. For those who prefer a more hands on experience, don’t miss the opportunity to join in picking the grapes, loading the press and meeting the team, during the autumn Harvest Experiences, which include lunch and a refreshing glass of fizz, as a reward for your hard work.

Giffords Hall, Suffolk

Bottle, Drink, Alcoholic beverage, Alcohol, Liqueur, Glass bottle, Wine, Distilled beverage, Product, Wine bottle,

Producing a smorgasbord of sparkling wine, rose and fruity red, this family run vineyard in the village of Hartest in Suffolk, sits on the clay soil site of an ancient glacial riverbed. The whole family are welcome to take part in private or group tours, even dogs are welcome – but must stay on a lead since the vineyard is also home to a collection of free-roaming lambs and chicks.

Rodington, Shropshire

Agriculture, Hill station, Vineyard, Plantation, Field, Cash crop, Sky, Farm, Highland, Crop,

It may be small, but Rodington produces some seriously robust reds, said to rival Australian shiraz, right in the heart of Shropshire. The family run vineyard has clocked up an array of awards for a range of wines and free entry to the shop and vineyard make it very tempting to try a glass or two for yourself.

Coates & Seely, Hampshire

Drink, Champagne, Alcoholic beverage, Wine, Bottle, Sparkling wine, Glass bottle, Alcohol, Liqueur, Distilled beverage,

Crafted in small batches using traditional techniques, this winery, owned by two friends, takes full advantage of the English chalk terroir on which it sits – creating bubbles which have been served at Kensington Palace. Described as ‘fabulously elegant and refined’ by the judges of the 2017 English Wine Awards, it's no surprise Coates & Seely supply some of the most prestigious events across the UK.

Sharpham Wine and Cheese, Devon

Stemware, Glass, Drink, Wine glass, Champagne stemware, Alcoholic beverage, Wine, Alcohol, Drinkware, Red wine,

Offering tastings and tours of their irresistible wines and cheeses (a dreamy combination) this award-winning vineyard uses both New World and traditional techniques that best enhance their unique regional characteristics. After a relaxed amble among the vines, guests are invited to sample Head Chef Daniel’s delicious dishes, using the freshest local and seasonal ingredients, while soaking up the picturesque grounds overlooking the River Dart. What a divine way to spend an afternoon.

Three Choirs, Gloucestershire

Bottle, Product, Liqueur, Glass bottle, Drink, Alcohol, Wine bottle, Wine, Alcoholic beverage, Distilled beverage,

Nestled within the rolling hills and valleys of rural Gloucestershire, Three Choirs enjoy a unique microclimate, allowing them to produce wonderful wine. With an onsite restaurant and rooms to stay in, a trip here would make for a relaxing weekend break. Otherwise, simply spend an afternoon strolling amongst the vines and sampling the delicious wine on offer.

Camel Valley, Cornwall

Plantation, Agriculture, Crop, Field, Cash crop, Green, Plant, Farm, Vineyard, Hill station,

Camel Valley's relaxed, friendly tours through stunning countryside are incredibly popular, and require advance booking. But if you are not lucky enough to get a spot, or simply want to taste a sample of Cornish wine, then indulge in a glass on the terrace while soaking up the wonderful view. With two idyllic cottages available to rent on the site, located close to Rick Stein’s trio of Padstow restaurants, Camel Valley makes for a wonderful foodie escape.

Chapel Down, Kent

Grape, Seedless fruit, Fruit, Grapevine family, Plant, Flower, Flowering plant, Leaf, Vitis, Food,

One of Britain's best-known vineyards, Chapel Down is set amongst 22 glorious acres of Outstanding Natural Beauty and hailed as one of the UK’s most exciting drinks companies. Their growers are experts in using traditional methods to make a world-class range of sparkling and still wines, as well as spirits, beers and cider. Fans include the likes of Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver – and Chapel Down has even delivered to No 10 Downing Street, as well as Ascot Racecourse. Embark on a daily guided tour, including a tutored tasting, and finish your day in their two AA Rosette and Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant, specialising in modern British cuisine where you can enjoy Chapel Down paired with locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

Castle Brook, Herefordshire

Grape, Plant, Seedless fruit, Fruit, Grapevine family, Flower, Food, Flowering plant, Vitis, Fruit tree,

Tucked in the Wye Valley, the Castle Brook vines were planted in 2004 on the site of an ancient Roman vineyard. They provide an ancient yet modern diversification strategy for this fourth-generation family farm. Specialising in Brut and Rosé sparkling wine, the team use traditional Champagne varieties and methods. Available for next day delivery, this Herefordshire based wine is certainly the answer if you're craving a fabulously British glass of bubbly. Each bottle bears the ‘Chinn-Chinn’ motif, a play on the Chinn family name, which had clearly destined them for success in the winemaking business.

Greyfriars, Surrey

Natural landscape, Nature, Nature reserve, Atmospheric phenomenon, Grass, Tree, Morning, Natural environment, Land lot, Leaf,

The team at Greyfriars combine traditional techniques with modern wine making technology to create crisp bubbles which have won numerous international accolades. Owners Mike and Hilary Wagstaff bought the site on the Surrey North Downs eight years ago, planting over 70,000 vines across an expanse of 50 acres. During their most recent harvest they reaped over 100 tonnes of grapes, producing close to 80,000 bottles of crisp sparkling wine. That’s certainly something to raise a glass to.

Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard

There are vineyards "blossoming" all across Wales, said Natasha Lovell-Smith on Great British Food Awards . And one of the most popular is Gwinllan Conwy, which has received multiple national and international awards. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Snowdonia Mountain Range, the "success" of this vineyard is "underpinned by the microclimate" of north Wales, which "pairs resemblance" to the climate of New Zealand. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, this means the vineyard "experiences mild winters allowing the vines to develop earlier". This beautiful vineyard offers tours and wine tasting experiences throughout the year and at the online shop you can buy Welsh artisan produce or Welsh hampers, as well as wine. gwinllanconwy.co.uk

Llanerch Vineyard, Glamorgan

Tucked into the Welsh countryside, yet only 20 minutes from Cardiff, Llanerch Vineyard offers "a drop of romance", said Kerry Walker in The Daily Telegraph . While the vineyard itself is centred on a "whitewashed farmhouse" from 1851 and pulls off the "delicate act of combining original features", the hotel rooms are "bright and contemporary". Beyond the hotel and wine, is the "perkily turreted Neo-Gothic" Hensol Castle which is only a 15-minute walk away. But where Llanerch really "shines" is its restaurant which overlooks the vineyard and offers "great" food and "bang-on" service. You may "come for a wine tour" but you'll "stay for the imaginative locally sourced food". llanerch.co.uk

Ryedale Vineyards, North Yorkshire

Ryedale Vineyards in North Yorkshire

The most northerly vineyard in Britain, Ryedale offers more than wine – it also makes cider from the estate's orchards. Voted one of the best vineyards to visit and tour in England, it offers an "informal, humorous and informative guided tour". For those wanting to stay, Ryedale has two "cosy en suite rooms in the farmhouse", said The Guardian , and the "slap-up breakfast" is the "perfect way to start a day" exploring the surrounding North Yorkshire wolds. ryedalevineyards.co.uk

7 Luxury UK Vineyards That Offer Exceptional Wine Tasting Tours

Fancy visiting some of the best vineyards in England this year? Since wine tasting in France and Italy are pretty much off the cards for 2021, let us introduce you to 7 luxury wine tasting tours you can book right here in the UK. Explore the complexity, delicate flavors, and top notes of English grapes while learning from the best wine connoisseurs in the country. The perfect staycation idea for those who enjoy a full-bodied red, a crisp and dry white wine, or perhaps a sparkling glass of Nyetimber.

1: Exclusive Experience At The Nyetimber Estate

Book a private wine tasting experience at the Nyetimber Estate. This historic vineyard in West Chiltington in the south of UK, was first mentioned within the Domesday Book in 1086, spans three different sites. Sussex, Hampshire, and Kent each provide perfect chalk soil and plenty of sunshine to yield a healthy harvest of ripe, juicy grapes. The fruit is then picked to produce Nyetimber sparkling wine with fine bubbles and spicy aromas.

During an exclusive experience at Nyetimber Estate, you’ll be treated to world-renowned sparkling wine, with canapes and a four-course paired menu in the White Barn. Created by esteemed Chef Michael Caines MBE, this is certainly a rare opportunity to dine and enjoy the elegant surroundings and exceptional wine pairings. However, this experience is extremely popular, so make sure to sign-up to their email list or risk missing out!

2: A Welsh Wine Tasting Tour

Book a romantic weekend away at the UK’s first Vineyard Hotel. Llanerch Vineyard in the heart of Wales, offers 5-star luxury accommodation, award-winning food, and the opportunity to book a wine tasting tour. The Taste of Cariad experience involves one of the oldest grape-growing estates in Wales, Llanerch.

Enjoy what exceptional flavours the green vines of the Glamorgan Valley has to offer as you test your palate under the guidance of a local Welsh wine expert. Then once merry, take a seat in the stunning on-site restaurant for an intimate dinner for two, before heading to your suite with countryside views of the rolling hills and vineyard estate.

3: Boutique UK Vineyard In Worcestershire

Family-run Astley Vineyard in Worcestershire focuses on producing traditional English white grape varieties such as Bacchus and Cepage Kerner. With a dedicated wine tasting room and on-site shop to take home a bottle or two for a special occasion. Astley Vineyard wine tasting tours are often sold out, but if you’re lucky enough this year, you can book a group wine tasting tour and explore the beauty and flavour of the Severn Valley, once the most northerly vineyard in the world! With only 5 acres to the estate, this is a boutique UK vineyard and an intimate place to enjoy elegant British white wine in the peaceful sleepy countryside.

The ancient woodland nearby provides biodiversity and prevents pests and wildlife from spoiling the crop. So, if you’d like to book a more laid-back and charming Northern wine tasting tour, head to their website and book a rural wine tasting day out for two.

4: Private Wine Tasting Picnic At Giffords Hall

Vineyard in the heart of the Upper Stour Valley. Family-owned, this UK vineyard is set on an ancient glacial riverbed near Long Melford. With ideal sandy clay soil, the valley produces high-quality English grapes that are used to make both sparkling and dry aromatic wines. Dating back 25 years, the vines at Giffords Hall are now in their prime. So, why not book a picnic box filled with smoked salmon and dill pate, fresh bread, butter, a selection of local cheese, or a Gold vineyard tour and dine al fresco with friends or family while tasting your way through their selection of award-winning English wine.

For something to take home, you might also be tempted to try one of their English liqueurs made with 80% fresh fruit and fine high-grade pure vodka.

5: Raise A Glass At 840ft Above Sea Level

Sheveling Wine Estate is the highest set vineyard in England and gives wine loves the unique opportunity to enjoy wine tasting in the heart of Yorkshire. At 840ft above sea level, it is also famous for being the filming location of Last of the Summer Wine. While the height certainly impacts the crop, the vines also withstand sub-zero temperatures and grow on steep and rocky hillsides.

Yet, despite all odds, Sheveling Wine Estate produces exceptional and delicious wine and hosts late afternoon and evening wine tours. Book a two-course lunch with a vineyard tour and wine tasting experience for £65 and learn about the hybrid grape varieties that thrive in this particular part of the country. Gain an insight into the production and process before sampling a selection of home-grown Yorkshire wines. You can also stay in one of seven vineyard retreat apartments at the foot of the vines, which overlook the Peak District National Park.

6: International Award Winning UK Vineyard

Rodington Vineyard in Shropshire is a family-run international award-winning vineyard. Taking advantage of the fertile soil in Shropshire, the family fulfilled their dream to own a vineyard in England and now host wine tasting tours. Having only been open since 2015, Rodington Vineyard has made a name for itself, winning a number of local, national, and international awards such as Best Medium Dry White Wine Trophy and Silver Medal in the International Wine Challenge, thus putting Shropshire on the International wine map.

Book a wine tasting tour at Rodington Vineyard for £25 per person. It’s a wonderful destination for a summer’s day out in Shropshire where you can learn about English wine and sample their local produce.

7: Organic & Biodynamic Wine Tasting

Ancre Hill Vineyard is on a mission to produce British wine that is made to the highest environmental standards possible. With a perfectionist’s attention to detail, this UK vineyard is committed to making biodynamic wines. Visitors can learn about the principles and philosophy behind this unique and eco-friendly approach, as well as taste the range of still and sparkling Welsh wines on offer. South-facing, Ancre Hill Vineyard has 12 hectares of lush vines, which are well-positioned across the Wye Valley. Using traditional processes and organic viticultural practices, this vineyard and winery use the ancient mudstone and sandstone soils to create exceptional wine variations.

Guided wine tours are available twice a day and last one hour. Relaxed and educational, you’ll explore the vineyards, learn about the importance of biodynamic methods of winemaking and then sample organic natural wine. There is even an option to adopt a vine, which is a gift package that includes your name on a plaque on a vine of your choice, lunch at the vineyard, a wine tasting tour, free access to the vineyard, a bottle of Estate wine, and a return trip to join the team to harvest your vine and pick the grapes yourself.

“In wine, there’s truth,” said Pliny the Elder. And, the truth is, wine tasting is one of the most luxurious experiences you could plan for a UK trip. Sitting al fresco in the light of the setting sun – what better backdrop than the English countryside to sample liquid delicacies? As aged bottles are uncorked before your eyes, you’ll pinch yourself, questioning why you never considered wine tasting in the UK before.

The UK is home to more than 500 working vineyards, leaving visitors abundant options when planning a wine tasting experience. England is particularly known for its Pinot Noir, Bacchus, and Chardonnay grape varieties. In Scotland, you will find varieties such as Solaris Rondo and Siegerrebe. The Siegerrebe variety were initially planted by Christopher Trotter at the Chateau Largo vineyard in Fife.

The UK is not commonly associated with wine production. However, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with vineyard options after a bit of research. However, don’t fear; we have curated a list of the crème de la crème of luxurious vineyards to help you choose. Here are Beau Monde Traveler’s six best UK wine tasting experiences.

 1. Chapel Down Winery, Tenterden

For over 20 years, Chapel Down winery has specialised in the production of sparkling, UK-grown wines. Since opening, the winery has also broadened its products to include gins and vodka – perfect for those organising a wine tasting experience for a large group with different tastes.

Chapel Down offers numerous tour packages starting from £25 per person for a two-hour guided tour with tastings. However, to splurge on some extra luxury, we recommend the ‘Chapel Down Deluxe Experience’.

wine tasting tour uk

Experience the instant VIP treatment as you are greeted with the taste of a glass of Chapel Down fizz. With fizz in hand, you sit for a full ‘feast lunch’ at Chapel Down’s prestigious restaurant. Refreshments are taken seriously at Chapel Down, and before you tour the vineyard, you can sip at a warming tea or coffee. After an informative immersion into the vineyard process, you get the benefit of an ‘extended tasting’ guided by an expert sommelier. The experience finishes with a ‘unique Chapel Down Gift for each guest’ – cutting a thoughtful end to a day of indulgence.

While you sample select wines in the purpose-designed tasting room, you get the added luxury of a three-course lunch. And, with a seasonally driven menu, you can expect local, fresh produce in each paired course.

Cairn O’Mohr offers an innovative, refreshing approach to wine production – ideal for those chasing an experience with oomph. Situated between Perth and Dundee, wine enthusiasts visiting Scotland should note the Cairn O’Mohr vineyard.

Welcomed by ‘sparkling wine and gourmet crisps’, enjoy a private introduction to the winery and its creative origins. After initial formalities, guests embark on an educational, guided exploration of both vineyards and processing demonstrations. The experience finishes on a high, with a tasting session of eight wines and local oatcakes and cheeses.

English Vineyard FAQ’s

What is the difference between a winery and a vineyard.

To define these terms simply, a vineyard is generally defined as a plantation or plot of land designated to producing grapes for wine, whilst a winery is the building housing the wine production process. One may exist without the other, with many wineries known to purchase grapes from ‘outside’ or unassociated vineyards.

Chet Valley Vineyard houses both a vineyard and winery on site, working to produce award-winning wines from vine to bottle in a carefully constructed and refined internal process. Our guests may have the pleasure of discovering both our vineyard and winery during our regular tours and tastings. Discover more about our facilities and spaces on the winery page.

Does England produce wine?

Though England (and the United Kingdom in its entirety) is a large consumer of wine, it has previously been known as a minor producer, primarily due to its overarching cooler climate. Despite this previous perception, English wine is a growing sector, with many well-established vineyards across the country, including Chet Valley, Chapel Down, and Three Choirs producing a wide variety of award-winning wines year on year, available for purchase online, on-site, and even in national supermarkets.

Chet Valley, in particular, is placed in an ideal location for grape-growing and wine production, benefitting from some of the warmest and driest summers in the country, alongside a complex and perfectly suited terroir, featuring significant organic content. Combining traditional European techniques with bold infusions, Chet’s winemakers work to mould existing methodologies to the vineyard’s unique climate - resulting in fine, English wine.

Are there vineyards in England?

Though vineyards were once a rarity in England and the United Kingdom, according to WineGB, there are now over 500 working vineyards in the UK, with over half of this selection welcoming visitors in one form or another. Wherever you’re based, from Cumbria to Devon, you’re likely to be near a vineyard producing English wine.

Nestled in the sun-soaked hills of Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, Chet Valley Vineyard delivers both award-winning wines, and an exceptional visitor experience. With a keen focus on quality and sustainability, this well-established location delivers a range of on and off-site visitor activities, including tours, regular events, and virtual tastings.

Are wineries and vineyards the same?

Though vineyards and wineries are not the same, the two facilities often exist on the same site, under the same name, or in connection with each other. To put it simply, a vineyard produces grapes, whilst a winery produces wine.

A vineyard is generally defined as a plantation or plot of land designated to producing grapes for wine, whilst a winery is the building housing the wine production process.

Chet Valley Vineyard houses both a vineyard and winery on site, working to produce award-winning wines from vine to bottle in a carefully constructed and refined internal process. Our guests may have the pleasure of discovering both our vineyard and winery during our regular tours and tastings.

What is the best English vineyard?

Which is the ‘best English vineyard’ generally comes down to a matter of personal preference. With over 500 vineyards in operation across the UK, there’s an offering available for almost everyone, from polished commercial options, to small family businesses. Here at Chet Valley, we like to think that our vineyard offers an option for anyone.

Nestled in the sheltered, sun-soaked fields of Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, Chet Valley’s single estate Vineyard spans over 10 hectares of family-owned land, producing an award-winning range of sparkling and still fine English wine. Our vineyard and winery are family-friendly, and offer a range of popular activities throughout the year, including tours, tastings, harvests, talks, and suppers, alongside the opportunity to rent vines and produce your own wine.

For those unable to attend our activities in South Norfolk, we’ve created a range of safe, virtual offerings, including our virtual wine tasting kits and sessions.

Can you visit vineyards in the UK?

Though vineyard tourism and events, especially in England, are fast growing sectors, proving popular with visitors of all ages, visitor allowances for vineyards in the UK generally come down to decisions made by individual locations. According to WineGB, of the more than 500 operational vineyards in the UK, over half allow visitors in some form.

Vineyards with facilities and activities for visitors, such as Chet Valley Vineyard in Norfolk, often offer on-site tours, tastings, and a variety of open events, such as harvests, talks, and dinners.

What are the best things to do in Norfolk?

Where is my nearest wine tasting event?

Whether you’re located at the boundaries of the English border, the country’s southernmost sands, there’s bound to be a wine tasting event within reach, though, as a result of the ideal soils and climate, many of the UK’s most well-established and popular vineyards and tasting events are concentrated on or near the South East, including East Anglia.

Popular wine tasting locations within England generally include Kent, East Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Shropshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Norfolk, Perthshire, and Yorkshire.

Chet Valley Vineyard, located in the picturesque South Norfolk, are proud to offer both on-site and virtual wine tasting events, allowing wine lovers from across the country to get involved, and experience a guided tasting, led by the site’s head winemaker.

Lovely afternoon touring and learning about the vineyards and tasting the wines with locally produced nibbles. John is an excellent host and passes on technical information easily. A delightful way to celebrate a 60th birthday with a family group and even better being able to cycle through beautiful lanes in the sun to get there .

We had a wonderful day at Chet Valley! We hired the venue for a family party and enjoyed food and wine on the balcony overlooking the beautiful vineyard scenery. We particularly enjoyed the Horatio Rose Brut which was very refreshing on a hot summers day. We had an excellent tour of the vineyard with the owner, John who was very knowledgeable about not only the vines and the wine but also the local area and all things nature related. He was also very good with the children in our party. I’d highly recommend Chet Valley Wine and also Chet Valley as a venue to hire.

Don't be deceived by the sunny photo below! A friend and I joined a Chet Valley vineyard tour earlier this year, and despite pandemic restrictions and a torrential downpour that even included hail at one point, John managed to pull off an engaging and fun event. It would appear nothing can dampen his enthusiasm. 😉 Chet Valley has a surprisingly wide range of wines of good quality. So if you are in or around Norfolk - or want an excuse to be - I highly recommend paying them a visit. (Warning: you will probably want to purchase a few bottles too...)

B ritish wines , once the butt of jokes, are now attracting international acclaim, so it’s the perfect time to discover them on home turf.

France and California may be better associated with vineyard tourism but the UK has its own scene in some of the country’s most beautiful locations. Southeast England, with its chalky soils and mild temperatures, has the highest concentration of vineyards, but you’ll find them as far flung as Yorkshire and Wales. Many are open for tours and tastings, while some have even more unique experiences to tempt visitors.

Bluebell Vineyard Estates, East Sussex

There’s a chance to join the harvest at Bluebell Vineyard this October; get hands-on and help pick the estate’s grapes before a well-earned lunch.

Add a different type of vintage to your visit by riding the steam trains at nearby Bluebell Railway. Great British Wine Tours (which has a handy pick up at Brighton Station) offers this fun combination as a package. The vineyard is also close to Sheffield Park and Garden, a National Trust site famed for its autumn colours.

Cosy 16th-century The Cat Inn , which boasts a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its food, is at West Hoathly. Doubles from £130.

Llanerch Vineyard, Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan

Learn to create new dishes at this Welsh vineyard’s farmhouse cookery school , where workshops are led by TV chef Angela Gray. Upcoming themes include Moroccan, vegetarian, slow cooking and make-and-freeze festive dishes. The site has its own restaurant too, if you’d rather someone else did the honours. Vineyard tours run until the end of October.

Llanerch’s hotel has 37 rooms, some dog-friendly. The “Wine Escape” , with an overnight stay, tour, tasting and dinner for two, costs from £200, November to February.

Chapel Down, Tenterden, Kent

Keep an eagle eye out for the return of Fizz and Falconry at Kent’s Chapel Down, when visitors get to lure the birds of prey that protect the grapes from nibbling animals. Standard guided tours are already back so you can discover more about the wine served at William and Kate’s wedding before enjoying it with lunch in the Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. Cocktail-making masterclasses are among other experiences to look forward to in future months.

Sissinghurst Castle Farmhouse sits within a National Trust site. Doubles, from £145, include afternoon tea and breakfast. Chapel Down packages, adding a private tour and lunch for two, from £480.

Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking, Surrey

At the foot of Box Hill sits this 627-acre estate, which you can explore from aboard the  4x4-pulled sightseeing train. A 50-minute tour takes visitors to the most scenic viewpoints while a recorded commentary explains more about the vine-to-wine process. The transport turns into a festive-themed Santa Express from late November. There are two restaurants on site, with afternoon teas and roasts among the options.

Denbies has its own smart carbon neutral Vineyard Hotel . Doubles from £145.

Furleigh Estate, Salway Ash, Bridport, Dorset

Grab your poles for an expert-guided Nordic walking session among the vines of Dorset’s Furleigh Estate before rewarding yourself for your exertions with a glass of fizz in the tasting room. The walks are among regular events at the vineyard in October and November. In the warmer months, look out for painting sessions among the grapes with a graduate from the Glasgow School of Art.

Foodie bolthole The Ollerod at Beaminster serves fine locally sourced produce. Doubles from £165.

Rathfinny Estate, Alfriston, East Sussex

Once you’ve feasted on the South Downs and sea views from this lofty vineyard, get started on the creative food. Head chef Chris Bailey (a Michelin-star holder at his former venue) has been producing picnics among the vines and, before the full reopening of the Tasting Room restaurant, is planning a harvest experience with game and fish barbecued over dried vine leaves. Look out too for the stargazing sessions often teamed with Rathfinny’s wine tastings.

Wine: Line 'em up

The vineyard’s smart B&B in converted Flint Barns has rooms sleeping up to five. Doubles from £87. A special harvest package will include dinner, a tasting tour and a chance to help with grape picking.

Ryedale Vineyards, Westow, North Yorkshire

A converted shire horse stable at the most northerly commercial vineyard in Britain is a cosy place for a private gathering (within the latest allowed numbers) and hosted wine tasting. Alternatively, hire out the marquee and horsebox bar in the meadow beside the vines. You can also tour the vineyard and picnic while the weather holds and the site is just outside Yorkshire’s ‘food capital’ Malton.

The vineyard’s own 500-year-old beamed farmhouse has two luxurious guest rooms from £95 per night.

Hambledon Vineyard, Waterlooville, Hampshire

Wine and cheese is a classic combination but this vineyard near Portsmouth rings the changes with chocolate and wine pairing sessions . Festive events are in the works, including Christmas wreath making and a picnic tea aboard the estate’s double-decker bus. Special occasion? Your party can also bottle your own sparkling wine. Hambledon is England’s oldest commercial vineyard and the cricket stumps on its logo commemorate the village’s role in the development of the sport.

The cosy Wriggly Tin shepherds’ huts are nearby, all offering kitchenettes and wood-burning stoves. From £90 a night.

Mannings Heath Vineyard, Horsham, West Sussex

Show off at your next party by opening your sparkling wine with a blade. The art of sabrage, traditionally done with a sword, is taught at Mannings Heath vineyard and sister site Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens. There’s further fun to be had by taking a self-drive tour of the vineyard by golf buggy. At Leonardslee’s glorious gardens, you can pair your sabrage demo and wine tasting with afternoon tea in the Michelin-starred restaurant.

A new state-of-the-art spa is among the temptations at nearby country house hotel South Lodge . Doubles from £285. Mannings itself has a four-bed cottage to hire.

Rosemary Vineyard, Ryde, Isle of Wight

Pull up your own campervan or caravan on the edge of the vines and set yourself up for a tranquil stay at this Isle of Wight estate . The pitches are raised to maximise views, which can also be enjoyed from the Vineleaf Café. When you fancy exploring, you can walk or drive to nearby beaches.

There are eight caravan and campervan pitches at Rosemary Vineyard Touring Park from £12 a night or £70 a week. All have electric hook ups and access to shower and toilet facilities.

I had a brilliant day with Wine Tours of Kent! Although I live locally there was so much I didn’t know about vineyards in Kent (including how beautiful they are!) and so I really enjoyed the day! The trip was really well organised and a great, socialable way to learn about the local wine as well as taste it!! I would 100% recommend this tour company and I will be booking again

We had a wonderful day with Wine Tours of Kent. We didn't know much about wine before the tour but now feel so much more knowledgeable and can't wait to book another tour. The vineyards are fascinating and our tour guide Abi took us to a local pub for lunch which was also delicious - and well needed after all the wine we sampled at Chapel down! I would highly recommend this Wine Tours of Kent if you are looking for an interesting and unique way to explore Kent!
