12 Stones (formed in 2000) is an American post-grunge and alternative rock band, best known for their sophomore album Potter's Field, hailing from Mandeville, Louisiana, U.S.

From humble beginnings in Mandeville, Louisiana, 12 Stones, formed of vocalist Paul McCoy, bassist Kevin Door, guitarist Eric Weaver, and drummer Aaron Gainer, was founded in 2000. With most members still in their teenage years, and with fewer than 15 live performances under their belt, 12 Stones recorded a demo and headed to New York City. After performing at a band showcase where multiple labels and industry executives would be, the band signed with Wind-Up Records.

12 Stones’ eponymous debut album was issued by Wind-Up in 2002 and debuted at No. 147 on the Billboard 200. Produced by Jay Baumgardner, the album spawned the singles “Broken”, “The Way I Feel”, and “Crash”, the former of which has been used as the theme song for WWE. Not long after the release, vocalist McCoy contributed vocals to the Evanescence smash hit “Bring Me to Life”, which won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

The band’s sophomore album “Potter’s Field” appeared in 2004 and marked a change in sounds towards a more guitar-driven crunch. Aided by McCoy’s exposure from the Evanescence single, “Potter’s Field” became 12 Stones’ highest charting album, debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard 200. After the release the band took a break to focus on their families, however returned with the 2007 album “Anthems for the Underdog” in response to the deadly Hurricane Katrina that affected their hometown. The album was the first to include new member by Justin Rimer, was produced by Skidd Mills and encompasses feelings of helplessness experienced by victims of the hurricane.

“Beneath the Scars” followed in 2012 once again produced by Skidd Mills. The album earned favourable reviews from the musical press and spawned the singles “Bulletproof”, “Worlds Collide”, and “Infected”.

Live reviews

12 Stones are one of those alternative rock bands that dominated the airwaves from the early 00’s which their drawling grunge sound complete with overdriven guitar riffs creating mammoth walls of sound complete with huge hooks for melodies, that anyone to encounter them would be singing for days. This performance tonight is a force to be reckoned with, which patrons having been queuing for almost three hours just to get the front spot right at the barriers of this gig. “Photography” kicks off their high octane set, which sees the entire audience dancing and throwing their arms around, extremely excited for this even. “The Way I Feel” is an early sing-along that everyone joins in with, the chorus being so very epic and memorable. The only thing that I won’t give to 12 Stones is their darn song titles. We’ve heard them all before. “Far Away” & “Photograph”. Sound familiar?! Even “Broken Road”. Come on 12 Stones, be a little more creative with your writing. I don’t think my opinion affects the audience this evening who see m to be lapping up this amazing atmosphere.

Louisiana outfit 12 Stones rode the wave of the post-grunge revival in the late 90s/early 00s and found their angsty, relatable lyrics on many of the major radio stations and quickly gaining a fanbase who felt they could relate and empathise with the music and the four musicians onstage.

Paul McCoy was originally featured on the phenomenally successful Evanescence track 'Bring Me To Life' and although there is no surprise cover of that this evening, there is a strong setlist consisting of the very best selection of the band's albums. The fans remain consistently devoted, despite their commercial success having depleted rather dramatically since the first couple of albums they continue to sing every single track with the same level of determination and excitement. Paul thanks them profusely before his band goes about tearing through the punk inspired riffs for the last two tracks 'Lie To Me' and 'Bury Me'. The cheers and feet stomping is momentous in order to bring out the boys for a final performance of 'Broken'.

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Rolling Stones are hitting stadiums across North America in 2024 to celebrate the release of their new album, Hackney Diamonds . The 16-city tour (which includes a headlining slot at Jazz Fest in New Orleans) kicks off April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, and wraps up July 17 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Hackney Diamonds is the first Rolling Stones album of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang . Produced by Andrew Watt and featuring guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Lady Gaga, the album was met with near-universal acclaim. “A collection of bangers (old-school division) that nobody in their right mind had a right to expect in 2023,” Rolling Stone ’s David Browne wrote, “Hackney Diamonds isn’t just another new Stones album, but a vibrant and cohesive record — the first Stones album in ages you’ll want to crank more than once before filing away.”

12 Stones Singer Paul McCoy Talks ‘Beneath the Scars’, Surviving a Decade as a Band + More

It’s been ten years since 12 Stones self-titled debut record and the band has released their fourth studio album ‘Beneath the Scars’ earlier this year. Not to mention the group of Louisiana-based rockers are currently on tour with with Cleveland based band Concordia and also has a one-off date with Smile Empty Soul. For a full list of dates, go here .

When we got the opportunity to chat with 12 Stones frontman Paul McCoy he spoke all about what’s ‘Beneath the Scars,’ and the recording process of the album as well as the secret to the band’s longevity and he also offers a brief look back on recording the Evanescence hit ‘Bring Me to Life’ where he sang as guest vocalist.

The most recent album ‘Beneath the Scars’ what does this title mean to you?

Yeah it represents the last few years and what we’ve gone through and who we are and what lies beneath.

’Beneath the Scars’ is the band’s first record not being released on Wind-Up. What was the recording process like and the experience of working with Executive Music Group?

It was good, it was out first time doing a record with those guys so anytime there’s a new experience it’s definitely an eye opener, trying to figure out what’s going on with everything. It’s been good so far. The recording process was easy because we worked with Skidd Mills again so we definitely knew a lot about what we were going to get into with him.

I read that the album's next single will be the track ‘The One Thing’ is this correct?

I think so.

Could you talk about this song musically and lyrically.

The music for that song I had for a long time in my archives, lyrically it’s about how no matter what goes on, we don’t make any money doing this but we love that experience of being onstage and picking up and playing shows.

Speaking of shows, you guys are on a huge U.S. tour this summer, what is one thing you must bring on tour with you, no electronics?

I always got to have my laptop with me.

No electronics on this one.

Oh, no electronics. I don’t know. [Laughs] We always bring a football and throw that around. And our drummer says you always have to have flushable baby wipes.

If you could tour with any band that you haven’t with yet, who would it be?

Probably Karnivool. We haven’t toured with them yet, we’ve toured with just about every American band in the last decade so there’s not too many we haven’t toured with.

It has been 10 years since the self-titled debut was released and 12 Stones continue to persevere in an industry that is pretty tough these days; what’s your secret to your longevity, what keeps you guys going?

The secret’s laughin’. You just have to laugh at the way things are, try to make jokes and keep each other smiling. Other than that there’s not much to smile about. Out here you just have to keep each other goin’, we feed off of each other’s energy. We’re surviving and laughing the whole way through.

Where do you see 12 Stones in the next 10 years?

Hopefully doing another interview with you. [Laughs] It’s where we’re gonna be, doing the same thing, until I can’t talk or our hands fall off.

We recently did a list of the Top 50 songs of the 21st century and ‘Bring Me To Life’ came in the top three. Looking back on it, wondering if you share some recollection on recording that song.

Yeah, it was actually a very quick process. I found out I was gonna be on the song and flew in the same day to L.A., it took about two hours and I flew back out. Then a few months later when the album came out it blew up and nobody knew it was gonna happen at that point.

If you could collaborate with any musician that you haven’t gotten a chance to work with yet, who would it be?

I don’t’ know, I’ve always wanted to work with Slash . ‘Apocalyptic Love’ is really good, Myles Kennedy is a monster so anything he’s a part of I’m a fan of for sure.

'I'm going to bust a gut and do it': Dolly Parton dug deep to become a 'Rockstar'

The Stones – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – are basking in a bit of a studio revival with “Hackney Diamonds,” their first new album since 2005 .

The album debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart, making them the first act with a top 10 album each decade since the 1960s.

The single, “Angry,” is nominated for best rock song at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4. (The band has three career wins .)

“Hackney Diamonds” is also the Stones’ first album since drummer Charlie Watts died in 2021.

The band premiered songs from the album at an intimate, invitation-only show of a few hundred people at the Racket NYC club in October, running through a handful of visceral new tracks and leaning into classics including “Shattered” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” with youthful vigor. Lady Gaga, who sings on the album track “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” joined Jagger for a thunderous duet.
