Half a grand is a lot of money for a lot of people - and luckily it can get you a lot of bike. There's a huge range to choose from at this price, from commuting cycles to long-distance tourers, but if you're looking for something a little lighter and sportier you'll be pleased to know that for around £500 you can buy a machine that'll easily cope with distance rides such as sportives, as well as your day to day cycling, with a good dose of style thrown in.

The Trek SL1000, was a winner in Cycling Plus' 2006 budget race bikes of the year. >

Frame >The Trek frame is based on 7005 series aluminium tubing with butted main tubes and is 1,551g in the 56cm size tested. The welding is plain without any smoothing of the joins, and the paint and decals are an improvement on the previous year's model. We like the neatly executed mudguard bridge detailing between the chainstays.

The distinctive and unusual forward-sloping top-tube (it's higher at the seatpost) is an aspect of the 1000-1500 series that you'll either like or loathe, but the short head-tube enables a low riding position for time trialling that simply isn't possible on the Specialized with its taller head-tube. The handlebar height can be altered considerably by flipping the stem through 180 degrees to point upwards, and further adjustments can be effected in small increments by using the headset spacers provided. The inclusion of rack and mudguard eyes is a major plus point as far as versatility for commuting and general cycling is concerned, meaning that this frame is a good all-rounder.

> Equipment >Given that the £500 price point is largely focused on those who are just getting into their cycling, it is appropriate that Trek have specified the SL1000 with a triple chainset, because the range of gears this provides is more important than the small weight saving of a double chainset. The anatomic 'pistol grip' handlebars have a slightly deeper and lower bend than those of the Specialized, and the radically sloping stem provides a greater than average range of handlebar height settings, though it doesn't win points for style. The Shimano Sora levers work well with your hands rested on the hoods, but it's a long reach to the brake hood button levers when your hands are on the drops.

Trek have retained the tried and trusted Bontrager Select tyres that are probably the best budget tyre we have come across for vertical compliance, and they grip tenaciously in the wet. Their slightly larger 25mm width means they are more resistant to pinch punctures than 23mm tyres, but they'll need to be changed for a 23mm tyre if mudguards are to be fitted to provide enough clearance.

The Trek's butted tubes make for a lively performance out on the road and were it not for the weight of the components, this could easily be confused with a bike costing twice the price. There really is very little to criticise when ridden on the flat, but at a shade under 21lb its bulk, which is mainly centred on the wheels, makes it harder for the rider to change tempo on a climb. That said, the fun and lively nature of the ride makes you want to take the long way home on a warm balmy summer evening.

Though odd looking, the system of using spacers stacked to give the greatest handlebar height didn't cause our testers any worries, and the time triallists will warm to the fact that the spacers can be omitted completely to get a low, aerodynamic riding position. > > Verdict

Comfortable seat. Comfortable handlebar position, nice retro styling. Easy to pedal. Great commuter bicycle. My last bike was a Walmart piece of junk bike and this bike is leaps and bounds way better. Responsive and effective brakes. Bakersfield Pro Concrete Pumping

This was my brother's first training bike when he began racing. It was handed off to me and I used it as a commuter class in Syracuse NY, commuting every day of the winter, snow and all. The chain regularly dripped rust when it thawed inside my apartment despite my best efforts to keep it lubed. Headset bearings totally rusted out twice and replaced. It then turned into my off road bike with 30mm knobby tires, getting battered over rough roads in Colorado like Engineer pass. This bike can handle anything and I love it. Original derailers, shifters, and brakes are still working like a charm and I can't remember the last time I adjusted anything! Orange paint scheme is a classic.

Not going to win any bike races as it's a cheaper aluminum frame.

Not a light weight performance bike, but it is a solid bike. I've had mine for over 25 years and who knows how many miles. I've taken it out of town on centuries and ridden the mountains with it. It doesn't have the original components anymore having been upgraded about 20 years ago from Sun Tour to Shimano RSX. I'm on my 4th saddle and probably my 3rd set of wheels. The frame is still rolling though. I would rate it and the Specialized Allez as the 2 best bikes for those starting out in road cycling.

The components are not top of the line or even close and the bike is heavy. You're not going to be doing many races on this bike. But I bought this bike for under $400 new so I didn't expect a bike that would be used in the Tour de France.

It is nice and light! I bought it used but it's lighter than my Cannondale.

I don't like the where the shifters are located. I'd rather have them by the handlebars.

I really like it though and think I will get used to the shifters.

Amazing frameset - strong and durable, still competitive with new tech alu bikes

A little heavy (8.3 kg with Easton EC90 cockpit, Quattros and 6800 Ultegra)

(I am Polish so sorry for my mistakes) I had many carbon bikes but i still got this one since 2007. In 2009 i equipped this frame with 7700 Dura Ace groupset and mavic wheels. Right now i still ride this bike but with Fulcrum Quattro LG and 6800 Ultegra. The geometry is amazing. Frame is stiff so still the bike is competitive in sprints in local races. The ride quality is OK, but mostly due to my upgrades (Easton EC90 handlebar, steam and seatpost and 25mm tires on wide rims) After all this years i decided to sell all other (newer and lighter) carbon road bikes, because this is The ONE :D Tottaly worth its price back then.

First Road Bike, bought in 2005. Still going strong, 2014... Just routine maintenance. Left a review here years ago.

Wheelset, changed out to supergo years ago and been fine ever since. Great first road bike.

I believe the model now is a Trek 1.1...Great buy, reliable. No its not carbon, hence you don't have to baby it...

frame and geometry are great, solid, no flexing, fits perfect, rather light weight. The group on it was Sora Tiegra. I took it all off and put Shimano 105 group, 9 speed, triple, Campanolo Record chain, upgraded the rims to Rigida racing 2000, with 105 hubs, Union - BMW spokes. The bike rides like a dream. I like riding it better than my Carbon Trek 5200, but the 5200 has Campanolo Chorus Gruppo, which is flawless- like a Mercedes compared to the 105, which is like a sewing machine. This is an excellent frame and fork, the the Crane Creek headset on mine is outstanding

Not as light as carbon. Low cost of this bike makes it unlikely to get high end components. Trek seems to provide better than average frames and lower than average (for the money) components, so more than likely you will want to upgrade as much as possible.

Great bike for the money. Solid, dependable, great to ride long distances, I ride 50 miles each Sunday.

Of course, on CL everything was ridden once in a parking lot for 5 minutes then garaged for years or something right? Anyway, asking $500 OBO. I haven't been to look at the bike. Looks like a $690 original MSRP, which probably means it went for like 600 or a bit less at a shop. Thoughts? Fair price for me to offer? Am I wrong or does $500 seem steep? Thanks as always. Eventually I'll buy a road bike and stop posting threads.

Even with low miles, that is steep. I would not pay more than 50% of original retail on a bike that old, even in great condition.  

Well, apparently they dont want to go under 400, I just offered 350. Claiming excellent condition. I don't feel like driving an hour to see it and check the fit so I might just let this one go.

Even if the bike was in excellent condition, IMO your offer was a good one. Don't fret over posting about bikes of interest. Better to be slow at this purchase and get it right than be quiick and get it wrong. Just stay focused on your intended uses, sizing and fit and you'll do fine.  

Well, still working with this one. Seller claiming its like new in most respects (except those frame scratches I guess) and going to get some better more close up pics and maybe meet me halfway to take a look. Thanks for the replies.

Stick to your guns. Assuming the fit is right and the bike's in as good a shape as advertised, your offer of $350 is a fair one.  

I paid 200 for my 2003 2 years ago if that helps your reference point at all.

    This classic Trek SL1000 road bike was built with lightweight Alpha aluminum frame tubes, paired up with a carbon fiber fork, & has been tuned up for another round out on the road. Shimano Sora integrated shifters & Shimano brakes, with Shimano derailleurs, Tiagra in the rear. Bontrager triple cranks with 8 cogs out back for plenty of gear options.
