Aberdeen Art Gallery
Aberdeen is known for its extensive attractions, including the Maritime Museum and Duthie Park. For lovers of art arriving in the Highlands, the Aberdeen Art Gallery is a necessary addition to your to-do list and stands as one of the finest art galleries in Scotland. From local artists to famed international works, there’s no better way to spend a day than to explore this institution’s numerous galleries.
The Aberdeen Art Gallery opened in 1884 in a building designed by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie and was later expanded in the 1920s. However, the Gallery as you know it today emerged between 2015 and 2019 when it went under a landmark redevelopment that the Aberdeen City Council and National Lottery Heritage Fund brought about. Its success as the home for some of Scotland’s finest works was celebrated when, in 2020, the Aberdeen Art Gallery won the Art Fund Museum of the Year.
If you plan to explore one of the finest collections in the ‘Granite City’, stick around! We’ll cover all the details you need, how to get there, and the top attractions to look forward to during your visit.

How to Get There
Here are the most popular ways to reach the Aberdeen Art Gallery, using private and public transportation options.
For those travelling by car and arriving in Aberdeen via the A92, drive down the River Dee along Riverside Drive. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto College Street. Then take a right on Wapping Street and then left onto Denburn Road. Finally, take the Rosemount Viaduct onto Schoolhill, and the Aberdeen Art Gallery should be on your left.
Those planning to visit Aberdeen Art Gallery while within the city should consider the abundant bus services available. Some services stop by Union Street, which is one of the closest bus stations to the Aberdeen Art Gallery — take a short walk down Belmont Street.
Other close bus stations are His Majesty’s Theatre, Blackfriars Street, and Schoolhill.
Aberdeen Art Gallery Attractions
Now that you’re informed about how to reach the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the essential details about the Gallery, you can look forward to seeing an internationally celebrated collection of artworks. If you’re in a hurry or want to see the highlights, here are the highlights:
Explore Aberdeen Art Gallery
The highlight of the Aberdeen Art Gallery is undoubtedly the staggering range of art and sculptures throughout the decorated halls of the building. Visitors are genuinely spoiled for choice as they enter through arched doorways and marble floors for sights to see.
The collection at Aberdeen Art spans over 700 years of history. It features crucial works by Scottish artists, designers, and makers like Joan Eardley, Rachel McLean, and James Cromar Watt and internationally recognised ones like Barbara Hepworth, Tracey Emin, and Claude Monet!
The galleries present a variety of styles, from French impressions to abstract, for you to discover during your visit. Look at the best and most exciting artworks through hallways of galleries, and admire the care for these treasures on behalf of the people who spent such a long time working on them.
Start at the Sculpture Court
As you enter the Aberdeen Art Gallery, the Sculpture Court is your first artistic journey stop. Kenny Hunter opened this welcoming exhibition, which features a selection of delicately sculpted objects and animals, including a massive elephant, campfires, and even a girl riding a horse.
It’s easy to be swept away by the grandiosity of the sculptures here, with the original architect describing it: “I’m presenting this group of artworks here against the magnificent backdrop of Aberdeen Art Gallery’s classically-inspired Sculpture Court as ambiguous and open to varied interpretation.”
The Court is locally loved, so ensure you spend some time admiring the display before moving on.
View their Rotating Temporary Exhibitions
No matter when you come to the Aberdeen Art Gallery, the exhibitions on display will always be slightly different than your last visit. The art gallery is home to a rotating set of temporary exhibits from local and international artists and has included prized art words like “Shadows and Light – The Extraordinary Life of JamesMcBey” and the contemporary “Marching Gallery”.
For a peek into the great art that allows local people of Aberdeen to share their stories, the temporary displays are flash-in-the-pan moments that you can’t miss at any cost.
Indulge in Art — Abstract and Contemporary
As you make your way up to the first floor of the Aberdeen Art Gallery, you’ll be met with several interesting contemporary artworks, mind-bending abstract pieces, and Scotland shown off in a unique neo-classical style.
On the first floor, you can also see the French Impressions exhibitions, which highlight a unique period when French culture and art were at the centre of the world stage. The Aberdeen Art Gallery combines these French works with examples of British art pieces. These special exhibitions are the backbone of the Aberdeen Art Gallery and should not be missed any more, making the museum’s exhibitions their priority.
Admire Scottish Colourists
Speaking of French impressions, the Scottish Colourists were given an extremely positive impression of French culture during the late 20th century, and their art shows this.
The Scottish Colourists are considered to be Samuel John Peploe, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, George Leslie Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson. Inspired by the carefree art of the French, they created stunning art that can be seen at the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Explore Remembrance Hall
In contrast to the flood of emotions you may experience wandering the Aberdeen Art Gallery, the Remembrance Hall usually has a sombre tone. The Hall was originally opened by King George in 1925 when the building was expanded and commemorates the lives lost during the First World War.
Today, Gordon Burnett’s “Forget Me Not” exhibition within the Remembrance Hall is the artistic complement to this melancholic part of the Gallery. It’s recommended you spend a moment and reflect on your losses and how they are still in your memory within the Remembrance Hall of the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Cap Off Your Visit At the Cafe
Once you’ve thoroughly explored Aberdeen Art Gallery’s three distinctive floors, why not treat yourself to a hot cappuccino and a sandwich to collect your thoughts and think about your opinions of the Gallery? The Cafe offers a wide range of food and drink, including soups, macaroni and cheese, afternoon tea, and even a brunch menu if you visit as the Gallery is opening.
Don’t hit your next location on an empty stomach; the Aberdeen Art Gallery awaits!
Pick up a Souvenir at the Gift Shop
But wait, before you leave, make sure to peruse through the souvenir shop located on the second floor next to the Cafe. Here, you can find a fascinating collection of items inspired by the artworks at the Aberdeen Art Gallery — they serve as the perfect gift or mantlepiece to take home with you. Make sure they fit in your suitcase.

- Art lovers can stay at home and enjoy Aberdeen Art Gallery thanks to new app
Virtual visitors to Aberdeen Art Gallery can enjoy 50 highlights from the collection on a digital tour which was launched on Friday 17 April. This is thanks to an award-winning social enterprise that helps people make meaningful connections with art. The Smartify app is an art guide that identifies 2D and 3D artworks in participating venues. Normally, on-site visitors can scan an artwork with their smartphone and the app provides instant information on it. However, for off-site visitors during the pandemic, Smartify’s powerful search facility uses location and personal preferences to offer users thoughtfully curated stories and tours which is what is being offered by Aberdeen Art Gallery.
The Discover Aberdeen Art Gallery tour includes images and descriptions of 50 artworks, with audio descriptions by staff for selected works, providing accessible and informal insights into many aspects of the varied collection, including drawings, paintings, sculpture, decorative art and jewellery. Artworks featured in the tour include the fascinating Macdonald collection of artists portraits with audio by Madeline Ward, Lead Curator of Art; and High Tide, A Winter Afternoon , painted at Catterline by Joan Eardley, in 1958, with an audio by Ruth Kent, Performance and Events Officer.
An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson said,
“Aberdeen Art Gallery had been due to introduce a new regular tour for visitors in April, called Discover Aberdeen Art Gallery. It’s fantastic that the team has been able to respond to the Covid-19 situation and find a new way of delivering this activity for people in Aberdeen and across the world.
“Anyone with the Smartify app will be able to experience the highlights of Aberdeen’s exceptional art collection from the comfort and safety of their owns homes. More than ever, the experience and enjoyment of art can play an important part in maintaining our wellbeing.”
The National Lottery Heritage Fund invested £10million in the recent transformation of Aberdeen Art Gallery. The Fund’s Scotland Director, Caroline Clark, said:
“With visitors figures before the pandemic surpassing all expectations, it is clear that people are eager to see the incredible works of art that Aberdeen Art Gallery houses. Well done to the team for keeping the doors to their outstanding national collection open through Smartify. These virtual tours are a wonderful way of exploring the world of art while staying safely at home.”

Here are all the exhibitions coming to Aberdeen Art Gallery in 2023
2023 promises to be another fantastic year of events and showcases for the Art Gallery, with a large focus being placed on north-east artists and local craftsmen.
- 12:17, 1 JAN 2023
Aberdeen Art Gallery is once again offering a whole host of new exhibitions for 2023.
Since its grand reopening in 2019, the gallery has been successfully showcasing some of Scotland's most thought-provoking artistic displays.
And 2023 promises to be another fantastic year of events and showcases, with a large focus being placed on north-east artists and local craftsmen, such as the "heir to Rembrandt" James McBey, as well as Lennox Dunbar, Ian Howard and Arthur Watson.

The works of the ever-talented Quentin Blake will also go on display in July as part of the "Illustrating Verse" exhibition, while the works of photographers from the celebrated Magnum agency will be displayed in April.
Without further ado, here are some of the most exciting exhibitions coming to Aberdeen Art Gallery this year:
Shadows and Light – The Extraordinary Life of James McBey (February 11 – May 28 2023)
Aberdeenshire-born artist and adventurer James McBey (1883-1959) was noted for his etchings and dry point engravings, and was once described as the “heir to Rembrandt”. This small-scale exhibition is curated by author Alasdair Soussi to coincide with his recently-published biography of McBey.
The author’s research drew on the unparalleled archive of the artist’s personal collection of artworks, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, diaries and letters in the Archives, Gallery & Museums’ collection, a selection of which are on display here. Alasdair Soussi will give a talk at Aberdeen Art Gallery on Saturday April 15 2023.
Travelling Gallery (March 2023)
The contemporary gallery in a bus is parking up in Aberdeen with a new two-person exhibition by artist Emmie McLuskey and choreographer Janice Parker which explores movement, bringing dance and people together in different ways and artforms. Look out for Travelling Gallery in locations across the city in March.
The Testament of Alexander Jaffray (March 4 – September 3 2023)
2023 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Alexander Jaffray, twice provost of Aberdeen and representative of the burgh in the Scottish Parliament. This prominent member of the community later became a Quaker, at a time when doing so would certainly mean persecution. This exhibition uses the manuscript of Jaffray’s last testament, acquired by Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives in 2022, as the starting point for a closer look at the man himself and the persecution endured by Quakers at the hands of the burgh authorities in 17th-century Aberdeen.
Where Ideas Are Born – an exhibition by Magnum Photos (April 1 – June 11 2023)
This exhibition brings together works by over 20 photographers from the celebrated Magnum agency, including Inge Morath, Eve Arnold and Robert Capa. Around 70 photo portraits of internationally renowned artists capture the moment in their studios when the spark of creativity leaps over and ideas are born. Artists such as Andy Warhol, George O’Keefe, Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama are all be seen in their creative environments.
Making a Splash! A Century of Women’s Beachwear (June 10 2023 – 14 January 2024)
Seaside fashions have been influenced by social and political change, the Hollywood film industry and innovations in design and materials. This exhibition showcases bathing costumes and other highlights from the Archives, Gallery & Museums’ collection of 20th century beachwear.
Quentin Blake – Illustrating Verse and Book Covers (July 8 – September 17 2023)
Two exhibitions under one roof as the Art Gallery features the unique talent of Quentin Blake, the UK’s best-loved illustrator, who has just celebrated his 90th birthday. Illustrating Verse brings together for the first time a selection Blake’s sketches and illustrations for a range of poetry, from comic nonsense poems to poignant ballads by writers including William Shakespeare, Edward Lear, Michael Rosen and Roald Dahl, as well as Blake’s own popular rhyming picture book Mr Magnolia.
Constructed Narratives: Lennox Dunbar, Ian Howard, Arthur Watson (October 14 2023 – January 28 2024)
This exhibition brings together three of Scotland’s foremost artists – Lennox Dunbar, Ian Howard and Arthur Watson. The Aberdeen-born contemporaries were educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, where art teacher Charles Hemingway encouraged them to spend time with the outstanding collection of contemporary art at Aberdeen Art Gallery. The artists went on to hold significant roles in Scotland’s art schools and all three have key early works in the Aberdeen Art Gallery collection, which are displayed here along with more recent pieces. Over their careers Dunbar, Howard and Watson have exhibited extensively across Europe, the United States and Asia, both together and as solo artists.
