Albanian Highlights Private 7 days tour- From South to North
It's so hard to pick just one thing, so I'm going to choose two. Firstly - the stunning landscapes and wild mountain roads. Secondly - the friendly and open people (the generally negative image held in the UK of Albania and its people couldn't be any further from the truth).
Cycle Tour In Albania - UNESCO 10 Day Tour
We had a truly brilliant time with Cycle Albania. The country blew us away with its wild beauty, majestic mountains, and warm-hearted, kind people. Erlis, our guide, was fantastic. He was encouraging, informative and dealt with all our varying abilities so well. Likewise Dhani, the van driver/bike fixer/snack provider was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The tour was varied, fascinating and challenging in just the right way. The choice of accommodation delighted, from mountain farm to beachside hotel...and wherever we went the food was out of this world. It was an unforgettable 8 days in the saddle...a bike is the perfect way to explore this wonderful country.

Pearls of Albania tour in eight days (3 UNESCO sites)
It has been a great tour. Perfectly organized and ideally fulfilled. Many thanks!
Albania Explorer “Illyria Route”
I undertook this tour in April, out of season, but with wonderful hot sunny weather on most days. This meant that in many of the places we stayed, some of the restaurants were closed, but the advantage was that there no crowds. The tour was an excellent introduction to this fascinating country and its complicated history. Throughout the tour was very well organised and our guide Edmund was excellent - very knowledgeable and with a great personality and sense of humour. He provided the perfect balance of guided tours of the sites and free time. The tour covers quite a distance, but the coach was comfortable with plenty of space, and our driver was really excellent. The hotels used were clean and comfortable but overall the breakfasts were average. In a country where there is so much fresh fruit it was a pity not to see more of this prepared for the breakfast buffet. There was a good mixture of visits to sites of historical interest and those of natural beauty. Some, such as the amphitheatre in Durres were a little underwhelming, but others - Berat, Apollonia, Butrint and Gjirokaster were truly magnificent. I only regret that I didn't take the longer tour that included Lake Ohrid. In short, this was an excellent introduction to a country with a fascinating history, beautiful scenery and very friendly people. I look forward to returning in the future to explore more of the delights of Albania.

Peaks of the Balkans Tour: Theth, Valbona & Koman Lake in 5 days
One of the best trips. This was an amazing tour- incredible scenery, friendly local people, mountain food such as cheese and home baked bread. We had such a pleasure hiking and climbing together. Our tour guide was extremely friendly and helpful. I will strongly recommend this tour.
Classical tour of Albania
We had a great 10 days in Albania and Kosovo visiting archaeology, historical, religious and cultural sites. Ervin was an excellent host and superb driver and tour leader. The sites were far more interesting than we even expected, the local guides knowledgeable, and the whole experience really exceptional. From the initial contact with Jenka and Xhensila to our time in the country sight seeing, we were impressed with the quality and professionalism of the tour. Thank you Ervin for keeping us safe and welcoming us so warmly to your beautiful country!

Cycling in Albania
Albania is a beautiful country, Cycle Albania was super! I would recommend this trip to others.
Hidden Valley Trek: Homestay Trekking & Southern Albania's Cultural Highlights (8 days)
Highly enjoyable trip with a strong sense of being well away from the more popular areas and seeing something of a hidden Albania. People were incredibly hospitable and the walking wasn't too strenuous. Highly recommended.
A week in Albania: Tirana to Saranda
This was an amazing tour! Anyone visiting Albania should take the time to venture solo to soak up all of the scenery and to enjoy the local food. Good Albania tailored an itenerary for my needs, handled the accomodations and rental car. They were very attentive and made haste with their responses. I highly recommend this tour company.
Self Drive: Albania North to South
Great staff at Good Albania! I do believe the cars need professional checks and regular maintenance but with any issues we had the staff was willing and quick to respond with local help while we were travelling. The hotel staff almost everywhere was nice and the hotel quality varied in terms of the actual rooms, sometimes awesome sometimes mediocre. Good breakfasts daily.
What people love about Albania Tours
VATO was really good. My sister and i went to Albania during off season and it was quite hard for us to get a tour company that could accommodate us especially that we were only 2 people. Isuf from VATO responded really quickly when we messaged through TourRadar and was able to make amendments to the main itinerary to suit our needs and preference. We literally contacted him on Friday afternoon, he rovided additional info, sorted all the changes and quotes by Saturday morning and we were on the tour getting picked up from the airport on Sunday morning, we really appreciated the efficiency and reliance we could place on the company. We did a 7 day tour round South albania - we took the 6 day tour but asked to add the blue eye and additional day to visit the Benja thermal baths. Our tour guide Olsi was really great. He was knowledgeable about the places we visited being able to give us more thorough information beyond the texts we see in the museums and was good in providing us an insight in the current life in Albania. It was a really nice experience. Olsi was also from Berat itself and gave us a really special experience in Berat, bringing us to local areas for good food (he had chef training previously and therefore a fellow foodie himself) and also to a really nice local place for raki where the a couple operated from their house itself and came out to sit and talk with us too while we were there. It was really nice. Olsi also isn't pushy with timelines etc, he allows us to go at our own pace but gives us the best experiences/opportunities with the time that he has - like if we left a little late from a place on our own account, he would try his best to adjust the schedule to see what we can best see with the time and daylight we have (given its near winter and daylight was short) - be weather it was racing round catch a sunset or swapping round activities to accommodate the weather etc. Overall a very enjoyable experience and given the circumstanceswe were in, Olsi and VATO did a really great job and we really appreciate that. Thanks.
Zeni made this trip into the history, culture and cuisine of Albania unbelievably precious. He gave us a gift that we will always treasure. Thank you, Zeni ? Unbelievably special ?
Well organized trip through beautiful and challenging conditions and climbs

Good evening
"Albania has the spectacular landscapes and incredible history and culture to rival any Mediterranean country in Europe. After being buried in communism for so long, it's now open for all, and there's never been a better time to visit this wonderful country. But hurry - this secret won't be kept for much longer."
Travel Director
See the Palace of Culture in Tirana
The Palace of Culture in Tirana really lives up to its name. It's a grand building where you’ll find cultural institutions like the National Library and the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. The first stone of this stunning building was symbolically laid by former Soviet president Nikita Hrushov in 1959 and your Albania travel guide will show you around the highlights of this cultural treasure.
Stroll through Skanderbeg Square
Of all the top Albania attractions, you can’t miss checking out Skanderberg Square, the main square in Tirana. It’s massive at over 430,000 square feet and you’ll find some of the country’s most important buildings here including the National Museum of History, the Clock Tower and the giant Skanderberg Monument of the Albanian national hero.
See Tirana's famous Clock Tower
The 114-foot tall Clock Tower is an unmissable stop on any Tirana tour, and we’ll take you to see this famous piece of Ottoman architecture dating back to 1822. After hearing the bells ring out, you can even climb the spiral staircase to take in the spectacular views over Tirana. Be sure to come back in the evening to see the tower beautifully lit up after dark.
Walk through the winding streets of Tirana city center
One of the best parts of your Tirana trip will be roaming the colorful streets of the city, where brightly painted façades mingle with leafy streets and shopping strips. You’ll join a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour, before having time to delve into the trendy café districts and vibrant markets where you’ll find some real Albanian arts and crafts.
Learn about the decades of communist rule in Albania
When you travel Albania with Trafalgar, we'll dive into the rich history of the country. You’ll learn how Albania was once ruled by a communist regime and see the remnants of this tyrannical period. Stop by former Communist buildings, visit the Bunk’Art museum, and wander through the Blloku district, once reserved for the communist elite.
Our top 5 things to do in Albania
Our Albania trips will show you all the best things to do in Albania, from the top Tirana attractions to the historical gems of the country.
National Historic Museum
The National Historic Museum is the best Albania museum to explore the country’s complex history. There are thousands of objects, ranging from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages to the 21st century. There’s a pavilion dedicated to the crimes of the communist regime, and don’t miss the Beauty of Durrës, a treasured mosaic from the 4th century BC.
House of Leaves
Also known as the Museum of Secret Surveillance, this excellent museum is located in the former headquarters of the Sigurimi, the secret Albanian police, and the German Gestapo. Used as an interrogation and torture house, you can see old surveillance items and learn the stories of those who were spied on and executed during the communist regime.
Bunk'Art
You can’t miss this fantastic museum on your Albania tour. It’s a massive underground anti-nuclear bunker constructed for the country’s communist politicians and military elite. Spread out over five stories and over 100 rooms, including a 200-seat meeting hall, you'll marvel at the architecture and learn more about Albania’s tragic communist history.
Best museums in Albania
Tirana’s museums are some of the best places to visit in Albania and we’ll show you all the historic highlights like the giant underground bunker and a former secret police headquarters.
The most popular food in Albania, byrek is a baked or fried pastry made with flaky, thin dough. It’s stuffed with all kinds of tasty fillings and the favorite is spinach and feta cheese, or you can also find ones with meat or pumpkin. Keep your eyes peeled for the street vendors selling this treat, as it’s sure to become your go-to Albanian snack.
If you’re looking for some real Albanian comfort food, you can’t go past tavë kosi, the heartwarming national dish. It’s made with tender chunks of lamb stirred with rice, garlic and oregano, and covered with a mixture of yoghurt and egg. With a sprinkle of fresh nutmeg, it’s then baked until it forms a golden, creamy crust - and it’s utterly delicious.
Fried Kaçkavall
This beloved cheese is found all over the southern Balkans and Albania, it’s often served in traditional restaurants as an entrée. It’s a yellow salty cheese made with sheep’s or cow’s milk, and you can also eat it in all sorts of dishes like baked kaçkavall or kaçkavall salad. We say fried kaçkavall is the best of them all and you can’t miss it on your Albania trip.
Best food in Albania
If you’re dreaming of discovering the best of Albania, you can’t miss out on the delicious Albanian cuisine, from hearty baked lamb and rice to fried cheese and flaky pastries.

Albania Tours & Vacations
If you think you know Albania, think again
This addictive country has a myriad of faces. In the rugged north, the Alps are so fierce they're 'accursed', while the south enjoys one of the least known and most beautiful coastlines in all of Europe . Tirana is filled with craziness, from its traffic to its nightlife, but on its doorstep are mosques, citadels, Ottoman architecture and a stunning dose of medieval Balkans. The real surprise of Albania is the people. Their warmth to strangers is infectious and you’re bound to find yourself swapping stories over a glass of raki or three.

Learn more about Albania
Best time to visit albania.
While the interior of the country sweats it out, summers along Albania’s Riviera are warm, fresh and bustling. When winter arrives so does the rain, but with temperatures above freezing for most of the country, it’s still easy to get out and about. November to March can mean heavy snowfalls in the Alps, so if you’re a fan of the white stuff it’s a great time to head to the hills.
Geography and environment
Perched along the western coast of the Balkan Peninsula, Albania borders some of Europe’s most colorful countries. Italy is within waving distance across the Strait of Otranto, Greece is to the south and Montenegro and Kosovo border to the north. This is one wild country. Most of the interior is covered with rugged mountain ranges and deep valleys. In the south, the snowy peaks give way to the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea; Albania’s Riviera where honeymooners flock and Corfu Island is just within arm’s reach.
Top 5 Albanian citadels
Albania's most charming medieval town is home to an amazingly well-preserved citadel. Surrounded by ancient stone walls, the citadel encloses dozens of churches and historic buildings while the white Ottoman houses clambering up the hillside to the castle have earned the town the nickname ‘City of a Thousand Windows’.
2. Gjirokastra
This 13th-century citadel is hammered into the mountain top and boasts beautiful examples of Ottoman architecture. Explore the kules and the fortress once used as a prison by the Nazis. Don’t forget to look at the views of the valley plunging below and say ‘Ohhhhh…’.
Once the headquarters of Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, Kruja Castle dates back to the 4th century, but it wasn’t until the 15th century that it really started to earn its keep. For 30 years it resisted the advances of the Turks, before finally falling to the Ottomans. Now it’s a little more peaceful and a nice spot to take in the views of olive groves, goats and the sprawling landscape.
Like all good citadels, Rozafa once rose imposingly over the region. Now in partial ruins, it’s still impressive. A stroll along its walls will transport you back to Illyrian times.
5. Pertrela
Perched on a rocky hill near Tirana, the fortress of Pertrela was part of the signaling and defense system for Kruja Castle during the 15th century. Today, it’s one of Albania's best preserved fortifications with spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains.

- Discover 60,000 years of history at the Muzeu Hostorik Kombetar.
- Take a cruise on Skadar, the largest lake in Southern Europe.
- Seek out the source of the Bistrice river in The Blue Eye, a natural spring of undetermined depths.
- Explore the Bizantin Monastery of Zvernec on an island in the Narta Lagoon. Yes, it is as beautiful as it sounds!
- Enjoy the secluded beaches of the Albanian Riviera; while not as “secluded” as they once were, you can still find unspoiled beaches if you look for them. Start your search with Palsa, and you won’t be disappointed.
Travel Tips
- Public transportation is a bit unconventional, so be flexible with scheduling, and fasten your seat-belt - if there is one. Also, there are no meters, so haggle yourself a good price before you hop onboard.
- Don’t expect to do much online while on a tour in Albania , the internet is not readily accessible.
- Leks (Albania’s currency) has changed in value, so if a bill says 100 Leks, it is actually 1000. Make sure you know what the price of things are before you pay for them.
- If an Albanian offers you something, don’t reject it, it is considered offensive.

Albania FAQ's
Albania is well-known for its contributions to culture , which stretches back over two millennia. You can see artifacts and works of art created by the people who call Albania home in the country`s many museums , of which the Durrës Archaeological Museum and the National Art Gallery are two not to be missed. Albania`s beaches are very popular, ranging from the untouched and pristine to flashy and touristy. Finally, it can`t be ignored that Albania`s Communist-era history and relics set it apart even from other former Communist nations in Eastern Europe.
Nearly all visitors to the country arrive in the capital, Tirana , and spend a few days exploring before heading to the coast. The city of Durrës is one of the oldest in Albania, dating back before the time of the Romans. Nearby is the beautiful Albanian Riviera , with such cities and towns as Sarandë , Ksamil , and Vlorë . The largest lake in Southern Europe, Lake Skadar , is a nationally protected wetland, and the ancient city of Shkodër sits between its banks and the Albanian Alps.
The best time to visit Albania are the shoulder periods , which are April through June and September and October . In the high period (July-August), crowds are at their largest, prices for accommodations are at their highest, and much of the country is very hot. Temperatures are much more agreeable during the shoulder periods, and you will find yourself in fewer tourist crowds while still being able to enjoy everything on your Albania vacation.
We recommend approximately 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in major cities.
We recommend seeing Albania by car . The state railway service, Albanian Railways, is typically used by travelers only for the experience, as the train lines do not connect all regions of the country with one another and the rolling stock is second-hand, mainly from former Communist nations and dated stock from Italy and Germany. Albania`s road network has been fully developed since the fall of Communism; there are now three national motorways and nine slightly smaller expressways connecting each region with one another.
The currency of Albania is the lek (written in shorthand as L). U.S. dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for lekë upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at many locations throughout the country.
English is a very popular foreign language for Albanians, and at least two-thirds of people under 30 can speak English. It may be harder to find older speakers of English as the Communist government which ruled until 1991 prioritized full English-language instruction only for a select few. You should have no problem finding English-speakers in large cities and on the Albanian Riviera. To ask someone in Albanian if anyone around speaks English, show them this sentence: A flet njeri anglisht?

Albania tour highlights
Our small group trips to Albania include both walking and cycling tours, adventures through the country’s spectacular national parks and charming UNESCO-listed towns and cities, and explorations through characterful villages where you’ll get to meet the local people who call the area home.
There are many highlights of Albania, a visually striking country which has so far resisted mass tourism; here are a few of our favourites:
Valbona National Park
A far cry from the well-trodden paths in western Europe, you’ll find deserted footpaths and remote villages in Albania’s northern alps on our Balkans Discovery Tour . One of the most alluring alpine valleys of Albania, Valbona National Park boasts lush canyons and wildflower meadows set amidst the towering, jagged peaks of the Accursed Mountains. Hike through alpine forests, along quiet village roads and over verdant pastures while taking in the far-reaching views of the Kukaj Valley. Stop for a picnic lunch en route and savour a cup of freshly brewed mountain tea prepared by a local shepherd’s family, before feasting on a delicious traditional dinner of slow-cooked lamb.
Butrint is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Balkans. UNESCO listed, Butrint exhibits a long and colourful history dating back to the early Neolithic age. The site features a large Roman amphitheatre, houses and thermal baths, encapsulated by lush forest on the picturesque and tranquil shores of the Vivari River. Follow your local guide on our Highlights of Albania Discovery Tour to learn about the discovery of these well-preserved ancient ruins and marvel at the fine baptisteries and ornate mosaic floors.
Small group travel in Albania
Our small group holidays to Albania are designed to take you to the heart of the country, with immersive experiences that are shared with likeminded fellow travellers. You could enjoy a walking tour of Tirana, visiting the immense Skanderbeg Square, or perhaps a leisurely stroll along the cobbled streets of UNESCO-listed Gjirokastra, or sampling the freshest summer watermelons in ancient Voskopoja.
Solo travel in Albania
Each of our small group holidays to Albania is well set-up for solo travellers, as well as those travelling with a partner or friends. On our tours you’ll find that, on average, around half of our customers will be travelling solo – the exact number depends on the tour you’ve chosen, but you'll be in good company. You can enjoy a fantastic trip while meeting fellow travellers who share your interests.

We were only 2, but during Berat visit there were also 2 other tourists who joined in the van, so in total 4. Bledar was really a good driver and guide. This is a good value for money. We had a nice walk in the castle and a very delicious lunch after. While hiking in Theth was the best hike i have ever done in my life.
Highly recommend, Bledar and BTOURS Albania
