We Wanted To Be On ‘The Right Side Of History' - DP World Tour Chairman
David Williams wanted to be on 'the right side of history' amid reports of DP World Tour partnering with LIV Golf

Outgoing European Tour Group chairman David Williams says he "wanted to be on the right side of history" regarding the future of the DP World Tour when explaining the decision to form a strategic alliance with the PGA Tour as opposed to LIV Golf.
The DP World Tour was reportedly mulling over a potential partnership with LIV Golf Investments, the organisation backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and the pioneers of the LIV Golf Invitational Series that started back in June.
Williams admitted to the the Scotsman that the DP World Tour "had a choice" between partnering with LIV or the PGA Tour. “We took a very hard economic look at an alternative and the phrase that we use is that we decided that we wanted to be on ‘the right side of history’," he told the Scotsman's Martin Dempster .
“The relationship with the PGA Tour has turned out to be a very positive one and a very strong one and there’s no sense of it being a case of the PGA Tour taking us over. The PGA Tour has global ambitions and we have an ability to operate globally, which actually they may not have to the same extent as we operate as a world tour.
“As a result, I think it is two great organisations coming together. There are things we can bring and things they can bring. Clearly, they bring a lot of financial muscle and that helps with the world we live in today.
"I am absolutely in no doubts about it - they are great partners. It’s built on personal relationships; it’s built on a business case. We had a choice. We went left while others went right, and I’m glad that we went left.”
The strategic alliance has been somewhat controversial since being confirmed, with some claiming that it has reduced the DP World Tour to a 'feeder tour' for the PGA Tour after the announcement of 10 PGA Tour cards being awarded to the top-10 finishers on the DP World Tour rankings and the fact that big names will be committing more time to the PGA Tour's new elevated events. Keith Pelley strongly denied the feeder tour claims at the BMW PGA Championship in September, with the true benefits of the alliance set to be seen in the 2024 schedule.

New era as golf’s European Tour becomes DP World Tour
Published: 09 November 2021 Last updated: 13 May 2022
The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from 2022.
The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from the start of the 2022 season in a new era for golf.
The European Tour group and DP World today jointly announced a ground-breaking evolution to their long-term partnership, with DP World becoming the new title sponsor of the group’s main tour from the start of the 2022 season.
WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Greg Norman on the Asian Tour and breakaway league rumours
The agreement heralds a new era in the history of the European Tour group, which, along with DP World, will celebrate its 50 th anniversary in 2022, the first season of the newly named DP World Tour.
Today’s announcement represents a significant deal in terms of global sports partnerships, with DP World’s substantial commitment dedicated to three key areas: elevating the Tour in every way, growing the game of golf globally, and driving positive community impact.
The new look DP World Tour will see total prize money break through the $200 million mark for the first time, with a new minimum prize fund of $2 million for all tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour.
In 2022, the DP World Tour will represent a truly global tour through an international schedule, that will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new tournaments in the UAE, Japan, South Africa and Belgium and an expanded Rolex Series comprising five events: the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

For the first time, it will also feature three tournaments co-sanctioned with the PGA TOUR – the aforementioned Genesis Scottish Open, as well as the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship taking place in the United States – as a result of the Strategic Alliance between male professional golf’s two leading Tours. To view the full 2022 schedule, please click here.
The European Tour and DP World were both established in 1972 and have since developed into global enterprises with DP World, which is headquartered in Dubai, evolving into the leading provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions.
DP World’s association with the European Tour spans more than a decade, first becoming a presenting partner of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai finale at Jumeirah Golf Estates in its inaugural year in 2009, before the Rolex Series event was renamed the DP World Tour Championship in 2012. It was in this year that DP World became the tournament’s title partner.
DP World then became an Official Partner of the European Tour in 2015, and they will now become the Official Title Partner of the Tour from the start of the 2022 season, which begins with the Joburg Open in South Africa, from November 22-25.
Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “Today’s announcement is undoubtedly a momentous one in the proud history of our Tour. The launch of the DP World Tour in 2022, coinciding with both of our 50th anniversaries, will herald a new era in global golf, and crucially it will benefit everybody involved – all our players, caddies, fans and partners – as well as making an important contribution to wider society.
“The entire ecosystem of our Tour will be strengthened because of this hugely significant deal, and that was essential to us and to DP World, who have been an incredible supporter of our Tour as well as golf more widely, from grassroots through to the elite professional game.
“The DP World Tour is, therefore, a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of ‘World’ in our new title better reflects our global reach.”

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “DP World has been a partner of the European Tour for over a decade. Our long-standing partnership has provided an excellent platform to engage with customers, prospects, and stakeholders, and build our brand. We have relished the opportunity to support the Tour in growing the game of golf and improving access to the sport at all levels. The key to this success has been and will continue to be the shared vision and values that underpin the partnership.
“We both have a global mindset, are committed to inclusivity, and invest in new technologies to stay competitive – attributes which today become the fundamental principles of the DP World Tour. As the leading provider of smart logistics solutions worldwide, we will use our people, assets, and connectivity to help grow the Tour further and change what’s possible in golf.”
Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR and Board Member of the European Tour, added; “Thanks to the support of long-standing partner DP World, today’s announcement significantly elevates the European Tour on a global basis. We are excited for the continued growth and evolution of the European Tour, as well as the momentum this provides toward our Strategic Alliance. I’ve said before that our respective Tours are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence, and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts.”
How will DP World’s partnership help to enhance the European Tour?
Biggest prize fund in European Tour history
Overall prize funds in 2022 will be more than $140 million for all tournaments outside the Majors and World Golf Championships, outstripping the previous all-time pre-pandemic high of $130 million in 2019.
Including the Majors and WGCs, the total prize fund on the 2022 DP World Tour will exceed $200 million, benefitting all tournaments and all members across all categories .
New $2 million minimum tournament prize fund
For the first time, every tournament solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour will have a minimum prize fund of at least US$2 million, ensuring that all members benefit from this boosted investment.
A record $10 million prize fund for the 2022 DP World Tour Championship
This will make the season finale – the final Rolex Series tournament of 2022 – the first European Tour event in history outside the Majors and WGCs to feature an eight-figure prize fund.

Big shot: David Williams
Position Chairman, PGA European Tour
David Williams may not be as good a golfer as his predecessor, but the new chairman of the PGA European Tour has the edge over Neil Coles for commercial experience.
Mr Williams, formerly chief executive at the now-defunct Threshers off-licence chain, is chairman of operating partners at the private equity firm Duke Street and a non-executive director of companies including Mothercare.
At the European Tour, he is stepping into the shoes of a celebrated golfer. While he never won a major, Coles, 78, triumphed in 45 events during his long career and played in eight Ryder Cups. He has been chairman of the tour for 38 years.
Mr Williams, a “keen golfer”, spent much of his early career
PGA European Tour appoints New Chairman
1.26am 3rd December 2013 - People
David Williams has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of The PGA European Tour effective 1st January 2014. This follows the announcement in May 2013 that Neil Coles MBE would be stepping down from the role which he has held for the past 38 years.
David will be responsible for building on the legacy left by Neil Coles MBE, further developing the Tour and its business activities around the world.
David brings considerable commercial experience to The PGA European Tour having led a wide range of public and private businesses over the last 35 years both as CEO and as Chairman. These include senior roles at Whitbread Group PLC, Diageo PLC and PepsiCo Restaurants Inc, Mothercare PLC and the Royal London Mutual Insurance Group Ltd. David has worked across the world and his global experience will be invaluable as The PGA European Tour reaches out into new markets.
He is currently Chairman of the Operating Partners at Duke Street Capital and acts on the Boards of a number of well known businesses in this capacity. David has an MSc in Management from the London Business School where he was a Governor.
The appointment meets all of the original objectives set by the Nomination Committee; key requirements included proven business leadership, an interest in golf, and the ability to deal with the diverse sporting, business and political issues faced by the Tour.
The incoming Chairman, David Williams, has a proven track record of building consensus amongst key stakeholders in consumer, leisure and retail businesses and of taking organisations into new business areas or in a different strategic direction. Williams has won particular praise for his strong interpersonal abilities, leading and motivating management teams, driving change programmes, and positioning businesses and Boards for growth.
Commenting on his appointment, Williams said, “To follow in the footsteps of someone who has been as much of a figurehead as Neil Coles is a tremendous honour. The European Tour brand is strong and I will work with George O’Grady, his Executive team, the Players and the Board to take the organisation forward. In particular I’ll be looking to ensure that the Tour is structured in a way which enables it to further increase its expansion and appeal across the globe as well as working with the players and our business partners to promote long-term sustainable growth.”
The Chief Executive of the European Tour, George O’Grady CBE, welcomed the appointment: “The unique strength of the European Tour is the fact that the Members, through their representatives on the board, govern the Tour. They have chosen David Williams as Chairman as his management expertise, commercial experience, and business credentials will give everyone, those within the Tour and those connected to us, great confidence. I am delighted to personally welcome David to the European Tour, and look forward to working with him, as we face our challenges both on the European and the global stage.”
Thomas Björn, Chairman of The European Tour Players’ Committee said, “On behalf of all of the players on The European Tour, I am delighted to welcome David as our new Chairman. David’s business credentials speak for themselves and I look forward to working with him as we continue to build on the success of The European Tour around the world.I know every one of the players will be delighted to welcome David personally at the first event he attends.”
David Jones, European Tour Board Director and Chairman of the Nomination Committee commented, “For the first time ever the Board and Players took the step of looking outside the ranks of professional golf for a Chairman. What came through most strongly from all of the candidates is the respect and admiration in which the European Tour is held in the wider commercial world. In David Williams we have chosen a Chairman who brings a powerful business background to the European Tour. His strength of character and broad experience will be a huge asset for the Tour in developing our influence in the world of golf.”
Paul McGinley, the current European Ryder Cup Captain and a European Tour professional since 1992, said: “These are exciting times for The European Tour and the appointment of someone with the business acumen of David Williams is undoubtedly good news for our development both at home and around the world.
“In my role as a member of the Players’ Committee and, indeed, as Ryder Cup Captain, I have seen at first hand the importance of the commercial aspect of golf and how it needs to work hand in hand with the playing side. In our new Chairman we have someone who will bring these two elements together.
“Finally, I would like to put on record my own appreciation for the tireless work done in the role by Neil Coles over the past 38 years. Everyone involved in golf has the utmost respect for what Neil achieved in the game, both on the golf course and in the boardroom, and we all wish him well in his retirement.”

European Tour: Chief executive George O'Grady to step down when successor is found
Thursday 6 November 2014 11:52, UK
George O’Grady has announced he will step down as chief executive of the European Tour when a successor to the role is found.
An announcement had originally been planned to coincide with the season-ending finale DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, but recent media speculation has hastened the process.
The 65-year-old became only the third chief executive in the European Tour’s history in 2005, succeeding John Jacobs, who supervised the Tour’s formative years from 1971 to 1974 and Ken Schofield, who took over the reins on January 1, 1975.
He has been with The European Tour for over 40 years and during this time has been instrumental in its development, including the implementation of The Race To Dubai and The Final Series, overseeing the significant growth of The Ryder Cup, securing key TV and sponsorship agreements and helping the process which saw golf reinstated in the Olympic Games.
I have agreed with the Board to stay not only for the time it takes to appoint a new CEO but also for sufficient additional time after that to see them properly settled in. George O'Grady
O’Grady said: “In the aftermath of what I believe to have been the best presented Ryder Cup since my first involvement in the contest at Royal Lytham in 1977, I felt this was the right time to ask the board to begin the search for my successor.

Successful season
“It is my firm belief that, coming towards the end of what has been another incredibly successful season, we are now seeing the green shoots of recovery across Europe and I am pleased that this coincides with all our building blocks, in terms of key television and sponsorship contracts, being in place.
“I have agreed with the board to stay not only for the time it takes to appoint a new CEO but also for sufficient additional time after that to see them properly settled in. The board also agreed that, at that stage, I will take up a role as president of International Relations which will see me represent the European Tour through the Olympic Games in 2016.”

He has always respected the traditions of the Tour and built on the strong foundations put in place by John Jacobs, Neil Coles and Ken Schofield.
