It wasn’t always like that. APT’s journey has taken 90 years to get us, via coaches, railways, and the rest. The story is fascinating.

The APT Story

“As Australia’s largest family-owned tour and cruise company, we are committed to delivering unforgettable travel experiences to our valued guests. What began as just a vision, over 95 years ago, has now grown into a proud global business, demonstrating the power of dreaming fully.”

It all started from typically humble beginnings. When tram drivers went on an extended strike in 1920s Melbourne, 24 year old mechanic Bill McGeary found opportunity amongst the chaos. He converted his truck into a makeshift bus before shuttling commuters around the busy city, plugging holes left by the overly relied-upon trams. It was a roaring success.

Over the next 20 years, Bill bought more buses and took on more routes. The Australian Pacific name became somewhat iconic as modern buses trundled through the city. A family business, Bill’s son Geoff took over the reins when the former sadly died. 

Fast forward to the 1970s and business is booming. Geoff is chartering journeys to New Zealand, and eventually to Canada and Alaska in 1991. Australian Pacific Coaches has gone way beyond that, and was providing tours by luxury train and ship as well. Australian Pacific Tours was born; APT as we now know it.

In 1996 APT acquired Travelmarvel, signalling a shift into a more affordable, more freedom-based travel market. APT now covers 70 countries across the world for a wide range of travel experiences. In 2005, Geoff saw a window of opportunity in European river cruising. In 2023, APT finally became a partnered cruise line of Panache Cruises.

My personal favourite feature of these ships has to be the Irish-themed pub, McGeary’s. Watch sport, feast on a bar snack, and enjoy a pint of draught Guinness. Happy Hour is from 6pm and 7pm when drinks are half price!

APT unveils plans for two new ultra-luxury river ships in Europe for 2025

Entering its latest phase of investment, product innovation and fleet elevation, the luxury river cruise operator, APT has announced the forthcoming launch of two new vessels, the APT Solara and APT Ostara, for the 2025 season.

Designed in Australia by multi-award-winning, world-renowned architects, Hecker Guthrie, the sister ships will be masterpieces of modernity, drawing inspiration from Europe’s waterways and harnessing the unpretentious ease of Australian-style luxury. Cutting edge technology and the structural optimisation of space and light artfully balance the elegant design and meticulous attention to detail. These ultra-luxury floating hotels will redefine the brand, cementing APT’s elevation into the ‘ultra-luxury’ category. Solara and Ostara will be deployed on APT’s most popular European itineraries from Spring 2025, transporting guests along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers in unprecedented comfort and style.

The new luxury river ships proudly set a new standard in sustainability, ensuring greater emphasis on saving fuel, energy optimisation, and waste reduction. With only 154 guests on board serviced by 60 dedicated crew, guests can also be assured of outstanding service and care.

Each ship will feature six world-class, all-inclusive dining options: a main restaurant, an intimate wine cellar, a relaxing conservatory, a casual dining option, an exclusive aft restaurant, rooftop dining, plus the additional option of in-suite dining. Up on the sun deck, guests will find a heated pool, alfresco dining, and a lounge area in which to relax. A choice of three expertly designed, elegantly appointed suite options include Twin Window Suites, Balcony Suites, and Owner’s Suites.

Paul Hecker of Hecker Guthrie captures the essence of the design, stating, “One of the particularly lovely things in this design is there are lots of places to go to. Guests don’t just have to head to the ‘main lounge’. We are creating many opportunities for guests to find their space, be it reading nooks or spaces where you can observe the action and engage as and when you choose. We want guests to have as many options as possible.”

It was great and what I expected

It was great and what I expected. Kolkata was a little crazy and the weather was, at times, very hot and humid. Taj Bengal hotel rooms a little disappointing but the food was great. Full days with outings meant there was not a lot of down-time for relaxing. Discovered an Indian gin 'Greater Than' on board and I managed to get a couple of bottles home (bought from shop not borrowed from boat) with me. This was our first river cruise so we were not too sure what to expect but it worked well in the end. Boat crew very helpful with my wife who has some restrictions on walking.

A PERFECT RIVER CRUISE

We did not fly out to the departure port but went to Budapest by train. Somewhat mysteriously APT would not pick us up from the station or take us back to the station in Amsterdam. (Total cost 35 Euros!) We did not receive mooring details or notice that the boat had moved moorings, resulting in a one a three quarter hour walk, with luggage, to find it! Contacting APT to find the boat was difficult as the contact numbers appeared to be to UK based personnel. Eventually we obtained a number from the cruise director who came ashore to direct us. However, once aboard we were impressed by the boat, its crew and the wonderful service we received. The cabin was comfortable and spotlessly clean. With a couple of exceptions, the food was 5 Star - one case of very undercooked lamb and one case of cold food. The onboard entertainment, The Double Malt Duo, was superb. The cruise director, Thomas, was again a credit to APT, knowledgeable, a good and amusing presenter and always helpful. The tours were generally excellent if not always to our taste. However, it was strange that bicycle tours were offered but were not available on our cruise. It would have been easy to delete them from our personalised programme. Finally, but certainly not least, all the crew from the captain and his officers to the domestic personnel and the seamen were always polite, friendly and attentive. We will certainly cruise with APT again and have already recommended the Line to friends.

Excellent, after a "hiccup"

We spotted what we thought was a real bargain offer and so were keen to make sure we could take advantage of it. We spent some time waiting to be spoken to on the phone before leaving a request for a call back and also getting as far as we could with an online booking which also entailed waiting for a call back. We had heard nothing after an hour (the "hiccup") and so tried ringing again. We got through almost immediately and the agent we spoke to picked up the previous contacts and dealt very politely, efficiently and calmly with our questions and the booking process. She also made us aware of a further price reduction and included transportation to and from the airport that added to this being a good deal, for which we thanked her. Had it not been for the "hiccup" this would have been a 5-star marking.

Top Quality Tour by APT

Well organised team of helpers facilitating an excellent holiday. A number of excursions where very similiar need to consider having internal speakers sometimes rather than constantly leaving ship to visit same environments.Expert talks on health and economics of area in would have been interesting.

The trip was amazing

The trip was amazing! Tours off the ship were so interesting with fabulous guides and a good variety of experiences. Staff onboard were truly wonderful. They could not do enough to make our holiday special and they succeeded!

Tour was very good but …

Tour was very good but far too much time on the coach and not enough time for stops as there were some lovely towns we called at for comfort breaks or lunch etc. we would have also liked more time to see the beautiful cities we very much rushed through. There were some lunch stops, remembering that this was a luxury tour, that were very much not up to standard. The choices for a dairy free pescatarian were very limited especially at lunch stops where I often had the choice of chips or fries! The organised meals weren’t much better with an exception of a few. I mostly had a choice of fish and chips or fish and whatever. By the end I felt I could have swum part of the way home. On the plus side we saw some spectacular scenery, met some lovely people and learnt so much about the history and culture of NZ.

With this in mind, some lunch stops may be in slightly more rural locations. For those with a little more time, we do offer a slightly longer variation of this tour with 20 days at a slightly more relaxed pace - Essence of New Zealand. Great Trip!

Our Tour Director, Long, was absolutely excellent, together with the all staff in the hotels, on the ship and the tour guides. I liked the organisation and care taken…

I liked the organisation and care taken by Travel Marvel both before and during the cruise. I felt at home with whole experience which matters to me as a single traveller. The excursions and guides were excellent as were the hotels in Hanoi, Saigon and Siem Reap. I came home buzzing about the company, the people of Vietnam and Cambodia and to end up at Angkor Wat was spectacular. The river boat was extremely comfortable and food excellent too. Looking forward to travelling with you again.

Brilliantly organised and guided the…

Brilliantly organised and guided the same by Tony. To criticise would be merely nitpicking! Occasionally things were a little rushed. The food in Vietnam became rather samey….too many similar taster menus. For those travelling at this time of the year, it should be plenty stressed that you might need some warm clothing and rain gear for both Hanoi and Halong Bay….. many in our group were caught out.

Cambodia & Vietnam Mekong river cruise

Cambodia to Vietnam Mekong river cruise. We had a fantastic holiday. The experiences that we experienced were more than we could have hoped for. From the tour Manager (Son) to the guides , Bunta in particular, were fantastic. The staff on board . Food, trips, were excellent. The boat, cabins good size, loved the wood interior. Food excellent.Sun loungers not the best but by no means spoiled the holiday. If you are considering, book it,you will enjoy . Loved it !

Well organised New Zealand adventure

The tour was extremely well organised and planned activities were appropriate. Optional activities were also available, if desired. The accommodation and food were of an excellent standard and the local knowledge from the tour director and driver were also superb. Once the usual coach was delivered, things got a lot more comfortable on the long runs between stops. Some of the early starts on days with longer journeys were a bit brutal (if necessary) but overall we really enjoyed the tour.

Fantastic itinerary and wonderful staff…

Fantastic itinerary and wonderful staff on this cruise. However, there were a number of passengers, including myself, that fell ill during the cruise. It was suggested by the director of the crew that this was simple dehydration but suspicions were that this was probably a Norovirus as 3 passengers were taken to hospital.

Such an amazing experience! From the assistance with the booking to the farewell party. It was so well organised. Even the gifts (2 backpacks and a document folder) were extremely useful and appreciated. Competent, meticulous and experienced tour manager who accompanied us every step of the way. Our excellent Mekong delta river Cruise

Our tour guides Bunta and phouk were both amazing, we learnt a lot about Cambodia and Vietnam from them. The cruise staff were also very friendly and supportive, Tony, cruise director, Johnny cruise manager also Sofia our restaurant waitress. We couldn’t fault the service that we received. We would possibly have liked a bit more entertainment in the evening. All in all we enjoyed ourselves

From start to finish the tour was very well organised and put together . All transport between venues , all hotels ,the boat , the excursions and the staff fully met our expectations, and some staff especially exceeded them . We upgraded to the Angkor cabin which was a good decision as our original one was on the small side but that’s our preference and it shouldn’t put anyone off thinking about this trip . I’d have no hesitation in recommending this trip to anyone with a sense of adventure and a liking for doing in in luxury.

Coach not fit for purpose

Coach not fit for purpose, hard seats over drives up to 416km / day on poor road surfaces. Aircon had a problem resulting in people developing respiratory distress within days.I finally succumbed day 10 struggling through to Medical Appointment Sat p.m. in Christchurch. Last 5 days were about coping with hard cough and sleepless nights. I've been to my Dr. In Perth and now on stronger Meds as the antibiotics prescribed in Christchurch was inadequate. I'm out of pocketNZ$180.40 and $142.50AUD since end of trip. Scenic Hotel, Dunedin City was poorest quality ever especially in restaurant. Orders lost, delayed & cancelled. " Staffing" given as an explanation. Not our concern as this was most expensive holiday of our 42 years marriage!!

Thought the crew on board really worked hard, with the exception of the cruise director who barely spoke to clients on board. The ship was clean and pleasant, with good food. However, felt that more effort could be made in the evenings regarding better entertainment. Being quite limited with my mobility found the long walk from my cabin ( about as far as you could get) quite challenging and the problem of the lift breaking down almost every day. Also the walk between the airport terminals and the coaches rather demanding. Felt unable to take any of the excursions - no effort was made to try and make something possible for me.

Lovely cruise with friendly professional staff

Really good experience from beginning to end. The ship was superb and new. The crew were professional and discreet. Cabins were comfortable with good size beds. I liked the balcony effect of the window which could be opened down to waist height. Food was really excellent. Cruise Director was friendly and ensured that all the on shore trips ran smoothly. Lovely friendly ambience throughout. Would definitely recommend.

Amazing Cruise Amsterdam to Budapest

Cruise was amazing. Wonderful staff. Just need to get dietary requirements of passengers sorted. My wife who is Coeliac was served a dish which was not Gluten Free resulting in her missing 4 days of our trip through being very poorly.

Singles treated equal on this cruise

The Staff are helpful and cheerful. The cabins very clean and good size with comfort thought about. The food and meals are plentiful and good choices to suit everyone. Trips are interesting, but you need to be mobile. The guides were very fluent and interesting. A little more time for shopping or exploring alone would be an advantage. Entertainment is simple but suitable for all and easy to relax. Over all an excellent experience.

An enjoyable Christmas Market cruise.

This was an enjoyable break. All the staff were excellent in meeting our needs, the food was good and the accommodation standard was high. My only complaint was the standard of the coffee from the self-service machine. Unlike many companies, this Christmas market cruise was a full week and included excursions which made the trip worthwhile.

TRAVEL MARVEL

Food good, Cabin clean,Ship below deck clean,Main areas clean but Sun deck was a bit tired and needed some attention.Staff very helpful and attentive. Our biggest disappointment as when moored for three nights we were next to another ship.As my wife is very claustrophobic this was very stressful,as we had paid £2400.00 extra to ensure a view and that we could open our window,had we known about this we would not have booked this cruise.

There is a need to improve hygiene…

There is a need to improve hygiene procedures on board. This is particularly needed in the restaurant for the buffet facilities. When we joined the boat on the second half of a 2 week trip it was obvious there was a cough/cold virus onboard. However no measures were taken to ensure guests sanitized their hands before entering the dining area and everyone touching the various serving utensils.

Unbelievable Value

A great all inclusive cruise. Our first river cruise and so enjoyable. The food was excellent if a little repetitive in the veg dept. with the same 3 veg for 14 days, but this was the only complaint. The excursions were well organised by Victor the Cruise Director and broken into small groups of 20/30 moving at different speeds to cater for all walking capabilities. Only question remains is where next, The Douro, The Rhone?

We really enjoyed the cruise, but there were a few issues to address

We really enjoy river cruises and in the main this one lived up to expectation. The cabin was good and the staff were great. The outings were interesting and we particularly liked the concert in Vienna and the home visit. In our view the ship needs a quiet, comfortable lounge (not a bar). The evening meal main courses were too big on presentation and too small on quantity!

A disappointing and costly mistake.

1.Pre- boarding & onboard lack of Covid testing/ monitoring. Like many passengers, we contracted Covid onboard. 2.Habitual queuing prior to restaurant opening times flouting 'open dining' concept. 3. A lot of the food, especially sauces were recycled from lunch to dinner. Heavy reliance on pre-booked breaded food. In conclusion, a great disappointment after last year's Croatian small ship Dalmatian coast cruise.

Excellent itinery

Excellent itinery and a very good crew. A couple of niggles. 1. the gyms should have a cross trainer or similar and the weights, particularly on the Amavenita were pathetic. Also we were left too long after our shore trips to fend for ourselves. Food, though limited, was very good as was the service. I should add that the internet on Polaris was very good, however on Amavenita, it was poor.

Second week so many poorly,people from Australia and far away places sneezing coughing ,i had to visit the doctor when i returned home who said i had a bad virus,,will never go on a river boat cruise again and it was very expensive,other people from Britain suffered too captain acknowledged the illness too.A waste of money.

Danube cruise

Danube cruise - visits to Budapest and Vienna were very enjoyable. Tour guide in Vienna was excellent, as was the Mozart Strauss concert. The length of the tour in Regensburg could have been a bit shorter. The cabin on the ship was great and the food was very good. The only flaw was the timing of the return flight which resulted in a long wait at Munich Airport before we could check in and seats were not available.

What a fantastic cruise

What a fantastic cruise. We didn’t know what to expect and everything exceeded our expectations. The staff on both of the boats were excellent particularly David, Jeffrey and Albert on the first boat and Rahul on the second. The entertainment duo of Tori and Dave were enthusiastic and professional. We were fortunate to have fellow passengers who were determined to have a good time and boy we did. The itinerary was excellent and some of the APT experiences were just unbelievable. Our lady organizer, Anja made sure that everyone knew where they were going and got everything done as it should be. Thank you very much for a wonderful experience.

Truly a 5 star experience

A real 5 star experience. APT provided an excellent Cruise Director who was very well briefed and knowledgeable as well as being available for many hours a day. The food was really excellent with a different menu every day, served by a great team of waiters. The highlights had to be the 24 castles in a Rhine valley (with excellent commentary from the cruise director) and the private concert in the Lichtenstein Palace in Vienna. The shore excursions almost every day with really knowledgeable English speaking guides really made the trip.

When do I receive my documentation from APT Touring?

Travel documents are sent via email approximately two to three weeks before your departure date. Always read and check them carefully, as additional information may be required to finalise the booking.

Where do I join my APT Cruise?

Most of our itineraries begin with a transfer from the nearest airport. We can recommend appropriate flight times when you book. Some guests choose to fly in early and spend a few days before the cruise commences, so we can provide a date and time to meet your travel rep before boarding. Our European cruise ships are available for early boarding, passengers can access the public areas, and luggage can be stored at reception. Cabins and suites are available from 3 p.m.

Could changing water levels affect my APT cruise?

River levels alter throughout the year depending on the season and the weather, so sometimes, itineraries have to change if parts of the river are not navigable or port stops are inaccessible. APT has nearly a century of cruise experience and can adjust itineraries to reflect the demands of the river and always find a worthy replacement for a shore excursion of comparable enjoyment and interest.

What if I have special dietary requirements?

Let us know when you make your reservation, and our gourmet chefs will endeavour to accommodate your specific dietary requirements. Food on board our vessels is prepared daily and includes vegan and vegetarian options.

Will I have internet access on my river cruise?

Internet access is usually available on all our vessels but can be affected by specific geographies or remote locations. Check with your booking agent, who will be able to advise if there are areas of the cruise where coverage is poor so you can plan accordingly.

Can I take prescription medicines on board the ship?

Guests can bring prescription medication on their cruise, and this should be kept in its original packaging with the label and name clearly visible. Always check with your GP before you travel so that you have enough medication with you for your planned time away.
