Gaming —

A visit to galloping ghost, the largest video game arcade in the usa, from the archives: we took a trip down memory lane through galloping ghost's 400+ games..

Eric Bangeman - Nov 26, 2017 4:33 pm UTC

Row upon row of vintage arcade games.

Further Reading

As someone who came of age in the 1980s, games such as Ms. Pac-Man , Donkey Kong , Defender , and Crazy Climber have a special place in my heart. Too many Saturdays, I would hop on my bike, ride to the Aurora Mall, and exchange my paper route earnings for tokens at the arcade there. I spent many an afternoon blasting aliens, gobbling glowing dots, leaping over barrels, and dodging bird poop and potted plants while climbing skyscrapers. As the console games of the time felt like graphically inferior knockoffs of my arcade favorites, my video-gaming attention was focused first and foremost on the arcades.

The mid- and late-'80s saw a decline in arcades, and despite some intermittent surges in popularity, they've never recaptured the glory years that I remember from high school. Gaming these days mostly happens on a console at home, on a smartphone or tablet, or at food-and-gaming behemoths like Dave & Busters. Though shrunken in numbers, arcades like those of my youth still live on in scattered locations.

Galloping Ghost, located in Brookfield, Illinois, about a 25-minute (best case) drive from downtown Chicago, is one such place. $15 gets you all of the gaming you can stand until closing time at 2am—no quarters needed. And hold onto your receipt, as it will get you back in should you choose to head across the street to Tony's Breakfast Cafe (now open 24 hours) for some nourishment.

Galloping Ghost resides in an unassuming brick building on a commercial section of busy Ogden Avenue not far from the Brookfield Zoo. Upon entering, my senses were assaulted by the beeping and blooping of hundreds of cabinets. I noticed the large fans circulating air heated by a couple hundred vintage consoles. "What's the heating bill like in the winter?" I later asked owner “Doc” Mack. "Cheap," he replied.

The wall behind the front counter is populated by pixel-art characters from popular video games. A small fridge offers up carbonated beverages and sports drinks. Under the counter are candy bars. And as I scanned the dimly lit interior, I saw little more than wall-to-wall consoles resting on well-worn gray carpeting. Stools and chairs are scattered around the aisles in case you want to take a load off while getting your game on. Many of the consoles have placards perched on top with record high scores, both worldwide and for Galloping Ghost.

Walking up and down the aisles, I examined the consoles. Some of them looked the worse for wear, with chipping or fading paint and burned-in monitors. Others resided in generic-looking cabinets, or their appearance didn’t square with my memory of how the consoles looked; Mack later explained that they often cannibalized parts and cabinets to keep the games alive. Some cabinets housed two titles, like Pac-Man Jr. and Super Pac-Man . And alongside smash-hits like Galaga were less-popular sequels like Galaga 88 and Galaga 3 ; for every Centipede , there was a Millipede . It was beautiful.

Arcades and barcades

But you won't find beer at Galloping Ghost . "There's too little focus on the arcade" at barcades, Mack told Deputy Editor Nate Anderson and me during a recent visit. "When you inject alcohol into it, it muddies it up a little bit." That's why you can't buy anything stronger than a Mountain Dew there. But as I looked over row upon row of cabinets, I knew I wouldn't mind.

An array of Mortal Kombat cabinets.

The games are loosely grouped by genre. There's a room full of fighting games, including more versions of Mortal Kombat than I knew existed. The back row of the arcade consists of shooting simulators, and one of the middle rows was apparently the early-'80s nostalgia section. It was there that I found the cabinets I spent much of high school pumping quarters and tokens into: Gorf , Ms. Pac-Man , Tempest , Donkey Kong , Missile Command , Bump and Jump , Frogger , Zaxxon … the list goes on. "People come through the door [and] you can tell it's their first time," Mack told me as I marveled at the selection. "It's an old friend you haven't seen for 20 years."

Nate Anderson playing an old favorite of his, 1942.

I drifted from cabinet to cabinet, not having to worry about digging through my pockets for another quarter or visiting a change machine for more tokens. Not having to pay for each game had one unanticipated side-effect: walking away from a game in progress. My first shot at Donkey Kong Junior resulted in two deaths on the first screen, so I cut my losses and moved on to Defender sequel Stargate .

Most of the games were in excellent shape, but there were a couple in need of some TLC. Sometimes the joystick didn’t work all that well, a button needed to be mashed really hard, or a trackball wouldn’t spin very smoothly. And some of the games on the floor were powered down. Given the sheer abundance of old titles, the disappointment of finding a game in less-than-perfect working order was always tempered by the joy of spotting another long-lost friend.

This old cabinet

Galloping Ghost sits on a busy street in suburban Chicago.

Getting the arcade open was a challenge on a couple of levels for Mack. First up was finding a location. "We went to other places and other towns," Mack explained. "They said 'you're going to have kids hanging out there.' And there were problems back in the '80s." It's also a big time commitment. Although he has a small handful of staff, he's there almost every day of the week.

Brookfield, where Galloping Ghost is located, has a limit of only six coin-operated machines per building. In winning approval for the arcade from the city, Mack stressed the educational aspect of Galloping Ghost. "We teach people how to wire their machines... If somebody brings something in, instead of us just fixing it for them, we show them and let them fix it." Those classes have paid off, not just for folks who have a cabinet or two in the basement, but for owners of other area arcades who have attended weekend repair clinics.

Toward the back of the arcade is a repair room littered with old boards and CRTs. What do you do when a CRT dies, I asked Mack. "There's a TV repair shop down the street we use," was the reply.

CRTs waiting to be repaired or recycled into another cabinet.

Cabinets can also be pilfered for parts. For instance, the monitor for Galaga 3 started its life inside a Ms. Pac-Man cabinet, judging by the burned-in image of the first-level maze. And sometimes getting games running can be a real pain—or really expensive. Take King of Fighters XIII : "when this came out, there was nobody in the US who had it," said Mack. "The board by itself is $8,000, so I spent the $8,000 to get it... imported it from Japan."

"About 14 months later, the home console [version] came out," he continued. "They added two new characters, so nobody wanted to play the arcade version anymore and we were left with an $8,000 door stop."

So he dropped a PlayStation 3 into the cabinet so gamers could have the most current experience. But gamers can be fickle. "It's not as popular in the competitive scene... I'm actually swapping it back to the original arcade hardware," Mack said. "It's nice to have more characters, but it's about being the true arcade experience." King of Fighters XIII was also one of the few machines in the arcade with an LCD instead of CRT.

Having spare parts and extra cabinets allows Galloping Ghost to give some games special treatment, as well. “[One version of] Mortal Kombat didn’t get an arcade release,” Mack said. “So we did a full custom cabinet and side art. We really made it look like an actual cabinet release [and] held tournaments on it.”

Developer NetherRealm heard about Galloping Ghost’s custom Mortal Kombat cabinet and commissioned Mack to build one for Injustice: Gods Among Us . “We made one for here and one for their office,” Mack said.

With all of the rare and obscure titles at Galloping Ghost, I wondered if there were games Mack wanted but couldn’t find. “It’s all out there,” he replied. “There’s always stuff I’m looking for, and sometimes I’ll come across it, but I don’t want to spend that much money.” His patience usually pays off, however: Nemesis took 14 months to track down and buy.

A new fighter

Galloping Ghost currently has two different locations in the same building: the arcade and Galloping Ghost Studio. In between is a catering business that Mack would love to take over so he could have the entire building to himself. To that end, he has—you guessed it—a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to buy out the caterer and expand into the space. Included in the expansion plan is a dedicated pinball room, gaming lounges for PC and console gaming, and even the “Ghost Luxury Hostel” for visiting gamers.

To reach the studio, we had to walk down Ogden Avenue to another entrance. As Mack fished the keys out of his pockets, I peered through the window at even more classic games, including Xevious , Scramble , and Crazy Climber . As we walked into the studio, the first thing I noticed was a massive cabinet for a game called Dark Presence . A closer look revealed that it was manufactured by Galloping Ghost Productions. That’s right—Mack is building his own fighting game.

The cabinet for Dark Presence, a new fighter from Galloping Ghost Studios.

“We had originally approached the actors from Mortal Kombat to be in it,” Mack explained. “But it was way too much of a time commitment for them.” Having studied martial arts for 30 years, Mack did all the choreography for Dark Presence . “The actor had to do the moves, and that footage ended up being the sprites for the game. They all had to do it in costume.”

Almost all of the production is done in-house, including 3D rendering. “We’re trying to create a unique game,” Mac said. “We didn’t want to rip Mortal Kombat off. We didn’t want to rip Street Fighter off. It’s more based on real fighting than those other games.”

Mack walked us around the studio, including a back room with about a dozen pinball tables and a closet full of boards, carts, and CRTs. In another room, I spied Crazy Climber . Mack fired it up for me and patiently watched as I reacquainted myself with the game’s odd control mechanic well enough to make it to the third skyscraper.

Wandering the aisles of Galloping Ghost was fun. Hearing Berzerk say “stop the humanoid, stop the intruder” upon completing a level and having Gorf taunt me with “bite the dust, Space Colonel” 30-plus years after the last time I encountered one of those cabinets in an arcade almost made the trip worthwhile by itself. After four hours spent in the 1980s, I emerged blinking into the sunshine of 2014. Gaming has come a long way from the arcade’s heyday, with immersive stories and rich graphical experiences reaching heights undreamed of when I was a teenager in suburban Denver. But sometimes it’s good to revisit the past, when game mechanics were simpler and plots nearly nonexistent, if only to marvel at how far we’ve come.

With another album in the bag, Arcade Fire tour tickets are officially in high demand—and luckily, we’ve got all the tips for how to snag a discounted ticket (or two) to their show.

Arcade Fire 2022 World Tour Tickets

The Canadian indie rock group, which is helmed by married couple Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, released their critically acclaimed sixth studio album, WE, on May 6, 2022. The record—the bulk of which was written before 2020—marks their last album featuring bandmember Will Butler before his departure from the band in 2021. “I left at the end of last year, after the new record was complete,” he tweeted in 2022. “There was no acute reason beyond that I’ve changed—and the band has changed—over the last almost 20 years. Time for new things.”

Will’s older brother and former bandmate, Win, addressed his amicable exit from the band during an interview with NME published in May 2022. “He’s our family and everyone in the band’s family, and he’s such a brilliant guy—he has so many things that just aren’t this band.” He added, “And on a human level, he’s got three young children, he just has so much other stuff to do. We’re fully supportive of his path, and can’t wait to see it.”

During their interview with NME, Arcade Fire bandleaders Win and Régine also opened up about their process behind making the new album. “I think when we were making these songs, we weren’t sure what world we were making it for,” Win shared. “There’s so many precarious things in the world and so much to have anxiety about, but I’ve been trying to really appreciate these moments when I’m in them. When the world is a beautiful place, I’m trying to allow myself to appreciate it in a way that I wouldn’t have before.”

For fans of Arcade Fire, there is perhaps no better moment to appreciate than getting to see the band live in concert. Of course, you’ll have to have tickets first! The band’s fifth appearance on SNL for the Mother’s Day show included a pair of songs from their just-release sixth album, as well as a powerful message about abortion rights. Their first performance ran through “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid),” which contained a special Mother’s Day tribute, as well as a second, titanic, run through the scorched earth rocker “The Lightning I, II,” which ended with singer Win Butler making a statement about abortion rights in light of the May 2 leak of a Supreme Court draft decision signaling the possible overturning of the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.

A PREMIER EVENTS SPACE

We have multiple event spaces and offer a full calendar of opportunities for the public to visit the Arcade during public events. Visit the Dayton Arcade Events website for more information about booking your private event here at the Arcade.

AN INNOVATION CENTER

The Arcade is a collaborative center of big thinkers, dreamers, and doers. Anchored by The Hub Powered by PNC , we are an incubator for unique ideas and opportunities to put Dayton at the forefront of tomorrow's big innovations.

The Arcade isn't just a revitalized historic point-of-pride for downtown Dayton. It's a one-of-its-kind innovation center aimed to drive Dayton into the future. We’re a hybrid space for visitors and businesses to coexist and feed off of each other’s passions. The Arcade is more than a collection of incredible buildings; the Arcade is a gathering space for fostering unique connections to develop the ideas, partnerships, and organizations that will enrich the Dayton community.

WHAT THE ARCADE ISN'T

The newly revitalized Arcade is not a shopping mall, a food court, nor a public square. While it is still a “mixed use” space, the mix now leans more heavily toward private than public usage. So while there’s a lot to see and even more to come, this is not the same Arcade you remember from long ago.

AN INDOOR SHOPPING MALL

Sure we will have retail shopping, but the focus of the Arcade is no longer retail.

A FOOD COURT

We are excited to bring you a wide array of dining experiences. However Murray’s Fish Market is unlikely to return, and our restaurants will all have exterior entrances.

A VIDEO GAME ARCADE

This has long been a source of confusion for kids looking for PacMan and Dig Dug in the 1980s. The Arcade is not, nor ever has been, a video game arcade.

THE ARCADE OF THE PAST

The Arcade has gone through a number of transformations since its development in 1914, but none of thme have been quite like this. The Arcade is a historical renovation, so while it may look very much as you remember it, the new Arcade is a much different vision.

THE JEWEL OF THE GEM CITY

The Arcade is renowned for its 90-foot diameter glass Rotunda that many consider the most spectacular piece of architectural history in the Dayton region. Meticulously restored to its original detail and beauty with a 2020 twist, the Rotunda is sure to be a destination point for those who are drawn to its architectural majesty.

The Rotunda serves as the interior connector for all nine buildings in the Arcade complex.

It is important that you plan your visit to the Arcade in advance and check with individual tenants to see their hours of operation. Not all areas of the Arcade are currently open to the public.

For Mark Lord, the Burlington Arcade is a capsule of the city, representing that little bit of England that the world knows. On each tour, guests are immersed in the 200+ years’ worth of history, uncovering hidden gems of the arcade, such as the Victorian stoves in the basement and the secret underground passageway where shop boys would scurry with packaged goods for customers awaiting in their carriage, prohibited from carrying their purchases.

The Beadles were originally hired as guards by Lord Cavendish’s regiment, and today they monitor the arcade as the oldest and smallest police force in Britain. As Head Beadle, Mark Lord’s unparalleled knowledge leads visitors on an exploratory journey transporting them right back to the arcade’s opening in 1819, originally commissioned by the Earl of Burlington to provide a safe place for his wife to shop.

‘When you walk through the arcade, you can actually feel the energy coming out of the shops. The building does have its own sort of spirit, its own sort of feel to it’ – Mark Lord, Head Beadle.

SEGA Arcade (JDT Recommends)

Arcade paradise | akihabara.

Arcade Paradise | Akihabara

Club Sega is one of the most popular arcade chains in Tokyo to enjoy. There are multiple locations in Tokyo, with many found in the lively Akihabara Electronic's Town. Each arcade is equipped with hundreds of games, prizes, and capsule machines to keep both kids and adults entertained for hours. SEGA arcades are typically split into separate sections based on the types of games available. Some SEGA arcades even feature areas dedicated for competition and tournaments for the truly skilled video game players. Many of the SEGA Arcades have multiple floors lined with great gaming options, so you're going to want to spend some time exploring while you're there.

Tokyo's Favorite Arcade

Tokyo's Favorite Arcade

In addition to popular racing games and shooters, a SEGA arcade will typically have a well stocked UFO-Catcher section and plenty of Taiko games. Both are staples found in almost all Japanese arcades around the country. Interestingly, while it is a SEGA arcade (owned and operated by the SEGA Corporation), there are more than just games from SEGA for guests to enjoy. SEGA arcades constantly update their games to ensure guests have an enjoyable time gaming. There may be different prizes available at different arcades, so it helps to visit more than one during your Tokyo tour. Some SEGA arcades are beginning to include Virtual Reality offerings to their gaming experience, only adding to the appeal of Japan's arcades. There's sometimes a wait, but these VR games are definitely worth the experience. Interested in gaming at the SEGA arcade? As you may or may not know, Arcade Fire has built a strong reputation for being one of the best live bands out there today. Since their release of "Funeral" in 2004 they have been building an arsenal of captivating, energizing, and flat-out intense music that in my opinion was made complete (at least for now) with "Reflektor" in 2014. On their "Reflektor Tour" they epitomize all set lists with their perfect mix of past and present Arcade Fire.

At the concert I attended in DC they opened with "Afterlife" perfectly setting the mood for the rest of the show; it was energetic but not over the top (we needed to save our energy for songs like "Normal Person" "Month of May" and "Ready to Start") and all the fans were able to sing along to the chorus, connecting us to the band right from the start. Needless to say, we were all giddy with excitement after the opener.

While there were a fair share of intense songs you can't help but loose control during, there were also some beautiful moments, specifically during "It's Never Over (Hey Orpheus)." Win begun the song as usual at the stage up front, but Régine (Win's wife and co-lead singer for those that don't know) had mysteriously disappeared. Then we heard her voice from a different stage in the center of the GA area. This was cool because Win and Régine were separated and then during the really beautiful part of the song they would reach out for each other, only to be unsuccessful in reuniting, bringing the meaning of the song to life in a way.

Through all of the intense and beautiful moments, Arcade Fire, after two hours of practically non-stop music, arrived at the finale. Let me tell you, this is something so majestic, so empowering yet humbling, so down to earth, it doesn't deserve to be written about. You need to experience it. Live. All that was left for me to say after the show was that Arcade Fire truly deserve their reputation for being perhaps the best performers out there today.

"It's a bunch of geeks playing ****ing art music. It shouldn't have been any ****ing good. But they were ****ing amazing". Such was the reaction of the gentleman behind me after my first Arcade Fire gig, at Manchester Academy in 2005, and I certainly wouldn't disagree.

Back then, the most successful alumni of the mid-Noughties golden age of Canadian music really were stereotypical art-school types, all embroidered blazers and harps and stilted, awkward banter. But my word, put them on a stage and they'd blow your ****ing mind.

"Wake Up", with its peerlessly anthemic chorus delivered with almost religious fervour. The cacophonous, punky "Laika", with Richard Reed Parry using every hittable object on stage as an impromptu drum kit. "Haiti", with its eminently danceable groove belying the darkness of its lyrics. And "In The Backseat", a song that rendered a 1500-strong audience utterly mute, and concluded with the audience spontaneously carrying on its closing refrain for two full minutes after the band had left the stage. It was exhilarating. It was revelatory. It was sublime.

Since then, I've seen them in churches and stadiums and muddy fields and on one memorable occasion, a BBC studio. I've seen their sound change and evolve with each album (the disco influenced "Reflektor" is a whole different beast to the stripped back Americana of "The Suburbs", which in turn is a massive shift from the dense and ostentatious "Neon Bible", not to mention the rough-edged beauty of "Funeral"). I've seen their audiences grow bigger each tour, not to mention their collection of industry awards. But what has remained a constant is their dedication to putting 110% into their live shows.

Last night, I saw Arcade Fire for the 27th time. It was just as joyous and vital as the first.

CitizenMeh’s profile image

Arcade Fire at the Forum was an amazing experience. This was my first time seeing them live and I think they were meant to play big venues. Seeing as this was a part of their "Reflektor Tour" I thought this was going to be mostly new songs, but they made sure to play a wide range of songs, even a few from Neon Bible, which surprised me.

I knew it was going to be a good show when the announcer came out to introduce the band in a full mirrored disco ball suit and the band opened with Reflektor, making sure anyone who had just recently heard of them would get into the show. They continued with plenty of hits from each of their albums like "The Suburbs", "Ready to Start", "No Cars Go", etc. But for each of the songs from their newest album had little fun tidbits like guys in high heels vogue dancing to "We Exist" and Regine appearing on the secondary stage in the middle of the crowd for "It's Never Over." But they really brought it home when in the middle of "Here Comes the Night Time" they completely covered the crowd in the most confetti I have ever seen. It was definitely a dazzling spectacle.

There were a few other strange tidbits like having "The Reflektors" play Rage Against the Machine before Arcade Fire came back out for their encore as well as dedicating a song to Axl Rose. All in all the night was amazing and came to a very climactic end when the whole stadium echoed with the audience singing "Wake Up" at the top of their lungs. It was probably one of the best concert experiences I have ever had. In summation, if you want to see something very different and have stories to tell for years to come, I would highly recommend seeing Arcade Fire live. They were born to play stadium shows and I think they will only be playing bigger and bigger venues from now on.

Arcade Fire was absolutely amazing. Half an hour before the doors opened, a tour guide recruited me to dance for them and she took me backstage. I saw Regine Chassagne in a hallway and I said Hi and she was a little surprised but said Hello back. Then I got to put on a Regine bobblehead and opened the pit at Barclay's Center and danced to the opening act for about fifteen minutes. When AF came on, they opened with Reflektor, possibly their top song in that album and everyone was boiled over to see someone in a full on Reflektor suit on the little elevated stage in the middle of the arena. The set list consisted of crowd favorite songs from the Suburbs and Reflektor, a little rendition of My Body Is A Cage and of course the famous Wake Up from the album Funeral. Regine Chassagne was graceful and adorable everytime she danced, especially wearing a silver cape as Joan during Joan of Arc. Win Butler was very friendly with the crowd, trying on a fan's masquerade mask and shaking everyone's hand at the barricade when the show ended. Arcade Fire had lots of surprises and treats for their fans, great band with incredible talent and yet still so humble.

mynameishurricane’s profile image

Although I was quite far away from the stage, Arcade Fire did not fail to blow my mind at Verizon Center in Washington DC last night. The show was full of surprises with outstanding costumes, and moving sets with synchronized lights. Even from 50 feet away from the stage I felt the excitement from the band, as well as the rest of the arena and I could not stop singing, dancing, fist-pumping... It was an experience I'll never forget. Only a band like Arcade Fire could make an entire arena of hundreds of people feel connected. Their albums, all unique, have such beautiful songs with powerful lyrics. You can feel the soul they put into the words as they sing them to the crowd.

Watching the crowd move as one and sing as one when the band started Wake Up gave me chills and I couldn't help but smile and pour my soul into singing along, (even though the band was so far away from me). Even without the lights, the costumes, the decorations like mirrors and a disco ball, the colorful, intense backgrounds, and the glitter and confetti, Arcade Fire would've been just as amazing.

Shrimpshrimp17’s profile image

They say perfection doesn't exist, well that's wrong when it comes to Arcade Fire. The show was perfect, almost surreal- definitely the concert of the year by far. The set list on the Wednesday show was as of it was made for me, playing songs I never thought I would hear live, it was an emotional experience. The lighting, costumes, music transitions, props was amazing, and the boxing type ring stage was incredibly clever, allowing them to be closer to the fans and yet providing a different show on every side. Words can't explain what I felt during and after the concert, it was playful, clever, emotional, energetic- Such an amazing band, I'm so glad I found them- I don't know how I was alive before finding them. They have such an incredible stage presence, I really truly recommend seeing them if you have the chance- they unite all ages and create magic and unity.

Night #2 of Arcade Fire's Brooklyn stand at the Barclay's Center did not disappoint. The massive arena show proved that Arcade Fire has successfully translated the energy of their indie early days to the big and shiny stages of the masses. The set list, leaning heavily on the new Reflektor and the now classic Funeral album was energetic and driving interspersed with a few of the more popular tracks from The Suburbs. The band did not let off the gas from the halfway point on, and the encore saw New York's own Marky Ramone take the stage to play drums as the band ripped through Ramones classics "I Don't Wanna Go Down in The Basement" and "I Wanna Be Sedated." As the confetti fell and the last notes of "Wake Up" rattled off the rafters a satiated NYC crowd was invited to stay and dance, though most quickly filed out into the night time, buzzing.

Arcade Fire played an absolutely electric show at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, leaving the crowd buzzing with more energy at the end than it already had at the start. Arcade Fire began their set with a Devo cover, which was a very nice tribute since Devo had to cancel that night due to a "kayaking accident." They covered all the bases, even playing older hits such as Rebellion(Lies). It truly was one of the best musical experiences I've ever had; the sound quality was unparalleled, the light show and visuals were engaging, and the jamming at the end of songs like Reflektor, Here Comes the Night Time, and Wake Up is what going to live shows is all about. The paper mache heads and ridiculous confetti just added to the effect. 10/10 would see again. Thanks Arcade Fire, best Wednesday night ever.

Well, as a show, it was one of the best ones I've ever been to, with spectacular mirror plays and great enphasis from the members of the band, who move from side to side of the stage (I think at least one of them was high on drugs, or was it just part of the show?). "It's never over" was fantastic to watch live, you can feel the synthony between Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. Problem is, I was so close to the stage that I couldn't enjoy the music itself: the soundcheck had been done badly, so that the bass would cover every other sound sometimes, and it seemed to be overdriven. But the way the crowd was taken by the concert was amazing, never seen anyone so close to their fans. I would have liked to follow their dress code, but, as you know, Rome is quite hot in summer.

Where Are New York’s Best Acoustics? We Took a Listening Tour.

The composer Michael Gordon and members of Mantra Percussion tested the piece “Timber” in resonant spaces around the city. Here is what they learned.

In the foreground a pair of percussive mallets and a wooden board. But the focal point of the picture is a man in a baseball cap and a down jacket. Behind him there are arches and you see a T-Mobile store.

By Joshua Barone

As three people struck wood with mallets under a viaduct in Queens during the morning rush hour one day in the fall, a man walked up and asked, “What do you call this music?” The players could have told him the title of the piece, Michael Gordon’s “Timber,” or given him some idea of the genre. But one, Caitlin Cawley, simply said, “Percussion.”

Cawley and her colleagues from the ensemble Mantra Percussion were at the viaduct, which runs along Queens Boulevard and under the 7 train, to test the sound of its vaulted ceiling. It was part of a project to perform “Timber,” an hourlong work from 2009, in man-made sites with idiosyncratic acoustics around New York City.

The result, called Resonant Spaces , begins on Sunday, with performances at three locations, followed by three more on April 21. In addition to the viaduct, they include Castle Clinton and Federal Hall in Lower Manhattan, and in Brooklyn, archways in Prospect Park and Dumbo, and a monument in Fort Greene Park. The free concerts will allow the public to hear New York the way percussionists do: as a limitless source of musical opportunity.

“Timber” was originally written for the Dutch group Slagwerk Den Haag. Six percussionists struck amplified two-by-fours — a take on simantras, planks of wood shaped to create specific tones, which have a history of being used in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

In the early performances of “Timber,” the simantras were made from pine, but Mantra Percussion has taken a different route. Michael McCurdy, a member, said that the score didn’t specify the wood. “When you are learning Xenakis , or anything,” he said, “when the composer says ‘wood block,’ the variety of sounds that can come from that instrument is vast.’”

For Resonant Spaces, “Timber” will be played with purpleheart — a wood so dense, McCurdy said, that the Mantra players exhausted and had to replace a circular saw for cutting the pieces. On that fall morning, he, Cawley and Joseph Bergen carried their boards and other equipment from location to location, on the subway and in rideshare cars, as they tested sites for the concerts to see where the piece would thrive.

They allowed me to join with a photographer, and to record audio at each stop.

Queens Boulevard Viaduct

Gordon described the viaduct’s grandly arched space as “really acoustically wild, almost fantastic.” As the players tested fragments of “Timber,” the sound ricocheted off the ceiling, shooting in all directions.

Under the Queens Boulevard viaduct

They tried different configurations — setting up their mounted boards close together, or far apart, in the center of the vaulted space or at the edge of it — as passers-by stopped to listen or interact with them. One woman wanted to give Cawley some cash.

Gordon was curious about a spot near the subway entrance, with a lower, flat ceiling. The sound wasn’t as spectacular, but the performance still caught the attention of a man who said with astonishment: “It’s wood. I’m walking over here wondering what’s going on, but it’s just wood. That’s astounding.”

After a brief pause, Gordon looked at him and, like any good New Yorker, said, “You know that you’re wearing a Red Sox hat, right?”

Endale Arch

After a car ride from Queens, the group arrived at the entrance of Prospect Park, and walked to the Endale Arch. The short tunnel, strikingly lined with alternating panels of pine and walnut, is one of the original architectural features from the park’s creation more than 150 years ago.

Under the Endale Arch

Under the arch, while runners, confused and frightened dogs, and school groups passed, Gordon and the Mantra players tried the most configurations of any location they visited that day. They found that the sound could be severe, but better if they let it reflect off one of the tunnel’s brick nooks, and best if they spaced out the instruments, especially at either entrance. McCurdy smiled as he asked the others whether they could hear overtones emerging from the resonance.

“It was a little harsh and loud,” Gordon said of the space. “It was amplifying the sound and also bringing out the bright overtones.” Milder, he added, was an area of Fort Greene Park in front of the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument, where the Mantra musicians had previously played “Timber.” (They will be back there on April 21). “That,” Gordon said, “is not particularly loud or reverberant, but it’s much more subtle and kind of beautiful.”

Federal Hall

The group then hauled its equipment onto the 2 train, getting out at the Wall Street stop to test the rotunda of Federal Hall, the first home of the U.S. Congress and the site of George Washington’s swearing in as president.

Inside Federal Hall

On the way, the percussionists played in the subway exit — a tinny corridor lined with tile — as well as in Kevin Roche’s postmodern lobby of 60 Wall Street (now closed for renovation and likely demolition), before arriving at Federal Hall. There was a school group visiting, and the children began to gather around the trio as they played. Afterward, the students asked to try for themselves, and took turns striking the wood.

Of the day’s stops, the rotunda was the most naturally reverberant. “It was so thick with reverb and delay that you could hardly make out what they were playing,” Gordon said. “The distinction was almost completely lost. The sound is bouncing off the walls and off the floor, and it just doesn’t stop. You’re just really drenched in sound.”

Bethesda Terrace

From there, it was back to the subway and up to the Upper West Side for a stop at Central Park, where the musicians made their way to the arcade under Bethesda Terrace. When they arrived, they had competition, not so much from the wedding party shuffling around for a photo shoot or the children’s entertainer making large bubbles, but from other musicians: Cover Story Doo-Wop , an ensemble of four vocalists and a bass player that had attracted a large audience.

Inside the Bethesda Terrace Arcade

But after being offered cash and cutting a deal for the Mantra players to be quick, Cover Story took a break and stood the side while the percussionists set up their instruments and got started. This heavily trafficked area of the park offered the most passers-by yet, but also the most indifferent ones; few stopped to listen, and no one stopped for conversation.

Gordon and the Mantra musicians decided not to perform in Central Park. It seemed chaotic, Gordon said, and he got the impression that they “were not going to get the feeling or the focus of people who actually showed up and wanted to hear it.”

AFTER A DAY of hearing “Timber” around New York, Gordon said that he didn’t think the spaces materially changed the music. “The piece is the piece,” he said. “I think it’s less about what places do to the piece as what it does to our awareness of the spaces we walk through.”

That’s what audience members, those who plan to attend or those who stumble across the performances, could get out of Resonant Spaces. “Walking through the viaduct is a phenomenal experience,” Gordon said. “But it’s one we all have. We go to the park and walk through a tunnel. Central Park is full of them. These places aren’t hidden. But their acoustical properties — those kind of are.”
