North Argentina: A Mind-Blowing, 9-Day Argentina Road Trip Itinerary

Photo of author

Planning to visit north Argentina? This 9-day road trip itinerary is the perfect introduction to this stunning region.

One of the amazing things about travelling in Argentina is the varying landscapes. And one of the places that most surprised me was north Argentina .

In fact, after a road trip through the region, it’s now my favourite place to visit in Argentina , and I find myself constantly recommending anyone who’s travelling to Argentina to put the north of the country on their itinerary.

Hiring a car and tracing the windy roads of the provinces of Salta and Jujuy on an Argentina road trip is the best way to experience northwest Argentina . Along the way you’ll see surprising rock formations, taste incredible wines and experience a culture that is distinctly different to other areas of Argentina.

This part of Argentina is a little off the beaten path , so if this sort of trip is up your alley, I’ve put together the perfect 9-day North Argentina itinerary to help you experience the highlights of this region. This follows the route that my husband and our friends took, plus some advice for things I’d do differently next time.

Seriously, if you’re thinking about visiting Argentina , please consider the north of Argentina – it blew my mind and I know it will amaze you, too!

North Argentina road trip logistics

Before we get into the details of the north Argentina road trip itinerary , here are a few logistics to consider.

You should also stop by and read my full guide to planning a trip to Argentina for some handy tips if it’s your first time visiting.

When to visit north Argentina

We travelled to north Argentina in early September and it was perfect. It wasn’t super hot during the day, but also not too cold at night (do I sound like Goldilocks?). We did wake up to frost some mornings. We needed jackets but they were often peeled off during the daytime.

The great thing about the timing of our trip was that it was low season, so it wasn’t very busy and the other tourists we saw were mostly Argentines.

Most people recommend April to November as the ideal time to visit north Argentina . Summer (December to February) can be too hot for most visitors.

No matter the time of year, do keep an eye on the weather, especially if rain is forecast. Heavy rains can cause roads to become impassable and it’s not uncommon for roads to wash away.

How to get to north Argentina

To do this trip, fly into Salta or Jujuy . We flew into Salta and did a sort-of figure eight loop beginning and ending there.

You could also mix up this itinerary to avoid looping back, and fly into Salta and out of Jujuy ; simply alter the order of the itinerary.

Aerolíneas Argentinas flies daily to Salta and Jujuy, as does low-cost carrier FlyBondi.

A panoramic shot of a winding valley in North Argentina with a dry riverbed snaking through, surrounded by lush green slopes and distant mountains.

How to get around northern Argentina

The best way to experience north Argentina is to hire a car and drive it yourself .

This gives you time to experience the north, stop in small towns that pique your interest, and relax as you drive around this beautiful area. It means you’ll also have the smaller towns without the crowds in the evenings.

We hired a car through a company that I think has now gone bust, so book online with DiscoverCars instead. They can collate all the car rental companies in Salta so you can choose the right one for you.

We had a teeny-tiny car that was fine for the four of us but was a little hairy in some parts. A four-wheel drive would have nice but not necessary.

I’ve got a full guide to renting a car in Argentina with my tips and tricks.

The thought of driving around north Argentina may be a little intimidating, so there are plenty of tours that can take you on multi-day trips or day trips to the highlights that I’ll be outlining in this blog post. A few that I’ve found online that come recommended are:

  • This day trip from Salta will have you exploring gorgeous Purmamarca and Salinas Grandes.
  • This 7-day tour hits the highlights of north Argentina with a side trip into the Atacama Desert in Chile.
  • Driving up to Iruya can be a little hairy, so consider this 2-day trip from Salta which visits Iruya and Purmamarca.
  • If you’re all about the wine, this day trip from Salta heads straight to Cafayate for all the vino.

But, if you can, I highly, highly recommend DIY-ing this one and renting a car for the ultimate Argentina road trip!

Tips for a north Argentina itinerary

So now, hopefully I’ve convinced you that a self-drive road trip is the best way to get around the north of the country. If you do go down this path, here’s some Argentina travel advice for a safe trip :

I don’t think a four-wheel drive is necessary, but it may give you piece of mind on the road to Iruya.

Check that your car has a spare tyre . We got a flat on our final day (ugh) and were thankful that we knew there was a spare in the boot/trunk. Having said that, make sure you actually know how to change a flat tyre! (The funniest part about our flat tyre is that it happened on the smoothest tarmac of our trip, not on the bumpy, rocky roads we’d traversed the days before!)

Fill up with fuel whenever you can. Distances can be long here and you don’t want to end up in the middle of nowhere with an empty tank.

It’s the law in Argentina to drive with your headlights on when on a highway – even during the daylight hours. If you don’t, expect a hefty fine.

While most of the towns along the way do have ATMs, bring cash . Cards aren’t accepted in all restaurants and you will need cash to purchase souvenirs sold in the marketplaces. Anyway, cash is always king in Argentina.

Always get travel insurance when you travel, especially to more remote areas.

North Argentina road trip itinerary

Let’s get into it! First up, here’s a map of the northern Argentina itinerary so you can visualise the suggested route that follows.

Map of northwest Argentina

Day 1: Salta

Off we go! We’re starting the Argentina road trip in Salta. They call this city Salta la Linda, and it’s easy to see why, with its beautiful buildings and peaceful plazas.

Make sure to visit the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña . One of the top things to do in northern Argentina , here you’ll see the mummified bodies of the sacrificed Incan children discovered in 1999 on the top of Llullaillaco mountain.

Only one of the three children is displayed at a time, mesmerisingly frozen in time. It’s incredible to see the details in their faces still so well preserved after hundreds of years.

You can easily pass a day wandering the streets, people-watching in Plaza 9 de Julio and admiring the city’s colourful churches . Join a walking tour to see the best of the city.

A historic church in Salta, Argentina, illuminated at night, showcasing its intricate architecture, with warm lighting accentuating its features. The city of Salta is known as Salta La Linda for its beautiful plazas and churches. Exploring these areas is one of the best things to do in Salta.

Where to stay in Salta

On our first night in Salta, we stayed in Design Suites Salta , a modern hotel with spacious bedrooms. It’s located within walking distance of the main area of the city. | Book your stay at Design Suites Salta today on Booking.com or Expedia

Another hotel that gets great reviews is Legado Mitico , a boutique hotel in the heart of the city. It’s a contemporary hotel with a old-world style and charm. | Check rates online

Where to eat in Salta

We ate steaks the size of our heads at El Charrúa (Caseros 221) – photo evidence below.

Also try Doña Salta (Córdoba 46) for empanadas and José Balcarce (Necochea 594) for traditional regional dishes.

A smiling woman - the author of this article - sitting at a restaurant table, holding a large plate with a grilled steak, typical Argentinian food. In Salta - like most of Argentina - you can eat steaks the size of your head!

Day 2: Iruya

Pick up your hire car in the morning and begin the 320-kilometre journey to Iruya , a tiny, cloud-shrouded town perched on the side of a mountain.

This town is waaaayyyyy north Argentina. It’s one of the more remote places to visit in Argentina , but worth it! The last 50 kilometres of the trip is on a bone-jarring dirt road that winds through, over and around mountains (so this is where a four-wheel drive might come in handy).

The journey will take you to 4,000 metres above sea level at the crossing between the Salta and Jujuy provinces, and comprises an array of stunning landscapes, from dusty flat towns to mountains rippled with layers of brown, red, green, purple and slate-grey earth.

A colorful signboard covered with various stickers at an elevation of 4000 meters above sea level in the province of Salta, North Argentina. Getting to Iruya is a challenge, but worth it.

In town, you can wander the cobblestoned streets or spend a few extra days hiking in the area. We stayed here only one night, but if you have the time, I’d recommend staying here for at least two nights , as the drive here is difficult.

Historic village in North Argentina with a church perched on a hillside, overlooking a steep road and houses, set against a backdrop of mountains and clouds. The town of Iruya is located on a cloud-shrouded mountain top in north Argentina.

If you haven’t already chowed down on them in Salta, you can try your first empanadas salteñas , crispy pastries filled with meat and vegetables. The empanadas in this region are different to those you’ll find elsewhere in Argentina.

My top tip: always ask for them fried (rather than baked). Not as healthy, of course, but so tasty.

There’s a small shop in the square opposite the church that sells stellar empanadas (unfortunately, I never wrote down the name of the shop!).

A single golden-brown empanada with a fluted edge is centered on a white plate, with a portion of a green glass visible in the upper left corner and set against a red background. You must try empanadas saltenas when you visit northern Argentina - they're delicious!

Note that this part of the trip is completely optional, because it is a tough drive. You could skip Iruya and spend an extra day in Humahuaca, Tilcara or Purmamarca instead.

Where to stay and eat in Iruya

Hotel Iruya is perched at the top of the hill (San Martín 641) . The restaurant serves surprisingly good food. | Check the latest prices and book your stay at Hotel Iruya online with Booking.com

Days 3 and 4: Humahuaca, Tilcara and Purmamarca

Get back in your car and return the same way you came, stopping along the way to have lunch in the photogenic town of Humahuaca. The restaurant Pachamanka (Buenos Aires 457) serves great tamales and traditional dishes.

You can pick up handcrafted goods here including blankets and rugs, pottery, clothing and ornaments. There’s certainly no lack of options for authentic souvenirs in north Argentina.

A colorful storefront with traditional textiles and handicrafts displayed outside. The sign above reads

Continue south to Tilcara where you can visit the Pucará ruins , a pre-Inca fortification.

This site was strategically chosen, as it offered views across the valley and plenty of chances to see any enemies approaching. Wander through the cactus-filled ruins, but be aware that it can be windy at times.

Overlooking view of a semi-arid landscape with a stone wall in the foreground and towering cacti, with rugged mountains under a clear sky in the background. In Tilcara in the north of Argentina, visit the pre-Incan fort of Pucara.

You can stay the night in Humahuaca or Tilcara, but we chose to base ourselves in Purmamarca.

Looming over this tiny town is the stunning Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of Seven Colours), one of the best places to see in Argentina.

Staying here overnight will allow you to visit the various viewpoints before and after the busloads of tourists that pour in for their photo opps of this Argentina tourist attraction have left.

A woman (the author of this article) stands with their back to the camera, overlooking a dramatic landscape of multicolored mountain slopes in shades of red, purple, and gray - this is the Cerro de Siete Colores (Hill of 7 Colours). A small village with terracotta rooftops is nestled at the mountain's base beneath a clear blue sky. The Cerro de Siete Colores in north Argentina is absolutely beautiful - base yourself in Purmamarca to see it before and after sunset when the colours are at their most rich.

On day four, take a day trip along the winding road to the Salinas Grandes . This is the second largest salt pan in the world. This is one of those Argentina destinations that few people know exist.

Guides will take you out to the flats (for a reasonable price, negotiate first). One of the most fun things to do in Argentina is practice your forced perspective photos in the Salinas Grandes (or fail to do so, as we did!).

A perspective of salt flats in North Argentina, showing a grid of shallow rectangular pools filled with clear blue brine water, with a vast white salt crust extending to the horizon. Visit the Salinas Grandes in northwest Argentina - the second-largest salt pan in the world.

Back in Purmamarca, do the easy hike around the base of Cerro de los Siete Colores to see its layered colours from all angles.

Where to stay and eat in Purmamarca

El Manantial del Silencio (Ruta Nacional 52, Km 3.5) is built to look like an old estancia. We stayed here and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a good restaurant serving local fish and meat. | Book online with Booking.com or Expedia

If you prefer to stay in Humahuaca or Tilcara, there are plenty of accommodation options. I recommend comparing prices on Booking.com and Expedia .

Days 5 and 6: Cachi

Get back on the road for more stunning north Argentina scenery, passing back through Salta.

Cachi is a charming village where you can take a few days to relax and wander the streets. It’s one of the best places to visit in Argentina to chill out. But if you’re after something more adventurous, local companies offer hiking and biking trips; ask around.

Head out to Miraluna (7 kilometres from Cachi in the small village of La Aguada) for a tour of the bodega. It’s one of the highest wineries in the world . Take a bottle (or two) of their great Malbec back to your hotel to enjoy with a picada plate (Argentina’s version of charcuterie).

A winding road stretches into the distance through a desert landscape under a dramatic sky with layers of mountains visible in the background in North Argentina. As you travel around northern Argentina, you'll be blown away by the scenery.

Where to stay in Cachi

La Merced del Alto (Fuerte Alto 4417) is a white-washed adobe building with ceramic-tiled floors. The service is detailed and attentive. | Book your stay at La Merced del Alto online

A white colonial-style building with a bell tower surrounded by agave plants, against a backdrop of mountains under a clear blue sky in North Argentina. Cachi is a charming village in north Argentina that's worth a day or two.

Where to eat in Cachi

El Antigal for cheap and delicious food. There’s no written menu, so the staff will simply verbally reel off a list of what they have available that day.

Days 7 and 8: Cafayate

More driving ahead of you. Stop by Colomé (18 kilometres west of the town of Molinos) for lunch and a tour of the mind-blowing James Turrell Museum . The museum displays Turrell’s works of light and perception. I’m completely unable to describe it in words so you need to see it for yourself!

Follow up lunch with a tasting of their famous wines. Advance bookings are essential. The road to Colomé is rutted and bumpy so carefully pack any bottles of wine you’ve bought as you leave!

After lunch, continue on to Cafayate. The journey will take you through the Quebrada de las Flechas , a lunar-like place with leaning limestone structures that resemble quivers of arrows.

Rugged, sharply eroded mountain terrain with sparse vegetation under a bright blue sky in the arid landscape of North Argentina. The Quebrada de las Flechas is one of the most out-of-this-world landscapes you'll see on a north Argentina road trip - it resembles quivers of arrows.

In Cafayate, hit as many wineries as you can possibly handle in two days. Start with San Pedro de Yacochuya (Ruta Provincial No 2, Km 6) , Piattelli (Ruta Provincial No 2, Km 3) and El Porvenir (Córdoba 32) .

I’ve written a guide to the best wineries in Cafayate , so check it out and plan your visit to Cafayate accordingly.

Try the Malbec and Torrontes-flavoured ice creams at one of the many stores around Plaza San Martín and pick up a box of alfajores at one of the stores nearby. Finish the day off at Chato’s Wine Bar (Nuestra Señora del Rosario 132) with a degustation of (more) wines and a picada plate.

Where to stay in Cafayate

Splash out for a room at Grace Cafayate (Ruta Nacional 40, Km 4340) . It’s located in a winery and has comfortable rooms. Ours had a huge bathtub. | Book your stay at Grace Cafayate online with Booking.com

Day 9: Back to Salta

Heading back to Salta, you’ll pass through the astonishing Quebrada de Cafayate . It’s one of Argentina’s most amazing drives. You’ll see colours of all tones in the rock formations that have been carved out by the Río de las Conchas.

Along the way, stop at El Anfitreatro . Here, you’ll most likely come across a musician using the natural amphitheatre to entertain visitors. Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat) is a huge cavern a little further along.

A large cave opening in a red rock mountain face with a small figure standing at the entrance for scale, under a clear blue sky in North Argentina. The final day of the north Argentina road trip will see you driving past amazing rock formations and landscapes.

End your north Argentina road trip back in Salta. You can either fly out that same day or stay another night to prolong your time in Argentina.

Wrap up: North Argentina road trip

You’ve probably picked up by now that North Argentina is my absolute favourite part of the country. I loved how different it was to other regions, particularly the south, and the ever-changing landscapes.

This is, in my opinion, one of the best road trips in Argentina.

While it’s not as visited as other regions, I can guarantee this region will capture your heart and you’ll leave Argentina wanting to come back!

Hi Rebecca, I have really enjoyed reading your posts about Northern Argentina. It has proved to be a great source of inspiration. We are travelling to Argentina in June for a month, flying to Bueno Aires, planning to take the bus to Iguazu falls then fly to Salta. We really want to do the 9 day road trip from Salta. But I have a concern about altitude sickness. My husband has a heart condition and we were advised by the doctor not to travel to Peru to view Inca trails so opted for Argentina. Could we be liable to altitude sickness in Salta? After Salta we want to fly to Mendosa for a week then fly to Sydney from Santiago . Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks

Thanks so much Debbie for the great feedback! It’s a stunning part of the country and well worth the visit. Salta is around 1,152m high (Machu Picchu is 2,430m high in comparison) so depending on your husband’s condition, he might experience some altitude sickness. Some parts of the area are higher so you would have to check each area and avoid the higher parts. It’s probably worth checking with his doctor just to make sure! Mendoza is much lower, about 740m. Your trip sounds fantastic, hope it’s great! Feel free to get in touch if you have more questions.

Amazing itinerary! I am considering doing this trip, but I will be solo as a 22 year old female. Do you think I will be safe- driving and otherwise? Any tips for doing this drive alone will be very helpful! Thank you so much 🙂

I felt really safe in the north. I’d take all the usual precautions and plan to stay in populated areas, make sure you always have a working phone etc. If you’re confident travelling solo, I think you will have a great time.

Thank you for all your thoughtful and informative posts. My wife, son and I are considering booking a last minute vacation to Argentina in late July/early Aug for two weeks. We are circling around 5 days in BA and 2 days in Ignatz Falls area. The other week, we were thinking of both some days in the North, as you explain above, and/or taking the ferry from BA to Montevideo to explore Uruguay while we are down in that area. We loved your article above, but feel a lot of the scenery is very reminiscent of the Southwest part of the US (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, etc.) which we have loved visiting and exploring multiple times. If we are looking to get the most out of our time when the amazing part of South America, would love your thoughts on where you might steer us for that additional week. Thanks in advance for your further thoughts and insight.

Hi Richard, thanks for the message! I also love the Southwest of USA and can see your point about the landscape being similar – but I can promise you, it’s so different! Throw in the different cultures and food and it’s a very different experience to travelling in that part of the country. I would definitely recommend going there! But if you do want to try somewhere else, heading over to Uruguay is fun, and you could hire a car if you have a week and spend some time exploring around Colonia, Montevideo and so on. Another option if you like wildlife is Ibera Wetlands. It might be a bit cooler in July/August and it is low season but I believe there’s still some good animal spotting to be had! Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for your itinerary! It’s really helpful! Just one question, did you drive to Salinas Grandes or join a tour? I’m a little confused as you said you had a guide to bring you out to the flats.

Hey! We drove to Salinas Grandes, but then you pick up a guide when you get there. There are several people at the “entrance” who will jump in your car. Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂

Oh, I so badly want to visit Argentina but never looked too much at the North, now I’ve got to visit. Salinas Grandes looks spectacular, so unique!

I think the north gets overlooked in favour of Buenos Aires, Patagonia and Mendoza. Which is good because it means the north is quieter 🙂 It’s so beautiful that way, I hope you get there!

Thank you for sharing, we found the post really helpful and informative for our upcoming travels to Argentina later this year.

Where are you going? Argentina is so amazing! So many things to do.

I’m always on the hunt for off the beaten track destinations, so this is perfect for me! I can’t believe how beautiful the landscape is!

I’m so happy we got to that part of the country, it truly is spectacular.

My goodness, I can’t get over this post! Such a beautiful road trip – Iruya looks so cute, and Cerro de los Siete Colores must be Argentina’s equivalent to Peru’s Rainbow Mountain – love the striation of colors. Just stunning! We were talking about possibly doing Argentina/Chile next year (possibly March), and this will be my go-to guide! Thanks for sharing your amazing adventures!

Yes, yes, yes you guys have to go!! Let me know if you have any questions. There are soooo many different places to visit.

Hello Rebecca, You are getting too good at this photography business. (I check in from time to time). Best wishes, Richard Dellman

Thanks Richard! I’ve known a few good photographers in my life that I’ve learned from 🙂

Best Of Northern Argentina

argentina nord tour

Explore the best of Buenos Aires, Salta, and Iguazu Falls on this 10-day family tour of Northern Argentina. In Buenos Aires, wander through picturesque neighborhoods, visit Salta and a ranch in Chicoana for a glimpse of Gaucho culture, experience a “Safari to the Clouds” during a two-day road trip by truck, and witness the magnificent splendor of Iguazu Falls. Thanks to Argentina’s strong Italian heritage, this is a country where family comes first, and when traveling in Argentina with your family, you’ll find plenty on offer for everyone to enjoy. All of the featured excursions, activities, and accommodations can be tailored in accordance with your personal wishes.

Buenos Aires

Your journey through Northern Argentina begins in Buenos Aires with a city tour designed specifically for families. Take a bus or subway to the remarkable San Telmo neighborhood where you will visit the Comic Strip Walk, which features sculptures of some of the country’s most loved comic strip characters.

In La Boca, with its amazing street art, brightly painted houses and tango dancers performing in the streets, walk through Caminito, where you’ll find street vendors, live music, and stalls selling trinkets.

Salta & Chicoana

Fly to Salta, a very attractive city at the foot of the Andes. Explore the beautifully preserved historic architecture and rich colonial history. Stroll down the main street as the sun sets, enjoy a drink al fresco and then visit one of the many excellent folk bars, where you can relish dinner, wine, and traditional live music.

Head to a ranch in the nearby town of Chicoana for some horseback riding and a taste of local life. Ride through the town and the endless tobacco plantations, and observe the local people harvesting and cultivating tobacco. Continue into a landscape of twisting rivers and green mountains, offering fabulous views. Return to the ranch for a real gaucho BBQ.

Overland Truck Journey

Your next best of Argentina adventure is a two-day road trip across North-Western Argentina aboard a Movitrack overland truck. Cross the high-altitude plains of La Puna, en route to the vast Salinas Grandes salt plains, and descend into the Canyon Cuesta de Lipan where the change in scenery is dramatic, transforming from high altitude desert to fertile highlands.

See the incredible Mountain of Seven Colors that rises up behind the town of Purmamarca, where you’ll spend the night. The next day, continue through more epic landscapes to Tilcara. Visit the ancient ruins of Pucará and the Huacalera. Cross the Tropic of Capricorn, getting a dazzling view of the colored Pollera de la Coya Hill in the sunshine. At Uquía, drop by the charming local church, and visit Humahuaca, before heading back to Salta.

Iguazú Falls

Your tour continues with a flight to Iguazu, where you’ll spend the next two days marveling at the mighty Iguazú Falls. Brazil can lay claim to about 20 percent of the falls, and Argentina to the other 80 percent.

This means that you get a bigger picture view of the falls from the Brazilian side, looking towards Argentina, but in Argentina you get closer to the falls and there is a larger area to explore. If you’re having the Iguazu Falls Brazil vs Argentina debate, both sides are incredible, and on this trip, you will get to spend a full day on each side. Hear the falls resonating through the rainforest and revel in the spectacle before returning to Buenos Aires for your final night.

Itinerary & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Welcome to Argentina!

Welcome to Argentina! For most travelers, Buenos Aires is the entry point to Argentina… and what an entrance it is: this vibrant city feels almost European! Its cosmopolitan population of Italian, Spanish, French, and many other nationalities, combined with stunning architecture, cultural activities, and attractive neighborhoods with small shops, cafés, and international restaurants, make the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming.

Upon arrival, our local representative will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. After settling into your accommodation in the trendy neighborhood of Palermo, the rest of your afternoon and evening is free for you to spend at your leisure. We recommend exploring the area near your hotel where you’ll be able to soak up the atmosphere of this thrilling city stopping off at one of the nearby boutique cafés or lively wine bars. Having found somewhere for dinner and experienced one of South America’s top restaurant scenes, explore Buenos Aires’ nightlife at one of the local wine bars in Palermo, add an exclusive wine tasting to your itinerary or, take a leisurely stroll back to your hotel.

Tip: Porteños eat dinner late; usually restaurants will open their doors around 20:00.

First Arrival in Buenos Aires Argentina

Highlights of Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is most enjoyable when it is explored on foot and the transportation is best by bus. Today you will get an overflow of tradition and culture that your family can truly experience just by walking past the small shops and restaurants lined along the footpaths. During the tour, you will experience these sensations accompanied by local insights from your very own private guide.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel or the Recoleta Cemetery. You will then take a bus or subway to the remarkable San Telmo neighborhood where you will visit the Comic Strip Walk – sure to pique your children´s excitement! The Paseo de la Historieta is dedicated to Argentine graphic humor and features sculptures of some of the country´s most loved comic strip characters. The most popular attraction on this trail is the sculpture of Mafalda at the corner of Defense and Chile. You will also have the opportunity to taste Buenos Aire’s famous Italian artisanal ice cream as well as the “choripan”, a traditional dish of sausage from the grill wrapped in bread.

You will then take a bus from San Telmo to La Boca Neighborhood. La Boca is alive with music, brimming with laughter and pulsating with tango beats. The high-energy area retains a strong European flavor due to the influence of early settlers who originated from the Italian city of Genova. You will then walk through Caminito (“little walkway”), which is a street museum and a traditional alley in La Boca. This lane has multiple thriving street peddlers selling art, buskers playing music, and stalls offering trinkets of every variety.

Afterward, your family will take another bus to Recoleta and visit the Recoleta Cultural Center. Built in 1732, it was originally the convent of the Recoleta monks. It later served as a hospital, military barracks, refuge for the homeless, and an elderly people´s home, until it was finally transformed into a cultural center at the end of the 1970s. Recoleta Cultural Center contains mixed showrooms with outdoor corridors that make travel enjoyable and fluid, with samples of art that are renewed periodically. Walking City Tour Buenos Aires

Towards the Eastern Andes

In the morning, your transfer will take you to the domestic airport for your flight to Salta.

Today you’ll arrive in one of the most popular destinations in Argentina for Argentineans. Salta, nicknamed ‘La Linda’ (“The Beautiful”),  is a very attractive destination at the foot of the Andes. Salta is celebrated as a hidden gem due to its colonial architecture, inviting weather, and stunning natural scenery. Upon arrival, after having settled into your accommodation, the rest of the day is free to enjoy the town, or relax and enjoy the blue skies and sunshine that are abundant in northern Argentina.

If you do have time, it is well worth booking a half-day city tour locally where you’ll learn about the city’s beautifully preserved historic architecture and rich colonial history. Salta really comes to life in the evening. Stroll down the main street as the sun sets, enjoy a drink al fresco and then sit down for dinner at one of the many excellent folk bars, where you can enjoy dinner, wine, and traditional live music.

Flying to Salta Argentina

Horseback Riding at Chicoana

Get a glimpse of real local life during this full-day horseback riding trip to Chicoana. Setting off from Salta with a small group, you’ll drive to a local ranch in the sleepy town of Chicoana, where you can grab a tasty breakfast before getting in the saddle.

First, you’ll ride through the town itself, watching daily life unfold around you, before entering true tobacco territory. Trotting alongside the endless tobacco plantations, you’ll see how the local people harvest and cultivate tobacco. Continuing further into the countryside, you’ll find yourself amidst a landscape of green mountains and twisting rivers, which you’ll cross on your trusty horse. You’ll climb up one of these mountains for a magical view from the top, before heading back to the ranch for lunch. Here, you’ll be treated to a real gaucho BBQ and, with a bit of luck, the gauchos will get out their guitars while you eat. Afterward, you’ll head back to Salta to spend the evening at your leisure.

Horseback Riding Adventure Salta

Safari to the Clouds

Take a 2-day adventure across North-Western Argentina aboard a Movitrack overland truck. The trip mixes the classic ‘Safari in the Clouds’ route with the panoramas of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, giving you the best of both worlds.

Setting off from the Movitrack office in Salta, you’ll cross the high altitude plains of La Puna, en route to the vast Salinas Grandes salt plains, and descend into the Canyon Cuesta de Lipan, dropping a whopping 2,000m over just 22 kilometers. With any luck, you’ll see condors swooping in the skies above.

Diving into the canyon, the change in scenery is dramatic, transforming from high altitude desert to fertile highlands. Eventually, you’ll pull into the picturesque village of Purmamarca at the foot of the famous Mountain of Seven Colors, where you’ll spend the night.

Driving Through High Desert To Purmamarca

Humahuaca Gorge and back to Salta

After a relaxed morning on day 2 of your truck tour, you’ll hurtle into more epic landscapes with jaw-dropping views. You will continue to Tilcara to visit the ancient ruins of Pucará and the Huacalera. From here, you’ll cross the Tropic of Capricorn, getting a dazzling view of the colored Pollera de la Coya Hill in the sunshine. Afterward, you’ll head for Uquía and drop by the charming local church, complete with beautiful paintings of the Arcabuceros Angels.

Around midday, you’ll reach Humahuaca, home to another important church and the Independence Monument, sculpted by Soto Avendaño. After taking a break for lunch (not included), you will be escorted back towards Salta.

Purmamarca Town Argentina

Arrival in Iguazu

At the designated time, your private transfer will take you to the airport for your flight to Iguazu.

Upon arriving in Iguazu, our local representative will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel. The rest of your day is free to spend at leisure. If your accommodation is located on the outskirts of the town, you can relax and enjoy the facilities of your accommodation. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to the center of town where you can walk down the main street of Puerto Iguazu, enjoying some of the local shops and cafes.

Flying to Iguazu Falls

Visit the Argentinean Falls

After breakfast this morning, you will begin your exclusive tour of the Argentinean side of Iguazu Falls. You’ll head towards the Iguazu National Park where you’ll climb aboard a small train at the entrance of the National Park – your first stop will be the ominously named Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo) which stands at over 262ft, making it the biggest waterfall of Iguazu! Having soaked up the enormity of the Devil’s Throat, your guide will take you along the wooden walkways and trails of both the upper and lower circuit. With over 270 separate waterfalls and the copious verdant jungle of Iguazu, exploring this Natural World Wonder of the World is one of the most unforgettable experiences.

The various trails that take you above and around the waterfalls are built a few feet above the jungle floor. These raised platforms not only protect the natural habitat of the jungle wildlife but will also take you to secluded viewpoints offering unimaginable views across the whole National Park. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure while visiting Iguazu, we highly recommend booking the optional (not included) Great Adventure rafting tour that takes you right under the rainbows and mist of Iguazu’s waterfalls. Make sure to pack a change of clothes or swimwear and a watertight bag for your valuables because you will get wet!

After a full day exploring Argentina’s side of Iguazu Falls, you’ll head back to the visitors’ center and from there, your transfer will take you to your hotel in Iguazu where the rest of your evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Devils Throat Tour Argentina

Brazilian Falls & Back to BA

Dive straight into the action this morning! Your private guide will take you to begin your exclusive tour of the Brazilian side of the Falls (make sure you bring your passport). Bordering Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, the Brazilian side of Iguazu offers a panoramic view of the Falls. On the Brazilian side, you’ll have an up-close and more direct view of the towering Devil’s Throat Waterfall. After the excursion, your private transfer will take you to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires.

Because Argentina is so big, this package takes you back to Buenos Aires for a night, before your flight back home. We will pick you up from the airport and take you to your hotel in the trendy neighborhood of Palermo.

You may wish to use the rest of today to stroll around the beautiful streets of Recoleta or, to the modern Puerto Madero Waterfront. If you want to take in a bit more culture, we recommend visiting the famous and beautiful Teatro Colon or the National Museum of Fine Arts (MALBA). You may also wish to visit the World Tango Museum, which is located above the legendary Café, the oldest café in town. This stunning cafe has been the meeting place for famous and influential Porteños for more than 100 years. The interior will transport you back to the Golden Age of the 1900s in Buenos Aires.

Learn more about Argentina

Food and drink.

Like many other aspects of Argentinian culture, its cuisine has been heavily influenced by European immigration. Mix Spanish and Italian flavors with Argentina's top quality (and affordable!) beef and dairy products, and you have a combination worth jumping on that long-haul flight for. Check our guide on all things food in South America .

It’s important to keep in mind that dinner is eaten late in Argentina. Most restaurants close in the afternoon and do not reopen until 8 pm, though locals typically don't actually begin dinner until 9 or 10 pm.

Here are some must-try dishes and drinks in Argentina:

With Spanish origins, asado describes succulent barbequed meat, slow-cooked on a metal frame over an open fire or a bed of hardwood charcoal. In Argentina, asado is equal parts a dish and a social gathering – both of which you'll want to experience.

2. Provoleta

Soft provolone cheese is grilled in a skillet and topped with oregano, chili flakes or other herbs. A typical asado starter, provoleta is crisp on the outside, warm and gooey on the inside and delicious all around.

3. Chimichurri

A piquant combination of diced garlic, chopped parsley and oregano, olive oil and vinegar, this classic Argentinean condiment is the quintessential accompaniment to grilled meat.

4. Malbec wine

Argentina has one of the world’s most renowned wine regions. Malbecs from the wineries of Mendoza are famous around the world (and happen to pair well with steak), though other provinces also produce quality wines, including Torrontes from Cafayate and Syrahs from San Juan.

5. Alfajores

Argentina’s favorite sweet biscuit. Take two round shortbreads, fill them with dulce de leche (a decadent caramel made from condensed milk) coat them in chocolate... et voila.

Argentineans take ice cream seriously. Don't miss helado de dulce de leche, the national flavor of Argentina.

7. Dulce de leche

Condensed milk is slowly reduced and sweetened to create a thick, sticky caramel. Find it in alfajores (a crumbly biscuit sandwich filled with dulce de leche), dessert empanadas, drizzled on ice cream or just eat it by the spoonful!

8. Yerba maté

This is Argentina's national drink. A caffeine-rich concoction of chopped and dried yerba maté is prepared in a gourd (maté) and drunk through a silver straw (bombilla). It's rich in antioxidants and polyphenols and has long been used by Indigenous people in South America.

Culture and customs

Argentinian culture and customs are influenced by the waves of European immigration that landed here in the 1880s and during the two World Wars. As a result of immigration, parts of the country feel notably more ‘European’ than other areas of South America.

Argentinians are famously affectionate, loud, passionate about football, and big fans of a good plate of homemade spaghetti. They have strong ties with family and friends, and the major religion is Catholicism.

As a general guide, these are some key things you should know about Argentina:

1. A kiss on the cheek is the most common way of greeting someone

Particularly a friend, but it’s not uncommon between strangers, especially if being introduced by a mutual friend. This is true whether it’s female on female, female on male or male on male.

2. If you befriend someone, expect hugs

Expect a farewell hug and a greeting hug thereafter. Again, this is true whether it’s female on female, female on male or male on male.

3. Expect to be late

Being late for social or cultural events is almost fashionable in Argentina, but it can be an annoyance for travelers.

4. Siesta time is still common

Siestas are particularly popular in provinces such as Mendoza, San Juan, Salta. Shops may close from 1pm to 4pm and reopen until around 8-9pm.

5. Dinner is late

Dinner with locals can be very late. Having dinner at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm is perfectly normal and accepted in Argentina, but can cause a few rumbling tummies with travelers. The best thing to do is keep some snacks with you and try and fall into the local pattern.

6. Nightlife is well and truly nightlife

Pubs, clubs and events don’t kick off until 1-2am…no kidding!

7. The majority of Argentinians are Catholic

Between 70-80% of the population are Catholic, and you should be respectful when visiting churches, cathedrals and religious events. The dress code at religious sites is quite relaxed and no one will get in trouble for attending mass in t-shirts, shorts and thongs. However, closed shoes and trousers are preferred. Swimwear is a big no-no and it can be very offensive to the locals.

8. Avoid talking about the Falkland Islands War

Talking about the Falkland Islands war still evokes raw emotions amongst Argentinians and it's well-advised not to raise the topic with people you don’t know.

Geography and environment

Bordered by  Chile ,  Bolivia ,  Paraguay ,  Brazil  and  Uruguay , Argentina is South America's second-largest country. With a vast range of natural environments, traveling in Argentina presents a revolving door of terrain and landscapes.

From giant glaciers, gushing waterfalls and snow-topped granite pillars of Patagonia to the green grasslands of the Pampas (not to mention the lofty Andes of the north to the steamy wetlands of the north-east), Argentina contains a wealth of biodiversity.

Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over Patagonia. Check out our guide to help you decide which South American country to visit .

Top 5 tango spots in Argentina

1. confiteria ideal.

Be charmed by the grand building, old waiters and genuine tango classes that this Buenos Aires institution has been producing for more than 100 years. It might be a bit rough around the edges, but authenticity is guaranteed in this historic gem.

2. Barrancas de Belgrano

On the weekends, head to this leafy park at dusk to see unpretentious locals tango as the sun sets. Try out your tango steps, mix and mingle with Argentines and tourists, and enjoy the casual, fun vibe that proliferates under the park's gazebo.

3. Plaza Dorrego

This relaxed San Telmo favorite is a top spot for alfresco people-watching, tango viewing, wine drinking and socializing.

4. La Catedral

For a slice of old Argentina, head to this bewitching warehouse of kitsch where you can learn the art of tango with locals amid walls of old posters and a giant glowing, red heart. Lessons are taught in Spanish, and while the dancers here may not be technically great, their passion and love of tango are unquestionable.

5. Caminito

Purists may dismiss La Boca's showy street performers as 'tacky tangoists', but the colorful streets, flamboyant moves and suave outfits do have a bit of flair and provide quintessential Buenos Aires photo ops.

Many stores in Argentina allow travelers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you're leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

It’s a bit of a lengthy process, but it might be worth the effort depending on how much shopping you do.

Keep in mind that siesta is still common in some parts of Argentina. Many stores will close for a few hours in the afternoon and reopening times can be unpredictable.

Things to buy in Argentina

1. Leather goods

Leather goods are normally top of the shopping list for every traveler – and rightly so! The quality of leather products is excellent and prices can be significantly cheaper than at home. The most popular items are jackets, handbags, shoes, boots and belts. A word of warning though – be wary of cheap imitations!

2. Mate cup set

A popular tourist shop item, cups may be sold on their own with a straw, or as a set with loose-leaf mate as well. Quality and design can vary, so it pays to shop around.

A good bottle of Argentina’s famed Malbec can be bought for less than USD 10.

Festivals and events

Argentinians are a lively bunch and like to party. Below are four of the biggest festivals of the year.

1. Buenos Aires Tango Festival - August

Passion oozes from Buenos Aires’ streets as tango fills the city each August. Open-air milongas (dances), film screenings, dance classes and competitions featuring world-class dancers are all part of this sizzling two-week event.

2. Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival) - March

This week-long celebration kicks off Mendoza’s grape-picking season, and it's a barrel of fun! The festival features parades, folkloric events and a grand coronation, as hopefuls vie to be chosen as the new Harvest Queen.

3. Carnaval (or Carnival) - February/March

Huge crowds turn up ready to have a good time for carnival celebrations in cities across Argentina. Like in Brazil, parades are a cacophony of colors, featuring feathered and sequined costumes and elaborate floats. Taking place right before Ash Wednesday, the best parties are in Gualeguay-chu and Corrientes.

4. Dia de la Tradicion (Day of Tradition) - November

Argentina’s beret-clad, nomadic cowboys, otherwise known as gauchos, are something of a national symbol. Each year on November 10th, they are celebrated with horsemanship shows, folk music, dancing, tons of barbequed meat and a big gaucho parade in San Antonio de Areco, the symbolic center of gaucho culture.

Must-see cities in Argentina

Buenos Aires is an elegant metropolis of colorful buildings, charming boulevards and cobbled laneways that lead to huge street murals. When is the best time to visit Argentina?

Spanning over 2400 miles from its subtropical north to its subpolar south, the climate in Argentina is as diverse as its landscapes. Summer (December to February) is the best time to visit Patagonia as the weather is mild and hiking trails are accessible.

In contrast, Buenos Aires can be very hot, humid and busy in summer, so autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) may be better if you don't enjoy the heat or want to ditch the crowds.

Autumn is also a stunning time of year in Patagonia and Mendoza when golden colours dominate the landscape.

Iguazu Falls is spectacular all year, but it's a sight to behold in the wet season from December to March when monsoon rains create even more powerful cascades.

If you want to do an Antarctica cruise from Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, the season runs from November to March when temperatures rise and sea ice melts enough to enable access for cruise ships.

Do I need a visa to visit Argentina?

Most travelers do not need a visa to enter Argentina. This includes visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland and most other Western European countries.

Visa-exempt travelers will usually receive an entry stamp valid for 90 days on arrival. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Argentina.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

As a whole, Argentina is a welcoming destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. In 2010, the country became the first Latin American nation to legalize same-sex marriage and Buenos Aires hosts the largest annual gay pride parade in South America.

A number of hotels, B&Bs, bars and nightclubs catering to the LGBTQIA+ community can be found in Buenos Aires as well. Though parts of the country, particularly smaller towns, are less tolerant. When in doubt, use discretion outside of large cities.

ROAM has been operating trips in Argentina and Chile for more than a decade. We regularly explore Torres del Paine and Fitzroy with guests and operate deluxe lodge-to-lodge trips in the Lakes Districts among other locales. Over the years, we have met and collaborated with many wonderful people in Latin America. One of these amazing characters is Diego Valsecchi, co-founder of Desafio Winery in Cafayate, Argentina.

Diego is an Argentine renaissance man. He can grow a garden and grapes, make award-winning wine, kayak any stretch of river imaginable, raise sheep, butcher them and then hand craft a wood-fired parrilla and pizza oven to bake you fresh bread, pizza and grill the lamb to perfection. In his spare-time he is an attentive father and loving husband. To say that Diego deserves all these accolades is an understatement.

Throughout our time working together in Futaleufu and parts of Patagonia, Diego has raved about his homeland in Argentina. He is passionate about many things but particularly the Cafayate region where he co-founded his winery. Subsequently, ROAM is delighted to be partnering with the Valsecchi family to introduce our newest multi-sport adventure. Miraculously, we’ve been able to contain many of Diego’s ideas into one exciting adventure.

We’ve planned an active multi-sport exploration of Salta and Cafayate’s wine regions that offers hiking, biking, rafting, tastings, harvesting and, in ROAM style, many incredible dining experiences. For those feeling even more adventurous, there’s a 6 day/5-night extension into more remote parts of the desert and salt flats. Let us also say, this is not your typical holiday. This trip will be spontaneous, intimate, challenging, decadent and fun as we explore a part of Argentina few know but none ever forget once experienced.

What to Expect on the Lakes District Multi-Sport

Day one: arrive salta – check into hotel and explore regional cuisine..

A ROAM representative will meet you at the airport and bring you to our hotel. For those arriving early, if you only hit one museum in the city, Museo Arquelogia de Alta Montana should be it. Dedicated to anthropology and preserving Andean culture, the biggest draw of the MAAM are the mummified Inca children discovered by scientists in 1999 at the Llullaillaco Volcano. The three children were perfectly preserved by icy conditions at the summit after historians believe that the Incas sacrificed them as an offering to the gods in a fertility ceremony around 1490. Their hair, clothes, and even internal organs remained intact due to the excellent preservation. Though it’s a small museum, there’s lots of artifacts and insight into Incan culture and mountain archaeology with excellent English descriptions.

Tonight, we’ll venture out for some truly regional cuisine. That includes locro (a hearty stew of meat, corn, and potatoes), humita (steamed husks filled with corn and cheese), and tamales (steamed leaves filled with corn flour, meat, and potatoes). We can find these dishes at traditional family-run restaurants, street vendors, and markets around the city. We’ll visit Mercado San Miguel where you can wander amongst the produce and meat vendors, buy artisan cheeses, nuts, and regional sweets then visit La Viejas Estación for traditional Salteño cuisine and live music.

Overnight Salta – Legado Mitico Salta Hotel Boutique

Day Two: Horseback ride, mountain bike & hike options near San Lorenzo

Today we will visit a nature reserve in the popular Villa San Lorenzo. Cooler and more humid, than Salta, it’s where the high-altitude forests (las yungas) begin. The village is also popular place for Argentine summer homes. We’ll enjoy the natural surroundings by hiking along the paths to viewpoints, going horseback riding or mountain biking, or simply enjoying some wine  alongside the river and waterfall. Later we’ll stop at El Castillo de San Lorenzo, a lovely historic hotel and restaurant, for a regional meal amidst the lush surroundings. In late afternoon we’ll return to Salta for dinner and get ready for our next adventure.

Salta claims to be the birthplace of empanadas in Argentina, or at the very least, it’s rumored to have the best ones. Either way, you should definitely go on a quest to eat as many empanadas salteñas as possible while you’re here. So how are they different from typical empanadas? Salteñas are usually baked in a clay oven, they’re a bit smaller than others, and they’re usually filled with sliced beef (rather than minced) that’s mixed with things like onions, potatoes and egg. You can also find them filled with stewed chicken or cheese and onions. In Salta, they’re accompanied by a spicy tomato and pepper dip.

While Salta’s nightlife is much more laid back than the intensity of Buenos Aires, Calle Balcarce is still a fun place to have a great dinner, drinks at a bar or two, and then make your way to a discotheque for some dancing… but not until around 1 AM of course.

Day Three: Calchaqui Valley and Juramento River, enroute to Cafayate

Today we’ll depart Salta and head towards Cafayate. Along the way we’ll stop to river raft the Juramento River through steep canyons and class II and III rapids. The rapids form below the Cabra Corral Dam where there’s a reservoir created by several rivers in the Calchaquí Valley. If time permits, we might hike down the trails surrounding the reservoir to look for dinosaur footprints and ancient rock paintings. Tonight, we’ll overnight in Cafayate at Patios de Cafayate Wine Hotel. Situated next to a winery this 32 room, upscale and antique-laden hotel delivers wine-fueled R&R, whether you’re sipping vino poolside or indulging in the complimentary sparkling wine served each afternoon.

Day Four: Visit the Wine Museum, explore local wineries by foot

For education about the wine region, the Museo de la Vid y el vino (Museum of Vine and Wine) offers a multimedia-driven exhibit on area wine growing and winemaking history and traditions. The first part of the museum deals with the life of the grapevines and viticulture using a series of images and poems. The second section teaches visitors about the winemaking process and displays some of the equipment used by producers. You’ll want to visit before you hit the vineyards to learn all about why the grapes grow so well in this high-altitude climate.

Most of Cafayate’s winery options are set within walking distance. Today we’ll stroll to Bodega Nanni, Bodega Domingo Hermanos, Tierra Colorado and El Porvenir de Cafayate for vineyard and cellar tours, as well as tastings of elegant local wines like malbec, tannat, and torrontés. Cafayate is renowned for the Torrontés grape which is only grown in Argentina, so we’ll be sure to try the crisp white wines it produces. For lunch, we’ll enjoy an outdoor terrace while grazing over a variety of small plates, like baked macaroni and cheese with truffle oil, beef empanadas, or bandiola, an Argentinean pork shoulder sandwich.

Overnight Patios de Cafayate Wine Hotel

Day Five: Explore outlying vineyards by bicycle (with vehicle support)

Today we’ll bike to Finca las Nubes, El Porvenir de los Andes, Amalaya, Bodega Etchart, and many more! A short bike ride north of town, Burbujas de Altura serves sparkling wine made with 100 percent torrontés. To the south, we’ll visit Bodegas Etchart, which dates back to 1850 and pours award-winning wines in a gated-off ranch setting. A 15-minute ride into the hills leads to the modern Piattelli Vineyards, where you can sit on the gorgeous open-air terrace overlooking the vineyards to taste through a variety of wines while indulging in traditional Argentinian lunch fare. Or just over a mile from the town center at Bodego El Esteco, founded in 1892, taste a range of signature local varietals at the transporting colonial-era property, set behind grand iron gates. We may tack on a meal at the on-site restaurant La Rosa, where they sometimes grill whole goats and use fresh vegetables and herbs from their garden. Or for something more casual, La Casa de las Empandas is all about—what else?—empanadas, but some of the best you’ll have. For traditional Argentinean grilled meats, we’ll visit the authentic Parrillada El Gallito for a no-frills grill to get our fill. And we’ll be sure to hit one of the heladerias (ice cream parlors) on the square for another local favorite: wine-flavored ice cream and sorbet.

Day Six: Cascada del Rio Colorado

A great half-day hike for the adventurous minded, we have a choice to cycle or drive out to the trailhead where we’ll start this trek up to several beautiful waterfalls. An enjoyable but challenging trek, this route requires river crossings, some scrambling and lots of adventurous obstacles along the way. The entire trail will lead you to 7 waterfalls, so bring your bathing suit to take a dip and cool off.

Next, the Quebrada de las Conchas is home to some of North Argentina’s most mesmerizing landscapes, famous for its jagged rock formations and dramatic multi-colored cliffs. Today’s hike will take you to all the most memorable viewpoints, including the Garganta del Diablo, the Amphitheatre, Los Castillos, La Punilla, and La Yesera.

Overnight Grace Cafayate – This luxurious resort consists of a hotel with 12 rooms, as well as 20 private villas, which look over surrounding vineyards. On the grounds, you can visit the spa, play a round of golf, or ride horses through the valley setting, overlooking the Andes.

Day Seven: Wine Harvest

Today we will participate in the grape harvest and have a gourmet lunch at Desafio Vineyards.

This will be the highlight of the trip with many surprises. Diego says it best…

“At the heart of Valsecchi Wines, our commitment is to handcraft wines that express the true soul of the vineyard, producing the finest wine the vine can inspire. We apply biodynamic principles, working harmoniously with nature’s energy and the rhythm of our cosmos. We place utmost value in environmentally-friendly, low-impact practices.”

Wine Art is the expression of Diego’s winemaking philosophy. This starts with the accurate timing of hand-harvesting the grapes, where the soul of the wine appears. Part of that soul is derived from the synergy of family and friends who dedicate themselves to the harvest each year. Their contributions bring the most amazing energy to the wines. Respect for the grapes by not compromising quality for quantity infuses this soul.

“Making wine is my offering to everyone. It is my art, it is how I translate this inspiration through my hands” as expressed by the founder, Diego Valsecchi.  “Bringing forth the soul of the wines is the challenge we remain committed to, our Desafío”.

Overnight Grace Cafayate

Day Eight: Day in the desert – National Park Los Cardones

For those who are leaving us today, we’ll take scenic drive back to Salta via Cachi. This is a great adventure to finish the trip as it takes up to see what the vast expanses of salt flats and winds through Parque Los Cardones. We’ll see where salt is mined from a dried lake while you take those obligatory perspective photos on gleaming, high-altitude flats. We’ll arrive into Salta in the late afternoon for flights homeward.

Volcano, Deserts & Salt Flats Extension

Day eight: purmamarca hike.

For those doing the extension, today we will drive 5 hours and then hike in to the hotel in Purmamarca called Hotel El Manantial del Silencio. Featuring a large garden with a swimming pool at the foot of the Hill of Seven Colours, the hotel offers bright and spacious mountain and garden view rooms and a wellness centre. A massage or spa treatment may be a welcomed treat after the journey.

Overnight Hotel El Manantial del Silencio

Day Nine: Purmamarca – Tolar Grande

Today we go from Purmamarca to San Antonio de los Cobres (3350 m). Along our journey we will go through Salinas Grandes, and then we keep driving on the highlands to San Antonio de los Cobres. The road goes through the so-called Labyrinth Desert, a clay, pink dust and gypsum crystals formation. Later, just before reaching Tolar Grande, we will see Salar of Arizaro and one of the most amazing views of the Andean range, with Llullaillaco and Socompa volcanoes. Arriving at Tolar Grande is a wonderful surprise as this village of 200 souls living at 3200 meters above sea level is lost between the salt desert and volcanoes. Dinner and breakfast the following day are prepared and served at a local house.

Overnight Casa Andina

Day Ten: Tolar Grande – Antofalla – El Peñon

Today we’ll travel from Tolar Grande to El Peñon going through some incredible landscapes at high elevation. It’s an early departure driving through Salar de Arizaro but there’s time for a visit to a natural pyramid with volcanic origins known as Cono de Arita. Continuing our trip through Campo Amarillo to cross over later the Antofalla Salt Lake and its respective” forgotten town”. This salt flat will amaze you with its beautiful landscape. After lunch in a “local house” the journey continues crossing the Salt Lake to a viewpoint of the entire region. After a photo stop, we’ll continue through the Calalaste gorge were the main feature is its animal life dominated by vicuñas and suris. We will arrive in Antofagasta de las Sierras by mid-afternoon. This region is known for its volcanic activity and allows us to appreciate the amazing geology surrounding us. It’s also the place with the highest concentration of vicuñas in the country.

Overnight Hosteria El Peñon

Day Eleven: Pumice field visit and Carachipampa Volcano lagoon

After breakfast we’ll tour through a very unique pumice field. It’s a strange but dazzling landscape carved into the rock that gives birth to its name “pumice”, which was produced from a big volcanic explosion and the escape of gases during the cooling period. This afternoon it’s back to El Peñon, and along the way we’ll visit a young volcano, Carachi Pampa, which is an intense black colour produced by basalt spilling. In its base, there’s a lagoon where you may find pink flamingos.

Day Twelve: El Peñon to Cafayate

After breakfast we depart from El Peñón through the puna in Catamarca, where we will have an incredible view of the dunes. Descending in altitude, we will begin to enter the Calchaqui Valley. About the Region

Salta is in northern Argentina and situated 3,780 ft above sea level at the foothills of the Andes, which are the longest continental mountain range in the world. The weather in Salta is always warm and dry, with annual averages of less than 30 inches of rainfall. Nicknamed Salta la Linda (“Salta the beautiful”), it has become a major tourist destination due to its old, colonial architecture, tourism friendliness, excellent weather and natural scenery of the valleys westward. Attractions in the city proper include the 18th century Cabildo, the neo-classical style Cathedral, and the 9 de julio central square along with San Bernardo hill and its surroundings. The city’s museums exhibit a wide range of artifacts and artwork from the native civilizations that flourished in the area (Salta is located in the southernmost region of what was the Inca empire, belonging to the Collasuyu, one of the four areas of the empire until the Spanish conquest), as well as from the 16th century Spanish conquest and the colonial and post-colonial periods. Salta used to be the starting point of the “Train to the Clouds” and is on the route to red-soiled Cafayate, as well as to other nearby tourist destinations.

Cafayate sits approximately 5,500 feet above sea level in Argentina’s Calchaquí Valley. A quaint colonial town, anchored on a central public square, it was founded in the mid-19th century as a mission. For more than a century now, it’s beckoned winemakers to one of the highest grape-growing regions in the world, with certain areas topping out at around 10,200 feet. It’s this proximity to the sun, wind, and other natural elements that produces richer flavors and deeper colors in the grapes cultivated here, including cabernet sauvignon, tannat, bonarda, syrah, and some chardonnay. Today’s vineyards predominantly grow hearty, robust, and fruit-forward malbec, as well as torrontés, which produces fragrant, elegant white wines with lovely, crisp fruit. The history-rich town is the perfect base for tasting, while shoppers will appreciate the artisanal finds while browsing the stalls of local crafts, jewelry, and art at Mercado Artesanal on the main square.

  • Transfer from the airport to your hotel – Day at leisure

Upon arrival, we’ll pick you up from the airport and drive you to the city where you will have the rest of the day to enjoy at your own pace.

Buenos Aires is a marvelous, furious, cosmopolitan city, full of colors and different kinds of architecture. Capital of Argentina and described as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires proudly embraces this title, as well as showing off its very own culture.

Argentines are usually eager to host visitors: if you walk the streets with a map, someone will surely stop and ask if you need directions. That’s our spirit! So, for this first day, feel free to wander the cobblestone streets lined with outdoor cafes, enjoy the mouth-watering aroma of prized Argentine beef sizzling on an open parrilla (barbecue), and browse the local antique and artisan markets that offer a wide variety of bargain shopping.

Say Hueque Tips

  • Our recommendations for your first day in Buenos Aires

To travel deeper and have a firm grip on the Argentine spirit, find the perfect leather jacket or handbag -Buenos Aires is home to some excellent local designers- and explore the colorful Palermo Soho neighborhoods or just have some medialunas or another delicious pastry as you marvel around Palermo’s amazing street art.

City Tour and Tango Show  - Buenos Aires

buenos-aires-tango-1

  • Half-day city tour through Buenos Aires

In the morning we will pick you up from your hotel to enjoy our 5-hour Buenos Aires city tour—you will be swept away by the highlights of our beloved Buenos Aires! Over the course of a half-day, you will have the chance to visit the historical and political center of the city; Plaza de Mayo, and the Pink House (the presidential house).

Next, we’ll move on to San Telmo, with its cobblestone streets and the oldest residential neighborhood, and then to La Boca where Buenos Aires turns colorful and tango is ever-present. Come walk Caminito Street and dance with the locals. The next stop is the chic and aristocratic Recoleta, where the big palaces remind us why Buenos Aires is called the “Paris of the South”.

  • Dinner and Tango Show

In the evening we’ll pick you up from your hotel to take you to a mystical place where you’ll discover one of our most ancient traditions. Tango is more than our national dance… tango is our immigrant origins, the talent of our local artists, the sensuality of Argentine women, and our way of dealing with a broken heart; dancing our way through tragic, and yet eternal, love stories.

Tonight you will enjoy a 3-hour professional display of tango and music with a group of local artists onstage immersed in an elegant and alluring place. The manners, ambiance, clothes, and dance steps that tango lovers used to practice 100 years ago will come to life again and you will travel back in time for a night.

This spectacular tango show in Buenos Aires will be accompanied by delicious Argentine and international cuisine. Dinner is all-inclusive, beverages included so you can lose yourself in the ethereal taste of Malbec wine. At the end of the evening, around midnight, you will be driven back to your hotel, fully in love with the bohemian spirit of our incredible city.

  • What you need to know about tango culture in Buenos Aires

Tango is, all in all, a cultural experience that’s deeply rooted in Argentine hearts. Where do regular people go to dance tango? There are an immense number of dance halls or milongas in Buenos Aires. Some of our favorites are La Viruta -beginner-friendly- and Salon Canning -with more advanced clientele- in the Palermo neighborhood. Tango has evolved a big deal in the past years, and now there are also LGBT milongas that encourage a most inclusive practice.

Located at the shore of Lago Argentino (the southernmost, largest Patagonian lake) it’s also home to the Spegazzini glacier, which forms the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the Upsala Glacier, named Glaciar del Gigante (Giant’s glacier) It’s the biggest glacier that sits at the mouth of Lake Argentino.

But there is much more to see in El Calafate than glaciers. Make the most of your free day and discover other secret gems of the region.

Enjoy Your Cruise in the Beagle Channel   - Ushuaia

ushuaia-beagle-channel (2)

  • Tour Ushuaia’s famous islands in the Beagle Channel

In 1833 Charles Darwin sailed the Beagle Channel and found something great. Today it’s your turn: become another explorer of this channel, primitively named Onashaga Channel since the Onas were its first discoverers.

Make your way to the tourist pier (located downtown) to embark on a 4-hour Beagle Channel navigation in a fully equipped boat with a capacity for up to 26 people. With Argentina on your left and Chile on your right, you’ll sail this natural border until you reach the iconic Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, which is still in operation.

On the way, enjoy uplifting panoramic views of Ushuaia Bay, crowned by the Martial Glacier’s diverse marine wildlife, such as cormorants (flying birds, closely related to penguins) and fur seals. Hop off on Bridges Island to explore its vegetation, and visit the archeological remains of the Yamanas (the native inhabitants) accompanied by a specialized bilingual guide.

During the trip, enjoy bottomless hot cocoa and cookies, or try the maté (loose herbal tea), which is every Argentinian’s favorite drink. Once we get back to the port, you can make your way back to your hotel or stop in a local cafe or brewery to enjoy an amber craft beer paired with a traditional Patagonian appetizer.

  • Have you ever walked amongst penguins?

If not, Ushuaia is your chance to fulfill that bucket-list dream… You can switch out the Beagle Channel Navigation to take the Magellanic Penguin Rookery Tour on Martillo Island (available from October to April at an additional cost) or add one day to your Ushuaia itinerary so that you can do both. On Martillo Island, you will also see a very rare type of penguin that is typically only found in Antarctica: the yellow-crested penguin.

Continue to Northern Argentina - Salta

salta-north-of-argentina

  • Transfer from your hotel to Ushuaia airport

Continue your travel itinerary to Northern Argentina . At the appropriate time, we’ll pick you up and drive you to the airport.

  • Transfer from Salta airport to your hotel in Salta

Upon arrival, we’ll meet at the airport and we’ll drive you to your hotel. Take the rest of the afternoon to explore the city. Bear in mind that this is a stress-free hub: la siesta (mid-day nap) is kind of a religious ritual for locals, which means that between 1 pm and 5 pm, shops are usually closed.

Salta is the selected jumping-off point for travelers seeking to explore the North of Argentina. From here, you can visit the most outstanding natural wonders of the area: the Humahuaca Gorge, and the Seven Colors Hill located in Jujuy, a bordering province that is also famous worldwide.

What to do on your first day touring Salta?

Salta has it all: the geographical diversity (red, green, and brown-tinted mountains) and the vast history—it is in these time-honored lands that men fought for the freedom of Argentina. Make the most of your time in the city and:

  • Admire the colonial architecture, the lively cafés in the main plaza (great people-watching spot), and try the traditional “tamales”.
  • Visit the vibrant and authentic peñas, which are places where locals grab a table to watch their favorite folkloric singers, and after a glass of wine (or two) everyone joins in for dancing. “¿Bailamos?” (Shall we dance?): It’s all you need to say to start the party!

Visit the Salt Flats and Purmamarca - Salta & Jujuy

north-of-argentina-salt-flats

  • Full-day Safari to the Clouds and Great Salt Flats – Night in Jujuy

Today you’ll travel to the clouds—no exaggeration! We’ll pick you up at your hotel to start a two-day trip to Purmamarca and the Great Salt Flats, a white solid ocean, 13000 feet above sea level!

In this 10-hour trip, we’ll travel along the same route as the famous Train to the Clouds, zigzagging on lonely roads between the blue sky and the high desert plains. On our way, we will visit historic ruins and small scattered villages.

Our first destination is the small town of Campo Quijano, best known as the Gateway to the Puna. Later, we will visit the impressive Quebrada del Toro, a natural wonder where human-sized cacti stand in a backdrop of eroded peaks that emerge from the golden sand like giant fingers. Here we’ll stop for a refreshing coffee break.

We’ll keep on traveling to Santa Rosa de Tastil, a pre-Incan city of the XIII century, and right after, to San Antonio de los Cobres, the HQ of the Pachamama (Mother Earth) Celebration. The “salty” cherry on top will be the surreal landscape of the Great Salt Flats. The natural light and reflections provide perfect opportunities for endless photo fun. Test your creativity! And be careful of where you put your feet: there are artificial water pools in the area.

At the end of your adventure in the Great Salt Flats we’ll take you to your hotel in Purmamarca, located at the base of Jujuy’s famed Seven Color Hill.

  • What to bring to this tour and what to do in Purmamarca

For this 2-day trip we recommend that you leave your luggage in your hotel in Salta, and just take a day pack on the excursion. For your free evening in Purmamarca, we recommend that you take a walk around the main plaza and visit the ancient Santa Rosa de Lima Church

Visit Picturesque Humahuaca - Jujuy

Salta & Jujuy - Exploring Purmamarca

  • Full-day visit to Humahuaca Gorge – Night in Salta

We’ll pick you up from your hotel early in the morning and take you on a 12-hour adventure to the Humahuaca Gorge, declared a UNESCO Heritage Site. Humahuaca Gorge is home to a bunch of natural amazing monuments like the Seven Color Hill, the Pucará de Tilcara (a ramshackle yet well-restored native fortress), the Paleta del Pintor (Painter Palette) at Maimará village, an impressive multi-colored mountain range.

You’ll see some peculiar paintings of the colonial period (called Pinturas Cuzqueñas) at the little Uquía Church, and finally, pass by the famous Tropic of Capricorn milestone to reach the picturesque Humahuaca.

Wander among their traditional houses and streets, and get a feel for the old-world languor that still survives in this setting. At the end of the day, we’ll drive you back to your hotel in Salta La Linda (the beautiful) that Argentines nicknamed the city.

Salta & Jujuy - Exploring Purmamarca

Calchaquí Valley 2-Day Tour - Cafayate, Salta

salta-cafayate-quebrada-de-las-conchas-lanscape

  • 2-day trip through the Calchaquí Valleys

We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Salta and leave behind the Lerma Valley to visit Laures and Escoipe, the first two gorges of this 12-hour excursion. The landscapes will still remain green, but colors will definitely begin to change when we approach the Cuesta del Obispo, the windiest and most spectacular road in this area. We’ll climb up to 11,000 feet high—get prepared to see the world from above!

This is the connective road to get to the high valleys, where the Calchaqui Valley wine region sits. We’ll see enormous cacti while passing through Los Cardones National Park on our way to Cachi, a famous village where Spanish and native traditions combine to form the most beautiful architecture.

In the afternoon, continue with your exploration of the valleys and reach the towns of Molinos and Angastaco, just before visiting Las Flechas Gorge, a special rocky formation that creates a labyrinth of sharp, high peaks. After going down its mysterious passages, we’ll get to Cafayate where we’ll spend the night.

Cafayate is one of the most popular destinations of the Calchaqui Valley wine region. Cafayate wine is renowned in Argentina, especially because of the star product of the region: the Torrontes wine.

  • Visit wineries in Cafayate

Enjoy the end of the day in this picturesque town while sipping on a drink at sunset in the main square, or maybe a Malbec ice cream from a traditional gelato shop. Since there are many surrounding wineries, we thought that a visit to one or two of them could be interesting for you… so we’ve already scheduled it! According to weather and timetables, you will be able to partake in this memorable tour either on your arrival day or the day after.

salta-wine-tour

  • Calchaquí Valley Excursion – Night in Salta

On the second day of this Calchaqui Valley adventure, you’ll leave Cafayate and be directly immersed into the forbidding universe of Las Conchas Gorge, where erosion has carved mysterious red shapes into the rocks. Get prepared to visit this Natural Reserve for about 5 hours, and enjoy the views of its colorful hills while you go down its red-tinted promontories and discover the most prominent rocky highlights: the Frog, the Obelisk, and the Castles.

The highlight of the day will be the Amphitheater and the famous Devil’s Throat. The amphitheater is a natural semicircular formation (65 feet high) and is home to intimate concerts performed by local artists. Get inside and check out the amazing acoustics by singing your favorite tune! Nearby, the Devil’s Throat awaits at the end of Las Conchas Gorge. Going down this particular rocky formation, you’ll feel as though you’re right in the belly of a giant!

At the end of the day, we’ll take you back to Salta. Enjoy the evening by eating an empanada salteña, a special variation of this classic Argentine dish.

Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

the service on the cruise was exceptional. The crew’s knowledge and passion for the region were evident in their informative lectures and their willingness to share their expertise. They ensured our safety while also going above and beyond to make our journey comfortable and memorable.

This cruise to Antarctica was an incredible expedition. Adventure, natural beauty, and wildlife encounters were the main stars. Luckily we enjoyed a smooth sail through the Drake Passage, so we could admire the astounding wildlife, and the outstanding service made this journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all expectations. If you seek an adventure that stirs the soul and leaves an indelible mark, an Antarctic cruise is an absolute must.

The opportunity to step foot on the untouched Antarctica was a privilege. The glaciers, the icy terrain, and the absolute stillness were both humbling and invigorating. Exploring via zodiac boats allowed us to get up close to the landscape and wildlife, providing an intimate experience of this raw, unspoiled wilderness. Thanks to every member of the crew that made this adventure an unforgettable experience!

I specially want to thank Antonella and Lucia for their hard work and dedication towards our very successful holiday. Your dedication and eye to detail was very much appreciated.

Celia our guide for our two days at Iguazu falls was exceptional.

We will definitely recommend Sayhueque to our friends back in Australia.

We enjoyed our trip very much

Sayhueque did an amazing job from start to finish.

You guys helped me provide my husband with a truly unforgettable experience for his 50th birthday, and I can’t say thank you enough.

The trip was really great, everything went smoothly and I had a great time! The organisation was great and I have nothing to really complain about.

I would rate this trip 9.5/10 and definitely recommend it to others if they wanted to go to Patagonia. The activities that you chose were very good and the organisation was great. Also because of the 24/7 emergency contact that responded very quickly. Felipe, our travel advisor was great help!

Thanks for everything

What to pack for Argentina

People packing for a tour

Formal wear

Although there is no written dress code, you may want to dress up for a tango show or a night at the Teatro Colón, one of the world’s best opera houses.

Wind and waterproof coat

Patagonia is famed for its chilly climate and strong winds, so you’ll need to pack a sturdy coat, scarf, hat and gloves to stay warm.

Versatile shoes

Argentina has a myriad of terrains and you’ll need shoes that can take you dancing across a tango hall, and hiking through rugged mountain trails.

Adaptor plug

In Argentina, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and I. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

The sun is extremely strong in Argentina, and you’ll need sunglasses (and sunscreen) to protect yourself, even in winter when the gleaming snow can be blinding.

Overall a pretty great experience. There are some long excursions (Torres del Paine) and the weather can be, obviously, unpredictable. But the agency is responsive and friendly. Treasures of Patagonia Tour

Treasures of Patagonia

First part of the tour: Los Glacieres Hotel in El Calafate and tour of Perito Moreno Glacier. First of all, the tour guide and bus driver for SayHueque (Sebastien & Daniela) were great. We were picked up as scheduled, the drive was good and safe and Daniela spoke perfect English and gave us detailed information throughout the day. Highly recommend this tour group. The hotel was OK, room mostly clean and comfortable (one of the rooms had a stained bedspread). Breakfast was on the simple side compared to other hotels. Box lunch also very simple. Loved the tour of the Perito Morino Glacier. 2nd part, tour to El Chalten. Did not enjoy the tour company as much. They were nice enough but didn't pick us up in a timely manner. The guide was nice but spoke mostly Spanish on the tour. My husband and I were the only two English people and he barely gave us 5 minutes of instructions. We were supposed to stop at the Park Office for information but they never did stop. The hotel, Pudo Lodge was nice and comfortable. Wifi only available in lobby and still not very good. The box lunch was fabulous. Staff were friendly and helpful. Note that the brochure you have us has some errors in it. We expected a box lunch in El Chalten and had an embarrassing discussion with the hotel about this. It turns out that part of your brochure talks about Torres del Pain and not El Chalten, thus the confusion. I cannot attach the copy of the brochure here but can send it to you if you provide an email address. Overall we were very satisfied with the services of Tourradar and SayHueque. Thank you

The hotels and tours booked through this company were perfect for us - the rooms, location and support. Our trip to Argentina was unforgettable - all in a very good way. Thank you.

Our trip to Patagonia is something that I will never forget. I was willing to travel to Patagonia a long time ago and everything went as it was planned. Hotel Las Dunas and Hotel Chalten Suites were very nice hotels to stay and a special note to Pablo, the guide who joined us at El Chalten during the treks to Laguna de los tres and Torre Mount. We will definetely come back to Patagonia soon.

We loved to explore the northwest of Argentina - its beautiful! We had some misunderstandings with the local tour operator which gave us different pick up times twice, but besides it was a really nice tour. We People has the best customer service - thanks to Eve! The chosen hotels were great located and had a pretty good breakfast. The guides we had were so much fun on tour and we had plenty of photostops.

Mountain Escape – Patagonia: El Chalten – 5 Days Tour

Mountain Escape – Patagonia: El Chalten – 5 Days

The guide and porter, Pedro and Miguel, were fantastic. Pedro is very knowledgeable about the route, the terrain, what conditions are safe and the best techniques to mitigate for icy, snowy terrains etc. He also knew everything about the areas history, culture, traditions, wildlife etc. He was very patient and also kept up the motivation on what is a very demanding route. Miguel was our porter. He is a stoic quiet man but funny, and friendly. Miguel has some fantastic stories too. He is a trained mountain rescuer so I felt very safe with him accompanying us on some of the more challenging passes. The route itself was difficult and risky in places, but enjoyable. It is not for the faint hearted but the risk was rewarded with amazing views. Recommendations for the tour opporator would be to send the itinerary in English and perhaps a packing list.

5 of the best road trips in Argentina

Shafik Meghji

Mendoza, Argentina - February 13, 2013: Vehicles driving through the road and the view of the landscape near Mendoza, Argentina.

Soak up the incredible landscapes of Argentina on one of these epic road trips © Holger Mette / Getty Images

With its vast open spaces, dramatic and diverse scenery and endless highways,  Argentina is an ideal place for a road trip.

Hiring a car allows you to escape the crowds, explore at your own pace and visit remote areas that would otherwise be out of reach. Although Argentina’s main highways are generally paved, you can expect gravel and potholes on many minor roads, particularly in the south, though this just adds to the adventure. Roads off the beaten track are best tackled in spring or summer, avoiding the bitter cold and snows of the South American winter.

For Argentina's most rugged routes, you'll need a 4WD, but there are also plenty of laid-back day trips on sealed roads visiting historic sites, vineyards and viewpoints in some of the most scenic parts of the country.

Whether you’re looking for legendary routes such as the Pan-American Highway or little-known back roads through the wilds, Argentina has you covered. Here are five of our favorite road trips.

Best route for epic adventure Cabo Virgenes–La Quiaca; 5224km (3246 miles); allow 3–5 weeks

Argentina’s answer to Route 66, Ruta 40 is one of the world’s longest roads, stretching almost the entire length of Argentina. Also known as RN40, Ruta Nacional Cuarenta or simply La Cuarenta (“The Forty”), this epic highway starts in the far south in Cabo Virgenes, a windswept settlement on the Strait of Magellan, and finishes in the extreme northwest in the town of La Quiaca, which sits at a breathless 3442m (11,293ft) above sea level on the Bolivian border.

Between these two outposts, the highway traces the Andes, passing through 11 Argentinian provinces and scores of stunning landscapes, from vast canyons and rugged mountain passes to temperate rainforests and lush valleys cloaked in vineyards.

The quietest, and perhaps most atmospheric, section of the road runs from El Calafate , a touristy hub for outdoor activities on the edge of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares , to the city of Bariloche in the Argentinian Lake District . For most of this leg of the journey, you'll largely have the road to yourself, with snowy Andean peaks to the west and the seemingly endless Patagonian steppe to the east.

Planning tip:  The route is best attempted by experienced motorists in the spring or summer. Ruta 40 is now mostly paved, but it's useful to have a 4WD, particularly if you plan to explore some of the gravel roads (known locally as ripio ) that branch off into remote areas of Patagonia.

2. The Pan-American Highway

Best long-distance road trip Mendoza–Ushuaia; 3300km (2051 miles); allow 2–4 weeks

A network of interconnected routes snaking right down through the Americas from northern Alaska to Tierra del Fuego , the 3000km (19,000-mile) Pan-American Highway is, quite simply, the world’s most epic road trip. But there's no need to follow the entire route – the southernmost section in Argentina is a highly memorable drive that takes in many of the country’s highlights.

The route starts in Mendoza province , the heart of the country’s famed wine industry, before heading east to the bright lights of the capital, Buenos Aires . Beyond the sprawling suburbs, the highway continues south, skirting the fertile grasslands of the Pampas , tracing the Atlantic coast, and then arrowing through sparsely populated Patagonia .

When you reach the far south, cut into Chile and take a ferry across the Strait of Magellan (this short hop is one of just two stretches of the Pan-American Highway that cannot be driven, alongside the Darién Gap dividing Panama from Colombia ). It’s then a relatively short drive to the city of Ushuaia , where ubiquitous signs let you know you’ve reached "El Fin del Mundo" (The End of the World).

Planning tip:  Although the Argentinian section of the Pan-American Highway can be driven year-round, the bitterly cold, snowy and windy winters in southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego mean a summer or spring journey is the best bet. It’s also important to make sure your car rental agreement and insurance allow you to cross into Chile (you may have to pay an extra fee for this).

A dusty car sits on an unpaved highway surrounded by the red sands of a desert landscape

3. Cuesta del Obispo route

Best for mountain views Salta–Cachi; 160km (99 miles); allow 1–2 days

This drive from the charming city of Salta to the tranquil town of Cachi showcases the dramatic mountain landscapes of Argentina’s northwest. Heading southwest from Salta along RP33 – a largely paved provincial road – the route travels through the sunny Calchaquí Valley region, which is carpeted with high-altitude vineyards and dotted with clusters of attractive adobe houses.

The journey then continues over a precipitous mountain pass known as the Cuesta del Obispo (“Bishop’s Slope”), which features a dizzying series of switchback turns, before dropping into Parque Nacional Los Cardones , named for the tall cacti that stud this arid area.

Planning tip:  Check the weather forecast before setting out along the Cuesta del Obispo route, as heavy rain can make it impassable. Although you can head back to Salta the same day, it’s well worth spending the night in beautiful Cachi, which is encircled by snowy peaks and set within striking distance of several wineries. Take time to relax and enjoy a few glasses of the region’s signature torrontés – an aromatic, peach-fragranced white wine – while soaking up the views.

A city lit up at night with car headlights making the roads glow

4. Camino de la Historia

Best historic drive Córdoba–Cerro Colorado; 170km (106 miles); allow 2–3 days

Often overlooked by travelers, Córdoba province provides some fascinating insights into the history of the indigenous peoples who originally inhabited this area, as well as the Spanish colonists who came later. Start in the city of Córdoba , founded in 1573 and known for its rich cultural scene.

The first section of the RN9 highway has been dubbed the Camino de la Historia ("Historical Route”), and it follows the colonial-era Camino Real del Perú (“Royal Road of Peru”), which once ran from Lima to Buenos Aires via the legendary silver mines of Potosí in present-day Bolivia .

On the way, you'll pass the evocative estancias (ranches) of Jesús María and Santa Catalina , which were built by Jesuit missionaries, who had a devastating impact on the area's indigenous inhabitants in the 17th and 18th centuries. Centered on striking whitewashed churches, the estancias – listed as Unesco World Heritage sites – offer museums and guided tours that lead visitors through this complicated period in Argentinian history.

At the end of the Camino de la Historia, you'll reach a collection of caves and mountain slopes covered with beautiful petroglyphs near the pretty village of Cerro Colorado. Created up to 1000 years ago, these ancient artworks depict humans and animals, scenes from everyday life, and abstract shapes and figures, providing a snapshot of a lost world.

People looking over the lakes of Nahuel Huapi National Park

5. Ruta de los Siete Lagos

Best scenic drive San Martín de los Andes–Villa La Angostura; 110km (68 miles); allow 1–2 days

Gorgeous landscapes reminiscent of the Alps, numerous options for side trips, plenty of places to grab a bite to eat or stay the night – with perks like this, a leisurely drive along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos (“Seven Lakes Route”) is hard to beat.

Connecting the tourist hubs of San Martín de los Andes and Villa La Angostura, the drive follows Ruta 40 through two national parks – Lanín and Nahuel Huapi – taking in a particularly picturesque swathe of the Argentinian Lake District.

As you’d expect given the name, the highlights of the route are the seven eponymous lagos , which are lined with beaches, surrounded by dense forests and watched over by snowy mountains and volcanoes. All have crystal-clear waters that are ideal for swimming, kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding, though it may be hard to tear yourself away from the sublime views.

Planning tip: Snow can block off parts of the road in winter, so the Ruta de los Siete Lagos is best driven in the spring, summer or early fall.

COSA VEDERE A SALTA

Piazza 9 de Julio: la piazza principale della città, in cui troviamo alcuni degli edifici più importanti come la “Cattedrale di Salta” , dal tipico colorito rosa, il “Cabildo” , ossia il Museo Historico del Norte, oltre che al “Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montagna”;

Chiesa e Convento di San Francesco: caratteristica chiesa dal colorito rosso e panna, a pochi passi da Piazza 9 de Julio;

COSA VEDERE A CACHI

COSA VEDERE A CAFAYATE

  • la Garganta del Diablo , un’ enorme caverna racchiusa tra due pareti rocciose;
  • l’Anfiteatro , una cavità semicircolare scavata nella roccia;
  • il Mirador Tres Cruces , un bellissimo punto panoramico raggiungibile con una breve camminata da cui si ha una fantastica vista sulla valle in basso;
  • El Sapo , una roccia a forma di rospo;
  • Sendero Los Estratos, un breve trekking davvero meraviglioso, all’interno di un paesaggio che trasuda antichità, chiamato Yesara , circondati da montagne multicolore e da pareti rocciose di milioni di anni, composte da “anelli” di varia tonalità, ad indicare la successione delle varie ere geologiche trascorse in questo pianeta, di cui esse sono mute testimoni. La camminata si conclude in cima ad un promontorio, dal cui mirador si gode di una vista fantastica sul paesaggio circostante;

COSA VEDERE A TILCARA

COSA VEDERE A HUMAHUACA

L’area è protetta come “Monumento naturale”.

Your North West Argentina tour begins as we depart from your hotel and travel out of the city of Salta to the west and the town known as the door to the Andes “Campo Quijano”. From this point onwards we follow the tracks of the train to the clouds up the Quebrada Del Toro which translates to “the Bull Ravine” named after the river that runs through it.

The road up the ravine is a spectacular one boasting many colorful views and some breathtaking scenery. The tracks of the train to the clouds have a few interesting features to it that we will look at on the way as well as many bridges that (used to) enable the train to make this taxing journey up into the longest mountain range in the world.

We continue up the road passing little villages and communities on the way until we reach the pre-Colombian site of Santa Rosa de Tastil where we will explore this mysterious and long-abandoned village. After climbing to one of the highest points of the journey at the dizzying height of 4100 meters above sea level we continue on to the mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres. From the town, we venture further into the mountain range to visit the Viaducto de polvorilla, the famous curved bridge that is one of the typical photos used to promote the famous train journey.

After having lunch in the town of San Antonio we travel on to the amazing Salta flats of Salinas Grandes. After exploring this otherworldly expanse we will continue on to the highest point of the trip at 4180 meters and then drop down the famous Questa Del Lipan to the quaint village of Purmamarca where we will spend the night at the foot of the hill of Seven colors.

After a traditional breakfast, we will leave Purmamarca and enter into the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The Humahuaca Ravine is a UNESCO world heritage site due to its Indian roots and cultural wealth. This is a great place to get a feel for the Andean culture that is still alive and well.

Once we arrive in the historical town of Humahuaca you will have the chance to walk through its cobbled streets and explore its small plaza and many stalls. An impressive monument to the Independence of Argentina is situated here due to the last battles that were fought during the struggle against the royalists. Once you have finished exploring we will slowly make our way back down the ravine to Tilcara stopping at different points of interest along the way.

After a good night’s sleep in the Village of Tilcara we will have the opportunity to visit the old Inca fortress or “Pucara” where we will observe the way that the local Indians lived throughout the occupation of the Inca up until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. There is also an interesting museum to wander around before lunch. After lunch, we will make our way down, out of the ravine past the city of San Salvador de Jujuy and onto the cloud forest road where we will observe the beautiful dense foliage of this spectacular ecosystem.

We will drop you back at your hotel in Salta in the evening with lots of time to enjoy a night out on the town.

A well-deserved day of rest where you will be able to wander through the city of Salta and explore the various museums and points of interest at your leisure. If you would prefer we could arrange a day of horse riding or one of our culinary experiences. Please ask for more details.

After picking you up from your hotel we slowly make our way south through the traditional country villages and the sweet-smelling tobacco fields stopping at points of interest along the way. After stopping for a coffee break in the small town of El Carril we verge off through a small band of the cloud forest to the “Quebrada del escoipe” a ravine named after one of the villages that is nestled within it. We wind our way through the ravine observing the many colorful and cacti-covered hills before starting our climb up the famous Cuesta de Obispo or “the Bishops slope” a gravel road that climbs up to over 3000 meters above sea level.

Having made the journey up to the top of the Cuesta we carry on to the National park of “Los Cardones” along one of the many Inca roads in the area. Once we have passed through the park we will take a moment to appreciate the splendor of the” Nevado de Cachi” the snow-capped peak under which the small town of Cachi is situated.

Once in the town, you will have the chance to explore around the old cobbled streets and the local church and museums and have lunch in one of the many little restaurants or cafes the town has to offer.

From Cachi we make our way down the famous route 40 (the longest road in Argentina at 5194 km long) past the beautiful little settlements of the valley Calchaqui stopping at one of the highest vineyards in the world for a tantalizing wine tasting before carrying on to the small town of Molinos where you will stay in the Hacienda de Molinos a colonial hotel formerly the home of the last governor of Salta to be appointed by the king of Spain.

After a good breakfast, you will have the opportunity to go for a trek in the surrounding hills after which we will make our way south through the spectacular Quebrada de las fletchas and soak up the amazing ridges and rock formations. Once we have explored the Quebrada we will move on through the small village of San Carlos onto the beautiful town of Cafayate.

Once we have you settled in your hotel you will be free to wander around the plaza and explore the local church before enjoying a bottle of one of the excellent local wines with your dinner.

Having had a lie-in we will make our way down to the inspirational Pacha Mama museum and then back to Cafayate after visiting the Quilmes ruins the largest pre-Incan ruins in the area. We will then stop at one of the many beautiful vineyards with a restaurant for you to have a tour of the wine-making process followed by a leisurely lunch appreciating the spectacular view.

We will spend the afternoon making our way through the exceptionally colorful Quebrada de las Conchas stopping at all of the main areas of interest and making the most of the photographic opportunities along the way.

We will finish our tour back at your hotel or we can drop you off at the Airport for you to carry on your trip of a lifetime.

The above Itinerary is based on the 7-day trip which allows for lots of time to explore and a day of rest in Salta to break up the amount of time travelling. If you would like to forego the day of rest we can do the 6 days continually at no additional cost. Activities such as trekking and horse riding are not included in the price of the tour but if you would be interested we would be more than happy to arrange them for you.

This trip may be done in less time but this would signify a longer time in transit and a little less time to explore. The price for the 6/7 day trip starts at US$450 per person (a 4/5 day option is available from US$300 per person) this price does not include food, accommodation or additional activities though we are more than happy to arrange accommodation and any additional activities you would like to do.

Starting price is based on 4 people traveling together in a 4×4 truck. The price of the tour does not change depending on amout of people 6/7 day tour US$1800 / 4/5 day tour US$1200.

How we spend the time.

Gareth picked us up and off we went…up into the mountains: Quebrada de Humahuaca, overnighting in Tilcara. It was great having a personal English speaking guide who ensured we did the sorts of things that interested us. Day 2 the awesomeness continued, visiting Salinas Grandes and Purmamarca …before the drive back to Salta airport in plenty of time for our flight! Thankyou !

We did both of our tours with Gareth, who was a total legend. He really went above and beyond to give us the best trip ever, and we felt we left having gained a friend.

“The pace of the trip was perfect and Gareth was an excellent guide- informative, knowledgeable and friendly. We have some fantastic memories (and photos) of the trip. Thanks again for making our time so memorable”.

“Our guide was Gareth, originally from England, a very special boy for his sympathy connected to a great kindness and attention to the needs of tourists. For us, the main feature was the fact of providing us with important information of the places visited, always willing to accommodate our requests, also leaving space to visit alone. Article 8 of the Waterway Treaty allows countries to charge tolls under certain conditions, Ramírez recalled

Argentina's Milei considers military aid for Ukraine

Milei revealed ongoing discussions between Defense Minister Luis Petri and Ukrainian authorities. “We will do whatever we can to help,” he stated.

President Javier Milei has announced plans to embark on a diplomatic tour across Europe in mid-June, including a potential meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski and discussions regarding military aid to Ukraine.

Scheduled to attend the Group of 7 (G7) meeting in Italy from June 13 to 15, followed by engagements in Spain and Germany, Milei expressed his intention to visit Ukraine during this tour. This announcement comes in response to an invitation extended by Zelenski, who attended Milei's inauguration last December.

Speaking to CNN , Milei outlined his itinerary, stating, “We are designing a trip, and the idea is that we will go through Ukraine. We have to travel to the G7, I am grateful to President [Giorgia] Meloni for inviting me, I also have to go to Madrid to receive the Juan de Mariana award, then to Germany to receive the medal of honor.”

During the trip, Milei intends to hold discussions with German Chancellor Olaff Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, in addition to his proposed meeting with Zelenski.

Regarding military aid to Ukraine, Milei revealed ongoing discussions between Defense Minister Luis Petri and Ukrainian authorities. “The governments are in contact, including the Ministers of Defense, and we will do whatever we can to help,” he stated. Milei also disclosed plans for a defense forum in Argentina at Zelenski's request, indicating his commitment to supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

“I told him yes, we are going to do it,” Milei affirmed, emphasizing his willingness to assist Ukraine as much as possible. The potential for military aid remains under discussion, with Milei acknowledging, “It is something that our Minister of Defense is talking about to see how we can collaborate.”

After receiving recognition as the “International Ambassador of Light” from the Jewish community in Miami, Milei's visit to Ukraine would mark another significant step in his diplomatic engagements, underscoring Argentina's commitment to international cooperation and support for countries facing external threats.

Below are some highlights.

Women Open the Show

In a first for Argentina , an artist partnered with a platform to select all-female opening acts. In this case Emilia worked with Spotify EQUAL to choose five artists to open her concerts, strengthening her commitment to developing acts. Connie Isla was picked for the first two dates, and she will be followed by Yami Safdie, Clara Cava, Mora Navarro and Malena Villa.

One of 10 Sold-Out Dates

The concert was produced and promoted by Fenix Entertainment, and it is worth recalling that when tickets went on sale in December 2023, 10 dates sold out for the same venue, Buenos Aires’ Movistar Arena, in just 10 hours. Given the on-sale success, two more dates were added at the Vélez Sarsfield Stadium for Oct. 12 and 13. In Argentina, the tour will also go to different provinces, including Córdoba, Mendoza and Salta.

Getting Intimate With Fans

Duki and Other Guests

While Emilia performed at boyfriend Duki’s concert last year, this time he came to Emilia’s stage to perform “Como Si No Importara” together. It was an intimate moment in which she gave him a kiss and thanked him for “a healthy love.” Also present later were Tiago PZK and Nicki Nicole for “Una Foto” and Callejero Fino for “En La Intimidad.” Emilia also performed “Rápido Lento” with Tiago PZK, and ensemble track “Los Del Espacio” with FMK, Duki and Tiago PZK.

Emilia’s Parents Were in Attendance

Emotions ran high late in the show when Emilia could not hold back tears while performing “Guerrero.mp3,” a song dedicated to her father while he was sick. Fans in the crowd could see her father, visibly excited, sitting in the front row next to her mother. “I want to thank my dad for being my greatest inspiration and for being my example of courage. I love you,” the singer said.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse you can see across the U.S. today

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 8:52 PM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crosses North America today, with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans can see the big event  as skies darken in the middle of the day on Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse will first appear along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then travel across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon will fully block out the sun , according to NASA. The path will range between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse will start over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT on April 8, according to NASA. From there, the path will continue into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse will exit continental North America around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality includes portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. are included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others will see a partial eclipse. Here are some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — if the weather cooperates :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse will reach totality across the path

The eclipse will begin in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the next few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. You can also  check your ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse will reach you if you're on, or near, the path of totality — or if you'll see a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse will you see if you live outside of the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse will cover a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may spot a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer you are to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that will be hidden.

NASA allows viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun will be covered in their location.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality have a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You can check the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where will the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, will get to experience totality for the longest. Totality there will last 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes long, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. come close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, will have a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

After the April 8 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse than the upcoming one on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse, but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
