Arosa Mia Wiki

ARosa Mia cruises on Danube river. The vessel is in the same class with the A-Rosa cruise ships Bella , Donna , and Riva . Each of these ships is equipped each with two MTU / Maybach marine diesel engines (model "16V 2000 M60") with total power output 1600 kW / 2170 HP. The ship's electrical system consists of three MAN diesel generators (model D2842, output 380 kW each) and 1 emergency diesel generator (Deutz, power 37 kW). The ship's propulsion ("Schottel") includes 2 twin propellers (type "STP 550") and one Schottel Pump Jet (azimuth bow thruster, model "SPJ 57"). The wheelhouse/bridge and awnings can be lowered when passing under low bridges.

Because of size restrictions concerning the Main-Danube Canal (max vessel width is 11, 4 m), Arosa Mia was delivered not via the traditional route “North Sea-Baltic Canal-Wadden Sea-Rhine”, but via the Black Sea. The river ship was loaded on pontoons and towed to Constanta, Romania. In August 2014, A-Rosa Mia hit a bridge while she was passing through Jochenstein Locks along the Danube (Passau district, Germany). Her wheelhouse was sheared off and Mia became inoperable. The 192 passengers on board were required to disembark and some were transported to Passau, while others were transferred to A-Rosa Bella. The boat resumed sailings on August 25 after dock repairs in Linz, Austria. The Mia ship offers complimentary bicycles on land tours and excursions in each of the visited ports.

A-Rosa Mia was launched in 2003 on April 17. Due to its width of 14,4 m, the ship was not delivered via the usual route (North Sea-Baltic Canal-Wadden Sea-Rhine river). Because of the Main-Danube Canal's width restriction of 11, 4 m, the ship was loaded and transported on pontoons (towed via the Black Sea) to Danube Delta ( Constanta, Romania ). Then the riverboat was unloaded and moved under her own power to Oltenita, Romania . The boat's transfer took a total of 22 days.

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises hub. All companies and their fleets are listed there.

Set sail from the charming Austrian market town of Engelhartszell, arriving in elegant Vienna the next day. You’ll sail overnight to Budapest for a wonderful afternoon of exploring. The next day you’ll have the chance to visit Meditteranean-like Pécs, before continuing to Belgrade, beneath the imposing Kalemegdan Fortress.

Continue your journey into the Danube Delta, stopping at Bulgarian Rousse and Romanian Tulcea, gateway to the Delta, where you can choose between several exciting optional excursions.

Head back up the Danube, where you’ll have the chance to visit the fascinating Romanian capital Bucharest and a unique archaeological site near the Serbian city of Donji Milanovac, near the stunning Iron Gates. Your next port of call is the picturesque Serbian city of Novi Sad, dominated by the looming Petrovaradin Fortress, before you continue to Croatian Vukovar, and then, the following day, to Bratislava, where you’ll moor for the afternoon. The next morning is spent cruising through the scenic Wachau Valley, tying up at the picturesque town of Melk in the afternoon for a final call.

If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? Viking Cruises’ fleet has both ocean and river boats

If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

Most ocean-going cruise lines launch one or two ships a year. River cruise ships, however, take to the water much more regularly. Viking River Cruises doesn’t just lay claim to the biggest fleet (80 river cruising ships), but also the Guinness World Record for inaugurating the most new ships in a single day (14, if you were wondering).

Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block

River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.

Keen to sail along Europe’s most famous rivers but not so keen on crowds? Choose a river cruise that goes well beyond the cities on the itinerary, and you’ll be richly rewarded. For example, opt for one of the cruises that travels past Budapest to the Black Sea’s spectacular marshy delta, or along the more remote stretches of Germany’s often-overlooked Main River.

Even the busiest rivers have quiet spots

Unlike on ocean-going cruises, you won’t need binoculars to appreciate the scenery. Sign up for an American river cruise and you can sail through vast bayous, past skyscraper-filled cities and along ocean-wide stretches of the Mississippi during a single sailing, while in Europe, Germany’s UNESCO-listed castles can be easily combined with Prague’s bohemian masterpieces.

The landscape is fabulously diverse

Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

To start with, there are no ocean waves and currents to rock the boat. Additionally, fewer decks means less chance of feeling any movement – you’ll be closer to the hull of the ship (the part which moves least) and river cruising ships’ low-slung design means there’s minimal sway anyway. In summary? You can spend your time planning your excursions and activities rather than poring over ship plans in order to bag a cabin in the most stable spot.

You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

Amazing facts about cruise ships you might not know

River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)

CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

The Nile is 4,132 miles (6,650km) long. To put that into perspective, if you drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End (the entire length of Britain) you’d cover just 840 miles (1,352km). We recommend Viking’s Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise, which starts and finishes in Cairo and takes in Luxor’s Karnak Temple complex, the Necropolis of Thebes and the beautiful Philae temple complex (pictured), which is surrounded by water.

You can cruise the world’s longest river

There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several Uniworld vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here.

One example is Amadeus River Cruises. We’re seeing more river cruise lines offer a complimentary night in a hotel prior to setting sail, along with further opportunities to explore the embarkation and disembarkation destinations. Expect more river cruise companies to offer add-ons such as three-day city packages of Amsterdam (pictured) prior to sailings along the Rhine, or wine-themed mini-breaks prior to Loire sailings.

The added extras are getting better

We’re increasingly keen to avoid crowds, and river cruises have cottoned on to this. They’re going all out to offer cruises year-round – not just during the summer (traditionally the busiest time for river cruises), but in April and May and September and October, when there will be fewer selfie sticks and thinner crowds to contend with. Pictured is Bratislava Castle rising above the Danube River in fall.

It's easier to avoid the crowds

On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) – this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.

Now check out the world's oldest man-made structures still in use today

Danube river cruise ship crashed after it was 'suddenly no longer able to maneuver,' 17 passengers injured

A cruise ship crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria on Friday.

A police statement said the ship "was suddenly no longer able to maneuver."

Eleven people were treated at the hospital and another six suffered less serious injuries.

A Bulgarian cruise ship carrying over 140 passengers crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria.

The incident occurred late on Friday in the northern Austrian town of Aschach an der Donau, local police said Saturday.

Eleven people were injured and taken to hospital as a result of the crash. Six others suffered less serious injuries that did not require hospital treatment.

The ship had set off from Passau, a German city on the Austrian border. A police statement said that as the ship was leaving a lock chamber further down the river, "the ship was suddenly no longer able to maneuver," and its right bow and left aft crashed into the lock walls.

The second-in-command of the ship, who had been at the helm during the crash, "pressed the emergency switch, whereupon the electronics started up again." He was then able to steer the ship out of the lock.

The ship was later docked at the quay wall and emergency services were notified. The ship was able to continue its journey toward Linz, Austria.

Earlier this week, a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, collapsing a section of the 1.6-mile-long structure. The bodies of two construction workers were found after the collision, and four more workers are missing and presumed dead.

Citing the container ship's recovered data recorder, officials said the power went out on the Dali for just one minute and three seconds as it approached the bridge, Sky News reported, but that was enough for the collision to become unavoidable.

In 2019, a cruise boat hit and sank a smaller boat near Budapest, Hungary, killing 25 South Korean tourists and two crew members. The captain was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the accident.

The Danube is the second-largest river in Europe, flowing from the Black Forest in Germany south into the Black Sea near Romania and Ukraine.

Correction: April 1, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated the year of the Danube ship crash in Hungary. It was in 2019, not 2023.

17 reported hurt after river cruise ship hits a concrete passageway on the Danube in Austria

 • Copy Link copied

Seventeen passengers were hurt when a Bulgarian river cruise ship lost steering and hit the sides of a lock on the Danube in Austria, the apa news agency reported Saturday. Eleven of the injured were taken to hospitals.

The ship with 142 passengers aboard, most of them from Germany, temporarily lost power to its electronics system and became unsteerable as it passed through narrow locks at 9:45 p.m. Friday, apa reported.

The ship’s power was restored but not before the bow and stern struck the concrete sides of the lock passage near the town of Aschach, a few miles upriver from Linz.

The ship sustained minor damage and continued to its next port. The cause of the loss of electrical power was under investigation.
