Beach Riot: Subatomic Party Cool – Album Review
Beach Riot’s full debut is a heady mix of cranked up 90’s grunge and alt-rock from a band on the rise.
The album was released earlier this year, but, with the band finally out on the road in support of it, now feels like a good time to check out Beach Riot’s Subatomic Party Cool.
The band first hit our radar in February of 2019 with their self-titled EP , crunching with Mudhoney-level fuzz and QOTSA groove, with an added dose of Britpop in the mix. It was four tracks that showcased what the band were capable of and, on their full debut album, they have continued to build on it. The album kicks off with B.A.D and immediately dives into that Songs For The Deaf density and drive that wraps around your ears. The vocals don’t attack like their peers and influences would but rather meld into a layer of sheen, doubled up to add to the effect even more. It’s the play between singers Rory and Cami that marks them out from other bands of a similar vein, a floating crystalline that adds sheen to their blend of hard rock, harking back to the British alt-rockers around the turn of the millennium like JJ72 and My Vitriol.
When they drop the pounding pulse of the album to being in something a little different, such as on Good To Know (That I’m Still On Your Mind) they show that they really are capable of producing something special. The guitars riffs rise up as the vocals cascade over a sparsity while the rhythm section keeps it tight and moving forwards. It was a highlight on their previous EP and it has served them well to drop it in the album too. Modern Dinosaur, which follows, blends the two ideas together into a schizophrenic riot.
Recent single Wraith doubles down and builds up layers of chaos, the repeating lyrics of the chorus hypnotising before they sign off the first side with Unrequited Love, a song the whispers somewhere around Nirvana’s Marigold. Flip over and side B rockets straight from the traps with Medicine For Success, back firmly once again in Queens’ territory. It’s certainly where the band find their comfort zone and songs like Faze and She’s A Hurricane play out well, the latter no doubt causing body slamming riots in the pits up and down the country right now.
On Subatomic Party Cool, Beach Riot have written an album that shows that they potentially have a bright future ahead of them.
Beach Riot are on tour at the moment. Their remaining dates are: Dec 09 Thu Birmingham, The Rainbow Venues Dec 11 Sat Guildford, The Boileroom Dec 14 Tue Norwich, Voodoo Daddy’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Pizza Joint and Showroom Dec 15 Wed London, The Lexington Dec 16 Thu Brighton, The Prince Albert

BEACH RIOT Reveal New Single ‘Tell Me I’m Wrong’
Brighton fuzz pop band BEACH RIOT are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Tell Me I’m Wrong’ , set for release today on 3rd July 2023 via Alcopop! Records.
The track follows on from previous standalone single ‘Tramlines’, and comes ahead of the band’s appearance on the main stage at 2000 Trees Festival this weekend, with a run of October 2023 EU tour dates alongside German punks Itchy also just announced (see below for listings).
Recorded at Vada Studios and engineered by Pete Hutchins (Royal Blood, Gang Of Youths, Foals), the new single was mastered by Grant Berry at Fader Mastering.
Commenting on the single, the band said: “All we wanna do is take this song onto the stage and be the soundtrack to people’s summer. It’s such a fun, hooky singalong song to play and we can’t wait to join everyone in the sun for this one at Trees.”
2023 singles ‘Tell Me I’m Wrong’ and ‘Tramlines’ are the first new material from the band following the release of their debut album Subatomic Party Cool on Alcopop! Records in 2021. Recorded in 2020 and produced by Ally Jowett at his home studio in Brighton, the resulting collection of fuzz-drenched power pop was showered with praise from Kerrang! Magazine, CLASH, MOJO, The iNewspaper, Louder Than War and LOUDER.
A string of incendiary singles from the record saw the band steadily building momentum throughout the campaign, picking up new radio champions in BBC Radio One’s Jack Saunders and BBC 6music’s Tom Robinson , and crashing onto Spotify UK’s New Music Friday, Noisy, Alternative Noise, The Rock List, All New Rock, Top of The Rock, New Noise, Shockwave, and Fresh Finds Rock playlists to name a few.
The band’s radio support has also been bolstered by a #12 spot on the Amazing Radio Chart , an evening playlist addition from XS Manchester , plus key radio spins from Huw Stephens and Daniel P Carter at BBC Radio One , John Kennedy at Radio X , BBC Scotland’s Vic Galloway , Total Rock , legendary US station KEXP , and BBC introducing .
Having previously played Reading & Leeds Festival, Truck Festival, The Great Escape and more, the band embarked on a run of German tour dates with Berlin power trio PABST last year, and the quartet will be announcing further live dates for 2023 in the very near future.
‘Tell Me I’m Wrong’ is released 3rd July 2023 via Alcopop! Records

New Independent Music & Culture: Doing it for the love since 2003
ALBUM REVIEW: BEACH RIOT – SUB ATOMIC PARTY COOL
Beach Riot’s new album Sub Atomic Party Cool has been three years in the making and I suspect a large percentage of the time was spent trying to find a studio that was reinforced enough to handle the thousand-hurricane ferocity of their sound. Even if you drank a case of Red Bull, got naked, covered yourself in honey, hit a wasps nest with a big stick, ran like the clappers being pursued by an angry swarm, jumped onto a Ducati Panigale , drove at 203 mph to a rocket where you were fired into the heavens to dock with a space station full of puppies it would still not be as exciting as this album.
I can hands down say that, alongside Low’s Hey What , Sub Atomic Party Cool is one of the most breath-taking releases of 2021. From the opening bombardment ‘B.A.D.’, Beach Riot deploy high-low riffs with laser-guided precision. Song after song gets flambéed with firestorm chords, lacerating bass from Jim and TAF drums from Jonny. There may be only two guitarists in the band, Rory and Cami, but on tracks like ‘Wrong Impression’, ‘Good To Know’, ‘Medicate For Success’ or ‘She’s A Hurricane’ it sounds like a phalanx of players equipped with army-grade fuzz pedals. Previous single release, ‘Blush’, is stratospherically brilliant and was one of my favourite tracks of 2020 with its killer opening riff, sweet-you-eat-between-meals tune, and a blistering mid-point wig out.
Only on ‘Unrequited Love’ do we get a cool down to let your adrenal gland restock before the Mick Ronson-like opening riff of ‘Faze’ kicks in. Across all the tracks there’s a feeling of the Mamas and Papas channelling Black Sabbath at light speed and this album could make walkers become joggers and joggers become sprinters. When the members of Beach Riot come together they create a new elemental force, something akin to the G-Force team in 70s anime series Battle of the Planets where they join up and become a fiery phoenix.
Sub Atomic Party Cool is a glam-bam-thank-you-ma’am triumph that captures all the energy of Ziggy and the swagger of Iggy. It’s a stack-heeled, rambunctious, full-tilt, joyous thrill-ride and I wouldn’t be surprised if, in 30 years’ time, people will be jumping around a wedding disco to ‘Blush’ in the same way they do when they hear ‘Town Called Malice’, ‘Love Shack’ or ‘The Jean Genie’.

Beach Riot announce Brighton gig at The Prince Albert
Beach Riot announce Brighton gig
Beach Riot formed back in February 2017 and started playing live at beach bars, parties and venues on the South Coast to support two previous single releases that picked up natural support from John Kennedy at Radio X and BBC Introducing, followed by a number 12 on the Amazing Radio chart and a slot at Reading and Leeds Festival.
They have announced that they are to play live in Brighton as part of their 17 date UK tour. They will be rounding off the tour on Thursday 16th December 2021 at The Prince Albert . Get your tickets HERE , HERE or HERE .
The Brighton & Hove News Music Team were fortunate to have caught Beach Riot performing in Brighton on 18th January 2020. Our reviewer, Josh Tubb, reported thus:
“The four-piece take to the stage and make a real intro with the use of cymbals and a sh*t load of pedals. Their sound is energetic and heavy, being driven at 80mph the gig space of The Hope and Ruin quickly flicks into a mosh with pints going everywhere. Their sound is complex and textured, never leaving time to breathe as the shredding guitars scream grooves over the audience. The combination of male and female vocals work well for the band’s sound and adds some diversity to the music. The crowd is thoroughly throwing themselves around over an ice rink of spilt drinks, people are falling and lashing but everyone is really nice and has a good display of crowd etiquette quickly helping up any of their fallen brothers”.
“The band play this effortlessly, being perfectly in sync and splattering the crowd with sparkling overdrive. The gig was an energetic drunken haze with most of the audience sweaty and bruised. The surf-punker tunes go down a treat as everyone leaves content. Looking forward to the next Triptych!”
“I really recommend giving these guys 2018 ‘Beach Riot EP’ a listen for some fun energy-rich tunes. A live version of their song ‘ Stuck Inside ’ has been chosen for the limited triptych vinyl and is also available to stream or purchase through Love Thy Neighbours Bandcamp”.
During lockdown, the band have been bunkered down in the studio working on the new body of material—their first full release since the 2018 ‘Beach Riot EP’ —with further details of Subatomic Party Cool to be announced over the coming months.
Commenting on the album and tour news, guitarist/vocalist Rory O’Connor says: “Recording the album was the most cathartic medicine I could ever have hoped for in an otherwise desperately terrifying and uncertain time. Playing live is the reason the universe has put Beach Riot on this planet, and there’s gonna be one hell of an explosion of emotion and energy when we finally can get back on that stage and play all these new tracks to everyone.”
“Working on the album has been like a lifeline for me,” adds drummer Jonny Ross. “Having something to focus on creatively over lockdown has been so needed and I’m glad we’ve kept momentum going.”
“I think waiting until next year is the responsible thing to do,” he continues, on the band’s headline tour announcement, “as much as we do miss playing and meeting new fans. We can’t wait to get out there in the new year with new tracks in the set.”

Beach Riot Fest
Beach Riot Fest: the new festival, which emerged in 2022, of metal, punk and rock in the great city of the Costa Blanca
For 2023 the location changes and one more day is added. It will be on May 5 and 6 at the KU, a Benidorm classic, when it opened in 1969 it was called CAP 3000 and it became one of the largest clubs in Europe, as well as standing out for its UFO shape.
This second edition of the festival will open up in styles and not only punk and metal bands will perform, but also other aspects of rock such as stoner, post rock or psychobilly.
We are committed to parity in the poster and almost 50% of the bands have a female presence and frontwoman, something that is sorely missed in other festivals in the country and that we are going to fight to maintain and improve in future editions.
The event is finished.

Why Sokolniki park is missing? Or doesn’t it exist as before ? I used to roam inside it over fifty years ago ! May be now the forest has been consumed by the concrete edifices?
