Besiktas Tupras Stadium

Besiktas Inonu Stadium, which was first constructed in 1947, was replaced by Tupras Stadium. the stadium was opened on November 3rd, 1947, by Ismet Inonu, the president of Turkey at the time and a supporter of Beşiktaş. the Inönü stadium's initial seating capacity was 16,000 people. it was christened the Mithat paşa stadium in 1952, however, this was later changed in 1973. it's also important to note that the stadium was given legal protection.

A Brief History of Vodafone Arena

Tupras Stadium was built in place of BJK İnönü Stadium, which was originally built way back in 1947. On the 3rd of November, 1947, Turkey’s then-president İsmet İnönü inaugurated the stadium, who was also a Beşiktaş fan. The initial viewer capacity of the İnönü Stadium was 16,000 people. In 1952, it was renamed as the Mithat Paşa Stadium, though this was reversed later in 1973. It is also worth mentioning that because of the unique location of the stadium, it had legal status as a "historical monument", which is protected by the Turkish High Council of Monuments. This is one of the reasons why the renewal project was postponed several times from 2004 to 2013.

Of course, a stadium that was built in 1947 didn’t withstand the test of time that well and had to be rebuilt. In 2004, the first tries were made to get the necessary permissions for the arena’s renewal, but these were delayed several times and the renewal project had to start later in 2013. The old İnönü Stadium was taken down and the new Tupras Stadium Istanbul was built over it. Tupras became the name sponsor of Beşiktaş for 3seasons and buried the letters of the fans to the arena’s foundation as a love message.

In 2016, the construction of the new arena was finished. On the 10th of April, it was inaugurated and the first match at the Tupras Stadium was played the day after between Beşiktaş and Bursaspor. Beşiktaş won this match 3-2. The 2019 UEFA Super Cup final was played in Tupras Stadium on the 14th of August, 2019. Liverpool won the game 5-4 during penalties.

About Tupras Stadium

Tupras Stadium costs around $110 million dollars, and it has the technical prowess to back that up.  Tupras Stadium's capacity  is 41.903 viewers. There are 147 suites and 1847 suite seats, 350 VIP parking areas, 2100 VIP seats, 600 standard parking areas, 81 handicap seats and 81 companion seats, an underfloor heating system, a SISAIR Underfloor Ventilation and Vacuum Drainage System, a roof and a C90 field of view.

Beşiktaş states that Tupras Stadium is designed to have multiple purposes. It is planned that the stadium will host numerous concerts and other events in the future. According to the  Tupras Stadium  Istanbul Seating Plan , there are 30 blocks on the upper floor of the tribune in addition to a press tribune. On the lower floor, there are 24 standard blocks and a VIP block. 25 different doors lead to different blocks of the tribunes. There isn’t any way of knowing the answer to the question “How is the  Tupras Stadium view from my seat ” without actually trying it, but you do not have to worry about the person in front of you blocking your view thanks to the stadium’s C90 field of view design. As for the best tribunes, blocks between 403 and 428 and 413-418 on the upper floor and the blocks between 113-118 and 103-124 provide the best angles to watch the game. If you want to see the tribunes and decide for yourself, search for a  Tupras Stadium  Seating Map  and choose one.

In addition to its football field and tribunes, Tupras Stadium also houses Beşiktaş JK Museum, a Beşiktaş Shop and a Vodafone Mobile Center.

Where is the Tupras Stadium?

Tupras Stadium in Istanbul Turkey  is located in the Beşiktaş district, which is a favorite among a lot of Istanbulites. It is on Dolmabahçe Street near the Dolmabahçe Palace and is rather close to Taksim Square and Galata Tower. There are many ways you can go to Tupras Stadium:

On Visiting Vodafone Park’s Museum & Stadium Tour | Home Of Besiktas JK

by Jub | Jan 4, 2018

Vodafone Park (a.k.a. Vodafone Arena) is home to Besiktas JK, one of the big three clubs in Istanbul. The stadium opened in April 2016 after they demolished former home, BJK İnönü Stadium, in mid-2013.

When you aren’t visiting Vodafone Park to watch Besiktas JK play, there are two reasons to visit:

  • The Besiktas JK Museum, the largest sports museum in Turkey
  • The Vodafone Arena Stadium Tour, taking you to areas you don’t have access to on game day

The following is a review of the Vodafone Park stadium tour and Besiktas JK Museum.

bestiktas lettering at vodafone park

What does the JK stand for?

Gym Club . Translated from Turkish, J imnasti K ulüp. This confused me for so long, so thought I would get that issue out of the way.

Let’s get started!

besiktas fisheye

A view of Besiktas JK Stadium with my PIxter Fisheye lens

I didn’t realise there was the option of the stadium tour before I arrived (it’s the first stadium tour in Turkey), but for an extra 10 TL to do both, it’s a no-brainer.

There are currently no stadium tours in English, so unless you have someone translating, you don’t get all the juicy info behind the energy friendly stadium.

vodafone park stadium tour review

That said, you get to see the usual aspects of a stadium tour:

  • Various views from the stands
  • Media tribune
  • Changing rooms (both home and away)
  • The players tunnel
  • And the highlight, stand at ground level by the playing surface

vodafone park vip room

VIP Box at the stadium

In 2016 the stadium was voted #1 by the public, and #2 by a jury as the best new stadium worldwide on StadiumDB.com . It’s cool they went with the circle shape too, rather than the regular rectangle used now. There’s a reason for that though.

Given the stadium’s location by the Bosphorus, surrounded by roads, and Dolmabahce Palace close by, getting the right design proved tough. They restarted plans from scratch several times to meet Government requirements. For example, Eski Açık stand and its towers couldn’t be demolished as they’re historical monuments. They also had to consider the surrounding area as the stadium needed to fit into the landscape.

You can read about it in more detail on Wikipedia , but I’d love to have gotten to know more from the tour guide. So many questions!

What I did like about the tour was the interactive parts.

There was a green screen area available for photos we stopped at. Most of the kids got on board, with their idols being displayed on the picture printed for collection post tour. They could make this an option you choose before the tour starts as it did feel like we wasted some time here.

The other interaction was in the media room. Laughs were had when a guest pretended to be a Besiktas player and the rest of the group asking him questions. This did seem fun, but again, non-Turkish speaker left me confused.

The tour took about 1 hour 45 minutes if I remember correctly. There is plenty of time to get photos on the tour but we were at capacity (or close) with 25 people on the tour. This definitely was too many, often you’re scrambling to get a photo without others in the background.

If you are going for the tour, I wouldn’t unless you are super passionate about Besiktas JK, stadium tours, or love architecture. The lack of English English takes away the magic. If you’re going to the Museum as well, you may as well do both.

Besiktas Museum Review

besiktas stadium visit

The Besiktas Museum was awesome! Yay for information boards in Turkish and English. In addition there were lots of artifacts, trophies, photos, and some unique interactive activities.

The Interactive Displays

These were the instant standout as I think back to my museum visit. I ended up there longer than 45 minutes ( my self imposed museum time limit ) as I didn’t realise there was a second floor!

besiktas art

Some cool art work on the tunnel where the bus arrives at the stadium

The Karaoke Room : Football fans love their chants, and in the (mostly) soundproofed room you can grab a microphone and sing along to the Besiktas chants karaoke style. I wasn’t singing but saw a couple happy as lads belting out the sounds before midday. Impressive.

The Crowd Noise : The Besiktas fans are famous for their noise levels, whistles piercing through the air. They’re so loud that Leipzig’s Timo Werner asked to be sustituted in September, he couldn’t handle the noise. That’s not something you do unless you really are struggling.

besiktas crowd noise game at museum

You can see how loud the noise is in the room, very cool idea

The noise room replicates noise levels when you press a button, increasing up to 162 decibels. Honestly, when I tried it, I thought it’d be louder, but never the less it was fun and something different (probably not advisable for children).

vr at besiktas museum

First time experiencing virtual reality

Virtual Reality: I’d never tried VR before! I knew what to expect as I’d watch a couple before me on the big screen. When you pop on the headset, you’re in the front seat of a roller coaster inside Vodafone Park. Very clever!

I’ve got no idea how long you are on the roller coaster for but there were a couple of moments where I was moving around as you do on a roller coaster. Virtual reality rocks!

Other Parts Of The Museum

  • a Besiktas stars section of some sorts, like the classic Hollywood thing
  • weird office replica of someone important to Besiktas
  • fun facts about football
  • A lot of photos, trophies, and random memorablia.

This is not only the largest but I would say the best sports museum in Turkey. definitely out of the three big football team museums.

How To Get To Vodafone Arena?

The stadium is fair central by Istanbul standards.

  • From the Old Town, you could walk or catch the T1 tram to Kabatas and make the 5-minute walk.
  • From the Asian side of the city, take a ferry to Kabatas and make the 5-minute walk from there.

Besiktas FC Stadium Tour - A stadium tour of Istanbul football team, Besiktas FC

Besiktas FC Stadium Tour

Besiktas are one of the top 3 Istanbul teams.  In fact they are multiple winners of the Turkish Super League.  Reasons to take a Vodafone Park stadium tour whilst in Istanbul include;

  • You’re a huge Besiktas FC fan
  • See a huge, modern stadium
  • Watch a Turkish Super League Match
  • Admire the huge trophy collection in the museum
  • Watch a music concert (Michael Jackson performed here)
  • View the exterior inspired by the Colosseum of Rome
  • Stadium is conveniently located close to several points of interest of Istanbul

I was staying at Hotel Momento Golden Horn which was just a few stops from Vodafone Park by tram.

Besiktas FC Stadium and Museum Tour - Location

Vodafone Park is opposite Dolmabahce Palace in the Besiktas district of Istanbul.  In addition it’s a short walk to Taksim Square and the main shopping street of Istanbul.  The easiest way to get to the stadium is by the Istanbul Tram.  Simply take the tram to the last stop, Kabatas and it’s a 5 minute walk.  Due to its proximity to historic buildings, the stadium was designed to fit into its surroundings.  For this reason, it was designed to look like the Colosseum in Rome.  However, I would say it resembles Pula Arena more than the Colosseum.

Besiktas FC Stadium and Museum Tour - Home Team Dressing Rooms

As you would expect in a modern stadium, the home team changing rooms are equally as modern.  Each player has his name and picture above his locker, as a result it’s much more inspirational than the away locker.  Additionally players are reminded they are in the home of the champions.  Besiktas are multiple champions with much success coming in the Turkish Super League as well as the Turkish Cup.

Players Tunnel

Besiktas FC Stadium and Museum Tour - Players Tunnel

Besiktas FC have a players tunnel which extends out onto the pitch.  Unfortunately you’re not permitted to step onto the pitch but you can walk as far as the sidelines.  The reason for the extendable players tunnel is for players (and officials) security.  Turkish football can get quite heated and fans are known to throw objects onto the pitch.  In fact it was at this stadium in April 2018 when a Fenerbahce fan threw an object at the Besiktas manager, injuring him in the process.

However, if a supplier fails to include their cancellation terms and conditions, the following rules apply, and by booking a tour, both the supplier, operators, and travelers agree to abide by them.

All parties must understand that this text will be valid if any Supplier has not added their cancellation policy to the system. By booking any supplier's tour via our website, all parties will be deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.

  • Suppliers are global companies that provide land tours and services to operators and travelers. According to the TravelShop Booking Supplier agreement, all Suppliers are responsible for adding their own terms and conditions, including information on tour cancellations.
  • All travelers and operators need to check the including and the excluding section locate in the tour detail page below the itinerary and Supplier must add this section while he/she adding his tour to the website. In the event that the included and excluded sections are empty and the parties disagree on this issue, an agreement will be reached between the parties by determining the included and excluded services on similar tours with similar prices. At this stage, the parties are deemed to have agreed to rely on the initiative of TravelShop Booking.
  • Reservations : Reservations can be made from the Tour Detail page , from the Availability section located below the itinerary. Additionally, right below the Availability section, travelers can select the Private Tour option to contact the tour operator and book the tour privately. Simply fill out your contact details and write your question; one of our experts will promptly respond to assist you. Please note that some tours may not be customized privately; therefore, there is no Private Tour option in the Availability section. Once you confirm your booking by clicking the "Book Now" button, you will be directed to the Checkout page. Firstly, enter all your details, and please double-check the names, passport, and flight details. Upon proceeding with the booking, we will charge a 25% booking deposit to your credit card.

A reservation made through the website on a regular basis cannot be changed. However, travelers can discuss the services and other details if they book the tour privately. Tours booked privately can only be changed if seats are available. Any changes to an entire private reservation will be considered a cancellation and will be subject to cancellation fees, resulting in a 100% loss of deposit.

  • Booking Changes : Once your private booking is confirmed, any changes will incur a €50.00 fee.
  • Cancellations and Refunds : Cancellation quieries must be made in wirten and signed by the traveler or tour operators.
  • Due to limited seats and the organizations being planned days in advance, any Anzac Day Gallipoli Tours will not be refunded, including the 25% deposits .
  • Please remember no refund policy applies on all flight tickets. Travelers and Operators might hae keep thie balances without refund amounths is they prefer to keep them in the system as Future Tour Credits. This is a convenient way to avoid from both no refunds and decrease the full amounts.

Future Tour Credits : This system is designed for travelers who wish or need to cancel their booking due to certain reasons. In such cases, travelers and operators can retain the full balance amount in the system and utilize it for a future tour. Additionally, travelers can book new tours from the deals pages and, by doing so, not only avoid reduced refund amounts but also avail of discounted tours.

Future Tour Credits are only applicable for tours listed on the deals page ; campaigns offering substantial discounts, such as Black Friday deals, are not valid. However, they can choose their new tours from all categories on our pages.

What Is Future Tour Credit? : Future Tour Credits is a feature that allows travelers to re-book their travel at a later date instead of canceling for some reason. Sometimes travelers may have to or want to cancel their paid travels due to reasons beyond their control. With this feature, you can specify the amount as credit and allow them to use it for their re-bookings with your brand for a new date. Suppliers and travelers can notify us through [email protected] for details.

Yacht and Hotels : The availability of accommodations is always a crucial aspect of nearly all types of tours. If the hotel listed by the Supplier in the included and excluded sections is unavailable, the Supplier is responsible for arranging a similar hotel for the traveler and notifying the traveler accordingly.

Prices : All suppliers are responsible for keeping their prices up to date. In the event that a supplier's price is not current at the time of a booked tour, they are obligated to conduct the tour at the price listed on our platform. Therefore, we strongly advise suppliers to review and update their prices at least every six months, - twice a year.

Discounts / Special Offers : If travelers book a discounted tour from any of the Suppliers, they are required to make the full payment at the time of booking. Additionally, no cancellations or refunds are accepted for discounted tours. This rule protects the supplier from potential financial losses while also incentivizing them to offer promotions.

Children Discounts : children between 0 to 11 have discounts listed below. Older than 11 years old children are charged full amount and children younger than 18 must travel with ab adult. There will be no exception about it. Also 25% of the tour coast will be charges for baby seats for buses.

Flights : If it is not a special category, generally, international and domestic flights are not included to the tours. Hence, travelers are responsible for booking their own international flight tickets and notifying the supplier of their arrival if airport transfer is promised. Flight cancellations, delays, and all types of flight penalties are the responsibility of the traveler and the airline company. The supplier bears no responsibility in such cases.

Tours included domestic flight tickets : Certain tour packages feature domestic flight tickets. In this case, the supplier needs to provide you with copies of all your flight tickets, tour vouchers, itinerary, hotel contact information, and confirmation emails. Additionally, these documents will be included in your welcome pack upon arrival at the airport. It's crucial to carefully review all information (names, arrival and departure times, flight details, etc.) and promptly notify us of any discrepancies. Once booked and confirmed, we cannot be held responsible for any errors in this information. Please note that a maximum of 15-20 kilograms is allowed on domestic flights.

Insurance : Having travel insurance will protect travelers against unexpected situations such as health problems, flight delays, burglaries, etc., during your tour. Therefore, we highly advise all travelers to obtain insurance before departure.

a. The following insurance policies, which are not included in any tour packages, can be helpful against unforeseen circumstances.

b. Travel cancellation insurance: This helps minimize financial risk in case the traveler needs to cancel before departure.

c. Travel interruption insurance: This helps minimize financial risk in case the traveler experiences an interruption during the trip after departure.

Adequate health insurance.

All suppliers need to provide travelers with the transport schedule, luggage limit information, airport transfers, guides, and meeting point information via email and upon meeting travelers in person. Additionally, it is the travelers' responsibility to review the instructions carefully and not to miss the meeting points and times.

Entrance Fees : All entrance fees mentioned in the itinerary are included in the tour price and will be paid before or during the tour. Additionally, travelers have the option to visit museums and other places with entrance fees at their own expense if they wish.

Accommodation : Suppliers are required to provide the hotels listed in the itinerary. However, in cases where the listed hotels are unavailable due to reasons such as seasonality or other mandatory circumstances, suppliers must offer similar alternatives to the travelers.

Check in and check out : According to global standards, hotel check-in time is typically 14:00, and check-out time is 12:00. To inquire about early check-in and late check-out options, suppliers and/or travelers need to contact the hotel directly.

Photos and Videos during tour : At times, Suppliers gather photos and videos to share on their social media accounts and for marketing purposes. Suppliers should always ask for travelers' permission first. Travelers have the option to decline participation in these visual documents. If travelers notice any photos or videos being shared without their consent, please inform your Supplier and us ( [email protected] ) to have them removed.

Tipping : Tipping, like in the rest of the world, is a cultural practice that fosters goodwill and encourages helpfulness. Please check your itinerary for tipping details or ask your Supplier.

Vodafone Arena: Beşiktaş J.K.

besiktas stadium visit

By Aykerim27 (Own work) [ CC BY-SA 4.0 ], via Wikimedia Commons

The Vodafone Arena was built on the same site as Beşiktaş’ former ground, BJK İnönü Stadium. It opened in 2016 and has a capacity of about 43,500. That capacity includes 144 executive suites and an executive lounge named in honour of when the club was formed in 1903, the 1903 Lounge. The stadium cost in the region of $80 million dollars to build and was designed by the architects DB.

Built right next to the Bosphorus, the stadium is one of the most modern in the entire world. It is what is called a ‘smart stadium’ as it is fitted with high-speed Wi-Fi courtesy of Cisco Systems. There is also something called StadiumVision in place within the ground, that allows supporters to watch HD video throughout the ground.

Vodafone Arena Seating Plan and Where to Sit

besiktas stadium visit

The Vodafone Arena is, like most new stadiums, built in a ‘bowl’ style, with continuous seating all the way around the ground. There are four sections with two-tiers in each section. The stands are best described by their geographical location, with The East Stand and The West Stand running alongside the pitch. The North and South Stands are behind the two goals, with The South Stand being the closest to the Bosphorus.

Beşiktaş Ticket Prices

Beşiktaş tend to release their ticket prices a few weeks before the games, so it’s tricky to know exactly how much tickets are likely to cost from one minute to the next. The main thing worth noting is that matches rarely sell-out, so you’ll be able to get a ticket on the day of the game unless it’s against one of the club’s biggest rivals.

How To Get Beşiktaş Tickets

The best place to go for tickets is the Beşiktaş club website.

Getting To Vodafone Arena

Though not the capital of Turkey, Istanbul is arguably the most famous and popular part of the country. For that reason it’s easy enough to get there, depending on where you’re travelling from:

Train – It would take you two days to get from London to Istanbul on the train, so maybe swerve that particular option. The stadium is a five minute walk from Taksim Square, though, so Taksim Metro Station will be your best bet.

Bus – In the heart of the city centre, the ground is served by a host of buses that take you anywhere near the middle of Istanbul.

Car – Your best bet if you’re hoping to drive to the ground is to get a satellite navigation system and put the address of Vodafone Arena into it.

By Air – The Ataturk Airport is just over ten miles from the centre of Istanbul.

Taxi – A taxi from the airport straight to the ground will take about three quarters of an hour and will cost just over 61 Turkish Lira.

Parking Near Vodafone Arena

The stadium is surrounded by main roads, so parking spaces are few and far between. There are 600 spaces within the stadium that are reserved for VIP supporters.

Vodafone Arena Hotels

As one of Turkey’s most popular destinations it’s fair to say that Istanbul has got more than a couple of hotel options. Here are some you might want to consider:

Istanbul is a city with a great atmosphere and some fabulous places to get a drink or two. Here are some of our favourites:

Sultan Pub & Cafe

The junction bar.

The Vodafone Arena is one of the most modern in the world, so the facilities are excellent. The views are great from all around and there are numerous places to get food and drink, too.

Hospitality

besiktas stadium visit

There are a host of executive boxes and VIP seating areas in the Vodafone Arena, but the main one is the 1903 Lounge. There’s a panoramic view from the room and your get food as part of your package.

Private Hire

At the moment the club hasn’t released anything too specific information about private hire of its facilities, but the stadium can also be used as a concert venue, meeting venue, and a space for fashion shows to take place.

Stadium Tours & Museum

The museum is pretty new, which is an odd thing to say about a museum, and costs 25 Turkish Lira to get in. Tours are available too and are very affordable. During the hour long experience you can expect to see the changing rooms, walk through the player’s tunnel, take in the media areas and more.

About Beşiktaş

besiktas stadium visit

Known in the UK simply as Beşiktaş, the full title of the club is actually Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü and that, you might be able to work out, translates as Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club. That’s because it is the footballing arm of a sports club that was established in 1903. The footballing side has essentially taken over nowadays, with the gymnastics part of the club acknowledged in the letters JK normally following the Beşiktaş part of the title. There are basketball, volleyball and boxing departments still in existence, however.

The club is one of the ‘big three’ clubs in Turkish football alongside Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. Beşiktaş have never been relegated from the top-flight, known as the Super Lig, and have won it sixteen times. They’ve won the Turkish Cup ten times and the Turkish Super Cup nine times. In Europe they’ve reached the quarter-finals of both the UEFA Cup and the European Cup in the past, though they’ve never won either.

Vodafone Arena History

besiktas stadium visit

The history of the Vodafone Arena is yet to be written, with the ground only opening its doors for the first time in April 2016. It was built in the same location as the BJK İnönü Stadium where the club had played their games since their inception. It was originally planned to have just over 41,000 seats but the capacity ended up being 43,500.

The only part of the old ground that wasn’t demolished was The Eski Açık Stand, which couldn’t be knocked down as it is considered to be an historical monument. It is arranged to look like an old-fashioned amphitheatre and the rest of the stadium has been designed to fit alongside it. According to the club the new stadium has been designed to be ‘in harmony with the natural and historic landscape of the Bosphorus’.

Future Developments

besiktas stadium visit

As one of the newest and most state-of-the-art stadiums in the world it is unlikely that major renovations will be carried out to the Vodafone Arena any time soon.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

besiktas stadium visit

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
