O.j. simpson dead at 76 after battle with cancer.

It may not have made any money, but the lightly attended H.O.R.D.E. tour at the Meadows Music Theatre was a blessing for those who went to it Wednesday.

Not only did they get the strongest lineup of any touring festival this summer, but great weather and no lines to boot.

Once an excuse for tie-dye bands to jam, H.O.R.D.E. (which stands for Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) is now hip. It accomplished something Lollapalooza was never able to do: snare Neil Young to headline. Then it added such cool acts as Beck, Kula Shaker, Morphine, and Medeski Martin & Wood.

Young’s 11-song set was a blazing model in rock relevancy. Aside from a few expected anthems, such as “Hey Hey, My My” to “Rockin’ in the Free World,” he and his backing trio, Crazy Horse, turned to less obvious choices from his long and distinguished catalog, including “Crime in the City,” and the encore “Mansion on the Hill.”

Long codas of brooding, feedback-laden guitar interplay followed “Slip Away” and “Hippie Dream,” the latter song seemingly speaking to H.O.R.D.E. organizers.

The three-song acoustic portion was surprisingly effective and direct, with “This Note’s for You” (maybe he didn’t see the list of eight H.O.R.D.E. corporate sponsors) and “From Hank to Hendrix.” “Ohio,” which he said he sang from time to time to remember the Kent State victims he wrote about, had a deeply personal touch as well.

While Young was alternately tender and blazing, Beck was simply a blast. Heavy into his ’70s funk mode, he wore a second- hand suit to rouse the crowd, dance, strike poses and revert to old school raps. The last time he was in Hartford, for Lollapalooza ’95, he sang to an empty amphitheater as sod flew. This time he got the crowd rocking with a roster of splashy hits, including a splendidly extended “Where It’s At.”

Primus, a Lollapalooza ’93 veteran, was also a big draw on the main stage, with Les Claypool’s authoritative bass and quirky humor leading the way. Kula Shaker, the only English group on the bill, seemed to be plagued with technical difficulties on rock that sounded, without live sitars, even more like Oasis. Medeski Martin and Wood provided their cool Hammond B3 instrumentals to an early main stage crowd of literally dozens.

There were some slow moments in the 8 1/2-hour concert. Boston’s Mudhens didn’t leave much of an impression; Toad the Wet Sprocket’s middling pop sounded thinner than usual.

Acts of interest on the secondary stage included the low tones of Morphine, completing its H.O.R.D.E. tour of duty. A big crowd also turned out for the early evening set by Ben Folds Five, a North Carolina trio that’s augmented for the current tour by a four-piece string section led by classical violinist Lorenza Ponce. It was an interesting approach for the knockdown ’70s piano-led pop of the band; the group still sounded a little squirrelly.

The only real hippie band on either stage (or an act that would have fit in with the hippified H.O.R.D.E. of yore) was the Boulder, Colo., outfit of Leftover Salmon, which combined bluegrass instruments with rock, allowing a Metallica edge on a banjo breakdown. It sounds more interesting than it actually was, though.

For all its forced dissonance, the band Cake Like (signed to Neil Young’s label, Vapor) was easy to like, with its simple, rocking songs and succinct imagery. Besides, guitarist Nina Hellman said, “We’re the only all-female band you’ll see at the H.O.R.D.E. this year.”

Also in the second stage area, amid the commercial booths and market surveys, a third stage was dedicated to jamming, led by Col. Bruce Hampton and a member of his Fiji Mariners. Among the participants on the freewheeling stage were, at one point, members of Morphine, Beck’s horn section and Ben Folds on drums.

A show-opening acoustic set from Young on the jam stage, though, was scotched, as the 51- year-old feigned a sore throat and played instead with the huge Lionel Train setup with his son.

A slightly different lineup for H.O.R.D.E plays Great Woods in Mansfield, Mass., Friday and Saturday.

The song list for Neil Young & Crazy Horse Wednesday was: “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black),” “Crime in the City,” “Hippie Dream,” “F*!?’ Up,” “This Note’s for You,” “From Hank to Hendrix,” “Ohio,” “Rockin’ in The Free World,” “Slip Away,” “Sedan Delivery” (encore) “Mansion On The Hill.”

Beck is stage name of American singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Beck Hansen, known for his genre blurring, experimental style, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

With the creative juices of his arranger/conductor father David Campbell and mother Bibbe Hansen, who was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory and pertinent to the rise of the Fluxus art movement, Beck dropped out of school in 10th grade to busk on the streets and attend poetry slams. After adopting a folk and blues style on the home recording “The Banjo Story”, Beck worked alongside Karl Stephenson to create a collection of songs with folk sensibilities combined with hip-hop beats. The musician’s debut release came with the single “MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack” followed by the 17-track cassette “Golden Feelings” in 1993.

Beck’s move into the musical consciousness however didn’t arrive until the label Bong Load released the 12” single of the timeless hit “Loser”. The singer-songwriter subsequently signed with Geffen Records that meant he could released through independent labels, through which he released the 10” “A Western Harvest Field” in 1994. Beck’s debut full-length “Mellow Gold” arrived in March 1994, and shot to success on the back of the single “Loser”. Combining the infectious groove of blues guitar with the hip hop rhythm reminiscent of the Beastie Boys, the single and album became a smash.

In fear of becoming a novelty act, Beck quickly released a pair of LPs “Stereopathetic Soul Manure” and “One Foot In the Grave” in 1994. The minimalist nature of the latter showcased the singer-songwriter’s musical depth, and proved Beck wasn’t another one trick pony. After an extensive period of touring in 1994 and into 1995 including shows on the Lollapalooza tour, Beck enlisted the help of the Beastie Boys’ production team the Dust Brothers to work on his sophomore. “Odelay” appeared in mid-1996 to overwhelming commercial and critical success, earning a Grammy nomination in 1997. The album spawned the singles “Where It’s At”, “Devils Haircut”, and “The New Pollution”, and generated a huge amount of exposure and publicity.

Leaving the cut and paste process of the Dust Brothers’ production style behind, 1998’s “Mutations” was noted for its live, no-doctoring approach. The album once again earned positive reviews and resulted in Beck winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in 1999. Taking influence from the hip hop and R&B act R. Kelly, the singer-songwriter worked alongside bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, to produce his seventh studio album “Midnight Vultures”. The album, released in 1999, aimed to be an upbeat and energetic record that would be enjoyable and fun to play on tour.

The acoustic album “Sea Change” arrived in 2002 as a result of the break-up of Beck's nine-year relationship, followed by the full-length “Guero” in 2005. “Guero” spawned the hits “E-Pro” and “Hell Yes” and led to the remix of the entire album entitled “Guerolito”. Produced by Danger Mouse, Beck released “Modern Guilt” in 2008, which debuted at No. eight on the Billboard 200 and earned favourable reviews. Beck subsequently focused on production and worked alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg, Thurston Moore, and Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. New material arrived in 2012 with the collection of sheet music “Song Reader” followed in 2014 by the album “Morning Phase”, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned Beck three Grammys in 2015 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Rock Album, and Album of the Year.

Live reviews

Just saw his first headlining show in MSG in NYC. Tickets were a mess bc they kept lowering the prices with secret sales, angering fans who bought the $$$ ones quickly. Cheap seats for ex, went from 49 to 30 to 17 (Only I found the 2 day $17 deal on TM apparently). They wanted to fill the stadium to honor Becks 1st headlining tour to a large arena like Madison Square Garden I guess, bc sales were slow. Only pissed fans off.

I was like 6 when Beck came out, but I guess everyone else was MY AGE (30), bc lot of old farts in the crowd, many of whom sat the whole show, either writhing occasionally or stoic as if watching the ballet. I was up out of my seat dancing like silly string and singing, esp at the end of the set list, which was 80% filler. About 6 famous or fantastically upbeat songs were omitted.... Gamma Ray, Hell Yes, Nausea, Time Bomb, Tropicalia, etc. And he spoke more often than any artist I've ever seen (I've seen at least 100). Also sound quality was low during the first part of the 2 hr show. The encore was fake bc I was already told the show ends at 11, which it did after the encore. And oddly enough, a song that was JUST DONE was REPEATED for the encore, rather than choosing from his extensive catalog.

The highlight of the show was Beck saying that his grandfather emigrated from whatever country to the U.S.... ILLEGALLY, and the crowd roared in support!--me included! That was a big FUCK YOU TRUMP moment, and I was happy to be among that.

Seeing Beck live is by far a must for everyone. Whether you are a diehard fan of this güero or just familiar with "Loser" and other hits, you will surely be entertained by the creativity that Beck often puts into his shows.

While some of my favorite memories are from the last minute, "secret" warm up shows that Beck often performs at small LA clubs like The Echo, it is the tour shows where his production skills match his musical talent. From the large king bed that descended upon LA's Greek Theatre stage during the classic slow jam "Debra" to being accompanied by a very unique male dancer/cowbell instrumentalist at the OC Fairgrounds, a Beck show has it all.

Probably the most memorable show was at The Wiltern where the entire show was re-enacted in real time...on stage...by a full band of marionette puppets.

And as many fans of Beck know, the singer has two sides - mellow ("Sea Change") Beck...and funky whiteboy ("Midnight Vultures") Beck. If you are lucky, you'll get a bit of both when you see him live. In both cases, not only will you get great music but you'll definitely get introduced to Beck and his bandmates' often off-beat and spontaneously creative humor. (He loves to talk about his Hyundai Excel).

A Beck show is not to be missed! Bottles and cans, just clap your hands!

The Kansas City show was amazing, a perfect concert. I've been going to concerts since I was 15 (45 years) and this ranks in my top 2 all time. The band was a perfect fit, the stage was amazing, the visuals added did not detract from music (I was at another show last month in Boston where the visual totally distracted from the music). I have not seen Beck before despite highly ranking him, he was a bucket list artist. I was a little surprised by his comfort on stage, goofy but legitimate cool, relaxed in charge but allowed the band to do their thing. You realize the expansive genre's he crosses and it's amazing. At my age, it's a challenge for a band to get me off my feet but I was dancing entire concert. It was the happiest concert I've been to in quite some time. Strangely maybe because he crosses so many genres he remains vastly underappreciated. idiots like Kanye West don't seem to see the genius. He traces his lineage during the show, "I wanna take you higher" (Sly Stone), covered Rasberry Beret (Prince) first few bars of Strawberry Field (Beatles) that's Beck. Dude improved 1 of his songs to guitar of More than a Feeling then followed with Hank Williams cover and into I'm So Free- cmon who else can do that credibly? I want to go again tonight that's how good it was.

As darkness descended on Queens’ historic Forest Hills stadium Beck greeted a crowd still buzzing over the sweat-soaked performance art from Matt Shultz of Cage the Elephant. But with cool self-assurance Beck and his six-piece backing band launched into “Loser” and the audience focus was completely reset. Hard to believe this genre-shifting rock elf from LA is 49 years old, because he still looks and moves like a twenty-something. His playlist leaned heavily on the albums “Colors”, “Guero”, and “Odelay”. He worked from a large physical set up, including a two-tiered stage with rear video panel. Pyrotechnics were subordinate to the music, except for large white and silver ballon balls that were released into the audience. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing towards the stage and the balloons kept bumping into the musicians, creating a minor distraction from an otherwise satisfying set from this immensely talented musician.

For the last 20 years, I've always been both aware of Beck and impressed with the variety of his work, but wouldn't consider myself a big fan. Of course I can sing along with songs like Loser and Where It's At, but I'd never seen him before in concert. I figure Beck will go down as one of the true great artists of my generation so I figured it would be worthwhile to check him out in concert. I really am enjoying his new album and in particular the single Blue Moon so I decided to attend his show in Raleigh. It was a fantastic show, full of energy on a hot and sweaty summer night in an outdoor amphitheater. Beck paraded out a tour de force through his 20 year career and kept the crowd singing, dancing, and sweating all night.

I was truly surprised by how much I enjoyed this show, and his excellent backing band. I'll definitely see Beck again, and won't wait another 20 years to do it.

Beck was great. Fun, engaging, humorous, and, of course, more talented than just about anyone out there. I will always see him as much as I can.

Red Rocks, on the other hand, used to be the greatest venue in the world, but all the Colorado potheads are ruining it fast. We took four kids and they were miserable. The smoke was nonstop. The Red Rocks staff do not enforce their own rules. They completely ignore what’s going on in the crowd. And the sound was so loud that even with earplugs it was painful. From what I hear that’s been true of more and more shows at Red Rocks this year, so I’m not sure if that’s a venue thing or an artist thing. Either way, it’s just not necessary to be that loud.

This review in no way reflects poorly on Beck. This was the third tome I’ve seen him and he’s always fantastic. But Colorado needs to take a f-Ing break with all the smoking.

Secund time we've seen Beck and he was awesome and entertaining yet again-maybe even surpassing himself. Aligned with incredible musicians and this time a backing chorus with 2 women and a dude who also played various instruments (guitar, shoulder strap keyboard, mandolin/tambourine/etc., ) and danced in an elevated stage behind the front band-it had a throwback quality and was very entertaining. And as usual Beck excels art his solo breakout/improv/cover session which makes every performance unique regardless of playlist repetition. Beck is one of the hardest working acts out there (as is the Foo Fighters, whom we saw a week before!)

Absolutely perfect! Enjoyed every second of it from start to finish! Wouldn't hesitate to see the exact same show again!! Only two minor complaints:

1: I wish the concert had been longer, but a 100 minutes is pretty solid (I'm just super greedy)

2: I wish he had played more morning phase stuff (Waking Light and Blue Moon, would both had been welcome additions!) I also really wish he would have played Heavens Ladder (but that might be too much to ask if you're catering to less hardcore fans)

All in all I loved it and hope he'll do a full tour soon! (Morning Phade tour!? Pleeeease!!!)

Beck was a ton of fun! It is worth mentioning that he plays a lot of the new songs so if you hate the new album, this might not be the tour for you. That being said, if you want a rollicking good time, you gotta see Beck. He is so comfortable on stage he could almost be accused of being too loose, but it really does feel like hanging out with him. He worked in 3 songs from Midnite Vultures so there are plenty of treats for diehard fans but he will still play the hits. And the acoustic interlude featuring songs from Morning Phase and Sea Change will of course be my favorite part.

Amazing!! It's got to be Red Rocks that make artists want to try things at concerts. Getting the audience involved in making a song on the spot is something I've seen several artist do at Red Rocks now. Anyways, the band was spot on. He played a ton of classics, starting the show off with 'Devils Haircu'. A couple acoustic hits and just two new songs 'Dreams' and 'Wow'. Have the second half of the show with Preservation Hall Jazz Band added. A great show, I would give it an 8/10

Beck Tours His Eclectic Catalog at Madison Square Garden Headlining Debut

By Eric Renner Brown

Eric Renner Brown

Midway through his first-ever headlining show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Beck Hansen paused to make an admission – it wasn’t “actually, technically” his debut at the vaunted venue. He had a story to tell.

It was the 1997 Grammys, and his album Odelay  was up for Album of the Year. After performing the album’s hit single, “Where It’s At,” for the telecast, Beck was “whisked around the catacombs backstage into some weird holding area.” Disoriented, the young star looked around. “There was one other figure there,” he recounted. “It was Bruce Springsteen. I just looked at him and he looked at me … I said, ‘What are you doing here?’ And he looked back at me and said, ‘What are you  doing here?'”

At 48, Beck is the same age today that Springsteen turned that year. And his career trajectory to this point bears some similarities to that of the Boss: Both started young and became known for prolific, versatile songwriting. Both explored multiple styles to popular and critical acclaim. Both eventually settled into roles as seasoned rock vets.

That’s the Beck who took the stage at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. Clad in his modern uniform of black blazer and wide-brimmed hat, he seemed less interested in cosplaying as a younger version of himself – the funk-rock freak or the dour folkie – than he did in delivering a polished, career-spanning performance. Like Radiohead and Foo Fighters, two Nineties and 2000s alternative peers who also played the venue in recent days, Beck is classic rock now, and he leaned into it.

Staples like “Devils Haircut” and “E-Pro” whirred along just fine, even if they lacked some of the spark that once characterized them. And Beck has sadly abandoned the slide-guitar theatrics he has brought to “Loser” in the past. Some songs from 2017’s upbeat, pop-oriented Colors impressed – the effervescent, late-career gem “Dreams,” particularly – while others, like deep cut “I’m So Free,” seemed out of place. (“We’re going to play something from the new record that you probably don’t know,” Beck admitted before kicking that one off, tacitly encouraging the crowd to grab another drink or hit the head.)

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

But Beck sensed the gig’s significance and leveraged it to create some outstanding moments. For Beatles-esque Colors confection “Dear Life,” he invited Spoon frontman Britt Daniel to join him, and the duo traded verses seamlessly before segueing into Spoon’s beloved “I Turn My Camera On.” Jenny Lewis, who delivered a charming opening set on short notice after Glass Animals dropped off the bill, came out to assist 1994 rarity “Girl Dreams,” which Beck said she’d suggested days earlier via text. “I said, ‘I don’t think anybody’s going to know that one,'” Beck recalled. “Then she said, ‘Well, Bill Murray really likes that song.’ So I was like, ‘Hell, yeah, we’re going to do that song!'”

Elsewhere, Beck’s 2000s catalog provided multiple highlights. From clear harmonies to thunderous drum breaks, every element of “Think I’m In Love,” off 2006’s The Information , popped – and then Beck teleported the tune to the dance floor with a cover of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” that channeled LCD Soundsystem’s visceral disco-punk. For 2005’s infectious Guero standout “Girl,” he managed to pull off a peculiar allusion to the hook of frenemy Kanye West’s “Power.” Sea Change centerpiece “Lost Cause” was the uncontested highlight of the set’s brief acoustic sequence and emphasized Beck’s unparalleled stylistic versatility.

Beck also repeatedly honored New York, the city he adopted as an 18-year-old fresh off a Greyhound bus and that his great-great-grandfather immigrated to – illegally, he noted in a not-so-subtle political jab – from Norway long ago. Naturally, he saved an epic Big Apple homage for the encore. Now dressed in a white  blazer and hat, Beck launched into that same song he played two decades earlier at the Garden, tricking it out with the “Let me take you down …” lyric from “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

But he quickly steered “Where It’s At” in another direction, introducing the members of his band and prompting them to lead covers of iconic New York artists. A Tribe Called Quest, Chic, Television, the Velvet Underground and Talking Heads all received their due – bonus points to Beck’s backup singers for tweaking the “Once in a Lifetime” lyrics to “And you may ask yourself where it’s at/And you may find yourself with two turntables and a microphone.”

“I’ve made all these records over the years, just sort of skipping around styles and sounds and tones,” Beck had noted earlier in the show. “So many of you have gone along with it – or at least indulged me. Thank you for indulging me so often.” As he closed out his Garden show with a batty medley of covers, the audience indulged him yet again – and Beck didn’t disappoint.

Beck Set List

“Devil’s Haircut” “The New Pollution” “Mixed Bizness” “Up All Night” “Wow” “Qué Onda Guero” “Think I’m in Love”/”I Feel Love” “I’m So Free” “Dear Life” (with Britt Daniel) “I Turn My Camera On” (with Britt Daniel) “Girl Dreams” (with Jenny Lewis) “Lost Cause” “Blue Moon” “Dreams” “Girl” “Colors” “Loser” “E-Pro”

Encore “Where It’s At” “Can I Kick It?”/”Good Times”/”See No Evil”/”I’m Waiting for the Man”/”Taking It to the Streets”/”Once in a Lifetime”/”In the Air Tonight”/”One Foot in the Grave” “Where It’s At” (Reprise)

Beck To Open For Bob Dylan

beck tour 1997

Bob Dylan and Beck on the same stage for one night -- fan Vinod Shankar can't even believe it.

If he didn't have tickets to the show, that is.

"Beck opening for Dylan is a wonderful thing, if only that it will hopefully make him aware to those music lovers who don't necessarily listen to stuff like 'Where It's At,' " said Shankar, who describes himself as an equal-opportunity Beck/Dylan fan, and who will be attending the Dec. 16 Los Angeles show featuring Beck opening for the folk-rock legend.

Despite his being called "The Dylan of the '90s" by some, Beck and the folk-rock giant bare no resemblance musically, Shankar added. "They're both creative lyricists, diverse musicians, with a solid background in the early country and blues that is oh-so-influential. I'm excited for the concert. It's a dream-pairing, and a once-in-a-lifetime show."

Dylan is lining-up an impressive list of opening acts for an upcoming stint of dates at L.A.'s 900-capacity El Rey Theater; only techno-rock wonder Beck has been confirmed. Beck will share the stage with Dylan on the opening night of Dylan's five-night stand, according to Renee Pfeffer of Dylan's label, Columbia.

The rest of the acts, however, are being kept hush-hush.

"I've heard all kinds of rumors," said Rodney Nardi, manager of the intimate theater, which was formerly a movie house. "People calling up have said they've heard everyone from Sheryl Crow to Jewel, Van Morrison and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but nobody has even told me yet who the other ones will be."

The setting is a familiar one for Beck who played a Nov. 19 date at the club with the same country-leaning band he appeared with at this year's Farm Aid concert in Illinois, but who will take the stage solo for this gig. The five shows are part of a series of rare club dates by Dylan, who also will be playing some intimate shows in Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C., topped off by five dates in January at New York's Madison Square Garden with Northern Ireland rock-legend Van Morrison.

Nardi said he'd heard from Dylan's advance team, who toured the venue in late October, that the folk legend's lighting director was impressed not only with the El Rey's clear site lines, but also because "his feet didn't stick to the floor when he walked around."

Lisa Cordero, sales manager at the Westwood Village Tower Records in L.A., said that even though Beck's appearance wasn't announced when tickets went on sale Nov. 15, "Beck was a huge attraction for fans. As soon as they knew, it was a big reason why tickets sold out."

Viewing the booking coup as a "real rubber stamp" for the year-old venue, which has also hosted shows by everybody from Guided by Voices to Tricky, the Cardigans and Spiritualized, Nardi said he was as psyched as fans were about the shows. "You know how you get excited about something and then you try and control it because it's not confirmed?" he said. "The last thing you want to do is jinx yourself. People who are calling up seem really psyched, though.

"There's the people who call in who've never been here who have tickets and want to know what the room is like and then there's the ones who call and are disappointed and keep asking 'Are you sure it's sold out? Are you sure?' Then there's a long silence and you feel like you want to reach out and help them, but you can't."

Not every Beck fan sees the inaugural El Rey date as a great meeting of the folk-rock minds though.

"I don't know that Dylan could be called one of Beck's 'idols' from what I've

heard," wrote the 43-year-old Deborah Gilmore, webmaster of the Beck fan site Slo-Jam Central. "I understand he respects the man's work. Many people have gone to great lengths to find comparisons between Beck and Dylan, but the only real thing they have in common is an understanding of folk music and how to freshen it up and adapt it to their times."

Beck's lyrics, she added, are more Dadaist than Dylan's, referring to the surreal art form. "The artists' brush strokes are not the same. In the future critics and fans alike will look back and say that Beck had as much or more of an impact on the history of music as Dylan did."
