A ‘ Swiss Travel Pass’ gives visitors to the country unlimited travel across the Swiss travel system for a continuous period of 3, 4, 8 or 15 days.

There is another variation, known as the ‘Swiss Travel Pass Flex’ which offers unlimited travel on flexible days (rather than on consecutive days).

It’s also available for either 3, 4, 8 or 15 travel days, but across an overall period of a month.

A 3-day Swiss Travel Pass costs GBP211 and an 8-day pass GBP354 (as at March 2023). You can check all the current prices at their website

A second class return ticket from Zurich to Zermatt typically costs CHF118. From Geneva it’s slightly less at CHF98.

However, if you want to break your journey over several days and spend more time in Switzerland, or you plan to take advantage of the discounts offered in Zermatt (see below), then a Swiss Travel Pass is likely to be a better option.

The ‘Swiss Travel Pass Flex’ is typically a better choice than the regular ‘Swiss Travel Pass’ if you’re plan to stay put between journeys (say if you are coming to Zermatt for a week).

The Swiss Travel Pass Youth ticket means that young people under 26 can claim a 15% discount on the pass.

Children under 16 do not need a ticket at all, and travel for free as long as they are travelling with an adult who has a valid ticket.

One single ticket

The way the Swiss Travel Pass works is that you either download it to your phone, or with a physical copy, simply sign your ticket before starting your first journey.

You then have to show it the ticket inspector together with your passport or identity card when asked.

What to do at the top of Gornergrat?

Main Gornergrat Viewpoint - arguably, the best part of the Gornergrat experience is the viewpoint from the top. From the Viewing Platform, on a clear day, you can see 29 different 4000m mountain peaks! It’s an incredible view that shouldn’t be missed!

ZOOOM the Matterhorn - an interactive experience at the Gornergrat Station that includes a 3D cinema, high zooming periscopes and an immersive paragliding flight simulation. Entry to ZOOOM the Matterhorn is free with Gornergrat Train tickets, or 12 CHF per person during winter with a valid ski pass.

‘Golden Spot’ Photo - one of the very original train carriages used on the Gornergrat Railway has been painstakingly repaired, gold-plated and put in situ at the top of the Gornergrat. It’s the perfect place to grab an amazing Instagram photo!

Telescopes with mountain peak information - one cool thing we loved at the top of the Gornergrat that we weren’t expecting was the free-to-use telescopes dotted around the viewing platform. Not only can you see the mountain peaks better from the telescopes, but when you look through them, you are given the names of the peaks and their altitude. It’s quite impressive really.

Hiking from Gornergrat

Riffelsee lake hiking trail from rotenboden station (summer only).

The Riffelsee Lake Trail is an easy, 1hr long hike from Rotenboden Station (5th stop on the Gornergrat Train) to the magnificent Riffelsee Lake.

Even if you don’t know it, you have probably seen photos of Riffelsee Lake - it’s the one where, on a clear day, the Matterhorn reflects in the lake. It makes for a really magical scene!

Rotenboden - Riffelberg (via Iglu Dorf - Winter Only)

It is worth mentioning that there is a dedicated Rotenboden - Riffelberg Hiking Trail (Hiking trail 113, 1 hour) or the Panorama Trail (Hiking trail 142, 1 hour 30 mins), which is a dedicated snowshoe trail. Both take you from Rotenboden Station to Riffelberg Station.

However, we wanted to put our spin on it by hiking from Rotenboden to Riffelberg via the magical Iglu Dorf - an igloo hotel complete with a bar, Aprés Ski area and even a whirlpool!

The hike itself is very short - only 15 minutes to Iglu Dorf from Rotenboden Station - and most of the time, you actually follow the ski runs (just be careful of any skiers going a little too fast).

We wanted to highlight this alternative hike because it is our favourite short walk in Zermatt and you obviously get the chance to have a relaxing drink in an igloo in the middle of your hike.

Tips for Riding the Gornergrat Train

Try to sit on the right-hand side of the train so you can gaze at the Matterhorn on your way up the mountain

Be aware of the final ascent/descent times of the day - you don’t want to be caught out at the top of the mountain with no way down

During Winter , the first couple of hours of the day will be full of skiers using the train to get to the slopes. If you’re a non-skier, we’d recommend waiting to catch the train until after 10am for a better chance of having a seat by the window

During Summer , you can buy a special Gornergrat Hiking Ticket from Zermatt that allows you to travel from Zermatt - Gornergrat, and back down from Riffelberg - Zermatt. It means you save money on the legs you’ll miss on the way back down.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Gornergrat Train

Can i use the swiss travel pass on gornergrat is zermatt included in the swiss travel pass.

The answer, unfortunately, is no you can’t use the Swiss Travel Pass on the Gornergrat Railway.

The reason is that Gornergrat is a privately owned Railway line, and the Swiss Travel Pass only covers state-owned lines.

With that being said, however, if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass , you are entitled to 50% off the original ticket price for the Gornergrat.

Is the Gornergrat Railway worth it?

Absolutely yes, the Gornergrat Railway is definitely worth it! We appreciate that it is a very expensive train ride. Indeed, perhaps aside from the train to Machu Picchu, we’ve never spent in excess of £100 for a 33-minute train ride, but we feel it’s worth every penny.

The panoramic views from the Gornergrat are well documented, but we think what makes the train fee worth it, is everything you get access to along the line. That’s why the Gornergrat features on our magical 4-day winter itinerary in Zermatt .

Particularly in Winter, the Iglu Dorf, Rotenboden-Riffelberg Tobogganing Trail and the Gornergrat Viewpoint are all accessed via the Gornergrat train, making the train ride just part of the overall experience of Gornergrat!

How long is the Gornergrat Railway?

From the Zermatt Gornergrat Station in Zermatt Village to the highest Gornergrat Station, the Gornergrat Railway takes 33 minutes from top to bottom.

Can you get on and off the Gornergrat train?

Provided you have the correct ticket, you can get on and off the Gornergrat train at every single station but you are only allowed to ride each leg of the journey once.

Here’s a few examples to explain what is allowed and what isn’t allowed with a regular Gornergrat Train ticket:

Allowed - Get on at Zermatt Gornergrat (Station 1), get off at Rotenboden (Station 5) to hike to Riffelsee Lake. Get back on the train at Rotenboden (Station 5) and continue up to Gornergrat (Station 6). Get out at Gornegrat, visit ZOOOM the Matterhorn, and get back on the train at Gornergrat (Station 6) to return to Zermatt (Station 1).

Not allowed - Get on at Zermatt Gornergrat Station (Station 1), get off at Rotenboden (Station 5) to do the Rotenboden-Rifellberg Toboggan. Get back on the train at Riffelberg (Station 4) after tobogganing and go up to the Gornergrat (Station 6). In this scenario, riding the train upwards between Riffelberg (Station 4) and Rotenboden (Station 5) already occurred on the original ascent, so you would have to buy a separate ticket for this leg of the journey.

*we know it sounds complicated, but hopefully that makes sense!

How often does the Gornergrat train go?

While the Gornergrat Train Timetable varies from month to month and season to season, the Gornergrat Train typically departs every 24 minutes, beginning around 8am and finishing around 8pm.

Is the Gornergrat better in Summer or Winter?

Obviously, this depends on what you want to get out of the Gornergrat. Realistically, the view from the train and at the various viewing platforms along the line is incredible during both seasons.

The Gornergrat is the easiest and one of the best ways to experience the Matterhorn in all its beauty.

  • 6 Highlights on the Gornergrat
  • Enjoy the unique panorama at 3135 m above sea level with mountains and glaciers as far as the eye can see.
  • Many hiking routes through the Valais mountains start at Gornergrat. Experience the impressive play of light and the fresh alpine wind.
  • From Gornergrat you have a perfect view of the world famous Matterhorn with the Monte Rosa glaciers.
  • A multimedia adventure world "Zooom the Matterhorn" lets you experience the Matterhorn from afar from the Gornergrat.
  • From the valley you can reach the Gornergrat very easily and quickly with the Gornergratbahn: the highest free-standing rack railroad in Europe.
  • The Gornergrat mountain bike trails should not be missed by any biking enthusiast. The rides are among the most beautiful trails in Switzerland and range from easy to very difficult.

Situated between 29 four-thousand-meter peaks, the Gornergrat offers a very special view. It lies between the Gorner Glacier and the Findel Glacier

Sights on the Gornergrat

Already the approach with the rack railroad is an experience. You drive from Zermatt through a magnificent mountain world of superlatives. Once you reach the top, the view gets even better. The four-thousand-meter peaks are all around you and you won't be able to stop being amazed.

In the summer of 2023, the highest alpine garden in Europe will be created on 5000 m² on the Gornergrat.

  • Viewing platform on Gornergrat with panoramic view

The platform is located at 3089 m above sea level and provides postcard motifs. The view of the famous Matterhorn from here is said to be one of the most beautiful in the Zermatt region. The mighty Monte Rosa massif with the Dufourspitze (4634 m above sea level) is also clearly visible

The view goes to the mighty Gorner glacier, which is a full 12 km long and joins another seven glaciers. Behind it the panorama begins (from the left) with the Monte Rosa massif, the Liskamm (4527 m a.s.l.) and the Breithorn (4164 m a.s.l.).

The other 29 four-thousand-meter peaks within reach are also unforgettable for every visitor. In summer you can often observe wild ibexes near the viewing platform.

  • Chapel of St. Bernard of Aosta

This chapel stands at 3100 meters above sea level and is dedicated to Saint Bernard. It was built in 1950 at the request of the bishop for Sunday mass. The chapel is a block building with a bell tower on the larger of two offset roofs

Inside, people like to take pictures of the simple ornaments on the wooden ceiling. The floor of the chapel is made of stone slabs. The altarpiece, made of wooden figures, shows Saint Bernard of Aosta in the center. To his left is Saint Mauritius and to his right Saint Theodul. Saint Mauritius is the patron saint of Valais. Every year visitors light several thousand commemorative candles.

  • Admission: free
  • Open: daily around the clock
  • Location: footpath between the mountain railway station and the hotel
  • Multimedia experience world "Zooom the Matterhorn

Next to the Kulm Hotel is the former valley station of the Hohtälli cable car. It has been converted into a multimedia world of experience. Here you can experience the Matterhorn up close.

Matterhorn (Foto: © Kurt Mueller, Zermatt Tourismus)

There are three zoom levels:

Zoom level 1: With Periscopes very close to the horn

You see the Matterhorn and its surrounding mountains and enjoy all the alpine beauty. With Periscopes you get close to the view and get information about it.

Zoom level 2: immersive 3D cinema

You will be transported to the four seasons on the Matterhorn. You will experience blooming spring meadows, hurricane-like autumn storms and icy snow landscapes. You also get the feeling of experiencing the Matterhorn on a balmy summer evening. The almost real experiences are made possible by light projectors from three sides

Zoom level 3: Paragliding

Here you have the choice between two virtual paragliding flights. You can experience a sporty and adventurous flight or a relaxed panoramic flight. You sit in a floating chair with 3D glasses. Both virtual flights focus on the Matterhorn and the surrounding alpine landscape

  • The Riffelsee on Gornergrat

This small mountain lake without an outlet is located at 2770 meters above sea level and is famous as a photo motif. The Matterhorn is reflected in the calm lake in a particularly impressive way. Especially in the morning or evening twilight, the lake is much quieter than during the day

The Riffelsee is located at the foot of the Riffelhorn and can be reached in just ten minutes on foot from the Rotenboden train station. Only a few meters behind the lake, in the direction of Riffelberg, you will reach another and smaller lake that is not so crowded. The Riffelsee is therefore a popular destination when you visit the Gornergrat

Arrival with mountain railroads on the Gornergrat

You can get to the Gornergrat by a rack railroad. It's not just any cable car, it's the highest outdoor cog railroad

After the Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch , the Gornergrat Railway is the second highest rack railroad in all of Europe. In only 33 min it overcomes 1481 meters of altitude and 9.34 kilometers from Zermatt station.

If a marathon or half-marathon is taking place, a spectator train runs between St. Niklaus and Zermatt as a moving grandstand. At the train station in Zermatt you will also find on these days (usually at the beginning of July) a small folk festival

  • Stations of the Gornergrat Railway

  • Train ticket Gornergratbahn

The Riffelalp Tram is a narrow-gauge railroad. It runs from the Riffelalp train station over the length of 675 meters to the Riffelalp Hotel. It runs from June to October.

  • Rote Nase (aerial tramway)
  • Gant - Hohtälli (aerial tramway)
  • Gifthittli (chairlift)
  • Triftji ski lift is open in winter.
  • Erlebniscard Valais on the Gornergrat

Activities and experiences at Gornergrat

Gornergrat is one of the most popular destinations in Switzerland. The nearby Matterhorn and the view of the huge mountain world all around attract many people here all year round

In winter, sledding and snowshoeing through the snow-covered landscape are the main activities. The Zermatt Ski Schools offer various courses for beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders. On the Riffelberg you will find a ski school for small children.

  • Climbing on the Riffelhorn

The Riffelhorn is a climber's paradise. Plaisir climbers love to come here. Climbing in the rocks has a moderate level of difficulty. The multi-pitch routes are well to very well equipped with bolts and very versatile. The Riffelhorn reaches 2918 m above sea level and is often used by alpine climbers as a training climbing mountain

The Bartgeier climbing route was set up by two mountain guides from Zermatt. It corresponds to difficulty level 4+ (UIAA) and runs along the southeast edge of the Riffelhorn

The Querdenker variant branches off before the traverse to the Bartgeier. It has difficulty level 5+ (UIAA) and runs along a very windy part

From Gornergrat you take a train station to Rotenboden and then follow the path for 15 min towards the south face routes. A bolthook is available as a marker at the entrance. Partly you have to belay the route yourself. You will need a 45 m long rope as well as wedges and friends

  • Ski school Snowli Kids Village

At the Snowli Kids Village on the Riffelberg you can have your child professionally instructed in skiing. It is not far from the Gornergrat and can also be reached via the Gornergratbahn.

  • Tobogganing on the Gornergrat

A very beautiful toboggan run with a view of the Matterhorn leads from the Rotenboden railroad station to Riffelberg. You can reach the starting point very easily with the Gornergratbahn. It usually leaves every 10 minutes. And if you would like to sled down with a SNOOC, you can reserve it in advance

  • Altitude gain: 224 hm ↓

You should definitely take sunglasses to avoid eye damage and even snow blindness

Altitudes above 3000 m above sea level can cause health problems. The air is thinner and you can expect to get a headache or feel dizzy. The pulse could also be elevated after just a few steps

In these cases, it is better to walk slowly and take more frequent breaks. Drinking plenty of fluids is also important. People with health problems should consult their doctor before visiting the Gornergrat.

  • Location and arrival to Gornergrat

You can only get to the Gornergrat with the Gornergratbahn. The rack railroad leaves from Zermatt. Since Zermatt is car-free, you have to leave your car in Täsch and take the shuttle to Zermatt . Trains and buses run to Zermatt. From Zurich you need 3.5 hours by train via Visp.

In summer, the herd of black-nosed sheep will once again be grazing on the Gornergrat. Around 125 black noses are on the move - mostly in the shade, as their fluffy fur makes it too hot for them in the sun.

Image download

Meet the Sheep - The cuddliest visitors on the Gornergrat

But no matter where they are on the mountain, as soon as the herd enters the Gornergrat area, you can visit them in the wild. You can find the woolly sheep using GPS localisation. To ensure that the black-nosed sheep are not travelling alone, a shepherd accompanies them on their adventures around the Gornergrat.

The herd is protected, guided and led through the mountain landscape with a great deal of passion and dedication. On this page you can see where the herd is currently located in summer:  Meet the Sheep - meet-the-sheep (gornergrat.ch)

The Meet the Sheep theme trail, which previously focussed on the herd of black-nosed sheep, will be renamed the Matterhorn View Trail this summer. The eleven stations no longer focus exclusively on the black-nosed sheep.

You can now find out more about the Gornergrat railway, traditions in Zermatt, the Matterhorn and much more. Walk along the cairns and scan the QR codes. Despite the renaming, the route of the trail remains unchanged.

The best restaurants in Zermatt

Z ermatt boasts outstanding mountain restaurants as well as an excellent variety of eating options in its buzzing, cosmopolitan town. Expect to find everything from traditional Swiss röstis to Asian and Peruvian cuisines.

However, Zermatt consistently ranks high on lists of the most expensive ski resorts and a strong Swiss franc doesn't help. But with a little exploration, there are eating options to suit most budgets, including kebab stands, pasta outlets and traditional, unpretentious places, as well as the swish restaurants. For better value on the mountain, head to the linked Italian slopes of Cervinia in the Aosta Valley for lunch.

For further  Zermatt  inspiration, see our guides to the resort's best  accommodation  and  après ski .

On the mountain

Just below the Theodulpass, on Plateau Rosà by the Bontadini chairlift, Bontadini is one of the most popular places to eat on the Italian side of the ski area. Upstairs is a self service restaurant offering tasty pasta dishes and cheap drinks. There’s a smarter, more pricey part downstairs, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a great wine list, and a gamey menu of Aosta Valley specialities including tagliatelle or polenta with venison.

Price: £ Contact:  00 39 335 250 312

Part of the imposing mountaintop Gornergrat hotel at 3,089m, vis-à-vis's traditional dishes are beautifully done and presented. Options include garlic soup served in a bread bowl, or rösti with veal sausage. Service is speedy and there's a vast terrace with mountain views, and ibex wandering past yards away. The self-service place in the next-door room is adequate.

Price: ££ Contact:   gornergrat-kulm.ch

A handsome old mountain hut below the Rothorn, Fluhalp has a warren of cosy little wood-panelled rooms. Soups, pastas and salads – including a great tagliatelle – come in satisfying portions at reasonable prices, and the large terrace has a view of the most perfect aspect of the Matterhorn.

Run by Vrony herself, Chez Vrony has two sittings each lunchtime (12pm and 2pm), a lovely interior full of nooks and crannies, and a big terrace. The food is eclectic and perfectly executed, and includes fish soup, mouth-watering lamb, and unusual dishes such as Bloody Mary soup. In the small hamlet of Findeln, just below the Sunnegga funicular top station, it has fantastic views of the Matterhorn.

Another one in the collection of restaurants on the south-west facing slope just below the Sunnegga funicular top station, Findlerhof is a friendly, family-run place with superb food and great views of the Matterhorn. Specialities include fish soup and fillet of lamb with herbs.

Price: £££ Contact:  findlerhof.ch

In the resort

A basement restaurant in the Hotel Alex on Bodmenstrasse. The garish stained glass mountain scenes on the walls and paisley upholstered chairs with gold frames may not be to everyone's taste, but you can't argue with the quality of the food at Hotel Alex Grill. It's rich, delicious and combines Valaisian and Alsatian cuisine – there's cheese fondue, grilled fish, braised pork cheeks plus a range of sorbet desserts.

Price: ££ Contact:   hotelalexzermatt.com

Chalet da Giuseppe

Located on Vispastrasse, Chalet da Giuseppe is an unpretentious, low-key place with high quality Italian food – risottos, pastas, meat – and a charismatic host. Opt for the early shift (from 6pm) for the best chance of getting a table. In high season, it's advisable to book around two months in advance.

This starkly modern restaurant is inside the contemporary design hotel of the same name, which is perched on a hillside and accessed through a tunnel from the upper part of the main street. The Omnia, overseen by Chef Tony Rudolph serves a seasonal à la carte menu. It's popular with locals for special occasions.

The Peruvian and Asian inspired restaurant at the hip Schweizerhof hotel (one of three restaurants in the hotel), La Muña serves beautiful dishes, such as salmon tataki or ceviche. Shared plates are the norm, often with a Japanese twist.
